| hogarth03-22-07, 10:05 PM | "Where do you find a powerful corpse?" That's the question that Ceilia asks herself. In order to increase the military might of the Red Knight, first she needs to find the raw materials. Discussing the issue with an acolyte after services one week, he suggests consulting the most senior member of the Gladius Taxidermists' Guild -- Bronoc Aliven. Since that place sounds as likely a place as any to start, she decides to investigate it one afternoon. The shop is tastefully appointed on the exterior; the interior is fashionably decorated as well, but is also decorated with various strange and unusual creatures. Two creatures that catch Ceilia's eye are a small, impish-looking creature whose flesh resembles ice and a bizarre snake-bird cross breed with two pairs of wings. There's nothing present that appears that it would make a very doughty warrior, however; the boutique is mostly decorated with smaller pieces. Bronoc is a dapper-looking man with muttonchop sideburns and a velvety voice. "How may I assist you, madame?" he asks solicitously. |
| Zevox03-23-07, 05:32 PM | Decidedly uncomfortable among all the forms of dead animals, Ceilia tries to make this quick. "I'm looking for a particular type of body. My Goddess has granted me the knowledge of how to reanimate soulless forms, and I would raise one that will make for a skilled warrior. But not a human or elf or such - those bodies always animate weaker than they were in life, and are too disconcerting to most. Do you have anything, or know of anything, of the sort?" |
| hogarth03-23-07, 10:05 PM | Bronoc thinks for a moment. "I don't believe that I would have anything here that's suitable, I'm afraid. Usually the customer provides the substance and I just arrange it in a life-like manner." He hesitates, and then continues. "There is one client that I have however. I gather he has some sort of extensive trophy room, and I've created some larger pieces for him. Maybe you could make him an offer or a trade -- I believe he's always on the lookout for new items." |
| Zevox03-24-07, 01:27 PM | Ceilia blanches at that thought. She hadn't intended to do any killing to gain this body. Still, perhaps this client would want something that was a genuine threat to people and it wouldn't be like murdering to get what she wanted. "Very well. Who is this client, and where and how might I contact him?" |
| hogarth03-24-07, 06:50 PM | The taxidermist looks through his files and brings out a waybill. In his neat penmanship he copies out the address. The address is a bit strange: The Hall of the Seven Winds Mt. Panchuko Gallithen County "I've never met him in person, but he's one of my best customers. I'm sure he wouldn't refuse a reasonable offer, of course." --------- Gallithen County is not too far away (as the crow flies) and Ceilia and Rook make the flight in a couple of hours. There is a village at the foot of Mt. Panchuko, so Ceilia stops there and inquires after the Grand Duke. The innkeeper she's speaking to gives her a curious glance. "The Hall of the Seven Winds (as it's called) is actually a series of caverns halfway up the mountain, to the side of the main trail. There's an enormous gnarled pine that grows near the entrance -- you can't miss it. All of us around here have given the "Grand Duke" a wide berth for decades; some say the place is haunted. Good luck to you if you wish to explore that godsforsaken place!" |
| Zevox03-24-07, 08:21 PM | Ceilia is slightly troubled at this news. "That is... not what I expected. But it seems the best choice I have for my goal, so I shall have to trust to the Goddess to protect me. Thank you for your time and the information. The Grandmaster defend you!" she says in parting as she heads out to mount up on Rook again and look for these caverns. |
| hogarth03-24-07, 11:20 PM | The path is quite easy to follow, and after a brief flight Ceilia espies the large pine. Flying towards it, she espies a cave mouth. By the entrance to the "Hall" there is a small imp-like creatures wreathed in wisps of cloud. It hails her in a bored-sounding voice. "Oh. A visitor. Well, I guess you'll be wanting to see the Grand Duke, will you? Well follow me -- I'll announce you." The mephitic creature leads the way into the cave without looking back to see if Ceilia is following. The large cavern within is illuminated with light streaking in via fissures in the mountain rock. Adorning the walls are stuffed figures of virtually every shape and description as well as mounted heads. In a few moments Ceilia is led into the presence of an enormous blue-skinned vaguely humanoid figure three times her height. "Kneel before Grand Duke Tsakzcuritz, Archimandrite of the Western Gale, Blessed of Yan-C-Bin, Most Puissant Stormmaster and ask your boon!" it thunders imperiously. |
| Zevox03-25-07, 10:27 AM | Ceilia stands before the figure, unfazed. She'd grown up among more pretentious nobles back in Gladius and has long since ceased to have respect for royalties and titles of social status that someone may throw around. Only military and religious ranks ever mattered to her anymore. Clasping her holy symbol, she replies "I am Ceilia Durrol, warrior-priestess of the Red Knight. I seek a body of a being that will make a strong warrior when reanimated magically, and have been told you may know where one may be found. I am willing to offer my services in a fair trade for such information - or for the body itself, should you possess such a one yourself already." |
| hogarth03-25-07, 12:35 PM | The Duke appears irked that Ceilia doesn't kneel, but he refrains from pressing the issue. "Indeed I have many trophies that would make powerful warriors. But what do you have to offer me in return?" He looks at Rook appraisingly. "This winged beast you have...it looks interesting. I don't believe I have one yet. Give it to me, and in exchange you can have one of these djinni. I've killed so many in my life, I've lost count -- I would have no problem giving up one of them." The enormous blue aristocrat gestures at a large stuffed muscular humanoid posed in an attitude of attack. Undoubtedly this would make a decent warrior in her estimation. |
| Zevox03-25-07, 12:54 PM | Ceilia doesn't even hesitate a moment. "No," is her reply, her face stony as she says it. "Rook is my friend. He has served me faithfully for some time, and I will not do any less than ensure his continued safety and comfort in return." Her expression softens as she requests, "Perhaps there is some other creature you would desire? As I said, I am a warrior-priestess of some talent, and I would not be adverse to hunting one down for you." |
| hogarth03-25-07, 02:50 PM | The Duke's brows narrow and his voice grows angry. "No. That is not acceptable. I made you a reasonable offer and you spurned it. HOW DARE YOU?!? Here's my counter-offer -- I'll kill both of you, skin you, and then I'll have two trophies for my collection." The Duke shrinks slightly (now he's only twice Ceilia's size) and reaches over to pick up a large polearm and longbow leaning against the wall. While he gathers his arms, Ceilia and Rook back up across the large cavern and prepare for the Duke's assault. Rolls are here. (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=1246) http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=Name,L,31,59;b= Name,L,4,32 Duke's init: 23 Ceilia's init: 21 |
| Zevox03-25-07, 03:19 PM | Well, if this is anything along the lines I suspect (giant/ogre), we'll be pulling ranged combat principally. So to start with, Ceilia draws and casts from her scroll of shield of faith, and Rook takes off. Get to max altitude and fly away from our foe. I'll want a couple of rounds to buff before engaging. Those buffs: Bless from scroll, divine favor from memory (draw bow this round). Then hit him with spiritual weapon and follow with mounted archery (single-moves when firing to avoid penalties please). BTW, I'm presuming that I need to save 5 of my spell levels to cast the animate dead and desecrate spells at the end here. If you think that wouldn't be needed, cast Aid instead of bless, and toss in those commands (to go prone) after the spiritual weapon to give it a better shot at wounding him. Ceilia's teeth grind at the situation. This was not how she had hoped to resolve this. Still, perhaps getting rid of this creature would be for the good of the nearby areas. "To the air, Rook!" she urges her mount as she grabs one of her scrolls and intones its prayer, surrounding herself in holy energy. |
| hogarth03-25-07, 04:50 PM | I guess you need the Animate Dead/Desecrate for this cycle. I'll work under that assumption for now. If you want more clarification, you'd need to ask Cat or the elders. Ceilia and Rook fly around and the priestess intones various blessings to the Red Knight, filling herself with divine power. She then looks around for the Duke, but she doesn't see him at first. Suddenly an arrow comes out of nowhere, followed by another as the Duke reappears. The two powerful arrows lodge in Rook's neck, very badly injuring the hippogriff. Round 1: Duke ?? Ceilia casts Shield of Faith. Rook climbs to 30 ft (maximum height). Round 2: Duke ?? Ceilia casts Bless. Rook circles around. Round 3: Duke ?? Ceilia and Rook look for the Duke; they don't see him. Ceilia casts Divine Favor. Round 4: Duke breaks his invisibility and fires two arrows at Rook (26,23=hit; ride 15=fail, damage=11,14). Ceilia: 52/52 hp, AC 23 -- alt. 30', shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22), divine favor (ends 13) Rook: 0/25 hp, AC 19/20 -- alt. 30', bless (ends 22) Duke: ?/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=Name,L,31,54;b= Name,L,4,32,5,25,13,25,31,44 Do you still wish to cast Spiritual Weapon? I assume you'll either want to land or heal Rook. |
| Zevox03-25-07, 04:56 PM | Query: After the first attack breaks the invisibility, shouldn't Ceilia be able to use mounted combat to negate the second? With +12 ride, she has a 45% chance of doing so. In either event, fly away (break LoS preferably) and heal up Rook with her wand. Get him to full (even without heal I can tell the difference between injured and uninjured on any creature), then proceed as planned. BTW, round 1 should've been shield of faith. Bless and Divine Favor were for after that. Since she didn't do anything round 3 as is, I'm assuming theres no problem there. |
| hogarth03-25-07, 05:07 PM | I rolled for mounted combat; it failed (3+12=15). I'll add the shield of faith. Note that Rook can currently only take a move action (since he's disabled). |
| Zevox03-25-07, 05:11 PM | Note that Rook can currently only take a move action (since he's disabled). True, but as soon as Ceilia heals him, thats no longer the case. If he single moves then she heals him, shouldn't he then be able to continue moving a double-move, just as though he had been doing that all along and she did the healing mid-move? Meh, either way, 100' speed plus wingover should be fine for getting out of LoS/behind cover. |
| hogarth03-25-07, 08:55 PM | Ceilia guides her wounded hippogriff away from the archer and heals it up (bit by bit). Round 4 cont'd: Ceilia and Rook retreat; Ceilia draws her wand and heals (4). (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20050208a) Ceilia: 52/52 hp, AC 25 -- alt. 30', shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22), divine favor (ends 13) Rook: 4/25 hp, AC 19/20 -- alt. 30', bless (ends 22) Duke: ?/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=Name,L,31,54;b= Name,L,31,44,41,38,39,35 Round 5: Duke moves forward and takes another shot at Rook (19=miss). | Zevox03-25-07, 09:07 PM | (You can't draw and use a wand if your mount moves more than 5': http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20050208a) Pardon me, but what?! Not only can I not find anything of that sort in there (even did a search for the number or word five and came up with nothing but ride and concentration DCs), but its in direct contradiction to the rules in the SRD, which allow you to do a move and standard action separate from your mount's. If you can reload and fire a crossbow mounted while your mount double-moves (and you can), or draw and attack with a sword while it single-moves (and you can), or cast a spell and draw a potion while your mount double-moves (and you can), you sure as hell can draw and use a wand while your mount double-moves! Sorry, but I had to say that. Haven't even looked to see if it'll matter with the fight yet, but that was just so aggravating that I just had to say something. |
| hogarth03-25-07, 09:25 PM | I exaggerated when I said you can't take a full rounds' worth of actions if you move more than 5' (for instance, you can do a ranged full attack), but did you read the bit about drawing a weapon while mounted in the RotG article? "Draw a Hidden Weapon: Your mount's movement doesn't affect your ability to draw a hidden weapon. If your mount makes a single move, you can draw the weapon either before or after your mount moves. If your mount runs or makes a double move, you draw the weapon when your mount has completed half its movement for the turn." As much as I may not agree with the RotG, it does clearly state that a move for your mount is a move for you, too: "When you and your mount move, the two of you use your mount's speed rating, adjusted for the mount's encumbrance and the terrain. Because your mount takes you along with it when it moves, a move for your mount also counts as a move for you." One round either way isn't making a difference in this case, so it's a bit moot. You can argue it in the Courtroom if you like. |

If need be, you're damn right I'll take that to the courtroom. That second quote is in direct, explicit contradiction to the rules as written! You move at its speed, but the mount uses its action to move. Likewise, you can take move actions normally. The PHB even expands that second quote to include the example of loading and firing a crossbow in the same round as your mount moves or double-moves. Near as I can tell, that part of that RotG article is flat-out wrong, plain and simple. As for drawing it at the halfway point, nothing directly contradicting the rules there, but also nothing prohibiting draw + use on wands, so its kinda moot here. |
| hogarth03-25-07, 10:33 PM | O.K. All healed up. Actions? |
| Zevox03-25-07, 10:40 PM | Fly back around and ready to cast Spiritual Weapon at him on sight. Don't get too close to the central pillars, just circle them at a nice distance. From there, start with bow shots while the weapon does its work. |
| hogarth03-26-07, 01:53 PM | Ceilia and the Duke trade arrow shots with each other, and a divine sword tries to cut down the Duke as well. The shots are in vain until the Duke manages to strike Rook again, spilling yet more hippogriff blood. Zevox: Could you give me some guidance as to when Ceilia switches from archery to healing Rook? And did you want to use your bow while double-moving with -4 to hit? Round 8: Duke moves and readies to fire on sight. Ceilia and Rook move and the Duke fires at them from hiding (spot -3 vs hide 8; attack 29=hit; mtd combat 32=negated) but Ceilia steers Rook to the side and casts Spiritual Weapon (16=miss). | Zevox03-26-07, 02:37 PM | Damn, except for ride, those are some crappy rolls... Okay, retreat to heal Rook (basically, do this whenever hes injured - sorry, but thats the only way to be sure I don't lose him, which would force melee, which would most likely be very bad). Use my second casting of shield of faith from my scroll on him before returning to ranged combat. Edit: You know what, change of plans. Something needs to change with this guy, or I'm going to get my ass handed to me by his superior archery. So, after casting SoF on Rook from that scroll, instead of drawing my bow again, draw my sword and set up to charge. Charge to sunder his bow (remember doubled damage from Spirited Charge, and hold the sword two-handed for the +4 to sunder and the 1.5xstr to damage), and have Rook attack at the end of the charge too since he can. Afterwards withdraw. Do it again if needed. Idea being to deprive him of that bow, then beat him with archery while hes helpless to resist. As for double-moving while shooting, no, please don't. Ceilia's archery is poor enough as is. |
| hogarth03-26-07, 05:15 PM | Ceilia heals her faithful mount and they move back towards the fray. They line up for a charge; Rook is hit with an arrow and Ceilia gets a mailed fist to the face, but she succeeds in slashing the Duke's bow to flinders! Zevox -- please give me your comments on this chain of events. Round 11: Duke readies to shoot on sight. Spiritual weapon attacks (19=miss). Ceilia heals again (3). Rook keeps flying. | Zevox03-26-07, 05:55 PM | Well, it looks like you forgot that the shield of faith was from a scroll, which would extend the events just a bit. But anyway... yeah, retreat and heal. If I don't, he gets another two shots before I can charge, which may screw me. Sorry, but with him attacking Rook and somehow having a good ranged attack and damage both, this is a bit difficult to do without getting myself in a very, very bad situation. |
| hogarth03-26-07, 05:59 PM | Zevox, I've edited it a bit already. The readied shot missed due to cover. |
| hogarth03-26-07, 06:29 PM | Furious at this turn of events, the muscular Duke takes a step back and grabs Rook by the throat! The two large monsters tussle furiously. Zevox: actions? Round 16: The Duke steps back and grabs Rook (touch 30; ride=15; grapple 41 vs 22; damage 8 nonlethal) and squeezes (grapple 26 vs 27=fail). Ceilia and Rook... |
| Zevox03-26-07, 11:05 PM | One quick question: does this thing actually have combat reflexes, or were the two AoOs on the charge a mistake? Gr... damn it, just when something goes right in this fight, one of the worst possible things happens! And my spells are used up if I want to use desecrate, so I can't command him off Rook or convert anything to inflict spells... crap. I suppose Rook will be trying desperately to escape, and Ceilia will hack away with a two-handed grip on her sword. If my math is right, thats +13 vs his dexterity-less AC for 1d8+7. Heres hoping either I can down him before he brings Rook down or get away and do the ranged deal. If he knocks Rook out though, equip my shield, use its heartening ability, and hack away. |
| hogarth03-27-07, 09:34 AM | Ceilia strikes with her magic sword before the Duke squeezes Rook into submission and draws his glaive. Ceilia swings again and misses, but she manages to sneak in a hit as the large creature withdraws, hoping to use his large reach to his advantage. He misses with his pole arm, but Ceilia is faced with a whirling wall of steel between her and her opponent. Zevox: The Duke has Combat Reflexes. Round 16 cont'd: Ceilia strikes with her longsword (29=hit; damage 8) casts Command - Flee (30!=saved). Rook tries to escape (13 vs 31=fail). Ceilia: 44/52 hp, AC 22 (no shield) -- alt. 30', shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22) Rook: 13/25 hp (8 nonlethal), AC 21/22 -- alt. 30', bless (ends 22), shield of faith (ends 34) Duke: ?/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) Round 17: Duke squeezes Rook (25 vs 14=hit; 11 nonlethal) and Rook falls unconscious (soft fall succeeds). Duke draws his glaive. Ceilia equips her shield, fills herself with vigor and hacks away again (16=miss). Ceilia: 44+5/52 hp, AC 25 -- alt. 30', shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22), vigor (ends 57) Rook: 13/25 hp (19 nonlethal), AC 21/22 -- alt. 30', bless (ends 22), shield of faith (ends 34) Duke: ?/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) Round 18: The Duke steps 15' back (AoO 27=hit; damage 8) and attacks with his glaive from a distance (22=miss). Ceilia... | Zevox03-27-07, 09:53 AM | Looking to trade AoOs eh? *double checks Glaive* Nope, not a trip weapon. Good. *glances at rolls* Yeesh, thats a huge attack bonus. Can't count too terribly much on my AC vs that. Okay then, charge him. And do a lot of praying. |
| hogarth03-27-07, 10:20 AM | Ceilia charges past the Duke's glaive. It brutally slashes her before her sword can find its mark. The Duke retreats again (suffering a stab in the back for his pains) and gives Ceilia an evil grin. "You hurt me, you common wench. The sheer effrontery! No matter -- your hide will make a lovely rug for me." Zevox: It's becoming obvious to me that I picked a creature that is too tough (although the run of lousy rolls didn't help either). It was just poor judgment on my part, not malice. Sorry about that. By the way, I believe if you succeed in your miniquest, you still get the djinni corpse (the questgoal) -- you should be able to cast desecrate/animate dead at a later date, I would think. Round 18 cont'd: Ceilia bravely charges the Duke. She gets hit by one attack of opportunity (25=hit; damage 21-3=18). She connects with her sword (30=hit; damage 12). Ceilia: 31/52 hp, AC 25 -- shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22) Rook: 13/25 hp (19 nonlethal), AC 21/22 -- bless (ends 22), shield of faith (ends 34) Duke: ?-20/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) Round 19: The Duke moves 20' back past Ceilia to stand over Rook's body again (AoO 27=hit; damage 6). Then he attacks (34=hit; damage 18-3=15). Ceilia... Ceilia: 16/52 hp, AC 25 -- shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22) Rook: 13/25 hp (19 nonlethal), AC 21/22 -- alt. 30', bless (ends 22), shield of faith (ends 34) Duke: ?-26/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) |
| Zevox03-27-07, 03:30 PM | Um, he was at 15' before, right? Since a large creature with a reach weapon threatens 15-20' with it, that should mean the second AoO is with his gauntlet. That'll reduce the damage (thank God!). But, by that about the corpse do you mean that I don't need to save my SLs for the animating/desecrating? Damn, I wish I'd known that at any number of points through this fight... command might have let me get him off Rook and Ceilia back into the air, which would mean that, without his bow, its just a matter of time before hes done for. Say, if thats the case, I don't suppose we could rewind to do that? Instead of Ceilia attacks and Rook tries to escape, Ceilia casts Command and tells our Duke to Flee, hopefully getting her out of this predicament before it even occurs? If not, at least I know I can do that now. So drop the shield and defensively cast Sanctuary. Thats about all I can see saving me (unless he were to fail a Blindness save, but given the traits hes displayed so far I'm betting he has a much higher fortitude save than will save). If I'm totally misinterpreting that comment though, I guess I charge again. Nothing else I could do without my spells. |
| hogarth03-27-07, 03:40 PM | Oh...my mistake. I meant to say that he moved 20' (and thus there would be 15' of empty space between you). I'll remove the second AoO (he can't take one hand off of his glaive if it's not his turn, IMO). As far as the spell thing goes, the problem is that the rules are mute on when you actually cast Desecrate/Animate Dead. You could probably make a good argument either way. I'll ask in the Courtroom thread and see what people think. By the way, why didn't you do an EL 3 miniquest instead?!? |
| Zevox03-27-07, 03:52 PM | By the way, why didn't you do an EL 3 miniquest instead?!? Money. Ceilia spent nearly all of her cash on her armor, pearl of power, and the reagents for the animate/desecrate spells, so she needs money to craft equipment for the skeleton. I have a 900 gp bow to buy and about 1k gp (after crafting) worth of weapons and armor to make for it. Can't get that kind of dough off an EL 3 quest. |
| hogarth03-27-07, 04:21 PM | Added in a Command spell in round 16 -- the Duke saved (with a natural 20, no less). I have a previous engagement this evening, so I'll probably have to finish this fight late tonight. Sorry for the delay. |
| Zevox03-27-07, 07:03 PM | :uh-huh: +10 will save?! Jesus Christ, does this thing have a weakness? Well, if its got a will save like that, might as well try Blindness before the Sanctuary. BTW, 5' step for casting if its an option. Just realized I didn't mention that alongside the defensive casting request. |
| hogarth03-27-07, 10:25 PM | Ceilia tries to call on the Red Knight to blind the Duke, but her prayer falls on deaf ears. The creature swings his pole arm fruitlessly at her twice. Then she tries one more prayer to protect her from harm. The goddess smiles on her for once, and the Duke is left fuming and unable to attack. Round 19 cont'd: Ceilia takes a 5' step back, removes her shield and casts Blindness (26=saved). Ceilia: 16/52 hp, AC 22 (no shield) -- shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22) Rook: 13/25 hp (19 nonlethal), AC 21/22 -- alt. 30', bless (ends 22), shield of faith (ends 34) Duke: ?-26/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) Round 20: The Duke takes a 5' step forward and full attacks (21,21=two misses) and misses. Ceilia takes a 5' step back and casts Sanctuary (14=fail). Ceilia: 16/52 hp, AC 22 (no shield) -- shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22), sanctuary (ends 25) Rook: 13/25 hp (19 nonlethal), AC 21/22 -- alt. 30', bless (ends 22), shield of faith (ends 34) Duke: ?-26/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) Round 21: The Duke takes a 5' step forward and does nothing. Ceilia... |
| Zevox03-27-07, 10:32 PM | 5 rounds of no attacks? Sweet :D ! First, 5' step back to my shield, pick the shield back up, and sheath my sword. Then draw my wand and heal until the round before Sanctuary would drop. The round before that would happen, drop the wand, move right up to him while drawing my sword, and cast Command ordering him to drop his weapon. If that succeeds, I'll get a full round before he can pick it back up to strike. If not, well, I'm no worse off then before, and I'm somewhat healed. Either way, its melee from there (charges as before when he pulls back - and remember what Telin posted about him not getting more than 1 AoO on the same creature even with Combat Reflexes). *fingers crossed* |
| hogarth03-27-07, 11:13 PM | Ceilia heals herself with her wand while the Duke is reduced to impotent fury. He lashes out at the unconscious hippogriff in his rage and chops it into two pieces with a single blow. Ceilia orders him to drop his weapon, but he disobeys the command. The priestess sneaks in below the reach of his pole arm, so the two combatants duel at close range -- one with an iron gauntlet, and the other with a sword. Ultimately, luck is on the side of the Duke and he pummels Ceilia into oblivion. Right...I keep forgetting about that "only 1 AoO per movement" rule. Round 21 cont'd: Ceilia picks up her shield and sheathes her sword. Ceilia: 16/52 hp, AC 22 (no shield) -- shield of faith (ends 51), bless (ends 22), sanctuary (ends 25) Rook: 13/25 hp (19 nonlethal), AC 21/22 -- bless (ends 22), shield of faith (ends 34) Duke: ?-26/? hp, AC ? -- buff 1 (ends ??) Round 22: The Duke (in his fury) does a coup de grace on the unconscious Rook (minimum damage=39), chopping the hippogriff in two. Ceilia draws her wand and heals (9). | Zevox03-27-07, 11:41 PM | Advanced... ugh, that explains things. I so hate the rules for advancing creatures as far as the CoCo goes. Higher hp than anyone but a super-con fighter or barbarian would have at this level, high saves all around, high attack and damage with all his weapons, high grapple, and to top it all off SLAs that let him go invisible and change size - this guy really didn't have any weaknesses to speak of in a 1-on-1 with characters at this level. Oh well. Sucks, but I'm stuck with it. Can't even try again until next level... I suddenly don't like that rule all that much... Oh well. Thanks for the run, and for putting up with my negativity. Especially on the mounted combat thing - that one just got me fired up, sorry if I came off as angry at you ('twas the article I was angry at, not you). |
| hogarth03-28-07, 12:18 AM | My original idea was a Huge air elemental until I looked at the stats for that thing (16 HD! 5/- DR!). One of my pet peeves about monster fights is that flying/levitating characters are adversely affected by the "no auto-win" rule. Basically, my choice of monster was sort of restricted to: 1) creatures fast enough to catch up with a hippogriff (basically dragons or air elementals), or 2) creatures who can use archery/ranged spells. I don't think the advanced jann was any worse than a lillend (fewer hit dice, but has spells) or a half-celestial djinni (fewer hit dice, but better stats and SLAs). It certainly pales in comparison to a phasm or a huge elemental (or a dragon, of course). Next time I'll be more careful to err on the side of caution. Sorry. I agree that the "1 miniquest per level" rule is rough. I always intended for Reginald Molehusband to have dragon Diplomacy allies, but now I know that passing the required miniquest is tougher than I first realized. |
| Zevox03-28-07, 12:40 AM | Actually, the "no auto-wins" thing is just for monster fights. Nothing against it for MQs. But anyway, you know you didn't need to use monsters either. PC types who were good archers could've done fine. Or another mountee on a Hippogriff or Pegasus. Or a caster. Hell, you could've done a meleer if you wanted to give me an auto-win. Also, just so you know, Ceilia tends to use her mount not to stay away from foes, but to close. If this thing weren't a super-strength large creature I'd have done just that. Shes not an archer, shes a warrior-cleric. Spells to support her, but melee is her way of winning whenever its viable. The bow is just for when its not. As for the monster comparisons, I'll definitely say a Lilenid is far easier. Lower saves for everything but reflex, almost half the hp, lower attacks, those spells are just Bardic... yeah, thats a lot easier of an opponent from where I'm sitting. Half-Celestial Djinni is closer, mainly because of the at-will invis, but I still think I'd rather have that. Still lower attacks, damage, hp, etc than that size-boosted advanced Janni. Dragons and Elementals, yeah, those're worse. But then, Dragons are always bad for their CR, and Elementals always are once they hit large size IMO. |
