This is a miniquest for Jur, the Mad Magician. If you are not Tellish_of_Ket (hereafter referred to as "ToK" or "head peon number 4") or TelinArtho (hereafter referred to as "Questor Murderer Extraordinaire" or just "Master" for short), do not post here under penalty of something exceptionally nasty. Luckily, you can still post in the appropriate places (Fights of the Week thread, Tavern thread) or even send either or both of us PMs about the quest. Please send money to its appropriate place...

Oh, yeah - Jur is miniquesting to destroy a very young red dragon and to bring its remains back for proper animation.

Questlog: Blaze of Glory (EL10) - Failure
Week 1: Jur falls to the might of three Young Silver Dragons.

Resources Used: (none - its a frozen quest...)

This quest is not an in-cycle quest.

CLASS FEATURES
The cloistered cleric has all the standard cleric class features, except as noted below.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Simple weapons and light armor.

Lore (Ex): Thanks to long hours of study, a cloistered cleric has a wide range of stray knowledge. This ability is identical to the bard's bardic knowledge class feature, using the cloistered cleric's class level in place of the bard level.

Deity, Domains, and Domain Spells:
In addition to any domains selected from his deity's list, a cloistered cleric automatically gains the Knowledge domain as a bonus domain (even if the Knowledge domain is not normally available to clerics of that deity). He gains the Knowledge domain granted power and may select his bonus domain spell from the Knowledge domain or from one of his two regular domains.

Spellcasting: Add the following spells to the cloistered cleric's class spell list:
0st - message;
1st - erase, identify, unseen servant;
2nd - fox's cunning;
3rd - illusory script, secret page, tongues (reduced from 4th level);
4th - detect scrying;
6th - analyze dweomer;
7th - sequester;
9th - vision.

I swear sir - I saw it right over there. The perfect corpse, just like you had asked.

Jovan, in his usually boisterous personality, was overly excited about the find. Jur had been looking for a suitable corpse to animate for some time now.

Jur did not hesitate to head towards where Jovan indicated, but stopped for a moment with a quizzical look on his face. Jovan did not wait for the question.

Yes, yes, I know it looks like an active volcano - but I've been there - and its entirely safe. Trust me.

Dead dragon - you wanted one - I found one. Now come on or do you need me to hold your hand?

Jovan paused for a moment, his eyes on the sky, perceiving something that Jur's untrained eye simply could not.

Hmm, well that complicates things a little...

It looks like some other dragons have come to claim the body first...

How ironic... It looks like a trio of dragons have come to claim the body of your red dragon. Can you get them to leave it alone?

Silver dragons of medium size.

Terrain will be equivalent to the standard arena. Send your tactics or we do it round by round - good luck!

I have heal +20, as per CoCo heal skill rules, can i tell just HOW tough they look (hp-wise)? Also as i saw them fly by and land somewhere was i able to spot any obvious visual magical effects (spellcraft +18). Safe to assume they don't begin pre-buffed?

Terrain will be equivalent to the standard arena.
Any chance of making it on the plains? I was initially doing my tactics for that. Though i don't mind re-thinking out a strategy for the std arena, it's just they can full attack me first round even if we start at opposite ends. Doesn't really give us a fighting chance. :)

I inform Jovan of my assumptions based on my skill checks.

Jur,
Jovan, i'm afraid we will have quite a fight on our hands if they do not wish to relinquish the body of the red.

Jur takes a big <gulp> realizing that trying to talk their way out of this would be preferential, but obviously impossible. Jur takes a moment to ponder any other information that he garnered from his brief glance of the dragons.

Get that bow of yours ready. They will probably be coming in hard and fast. Here my good friend. You are a far more qualified horseman than I. It is my pleasure to loan you Araja as well for your aid. He is a fine steed with exceptional speed and turning.

Round by round is fine with me.

Jur casts spectral hand from wand, while Jovan casts mirror image and moves up a bit. If he can see them coming, he'll shout out a warning at me to get ready. He only does a single move, so no need for a conc check.

Plains map is fine - I was figuring you might want the arena to give some semblance of cover in some places, but if you want the plains - they're yours to have. I'll be back in a bit and set everything up.

[Initiative order: Jovan, Jur, Dragon 3, Dragon 2, Dragon 1]
All dragons start in area 2, Jur and Jovan start in area 4 (just because that's where you plotted your movement in the post above. Approximate encounter distance is 600+ ft.

Jovan casts mirror image upon himself [5 images] and rides out.
Jur casts Spectral Hand from the wand. [1hp]

[That wand of yours is ilegal - get it approved and pay the credits for it please.]

Each of the dragons read a scroll from in hand. Jur and Jovan cannot hear the spell formula to have a chance to identify what spell it is. After reading the scrolls they drop them and go aloft, spreading out and reaching a 20ft altitude. While flying, they each draw wands.

http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=plains;a=Name,M,8,6;b=N ame,L,7,8,15,16;c=Name,M,89,92,69,84;d=N ame,M,89,89,72,74;e=Name,M,92,89,83,69

Jur (8,6) 46/47, Spectral hand (1hp, ends 31)
Jovan (15,16) 45/45, Mirror Image (5 images, ends 61), mounted
Araja (15,16) 28/28

Dragon 1 (69,84,4) xx/xx, buff 1
Dragon 2 (72,74,4) xx/xx, buff 1
Dragon 3 (83,69,4) xx/xx, buff 1

[Your custom warhorse's stats are not reflecting the elite array you gave it. It should have 28 hp (3d8+15), +3 init, 16 ac (-1 sz, +3 dex, +4 nat; touch 12, FF 13), +10 grapple, 2 Hooves +5 melee (1d4+4), Bite +0 melee (1d3+2). Also, I believe when applying the elite array to animals, the WIS is unchanged - so that should remain at 12. Saves +8/+6/+2.]

Jovan stands his ground and concentrates upon his innate talents. Suddenly he goes very blurry and his hard to follow. His images that he's also created also begin to blurr. Jur is proud of his new companion. He only regrets that he will die for the cause. Sad...but lets hope it doesn't come down to that.

Jur sees the plains as a perfect breeding ground for insects. Jur's eyes begin to roll in the back of his head focusing on the locusts that must be in the field feeding. Jur senses that they are there for him to call if he wishes, but Jur, despite his madness, is a little smarter than that. With his superior knowledge of the Arcane Arts, he knows that these dragons are only first level casters. He knows that those wands will most likely contain magic missiles, to which he know he has no real defense. Also, being only first level casters, those scrolls were more than likely protection scrolls, giving them immunity to his summoned insect plague.

Jur's vitality is not the greatest, so his next move would naturally be to defend himself against those wands. He focuses upon the divine power of the mad god himself and makes himself almost immune to any magic those first level casters could bring to bear.

Jovan casts blur (which also affects his images) and knocks an arrow in his bow.
Jovan casts Spell Resistance (SR 22)

SR 22, should be VERY good against those wands. :)

NO ONE expects the Spanish Inquisition!

Just making sure, but did Jovan move this round. You don't mention it - but I want to be sure.

The dragons each use their wands in turn. To Jur's great surprise, the dragons multiply! Now, instead of 3 dragons in the sky, a total of 15 litter the air! They take their time as they fly closer.

[I just realized I never answered your questions about Heal and Spellcraft from before. I am not letting them have any prebuffs, so no need for that. As to heal - your knowledge (arcana) is not high enough to give an exact HP total to work from (though I'm sure that's not difficult to figure out...).

Jovan stands ready to act as soon as any of the dragons approach too closely.

Jur curses himself for an unlucky guess and wishes had had done something else. He prepares himself for the coming onslaught and draws a scroll and casts it.

Whilst Jur and Jovan continue to prepare, the oncoming fleet of dragons approaches evermore. Despite the great distance still, Jur is able to hear the mutter of magical words on the wind as each dragon casts another protective spell - this time shield.

Jovan knows the time to act is now. He moves 60' due East, putting him at 105' from Mr. Orange. He lets out a terrifying scream and from his pointed finger tip a lightning bolt rushes outwards, striking Mr. Orange with electrical fury.

Jur stays where he is, knowing he's about 185' from Mr. Pink, well within range of his Spectral Hands reach. He manifests his own madness from within and closes his eyes just before sending out the hand to strike with unerring precision.

Jovan casts lighting bolt at the orange dot.
Jur has true strike up, negating the need to roll 50/50. He casts touch of madness and strikes out at the pink dot. Will Save DC: 24

Jovan rides out due east and a streak of lightning crashes through the set of 4 dragons there. They all seem to dodge the worst of it though, which elicits a growl of a challenge from Jovan.

Jur concentrates on his next spell and moves the spectral hand into position to strike at another dragon. In his mind's eye he aims just right and touches the dragon on the shoulder. The dragon's defenses fight it off at first, but slowly the madness encompasses it. The dragon falls from the sky and lands hard on the ground.

The two remaining dragons fly close enough to Jovan to breathe, descending coldness all over him and then moving on. Araja dies outright from frost, sending Jovan to the ground.

[dragon 2 took 5 pts of falling dmg. Also Jovan has DR 10/cold iron, evil, which the small falling dmg didn't break. He has 3 hp more.]

Jovan enters a state of self-preservation. He turns to Jur, to see what he should do. Silly thing to do he thinks quietly in the back of his mind, "This master is completely mad. Powerful...but mad.". Jur simply gives Jovan a knowing nod. Jovan knows what Jur is asking for and...

Jovan knows the time for sacrifice is now. He simply heals himself as best he can with his cure critical wounds ability and stands up defensively, relying on his blurred-images to absorb the incoming melee attacks.

Jur knows he can't take the time to strike through each of their images individually, and conjures up another vision of pure judgement. A vision of unfailing striking ability. "Such a shame they must be sacrificed."

Jovan stands and brushes himself off - the frost crystals melting off his body as snow on a fire. Calling upon his innate ability, his resilience bounces back - his body restored mostly from the frost.

Jur draws another scroll and casts from it.

To Jovan's surprise the dragons turn course from him - bolting directly towards Jur. The two dragons who had already breathed slam their claws into Jur, rending his skin horribly and leaving him heavily wounded.

The other dragon flies towards Jovan and releases yet another cone of ice over his body. This one he avoids the worst of, and his natural resistances take most of the brunt.

[Did the dragons not just breathe on him last round? Not trying to meta-game, but the best one of the dragons rolled was 2...so wouldn't he be able to breath this upcoming round instead? Just curious. The order would then be charge, breath, as opposed to breath, full attack. It makes a bit of difference...just curious.]

Jur knows, now that he has the attention of one of the dragons, he only has one chance to survice. If it were to breath on him, or full out attack him, he could not survive.

He prays to the mad gods above and takes a 5' back. He launches his madness into the silver dragon hoping to paralyze it's mind with his own darkness within.

Jovan, knowing the pressure has at least been lifted from him momentarily knows his master is in quite a predicament.[His actions will sort of depend on my response AND if the dragon Jur is fighting fails/makes it's will save. So if we can resolve that first, i'll do Jovan's action immediately following.]

Jur, 5' back, touch with spectral hand/true strike.

The dragon that you hit with touch of madness moved and breathed on Jovan; the other two dove-charged at Jur.

Hope that clears it up - see you tomorrow.

Jur knows he will die next round, he just hopes Jovan can distract them suffiently. Jovan moves closer 30' and unleashes a lightning bolt catching both wyrms in it's path. Hopefully this will cause a bit of distraction.

Jur steps back 5' and reachs out with his spectral hand to attack the least injured dragon, hoping to send it in a paralyzing grasp of mindness.

[Lemme know what you decide after you read your PM's. The events may change, but if they don't this is what i'll be doing.]

As above, but now that i know they are both on me, i'm dead. I just gotta hope for a miracle.
Jur steps back and readies to touch the least injured dragon.
Jovan moves 30' closer and southward to catch both dragons at an angle without affecting Jur.
Jur sees which is least injured (heal skill), and unleashes his spectral hand upon that one.

THESE ARE NOT YET MY ACTIONS!
[Hehe...just waiting for you to edit the sequence of events before i finalize what i wish to do. Who knows, maybe one of them stays with the Bralani, and only one goes for me. Take care bud...see you when you edit.]

Well, as I said in PM, the only change is that the dazed dragon is still dazed. Post above has been edited - I'll update the map if I get the chance - but use the positions in the summary to be sure.

Ok...since Jovan is no longer injured he will do as previous in his tactics. Everything is the same. He will move 30' angled downward to catch both dragons in his lightning bolt. Jur will step back 5' and touch the least injured dragon.

All I can say is... ouch. Natural one on the touch to hit on the ready action...

Jovan remaneuvers and fires off another bolt of lightning. The injured dragon seems to dodge the worst of it, but the other takes the bolt full wing and barely is able to stay aloft because of it.

Jur steps away from the two dragons and readies to touch them upon one getting close - as he knows they soon will. The first comes close and he tries to touch it, aided by magical guidance, but by some fluke chance - he misses.

The two dragons then tear his body fourteen ways until Tuesday...

Rough luck there on the roll, but that happens on occasion. Even had you succeeded though, a full attack from the remaining dragon would have easily finished you off with that not-so-impressive AC of yours...

NP. At least if i downed one, Jovan could have beaten the last one, and pluck away the other two while they remained dazed.

I was just re-reading and i sent you a PM. It seems like i missed my turn. You had me attack a round after doing my 5' step...when i could do something that round.

I'll still take the auto-miss in that round, cuz i would attempt to touch them anyway, but in the round i take the 5' step back, i'ld like to cast confusion affecting them both.
TelinArtho

03-05-07, 04:18 PM
Huh? You stepped back and readied to cast Touch of Madness. Immediately after that, the dragon stepped forward and the ready action triggered - a miss.

Where's the missed action?

Jur will step back 5' and touch the least injured dragon.

I guess it shouldn't have been a readied action - but you certainly can't change what you did now.
Tellish_of_Ket

03-05-07, 04:21 PM
I readied to attack after the lightning bolt...not the following round as they approached me. I have spectral hand up, so i would have been able to do it that very same round.

Like i said, i don't mind missing in the following round, so long as i get an action the round i step back in. I'll be 100% honest, my first tactics was to confusion if they came to me, but after the edit and replies, i lost sight of that, and if they are both on me, it's really my ONLY chance at life.

Nope, not asking to change that part. I will still auto-miss in that round. My only request is to cast the confusion like i was originally going to do, but somehow somewhere, it got lost...in both my head and written.

Just looking for that 9th inning rally, or the hail marry.

It wouldn't really be fair to allow you to switch your actions now that you know the touch of madness would miss - especially when you had cast True Strike on the round previous - so to me that indicates what you wanted to do.

I'm sorry man - but there's just nothing I can do about that.

Yes, but there weren't surrounding me at the time i cast it. I was fully prepared to sacrifice it for confusion. I was measuring constantly to look for that one opportunity to cast it.
