To be affected, an ally must be able to hear the bard sing. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the bard sing and for 5 rounds thereafter. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 morale bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 8th level, and every six bard levels thereafter, this bonus increases by 1 (+2 at 8th, +3 at 14th, and +4 at 20th). Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. Inspire Competence (Su): A bard of 3rd level or higher with 6 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use his music or poetics to help an ally succeed at a task. The ally must be within 30 feet and able to see and hear the bard. The bard must also be able to see the ally. The ally gets a +2 competence bonus on skill checks with a particular skill as long as he or she continues to hear the bard’s music. Certain uses of this ability are infeasible. The effect lasts as long as the bard concentrates, up to a maximum of 2 minutes. A bard can’t inspire competence in himself. Inspire competence is a mind-affecting ability. | TelinArtho03-29-07, 12:42 PM | The battlesong duet rose early the day of the trial. Tessero was to petition himself for better training, but in order to do so - he had to prove himself by successfully completing a test. He was given little information about the trial before him, but luckily he had a helpful friend to give him some help. Cupid met him out on the plains of Naestitya - a small book in her hands. The high grass bent slightly in the breeze, and there was little to obstruct view from their vantage point all the way to the Dragor Mounds nearby. Its a good thing you waited. I just did a little checking before the sunrise and it seems that your teacher is interested in testing you very physically... I'm not sure I should tell you what lies at the other end of the field - but its too late to turn back now... With a shrug, Cupid opens the book in hand and shows the picture on the page to Tessero. Yeah... a celestial dire lion... This should be fun... @McJarvis - make sure you fill out the class features in your sheet... it would've been nice to just look up your bardic knowledge rather than calculate it (Bard 5 + 2 Int +2 Synergy = 9 vs DC0+7). Also - once you show me Cupid's color for text - I will change the above to correct for it. Good luck! |
| McJarvis03-29-07, 09:41 PM | 1) Ok..I'll add it to my laundry list of things to update on Cupid's sheet. Admittedly her sheet is not well put together at all...there were issues when she was first made with rules that made me apathetic to correcting everything =\. 2) Cupid's a girl...did you refer to her as a he? 3) Consider Cupid's text to be Purple 4) Thanks for MQing! Should be fun :D |
| TelinArtho03-30-07, 11:45 AM | Fixed above Tessero takes a quick look over the book handed to him, but drops it before reading much - the sound of a great cat rushing across the fields attracts his attention! [Initiative: Lion, Tessero, Cupid] I've started with Tessero mounted on Equalizer and I've placed you further into the plains map in order to give you some play with regard to retreating if you wanted. The lion has run to its current location. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=plains;a=Name,L,35,55;b =Name,M,35,56;c=Name,L,89,8,65,24 |
| TheMagister03-30-07, 12:12 PM | Okay, so how are you going to handle this, Telin? Ambush-style? If it ambushes us, this's gonna be short, because there's nothing we can do to mitigate the pounce (no ready actions outside of combat, no time to buff). If we can start with LOS, on the plains, in seperate starting boxes, we have a chance. I need to know so that I can figure up tactics. |
| TelinArtho03-30-07, 12:17 PM | You can start in opposite boxes if you like - I was just giving you a little retreat room to work with on the map. Actually - better yet - let's give you two full prebuff rounds at this position on the map - and the third round is its current location. It started 600ft back from its current position. If you want - you can fire on it in that time, or even move back if you like. Since the online mapper doesn't do wrap arounds well though - I won't be able to handle that too easily... |
| TheMagister03-30-07, 12:37 PM | Deal. Round 0: Tessero: Begin unmounted, holding a powerstone of Vigor and a powerstone of Expansion. Equalizer is behind Tessero. Cupid: Begin holding a scroll of Heroism and her whip. R1: Tessero: Expansion, drop stone, draw glaive. Cupid: Heroism, drop scroll. R2: Tessero: Vigor, drop stone. Cupid: ready action to cast Grease on the space just in front of Lion when Lion approaches to 20'. Combat: Tessero (lion prone): delay till after Cupid. Cupid (lion prone): has already acted via ready action. Tessero (lion prone): approach to within 15' of lion, full powerattack w/glaive + blow focus for psionic weapon. (Lion rises and acts): forgo AoO for rising, in favor of taking an AoO for movement. AoO for movement should be a touch attack to improved trip (+? circumstance bonus b/c lion standing on Grease!). Followup attack should be a repeat of initial attack. Tessero (lion not prone): approach to 20' and touch attack to trip (+? circumstance bonus b/c lion standing on grease!). Followup attack = full powerattack w/glaive + blow focus for psionic weapon. Cupid (lion not prone): cast Rage on Tessero and Equalizer. (Lion rises and acts): same as above. Tessero (the home stretch): keep lion prone. Drop guisarme to avoid being counter-tripped, draw new guisarme => flail to stay threatening. Grip of Iron for grapples. Cupid (the home stretch): aid another with whip for Tessero's offensive actions (mostly for trip checks). Heal Tessero with CLW when necessary. Re-cast Grease if Lion exits grease area. That oughta do it. "Entertaining indeed, milady." Tessero looks critically at the charging lion's dagger-sized claws and toothy maw. "Since I doubt he will be swayed by your charms, we will have to depend on my more...mundane skills. By my lady's leave?" Tessero steps in front of his beautiful charge and concentrates, growing not so much taller as more massive in girth and muscle. He draws his glaive as he goes; the polished steel makes a low hum as it cuts through the warm air that travels the plains. "Anything you care to add, m'Lady?" |
| TelinArtho03-30-07, 05:50 PM | Not sure enough if he is prepared, Tessero grips the guisarme in hand tightly, anticipating the lion's charge. Just as it comes into range, Cupid casts a spell to make the plains slick with grease. The dextrous lion spots the effect just in time to jump over it. A prepared Tessero swings at it in mid-air - hoping to knock it flat to the ground, but his blow is wide and never hits the immense cat. Landing squarely on Tessero - it rended him in several places. Greatly injured, Tessero backpedaled from the beast, taking another paw to his leg and leaving him near death. As a last ditch, he swung his guisarme under the lion's legs and knocked it to the ground just as Cupid laid out another layer of grease under its legs. Equalizer approached the thing cautiously and stamped and bit at it in defense of Tessero. Unerringly, the beast stood - and on a defensive swing from Tessero ripped the guisarme from his hands and stood over him, breathing hot mist smelling of freshly caught deer on its breath. Undeterred, Tessero whipped his flail from his side in a single motion - dropping the terrible creature before it could lend him future harm. It dropped to the ground in a tremendous heap, growling once more as its death rattle. Tessero's vision was blind with sweat and blood. He barely felt Cupid's kind touch to his side staunching one of the massive cuts on his side. Okay - there's a lot of mistakes in the roller - so you'll just have to trust me that you won this one. Here's a quick breakdown of the rounds. I don't guarantee it is error-free, but it is good enough for this: Round 1 Lion runs Tessero manifests Expansion from powerstone Cupid casts Heroism Round 2 Lion runs Tessero manifests Vigor from powerstone Cupid readies to cast Grease on approach. Round 3 Lion runs into position to charge. Tessero delays until after Cupid. Cupid readies Tessero waits. Round 4 Lion charges Tessero, triggering ready action to cast Grease. Lion makes the reflex save (21 vs DC13) and instinctively jumps over the grease. (27 vs DC10) Doing so however, it leaves Tessero's threatened area, drawing an AoO. Tessero tries to trip the lion in mid-air [9!+2 (automiss)] The lion pounces on Tessero [33! (31-confirmed), 20,21,13,22 vs AC20-2, 4 hits; Dmg 2d6+14=19, 1d6+7=10, 1d8+3=6, 1d6+3=6; 41 total] Tessero moves away to 15ft [AoO 22 vs AC20-2, hit; Dmg 1d6+7=9] and tries to trip it [27+2 vs touch AC11-2, hit; Opposed 29 vs 18, success; Followup 17+2-4 vs AC15-2, hit; Dmg 2d6+6-5+8+2d6=7+8+7=22] Round 5 Cupid casts Rage on Tessero (can't effect Equalizer because it is one target per 3 levels) Cupid casts Grease under the lion [Reflex 9! (autofail)] The lion stands and tries to move closer [Balance 12 vs DC10], drawing an AoO from Tessero to trip [18 vs AC11-2, hit; Opposed 26+1 (rage) vs 27-2 (grease), success; Followup (full powerattack) 18 vs AC15-4, hit; Dmg 2d6+6+8+1-5=23-5=18-1=17] Tessero attacks with full powerattack [16 vs AC15-4, hit; Dmg 2d6+6+8+1-5=16-1=15] (forgot to take away rage when he didn't cast it...) Equalizer moves to defend [21,22,13 vs AC15-4, hit; Dmg 1d4+3-5=2,1; 1d3+1=0; 3 total] Round 6 Cupid draws a wand of CLW and uses it on Tessero [1d8+1=2] The lion stands [AoO from Equalizer 5! (automiss)] and tries to move closer [Balance 19 vs DC10], drawing an AoO from Tessero to trip [10 vs AC11-2, hit; Opposed 16 vs 29, fail; Reverse 21 vs 14 - guisarme dropped] It attacks Tessero [29 vs AC20-2, hit; Dmg 1d6+7=9] -- It can't attack - it already took 2 move actions. Tessero draws his flail and attacks [20 vs AC15, hit; Dmg 2d6+6=8-5=3] Equalizer attacks [19,14,15 vs AC15, 2 hits; Dmg 1d4+3-5=1, 1d3+1-5=0] |
| TheMagister03-30-07, 06:05 PM | Whoa. MAN you're hard on your players, Telin. I mean really. For example: The DM should adjust saving throws by circumstance. For example, a creature charging down an incline that is suddenly greased has little chance to avoid the effect, but its ability to exit the area of effect is almost assured (whether it wants to or not). So the charging Lion gets to not fall down, and it gets to jump out of the AoE without being slowed down (which would disrupt its charge)?! Even on a successful Balance check, you're still limited to 1/2 speed, you know. And the lion gets no Dex, either (no ranks in balance), hence the request to powerattack all the time (to help with DR). Anyhow, I'm highly appreciative of the run, and don't require any edits or anything. I'm smart enough to take my money and run. Thanks again for the quick battle! TM "I nearly failed you, my Lady. I couldn't have forgiven myself if the beast had won past and harmed you..." Tessero groans as the magic knits his torn flesh; the rents in his plate armor will prove more difficult to repair... |
| TelinArtho03-30-07, 06:11 PM | Where the heck is that quote from? I guess I was just treating the situation as I would picture it. If a lion is pouncing - wouldn't it lend itself to actually jumping a little bit? In other words - it seems reasonable to me that it is in effect prepared to jump at that last moment anyway. In another aspect, if someone is able to dodge the effect of something and they have a decently high jump check - why not allow them to jump over the effect - especially when their momentum is in that direction in the first place? Maybe I was too lenient with it - but I'll reexamine that when I am not tossing someone's life away. Nice job by the way. |

Maybe I was too lenient with it - but I'll reexamine that when I am not tossing someone's life away. Nice job by the way. The quote is from the PHB (should be in the SRD, too). As to the pouncing/jumping thing: pounce requires a charge. If you're slowed at all, you can't charge. Making a balance check with anything less than a -5 penalty means that you slowed down in order to keep your feet (see the Accelerated Movement section of the Balance skill). When you're charging, you have to make TWO checks. It's damn hard to keep your feet when Balancing. It's nearly impossible (by RAW) to not only keep your feet while charging at full speed, but to also set your feet enough to JUMP while doing it. One of these days, I want you to find a freshly waxed hardwood floor and put on some really dry socks. Run from outside the hardwood floor area to inside the hardwood floor area and then try to jump even a little bit. You know what? You've got kids to support. Nevermind -- don't try it. But if you did try it, you'd see what I mean. And grease is magically slippery. A heightened grease spell is a fighter's worst nightmare. :) |
| TelinArtho03-30-07, 06:27 PM | Well - its not in the SRD... Regardless, how exactly would you rather I adjudicate it though? I can't just blanket say that it auto-fails the check. It made the check with flying colors (Reflex 21 vs DC13) - so any sort of situational modifier isn't going to make it fail (unless I give it a circumstance modifier that effectively auto-fails the check). Perhaps part of the difference in opinion is the location of the grease. You stated you wanted it just in front of the lion. If you had cast it underneath - that would be a reflex to check it and it would probably try (try and fail) to continue at full speed with a balance check. By putting it ahead of its path - it has the momentary chance to avoid the effect. The other way for me to have handled it was to have it stop dead in front of the grease and adjust its path by being more cautious. |
| McJarvis03-30-07, 11:49 PM | Don't charges have to be in a straight line? Jumping is a naturally arc'd activity. (high point of the arc is in the center of the jump & 1/4 as high as the jump is long, if memory serves...) edit-> not sure if you round up or down for jumps in relation to 5ft spaces. maybe it wouldn't have left the "tunnel" of attack... and as one additional note-> if the lion is making a reflex save then he's already in the area of the grease-> so he either jumped before entering or had a reflex save and then accrued the balancing problems TM is describing. He couldn't have tried to make a save & then make the jump check "just before" getting to the grease square. |
| TheMagister03-31-07, 06:58 AM | Nah, jumps can be a part of a charge; I've never had a problem with that (used it myself with Sdentch a few times). It's not important anymore. I think Telin and I both learned some things. For one, I learned to specify to cast Grease on a charging large creature's front two spaces and leave the extra two spaces in between myself and it so that it can't even remotely be expected to have avoided the effect. :) So are you guys gonna post any role-play, McJ or Telin? I'm still trying to find Tessero's "voice." That's hard to do when you're talking to yourself... |
| McJarvis03-31-07, 08:30 AM | As always, I was merely pointing those things out for clarifying my own knowledge :) I really think if the charge & jump was long enough you wouldn't be able to combine the two...(but wouldn't that be a 5*4=20ft jump? probably a longer jump than most people ever do) |
