| Etiquette_Gnome02-23-07, 05:35 PM | This is a general miniquest for Hogarth's character, only myself and he may post here. The basics are that Hogarth is sent to do some minor negotiations for a wizard in exchange for services between him and his guild, the Living Tree. This is out of cycle. His character is as follows... Treetall lived in a small community of fey and druids deep in a forest far to the north. A few months ago, he was expelled by his comrades for reasons he refuses to speak of. Forced to leave with only the clothes on his back and a shabby-looking sack, he and his wolf-friend wandered for many weeks, begging for their bread. Finally his aimless journey culminated at the fabled city of Gladius. With nothing left to lose and little hope for the future, he has resigned himself to life in the gladiatorial ring. Perhaps this will help him forget the past... Wumpus was the alpha male of a wolf-pack up north, renowned for his ferocity and keen ears. He found a kindred spirit in Treetall and has joined him on his travels. Currently Wumpus has returned to the forest and Treetall has befriended an enormous bat named Frobozz. | Etiquette_Gnome02-23-07, 05:40 PM | Treetall's guild has spoken, there is a wizard who wishes to provide the organization with reagents that would aid the druids in their maintenance of their forest. The wizard is busy, and informed the guild that a representative was to come to him under direction of his familiar to retrieve, examine, and comment upon the materials; as well as deliver payment. The exact time and place of this was left vague in order to reduce the possibility of bandits. As Treetall waits, a raven swoops into the home, bearing a necklace with an arcane sigil upon its breast. Tied to a leg is a small scroll. It watches intently at the small gnome, a gleam of intelligence in its eyes. |
| hogarth02-24-07, 09:35 AM | Treetall moves towards the bird slowly, not startling it, and unties the scroll from its leg. Speaking in the secret tongue of forest creatures, he says to the creature "I suspect you are no ordinary bird, Blackwing, but rather someone's familiar spirit. Very well, we are expecting you." He unrolls the scroll and reads the message. |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-24-07, 04:21 PM | Upon the small parchment is written in Common, and could actually be described as having an accent with the spelling mistakes, not that you're able to put your finger on the primary language. The message reads: "Bring your payment, follow the raven, and we'll discuss how much I shall provide." After reading it, the raven turns to face out the window, raising its shadowy wings in anticipation. With a **** of its head, it looks at Treetall to see his reaction. |
| hogarth02-24-07, 05:42 PM | Treetall shrugs. "Lead on, Blackwing" he says. The raven takes off, and Treetall follows with his bat companion following close behind. Give Frobozz the "Defend" command and follow the raven. |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-24-07, 08:55 PM | It takes almost an hour before Treetall finally sees an end to his following, a large clearing with a ruined guard tower in the center. Bits of rubble are gathered at the bottom, partially covering the entrance such that only a gnome could squeeze through to enter. The sun is setting, which even with the open air of the clearing it is small enough for it to be hard to see. Aside from the cluttered walkway around the base of tower, the clearing lives up to its name. Swiftly, the raven flies ahead and perches in an arrow slot. It looks back for but a moment before lightly hopping down and out of view. A voice carries out of the tower, "Sorry for the decor, but this place is rarely watched, and enemies I have! Go ahead and come on in, eyes of newt and basilisk cartilidge doth make my nose upturned. Not much going on here. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=890273) Let's assume it's just a bag of platinum they sent you with or something. |
| hogarth02-24-07, 09:22 PM | "Sir," Treetall shouted up respectfully, "Here is the payment that I have been entrusted to deliver. I know little of the dealings of wizards and arcanists, but if the Tree places its faith in you, I warrant that it must serve the cause of the land" They entered the wizard's tower, Treetall holding the sack of coins patiently. |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-25-07, 10:27 PM | As you crawl over the rubble, you wait for your eyes to adjust. Beams of the final traces of sunlight break through holes in the roof and arrow slots, giving the walls the color of fire with the ever dimming light. On the opposite side of the 20' wide room is what seems to be a robed figure, but the shadows cover so much you're having trouble telling if its even alive. Bits of the stairs crumble, but seem functional. About a fifth of the shelves around the place seem to still be up, bits of equipment cracked with age having been too much weight for the other four-fifths. Fortunately the rusted fullplate is still supported over the entrance, otherwise it would likely block what's left of the opening. There is what seems to be a chest on the right-hand side of the room, covered by a tarp. A voice breaks from the direction of the figure, "Thank you, friend gnome. That chest to your right holds our agreed goods, though if I knew how much the guild entrusted to you, I would consider providing you with more." Something sounds strange about the voice speaking with you, as if smaller than the size of the figure would indicate, and the statement doesn't sit right with you. However, you can't quite put your finger on it. Sense Motive 6 vs. Bluff 4 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=891438) OOC: My apologies, but as the entrance happens to only be large enough for a gnome to squeeze through (full-round action), I doubt your animal companion can enter. The room is under dim illumination (concealment for all parties) except for three squares opposite the entrance which are under total darkness, and this is assuming your low-light vision is present. |
| hogarth02-25-07, 11:21 PM | Treetall brushes the dust off of himself and eyes the figure warily. "Not that I doubt you sir, but do you have any proof of who you say you are? Can you come closer where I can see you? Where is your familiar? Treetall draws his bag of tricks. |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-26-07, 12:37 AM | You hear (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=891556) nothing for a moment, then you notice the woodwork above you creaks. Suddenly, the armor and some of the inner stonework falls down upon you. Fortunately, you manage to lurch forward and have it only clip your back, though now the entrance is blocked by close to 100 pounds of rubble. Coming from above you, your ears pinpointing (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=891568) the source (which is empty), "You might want to be careful, gnome. This tower has seen better days, and moving too much might cause accidents. As a word of warning to you, illusionists don't like to reveal themselves, as it tends to ruin the surprise. OOC: Strangely, that display armor needs to fall 30' before it even does a single d6 of damage. |
| hogarth02-26-07, 08:45 AM | Treetall squints into the darkness, then murmurs a few words, igniting a magical flame. "Er...I see. You just want me to look in this box, do you?" Treetall's confusion at the ways of wizards deepens. Mistrustful, Treetall murmurs again and a small monkey is conjured from the extraplanar Beastlands. "Friend, can you open that box for me?" Treetall asks the simian using forest-language. Treetall casts Produce Flame to create some light, then sacrifice Entangle to cast Summon Nature's Ally I to summon a monkey. Then he asks the monkey to remove the tarp and open the chest. |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-26-07, 12:13 PM | You hear nothing at first, as the monkey steps over to the tarp and begins to lift the material, when you notice that the light from your spell is showing the figure on the other side of the room. It is nothing more than a rickety coat rack with rags placed over it to give the illusion of width and only near total darkness could one mistake it for a person. For the first time, you hear the soft flapping of wings behind you (Roll (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892048) - Listen 31 vs. Move Silently 23). With a tear, as scales and crimson red flesh burn into visibility, a stinger appears (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892057) in your side (inflicts 4 damage (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892061)). Your body twitches and spasms (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892063) around the wound (1 Dex damage, -1 AC/range/Reflex). You see the assailant clearly now, its crimson red features made all the more menacing in the light of your hand's flame. It stands almost as tall as you, made even more intimidating as it hovers right over your head with its bat-like wings, but it's limbs make it seem frail. The face looking into you is twisted in a shape of hate and sadistic glee at the sight of your minor twitchings, rows of razor teeth glinting off your flame's light. "Just hand over the money, and I won't fill you with more 'reagents', alright little gnome?" OOC: Your opponent is adjacent to you along the vertical axis, right above you. The monkey is about 15' away, and your flame is keeping the place under bright illumination. |
| hogarth02-26-07, 12:26 PM | Treetall reaches into his Bag of Tricks and summons forth a creature, ordering it in forest-language to attack the flying creature. With his other hand, he draws forth a potion that may protect him from such an evil-looking creature. At the same time, he tells the tiny monkey to grab the little fiend. Ouch. Summon a creature with bag of tricks and draw a potion of Prot from Evil. Order bag creature to attack and order monkey to grapple. |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-26-07, 12:51 PM | The ball of fur immediately expands in size, unfurling and twisting with an almost exponential rate, slowing and stopping once the Black Bear (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892084) rears up and swats at the imp (misses). It swipes & bites (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892089) at the air once more, unable to land a blow on the swift assailant. The monkey screeches at the ensuing melee, running over and hopping around the ground and almost tripping over Treetall, unable to reach the flying creature. With a flap of its wings, its stinger flies down and strikes (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892101) (deals 1 damage (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892103)) the gnome. It backflips upwards to get out of reach of the flailing bear, cackling (5' step upwards). Treetall: 28/33 HP, AC 14 (-1 Dex), Secondary Poison (9 rounds) Flapping Foe: AC 20, Untouched OOC: I hope you don't mind what I'm doing here, but I wanted to provide the most challenging CR 2 monster I could think of and not have it be an arena battle. Gotta make you work for that XP, eh? ;) |
| hogarth02-26-07, 01:08 PM | Treetall uses the respite given by the fiend's flight upwards to drink his potion. Then he draws a scroll from his pocket and watches to see what the creature does next. The choice of monster is fine by me. Treetall drinks the potion of Protection from Evil and draws his scroll (in case he needs to cast Faerie Fire). |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-26-07, 01:40 PM | You gulp down the elixir, its magics already Fluttering back and forth, almost hypnotically (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892158) (add another +2 to that result, which still fails), "You should just leave behind that money and leave it behind, peacefully, because that's all I want. Besides, I'm sure your guild doesn't want their little gnome to risk such over 'filthy' money." OOC: Man, that's some seriously bad rolling going on here. The suggestion won't take effect until the Protection wears off though, and I'll consider it harmful and automatically break if the imp attacks after you drop the money. |
| hogarth02-26-07, 01:44 PM | Treetall begins summoning a dire bat; hopefully this creature will be able to destroy the fiend. Yikes! Not my lucky day... Sacrifice Summon Swarm to summon a dire bat. |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-26-07, 02:55 PM | Grimacing at the lack of cooperation, the creature angles and dives downward to strike, relying on its speed and agility to dodge the incoming bear's attack (monkey is adjacent, druid's unarmed and thus not threatening, bear misses (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892320)). Swiftly, it jabs (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892323) another stinger into the druid. Fortunately, it doesn't have time to properly pump its venom into the gnome as it tries to dodge the the grasping bear, though the tearing flesh jerks around the gnome slightly (Concentration (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892326) successful, 4 damage dealt). The bear shoves the monkey out of the way and wails upon its commanded foe, only the second claw connectiong (3 damage (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=892328)) Dire Druid: 24/33 HP, AC 16, poison (7 rounds), suggestion (9 rounds) Flapping Fiend: AC 18, 10/13 HP |
| hogarth02-26-07, 03:00 PM | Doesn't Protection from Evil prevent an extraplanar creature from attacking Treetall? Maybe I misread the description. Wincing from the pain, Treetall tries to burn the creature by throwing flames at it while the dire bat joins the fray. |
| Etiquette_Gnome02-27-07, 12:23 AM | With a step, the flame in Treetall's hand flares up and engulfs (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=893527) his opponent (critical confirms (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=893529) for a total of 14 fire damage, post resistance). The creature screams and crumbles to the ground. With a whimper and barely a whisper from its scorched lungs, "I am not the last." Before it even has a chance to finish collapsing, the bear and dire bat tear at its body viciously, rending it limb-from-limb. Treetall: 24/33 HP Crispy: -2/13 HP OOC: Nope, the anti-touching part of Protection from Evil only applies to summoned creatures, of any alignment. The part that pertains to evil creatures is the +2 AC/saves. As for the fight itself, I hope I gave you a challenge as well as I could with a CR 2 monster. |
| hogarth02-27-07, 07:06 AM | Whew! Having my animal companion taken away made things tougher than I anticipated. Treetall sags with fatigue. He gathers up his equipment, then turns into an eagle in order to find a path of escape from this trap. He has no desire to meet any more fiends this day. Hopefully the creature's dying words were merely a vain boast, but somehow he doubts it... |
