If Faelto is facing an opponent who can be affected by sleep - that will be her main method. If the opponent is not affected by sleep (ie elf), then she will cast entangle on her opponent and summon animals with SNAI and II spontaneously.

Faelto has a good pack of pearls of power to use and recover spells to reuse.

If forced, Faelto will enter melee with Sauria and use Sauria for cover when possible. Any spell that can be shared - will be shared.

A panting...heavy in his ear. And then pain, ripping pain across his legs. He falls backwards next to a large stone, and as he rolls over the last thing he sees before his eyes are removed is the slash of a blade towards him.

Faelto wakes up with a start in her bed, the pounding starting to recede all ready. It's as though the forest is trying to send her a message, that someone, or something, is trying to pervert it's living will towards evil.

A knock sounds on the door to her inn room, pleasant, for all that it's the early pre-dawn hours.

"Mistress Faelto, are you awake?" a voice wavers through the door.
TelinArtho

06-15-06, 03:20 PM
Calming herself swiftly, Faelto brushes the sleep from her eyes.

Yes - what is it? What disturbs the morning dew today?
Myrridin

06-15-06, 03:41 PM
"I apologize for the early morning interruption, but we received word recently that you were back in town.

One of our members went missing a few nights ago, in the forest, and we fear for what happened to him. If you are truely back, we would welcome your investigation in the matter." he pauses, and draws breath, "We are prepared to fully reinstate you into The Living Tree when you return, if you would indeed like that?"

He's nervously clutching a piece of parchment as he talks.
TelinArtho

06-15-06, 03:57 PM
I would think that recovering a lost soul is far more important than reinstating my membership. Regardless - I shall see what I can do. That there seems to be of import - are you going to show it to me or wring every last drop of water from it?

Faelto's wry smile and sense of humour pours out despite the early morning.

Show me the way young sir - let's get our feet moving instead of just our tongues.

On the way out of the inn, Faelto calls for Sauria, who comes to her side briskly.

Yeah I was sleeping too...
Myrridin

06-16-06, 09:12 AM
The man startles a bit, appearing to have forgotten that the paper is even in his hands, "Yes, well, this is a map of the area of the forest that Tavar usually frequented, we thought that it might help you track him down, and return him to us."

He pales a bit, at the suggestion that he accompany you to find Tavar, "Ah, I...er...we, were under the impression that your personal resources were more than enough...that you wouldn't need me to come with you?" he stammers out.
TelinArtho

06-16-06, 10:53 AM
Yes, yes - no matter - you can go home if you like. Let's have a look at this and see what we can glean from it.

Faelto smiles at the nervousness of the errand-boy. Looking over the map, she does her best to make sense of it.

I'm assuming it is a location that she would at least recognize on how to get to it. If that assumption is right - she'll bid the boy his leave and head off. Along the way there - she will be paying attention for anything in terms of animal/monster signs - tracks, broken tree limbs, etc, hoping to gain information along the way.
Myrridin

06-16-06, 11:20 AM
Faelto knows the general region pretty well, and while it's not a specific spot that she's been to, it's close enough to areas that she knows that she feels confident that she can locate the isolated spot.

Faelto sets off, a little glad to be out of the city, and into the open air. Once she gets within what she estimates is about an hour of the location of the missing druid, she begins to search for signs of a struggle in earnest.

Her search (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=479190) yields a few tracks...they appear to be made by a large wolf, certainly larger than any normal wolf would be. There are faded footprints that follow behind the wolf tracks, as well as a little cloth that was snagged in a branch. The tracks appear to be about a day old.

Please make all rolls under Balance, in Invisible Castle. Thanks.
TelinArtho

06-16-06, 11:45 AM
Faelto pats Sauria whilst they continue on. Looks like we might have some trouble here old friend. Keep your wits about you and let me know if you smell anything.

She straps on the buckler for a little added protection, but keeps her hands free in case she needs some spells cast.
Myrridin

06-16-06, 03:19 PM
Faelto follows/leads through the woods, and about two or three hours later sees the woods start to clear up slightly. This all starts to feel eerily familar, like the last couple flash she had from her dream earlier this morning.

Faelto notices (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=479389) that the bird and animal noises that were accompanying her in the forest have died off in the last few minutes. It's not too hard to feel why...the clearing ahead doesn't feel "right".
TelinArtho

06-16-06, 04:02 PM
Sauria chortles a little. Yeah - I don't like it either good friend, but if we're going to find this Tavar fellow - we must keep looking...

Faelto stops at the edge of the clearing to get a good look and assess it before crossing. How wide open is the clearing? Notable obstacles? Spot 10 and Listen 24 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=479434)
Myrridin

06-16-06, 04:53 PM
The clearing is about 40' in diameter, and in the center is the harshly carved rock that Faelot remembers from her dream. There is obviously a large splotch of *something* on the ground at the base of it. There also looks like what is possibly the upper torso of a humanoid.

There is some holy symbol carved onto the rock, but she doesn't recognize (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=479469) it from her studies.

There aren't any notable obstructions in the clearing, the grass appears to be about ankle height across it. The animal noises are still gone.
TelinArtho

06-16-06, 04:58 PM
Seems I just said this in my other quest... "This room SCREAMS trap... the unsuspecting adventurers walk right in..."

Well there's nothing that we can do from here - careful now.

Faelto urges Sauria forward slowly up to the edge of the altar in the center. As she approaches, she keeps her eyes peeled for any movement around the edge of the clearing as well as from the "torso"-like form on the rock.
Myrridin

06-19-06, 09:41 AM
I think you're just paranoid...or rather, you know how you'd run this.

Faelto walks in to the clearing, and approachs the remains of the body. It does look like it was an older human male, who's been gnawed on at places. There is a gaping hole in his chest, where it looks like something pulled his heart out. She notices (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482651) a small scrap of paper that is sticking out of the remains of his pocket. It's very bloodstained, and partially torn, but she can make out some of it.

Xaris is......presence comes.....Jade Father books...

"Did you find what you came for?" a voice calls across the clearing at Faelto.
TelinArtho

06-19-06, 11:00 AM
Faelto looks up and after the voice, scanning the edge of the clearing for its source.

Perhaps, but it certainly is not what I wanted to find. Who are you?
Myrridin

06-19-06, 11:27 AM
A middle aged woman steps out more fully into the clearing, and peers at you, "My name is Sharissa, and I believe that you were looking for what happened to...that."

She's wearing a flowing dark gray and black robe over some sort of armor, at this distance you can't tell what it is. A scythe is strapped across her back, and there's that holy symbol you couldn't identify on the front of her robes.

"You're going to try and return, and to the druids that I've sacrificed their friend to my god, aren't you?"
TelinArtho

06-19-06, 11:31 AM
Not at all. I'm going to bind your feet to the ground and feed you to the land that you desecrate...

Faelto takes the opportunity to start casting a spell - praying to Ehlonna to wrap vines around her foes' legs.

Take the opportunity and cast entangle - centered behind her so that I'm on the edge of the entangle. She's about 20ft away right?
Myrridin

06-19-06, 11:50 AM
She's about 30' away actually, almost across the clearing. Also, go ahead and roll initiative. Under Balance on Invisible Castly.

Init:
Lady - 1+1=2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482738)
Faelto -

So yeah, you're going first looks like.

Fealto calls on the power of Ehlonna, and the vines twist and warp around the dark lady. Somehow, despite her age, she nimbly avoids (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482740) the grasp of the vines. She moves from the center of the vines, reaching their edge, and continues moving to the other side of the clearing.
TelinArtho

06-19-06, 12:13 PM
Initiative (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482765) 11

How did she move out of the entangle? Is she really that fast? The reason I ask is even if she makes her save - she can only move at half speed through the entangle area. If her move is regularly 30ft - then she would be right at the edge of the entangle - but still not out of it yet (and therefore getting another save in before she fully gets out). If she's faster than that - I guess I'm just a little surprised... Also - how far is she from me when she finishes moving? Assuming she is still within 30ft, here's my action:

Faelto calls upon some of her arcane power, and draws some of her opponent's strength (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482768) right out of her.

Ranged touch 12. If that hits (PLEASE!)... -5 Str
Myrridin

06-19-06, 01:24 PM
I missed that it takes a full round action for her to move 30'. She's still in the edge of the entangled area. And unless you move a little forward, she's still 35' from you. I'm trying to get the map up, sorry about that.

Faelto shoots a bolt of dark energy at the lady, and just manages to hit her in the arm, enveloping her body briefly in a dark nimbus, and then retreating, drawing much of her strength with it.

She is unable (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482801) to escape the entangling vines a second time, and is stuck at the edge of their grasp.

Round 3 starts with you 30' from her location.
TelinArtho

06-19-06, 01:30 PM
Faelto watches with pleasure as the woman is held fast in the vines.

Never underestimate the power of nature's grasp.

Faelto draws her crossbow and loads it and casts a spell using the power of fire from nature. A small ball of fire emerges in her palm. Sauria moves back slightly as well, just to give them more room. I just want to be out of range of any short range spells this person might have, assuming she's level 5 (so 35ft - let's make it 50ft to be nice).

[EDIT] Can I change that to casting Produce flame and drawing my crossbow, rather than drawing and loading the crossbow?
Myrridin

06-19-06, 02:27 PM
Sure, you draw the crossbow, and cast the spell.

Flame swirls into being on Faelto's palm as she again calls upon the power of nature. She looks up from the fire and see the woman free (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482880) herself from the entangling vines.

She's now outside the grasp of the vines, and starting at you with a lot of hatred in her eyes.

"Xaris will punish you...and torment your soul for your inpertinence!"

Round 4 starts with her quite angry, and about 45' away from you. Any farther and you're back in the woods, giving concealment for both of you.
TelinArtho

06-19-06, 02:37 PM
Just a small point, but she didn't need to make a Reflex save to get out once she is entangled - but rather a Str check or Escape Artist check. Since Escape Artist is restricted by ACP and her strength reduced from the Ray of Enfeeblement - I'm hoping that she is actually still entangled.

Regardless, my action is to throw a flame at her.

Xaris eh? Never heard of him. Is he supposed to be somebody important?

As a finish to her sentence, Faelto hurls a ball of flame (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482929) at her opponent - striking her squarely and singeing her greatly. She then loads her crossbow before summoning another ball of flame to her hand.

19 on the touch, 7 for damage; 2 more throws left.
Myrridin

06-19-06, 02:52 PM
I thought it was a reflex save to get out, or the other two. Regardless, with her armor on, and the strength penatly, she's stuck fast.

The fire strikes her chest, buring partly through the robe, and heating up the chain mail that drapes her body. She cries out in pain, and then flings her hand Faelto, chanting a word of darkness. She is unable (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482957) to keep her concentration due to the vines and roots snaking around her body.

End of Round 4

Faelto - 22/22, Produce Flame 2 throws left
Dark Cleric - -7/??, entangled [Round 31], Enfeebled -5 str
TelinArtho

06-19-06, 03:01 PM
Also - don't forget to factor in the -4 dex for the entangled condition if she's trying to use Escape Artist as well...

Anyway - if you need to speed this up, assuming she doesn't succeed in any spells, Faelto will finish off her produce flame and then start firing crossbow bolts. If you don't need to speed it up, of course, I will be happy to continue rolling...

Faelto laughs at her opponent's failure. Wow - that was Impressive. Remind me to bow to Xaris's might later on... when he actually shows up. Here's something to think about in the mean time...

Another ball of flame streaks across, but misses (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=482980) horribly. Faelto glares at the spot where the flame struck - some 5 ft away from where she aimed...

Not a word from the peanut gallery...

Auto-miss on the throw, 1 throw left
Myrridin

06-19-06, 03:55 PM
She glares at Faelto, and then snarls another word of darkness. This time she maintains (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=483099) her concentration throughout the casting of the spell.

"May Xaris steal your sight!" she cries as the spell slams into Faelto.

The last thing she sees as darkness covers her eyes is the evilly grinning cleric of Xaris. (Fort save: 2+3=5 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=483109))

"My god is coming for you...save your breath for his whim."

End of Round 5.

Faelto - 22/22, Produce Flame 2 throws left, Blinded
Dark Cleric - -7/??, entangled [Round 31], Enfeebled -5 str
TelinArtho

06-19-06, 04:17 PM
Faelto curses her luck. However, unable to do much about her situation, she merely hopes that her senses will guide her. With her opponent still entangled, she throws more flame at her, and from the sounds of her opponent's pain (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=483138) she guesses her aim was true.

17 to hit, 71% vs 51% on concealment, 1d6+3dmg = 8.

This could go really bad for Faelto if her opponent breaks out of the entangled area...
Myrridin

06-19-06, 04:29 PM
Faelto hears the cry of rage and pain as the fire burns into her skin again.

"I will break out of this, and I will come for you. Xaris will have your soul!" she pauses, and doesn't resume chanting this time.

She drinks a potion, Faelto can't see it, but I just wanted to note it so that you know I'm keeping track of her HP correctly.

End of Round 6

Faelto - 22/22, Produce Flame 2 throws left, Blinded
Dark Cleric - -3/??, entangled [Round 31], Enfeebled -5 str [Round 32]
TelinArtho

06-19-06, 04:46 PM
just a correction on the status you have listed - produce flame has ended since I have now thrown three flames.

Well, in a few hours, when you've finally figured out how to untangle yourself from that mess - let me know, so I can tell the morgue to come pick you up. Wouldn't want your corrupted body to spoil the soil after all...

Faelto fires off her crossbow, still hoping her opponent hasn't moved and then reloads. She doesn't hear (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=483181) any cry of pain, so she is a little concerned her opponent has moved, but decides it is more likely she just missed.

Regardless of the AC, I miss because of concealment.
Myrridin

06-20-06, 09:33 AM
Faelto hears the woman began to chant another spell. This chanting is taking longer than her previous spell to complete.

(Spellcraft: 18+11=29 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484398))

She knows that the woman is attempting to summon a monster, more than likely in an attempt to actually hurt Faelto.

End of Round 7:

Faelto - 22/22, Blinded
Dark Cleric - -3/??, entangled [Round 31], Enfeebled -5 str [Round 32], Casting a spell

Faelto is not too happy about hearing the summoning, but unable to prevent it directly, she hopes that a well-placed crossbow bolt will do the trick. Unfortunately, she hears it embed (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484413) itself in a nearby tree.

Can I know what level of summon monster this is?

I'm at a severe disadvantage here - and if it is SM III, I might just have to call the miniquest off. Blind without a way to remove it with limited spells to work with, while my opponent can use his entire array is just a nasty combination. Not your fault - but blindness can do that to some characters.

If it is SMIII, Faelto will swear to take this meddler down soon and withdraw.

Sure, you rolled high enough to get that type of information. You know that it's Summon Monster II.

Faelto knows that the Summon spell is not as powerful as the Blindness that was cast at her.

The woman holds on to (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484420) her concentration, despite the grappling vines, and with a slight "pop" of displaced air a large centipeed pops into being. It scurries across the ground and attempts to bite Faelto. It fails (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484422) to latch on to the woman, and inject its poison into her.

End of Round 8:

Faelto - 22/22, Blinded
Dark Cleric - -3/??, entangled [Round 31], Enfeebled -5 str [Round 32]
Summoned Centipeed - 13/13
Sauria - 32/32

Faelto pulls out her scimitar after tossing her crossbow into her right hand. She swings (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484433) it towards where she thinks her adversary is, but fails to connect for some reason.

Sauria rears up, and paws with both hooves at the cetipeed. Unforatunely both of them miss (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484460) by a pretty wide margin. The centipeed responds by trying to bite Faelto again.

In this comedy of errors however, it certainly can't hit (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484462) her.

The woman curses at her summon's ineptitude, and tries to cast another spell. She successfully (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484464) concetrates again, despite the vines. Faelto knows (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484466) that the spell will call into being a weapon from her diety.

A black mace appears in the air next to Faelto, and attempts to brain her. It too misses (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=484467) badly.

End of Rnd 9:

Faelto - 22/22, Blinded
Dark Cleric - -3/??, entangled [Round 31], Enfeebled -5 str [Round 32], Spiritual Weapon [Rnd 14]
Summoned Centipeed - 13/13 [Rnd 13]
Sauria - 32/32

Sauria can't attack while I am mounted - just so you know.

Okay - time to withdraw. Sauria will have to lead the way. I assume I'll be able to get out of sight pretty quickly, and then just make sure the summons can't tackle me along the way.

Faelto whispers to Sauria that it is time to withdraw from the fight. She's easily able to avoid the centipeed, and it can't keep up with her.

Now you only have to withdraw for 5 rounds, and then you can come back and the cleric's about helpless.

We're actually at somewhat of an impasse here. She's stuck for about 20 more rounds, and can't do much more. She doesn't have enough spells for that. You can attempt to kill her with crossbow bolts, but she'll be taking the full defense option here.

Not sure what you'd like to do, but I'm willing to work with you on it. I suppose you could ride back, dismount, send Sauria to attack the cleric. Your call really.

Sorry about the Blindness, it's a staple of the cleric's of Xaris. Raskos had fits with it too.

Honestly, this is one of those situations that Faelto will simply withdraw from. She accepts that the cleric and her are at an impasse, but that without risking her life or Sauria's in a significant way - no further progress can be made.

Unfortunately, I'm just going to have to accept defeat on this miniquest. I can continue to throw flames at her in order to help - but then I severely handicap myself for future fights.

Honestly, if I had gone with my original plan and followed the ray of enfeeblement with a SNAII - I would've been fine most likely. However, since I did the Produce Flame, I could no longer cast a SNAII, and would have to settle for SNAI - but I couldn't do enough damage with something there and those animals are that much easier to take out. And this is also assuming the cleric didn't have access to some sort of protection from alignment spell to work with.

This was Faelto's first week back and unfortunately, I was able to identify some big flaws with her. Now I have to wait 2 more fights before I can resolve them, and at least 6 weeks before I can MQ again.

Anyway - I'll take the defeat. I have used Entangle, Produce Flame and Ray of Enfeeblement off of my memorized spells. I will use two of my 1st level pearls to recover Entangle and Produce Flame.

I also used 2 crossbow bolts which I assume will be unrecoverable since I fled the scene.

No problem. Just go ahead and mark on your sheet what items/spells you used, and we'll move on.

Good luck in the future with Faelto.

Make sure you update the questlog - as Pitlords seems to feel the miniquest is late...
