This is a mini-quest for the team, Wiener Wadlbeisser, to enable one of its members, Kamul (mucki), to fulfil the requirement for entry to the Warmind prestige class.

Miscellaneous Information



Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A barbarian is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, light armor, medium armor, and shields (except tower shields).

Fast Movement (Ex): A barbarian’s land speed is faster than the norm for his race by +10 feet. This benefit applies only when he is wearing no armor, light armor, or medium armor and not carrying a heavy load. Apply this bonus before modifying the barbarian’s speed because of any load carried or armor worn.

Rage (Ex): A barbarian can fly into a rage a certain number of times per day. In a rage, a barbarian temporarily gains a +4 bonus to Strength, a +4 bonus to Constitution, and a +2 morale bonus on Will saves, but he takes a -2 penalty to Armor Class. The increase in Constitution increases the barbarian’s hit points by 2 points per level, but these hit points go away at the end of the rage when his Constitution score drops back to normal. (These extra hit points are not lost first the way temporary hit points are.) While raging, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for Balance, Escape Artist, Intimidate, and Ride), the Concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor can he cast spells or activate magic items that require a command word, a spell trigger (such as a wand), or spell completion (such as a scroll) to function. He can use any feat he has except Combat Expertise, item creation feats, and metamagic feats. A fit of rage lasts for a number of rounds equal to 3 + the character’s (newly improved) Constitution modifier. A barbarian may prematurely end his rage. At the end of the rage, the barbarian loses the rage modifiers and restrictions and becomes fatigued (-2 penalty to Strength, -2 penalty to Dexterity, can’t charge or run) for the duration of the current encounter (unless he is a 17th-level barbarian, at which point this limitation no longer applies; see below).

A barbarian can fly into a rage only once per encounter. At 1st level he can use his rage ability once per day. At 4th level and every four levels thereafter, he can use it one additional time per day (to a maximum of six times per day at 20th level). Entering a rage takes no time itself, but a barbarian can do it only during his action, not in response to someone else’s action.

Power Points/Day: A psychic warrior’s ability to manifest powers is limited by the power points he has available. His base daily allotment of power points is given on Table: The Psychic Warrior. In addition, he receives bonus power points per day if he has a high Wisdom score (see Table: Ability Modifiers and Bonus Power Points). His race may also provide bonus power points per day, as may certain feats and items. A 1st-level psychic warrior gains no power points for his class level, but he gains bonus power points (if he is entitled to any), and can manifest the single power he knows with those power points.

Powers Known: A psychic warrior begins play knowing one psychic warrior power of your choice. Each time he achieves a new level, he unlocks the knowledge of a new power. Choose the powers known from the psychic warrior power list. (Exception: The feats Expanded Knowledge and Epic Expanded Knowledge do allow a psychic warrior to learn powers from the lists of other classes.) A psychic warrior can manifest any power that has a power point cost equal to or lower than his manifester level. The total number of powers a psychic warrior can manifest in a day is limited only by his daily power points. A psychic warrior simply knows his powers; they are ingrained in his mind. He does not need to prepare them (in the way that some spellcasters prepare their spells), though he must get a good night’s sleep each day to regain all his spent power points. The Difficulty Class for saving throws against psychic warrior powers is 10 + the power’s level + the psychic warrior’s Wisdom modifier.

Maximum Power Level Known: A psychic warrior begins play with the ability to learn 1st-level powers. As he attains higher levels, he may gain the ability to master more complex powers. To learn or manifest a power, a psychic warrior must have a Wisdom score of at least 10 + the power’s level.

Bonus Feats: At 1st level, a psychic warrior gets a bonus combat-oriented feat in addition to the feat that any 1st level character gets and the bonus feat granted to a human character. The psychic warrior gains an additional bonus feat at 2nd level and every three levels thereafter (5th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th, and 20th). These bonus feats must be drawn from the feats noted as fighter bonus feats or psionic feats. The psychic warrior must still meet all prerequisites for the bonus feat, including ability score and base attack bonus minimums as well as class requirements. A psychic warrior cannot choose feats that specifically require levels in the fighter class unless he is a multiclass character with the requisite levels in the fighter class. These bonus feats are in addition to the feats that a character of any class gains every three levels. A psychic warrior is not limited to fighter bonus feats and psionic feats when choosing these other feats.


Fire Acclimated (Ex): Half-giants have a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against all fire spells and effects.
Powerful Build (Ex): The physical stature of half-giants lets them function in many ways as if they were one size Category larger. Whenever a half-giant is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the half-giant is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. A half-giant is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A half-giant can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

Common Sense Contingencies

This block is to provide contingencies for things that might happen but are not in the tactics, because they seem obvious. If they conflict with the tactics, the tactics takes precendence.


If I am unable to reach an opponent with my current weapon (too slow, flying, unable to move towards him, ...) and I have another weapon that is able to reach him (bow, improvised thrown weapon, picked up stone, ...) I will use this weapon.
If I am flanked, then try to use 5' steps to move out of the flanked position.
If there are multiple squares where I could move to, that are all equivalent according to my current tacticts, choose one where I have cover or can give soft cover to my team mates (unless that cover would give me a penalty to my attacks).
If I end up with nothing to do, and I can damage anything that belongs to the opponent (allies, mounts, dropped equipment, ...) I will do so.
If I still end up with nothing to do, I will move to a spot with cover or other location where I have better protection from the enemy. If I am behind cover and I have an item for healing myself and I am hurt, I will heal myself.

Although the arena was good training for him, Khamul had of late be considering extending his training in another direction. However for that he would need to find a teacher, someone familiar with the mental disciplines required for war.
Thus, taking a simple, straightforward approach, Khamul asked his partners for help in locating such a person...

Drawing on Crucio's knowledge of the local area, they hear rumors of an half-giant tribesman called Kroc, who makes his home in the mountains of the Dragor mounds on the outskirts of Gladius.

The trio easily traverse the mountain terrain and find themselves approaching a well built, stone structure, outside of which is a half-giant wielding a massive hammer as he hammers a bar of iron upon an anvil.

@WW: You can choose how you guys want to approach Kroc, just be aware that he has a pretty big reputation for a reason (he is a very high level Warmind).
I'll let you guys post your initial RP.
Tomorrow night I will progress this on to the encounter.

He had lead them all the way up here and now expects some free time while Khamul starts learning new battle techniques. But from what he has seen there is good game in this area so hunting should be interesting.
That all depends on if Khamul manages to convince this Kruc that he is worthy of beeing teached by him.

The half-giant pauses in his hammering as he notices the trio coming up the path towards him.

As Khamul steps forward and speaks, the half-giant grins "Indeed I can. He stands before you now."

Kroc listens carefully to Khamul's request and then after a short pause he replies "It has been a long time since I last took a student. I will consider it."

Kroc puts down his smithing hammer and sits down on a large stone bench in front of the building. He is silent for a moment, then he smiles, "There is something you could do for me. I used to enjoy omlettes a lot and there are a lot of nests in these mountains, however I am not so young and nimble as I used to be and climbing up to those nests to retrieve the eggs is something of a chore so I usually don't bother anymore. However if you would fetch me a couple of those eggs I would really appreciate it. If you follow the ridge up behind my house, you will find a couple of large nests of the north side of the mountain peak there. Bring me a couple of eggs and I'll teach you."

Kroc, is silent for a second, and then finishes with a short warning, "By the way, watch out for the parents."

As he stand back and listens to the discussion Crucio recognises the creatures that lay the eggs that Kroc is speaking about .... wyverns.

Khamul rolled really well on his diplomacy so you guys got the easier encounter ;)

Feel free to prepare as you like ... you guys will get up to the nest and manage to get the eggs before the furious parents descend on you. You will have 3 rounds to prebuff.
Give me prebuffs and initial tactics.

Crucio would like to recall bless before they leave Kroc's House.
Prebuffs would be: Bless from memory, Bull Strength on Khamul, shield from scroll on self, then wait what happens.

Tactics are so far as usual:
Khamul in front, protecting Crucio and Falko, trying to trip.
They'll have to state their buffs for themselves, though.

How far can we move ? I assume that outside the nest the terrain is rather rough (so maybe a few squares in either direction). Also, how about obstacles that inhibit flyby attacks from/to that direction ?

Falko will use rapid shot on the nearest Wyvern. keep shooting and use 5ft steps to avoid AoO if possible. If not possible he will just suck up the AoO and continue shooting.


@mucki: Das Problem ist das du nicht genug pp für 3pp Expansion & Force Screen hast. Deshalb wäre hier ein stone of expansion recht praktisch. Naja mal schaun was passiert...

Crucio will drop prone behind khamul (way inside his reach) and cast Magic Missiles, as usual. there's only one thing falko ever really does - shoot arrows, and lots of them. ;)

the idea is that initially both falko and crucio are inside of khamuls reach, so he can protect us from the attacks and draw the main attention to him.

rith messed up some of the rewards. he thought that khamul used your stone instead of what he did with the PoP I....

@mucki: Since the fight hasn't actually started yet, I'll allow the 3pp Expansion retroactively. Note however that Khamul cannot ready an attack until his turn, and both wyverns act before him.

Thanks for the Expansion! I didn't realize that they would act before me (i was a bit confused by your post), I understand it now :)

Since I won't survive another full attack, I'll try to keep the mum at bay using trip and 5' steps, hoping that the dad dies before he gets another attack. I'll also activate Rage for some extra hitpoints:

One minor change for Falko: On the first shot at the Mum(after the dad is dead) use psionic shot. Otherwise just fire away.

Crucio remembers that he better stands while fighting, and stands up. Continue with MM on Dad. Depending on how the rest looks like, Blindness on Mum if Khamul seems to go down without a proper fight.

Question: should Khamul with 20' reach not get an AoO against a wyvern that charges him in round#1?

Falko rapid shoots the disabled father wyvern but somehow is simply unable to hit (attack: 13(miss),14(miss))
The male Wyvern circles around again to attack the intruder that is peppering it with arrows but it’s weakness causes it to miss and fall into unconciousness (Wyvern (dad) - flyby attack: 20(miss))
The female Wyvern regains her feet and Khamul is once again unable to take advantage of opening (AoO: 15+2(miss)). The mother then attacks Khamul with sting (Wyvern (mum) - attack: 25(hit); sting damage: 6+poison(fortitude 23 vs DC17 - pass))
Crucio once again casts magic missile from his wand, this time at the mother (damage: 6)

Khamul feels the effects of the Wyvern’s poison once again, but this time he is barely able to throw them off. (Save vs secondary poison: 17 vs DC17 - success)

Leaving the unconcious, but surviving wyvern behind them, the three friends head back down to meet up with Kroc, Crucio and Falko giving occasional support to the weakened Khamul.

At Kroc's cabin, the half-giant looks up from where he is sitting as the trio approach. Noting Khamul's weakened state, Kroc states, "So you had a bit of a run in with the parents huh ... Did you manage to find any eggs?"
At Khamul's affirmative response, Kroc breaks into a large smile. and cheerfully takes possession of the large eggs.

After putting them somewhere inside his cabin, Kroc returns outside and sits down with Khamul where he begins to question him about his knowledge of history and psionics. Finally the imposing half giant nods slowly and speaks "You have the a good grasp of the basics, but you will need a greater knowledge of psionics before you can take the path of the war mind. Come back to me when you are ready and I will give you the instruction necessary to set you on the path"

Congrats, Even though Khamul had some bad luck to start with on his dice rolls, he pulled through in the end ... feel free to continue RP here as you wish ;)

Wow, when I saw that initial attack against me I thought we were done for.

Khamul stands up and bows to his future teacher. I am very grateful for your help Master Kroc. I will continue back to Gladius to further my training and return here once I feel confident that I am ready for your teachings."

With this he turns to his friends and smiles broadly. "And also a big thanks to you my friends. Without your help I would now certainly be food for the wyverns offspring. I hope that my training can repay that in the future."
