| lonewolf03-24-06, 10:51 AM | This is a quest for Istima to join the PSI Consortium. Please do not post here if you are not Zevox or myself. Quest Log: Week1: Istima deafeats a hellhound and retrieves an psionic artifact for the Consortium. Resources Used: Week1: stone of Inertial armor, stone of Force Screen, Stone of Vigor[ML2] Rewards: 900xp, 900gp |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 10:52 AM | Istima Telarc “Can you keep up with the speed of thought?” Male Goblin Small Humanoid (Goblinoid, Psionic) Lawful Neutral Nomad 3 [ECL 3] XP/TNL: 3,200/6,000 Height 2’8’’, Weight 39 lbs, Age 22 Deity: Oghma (God of Knowledge, Invention, and Inspiration) http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/fp_gallery/fp1/Oghma_p53.jpghttp://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/fp_gallery/fp1/Oghma_symbol.jpgKnowledge, particularly the raw knowledge of ideas, is supreme. An idea has no weight, but it can move mountains. The greatest gift of mortals, an idea outweighs anything made by mortal hands. Knowledge is power and must be used with care, but hiding it away from others is never a good thing. Stifle no new idea, no matter how false or crazed they seem; rather, let them be heard and considered. Never slay a singer, nor stand by as others do so. Spread knowledge wherever it is prudent to do so. Curb and deny falsehoods, rumor, and deceitful tales whenever you encounter them. Write or copy lore of great value at least once a year and give it away. Sponsor and teach bards, scribes, and record keepers. Spread truth and knowledge so that all folk know more. Never deliver a message falsely or incompletely. Teach reading to those who ask (if your time permits), and charge no fee for the teaching. Activities this week: Going on a task to join the Psi Consortium and forging documents to make Ingolë seem weaker than he really is. Half Goblin, half Blue, he was born appearing much like a regular Goblin but with the intelligence and psychic powers of a Blue. He took to riding swiftly, but was never fond of the Worgs the others chose to ride. He took as his mount a horse the tribe had stolen from a band of humans. He took no pleasure from the raids his tribe conducted, however, and because of this and his psychic powers was viewed with either suspicion, envy, or outright hate by most of the tribe. Unable to stand remaining with the tribe he set out on his own, eventually coming among humans who didn’t slay Goblins on sight. He became skilled in all manner of lore and a master of many languages, and disliking any reminder of his old tongue named himself anew (though in truth all he did was translate his original Goblin name – “Little Fang” in common – into Elvish and add the title “Learned” in Elvish as his first name). He speaks only in Elvish, which he considers the fairest of all tongues, unless absolutely necessary, and rarely if ever uses the Goblin tongue anymore. He has become a fairly devoted follower of the human God Oghma, God of Knowledge. He seeks not only to develop his skill in lore but to develop his psionic talents as far as they can go as well. To that end he came to Gladius, knowing that aside from its arena (which he could use to test his psionic talents without endangering his foes) it also housed several massive libraries and a guild of psionicists. Istima is short even for his kind, not even reaching 3’ in height, and his blue-green skin and lack of hair make him appear repulsive to most non-Goblinoids. He rarely leaves his horse Ingolë (whos name means “Deep Lore”) anywhere unattended, and he keeps him well cared for at all times. In return the horse is very loyal to him. His psicrystal, Nólë (whos name means “Long Study” or “Knowledge”), is at all times kept with him (usually in his pocket, though occasionally as an ornament on his garments). Istima tries to get along with most everyone, but he can’t tolerate most other Goblins or Orc-kin. Default Tactics None: Tactics sent individually. | lonewolf03-24-06, 11:34 AM | Sorry for the delay. After Istima has agreed to do a mission for the PSI Consortium, Karen took him aside to brief him on the mission: "As you probably know, The Arcane Order has recently started to reclaim their old campus that was filled with demons, devils and even a few dragons if roumors are correct. That gives us now an opportunity that we should take. In the old campus there was a grey elf called Sibidur Silverleaf that was a capeable mage as well as a psion. He fell, defenfing the campus but if my informations are correct a valuable psionic artifact is still hidden in his old room. Until now, the old inhabitants were too many to sneak in there undetected, but I doubt that The Arcane Order is already able to watch every corner of the campus, which gives you the chance to slip in there and get it for us. But you should also know that we dont want a war with the magesand thus will deny any knowledge of you, should you fail." She hands you a powerstone. "This stone should help you find the artifact once you are in Sibidurs rooms. Any questions?" |
| Zevox03-24-06, 12:05 PM | "The mages' guild and a Psionic Artifact, is it? Interesting..." Istima looks thoughtful at this. "I shall of course be glad to do this. Simply tell me where this campus is - I am yet new to this city, you understand - and where in it I may find this Sibidur's room. With luck I can be in and out before either Devils, Dragons, or Mages know of my prescence." No problem. If you'll let me, try using Psicraft to ID the powerstone, just out of curiosity of just what it is. |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 12:26 PM | Istima is able to identify the stone as a powerstone of Detect Psionics. "The Campus is in Arcadivius, one of the northern districts of Gladius. You should be easily able to find it there. Sibidur's room is somewhere on the third floor of the Magister Hall, the main building of the campus. Anything else?" |
| Zevox03-24-06, 12:34 PM | After giving this a little more thought, Istima replies, "For this, no. With such information I should be able to accomplish this with ease, barring trouble from resident monsters or mages. I shall return as soon as I may." Istima then exits the Psi Consortium guildhall, mounting Ingolë and riding to Arcadivius. |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 12:50 PM | With the rough description and a bit of asking around, Istima is easily able to find the old campus and determine which of the 8 buildings is the Magister Hall. There are about a score sages, minor wizards and workers busy repairing the buildings and cleaning the area around them. It is around noon at the moment. |
| Zevox03-24-06, 03:30 PM | Istima frowns, slowing Ingolë to a trot so as not to appear suspicious. He hadn't expected so many to be around if, as Karen had said, the reclamanation had just begun. He pondered his options. He could ask one of the mages if he could enter, using his identity as a scholar and interest in any library inside as an excuse to do so, but then would be without Ingolë should trouble show up and would need to sneak through the building, probably not managing to get past the sheer number of mages. He could try to sneak in, but that had the same problems as the first option - no Ingolë, since he was not stealthy at all, and grave difficulty at eluding so many and grave consequences if caught. Pondering this, he decides to wait until nightfall to try and enter, and so heads off to a nearby library he had passed earilier to do some reading on magic and devils to pass the time. Huh. You caught me off guard there. Wasn't expecting the place to be crawling with mages already, since only one of the reclamation teams has come back. Well, we'll see how this goes. |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 07:07 PM | As Istima returns by nightfall, he notices that most of the people he had seen are already gone, and a good deal of the rest are just preparing to leave. Only a handful of guards remain and patrol he outside, but they are much to few to cover the whole campus and he is quite sure that he will ba able to reach the Magisters Hallwithout anyone noticing. |
| Zevox03-24-06, 07:11 PM | Istima waits out those who are preparing to leave, then from the shadows of a nearby building studies the patrols of guards. Finding the perfect section to cross at just the right time he rides forward on Ingolë as quietly as the horse can go, heading for Magister's Hall, and looking for its entrance. |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 07:23 PM | The Magisters Hall has a big door as its entrance, but at the moment the door is laying on the ground outside and is beeing repaired. So the entrance is open and leads into a large hall with a couple of corridors leading into several directions as well as a great stair directly on the opposite of the entrance. The whole building looks pretty damaged, and repairs seem to start slowly. |
| Zevox03-24-06, 07:28 PM | Istima grins - the way was clear. He quickly nudges Ingolë into the hall, proceeding cautiously but quickly into the building and towards the stairs, on the lookout for any straggling mages or lurking Devils and intent on getting to the third floor. As he goes he calls upon the powers of one of his stones, armoring himself in case of sudden assault - Devils and Dragons would have no qualms about striking him in the back, he knew. Prebuff with Inertial Armor from my powerstone - lasts 1 hour. |
| lonewolf03-25-06, 07:59 AM | After drawing up a protective barrier Istima guides his horse up the stairs. They are clearly not intended to be climbed by a horse, but the goblin has Ingolë under control and reaches safely the third floor. The higher he ascended, the less repairs are done and the more signs of recent battles are to be seen. Istima starts searching for the quarters of Sibidur Silverleaf. But as he is just trying to decipher an old sign beside a door, a dog like creature stalks up on him and charges up to him and tries to bite into his leg, but the protective barrier wards the attack of. The creature resembles a big powerful built dog with short, rust red fur. Its markings, teeth and tongue are sooty black and it has red gloing eyes. Your turn |
| Zevox03-25-06, 08:19 AM | Can I ID this with one of my knowledge skills? Only type Istima can't ID is Undead due to no Knowledge (Religion) as of yet - anything else is fair game. Urging Ingolë back protectively Istima calls upon the second power of the powerstone he holds, brining a shield of translucent energy to life before him. He then stows the powerstone in his belt pouch again, studying the creature before him intently. Now, where had he seen such a beast before... Get Ingolë to withdraw (presuming hes based) to 60-70ft if theres enough room in the hall, and manifest Force Screen from my powerstone. If you're going to rule that his withdrawl doesn't prevent AoOs on Istima (I've seen it done both ways with mounts), manifest defensively before moving (its good to have a +12 concentration :) ). |
| lonewolf03-25-06, 06:09 PM | If your horse withdraws you must also do a withdraw action to not provoke an AoO. That also means that if you cast defensively and then move away you would still provoke an AoO from moving. |
| Zevox03-25-06, 08:15 PM | If your horse withdraws you must also do a withdraw action to not provoke an AoO. That also means that if you cast defensively and then move away you would still provoke an AoO from moving. Very well then, do that. Manifest Force Screen defensively, then let it AoO as Ingolë moves back to 70'. Just so I (and you) don't forget, use ride checks for cover when attacked, and use them to negate hits on Ingolë if the thing attacks him. |
| lonewolf03-26-06, 11:39 AM | Istima retreats and creates another barrier that reflects the bite of the monster. (bad roll on the knowledge check) But the dog follows and breathes a cone of flames onto both Istima and Ingolë. Suprised from this attack, both Istima and Ingolë fail to dodge the fiery breath and take 12 damage. The dog is now 10ft away. |
| Zevox03-26-06, 12:45 PM | 12 damage? I was hoping to go without using it, but... Badly burned from the unexpected assault, Istima pulls forth another stone, fortifying himself with its power. Feeling more confident, he directs Ingolë to a position alongside the creature, ordering him to strike at it with one of his hooves. Draw and use powerstone of Vigor for 10 hp, then move Ingolë to a position adjacent to it where if I manifest energy push I could possibly push this thing into a wall (don't worry about AoOs, but like I said use ride for cover or to negate hits on Ingolë), then use a ride check to make Ingolë attack with his hoof. Plan afterwards is to defensively manifest an Energy Push (Cold) then an Energy Push (Electric), both times trying to push it into the wall (have Ingolë attack before manifesting too). If those don't finish it, use an Energy Ray (Cold). If between those manifestations and Ingolë it still isn't dead, use my powerstone of energy adaptation (fire) as a precaution against a returning breath weapon, then full attack w/ Ingolë and my quarterstaff. |
| lonewolf03-27-06, 05:06 AM | After bolstering his body again, Istima guides his horse forward and a hit with its hoof brings a howl of the wounded dog. He retaliates, and only Istimas riding skills save her as her enemy would have penetrated all her barriers. Another hit with a hoof and a push of cold energy hit the dog again, although it resists all attempt to push it away and bites again after the goblin. But this time he misses by far. Just as Istima gets ready to manifest another energy push, Ingolë hits again with a hoof and brings the dog down. rolls can be found here (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=114). |
| Zevox03-27-06, 08:09 AM | Sighing in relief at the creature's fall, Istima puts the stones he hadn't yet stowed back into his belt pouch. He is interested in studying the creature, but knows that it is best to simply get what he came for and get back to Karen - no need to chance running into another such creature or a mage. He resumes his search for Sibidur's room, pulling out the stone Karen had given him so as to have it ready to use when he found it. |
| lonewolf03-28-06, 04:16 PM | sorry about the delay. consider the challenge part to be over. I will post a wrapup later tonight or sometime tomorrow. Updating the questlog now. About the other quest: Im not sure Im gonna be able to finish the fight this week, but I promise to have the whole quest done within the 3 weeks. |
| lonewolf03-30-06, 07:24 PM | sorry about the delay again Istima finds Sibidur Silverleafs quarters with little problems. The interieur is mostly broken down and it looks like there was a fire in here some time ago. Istima unpacks the stone that Karen gave her and scans the room for magical auras. The only one she is able to make out is in a corner of the room, a few inches below the floor. With some time and a little force, she is able to open the cleverly hidden secret compartment and takes a look at a interesting looking crystal shard. While she would love to examine the shard more thoroughly before taking it with her, she knows that time is pressing and puts it into her bag. Carefully avoiding another patrol, the goblin returns safely to the PSI Consortium, only to find out that there is someone already waiting for her, but not the one she had expected: A small translucent form of an halfling flies around in the guildhall. He quickly closes to you as you enter. "Hey there, I am Samuel, the house ghost here. You must be Istima, right? Karen said that you might show up later tonight, and said that I shall take care of it, since I dont need to sleep anyway. *pfft* As if I didnt have anything better to do. OK; I dont have anything better to do, but thats not the point! Anyway, back to you. You have the thing you were sent out to get? Great! I was hoping that we small guys show those large guys that its not the body that counts; Its the brains!" He laughs loud. "Got it? The brains! Well anyway you should give it to me. Actually I cannot TAKE it. One of the disadvantages of not having a body and such, but you put it into this case and I take care that noone takes it till tomorrow. Nearly forgot: Welcome to the guild!" Feel free to continue this roleplaying with me in the PSI thread, or here. |
| Zevox03-30-06, 07:55 PM | No problem. Just one note: Istima's a he ;) . Istima blinks in suprise at the appearance of Sammuel. Clearly he hadn't been expecting to encounter a ghost. "Eh, of course. Thank you," he replies, putting the crystal into the box. "I'd like the opportunity to study it myself, if the guild has no problems with that, or at least to hear what is found out about it. Things such as this fascinate me." "Oh, just so everyone knows, I'll be participating in the arena this week. I need to get some practice with my powers somewhere where I won't hurt anybody needlessly when using them, so I signed up there. If you all have a room available I'd be happy to move in and give you a portion of my winnings as payment - which I believe is the standard procedure here, yes? You see, I'm new to the city, and don't have anywhere to stay as yet." After a few moments of hesitation, the Goblin asks, "You're a ghost, are you? I've heard of them, but undead are the only creatures I've never studied in much detail. How did you come to be a ghost? Whats it like?" he asks inquisitively, his eyes alight at the thought of learning something new. |
