Feats Tool Improvisation Routine: Basic (Multiattack) (1st Level) Secondary attacks at -2 instead of -5. Class Abilities: Outsider Mechanical Nature: Unlike living creatures, Terminus-Est does not have a dual nature—its soul and body form one unit. As such, spells that restore souls to their bodies, such as raise dead, reincarnate, and resurrection, don’t work on an outsider. It takes a different magical effect, such as limited wish, wish, miracle, or true resurrection to restore it to life. Mechanical Nature (cont): Terminus-Est breathes, but does not need to eat or sleep (although he can do so if they wish). Weapon function library: Proficient with all simple and martial weapons, as well as natural weapons. (Claw and bite) Race Abilities: Berserker, drone. (Dretch) Damage Reduction 5/Cold Iron or Good: Terminus Est takes 5 less damage from any attack that is not an; energy attack (even nonmagical ones), spell, spell-like ability, supernatural ability or conducted with a cold-iron or good aligned weapon. Darkvision 60': Darkvision is the extraordinary ability to see with no light source at all, out to a range specified for the creature. Darkvision is black and white only (colors cannot be discerned). It does not allow characters to see anything that they could not see otherwise—invisible objects are still invisible, and illusions are still visible as what they seem to be. Likewise, darkvision subjects a creature to gaze attacks normally. The presence of light does not spoil darkvision. Immunity (Elecricity): A creature with electrical immunity never takes electrical damage. Immunity (Poison): A creature with poison immunity never takes poison damage (of any kind). Resistance (Acid 10, cold 10, and fire 10): Terminus-Est ignores up to 10 points of damage of energy damage from the indicated types per round whenever he is subjected to them. This is tracked seperately for each energy type. Natural Weapons: A dretch’s natural weapons, as well as any weapons it wields, are treated as chaotic-aligned and evil-aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. Spell-Like Abilities: Caster level 2nd. The save DCs are Charisma-based. 1/day - scare (DC 12), stinking cloud (DC 13). Reinforcement Matrix (Summon Demon) (Sp): Once per day Terminus Est can attempt to summon another drone (dretch (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/monstersDtoDe.html#dretch-demon)) with a 35% chance of success. This ability is the equivalent of a 1st-level spell. Telepathy (Su): Drone-class berserkers (Dretches) can communicate telepathically with creatures within 100 feet that speak Mechanus (Abyssal). Neural Net: Basic: Drone-class berserkers (Dretches) have an ECL of +2 and 2 racial HD of Outsider, starting them off as a 4th level character rather than a first level character. As a last ditch effort, the Wild Mage attempted to counterspell the final creature that the conjurer brought forth from the Beyond, a catastrophic surge of wild magic resulted in the arrival of this technologically advanced horror. Quickly dispatching the two exhausted magi, as per his root function (Eliminate all life), Terminus-Est was puzzled when they both promptly came back to life! The prize money for dispatching both of them was accepted while the robot attempted to understand what was going on. A few days later, Terminus-Est has come to the conclusion that its processing ability is insufficient to devise a way to destroy the Nimbus (which was explained as the reason that life is inextinguishable here), and has settled into a routine of exterminating life within the confines of the arena, which will not provoke the massive army of life that surrounds it. This serves its purposes in satisfying its instinctual directive... for now. The EHTC has piqued its interest briefly as the building looked like it had suffered a Berserker attack. Unforunately upon further examination it has proven to be a simple structual fire, but information extraction from the residents of the building continues... Buffs and Prefight Actions - None, yet. Start off in the right corner of my starting block with arrows in one hand and stun gel in the other, prepare a few stun rounds (2 or until they start getting close, whatever happens first), if they haven't been seen sneak out and find enemy, shoot at enemy while closing, once in melee/they fall asleep, drop rifle and attack with all weapons/CDG until enemy dies. Mutilate corpse to prolong period of death for as long as arena officials will allow. | Zevox05-17-06, 10:04 PM | For some weeks now the small metalic being had lain seemingly dormant in a corner of the EHTC base. It had briefly piked the interest of the Half-Fiend Asran, but had been unable to communicate with him, and so had gone into a sort of observant stasis, waiting for... something. After a time, however, it has again became a source of attention for the residents, this time with more interesting results. The Half-Fiend's curiousity finally overcame him. The dretch-like thing had sat there doing nothing for over a month now. Few summoning spells could keep it around that long, so he decided at last to inquire with Va'ria about the thing. "Tell me loremaster, is that... creature... one of your minions? I have thought so for a while, but I know of few spells that could keep it around this long if it is." The Elf replied to him simply, "That Dretch-thing? No, of course not. I'd thought it was one of your friends, like those 'Furies'." Asran merely snorted in reply. "No Tanar'ri is a friend of mine. But if its not yours, what is it doing here?" Deciding that letting the egocentric Baatezu princeling speak to the curious Demon-like creature was a bad idea, and slightly concerned that it was a spy of some sort, Va'ria went over to it, mentally readying a dismissal spell in case and inquiring simply in abyssal, "You have been here doing nothing for a long time, little one. Why?" A little opportunity to iron out Terminus' reasons for joining. Hope Sin doesn't mind me hijacking Va'ria for a moment - shes just the only other member of the Guild that speaks abyssal, so it was either her, Asran (not likely to leave a good impression on Terminus due to the whole Blood War thing hes been pre-programmed with by his father), or an NPC (which would be harder to justify with the PCs running things around the Guild). I'll try to keep her part short and simple so I don't accidently have her do anything out of character. This is my first time doing a full miniquest, so feel free to comment as you will, it can only help :) . |
| Gonbow05-18-06, 06:16 PM | The sudden appearance of another apparent Berserker Agent rouses Terminus-Est, diodes suddenly lighting up and a faint 'whirring' arising from his chest. However, rather than a prelude to an attack, this seems to merely be the thing's way of waking up. His reply is not vocal, but rather a bone-jarring wave of information sent directly into Va'ria's mind; the typical Tanar'ri method. "Transportation method unknown (Human teleportation development, worrying), inability to terminate life within stated definitions (Immediate revival, no nano-presence detected) prompts reconnasaince. This location damaged, suggests our influence. Confirm, eradication of life rendered difficult, analysis required. How may drone assist Agent (You)? Exchange of services, assist with acquisation or destruction of revival technology." OOC: Righto then! Doing good so far. Terminus-Est can communicate by writing, if the need is required as he does understand Common. ICly speaking, that's what he has been doing for most of the last month, listening to EHTC members speak and internalizing the language. |
| Zevox05-19-06, 12:47 AM | "'Revival technology?' Is it talking about the Nimbus?" Va'ria whispers to herself, trying to puzzle through just what this thing was. It had said something about terminating life "within stated definition" - perhaps it was more like a Golem than simply in appearance, and only acted on pre-given orders by its creator. That raised the curious question of its origins and just what type of being it was, but for now the loremaster held back on inquiring about those. It had asked for service exchange, and clearly thought she was one it could trust - an "agent", of whatever it worked for. A strange puzzle, but she believed she had it figured out, as much as could be from what it had said anyway. Destroying the Nimbus was neither something she knew how to do nor intended to do, but this Golem-Dretch could prove useful to the Guild if it was willing to work for her. Replying in abyssal again, Va'ria asks it, "You are willing to work for me in exchange for ithe destruction of the Nimbus, the magic that restores life within most of this city? An interesting offer. What are you called, may I ask, and why do you want the Nimbus destroyed?" Thats good then. |
| Gonbow05-19-06, 03:55 PM | The whirring noise picks up a notch after Va'ria's response, preluding another burst of mental communication, "Protocal confirmed. Assist in identifying source of 'magic'. Unique identifier query? Terminus-Est." A pause, then another burst which 'sounds' identical to the others but the sudden shift in wording suggests a change of intent, "What is your name?" Notably perhaps, the dretch-golem does not answer the last question. |
| Zevox05-20-06, 04:23 PM | Noting with interest the sudden change in the creature's wording, Va'ria replies "Terminus-Est, is it? I am called Va'ria Theladrais. Very well then, if you are willing to assist me and the others here, I would be willing to help you learn whatever I can about the Nimbus." Always eager to gain more knowledge, Va'ria was slightly relieved that Terminus' request had shifted from destroying the Nimbus to identifying its source, though also curious as to why. Since it had dodged to question before though she didn't expect she could get that information from it for the moment. A thought returning to her, she decides to see if Terminus could be trusted to do what it said. "If you're serious then, I do have a task you could perform now. One of the other members of the organization I work for, the East Habari Trade Company, has recently discovered a spy in ranks. We're not sure who he works for, but we'd like him eliminated, and we'd like it to be in a way that is difficult to trace so as not to alert those he works for. I suspect you could manage that, no? |
| Gonbow05-20-06, 11:59 PM | At the mention of 'others', Terminus-Est abruptly swivels its head, apparently identifying the extent of the others to be included in the argeement, but makes no immediate reply as Va'ria continues. "Covert Ops functions suggest that cessation of contact with a deep operative, will, in and of itself, alert the operative's organization. I do not possess resources to create a synthetic replacement for this individual; elimination can be achieved with a one hundred percent probability, but I shall need a way to bypass the Nimbus." The being, it seems, does not know what if any limitations exist on the Nimbus. Thus the information nessecary to do this favor can be payment in and of itself. Rather useful set of circumstances there, kill a person merely for the information of how to kill the person. |
| Zevox05-21-06, 02:51 AM | Va'ria smiles. Observant creature, this one. "Perhaps I misspoke. I meant that the spy's employers need to be unable to trace his death back to us - they need to be unable to realize we identified this man as a spy, or that we were responsible for his death. It should either look like an accident, or be totally incapable of having the means of death identified to begin with." "As for the Nimbus, don't worry. It was damaged a few years back such that it now only covers part of the city, not quite all of it. All you need do is catch the man in a part not covered by it, and he'll stay dead. Of course most of those areas not covered by it are now much more sparesly populated, but that will work to your advantage, since there will be little need to worry about witnesses. Fortunately, the spy has the strange habbit of taking walks through one such section every few nights with his pet dog. This may be part of his method of reporting back to his employers of course, but I'd hope you could handle surprises should they occur. Still interested in the task?" |
| Gonbow05-21-06, 11:12 AM | "The contract is accepted." Terminus-Est confirms, rather suddenly taking a step from the spot where it has stayed rooted for the last several weeks, making the floor-boards squeak in protest and leaving behind an array of pressure-dimples. "Provide me with a picture of the individual and directions to this location." If it were any other inductee to the E.H.T.C, aside from perhaps Asran, that would have been a question rather than a demand. But a little bit of rude directness might be overlooked from one of a radically different plane of existance. |
| Zevox05-22-06, 01:43 PM | Va'ria, not possessing a painting of the spy and not sure what other type of "picture" Terminus may be refering to, does the next best thing and has one of the Guild's lesser mages provide an illusionary image of the man (she cannot herself, having opted not to bother with the school of illusions in her studies). He is a little over five and half feet tall, with blonde hair and bright green eyes, and his clothes are those of a higher-ranking clerk. His face is marked by a short beard but, and his lean and not especially muscular. She provides Terminus with detailed directions to the section of the city where he can best intercept the man, telling him that he will next be there tomorrow night if he sticks to his current schedule. The next night Terminus heads out for the area, scouting it a little before nightfall to familiarize himself with the region. Finding a back alley to hide in with an excellent view of several streets the man may take, he settles in to await his prey. A few hours later he detects a life form corresponding to a human male of about the age and height he seeks headed down the street to his left with another life form corresponding to the canine companion Va'ria had mentioned. His systems awakening, he does a more thorough visual scan of them: yes, this one appeared to the man he had been sent to eliminate. Sorry for the fast-forward, but being as we've hit monday I figured it was best to get to the nitty-gritty and continue roleplay in the Guild afterwards (don't worry, the encounter isn't quite what it probably seems like it'll be). Also sorry I don't have a map for you, but I'm terrible with images. The man is 60' to your left currently and on the other side of the 10' wide street, moving at a leisurely pace (about 10ft/round in game terms). No evident weapons or armor of any sort. |
| Gonbow05-22-06, 09:45 PM | Holographic imagery is acceptable to Terminus-Est, surpassing it's expectations of these human's abilities, actually. The trip to the ambush point is done with the utmost stealth possible, first fliching a dirty brown halfling-sized robe from a laundry line so as to not give away it's mechanical nature to those that do manage to see him. Now that the target is detected, the berserker prepares for combat, locking its laser rifle into the mounting point on its arm and prepping two stun rounds; one for the man and one for the dog. OOC: Well, I rather expected to be at this point anyway, the fastforward was very logical and is about what would happen even in a MQ on time ;) So Terminus-Est is going to get out his longbow and prepare two poison rounds while the man approaches... Then shoot him, then the dog. |
| Zevox05-23-06, 12:29 AM | While Terminus is preparing his weapons to take down his targets, the dog begins to act strangely. Its ear perk up and its head turns quickly in his direction, its eyes narrowing. Most unusually, rather than emiting the sound most of its kind do when alarmed it then begins to speak in a language Terminus does comprehend. The man's eyes go wide with alarm, and just as Terminus is powering up for his shot he turns to run, but is caught in the back by the quick stunning blow and collapses in a heap. As Terminus is readjusting his aim for the dog, however, it begins to glow a light blue hue and stands up on its hind legs, its form elongating into a humanoid one with a Dog's head. A large sword appears in its paw-hand, and it turns its attention on Terminus, apparently now well aware of his position. Stepping between Terminus and the man's body the creature speaks in what sounds to Terminus to be perfect Abyssal, saying, "You will not take his life, wicked one. He is under my protection. Come out and face me, if you are not afraid, or I will come to you." I'm guessing you can tell what this foe is and what just happened, even if Terminus is clueless :) . I'd presume a little tactics change will probably be in order, so give me whatever you've got and I'll run the battle tomorrow. This should be interesting. (By the way, I won't penalize you for the arrow or poison for that last shot, since it is being used purely for the RP [didn't even bother rolling for it].) |
| Gonbow05-23-06, 01:51 PM | The sudden metamorphisis of the dog is indeed unexpected, causing a pause as the Berserker reassess the situation. Enhanced life-form readings, ability to communicate in Mechanus and protective functions... a Preserver! Perhaps these beings are the source of this 'Nimbus', it would certainly be something one of them would do for the worthless lifeforms of this planet. Priority change, eliminate Preserver, acquire information as to additional Preserver presence. Flipping the laser rifle back onto the back rack where it blends in against the metal body, the Berserker's low-level hum of activity rises to a whirr of steel cutting air as the buzz-saws most utilized for close combat are slid forward into the hand-mounts... Heheh. Mores the pity to mistake lycanthropes for preservers... Too bad I dont have silver weapons. We'll just have to be killing alot of them, now wont we? Since the do-gooder is giving me a moment, Terminus-Est will attempt to summon reinforcements (35% of getting another Dretch to help), then... If he is within 40', I'll charge him with a Buzzsaw, if not, activate my Force Shield (tattoo) and move forwad, then charge him the next round. Lay into him with full attacks of Spike, Claw, Claw, Bite once are in melee. If he is doing significant damage to me, activate the Force Shield and the Potion of Protection from Good. Use the potion of cure light wounds if I go to 10 or lower HP. (5-step away in all these instances to avoid AoO's, of course). If he runs away, shoot him in the back. If I get my reinforcement, have him flank the doggy and do full attacks. |
| Zevox05-23-06, 02:56 PM | Lycanthrope? No, not quite ;) . Those tactics should work fine enough though. Initative: Terminus 15 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=459457) ??? 7 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=459457) Terminus attempts to call up another Berserker Drone, but he is apparently out of range of any, for the effort is not answered (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=459458). His foe concentrates inward for a moment, and a golden aura seems to surround him - a strange occurance, Terminus notes. Terminus: 22/22 hp; AC 24 ???: ??+10/?? hp; AC 19 Terminus activates his force shield, protecting himself for the coming engagement, and moves out, closing to within 40' of the "Preserver". (Used: Tattoo of Force Screen) His foe displays some surprise upon seeing Terminus, but growls "Tanar'ri!", seeming to become more resolved in its duty. It grips the blade in its hand and charges forward. As it approaches Terminus can feel a strange weakening (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=459460) of its abilities, as though the mere prescence of its foe was sapping its ability to fight - not a good sign. The being's blade sinks (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=459464) deeply ([url=http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=459465) into Terminus, cutting (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=459468) the Drone down where it stands! (Crit damage: 23) Terminus: -1/22 hp; AC 26; weakened by unknown, Force Screen (ends in 10) Hound Archon: ??+10/?? hp; AC 19 |
| Gonbow05-23-06, 04:24 PM | Ge-ge-ge? Hound Archon!?! Zevox... That's far and away considered to be THE best example of how the CR system WoTC uses is completely unsuitable for use by CoCo! A Hound Archon will kill 99% of level 4 characters. If I was playing a hound Archon I'd be a ECL 11 character! I'm amazed I won. But it does fit better into his cosmology as a Preserver than most other things, I suppose. (And the potion of pro good was in my tactics anyways, so not so much of an adaptation there) And... yeah, I didn't win. Hound Archon's wielded weapons are considered to be Good aligned, allowing it go through my DR (Much as mine can go through its DR). I die in the first hit of the battle. Which is about right, since it is more than double my ECL ;) |

(And the potion of pro good was in my tactics anyways, so not so much of an adaptation there) True, the LA vs CR on it is wierd, but I wasn't aware it was considered overpowered like that. Sorry. :weep: And... yeah, I didn't win. Hound Archon's wielded weapons are considered to be Good aligned, allowing it go through my DR (Much as mine can go through its DR). I die in the first hit of the battle. Which is about right, since it is more than double my ECL ;) Are you certain? I specifically looked through the Archon descriptions, errata, and FAQ to find that before picking this for the encounter, and theres nothing in either the general Archon descriptions, the Hound Archon's specific description, nor the FAQ or Erata which puts its wielded weapons as good-aligned for overcoming DR (which seemed odd to me, but it was why I decided you could probably handle this: it couldn't overcome your DR, but you could overcome its). Edit: correction, I just checked again and noticed it, not sure how I missed it. Sorry, if I'd seen that this would have been a much different encounter. Entirely my fault. I don't suppose you'd care to try again next week? I'll make sure I pick something more suitable for an encounter. |
