Previous Incarnation

When he was still alive, Jonathon was a half-elf. He was despised in his youth of his half-breed heritage. His innocent heart turned black and he became a dark warrior, who found strange divine powers in the shadows. He did not know where he drew the magic from, but the feeling of power was overwhelming. The real source of his powers was Kanchelsis, the ancient Vampire God, who had charmed Jonathon as his servant. Jonathon failed his true master and proved not worth his lord. He was drawn into a crumbled castle near Gladius, where the Vampire God took a stronger grip on Jonathon, turning him into a vampire spawn - a blessing and a curse on the same time. Jonathon's powers grew into a whole new level, but he was eternally cursed into a filthy creature that were despised even by the true vampires.

It's twilight. Jonathon opens the lid of his coffin, arising from his crypt to once again stalk among the society that despises him and his kind.

But this time there is a creature to greet him in his grim tomb. An undead shadow is present, silently waving to gain his attention. A quick glimpse at the creature reveals that its spectral substance has been torn by some sort of violent injury and it's only by a dark miracle that the thing managed to avoid utter destruction.

It beckons the Graveborn, urging him to follow.
Abyssal Stalker

What was it this time? The last time that Jonathon was awakened by an apparation he had brought an ancient vampire lord back to the world. It was the way of the Vampire God to draw his attention. He'd better follow.

When it starts to look we are getting to somewhere, draw and use a potion of mage armor.

The shadow leads Jonathon and Misery through the city. Women, children and even grown men shrink aside at the sight of the horrible group. The shadow slows its pace and Jonathon begins to recognizes the neighbourhood. The trail ends at the Cathedral of St. Oleanus, former archvicar of Corellan Larethian. Little known to the average citizen, underneath the cathedral is a large necropolis filled with the graves of thousands of early elven residents of Gladius. In a dark, deconsecrated corner of the underground tombyard the cult of the Vampire God meets for its repugnant rituals.

The cathedral's churchyard has been torn open by some immense force. Sod and chunks of rock litter the area. Jonathon thinks it prudent to imbibe an elixir of protection before he and Misery climb and fly down into the graveyard underneath.

Once there, Jonathon sees blood, feathers and corpses scattered around. Some of the bodies are the long-dead remains which were animated into skeletons and zombies, and others belong to large, majestic winged creatures. A screech of rage and a loud slamming noise can be heard originating from the direction of the meeting place for the Vampire God's coven.

By an unusual coincidence, the necropolis map happens to look exactly like the Arena map. ;)

Can I get a rough description what I am facing? It sounds like something that won't buff too much, so I'd better throw us on the opposite sides. I should be mounted on Misery. My first action will be the mage armor (unless you allow it as a prebuff) and then I'll take out a potion of magic fang. Then Misery will take us higher so we can have a look at the thing.
hogarth

03-03-07, 08:43 AM
Your opponent is a huge winged beast, similar to those on the ground, but larger.
Abyssal Stalker

03-03-07, 09:43 AM
Looks like you aren't giving me too much options. Take out bow and have Misery carry me away from the beast all the time, and keep shooting at it. I hope 80ft double moves are enough to keep it away from us. I'm ready to take that -4 penalty and shooting between Misery's double moves. Let's see how that starts rolling
hogarth

03-03-07, 11:57 AM
Just to clarify, you don't want to buff with anything other than mage armor? Pretty cocky for an EL 9 encounter! :D
Abyssal Stalker

03-04-07, 03:46 AM
Well, I have no intents to be cocky, I just have very little to work with. I'm thinking that it's an yrthak, but it could be that oddity half-dragon elasmosaurus too.

If I get the chance to do that, then vigor from the dorje and energy adaptation (sonic) would be appreciated. It just takes some time to get them working, so this needs to happen so that Misery keeps me away from the beast with her speed. I have noticed that UPD isn't working too well and am already trying to swap it, as soon as it gets accepeted. If I can't keep away from it, I need to reconsider things. Jonathon should be at his best in melee, but I don't want to do that with something that has +12 touch attack for 6d6 damage... It would be nice to have Jonathon fight something that he is planned against, and not always huge monsters or something else over the top... LOL :)

Jonathon and Misery quietly glide over in the direction they heard the screech. Using the element of surprise, the vampire fires an arrow, but it flies astray.

The creature turns its head around 180 degrees and stares Jonathon in the face.
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM35_gallery/MM35_PG205.jpg
"More filth to be torn to shreds with my talons? I'll deal with you and then tear my way through this accursed barricade." The enormous creature's voice booms and the waves of sickening goodness coming from it are almost palpable. Jonathon can see that the vampire cultists have barricaded themselves behind some toppled pillars and items of furniture, but deep talon marks have been gouged in the makeshift barrier.

The vampire's second arrow flies true towards the beast and sticks in its breast. It screeches and flies in pursuit.

"Spare me from that sickening goodnes. You are no better than those you are after. Thirst for killing drives us both. I will drink your blood today and spill the rest of it to this ever-cursed ground. You are on Kanchelsis' unholy ground, celestial!"

And with that Jonathon sends another arrow at the massive bird!

Keep shooting and flying away with double moves. Maneuver behind the pillars so that there isn't a charge lane.

If the thing gets close, tap a tattoo of force screen.

Jonathon spurs Misery and lets fly another arrow, but it misses by a mile. The bird-creature pursues and Jonathon pierces its breast again with another powerful shot. The creature pursues again, but its massive bulk makes it hard to maneuver around the graves and tombs.

The vampire and owl play cat and mouse, but eventually the bird-king catches up -- but not before Jonathon has the chance to tap his force screen tattoo.

Now that he's within the reach of the owl's sharp talons, he considers his next move.
What now? The owl has taken significant damage, but it's not dead yet.
Abyssal Stalker

03-06-07, 01:54 AM
Retreat with Misery to the ground, staying inside the formation of the pillars and dismount. Make the thing squeeze. Down a potion of Magic Fang (try to use 5ft steps and cover to block AoOs). Have Misery move to flank and go toe-to-toe with the owl, attacking with slam+energy drain attacks.

Oh, and when it squeezes, I think it can't take a 5ft step, but it needs to spend a move action to do so.
hogarth

03-06-07, 08:27 AM
I don't think there is a place where it will have to squeeze to reach you -- it has 10 ft reach. Am I missing someplace?
Abyssal Stalker

03-06-07, 08:35 AM
Ah, you're right, of course. I wasn't paying enough attention. In that case I need to adjust a little. Have us retreat so that I get to down a potion of magic fang. Then have Misery move us to ground level, dismount and use Skin of the Duergar for expansion to get rid of the reach problem. After that melee, Misery moves to flank.

If something goes wrong, I'm hit with a +15 damage smite attack, etc. Please retreat and let fast healing do the trick.

BTW, our last positions are a bit funny, we seem to be partially in the same square.
Abyssal Stalker

03-06-07, 08:38 AM
I'm at work now, but I will be at home in 2-3 hours. I'll be around at that time and can adjust if something odd happens, if that kind of time frame is OK to you?
hogarth

03-06-07, 09:00 AM
I'm at work now (9 a.m. local time); I'm afraid that I'll probably have to wait until tonight to finish the fight off. Sorry for leaving things to the last minute.
Abyssal Stalker

03-06-07, 09:11 AM
OK, no problem. If my tactic breaks, feel free to improvise in that point. Everything is usable on my sheet. Remember that I don't need to drop my bow in order to attack with natural weapons. If everything goes totally wrong, then retreat and try run-and-shoot-tactics. Basically Misery can keep that thing away with her better speed.

Jeesh, that thing must have at least +20 to hit... That's hoping for good rolls for Jonathon and bad rolls for mr. H.

This is quite important to me, because I am not allowed to give this another shot if I fail because of the limit.

Thanks anyway!

Jonathon and Misery retreat from the owl-thing's clutches. The creature screeches "Return to the grave, wretch!" and attempts to slash Jonathon's back, but its attack misses, despite being charged with extra deadliness. Jonathon uses the respite to draw and drink a potion of magic fang.

Misery moves to the side slightly, then Jonathon dismounts and increases in size. The owl approaches and melee is joined. At first, Jonathon is shocked when his and Misery's attacks miss badly and he feels the creatures powerful talons ripping his chest despite his eldritch protections. But master and steed quickly turn the tables; the vampire spawn sucks the owl's life force into himself while the steed scrabbles at the creatures shining feathers. One more powerful slam, and the otherworldly bird-general is no more.

Jonathon and Misery fly over to the barricade. With his unholy strength, he and Misery are able to shift the collapsed pillars to the side, exposing a way through. Inside the dark chamber are a number of cultists who eye the vampire spawn warily.

A xeph woman steps forward and greets Jonathon sardonically. "Hail, conqueror! I suppose we owe you our lives, do we? Oh...and Kanchelsis, of course." There's something strange about her demeanor that Jonathon can't quite place his finger on.

"Greetings, servants of The Rake! What is it that has drawn the attention of the Heavens towards this place? Kanchelsis must be pleased to your deeds, priestess. Normally, I'd expect his servants able to take care of their own problems," Jonathon responds, trying to figure out the role of the xeph in the big picture.
Nice encounter, luckily that smite attack missed. Good thing you noticed that mistake in Jonathon's slam attack, I'll have to fix that. It's nice to have positive violations!

One thing, it looks like you have used those temporary hp from energy drain so that they wouldn't stack. Are you sure about this? The wording in energy drain seems to indicate that they stack, but I'm not quite sure.

"I know not which disgusting servant of the heavens has disclosed our lair. One of the acolytes says he espied the form of a spellcaster opening up the roof of the necropolis and bringing these...creatures...in with a planar gate. We barely had time to send out some servants of unlife to defend us and then retreat to our sanctuary.

When things turned against us, I sent one of our remaining servants to summon you, not knowing if it would work or not. Thank the powers below that you arrived in time! Obviously you are the chosen of the Blood-drinker; if you require any service from our small coven in the future, you need but ask...

I don't know if the temporary hit points stack or not, so I erred on the side of caution. It didn't matter, luckily.

"Whatever it was who called the celestials, the immediate threat is gone. I scanned the churchyard when I arrived, but only the tombstones were watching. Send some of the zombies to fill the hole they drilled to the ceiling. After that is done, you will search the EHTC warehouse in Vilis. You will meet me there." And with that Jonathon jumped on his gravespawn mount and spurred Misery towards the hole in the ceiling. The duo reached ground level and Jonathon let Misery disintegrate in to nothingness. He searched the churchyard, and found some footprints. A rusty iron cross had grabbed a small piece of fabric. Jonathon examined the purple piece of cloth. The material was fancy and favoured among the high-ranking priests of Gladius. "Whoever it was, he is gone now..." Jonathon's form seemed to melt in the shadows, as he disappeared to the night to drink from the sleeping vein of Gladius.
