As with all young Maenads, he swam quite a bit and was taken with the sea, spending some time learning his father’s trade as a sailor. Like most of his people, he trained also his psionic abilities by enrolling in the town militia. Though he was more militant in his studies, focusing on swordplay more than on psionics, he quickly earned the respect of the others for his skills. He went on several missions beyond the village when aid was requested from a nearby town at war with some Orc hoards, and there met a young priest of Ilmater. The two became fast friends, and the priest would often speak to Alboreth of the beliefs of Ilmater. The young Maenad found that these principles tugged at his heart – helping the poor and suffering, placing others’ lives above ones own, dedicating oneself to a greater good – and eventually asked his friend how he may serve this God, since his talent was in martial prowess and not clerical preachings and healing magics. His friend, initially quite surprised (for as with most Maenads, Alboreth is quiet and often keeps his emotions carefully guarded), informed him of the Knights of the Weeping Palm, a small order of Paladins devoted to Ilmater and stationed in the mighty city of Gladius. Alboreth left for the city as soon as he was able, and was initiated into the order. He fights in the gladiatorial arena to develop his prowess before he leaves the city again to help the needy wherever he may go. Alboreth wears his blue-and-gray Full Plate armor whenever expecting battle or for some formal ocassions, but removes it in any casual circumstances (for even with his strength, such a heavy load is uncomfortable). Beneath it he wears a practical set of leather clothes, largely blue and brown in color, and he wears a cloak whenever he is not wearing his armor. He is quite tall, even for a Maenad (few Maenads in history have passed 7’ in height), and can be somewhat imposing on a first glance, though his soft demeanor usually alleviates any such fears in those he wishes no harm to. His skin is slightly blue-tinged (unusual for a Maenad but not completely unheard of - it tends to signify Water Elemental anscestry) and sparkles with greater luster than most of his people, as it is inlaid with more bits living crystals than most Maenads’, which adds to the image of a warrior of light that accompanies the title of Paladin. He never reveals his last name to anyone, for a peculiar tradition of his village was to keep one’s surname a secret from all save one's blood relatives. Unlike most of his people, who wear their hair in long braids, his ebony hair is cut short in a simple, practical style, save for one long braid reaching over his shoulder and down to his waist. | TelinArtho01-11-06, 04:50 PM | [Introduction] Alboreth spent some time talking to the warriors of the CEF before he was guided to Enzoul's office. A servant opened the door and closed it again once the paladin entered. Enzoul Ratrani's office was covered with all kinds of papers and religious things but the interior of the room was way below a priest of his standing; though it was comfortable and very clean. The High Priest sat behind a heavy wooden desk in an overstuffed chair bearing the banner of the Celestial Forces. A calm aura but also an aura of might radiated from the cleric. Alboreth was sure that this man was a force to be reconned. Lord Enzoul was not alone though. Next to him was a young woman barely in her twenties and she was one of the most beautiful girls Sir Alboreth had seen since he entered Gladius. Her long blonde hair curled down her back, big exotic eyes with some golden specks looked innocently at the knight and hinted to a slight otherwordly heritage - perhaps there has been an aasimar somewhere in her lineage. What prevented Alboreth to greet her with a smile were the tears flowing down her cheek. "I greet you, mighty warrior of the Knights of the Weeping Palm" Enzoul opened with a bow "I have heard of your order and the deeds you accomplished. You can be proud to call yourself a member of this group as can we that you are interested in joining our own cause." Enzoul stood up and walked around the table towards the paladin. "I don't want to waste time with long introductions for haste is what we need now. This is Slyanna Ed'Esamo, one of our maids. It is probably the best if she explains you the reason for her sadness. Slyanna?" The young female stood up and gave a shy knee to Alboreth who returned the gesture with a nod. Then she began to tell the tale. "Good Sir, I have a twin sister known by the name of Laurania. She works down in Duken Marina as a barmaid in one of the sailor taverns with which she earns her living. Two weeks ago, she told me about a strange man that she met during her night shift. He was cloaked in black leather and had an accent - probably somewhere from the east. He was very nice in the beginning but she became suspicious when he asked questions about me. Yes, she is always very protective when I am involved so I dismissed it as an overreaction. *sob sob* Oh had I only listened to her *sobsob*" Enzoul layed a hand on her shoulder and guided her back into her seat. "Yesterday evening, Slyanna received a letter from an unknown source - probably the man in black leather - that said that Laurania was in his 'custody'. To see her free, he wanted information about the Celestial Forces from her. Our aims, missions, even guard shifts and when I go to bed. Failure to do so or if she would tell anyone would result in the demise of her sister. Fortunately, Slyanna showed me the letter regardless. We have no idea who this man is or for whom he works but there are apparently new enemies of the CEF that we are not aware of and the sooner we find out, the better it is. For now, Laurania must be rescued and if you accept I will give you this mission." Sir Alboreth just had to look into the pleading eyes of Slyanna to be sure what he had to do. "The only hint we have is the "Hook and Wooden Leg" tavern in Duken Marina where Laurania has worked. Perhaps there, someone knows more about the stranger. Feel free to talk to Slyanna if you need more information. Good luck, Sir Alboreth. May the gods be with you." Ask Slyanna anything that you wish, but otherwise you are free to head to Duken Marina |
| Zevox01-11-06, 11:14 PM | Those few doubts Sir Alboreth yet held about joining the Celestial Forces vanished when he had heard the whole of this assignment. Truly it could be nothing but the will of Ilmater that guided him here at this particular time, for in this task he saw nothing less than the most sacred of Ilmater's edicts placed before him - to aid those who suffer and to take thier suffering upon himself. He felt a sharp pang of guilt, though, when he realized that he was actually taking comfort from the horrid situation. He tried to dismiss it, reminding himself that such was the life of one devoted to the Crying God - had he not been warned of such many times by his fellow Knights, as well as by the cleric who had first taught him of Ilmater? Still, such knowledge was no comfort, and the guilt would not abate. He resolved instead to use it to fuel his determination to see his task through to a swift and happy ending. Kneeling beside the sobbing maid, Sir Alboreth put his hand on her shoulder and attempted to reassure her. "Don't worry, Slyanna. I'll ensure that no harm comes to your sister. I know of the "Hook and Wooden Leg" tavern. I frequently work as a sailor myself, you see, and with luck some of my friends may be patrons there and could perhaps have seen something, though I have never stayed long at any of the sailors' taverns myself. With Ilmater's blessings I shall see this task through as swiftly as may be. However, if you will, I'd like to know if your sister said anything more about this stranger's appearance - it will help me narow my search for him. Did she mention any other distinctive features or markings? Facial hair, eye or hair color, height, a tattoo or scar perhaps, anything?" |
| TelinArtho01-12-06, 10:50 AM | Slyanna shook her head slowly, thoughtfully - trying to remember if there were tidbits that should could piece together. All she said was that he was very handsome - and his accent - she couldn't tell me where it was from but nothing she'd ever heard before... I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. And she bursts into tears. Enzoul wraps a comforting arm around her and leads her off to her quarters to rest. |
| Zevox01-12-06, 03:05 PM | Alboreth gives a nod of understanding - he hadn't expected that Slyanna knew anything further, but anything would have been helpful. As Enzoul went to lead her back to her quarters he said to him simply, "I'll depart at once, then," not bothering to add the obvious "as I don't want to give this kidnapper time to learn of Slyanna's actions and follow through on his threat." Off to Duken Marina and the "Hook and Wooden Leg" tavern, then. |
| TelinArtho01-12-06, 06:40 PM | Sir Alboreth tooks his time as he travelled across Gladius to Duken Marina - Gladius' wharf district. The scent of salt water permeated the air and the breeze was brisk with the onset of winter. It didn't take long to find the Hook and Wooden Leg - located as it was right on the upper cliffs overlooking the ocean below - but still was on the brink of falling apart - despite its apparent popularity. Nearby, steps led down to the docks - many ships were in port - busily taking care of business. The Hook and Wooden Leg's insides leave much to be desired. a halfling tends the bar - one hand replaced with a hook and a leg replaced with a wooden one. He greets Sir Alboreth upon his entry. Mornin' thar sir. What kin I get fer ya? |
| Zevox01-12-06, 10:52 PM | Looking about at the tavern's patrons, not all of which could be described as the most savory of sorts (and noting that a number are watching him, though of course tht could simply be due to his unusual appearance), Alboreth decides this converstation would be better had in private. Leaning in so as not to be heard by the patrons of the tavern, he addresses the bartender. "Good Halfling, may I have word with you in private? It concerns one of your employees. Unless I'm mistaken, you probably know to whom I refer." Eh, not exactly an overly important note, but you may wish to know that Duken Marina is one of the Districts of Gladius (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7221227&postcount=3) ;) . |
| TelinArtho01-12-06, 11:04 PM | No problem... Cat's own fault for not pointing that out to me... hrumph... I'll edit the entry above to fix that... |
| TelinArtho01-12-06, 11:25 PM | The halfling gestures to a corner of the bar - So a beer then? Comin' up. The halfling didn't say it to draw overt attention - but he knew it would look strange for him to be talking to someone without even a drink in hand. Once he made sure that the other patrons inside were taken care of, he joinede Alboreth at the end of the bar, slightly disappointed the man had drunk little of the beer. 'Tis my finest stuff... ah well. Slyanna sent you then? Tough tidings these be. Laurania was a fine worker. Jessie over thar jus' don' compare. He sighs a little as he reflected on better times. Ah but reflectin' tain't goin' ta help her. Ya heer fer informashun - aren't ya? Truth be told - don't have much ta tell ya. She took a likin' to a nice patron these past few weeks. He treated 'er real nice - but I didn' trust 'im. I was right! He must live near here - for he's by ev'ry night 'til she dispear'd. I used ta' see him all the time with a couple of orcs down near the Swanky Mermaid - that trade ship at the end of the dock. Strange him hanging 'round those orcs. Pretty boy that he was in that leather - but who'm I ta judge. |
| Zevox01-13-06, 12:48 AM | Alboreth frowned. The mention of Orcs was disconcerting to him, for his own experience with the race was limited to the savage hoard of them he had helped fight while in the psionic militia of his home village. "You're right - these are ill tidings. An easterner with Orcs and a trade ship..." Alboreth spends a moment pondering just who these people may be that wished harm to the CEF. A few ideas form, but he dismisses them - he needed more information before jumping to conclusions, and he could think of only one sure-fire way to get it. Regardless though the important task to focus on currently was ensuring Laurania's safe return. "In any case, thank you. Though as you say this isn't much to go on, it may well be enough." Slipping his hand into his coin purse, Sir Alboreth slides a gold piece to the Halfling. "For your trouble - and the excellent beer." He explains with a slight smile, taking another sip of the brew. Before getting up though Alboreth asks but a single question further. "One last thing, if you will - do you have any better description of this patron? Laurania had said little to Slyanna about him - simply that he dressed in black leather and had an unusual accent, probably eastern. Anything else you may recall about him would be most helpful." Once he has the answer to that, Alboreth will head down to the docks by the Swanky Mermaid, trying not to draw attention to himself (if thats possible for a 7' tall warrior with blue-tinged, crystal-imbedded skin) to see if he can locate the man or the Orcs. If he does he'll try to overhear anything they say and trail them if they go anywhere as well as trying to keep from being noticed (yeah, I know he has terrible hide and move silently checks... theres naught for that I'm afraid, he'll just have to be as quite as possible and hope these guys are half-deaf I suppose), at least until he hears something about where Laurania is being held. |
| TelinArtho01-13-06, 12:31 PM | Eh - didn' pay him much 'ttention to be honest. I didn' trust 'im as far as I could throw him... but other than that - no - no good description I can muster. With that, the halfling goes back to tending his bar and his few patrons and Sir Alboreth leaves. Overlooking the docks, he's able to figure out which ship is the Swanky Mermaid - and indeed sees two orcs propped up against the ship's hull - one smoking a pipe and both in conversation. The boat is alive with activity - apparently getting ready to shove off soon. |
| Zevox01-13-06, 04:13 PM | Alboreth frowns. If the ship was preparing to shove off, he feared what may happen to Laurania if she was held aboard - and feared for whether he may be able to help her if the whole ship was involved. He sets off, heading to the ship as quickly as he can without looking suspicious in hopes of overhearing something important from the Orcs. Like I said, I'll try and get close enough to hear what the Orcs are saying. Hopefully the activity on the ship will prevent them from hearing my appoach. |
| TelinArtho01-13-06, 04:24 PM | With a plan in mind, Sir Alboreth picks a person on the docks located slightly past the orcs to pretend to ask for directions - hoping that passing by the orcs will yield some fruit. As he walks by, Sir Alboreth is able to maintain his appearance of heading on to the man at the end of the dock - passing close enough to hear (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335029) the conversation of the orcs. Galladi will be pleased when he gets this one. She's a fine pick indeed - Hugart did well in his research. The one with the pipe looked back at the ship just then. Looks like we better go get her - ship's almost ready. And the two orcs head off towards an alleyway between a small marina and a dockside supply shop. |
| Zevox01-13-06, 04:34 PM | That was precisely what Alboreth had hoped to hear - Laurania wasn't on the ship, then. Thanking the man he had been speaking to, he heads off in the indicated direction (conveniently the same direction the Orcs were headed). He tries to look as though hes headed towards the supply shop, then follows the Orcs into the alley, hoping he isn't too late to catch a glimpse of them if they're rounding a corner or entering a doorway. Follow the two and try to stay out of thier sight. Once they lead me to Laurania I'll confront them (manifest Skate and Force Screen before doing so if time allows). If they have her in a cage or some such be sure to do so before they open it - I'd prefer not to have to deal with them threatening her. |
| TelinArtho01-13-06, 04:42 PM | Sir Alboreth takes a moment to look at the wares of the supply shop, but finding nothing to his liking (and seeing the orcs turn a corner behind the marina) - he jogs down the alleyway as quietly (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335038) as a dwarf with a few too many beers in him At the edge of the building, he sees the orcs open a door heading into the back of the supply shop. They seem to have left the door open. The door is 10ft away from you and you have no sight within since you are in line with it. |
| Zevox01-13-06, 04:48 PM | Ow, a 1 for a MS roll with my armor check penalty... somebody must not like me very much. Manifest Skate and edge up next to it as noiselessly as I can, sticking my head around to see if I can spot the Orcs, Laurania, or the man, or if I can hear anything further. |
| TelinArtho01-13-06, 04:58 PM | Edging up as quietly (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335047) as can be, Alboreth just pokes his head around the corner - only to be confronted by two swords (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335049) coming down at him! One cuts into the side of the door - but neither manage to do him any serious harm. Muffled screams can be heard close by. [Initiative (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335053)] One orc takes a five foot step into the alleyway (to negate Sir Alboreth's cover of the door) and swings his sword down (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335054) but it slides off his armor without harm. Your action |
| Zevox01-13-06, 05:16 PM | Quick-stepping back out of the Orc's reach, Alboreth calls upon his familiar talents to summon a glimmering shield of energy to defend himself, then unsheaths the Greatsword from his back. Stepping forward, he swings (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335067) at the creature that had stepped out to challenge him. Alboreth 5' steps back to manifest Force Screen and draw his greatsword, then attacks the first Orc. Roll: AC 15, 11 damage. |
| TelinArtho01-13-06, 05:32 PM | Don't know if you meant to include 2 rounds of actions, but that's fine. Sir Alboreth steps away and protects himself further - drawing his greatsword. The other orc moves past the first and swings (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335079) his sword lethally (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335084). Sir Alboreth staggers from the blow and is unable to prevent the first orc from stepping forward and attacking (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335088) as well - but luckily his force shield protects him. Sir Alboreth cuts down the other orc, cutting a deep gash across his chest. The remaining orc swings (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335094) half-heartedly - demoralized at seeing the other cut down. Your action [Status: Sir Alboreth 14/31, Skate (ends in 7), Force Screen (ends in 8) Orc 1 xx/xx Orc 2 xx-12/xx dying] |
| Zevox01-13-06, 05:41 PM | Yeah, the two actions was intentional, but mostly because I wasn't expecting a crit on an ac of 22 :embarrass . Wounded, Alboreth calls out to Ilmater to guide his stroke and aid him against his foes, striking heavily (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335102) at his pig-nosed foe. Alboreth swings on his second foe using Smite Evil; AC 16, damage 12 (ac 14 damage 11 if not evil). I think that probably ends it, eh? Edit: Oops, my mistake - I had added +5 to Alboreth's damage swings instead of +4 :embarrass . Editing posts, though I doubt it changes anything. |
| TelinArtho01-14-06, 09:51 PM | The orc falls to the ground before the door and a startled scream (still muffled) comes forth from within. Sir Alboreth peeks his head around the door. It appears to be a small storage room for the supply shop, and huddled up in a corner is a set of blankets with a head peeking out - gagged and after Alboreth removes the blankets, he sees that she is bound as well. Indicating that she should be quiet - he removes her gag and asks her if she is Laurania. Nodding slowly, she thanks him quietly. Nicely done. Time to bring her back to the Celestial Forces so she can be introduced to Enzoul and subsequently hired... Off of the orc bodies, Sir Alboreth finds 2 potions of Cure Light Wounds and a decent amount of money. |
| Zevox01-14-06, 10:22 PM | Nice. Theres one more thing I'd like to try, however. Solely a roleplay aspect, but it will have a small effect on my used resources and possibly a major one on the subsequent events. Relieved to find Laurania safe and sound, Alboreth carefully cuts her bonds with his longsword - hes never been very good with knots - and says to her hastily, "I've dealt with the two Orcs who were holding you here, but I'm not sure where the man who initiated this is. If you'd like, I'd like to take you back to the Celestial Forces compound, at least until we can be sure he won't trouble you further. Plus I know of at least one person there who would like nothing better than to see you safe and sound." He added with a smile. Leading Laurania out the back of the building, Alboreth indicates she should wait a moment, He cringes at the wounds on the Orcs - even if they were his foes and Orcs, he hates inflicting such unecessary suffering on others - and inspects to see if either is yet alive, reaching into his belt pouch for his wand as he does. If either Orc is alive, I'd like to use my Wand of Cure Light Wounds to keep him from dying (hopefully this won't restore consciousness to him), then restrain him with my manacles (using a second casting of the wand if its necessary to remove him from the "dying" state once hes restrained). Aside from the obvious RP value of the fact that Alboreth isn't interested in killing unecessarily, it'd be interesting to see if Enzoul could get any information from him with, say, a Zone of Truth spell. I'm thinking "plot hook". ;) |
| TelinArtho01-14-06, 10:34 PM | Sir Alboreth inspects the orcs briefly to see if either is going to recover from their wounds. The first one felled appears to have bled out, but the second looks like he might survive. Sir Alboreth touches his wand to the orc and the orc starts (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335962) to cough. Quickly, Sir Alboreth retrieves his manacles and applies them to the orc's wrists. The orc protests slightly before Sir Alboreth knocks him out. Plothook has already been placed... However, having the orc to question will certainly reveal more |
| Zevox01-14-06, 10:46 PM | Excellent :) . I'll post in the guild about the quest's success and the captured Orc. Picking up the unconscious Orc - evidently the walk back to the CEF was going to be a tiring one - Alboreth nods to Laurania and says by way of explanation "There is no reason he need die if I can turn him over to the proper authorities. Also I believe Lord Enzoul may be able to get him to tell us more about the man who kidnapped you and whoever he may be working for - with truth magic, of course." He adds hastily, noticing the shocked look Laurania was beginning to display. "After you if you will, mi'lady." he says with a slight bow and a gesture northward - towards Arkhein and the CEF. |
