Maya's great-great-grandfather, Chadat ben-Undomo, was a smith in the United Habari Sultanate when the young prince of Gladius travelled there in search of adventure. The two of them became fast friends, and Chadat left with the prince when he returned to the prince's kingdom. He married a young woman who had also escaped Habari with them, and he eventually became the royal armorer. His son and his grandson followed in his footsteps, until the king was overthrown about fifty years ago. Chadat's great-granddaughter married Josef Redwine, and their daughter was Maya.

Maya would like nothing more than to restore the royal family to its former glory. She grew up on tales of the heroism of the royal line, and their adventures with her own ancestors, and she longs for the return of those days. She hopes to one day carry on the tradition of her family, and become the royal armorer of a new monarch of Gladius, and hopefully a champion of the throne as well.

Nature Sense (Ex): A druid gains a +2 bonus on Knowledge (nature) and Survival checks.

Wild Empathy (Ex): A druid can improve the attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check made to improve the attitude of a person. The druid rolls 1d20 and adds her druid level and her Charisma modifier to determine the wild empathy check result. The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.

To use wild empathy, the druid and the animal must be able to study each other, which means that they must be within 30 feet of one another under normal conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time.

A druid can also use this ability to influence a magical beast with an Intelligence score of 1 or 2, but she takes a –4 penalty on the check.

Gnome Traits (Ex): Gnomes possess the following racial traits.

Low-light vision.

Weapon Familiarity: Gnomes may treat gnome hooked hammers as martial weapons rather than exotic weapons.

Public Knowledge: Mort Noir's roots are difficult to trace due to her reclusiveness. There are rumors that she is in fact half-sisters with a famous half-elf politician of note in Gladius named Mortiniellia..and there are even more rumors that Mort chose her name because of this friend. While Mortiniellia does not seem to condone violence, it is clear that her enemies that do condone violence routinely dissapear and are never heard from again.

Mort Noir has yet to be seen. Indeed- her very existance is but a rumor.

-----

Actual history:

Mort Noir's real name is Sojourn and she lived in a small forest gnome community near the city of Gladius. She was content with life and even befriended a Half-Elf that lived in the city. Frequently she ventured into the city to see this friend, who was named Mortiniellia. Mortiniellia taught Sojourn the secret to unlocking her mind, and with this knowledge Sojourn was able to become a great hunter.

Then the Council came.

Rumors of forest goblins raiding the city got to the Council and they sent a routine adventuring party to eliminate the goblins. The adventuring party came onto the forest gnome community in the night and slaughtered them all. Sojourn barely escaped, hiding from the attackers. She fled to the city and stayed with Mortiniellia for years, fearful of further attacks.

Mortiniellia did everything in her power to determine how such a mistake could be made. The adventurers were eventually caught, put on trial, and then let free by the council.

Two days later that group of adventurers tried to take Mortiniellia's life. They nearly succeeded, but towards the end of the attack everything went dark- and the adventurers were killed in a hail of arrows while Mortiniellia fled with open wounds still pouring her lifeforce out onto the street.

Sojourn on that day put aside her old name and took on a new one: Mort Noir, or the Black Death. Since then no one has succeeded an assassination attempt on Mortiniellia.

To this day Mort Noir kills anyone that she even remotely suspects of threatening Mortiniellia.

Sea hags are not subtle and prefer a direct approach to combat. They usually remain in hiding until they can affect as many foes as possible with their horrific appearance.

Horrific Appearance (Su): The sight of a sea hag is so revolting that anyone (other than another hag) who sets eyes upon one must succeed on a DC 15 Fortitude save or instantly be weakened, taking 2d6 points of Strength damage. This damage cannot reduce a victim’s Strength score below 0, but anyone reduced to Strength 0 is helpless. Creatures that are affected by this power or that successfully save against it cannot be affected again by the same hag’s horrific appearance for 24 hours. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Evil Eye (Su): Three times per day, a sea hag can cast its dire gaze upon any single creature within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Will save or be dazed for three days, although remove curse or dispel evil can restore sanity sooner. In addition, an affected creature must succeed on a DC 15 Fortitude save or die from fright. Creatures with immunity to fear effects are not affected by the sea hag’s evil eye. The save DCs are Charisma-based.

Amphibious (Ex): Although sea hags are aquatic, they can survive indefinitely on land.

Skills: A sea hag has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.

At the first light of dawn Mithos and Maya rode towards the Bard College. They both seemed to be excited, Maya in her heart, Mithos only on the outside. They would get to seek the righful heir to the throne of Gladius.

Maya's motives were clear - loyalty burned in her heart, loyalty to the true King who would one day rule again! What treachery was in Mithos' heart, that was not to be told to anyone. When the time was right, they would see it.

The duo arrived at the Bard College. They were supposed to meet someone here. Then a gnome girl appeared from the shadows of the gate, silently like a ghost. Mithos was about to send the girl to tell people that they were here, when the gnome spoke: "It's about time! We should be meeting Benjamin at the docks. We are running late and it's all your fault!" The girl hopped behind Maya. "Well, hurry up!"

OK, now you have met. I hope I got Mort right. You should be meeting an old sailor, Benjamin Glasseye in the harbour and he will tell you more about the heir. As soon as McJarvis tells me more about him :)

Edit: Oh yeah, feel free to start posting!

I was kinda expecting for you guys to throw some RP between your characters, as far as I know Mort and the others haven't yet met. Anyway, I'm going to continue so that we get things rolling!
The noble warrior and the treacherous paladin rode with the mysterious gnome through the city towards the docks. Mort wasn't too talkative and the others decided from her bitter tone that it was better to leave her alone. Mithos rode first with his fierce warhorse making their way through the crowds gathered on the several marketplaces.

"There!" Mort pointed her finger at something that looked like a typical tavern where sailors gathered to drink and gamble. The other two looked at eachother but said nothing. It definitely was not a place for a king.

The warriors strapped their horses and followed Mort inside the tavern. It was called "The Drunken Sailor". The name was suitable, as they all noticed when they entered. The air was thick and filled with smoke, but it couldn't cover the stench of the place. There were several hard-boiled sailors, drunk as a duck allthough it was early morning.

Mort found her way to the corner of the bar, where an old man was sitting. He seemed to be quite sober, allthough he smelled like several days of drinking. "Is this the one we are looking for?" asked Mithos. "Of course not. This is Ben," Mort answered. "Or Benjamin. They call me the Glasseye." The old man tapped at his left eye that was clearly a replacement. "And you might be?"

I don't really know what your reactions will be, so feel free to throw in some RP. Ben is not the heir, but knows where the man is.
McJarvis

11-17-06, 10:02 AM
Just to clarify: This specific heir will not be king, he's just a distant cousin of the throne....I suppose for all our characters know he will be the king eventually though, eh? ;)

I honestly didn't see this thread go up, or I would have RP'd a bit. Sorry about that! Now I'll just wait for the others to introduce themselves...
Zevox

11-17-06, 10:32 AM
"Mithos Durrol, Paladin of Siamorphe and third son of House Durrol." Mithos replies with a bow and a smile. After Maya has introduced herself, he continues, "We're seeking the descendant of the royal line of Gladius - there is a new Guild rising in the city which would see him restored to his rightful place as ruler of the city, and we are from them. We hope to safeguard him to the Guild so that he may work with us towards that goal. Our... friend, here," he says as he indicates Mort, "has said you may know where he could be found."

Inwardly, Mithos' anticipation builds. If this man actually knew where the heir could be found, he would be one step closer to his goal. The next would be gaining the heir's trust and ensuring he would make a pliable puppet. It is more important to rule than to sit on the throne, Gargauth taught, and Mithos had taken that lesson to heart.

"A Paladin?! And a member of the Armorers?! Aye, I tell you Sojourn, you've gotten yourself into some company, eh?" Mort layed an angry stare at the sailor. "Mort." she hissed.

"Oh, sorry about that...Mort. Well, the man you are looking for is Galath Teurgenhaas. A merchant that owns the Blue Mermaid. They are setting sails today and Galath will be leaving too. He has been aboard after he met that woman and has barely stepped on solid ground. Let me say, there is something wrong with her. I've heard rumours... But you should be going now, they are leaving soon. Towards Egyn Keep, I think. You till have time to cathc them. But let me say, you'll be having hard times getting Galath leave the Blue Mermaid."

"A little show of our gratitude." Maya passed couple of coins to the old sailor. "You have been of great help."
MindWandererB

11-17-06, 02:34 PM
To the others, Maya says, "Come. We need to move quickly before this man gets out to sea. There will be plenty of time for questions later."

She nods one more time to the sailor, then strides quickly to the door.

Sorry--I did see the thread, I was just busy and couldn't think of anything to say. That and I was trying to figure out where Maya's horse came from since hers is dead at the moment, plus I thought you were waiting for more info from McJarvis before continuing (I didn't see the edit go up).
Abyssal Stalker

11-17-06, 02:37 PM
Yes, I'm aware of the horse issue. It's just for RP there, actually. I figured you wouldn't be running around without it.

"A wise course. Our thanks again for your aid, sir." Mithos says with a quick bow to Ben before following Maya out to where they had left thier mounts.
Abyssal Stalker

11-18-06, 08:11 AM
The trio leaves the Drunken Sailor and heads towards the northern parts of the docks. Mort shows the way, stopping a couple of times to ask for directions to the Blue Mermaid. The ship is anchored to the docks, sailors running around as if they are preparing for leaving. A big and nasty-looking sailor is dragging another sailor, that looks like passed out towards the ship. The most of the merchandise is already loaded.

The ship looks fast, but clearly made for shallow waters. On the open sea it would be in trouble. A tall man dressed in fine clothing stands on the deck with a shorter woman on his side. The man is tall. His features are those of a noble. His black beard is short and his hair is combed back and strapped on a pony-tail. By the looks of his and the way he supervises things tell the trio that he must be Galath. The woman on his side is much shorter than the man. She is a beautiful blonde, also wearing fancy clothes. They are obviously lovers.

"We need a way to get aboard," Mort says to the others.
Who wants to be the spokesman? Possible reaction: Galath isn't willing to leave his ship, but he is certainly interested in hearing what you have to say. On the other hand, they are leaving soon. The pirates have been of trouble and a couple of strong arms might be useful aboard. (Yes, I'm expecting you to jump aboard ;) if you didn't already guess, but I'd like you to RP this out - I just keep things rolling but you create the story!)
McJarvis

11-18-06, 02:18 PM
I'm fine with Zevox doing the talking. Mithos has the highest charisma, after all...
MindWandererB

11-18-06, 02:24 PM
"Mithos and I will have to do things the old-fashioned way: by talking to him. You might want to be prepared to sneak aboard in case we fail."

Maya tethers her horse and walks up to the bottom of the gangplank. "You look like you're in quite a hurry to put an overladen, flat-bottomed ship out into high waters," she calls up to Galath. "Anything we can help you with?"

Heh, sorry, beat you to it. But I don't think designated spokespersons are really necessary with the play-by-post format.
McJarvis

11-18-06, 02:29 PM
Mort nods, then mounts Stylo and discretly sneaks to a position from which she could easily move to board the ship.

Mort will ride her snake, which will use it's climb/swim checks to sneak aboard the ship :-) If she can reach the deck with a double-move action from the water itself, she will just stay in the water until a possible scuffle sounds. (and, of course, listen in on the conversation at hand)
Zevox

11-18-06, 03:34 PM
Mithos nods at Maya's words. "I'm sure we can reason with him - surely if he knows about his lineage, he must have some idea of the benefits of what we will suggest. And if it proves otherwise," he says, his eyes hardening, "We investigate this women that Benjamin said he is with and see if he was right about her." The words are heavy with implication, as both of the others could guess what they would have to do if that turned out to be the case.

Tethering Noble to dock beside Maya's mount, Mithos pats his horse on the neck before following Maya, and nods at Mort as she gets into position.

Shouldn't really need a spokesperson, like MWB said, but I suppose Mithos is the logical choice if we do. Hes used to public speaking, individual and group deception, and other such things, after all.
Abyssal Stalker

11-19-06, 02:13 AM
I'm sorry, I didn't present what I had in mind too well. What I ment to ask is that how did you intend to tell Galath that he was the heir. If he is a distant cousin, he probably hasn't got a clue that he is the one who holds the right to the throne. And I guess that in cases like this there would be several people who would have the right to claim the throne as theirs. So I figured that Galath has found different means to succeed in life than just hoping that one day the Council would be overthrown and replaced by a monarch. It would be quite shocking if someone just walks into your ship and says "Come with us. You are the rightful heir of Gladius' throne." I was just wondering how on earth did you want to persuade Galath into your business. After all, it might be quite dangerous to him. In cases like this people tend to get "killed accidentally".
MindWandererB

11-19-06, 03:24 AM
That's what I understood, all right. Which is why I led with small talk--and a possible delaying tactic to keep him here, for now.
Abyssal Stalker

11-19-06, 04:01 AM
"Ha! Did you hear that, Damar? The strangers seem to think that the Blue Mermaid can't make it to Egyn Keep!" says Galath to the captain with a loud voice. His words are followed with a burst of laughter from the the crew. "The Blue Mermaid is the fastest ship around here and I have the best captain on this side of the world! The Mermaid has been to places far beyond your imagination. Surely you must see that a trip to Egyn Keep shall be like a walk in the park!"

Meanwhile Mort has sneaked to the other side of the ship and listens carefully from the water. She hears some members of the crew mutter. "Hrmph. Those days we didn't have that woman here."

Maya and Mithos walk their horses to the deck. "Good enough. Then you will hopefully show us what this boat can really do? There seems to be enough room for couple of passengers. Will you take us to Egyn Keep, lord Galath? I am Maya Redwine and this is my companion Mithos Durrol."

"Ha! A challenge, eh? Well, Damar, we are always up to challenges, aren't we? You seem to know me, but let me introduce myself properly. I am Galath Teurgenhaas, a merchant and a seafarer." As Mithos and Maya reach Galath and shake hands with him, the blonde woman has moved inside. "Of course I have to charge a small fee for our services. Otherwise I wouldn't be a decent merchant, wouldn't I?" Galath says smiling.

Damar goes to make sure everything is ready and leaves Maya and Mithos with Galath.
MindWandererB

11-19-06, 04:20 AM
Maya makes some show of looking around the ship as prepares to pull out of the harbor, as if she actually knew anything about the business. What she's really paying attention to is Galath's leadership style.

When Galath finally hands command of the ship over to the captain so he can take the ship out of the harbor, she decides she is satisfied with his ability to take command and says to him, "Masterfully done, Galath. Much as I would have expected from you, considering your heritage."

Sorry if I'm taking some liberties with control of the plot, but we need to finish the RP and resolve the fight in only half the week.
Abyssal Stalker

11-19-06, 05:39 AM
By all means. That's actually what I've been hoping from you guys all the time. I've been trying to push thiings forward, but I've created the quest so that the RP needs to come first. That's one thing I need to improve in the future.
"My heritage?" Galath raises his eyebrow. His attention gets drawn elsewhere when the blonde woman comes. "Ah, there you are my love!"

"Greetings, fair lady...", Mithos greets the woman. Maya turns around to see the woman and is shocked. Something is wrong! The form of the woman whirls and switches. Mort has climbed on the edge of the deck and instantly realizes what is going on. "It's an illusion!" she shouts to the others from her hiding place.

"She is manifesting!" Maya realizes from the faint humming that comes from the woman.
Surprise round: Maya, Mort and Blondie. Mithos didn't beat the will save for the illusion, the other two rolled 20's.

Blondie uses her surprise to prebuff.

Mithos and Maya are about 20ft away from Blondie, Mort is at the other side of the ship, about 40ft away.

Mort will cooly dismount(fast dismount) & urge her animal companion to attack & engage. snake: (move(supprise), double move(round 1), then charge(round 2))

Mort herself will hide/tap chameleon wand(round 1)(while moving for better cover, if necessary), hug a powerstone of prescience, offensive(round 2), & start sniping(rounds 3+) from max distance possible while still hiding.

If discovered, obviously tactics will change.

If she needs to create conceilment in order to hide properly, use a smoke stick & hide amongst various ropes/crates that must be on deck.

If she needs to make a will save-> She will use "empty mind" power to give a +2 to will save.

I just noticed-> Mort is at a bit of a disadvantage, her darkness doesn't take effect until her next 3FC. Oops:)

"I knew this wouldn't be easy....at least I get to enjoy myself in the meantime" Mort mused to herself, while preparing to help her companions.

The deck is suddenly under total chaos: Mithos explodes into action - allthough not seeing through the illusion, he takes the warning as the truth and attacks the woman. He swings his halberd to trip the woman, but she is faster and steps out of the halberd's way!

"NO!" shouts Galath, as her lover is under attack. "Stop them!" The sailors start running around and are shocked by the sight of Mort's massive snake appearing on the deck! Under the cover of the chaos Mort hides herself behind some barrels near the central mast. She blends into her surroundings and remains hidden.

But then the true chaos strikes. The illusion fades from the woman, revealing a horrid sight! Instead of a beautiful woman, there stands an awful hag! The sight of the hag is so terrible, that all but Mithos can't stand it and they feel weaker! "He is MINE! You hear me, MINE!" the awful creature screams and claws Mithos in fury!

Galath falls in agony by the sight of the hag and sailors start to jump out of the ship.

Summary:

Mithos: 9/21hp full hp
Mort: (chameleon, 6 strength damage) full hp
Snake: (4 strength damage) full hp
Blondie: (force screen) full hp
Maya: (vigor, 4 stregth damage, delaying) 29/19hp

Figured to stop here if you want to re-evaluate your tactics. Try to give me some guidelines for couple of rounds, so I can speed things a little.

Edit: I forgot that using a Su-ability is a standard action, so the hag didn't get to attack in that round. So nevermind those attack rolls in InvisibleCastle.

Wow, nice hit at Mort's overall effectiveness. At least she carries way less equipment than her max light load, so she still isn't encumbered...I'm glad I packed her full of a ton of other less-powerful class abilities so she wouldn't be completely worthless ;). Bards RoXxOrZ!

Actions will now be:

Next Round:
Standard Action: Cast Silent Image: Copy of Mithos. Note that there is NO will save unless the Hag attacks it or studies it for a full move action. Hopefully it'll eat a hit off of our brave fighters :)

Move Action: Retrieve Powerstone of Prescience, offensive. Use free action to yell out in Sylvan for the fighters to move away from the heir while the fight progresses.

Follow up rounds:

Manifest Prescience Offensive & Metaphysical Weapon. Attack stats for Mort after these should be Longbow +0(including -4 no precise shot penalty), 1d8+1 damage (x3 crit, piercing) Snipe from max distance possible. If possible, 80->90 ft of distance is preferred(though I realize we're on a small boat...)

Stylo(Mort's snake) actually isn't slowed down much by the strength attack, since the snake's attacks depend on dex(weapon finesse) and poison(dependant on Con). No changes in her tactics.

Mort winces at the strange feeling of the strength leaving her body. "I'll need a little extra something to take this horrid creature down..." and with that she begins to construct an illusion in her mind, making her imagination manifest itself in reality.

After finishing casting her spell, she fumbles around in her pack for some small stones that she knew she brought along....

If the Hag uses any more Gaze(or visual type) attacks, Mort will also be using a powerstone of Synesthete in her buffs progression so that she feels light, and then will close her eyes while sniping.

"Foul creature," Mithos says, turning his gaze away from the Hag, momentarily shaken. He quickly steps back and pulls a scroll from the case hanging at his belt, reading off the incantation to better defend him from evil beings. Simultaneously, he sends out a mental call to his familiar, hoping Regal will be able to distract the witch.

5' step back, draw & cast Protection from Evil from the scroll. +2 AC and +2 saves vs the Hag - I have the feeling I'll need the latter for that gaze, since Mithos' will save is a bit low at this level.

Oh, and Mithos will use his empathic link to signal his familiar for help. In a situation like this he'd likely have left him with his horse, so wherever Noble is is where Regal would be coming from.

Edit: Oh right, multi-round plan. I intend Mithos to buff with Mage Armor next round, then resume trip/attacking, and get both Regal and Noble to attack the Hag too (preferably flank with Noble). If things get ugly hp-wise... well, it'd be nice if I had a chance to come up with a new plan based on when that occurs, eh?

@ MWB - Might I suggest a little grease here, since Maya's attack has just taken a sizable hit? Tripping her up while Mithos casts could help a lot.

Zevox: Don't forget my snake will be there next round as well. Your allies can flank with her. If we get lucky she might even poison the thing....and _maybe_ my snake won't go down in 1 round....heh

And the thing has to deal with that illusion Mithos as well :-) At the very least I think my allies/illusion will buy you two rounds....

I'll still wait for tactics from MWB, but I can run Mithos' action. Maya will act right after him due to delaying.
Mithos feels a little more safe with the blessing of the scroll in effect. His loyal hawk springs into flight and attacks the hag. The sea-witch swings it's claw, but still Regal manages to scratch the hag badly!

I think it's safe to assume that Noble's defend trick is triggered at this point so it'll also attack. I don't wish to keep your potential ally out of the action, after all you have prebuffed it. I still need to roll the save vs uglyness. Passed, so no strength damage for him.

Noble gallops after the hawk, striking at the nasty hag. It seems fearless as it's master when it hits hard with it's hooves!

round 2: Maya, Mort, Snake and Blondie haven't acted.
Mithos: (protection from evil) full hp
Regal: 2/10 hp
Noble: full hp
Maya: (vigor, 4 strength damage) 29/19hp
Mort: (chameleon, 6 strength damage) full hp
Snake: (4 strength damage) full hp
Blondie: (force screen) xx-9/xx hp

I didn't see that Mithos actually goes before me!

Mort will have the illusion pop into existance in the 5ft space between the hag and Mithos. :-)

Put this into a new post instead of editing so you would see it

edit- Oh right, she'll also concentrate on the illusion until it is disposed of(succesful will save, etc)

Ach, I forgot about Regal's tiny reach! Get him out of there please - familiar death in a quest, even an MQ, means loss of xp (and corresponding gp) and no familiar for a year. Very bad situation. If you want to edit his attack out to make sure she doesn't strike him, thats fine too, just get him out of the battle.

I'll wait for MWB until tomorrow. Tomorrow night I need to finish the fight. It will be short, I'm sure about that. Which way it swings, I don't know about that. Now I'm going to bed. You have still time to post if something crosses your mind and you wish to give more contingencies. I believe that what you have already given is enough, but in case you want to make sure... If needed, I will use improvisation but still try to make sure that your characters don't suffer any serious damage (like ally loss). That is of course if your tactics fail, but hey, you are six against one.

Sorry, bad timing for me life-wise.

Round 2: Draw and fire bow, expending focus on Psionic Shot.
Round 3: Use my last remaining PP on Grease.
Round 4+: Attack with greatsword. Try to flank.

Only thing I can think of to add is that, if Mithos' hp gets low (less than 10), cast shield from his scroll and heal back up to 15+ with his wand. Hopefully that won't happen.
Abyssal Stalker

Maya takes out her longbow and takes a shot at the hag, expending her focus at the time! The shot is true and lands at the hag's shoulder. The foul creature screams in agony and hatred, cursing our heroes!

Mort creates an illusion of Mithos, right between the real Mithos and the hag, trying to create confusion. The hag isn't fooled that easily, and it disbeliefs the illusion.

Stylo moves to base the hag, and bites it in the ankle. It's teeth pierce easily through the thick skin and venom starts to burn in the hag's veins. It is too much to take and the hag falls. It screams it's final words, but they fade into nothingness: "My love..."

Congratulations! You beat the hag 6-1. I'll post her stats at the front page, if you are interested. She still had some surprises up her sleeve. It's hard to stand against that big amount of attacks when you are alone.

Neat! I feel kinda bad for my plans to nix the snake now...she's finally gotten a kill.

I feel I should point out the hag should never have gotten a will save vs my silent image(unless there is a CoCo house rule out there that I'm not aware of) -> the will save is only made if she interacts with it, and interaction is defined as using a move action to study an illusion or attacking/being attacked by the illusion. (Even though this has 0 impact on the outcome)

:)
Abyssal Stalker

11-21-06, 02:05 AM
Wouldn't you call it "interaction", if there are two guys who look exactly the same standing in front of you, but the other doesn't smell or sound anything. :) I believe that the spell in question is more like supposed to use to create certain diversions and not straight combat confusion. (Like: "Look, there's some odd fellow standing, let's go take a closer look and interact with it...") Mirror Image is the spell for these situations.

But you are definitely right about the move action - it should've occured not until the hag's turn.
McJarvis

11-21-06, 02:10 AM
Skip williams defined interaction in a rules of the game series on illusions(don't have it with me right now). Since Mort was more or less useless as an archer(no precise shot, massive penalties due to str damage), I figured I would tank a hit no matter what. Either the thing takes a chance and attacks the image or it takes a move action to study it -> either way it's denied 1 attack, since the move action denies a second attack :) Listening to see if it made any noise might work-> if the guy had spellcraft.

But that expounds into the metagame...

Good plan, I don't deny that. But take a look at the hag's stats at the first page and try to guess what it would've done if it got only a standard action. :) That is of course if it disbelieved the illusion. But I would still have given it a listen check to decide which is Mithos - the illusion Mort created didn't make any sounds. They are still in different squares and nothing in the rules actually makes it mix it's targets. RP-wise yes, and I was ready to give it a shot, but onyl with strict limitations. But if you don't mind, let's move this conversation into the tavern, shall we, and leave this thread for the final RP - you still have a lot to do before Galath is through with his recent experience and ready to begin as your king-puppet :)

Galath manages to get up when Mithos makes sure that the hag is dead by chopping of it's head with his halberd. The heir looks pale and he throws up to the sea. The trio can clearly see that he is shaken by the experience. They can only wonder for how long Galath has been under the illusionary magic of the hag. Mort recognizes a magical item on the possession of the hag; a headgear that allows it's wielder to take any form they wish. Galath has been the victim of a treacherous and twisted deception with surprisingly humane motives.

Despite of Galath's bad shape, a dangerous fire burns in his eyes as he grasps Maya from the shoulder and asks: "What foul magic is this? What have you done to E'lian?" The man is still confused of the situation where his lover has suddenly turned into a horrible monster.

You know, a hat of disguise is good for diguising and all...but I would think that the moment he made love with a merely disguised hag, there would be technical issues. ;)

Mort walks up to the hag and takes off the hat of disguise. "Good Sir, I believe this device will answer your questions....

Donning it, she makes herself look like the blonde woman, then takes it off immediately & hands it to the man.
Zevox

11-21-06, 12:29 PM
"Magic." Mithos comments as Mort displays the item. "I've seen its like before. This Hag was posing as that woman to get to you. She wanted to do something with you, though I know not what. I can guess as to why, however."

He nods to Maya as he continues, "As my companion indicated, your lineage is quite unique. It is likely where you inherited your leadership talent from, and perhaps other skills we ave not had occassion to notice yet. It is almost surely why this beastly being sought you out in particular - and it is why we are here. You, my liege, are perhaps the last living descendant of the former Kings of Gladius."
Abyssal Stalker

Yes, I know. I took some liberties with the story, it just sounded like a nice little twist. For gods sake, they couldn't do what you are suggesting, this is D&D! :P
"What a fool I have been! I believed E'lian loved me, but all the time that...thing was deceiving me. For what reasons, I do not care to know! I still have hard times believing all of this. What can a man trust, if not his own eyes?

"Thank You, noble heroes, for setting me free! How can I ever express my gratitude to You?

"You speak of my heritage? But I am merely a merchant - and Gladius hasn't had a king after The Years of Hell. It is come to my knowledge that the descendants of the previous kings were all slaughtered my Angosh!"

"Not all of them, my lord! Two of the royal line survived and were kept in secrecy. Others took them under their wings and raised them as their own. The other of them was your grandfather, the man who was known as Ulgart Teurgenhaas!" says Mort revealing the secret legacy of Galath.

Am I getting the history correctly? The Year of Hell and everything. Teurgenhaas isn't Galath's true name, just the merchant family that has raised the descendants of the former king. I hope this is OK with what you have had in mind. You can come up with the true family name, I'm not too good at them and it's your guild after all.
MindWandererB

11-21-06, 02:39 PM
"No... one cannot trust their own eyes, in these days or in any other." The only true guide is the heart, Maya added silently, and it worries me that yours is so easily fooled by such a wretched beast.

Out loud, she says, "It matters not, now. What's done is done. But I hope this illuminates the gravity of your situation--you cannot afford to go about your life as before. Someone else may try this again, and there may not be stalwart heroes around to save you. You had best come with us. Either sell the ship or entrust her captain to do your business, but for now I do not think it is safe to be associated with the Mermaid."
McJarvis

11-21-06, 02:41 PM
Mort nods in agreement. "Indeed...Lia Mortiniellia sent us here to escort you back to her estate. She will gladly protect you and any other members of the royal family that we find in our adventures."

I wonder if anyone will ever get annoyed at my choosing a random color for speaking every post...

"The news you bring me are the kind of that one finds hard to believe. But your deeds are not forgotten. I shall listen to what you have to say, and would like to meet this...Lia Mortiniella.

"But making me give up the Mermaid is too much to ask. It has belonged to my family for decades and I shall not see it in the hands of some greedy pig who sweats even when eating, because that is what my rivals are! Though, my urge to the seas isn't what it used to be anymore, not after the events of today.

"Damar! I shall leave the Mermaid in your good hands. I shall send a messenger once you return from Egyn Keep to inform you of future shipments. Here, take this to Alvar once you reach Egyn Keep. We have agreed of this trade - he will try to fool you, but I'm sure you know the true value of the goods.

"And this thing... Throw it into the depths." He gives the hat of disguise to Damar along with the trade contract. "And get rid of that." He points at the corpse of the hag.

Galath stands with his head held high, allthough our heroes can see that he must be hurting inside.

"Lead the way." He says to Mort.
