| MitzaVolchenko12-15-06, 12:20 AM | You will be facing 2 large monsters. That is all you get ;) Submit tactics for the city map. Ceilia readies herself, excited and nervous to be striking a blow at the tyranny of the flappies of CEF. The liberation of Gawane and putting one in the eye of the sanctimonious, high and mighty, oh so perfect, angelic horde puts a grim smile on her face. |
| Zevox12-15-06, 10:45 PM | Ceilia rode down the city streets, smiling amiably at the few passersby at this time of night. It was obvious from the way they reacted that the majority of the people here were on WAR's side - most smiled and waved back, a few gave a few words of encouragement for her cause, and only a small handful treated her with indifference or hostility. She knew she had gained some small fame for both herself and WAR through her actions both in the arena and against the Celestials, so she knew it wasn't based on her holy symbol that these reactions were coming, but rather the Guild. As she approached her target - the outpost of the Celestials in Gawane - she decided it was time for a few wards and strengthening spells of the Goddess. She first invoked a spell of strength, using the divine sparks embedded in her mind to grant her compact muscles greater power. Then using scrolls she called up a shimmering blue barrier from the power of her faith and gave herself and Foresight the blessings of the Goddess. Slinging her shield into place, she rode forward, prepared to face whatever defender may meet her. Tactics? You not have time for a play-by-post or something? Well, once I'm about 2 minutes ride from the target, cast Bull's Strength from memory, then advance and when I'm 1 minute from it cast Shield of Faith and Bless from scrolls (remember bless affects Foresight too). Equip shield and invoke its heartening ability (+5 temp hp for 4 minutes), but leave the other hand open in case I want to cast. Presuming these things don't look like spellcasters or humanoids, make the first move casting Spiritual Weapon on whichever is further and retreating to a charge position if I can (concentration for casting while double moving auto-succeeds) while drawing my lance. If they do look like casters or humanoids, hit one with Silence or Hold Person (respectively) instead and still retreat/draw. And we can go from there I think. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-16-06, 12:00 PM | I am good with play by playing it as long as we have time, but I wanted tactics to finish with if I had to cut you out of the loop and jsut get it done. I do not want to run as late as I did last week. It resulted in me not having Zwei up this week. Ceilia comes around a corner into line of sight with the outpost and finds it to be small wonder that the locals are so in favor of WAR these days. Feeling that her Goddess is with her, she sees this (only one if we are play by playing it as they are not both LOS for her): http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM35_gallery/MM35_PG15.jpg Only its head and antennae are visible above the ground. It seems to taste its surroundings for a moment and then disappears into the earth leaving no passage behind it. |
| Zevox12-16-06, 10:06 PM | Damn. About now I wish it wouldn't be metagaming to cast a resist energy (acid) spell.... Anyway, burrowing, damn. Screws up the spiritual weapon plan. So, go with this: Round 1: Drop hold person for Inflict Moderate Wounds, move Foresight back so we're further than 65' from where the bug was if possible. Round 2+: Ready to touch any foe that enters range with the IMW (+10 touch, 2d8+4 damage, will DC 16 half), HA Foresight to attack the creatures on sight (gets him to ready? or no effect? your call). Lets see how that goes. Remember when I get attacked to take cover with ride and use mounted combat if it attacks Foresight. Acutely aware of what has most likely just happened in spite of her unfamiliarity with this beast, Ceilia decides to prepare a surprise for the monstrous creature. She calls upon a blessing of the Goddess she has not before used, giving up one of the spells she had prayed for that morning in exchange for one which would cause scalding harm to a foe. Her palm glows holy red with the power she has conjured, and she kicks Foresight back a short distance, hoping to see this creature coming and deliver her surprise before it can strike her or her horse. |

| MitzaVolchenko12-17-06, 03:38 PM | I need to know how you want to proceed. |
| Zevox12-17-06, 09:03 PM | Couple of rules notes first. The Ankheg gets a will save DC 16 to half the inflict damage. And Ceilia can use Mounted Combat to negate the hit on Foresight with a ride check (+10 vs DC 22 - just slightly less than a 50% chance of success). Anyway, quick tactics: If its attack still hits Foresight: I think Ceilia will have fallen off Foresight in this case, which is bad, but the Ankheg will be more vulnerable since its grappling. So, draw her longsword and swing until it dies - with her buffs, she'll be at +13 for 1d8+6 damage. Foresight obviously will do whatever you think an int 2 animal would in this situation - grapple back or try to escape. If Foresight lives, remount him afterwards and heal him with her wand, then move on to where she'll find the next one, and kill it with her sword and Foresight. If the attack is negated: Essentially the above, but have Foresight attack the first one while she is. This is what I'm hoping for. If Ceilia gets grabbed: Bad, very bad. Try to escape - Bull's Strength puts my grapple at +9, so its not too bad of a chance. But get the hell out of there ASAP and keep swinging with the sword. If her hp drops to 20 or less: retreat (if Foresight is alive) and heal up to 35+ with her wand. If Foresight is dead, then only do this if not grappled and only one is left. Always remember ride for cover and mounted combat please! Those are two of her bigger advantages. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-17-06, 10:20 PM | I'll add the ride check and save when I get back to this. You may actually just dismount this round assuming everything stands as is. The reason I asked for further tactics is that I need your escape grapple tactics. If it grapples you and burrows, the fight ends. |
| Zevox12-17-06, 10:25 PM | I'll add the ride check and save when I get back to this. You may actually just dismount this round assuming everything stands as is. The reason I asked for further tactics is that I need your escape grapple tactics. If it grapples you and burrows, the fight ends. If it grapples me, I doubt it'll be able to burrow. It would have to make more grapple checks as a standard action to move the grapple, and can then only go at half speed. In any event, if that happens, couldn't Ceilia always grapple for damage, then when it falls unconscious CDG it and dig herself out? I know she doesn't have a burrow speed, but that just means it'd take a while. Or she could climb up the damn hole its burrowing would leave (pain in the ass to do with that armor on, but possible). Oh, and if one does grapple Ceilia, but Foresight is still around, remember his defend trick will cause him to attack the thing. Edit: Besides, since that isn't one of an Ankheg's typical tactics, it seems kinda questionable to me as to whether it should be doing something like that to begin with, being intelligence 1 and all... |
| MitzaVolchenko12-17-06, 11:07 PM | Ankhegs are burrowing stomachs. It hunts by burrowing beneath things and grappling them. By presumption, its preference wlould be to return below ground and eat its meal (in this case Ceilia or Foresight). |
| Zevox12-17-06, 11:17 PM | The monster description says they burrow up to attack, but says nothing about dragging down foes that aren't dead yet. I agree they'd return to their burrows to eat, but with a still-struggling target? When its not in the monster description, that just seems to be improv to make them deadlier to me (no offense, just does), and they're already a pain with Improved Grab and that acid spit in their arsenal. It also seems to me personally that'd make them more lethal to PCs than they really should be at that CR (what level 3 is going to be anything but an easy grapple target for one of those?). |
| MitzaVolchenko12-18-06, 12:13 AM | Improved Grab (Ex) To use this ability, an ankheg must hit with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If the ankheg is damaged after grabbing its prey, it retreats backward down its tunnel at its land speed (not its burrow speed), dragging the victim with it. |
| Zevox12-18-06, 12:32 AM | Well, that sucks. Better hope that mounted combat saves Foresight, or Ceilia's AC of 24 is enough to hold off those +7 attacks then. With burrow I can't do this ranged, and with my spells all I can do now is one of my 1st-levels or convert to ILW, which isn't worth losing a sword stroke over. Melee and hope the dice don't turn on me now it is then (Ceilia has a history of being blessed by those things; hopefully that won't turn around when theres more at stake than just some xp/gp rewards for her). |

Once the monsters are dead, I am going to make the call that the locals will help dig out the valiant horse before he suffocates. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-20-06, 03:50 AM | As Ceilia frantically digs after her horse, slowly people emerge from nearby buildings and slower than molasses in winter, they come to assist her in digging Foresight out. Slowly a cheer spreads through the gathering crowd. Ceilia barely hears it at first. Then when Foresight staggers out of the pit covered in the remains of the second Ankheg, she realizes that they have done it. Biggest saving grace for her is that Ankhegs share territory but do not work cooperatively, nor do they use their acid spit as a first option. Additionally Foresight got very lucky at his crucial times. I will get rewards up ASAP. I apologize for running this late. The week has been hectic IRL for me. I believe that I made soem very minor errors in the fight, but I don't think there was anything result effecting. Scanit for errors and let me know if I need to correct it. |
| Zevox12-20-06, 03:11 PM | Whispering a prayer of thanks to the Grandmaster, Ceilia brushes some of the dirt off of Foresight and pushes the creature's remains aside. Remounting her trusty steed after a moment she smiles at the people of the city who had helped her and offers her heartfelt thanks for their assistance - Foresight is an old friend of hers, and she would have hated to lose him. "Now, for the building these monsters were protecting," she says grimly, trotting her horse up to the celestials' structure. Drawing her lance, she lines up with the doorway, then kicks Foresight into a charge. They smash through the wooden door, leaving it in splinters behind them, to the cheers of the people who had stuck around. It does not take long to find a torch, some stashes of lantern oil, and an appropriate section of the structure to begin in, and soon a vibrant blaze has erupted. It isn't long before Ceilia is outside the place once again, a few bags of gold and choice items she had found added to her belt, and the structure is blazing brightly. "If anything is left of that, it won't be usable by our enemies without a lot of repairs," she says simply, partly to herself, partly to Foresight, mostly to the handful of WAR sympathizers still hanging around. A person of fewer words than most, Ceilia simply watches the blaze otherwise in silence before thanking the people one last time and riding off to return to WAR. Thanks a lot for running the MQ, even though it was more battle than RP :) . I replied to your PM about the rewards, so shouldn't be a problem there. Just one last note, this was an out-of-cycle miniquest, so theres no need to tally what spells she used (important since shes crafting this coming week as a full action and couldn't if this were in-cycle). |
