If you do not feel that you can run this character accounting for her Intelligence and Wisdom score which are above average, do not even start running the fight. Trade it to someone else, please. I would offer, but I can't run my own fights.
Unless directly countermanded in sent tactics all of the following should be used.
Always avoid charging lines. Keep cover, distance, or obstacles between her and any attacking forces.
Always use hide and stealth when possible.
Always avoid AoO's. Tumble allows this.
Always use bard song if in the open and available. It takes a standard to start it and then continues until a spell has to be cast with verbal components. It lasts for several rounds after singing ceases.
If Gleason is present, use him for flanking bonuses.
If ranged combat is available use it. If terrain is interfering with the ability to get longer stretches clear, move to another portion of the map.
If there is good line of sight, rapid shot.
If grappled, escape artist to get out of it.
If casting unavoidably in melee, cast on the defensive.
If moving and run up allows, jump obstacles.
Use anything on the character sheet for expendables.
Do not drop equipment unless it is destroyed.
NEVER SURRENDER.

In the light of the early morning sun, a bleary eyed bard exited from a local tavern. She had been up most of the night singing, but that was no different that most nights. What was different was needing to be awake for the aid of the Warfare Alliance. WAR needed some new friends and the people of Kelartus seemed like just the sort of people who would like to be friends. The bard's job was just to make sure they figured that part out.

Sorry about not setting this up earlier as I didn't even see it in pairings post.

No problem. I actually have been flat on my back a good portion of the weekend and my back was bad enough yesterday that I didn't move from a prone position except to go to the bathroom. I am working to clear my fight load right now ad am fine with this just holding a week.
TelinArtho

Well, we'll have to try to pick up some of the slack this week in the next two weeks. In case you haven't heard, I am expecting my third child to be born on March 14th - all of 22 days from now and as such am taking a break from the CoCo right around that time. I would like to have this finished up as soon as I can in case he comes early or another emergency pulls me away.

Sybil stops at a public fountain and splashes a bit of water on her face. She stretches and sets her hat at a jaunty angle and feeling much fresher, heads into the district observing as she goes. The key to making friends on this level was knowing what they needed.

I haven't a clue what Kelartus looks lie as a district, who lives there, etc.
TelinArtho

02-26-07, 10:27 AM
Not far from the fountain, Sybil can hear the sounds of an altercation. Although out of sight from her, there are clearly multiple gruff voices and the sounds of canines. Beyond that - she isn't sure.

You are 20ft from the entrance to an alleyway, where the sound seems to be coming from. The alley is about 10ft wide. You would guess the sounds are about 100ft away, but it is difficult to tell with the way sound travels.
MitzaVolchenko

02-26-07, 04:08 PM
Sybil frowns and tries to remember what she has read and heard about the local politics (bardic knowledge)of this district as she strolls casually toward the sound of the altercation. She quietly slips the wand of mirror image into her hand fiddling with it as if it is just a simple baton.

What little she knows about the area is mostly centered around the figurehead Lord Devon of the region. Although politically, he holds little power, his views are oftentimes well respected among the people in the area. Perhaps with his voice lending approval to WAR, WAR's stature in the area could improve.

Moving to the corner of the building that forms one side of the alleyway, Sybil glances down, trying to remain inconspicuous. Down the alley, she sees that it empties out on to another street - and on that street is a pair of gnolls with a pair of hyenas. They seem to be ushering prisoners down the street - but beyond that she is not sure of their intent. Just then though, one of them laughs heartily as one of the hyenas tears a portion of flesh from one of the prisoners' legs.

The scene is about 60ft away and in a short moment, the group will be beyond Sybil's sight.

Sorry about not fleshing this out too much - just don't have much time right now and I'm trying to finish up the encounter with Asran and Indivara.

Write as much tactic as you can. The gnolls are well equipped with bows, an axe, a heavy shield and chain shirt armor. One of the gnolls has his bow in hand, while the other has his shield equipped and his battleaxe in hand.
MitzaVolchenko

02-27-07, 03:29 AM
A short moment is not really a time description of any worth in tactical writing. Are we saying I need to get their attention or lose them? Are there bystanders? Cover? Is Lord Devon known to have sway because of fear or because he is a fair man? Not getting much feel for this.
Do I have one round? two? am I going to get hit by the guards when prisoners turn out to be legitimate criminals of some horrible standing?
Start with a nice non-lethal sleep on the gnolls, assuming I have a full round action. The hyenas are dumb as a box of hammers and should require handling to cause them to attack as the defend trick should not recognize their handlers falling asleep as an attack.
Follow with mirror image, moving forward and drawing bow as she goes.
I prefer to stow the wand as a move equivalent, but it really depends on what unfolds from this.
Other possible actions are really too dependent on the clarifications.
TelinArtho

02-27-07, 10:23 AM
Well in game terms, when your opponent is unaware of you, you get a surprise round to act (ie a standard action). If you want to remain hidden, you can do so, but after that surprise round, you are not going to have LOS to them.

In other words - if you want to cast sleep, you are likely going to need to move down the alleyway.

As to Lord Devon, unfortunately, your Bardic Knowledge was not too good - so you don't have much to work with.

I know you are probably frustrated that I can't set this out completely but bear in mind that a) we're already a week behind and b) that I NEED to be done with this by next week because of my planned absence.

If you don't respond shortly, I will have you move down the alley way and then cast sleep and proceed as planned from there.
MitzaVolchenko

02-27-07, 04:14 PM
I understand your time constraints...please also understand that you aren't providing a map, nor really any details whatsoever. I am in essence giving you sketchy tactics and waiting on you to do what you usually do with tactics that rest on intent rather that word count, which is to say run a loss.
Follow them and go with seep. I am presuming that for some reason the streets are going to remain deserted. Take the gnolls hopefully both with seep, then swap to mirror image and archery for the hyenas. I ought to be able to set this up to have at least one round to put arrows into the puppies before they get to me. Refresh mirror image as needed. Rapid shot and take cover as applicable. Sybil is usually a sniper, but there is no way I can write sniping tactics with what I have to work from. You should know after the number of fights of hers you have run what her general tactics are. If she doesn't get the gnolls with sleep tap force screen, take cover and continue with above.
TelinArtho

02-27-07, 04:24 PM
Okay there's an issue:

Sleep isn't on your current spell list. Looking back on your previous fight, sleep was there. At Bard 5, you are allowed to switch out one spell for another - but only for spells that are two levels lower than your current highest level spell (so at Bard 5, you can switch out 1 Level 0 spell).

So the switch you made wasn't valid. Which spell of your level 1 spells would you like to re-replace with sleep? Once you give me an answer, I will run it accordingly.

And do me a favor and keep the "flavored" comments out of here. It is inappropriate and I have asked you multiple times to hold your tongue. If you feel that strongly - PM Cat and get a different questlord.

For the record, the violation is posted here

Drop Grease, restore sleep. I will fix the violation when this is cleared. I cannot edit the charater sheet until this concludes.

As to commentary, I will drop it if you will.

Now for tactics:

Which direction are they heading? I am going to guess into the map.
If I count the distance correctly we have 75' not 60'.
Start with mirror image and move into the alley. If they aren't attacking random people it will be a round or two before I can effectively do anything but pull a moron and bring them down on me as a group by shooting one of them.
A round or two of movement should bring me to the road that they are actually travelling on, with mirror image active. Draw bow in movement.
Start to sing something inspiring and loud about the free of spirit rising up to throw off the chains of oppression.
Once I have line of effect that isn't going to be instantly broken, sleep the gnolls. I prefer to sleep the higher AC's and contend with the lower AC's.
Tap Force Screen when/if this moves toward melee.
Once clear LOS is established rapid shot from corner/cover. Target is somewhat contingent upon who sleeps and who doesn't. If the gnolls go down as planned, and the hyenas react in such a way as INT 2's with no overtly offensive action taken, rapid shot them.
All expendables are available.
CDG's should be performed with the ugliest weapon present.
TelinArtho

02-27-07, 05:59 PM
Safe behind the wall of the building she is next to, Sybil uses her wand and produces multiple images of herself. [4 images]

The gnolls disappear from her sight, heading eastward along the road. Sybil moves down the alleyway and stops at the corner (04,13) where she sees they have not moved much farther down the road and have stopped in front of the door of the building at (10,08). Fully able to see the situation, there are four people in their captivity, 2 gnolls and 2 hyenas.

The building is not marked - but does not appear to be a residence. Whatever business it deals in is a mystery.

Okay - so do you want to sing first or sleep first? Both fit in here in your tactics.
MitzaVolchenko

02-27-07, 06:30 PM
Did you double move to get there? I allowed for a couple of rounds of movement and eq change in there since she moves 30' that is two rounds in the alley with one using standard as move to put away wand, one using standard to start song, bow drawn as free during movement.
TelinArtho

02-28-07, 11:45 AM
Round 1 - move, putting away wand while moving. Move, drawing bow while moving. Round 2 - start to sing (standard) - leaves you with a move action - you are at the location I marked above.
MitzaVolchenko

02-28-07, 02:35 PM
Cast sleep. If they are moving into the building before she can complete sleep, abort: drop MI and go gathering information about the building and who lives there, what it is used for, etc. Examine all of its possible entrances, its facings, its neighbors, find out what really goes on there. Scout it out and redraw a plan. I really don't know what you are looking for here and have next to know 'feel' for the type of neighborhood, who is about, what the building is likely to be used for, why everyone is off the street, where the guard is that 4 people can be dragged with hyenas and gnolls down the street, etc etc etc.
I promise that I am not trying to be difficult, but Sybil is not a tank fighter. Yes, I have employed charge merrily into overwhelming odds tactics before...generally because there was little or no hope of much more than a not last place finish.
If I thought you would allow it, I would have already done what I would do in a normal game setting which is get their attention with expeditious up and keep taunting/stinging them while leading them smack into the town watch. I would then take my chances that a citizen with a decent reputation and the member of a prominent guild would get a fair shake with the guard captain...and if all else fails, seduce the captain into seeing things my way. However, I have never seen CoCo allow for any resolution that did not involve the PC fighting it out with the bad guy personally.
TelinArtho

At the sound of Sybil's singing, the gnolls shift their attention away from the doorway. One mutters something in their language and points. He brings up his bow and fires a shot at Sybil. The arrow embeds itself into the building.

The other moves to (4,8), followed closely by the two hyenas (5,8) and (5,9).

Sybil starts to cast sleep.

The archer takes another shot at Sybil, but the arrow is wide and high.

The axe-wielder barks something and both hyenas spring forward. They each bite at Sybil, but they seem almost timid.

Sybil finishes casting sleep. [Where do you want to target it?]

Darn it, they spread out. Take the two hyenas. Then focus on the axe man, stepping back to avoid LOS from the archer. Standard this round Tap Force Screen, Move=step back to lose LOS with the archer. 5' step should suffice. I'll need to know who gets affected, but I can't afford the possible trip attacks with the axe man up, and I can't reliably avoid flanking with the two hyenas up.
TelinArtho

Sybil finishes her spell and is dismayed when only one of the two hyenas fall asleep.

Okay - your full action, 5ft step and what else?

Huh? Tap Force Screen, step out of LOS.

Sybil steps back and taps a protective tattoo on her shoulder. The power of the tattoo flourishes around her just in time as the gnoll with the axe strides up to her, swinging freely. Sybil nimbly avoids the attack, and jumps away from the hyena - who bites at her as well.

Sybil hears the archer moving, but apparently not towards her quite yet.

What is our initiative order? Which hyena is asleep? How much damage did the bite do? What is the directional on the listen? Moving around the other side of the building or along the building?
TelinArtho

03-01-07, 12:14 PM
[Initiative order is Sybil, Gnoll with Axe, Gnoll with Bow, Hyena 1, Hyena 2]

Gnoll with bow is moving up along the pathway around x coordinate 11, though your listen wasn't good enough to know where along that pathway he is.

Hyena 2 is asleep (the one that didn't move up and attack you).

Hyena 1's attack missed.

Sybil stepped away from the assaulting force, firing off two arrows that bounced harmlessly off of the gnoll's shield. The gnoll replied in kind with a step forward and a terrible swing of his axe. With luck on her side, Sybil is pleased to see the gnoll targetted one of her images.

Behind her, she heard and saw the other gnoll approach the corner of the building. His bow is still in hand.

Round summaries with numbers please. I am also curious as to what the heck that gnoll is carrying that he has a +7 to hit. The twenty hits either way, but that is no standard gnoll. Withdraw. Cast Expeditious. Turn this into a running archery show. Mirror Image apparently is not as useful as I thought.
TelinArtho

03-01-07, 12:44 PM
Crap - I forgot about the Mirror Image - one sec.

Also - I realized I had 1 point too much damage on that roll.

And I never said they were "standard" gnolls. I actually inferred that they weren't when I said that they were well equipped...

EDIT - sorry about the confusion. The gnoll's unconfirmed crit properly slays one of your images and the hyena's attack in round 4 also removed one image - leaving you with 2 more.

We are starting round 6. Do you want to change your actions since the attack had missed?
MitzaVolchenko

Gnolls standardly carry equipment. Equipment that is outside of their normal treasure allowance, I might object to. Did you roll the hyena number as well? On a 2d2-2 they might not belong there at all as 2 is the max roll. I didn't see a private roll for that either. I have only just started watching the rolls to indicate whether it is dice or high AC's that result in misses.

The equipment they have is based on their CR and their treasure allowance. I can assure you that the equipment they have falls within their limits.

As to the encounter being rolled, I have always used the "correct" CR for encounters - because it isn't fair for an EL5 quest to be bogged down with an unlucky EL7 encounter or to be made a laughing stock with a lucky EL3 encounter. I roll on the table and take the value that will give me the appropriate EL of the quest. I have always done this since the monster tables have been introduced and I will continue doing this. I should note that the monster tables are no longer supposed to have random numbers at all - the few that remain are oversights on the behalf of Cat.

[See my edited comment above for the encounter]

Sybil stepped back again and fired at the axe-wielding gnoll, but simply could not penetrate his armor. The axe wielder stepped forward, but likewise could not find purchase when attacking Sybil.

The archer at her back took a well aimed shot, but merely made another image dissipate. The archer then moved towards Sybil whilst drawing his own axe (and keeping the bow in hand as well).

The hyena stepped forward and took a bite at Sybil, but again could not find her.

You chose to give me the max encounter instead of the random variable that I am supposed to receive. I object to that. The random charts have not been removed. That they are 'supposed to' is right along the lines of every other 'supposed to' argument that has come down the pike. 5' step. Expeditious. Withdraw. Running archery battle. Please add the appropriate roll as provided by the CoCo rules chart and adjust the encounter accordingly if it comes up with fewer foes. All items are available for use. Heal as needed.

Here's the post where Cat says he was taking out the numbers in the monster rolls. And to be clear - I did not give you the maximum - the entry is 2d2-1, not 2d2-2. You can object if you like - but it still isn't going to change. If you have complaints about this further - go ahead and bring in another elder or Cat.

Sybil steps away again and casts another spell - quickening her steps. The gnolls and hyena are relentless in their attacks however. Fortune smiles on Sybil though - as all their attacks are without purchase.

As Sybil withdraws away from the gnolls, the bow and axe wielder takes a passing swipe at her - but the attack does nothing more than take down her last image.

Looking behind her briefly, she catches sight of the archer again, just as he draws back his bowstring and fires an arrow. Despite the look back, she's unable to dodge to the side and it slams into her back with the force of a ballista. She doesn't see the other gnoll or the hyena at the moment.

I just had you withdraw down the street rather than turn a corner, so that you would have a better view on what was following you and how far. If you would prefer to duck behind a building, that's fine - but you just won't be able to get as far away.

Also - I am using the map as a wrap around, so you ran westward on the map from (04,17) to (01,25) and around to (12,25) [effectively (-13,25) on the map].

No tactical change. I am not following rolls any longer nor am I any good at figuring out wrap around maps. Refresh MI, get distance, running archery fight. Single shots from range. Take advantage of corners for cover. Heal as needed. Just finish it up however you choose. I don't have any more time at the moment. Targets go with bow gnoll first, then hyena then other gnoll. I will try to check back in half an hour or so.

Sybil moves farther away, drawing her wand along the way and ducks behind a corner. Using the wand, she duplicates again. [4 images again]

Looking back, she sees that the gnoll has followed her, and while he fires another arrow at her, it clatters harmlessly off of the wall she hides behind. There's still no sign of the other gnoll or hyenas.

Sybil moves around to the next corner while putting away her wand and then fires an arrow at the gnoll. This one flies true. The gnoll however does not pursue her further and instead stops at the corner he is nearest to.

Sybil has no further knowledge of the other opponents.

I do not have time to keep round by rounding this today. If she has LOS to a target use it. If she doesn't, gain it. Follow previous tactics. Loop back toward the other hyena and the slaves if that is what I have as an option.

You can still fire at the gnoll where he is - 120ft (-4) away and with cover.

Sybil fires off another arrow at the gnoll, but this time it also clatters off of the building near him. He does not fire another arrow.

Meanwhile, the other gnoll appears at the north end of the building and fires an arrow at Sybil [60ft away] and disperses one of her images. The hyenas are not far behind and turn the corner, barking.

Lastly the other gnoll pops out from the corner and heads towards Sybil, arrow and bow at the ready.

So the axe-wielding gnoll has disarmed his shield, stowed it, stowed his axe and drawn his bow. The archer gnoll delayed for everyone to go and moved after he heard the barking of the hyenas.

Sybil moved away from the hyenas, dodging their bites (though one does disperse an image) and moves away. Once she is clear from the building, the gnoll that is farther away takes a shot at her and disperses another image.

Turning behind a corner, she whips around and fires off an arrow at the gnoll, and it hits him squarely. She sees the other gnoll move to the end of the other building and into the middle of the road.

Shortly, the two hyenas are upon her. One of them even takes a bite at her, but misses completely.

How with 60-240' of possible movement am I based by 50' move creatures? For tactical clarification, she is smarter than they are. She is not walking into one of your readied improved ambushes. She is not going to allow them to stand toe up with her and shoot at her while hyenas chew on her. I also can't follow your descriptions of where who has gone to save my life making it impossible to tell where we are in what round or which direction anyone has headed. For the next fights assuming I am able to win this one which seems doubtful, would you mind using the mapping tool where obstacles and directions are clear?
TelinArtho

03-02-07, 09:40 AM
Since you said you wanted to take advantage of corners, that means you are limited to single or double moves. The option was to either take a double move away, in which case the 50ft move hyenas would not be able to catch up, but at the same time, you are not giving any offense. Outrunning your opponents is not a successful condition of the miniquest - defeating them is. Your opponents have better ranged capability, despite lower to hit bonuses (110ft range increment vs your 60ft range increment) - so even putting distance is not really to your advantage. The readied action was simply a tactical plan the archer had - he knew the hyenas would flush you out of cover - so he simply waited for it. And if you hadn't come out - he was satisfied with the hyenas eating you.

I would use the mapping tool when it is an option. For this kind of situaiton, even the city map is below par for the encounter. However, if you want future encounters on one of the pre-existing maps, I suppose I can accomodate that.

I don't understand what the issue is when I provide a map for you that has everything you should need (and if it is missing something, then let me know what you need). I provide the direction that you have traveled (westward) and given that your foes have been following you - you can safely assume they are heading westward as well...

Call it a defficiency in me, but I can't follow those maps. I can't read them, I can't write them. You will note that when I am using a large area map in one of my quests that is not a simple defined area, I draw a pictorial map in DC and post it or set up on the planes with extras drawn in.
I do not see the tactical advantage of being eaten by hyenas. Using adoube move, puts her anywhere she likes ie out of LOS from the gnolls. Doing it a few times with the hyenas following puts the gnolls out distanced and out of thefight. Killing the hyenas without their heavier hitting friends becomes viable. Doing it by doublemoving or even running ahead of them and then turning a corner that is not toward the gnolls means that they cannot charge, merely follow me and take the arrow. Then rinse repeat. They are not by any stretch of the imagination smart enough to not walk into an ambush. In effect you seem to have decided that the district is 3 blocks wide and anything outside of those three blocks is out of bounds. Fine, define that from the start.
Tell me, did the slaves run when they went unatteded and were affected by my inspire courage? Have they made it to a guard station yet, or are they just cowering in the street waiting on their masters? There are lots of ways to win an encounter in my world. My ideal victory condition here would be lead the gnolls and hyenas on a merry chase into a guard ambush then use Sybil's considerable social skills to convince them that the gnolls are taking slaves. On quests and missions the whole character sheet should be considered and useful. Sybil is built as a normal character. She has the variety of skills and stats to actually make it in a normal game.
Now that my pontification is done. Do whatever you like with the tactics. 5' step and rapid shot if you won't allow me to simply walk away from the hyenas. Heal as necessary refresh MI as necessary.

So tell me, what can I do to appease you? You said you couldn't get your mind around the wrap around maps, so I started posting more of the map so you could see it more easily. I said I would increase the map's dimensions as needed in order to accomodate your speed. And now you say that I have limited it to 3 blocks wide?

I'll edit the above situation so that you move further away instead of taking the shot. As to bringing in the city guard - that wouldn't be enough for the quest to be allowed as a resolution. If all missions could be resolved as "stumble into the city guard" - then you might as well use a EL10 encounter and have them follow you.

As for the slaves, you have whole-sale ignored them from the beginning. If you want to find out what happened to them - you'll have to go back and look for yourself...

I'll post again once I have edited the above post to take care of the extra movement.

Don't bother bending over backwards or inconveniencing yourself further. You clearly do not agree that there is any point in being able to do anything but deal and take damage. My first inclination initially was actually to sing for Fascination and just wave the slaves off while the gnolls stared at me. Not valid in CoCo because apparently everything in Gladius is a combat situation. You realize that there aren't actually that many characters in CoCo that could talk a guard contingent into agreeing with them and arresting the gnolls, right? It doesn't matter. Finish this up however you like. You understand how Sybil operates. You have my permission to use anything you like, and you need to knock this mission out so that you can move on to very much more important real world focuses. I am fine with that. Do not have your feelings hurt if I avoid ever having anything run by you if at all humanly possible. We clearly do not mesh in our views of what a quest should be. This is not a fault, just a fact.
I do not agree that standing toe to toe with the hyenas is even a little bit smart. 5' step and rapid shot them. I am fairly certain that within two rounds they will kill Sybil and this will be concluded.

Sybil withdraws from the hyenas and moves further down the road. Once she is clear from the building, the gnoll that is farther away takes a shot at her and disperses an image. She ducks behind another building in order to stay away from the hyenas.

She hears one of the gnolls bark some orders, and both hyenas back off instead of following her. The only gnoll she can see moves down the nearest alleyway.

Do what you wish. I am not going to continue trying to second guess you nor am I going to continue debating our differences in this forum. You have my tactics and priorities. Use them. Feel free to use anything you wish on the character sheet as needed.

Would you like me to see if I canfind another Questlord for this?
TelinArtho

If you can find a questlord for this - that would be a great help. My time is becoming more and more limited. In any case, I still intend on finishing this fight at the least - but things just keep coming up (as in my wife needing to go to 3 doctor appointments this morning...)

[Round 13]

Sybil moves to (4,13), drawing her wand of Cure Light Wounds. At the corner, she is able to see one of the gnolls and the two hyenas - they seem to be returning to the place of the slaves. Although the distance is great - she can see that the slaves are no longer there - though whether they were ushered into the building or escaped is an unknown to her.

She uses her wand and feels a little better.

[Round 14]

[Force Screen ends]

Sybil touches her side with the wand, closing up the last of the wounds and then moves along the wall, clearly noticed by the gnoll, and then ducks once again behind the next building.

The gnoll continues to move along, and allows the hyenas to pass him as they are getting closer to the building.

[Round 15]

Sybil puts away her wand and takes a shot at the gnoll. The shot is wide however, and only serves to draw an arrow from the gnoll in return, but it misses as well.

The other gnoll shows himself and takes a shot at Sybil but it just slams into the wall beside her.

The hyenas seem to be fighting their training, but continue towards the building as instructed by the gnolls.

[Round 16]

With a clear shot at the other gnoll, and the fact that this one is wounded, Sybil switches targets and fires an arrow at him. This one hits, but is little more than a glancing wound. She then relocates to a position further away in case the gnolls intend on pursuing her again.

The gnolls fire a pair of arrows at Sybil, knocking out another image.

At this point I realized that I had used the wrong distance modifier for Sybil up until now. It should be -2 versus the wounded one (115ft), but versus the second gnoll, it should be -4 (155ft). None of the rolls up until this point would have changed because of this luckily.

When this is done, I would like to see the sheets on those gnolls. If you would like to hand off to a different QL to finish it, I will endeavor to find someone to take it over.
Of curiosity, what are the every round d6's for Sybil?
TelinArtho

03-06-07, 10:02 AM
The 1d6 after your attack rolls are merely your damage should you score a hit. I often tie them together because it is easier for me to batch dice that are related together and it speeds things up - especially in an extended shoot out (such as this).

I will certainly finish this encounter at the least - bear in mind that you are down to about 30 arrows - so you might want to consider tactics for when you run out of arrows, but we'll see if that's needed.

Where are we at for expendables used? Switch to wand use, starting with MM. If MM gets cantankerous, SMI. Refresh MI as needed. Thanks TM for pointing out to the blonde that hte map scrolls sideways.

Brandishing her wand as another gnoll arrow crashes into the wall next to her, Sybil points it at her opponent and a golden arrow streaks out to hit his chest. He let's loose one more arrow, but collapses from the effort.

Sybil sends the two hyenas scurrying away with a missile at each one.

3 charges from wand of Magic Missile.

Congratulations, you finished your first encounter. Good luck on the rest of it. I'll finish up the opening questlog with the updated used resources.

As an aside - you are allowed to edit your sheet to take into account the violation on the spell exchange. Once you fix it - send me a PM and I'll close out the violation so there's no delay on getting out of prison.

No problem. Since your character sheet here is still posted, making changes on the active one in the characters thread is not an issue.

I'll make a note about the sleep spell issue in the questlog, so the next questlord is aware of it.

As Sybil searchs the bodys of the Gnolls, she finds on the biggest Gnoll a crude map! Looking at the map it looks to leading to a small hill in the Plains just outside of Kelartus, On the map there is crude picture of ants??

Sybil approaches the Slaves who Look Very scared, as she approaches a young man steps out from the group and starts Stammering "Thank you M'Lady for saving us from the Gnolls, I am Jeric, and these are my Sisters, we were just simple travelers and the gnolls caught as we slept, they seperated us from the others, But i overheard them talking as they got drunk, about where the others were taken, to feed the Farm, Please M'lady I beg you to go to thier farm and free My Love, I fear for her and the children"
MitzaVolchenko

03-08-07, 07:01 AM
"Slow down, sonny boy. Farm?" Sybil mentally grits her teeth. How in the names of all the gods did she end up on a trek...simple Gwar said...go make friends. Sybil knew she was good at making friends...a few songs of with appropriately propaganda riddled choruses and she would be back in her bed at the guildhall.

"Come with me, and I'll see what I can do for you. We need to get you off the streets. There is a dingy but cheap tavern not far from here, and after bringing them good custom last night, they'd best be willing to put up a few unfortunates for me."

Sybil leads them back to the tavern she was singing in the night previous.

"Give me hand shoving these gnolls into the midden, first." Sybil uses the tone her mother always used to command obedience.
Rauul

03-08-07, 07:12 AM
After being freed and the gnolls moved from the middle of the street, as Sybil is taking the former slave to the Inn, Jeric speaks to her a little more calmly "M'lady, please make haste to free M'love, she is the great grand niece of Lord Devon, if he was to find out that she was missing and captured he will never allow me to marry her!"

As you approach the Inn he saids "I will wait here with the others, and await your return with Maiden Devon, or news of her. No I can not fear the worse, as I have faith that you can find her and bring her safely back to me and her grand uncle, who needs not know of her being abducted while in my care"
MitzaVolchenko

03-08-07, 07:26 AM
"Very well. See that bite tended to," Sybil nods toward the girl with the hyena bite and wishes the young idiot to some perfectly horrendous demise. She didn't buy his story for a second...and whose children was she heading out to help? "Maiden" hardly seemed likely. Oh well, at least the gnoll slavers were disposed of, and if she got drunk enough maybe she could craft a decent song from all of this.
If the gods were really smiling, she would retrun to find out that the boy wasn't lying. Though from what she had seen of the district so far, Lord Devon wasn't much of a Lord and was likely in the council's pay.

Trying to find an upside to this mess, Sybil waves to the barkeep and heads out of the tavern, down the street, through the district, and out the city gate whistling all the way.
Safe to assume a refresh of her quiver from the unused arrows?
Rauul

03-08-07, 09:51 PM
yes, very safe to assume you got enough arrows back off 2 gnoll archers.. unless you needed more than 72

As Sybil approachs the plains she notices the mound if dirt and 3 very large ants around it, and on the side of the mound is a small pen with what looks like 4 females and 2 children in it.

Close in a bit bow in hand, mirror image from wand & stow it, expeditious retreat, draw wand of MM keeping bow in other hand. Try wand of MM first, moving to keep out of melee with them. If wand gets cantankerous, bow, no rapid shooting as we prefer to keep range and those penalties stack up fast. Keep an eye out for hyenas and other gnolls.

Sybil takes a moment to catch her breath and cautiously approaches the slave pen. She scans the plains and watches the top of the mound for signs of ants, gnolls, or the missing hyenas.
The question haunted her...who was controlling the ants and making deals with gnolls. Obvioulsy it was possible that the gnolls were dumb enough to think some giant bugs were divine, so it could be some sort of worship. The savy those gnolls showed fighting her tended to make her doubt that theory. Presumably they weren't even the ones in charge...
"Jerk...err Jeric sent me to retrieve you nice foks. Is one of you Miss Devon?"
Rauul

03-09-07, 12:30 AM
As Sybil approaches the slaves she notices that there are bones around the pen, both human, ant and gnoll, she notices that during the fight the hole to the ant hill had closed up.

One of the older ladies step forward "Thank you for saving us!"
She continues "I don't know where the Giant took Miss Devon I do know it was headed to the City, It was a Giant of a man, yet it moved with grace for a person that size, it came and knew exactly who it was that it was looking for "

Catching her breathe she continues "The one Gnoll that it killed, tried to stop it, but was killed with but 1 punch from it's huge hands!" as she points to the body of a dead Gnoll by the fence.
MitzaVolchenko

03-09-07, 12:45 AM
Sybil starts swearing in draconic. When the ladies blanch, she breaks off and forces a smile.

"Okay, lets get moving. Either way we do not want to behere when the dinner crew arrives to get the queen her dinner," she tries to be reassuring, but something is nagging at her memory at the descroption of the new pet.

Nightmares...a possible future...a past that never came to be...

Sybil rarely wished for her father's company, but today was one of those days when she couldhave put up with his know it all patronization as well as his extensive knowledge and experience.

Shaking herself out of her thoughts, Sybil opens the pen and starts herding her new charges back toward the city. She puts away her bow and draws the wands of magic missile and mirror image, then starts to sing an old work song that she had learned as a child while escaping the bower to help the peasants with the harvest {bardic music, inspire courage}.

Nightfall would be on them soon, and she wanted to be in the city walls before then.
Rauul

03-09-07, 01:02 AM
As they were moving back to town as the sun was going down, a little girl breaks away from the older lady and runs up to Sybil and talks to her.

She saids "Your going to save mommy by killing the Giant that took her, like you killed the icky ants!" She hands Sybil a little scrap of paper, then runs back to the older woman..

As Sybil looks down at the wadded up paper she notices it's a Partial map to a small district of Kelartus where the not so popular creatures live.. Known to be where the Arena masters capture some of the monsters for the fights.. very nasty section of town, she notices a small picture in of something over center of the Square. Sort of like the drawing of the ants on the other crumpled piece of paper..
MitzaVolchenko

03-09-07, 01:25 AM
Sybil's tiny dose of maternal instinct wars with her desire to run screaming to a brightly lit tavern full of dwarves and ale and perhaps a hot bath.

Not wanting to face Jeric, she leads the women and children to the tavern and leaves them at the door. She is not in the mood for more questions or any more stupidity from that whelp just yet. With more work to do, she can't just join him for a drink or thirty in her case and let him rant while she heads for drunken numbness.

Still singing she points them inside and turns on her heel following the crude map.

Cast expeditious, new set of mirror images, stow mirror image wand, hold MM wand, tap force screen advance readying to cast blindness at whatever presents itself.
Rauul

03-09-07, 02:13 AM
Arriving to the run down section of the city, Sybil noticed that this seems to be a Cleaner section that what she remembers Almost as if a group has come through and cleaned it, as she heads towards the building she notices a large half giant, dressed in what could be described as a toga or Robes, very light on his feet for one his size and carrying a bound and Squirming woman, as if she was a sack of potatos, the one things she notices is that the woman looks like an older version of the girl that gave her the map..

Go ahead and try blinding it. Then use expeditious/MM on it. Unless it seems blind in which case go for bow and gun it down. Keep moving the heck away from it, we do not grapple with half-giants.

As long as the wand of MM is cooperating draw MI again and keep it handy for refresh. Use SMI wand as back up and bow as last choice since it means putting away the MI wand. If using bow, rapid shot at long range, single at close range and sing for inspire courage (might as well if I'm not using my voice for anything else).

Sybil sets her hat, now shabby with abuse, at its proper angle and goes to assist the victim.

"Lay still a moment," Sybil kneels down still watching for hyenas and checks for obvious injuries. If she finds none, she will try to rouse the unconscious woman.

Knowing that a group of Half Giant monks is making their home in the area, Sybil looks toward her fallen opponent with mild trepidation...still he didn't act like a lawful being, so the chances were slim that she had just hurt WAR's chances with them.

slowing waking up from the bump on her head she looks up and smiles at Sybil.

"Thank you so much for saving me from that monster, if there is anything you have need of, please ask and if it is within my power I will gladly provide it" she Smiles as she trys to stand..

"Please can you take me to Jeric, Who ever attacked me was trying to use me against My Uncle, but didn't know about My daughter, and Jeric" the young lady saids while trying to collect herself.

Maiden, indeed Sybil thinks to herself, but she offers the woman an encouraging smile and helps her to her feet.

"My name is Sybil, and Jeric is waiting for you. I'm not sure who your uncle is, but we of the Warfare Alliance don't need favors for doing the right thing. This has been only a minor step out of my way," Sybil puts all of her charm into sounding completely sincere. What was a trek to the plains and a few arrows and sundries compared to the freedom of the enslaved? Even as she finished speaking, she knew she was sincere.

"Besides, I came here to make friends, and so I have. I may have made a few more enemies as well, but who's counting?

Sybil leads the woman back to the tavern where she left the others.

Smiling back at Sybil "My Uncle is Lord Devon, the Govenor of Kelartus" She mumbles something about he needs to get rid of the trash as she kicks the corpse of the giant" Jeric and me were going to him and tell him about his grand niece, and to Make him give my hand to Jeric now... since he has refused 2 times before, calling Jeric low born and other nasty things!"

Collecting herself as they appoach the Inn, she turns to Sybil "I thank you again and I wish you all the luck in the world... Now can i buy you a drink or Make Jeric buy us one?"

"You have my sympathies on your uncle's objections to your union with Jeric. Hopefully when faced with accepting it or disowning you, he'll choose the former. My father did, though I remain conspicuously absent from home so as not to create more of a stir than I already have. Of course my father wouldn't have refused me the marriage of my choice if only he could've gotten me to choose a marriage at all," Sybil grins then winks conspiratorily.

"As for drinks, I have to pass. I am overdue at the Alliance guildhall as it is...much longer and Gwar will send out search parties..and my dog might disown me...he's a little slave to his stomach. If your uncle disowns you, come by the Alliance, and I'll see what I can do about finding you a place."
