Come here Telveran and let me show you this... Yes - sit down right there.

Rhengarvin beckoned Telveran into the makeshift library. On a table in front of him, Telveran watched as Rhengarvin flatened a map out of a small section of Gawane. Although Telveran had been on campaign for quite a while - he was able to quickly identify mentally where this section of the district was and looked up at Rhengarvin to point out what was special about it.

This here is a part of Gawane's commercial areas. Although not many businesses conduct themselves exclusively to the district, the businesses help out the neighborhood quite well.

Sir Valkin uncovered some underlying treachery in the form of fey who were taking men as their prisoners of the mind. What support we have gotten from the people indicate that there is a sub-culture to Gawane that is not known outside of the district - or at least is well hidden from the public eye.

From what I have discovered in my historical maps - this underlying force is quite sinister - and it would benefit everyone to see it fall sooner rather than later.

Anyway - the history is fairly unimportant at this point. The Celestial Forces need you to investigate the current presence in Gawane. You should find an entry point to the area through the sewers - right around this street intersection. From there - I suspect you will have to do some searching to gain entry to a relatively secret area beyond the sewers.

Be careful - there's some indication that other-worldly beings might be involved as well.

Telveran nodded.
"I will do my best to root out this malicous influence and help make life better for the residents of Gawane."

Telveran gives a wry grin. "Otherworldly beings? I will take what precautions that I can - infernal or abyssal opponents, I am reasonably equipped to deal with. If they come from some other plane, I will have to ... improvise."

After studying the map for a moment longer, Telveran stands. I will gather my gear and depart within the hour. Telveran's familiar appears from around the corner and jumps to his shoulder as he leaves the room.

Rhengarvin hears "Yes, Rascal, we have work to do." as the paladin strides briskly away.

You have Nimblefoot listed as Prebuffed - is he coming too?

Telveran made his way through the streets of Gladius quickly, skirting around any area that might slow his progress forward. Soon, he was within the district of Gawane. Unfortunately - trouble was already brewing.

Screams up ahead and fleeing citizens told the tale quite clearly. Something up ahead was causing trouble. He could hear whatever it was thrashing on a building nearby.

The blue marker is just a placeholder so you can see the general area where the disruption is coming from. Whatever it is - it is quite big.

Telveran calls on Bahamut's blessing as he rides forward to investigate the source of the screams.

Telveran will cast bless from memory and draw his lance as he rides forward.

Yes bring Nimblefoot -- might want to do charges :) Later on Telveran might have to leave him behind once we get into the sewers.

Telveran approaches the square cautiously, calling down insight mentally and preparing himself for battle with a lance that springs to his hand.

Rounding the corner he beholds a monstrous sight that did not belong in the world of men. A misshapen giant, three times the size of a grown man with a third arm and covered in thick hides, stood about 90ft away bashing on a nearby building with two spiked clubs in its hands.

Telveran's arrival did not go unnoticed however, as the creature turned its attention to him, it smiled - something akin to a baby finding a favorite toy - an evil baby with a toy that it likes to tear apart... It reached into a bag by its side with its free 3rd hand and plopped a furry ball in front of it. The ball grew to the size and shape of a large bear within a blink of an eye.

The giant then pointed at the mounted knight and uttered something in a language he could not understand. The bear responded instantly and bounded towards Telveran - claws gleaming and ready to attack. The giant then pulled a waterskin from its belt.

Telveran rides forward towards the giant while gathering his mental powers to find a weak spot in the giant's defenses.

Does Telveran have any indication if this is an evil creature?

Doesn't look like Telveran can charge the giant this round so,
Prepare for an alpha strike next round:

Cast truestrike, move forward and line up a charge on the giant next round. Skirt the bear but don't give it AOOs
also do not waste truestrike on an AOO on the bear.

When using the true strike use divine might and full power attack w/2 hands on the lance while charging for maximum damage. If can't charge giant (he got too close) drop lance and draw greatsword and perform attack sequence using the truestrike and full powerattack and divine might.

Use ride for cover or mounted combat as necessary vs attacks from the giant or to protect Nimblefoot from the bear or giant.

Aside from it being a general menace to society - you do not have the knowledge to tell you whether it is good, neutral or evil.

Telveran pushes Nimblefoot around the reach of the bear, hoping to leave it be. Casting a spell - he levels his lance in challenge to the monstrous giant. The giant unplugged the skin in his hand and drank it down - pulling out a third spiked club in answer to the approaching knight.

To his side, the bear charges in. The massive claw bears down on him, but despite the animal's great strength it cannot breach his platinum plates. Telveran thanks Bahamut for protecting him from the wounds it would have caused.

Telveran spurred Nimblefoot to speed. The bear took another swipe at him as he left its reach, but it could not connect to harm him. Lance leveled, faith behind him, Telveran braced himself for the impact. The giant was prepared for him however, and swung a deadly club at Telveran. In mid-charge, he was unable to drop down to avoid the blow, so it hit him with full force.

Undeterred, Telveran's lance struck the giant. With Bahamut behind him, the lance dove deep into the giant's flesh, through the giant's armor without effort. It stuck there, but Telveran was not deterred.

Charge and AoO from bear misses. AoO from the giant hits for 19-3 dmg (also - wrong modifier for the single attack - should've been +17+1. Lance attack is a confirmed crit for 45+42 damage (in the roller I screwed on the confirm damage - it should be 2d8+12+16+8 rather than the 4d8+24+32+8 as marked in the roller). Nice hit.

The giant levies its clubs on Telveran unmercifully. Despite the whirlwind of attacks on him, Telveran drops to Nimblefoot's side to protect himself and dodges the worst of them.

Behind him - the bear charges in once more but again only finds the impervious armor to hit.

Telveran drops his stuck lance and draws his greatsword and continues his attack on the giant.

The giant will probably make it but doesn't it have to make a massive damage save? More than 50hp in 1 hit?

Continue attacking giant, worry about bear when giant is dead.

I have given a couple rounds worth of actions:

Telveran will drop his lance, draw greatsword, have Nimblefoot adjust closer to the giant (go to NE to try and avoid flanking) and attack (only one attack this round because no quickdraw). PA for -2/+4 ( +13+1bless-2PA=+12 and 2d6+11 damage)

Next round adjust as necessary to remove flanking and full attack with greatsword and bite. Use Divine might, no PA this round. (+14/+8 greatsword and +8 bite for damage of 2d+7+4DM and 1d6+2+4DM)

Nimblefoot can also full attack giant. If Nimblefoot doesn't seem able to damage giant for some reason, have it attack bear.

Continue using ride for cover or mounted combat as necessary.

Rascal will cheer for our side :)

Telveran lets go of the lance and in a single motion draws his greatsword to bring it down on the giant's thigh. The hit however does little to penetrate the thick skin of the giant. Nimblefoot kicks and bites but cannot find purchase either.

The hail of spiked clubs continues and Telveran is knocked ajar again from a trememdous blow to the side, which is only slightly absorbed by his armor. The bear's attacks are thwarted by Telveran's superior defenses.

Telveran continues his assault and lands two solid blows with his sword. Although the beast is not taken down by them - it is clearly weakened considerably from the effort. Nimblefoot also lands a solid hit - but the effects are clearly deadened against the giant's hide and was little more than an annoyance to the giant.

The giant's assault was unending. Amid the flurry of spiked clubs, remarkably, Telveran emerges no more harmed than previous however. The bear was still barely a distraction to Telveran.

You suffered one more hit for 19-3 damage (so 32 total damage suffered so far). You should thank Nimblefoot for giving you cover since that has negated 5 or 6 hits so far... Between you and Nimblefoot you have dealt 118 points of damage though some of that was clearly absorbed by damage reduction (the hoof and the lance strike; your sword seems to have little trouble dealing damage though).
TelinArtho

05-22-07, 01:00 PM
Telveran continues to evade the vicious blows of his attackers, whilst placing his sword into the giant whenever the opportunity presented itself. Nimblefoot helped defend his flank with hooves and bites at the bear whenever he could.

After a minute of back and forth - the giant finally falls to the ground - defeated. The impact shakes the ground around him, but Nimblefoot is able to keep standing. Moments later - the bear turns to dust as the magic controlling its existance fades.

As Telveran cleans his belongings of the beast's blood, some of the locals come out from their places of hiding - an eye always towards an escape route should the giant return to consciousness. After the initial shock of the encounter is over, the people revere his deeds.

Sorry - just wanted to keep things moving and I figured you'd be saving your further divine mights in case something else comes up next week or the week after. It never hit you after the other hits - so the measly damage you took (32) is healed between weeks. Feel free to interact with the people here. We'll continue on on Wednesday.

Athachs charge into melee combat unless their opponents are out of reach, in which case they throw rocks. They sometimes try to overrun armored opponents to reach unarmored opponents in back ranks. With its first few melee attacks, an athach tends to flail about indiscriminately. After a few rounds, it concentrates on foes that have been hitting it most often and uses its bite on whoever has dealt it the most damage.

No problem. Telveran is straightforward to run after he is done with his buffs.

After checking that Nimblefoot and Rascal did not incur any unnoticed injury in the battle, Telveran turns to aid anyone that was hurt by the giant.

Turning to the citizens of Gawane, "You are quite welcome, good folk. I am happy to have been able to keep this giant from hurting you. Tell me, does anyone remember from where this giant came or know what it wanted?"
TelinArtho

05-23-07, 03:43 PM
Most of the people in the area did not know where the giant had come from - but they were mostly still overcome with fear and shock. One did step forward from the crowd and pointed to the building it had been destroying - a Temple of Yaristis - god of Charity and Good and protector of the Meek, Weak and Poor.

The giant was a servant of the under-cult of this district. No one speaks of it - but we all feel its festering tendrils from time to time. The priests of Yaristis had begun denouncing the cult beneath our feet in order to help us out of its poisonous grasp.

The cult sent the giant to serve as a message that it would not tolerate a new religion here.

The man pulled Telveran away from the crowd.

As a representative of the Celestail Expeditionary Forces, it would be a great reward to the people of Gawane to see this cult taken down. It is not a large cult - but has facets in many of our lives - and is a constant threat.

If you will do this for us - I will show you the way inside. It is through the sewers over here.

"Aye, If I can be the means to help the people here, then I will gladly do so. Show me to this place." Telveran follows the man.

"If you have any other information on what may dwell within, please let me know."

Telveran will follow the man to the spot indicated. If there is room to ride Nimblefoot, then do so. Otherwise, Telveran will lead Nimblefoot and continue on foot.

As a follower of Yaristis - I would never step foot within that place down there willingly. That said, what little I know is that they often hold their operations and ceremonies at night - so I would expect few to be down there. I frankly don't know though.

Good luck.

You are moving into the Sewer map. Although it is difficult to figure a large creature like a horse moving through a sewer grate - perhaps it is more reasonable to explain it as moving around to a sewer outlet and coming back here. The sewer map is the standard one - so the large horse will be suffering for movement.

In either case, you will still have the option to bring the horse for the 3rd encounter - so no worries if you decide you want it for the last one (which may or may not be in the sewer...).

The simple answer is no. The type is outsider (as I alluded to in the opening - but I'll tell you that really doesn't narrow things down much...).

Telveran wades his way through the sludge of the sewer tunnel until he soon hears a conversation. As soon as he stops to listen however, the conversation abruptly stops and a single word is yelled out: Intruder!

The word is followed by the sound of an iron door slamming shut.

The sound is from starting block 2 - you are in starting block 1. You win initiative

As he steps forward, he sees the feathery-winged being come into sight - an elf by all normal definitions, but the wings are out of place. Without further warning, the flying elf points at Telveran and he explodes in fire.

The priest, while humanoid, is no human. Unfortunately, most of the distinguishing features are hidden behind a suit of ornate Full Plate. The head under the helmet is clearly not human shaped though - bearing a longer snout and teeth like a dinosaur. His intent for battle is clear though - a purple-metal Glaive in his hands. Across the breastplate, he bears the symbol of a god that Telveran doesn't recognize.

You win initaitive. Mounted - you are able to see your opponent over the center statue. Try to give me a few rounds if you can - but if you want to run this round by round that's fine as well. That's an adamantine glaive by the way.

Interrupt if Telveran is damaged, dispelled or charge lane is blocked for some reason.

Telveran moves around the outer edge of the temple, preparing himself for the encounter. The priest intones a prayer and seems to become more muscled. Telveran touches the blade of his greatsword and prays to Bahamut to bless it. Then the priest intones another prayer and points at Telveran. Telveran immediately becomes concerned - as if the priest before him is as powerful as a giant.

[Round 1]
Telveran casts Protection from Evil and moves to (9,30)

Telveran continues moving forward activating more defenses -- after all he has fought actual giants before.

Continue with actions -- looks like charging may not be possible but continue along with buff sequence. Can also draw lance in case it is needed.

Prot from evil should give Telveran +2 resistance to his will save if the cleric is evil.
Plus Telveran is immune to fear -- Doom is a fear affect.

Good point on both accounts - you made the save, but it wouldn't have worked anyway... my mistake. Will continue in a bit if I have the time.

Telveran continues his cautious approach, tapping a pair of tattoos on his thigh and hefting his massive lance into his hands. The priest prays twice more, but for benefits Telveran cannot identify. The effects of the latter one are apparent however - as the priest doubles in size, grinning toothily at Telveran.

[Round 3]
Telveran draws his lance and taps his tattoo of Defensive Precognition and moves to (28,27)
Priest casts a spell [Spellcraft 17 vs DC15+x, failed]

[Round 4]
Telveran taps his tattoo of Offensive Precognition and moves to (29,15)
Priest casts a spell [Spellcraft 6 vs DC15+x, failed] and doubles in size. He takes a 5ft step to (27,7).

Telveran acts with determination and rides forward to fight shouting his battlecry "By the Power of Bahamut, I have the Power!"

Telveran will do something a bit unorthodox here.
Try to get where he can't use his glaive effectively.

Drop lance, draw greatsword and ride forward (no charge) 7 hexes to base -- attack using full expertise for -5 to attack and +5 to AC. Telveran should AC 35 before ride for cover.

Remember that blessed weapon autoconfirms Telveran's crits on an evil foe.

Nimblefoot can attack normally.

Next round full attack (no PA or expertise) using divine might and smiting on first attack (gsword/gsword and bite) w/ Nimblefoot also full attacking.

Use ride for cover and or mounted combat as necessary.

Note that bulls str and divine power both provide enchancment bonus to str so don't stack.

I know we're already pretty behind - but I'll try to get this finished up tomorrow. I don't have the time today due to a family emergency.

Not in a big rush. Take care of what you need to.
I will give you more tactics to help speed things up.

Actions for Further rounds

Use remaining Divine might on following rounds with full attack.

Use lay on hands if reduced below 50hp on self. If he attacks nimblefoot instead, use lay on hands on nimblefoot unless nimblefoot is obviously dead.

If Telveran is not able to hit for 3 straight rounds, cast true strike defensively and full power attack with full attack sequence the following round after a successful cast.

Interrupt if he does a special attack of some kind (sunder, trip, etc)

Telveran moves forward cautiously and dodges the attacking swing from the giant troglodyte. Coming closer, the musk of the troglodyte is overwhelming, but despite it, Telveran and Nimblefoot are able to not be sickened by it.

Telveran slices his sword at the priest, but is ineffective. The priest in turn tries to cast a spell, but fumbles the prayer apparently. Telveran connects a nasty slice across the Troglodyte's abdomen and the priest howls in pain from it. In retaliation, the priest casts another spell and the entire area around him is burst with sound and chaotic energy. Telveran shakes off the worst of it, as does Nimblefoot.

Telveran slices again, but his sword is ineffective at breaching the formidable defenses of the priest. His bite however finds purchase, but Telveran finds it is not very effective. The priest steps away and calls another prayer down, and a javelin appears between them. It immediately strikes at Nimblefoot, but misses due to Telveran's proficiency at riding.

Telveran connects once again with his sword - landing another debilitating blow on the priest, but not enough to take the priest down completely. The javelin attacks twice more - and despite Telveran's natural ability, he can't evade it enough. The priest follows up and strikes Nimblefoot down before concentrating on Telveran himself - striking him once across the face and leaving his armor scratched and a few spots of bleeding.

Telveran continues slashing and biting the priest hoping to finish the battle soon enough to save Nimblefoot's life.

Continue to full attack.

Telveran can't protect Nimblefoot from enough attacks if he stops to heal Nimblefoot. Hopefully, Telveran can take the priest down in time to lay on hands for Nimblefoot.

Don't know if it will matter but have you accounted for Telveran's DR 3/adamantine?

Telveran checks his faithful steed and finds that Nimblefoot had perished in the battle. "Rest in peace, my friend. You were brave and faithful to the end.
With an echoing roar of rage and sorrow Telveran and Rascal mourned their lost friend.

Telveran took the holy symbol of the priest and opened the doors behind the priest. With the loss of their head priest, the remaining acolytes surrendered meekly.

Telveran freed the cult's prisoners, all them 'missing' residents of Gawane, and took the captive acolytes back to the streets of Gawane.

Stopping by the Yaristis temple, Telveran informed the Yaristis clergy that at least this portion of the undercult had been smashed and would trouble the folk of Gawane no more.

Telveran turned over his prisoners to the magistrates for trial and headed home the Marble Castle to report on his mission.
