| MitzaVolchenko03-02-07, 04:48 AM | Gwar's words echo in The Illustrated Man's mind as he strolls south toward Kelartus, leading Dreamer. He nods to a passing city watch patrol pleasantly before sliding closer to the buildings as he passes the district gates. All of his senses heighten as he enters the less familiar streets. Ahead of him a group of street vendors hawk their wares. Plain grain cakes fried with a bit of honey. The prices are higher than they should be and further down the block he sees a gorup of beggar children watching the vendors, clearly hoping for a scrap to fall. Dreamer tugs him toward the vendors...what horse can resist grain and honey? As they near the vendors Dreamer halts and flicks his ears back, not upset, but alert and listening. |
| McJarvis03-02-07, 10:44 PM | The Illustrated Man locked eyes with the vendors one by one with as much normal expression as he could muster. The ways of this part of the world were not yet well known to him, even to the extent of not knowing what a standard greeting would be. He picks one of the most assuming vendors. "Hail friend. I have been sent here by The Warefare Alliance with assurances of protection from whatever the unlawful and those who would Trade in Death would threaten upon your humble businesses. Fear Not, for the WAREFARE Aliiance has heard the outcry of the common people against the apathy of the council, the bloodthirsty nature of The Celestials, and the tireless thieves & murderers that plague the city." Of course, I'm just making stuff up here. Not sure exactly what you wanted out of TIM. Of course, since I have well-renown status(:D) they might recognize me for who I am. This is OK too-> unless they are some sort of wacko pacifists.... |
| MitzaVolchenko03-03-07, 02:43 AM | The vendor smiles graciously while examining TIM as if evaluating how much coin he might have to spend. We have heard of your alliance. The Warfare alliance is well known in Gladius, and certainly anything that will bring greater peace and freedom from the undesirable sort will be most welcome. Dreamer graciously snatches a grain cake from the vendor's sample tray and then flips his head around to look up the street toward the beggar children, his ears perked toward them with keen interest. |
| McJarvis03-03-07, 08:38 AM | Raising one eyebrow, TIM motions towards the children with an outstretched arm. With a somewhat angry voice... "Are your conditions in this district really so poor that children would be lowered to the position of beggers?" With this he rode off towards the children, hoping to ascertain how to best remove them from the streets and perhaps gather some more information from them as to how they came to their dire straights. Perhaps the Warfare Alliance could start an orphanage of some sort? Of course, spending other people's gold was always easy. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-03-07, 12:36 PM | Watch your purse around the gutter trash, sir. The vendor calls after TIM. As TIM approaches the children, they scatter into alleys. Reaching the first alley, TIM just catches a glimpse of two of them as they clamber up onto a rooftop and disappear. Lots of possibilities here. This is bound to happen when one does something as general as 'go make friends' :P Fear not, there are encounters pretty much everywhere you go...how you handle them and whether you win the required fight will determine the tone of the friendships you make in Kelartus. |
| McJarvis03-03-07, 02:51 PM | Not really feeling in the mood to chase after children with his very-valuable time, TIM rides back to the vendors. "They certainly are a bit skiddish, at the very least. What, pray tell, has left this particular district in such disorder? In my homeland such brazen poverty on the streets is unheard of." Yeah, right? I almost forgot TIM is lawful neutral and not lawful good ;) [[I tend to think of him as an arcane paladin.]] |
| MitzaVolchenko03-05-07, 12:10 AM | Well you see, sir, times are tough. Food shortages, the odd outbreak of plague...not much we can do about it but try to keep our own spirits attached to our bodies. The merchant seems ill at ease, and Dreamer continues to flick his ears about as if listening to something above him. |
| McJarvis03-05-07, 12:58 PM | TIM carefully scans the street around him, and attempts to listen for whatever it is that has got Dreamer's attention. As he is doing this, he replies. "Indeed, there is little to do about sickness and whatnot...but what is this of food shortages? Surely there is enough food is a thriving city such as this to go around....though it seems to me that such conditions are always preceded by a lack of moral men to stand up to the great evils of this world. Surely the Celestials and the Traders are to blame...evil men hiding behind the pretense of law and order...." It appears TIM has momentarily forgotten that he is in a conversation due to his being so intent on scanning his surroundings for any clues as to fixable causes to the plight presented before him. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-05-07, 08:30 PM | TIM listens closely but can't catch any of whathas his companion's interest. Dreamer flicks his ears toward a nearby rooftop, then snatching another grain cake from the dismayed looking vendor whips his head around to face a wall across the street which appears to be surrounding a courtyard. It is about 10' high. |
| McJarvis03-07-07, 01:17 PM | TIM sees the dismayed look on the vendor & throws a gold coin to him for the horse-treats. "Fear not, friend...I am a friend of the law, and would never dream of taking what I do not work for. Only those who are evil would stand against such ideas: and I am no evil man!" With this, TIM gives in to his unsettling feeling that he is supposed to be *doing* something. He takes Dreamer's uncanny sense of storyline to heart and rides over to inspect the fence more closely. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-07-07, 03:08 PM | LOL the horse is only distracted by food and not talking. He also has a positive listen score :P From his position next to the wall, TIM could reach the top and pull himself up to get a real look. Without doing so, he can hear a whispered conversation followed by the sound of something being moved (possibly a crate or barrel) and then being moved again. The conversation ends at that point, and TIM looks up to see a child of indeterminate gender scale the far wall and disappear onto the roof top of a taller building beyond the courtyard. The child moved at a rate that would indicate either an extremely proficient climber or magic. |
| McJarvis03-07-07, 09:55 PM | TIM lifts himself up so that he can see over the fence. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-08-07, 03:30 AM | TIM looks over the wall and sees a shabby courtyard. The door into the adjacent building is boarded up. The fountain in the middle is dry. There is a stack of none too solid looking crates and barrels in the near right hand corner. There is an occupied coop of pigeons in the far right hand corner. The building to which the courtyard belongs is four stories tall and looks like it may have been a tenement. The door on the street side (not far to the left from where TIM is) appears to be chained shut. "That place has been condemned. Occasionally guards come and clean out the filth that sometimes breaks in to use it as a flop," the vendor's tone is friendlier now that Dreamer's filching has been paid for. |
| McJarvis03-08-07, 08:08 AM | I'm kind of confused on what I should be doing here. Nothing seems to indicate "adventure" in the slightest....? .. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-08-07, 08:39 AM | You have options and it is my obligation to place encounters in such a way as to give you three. You have a few leads and a fewthings you can investigate closer. If TIM dithers about in the streets long enough, the vendors will close up shop and go home, the guard will thin to dog watch numbers and plot can jump you in the street. Atthe moment, you have the sounds you heard, the beggar children, a shifty vendor, a condemned building, and one ofthe beggar children who climbs at prodigious rates. Where you go from here is up to you. |
| McJarvis03-08-07, 08:46 AM | Perhaps it's just because I grew up in an inner-city neighborhood that I don't think any of these things are especially adventuring sounding? ;) TIM decides to further investigate the condemned building. Ordering Dreamer to stay put[and, of course, defend herself if she's attacked], he lifts himself up over the wall and lightly ends up on the other side. I'm assuming TIM's massive strength will be more than enough of a climb check, though I've been wrong before... Once on the other side, he makes his way to the building, attempting to discern whether this is where the children "play". |
| MitzaVolchenko03-08-07, 05:28 PM | The courtyard area is shabby. There are weeds in the cracks between paving stones and the few flower beds have gone to seed. Looking about TIM notices hastily brushed away scrape marks near the stak of barrels and crates. He does not notice anything to indicate that the boarded up door into the building has been disturbed in some time. Hehe...well as a kid in an innercity neighborhood are you going to tell met hat you didn't poke around every vacant lot, empty building, abandoned car, or unobserved alley? You musta been a far more obedient and cautious kid than I was. |
| McJarvis03-08-07, 08:47 PM | Not when my alignment was lawful neutral ;) TIM does a search of the yard, making care to check the barrels for any strangeness or stow-aways that might use them as a home.... "Might as well keep the peace & make sure the district is in order, while I'm here...." he thought to himself. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-08-07, 08:56 PM | Poking and prodding around the barrels and crates, TIM initially finds nothing but then as he swats one of the barrels in frustration, the entire stack swings aside revealing a set of stairs leading down. The stairs are carved into the stone and dimly lit by candles every 15'. They appear to lead at least 60' down, are 5' across, and it looks likethe passage turns at the bottom. |
| McJarvis03-08-07, 09:53 PM | "Lit candles? Surely this is a sign of the unlawful presence of someone...other...than me." With this though, TIM slowly descended the stairs, keeping his spear out while he went... |
| MitzaVolchenko03-08-07, 09:59 PM | TIM emerges in a natural cavern that has been converted for other purposes and has torches lighting it. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=cavern;a=TIM,M,1,1 |
| McJarvis03-08-07, 10:01 PM | listen for enemy, wait a good minute before proceeding. Once I am sure I am alone, keep moving inward...slowly. Use half my actions for movement, half for active spot/listen |
| MitzaVolchenko03-08-07, 10:31 PM | TIM doesn't hear anything nor does he see anything moving within his range of view. The torch light and faint dripping of water make for an eerie feeling as he moves forward slowly, alert for anything amiss. As he moves out of his corner of the cavern he can see that a makeshift dormitory has been set up. There is a camp kitchen on the near side of the pool, but no signs of life. Odd crates and barrels are stacked against some of the walls. The statues for our purposes are fully natural columns. He won't get a shot at spotting until he passes the first column to get a clear lookathe diagonally opposite area. If he wants a buff round, now is the time to take it. Listens are quite impossible for both him and his foe(s). |
| McJarvis03-09-07, 07:05 AM | Thanks, just making sure we were in initiative now :) TIM furrows his brow. "I can sense something not right here...". With that, he begins spellcasting. TIM casts Expeditious Retreat, then Bull's Strength if he gets time. He then looks for his opponent. |
| McJarvis03-10-07, 10:39 PM | ... Tactics for rest of fight: If facing against something large & melee, attempt to use speed//range(bow) to advantage. If it is apparent that I will be based, cast enlarge person & engage with spear. If low on hp, cast shield(maybe around 15 or so) |

To his horror as he passes into the main cavernhe spots the two giant monstrous scorpions laying wait forthe unwary! He quickly picks a target and fires at it, striking true (11dmg) and angering the monster. The first scorpion moves to attack its prey trying to get a grasp on TIM and squeeze the life out of him. It slashes forward with a claw hitting (10dmg; Opposed grapple TIM=28 vs GSI=14), but it cannot get a firm grasp on TIM. | MitzaVolchenko03-14-07, 09:50 PM | 5 rounds to squeeze back down the tunnel. | MitzaVolchenko03-14-07, 10:21 PM | TIM quickly takes stock and groans at the injuries as he picks the scorpions bits off of him. Moving to the camp kitchen by the pool he notices an open crate with a rag covering it and grabs the rag to help in his washing up. As he's scrubbing the ichor from his face and armor, he hears footsteps from the NE quadrant of the cavern. |
| McJarvis03-14-07, 10:24 PM | TIM mutters to himself. "I always get the messy ones, don't I? Ah well...who knows how these large beasts came to live in this area of the city....at least I was able dispatch them without endangering the citizens...." Hearing the footsteps, he slowly turns to face the direction in which he hears them. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-14-07, 10:26 PM | That depends on which citizens you mean, A young man, more boy than man, really, emerges from the shadows beyond the pond. |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 07:09 AM | Minor concern-> TIM is actually on fight 3/3 right now...he'll need to buy expendables before going into week 3 of the mission, unless you're just going to resolve it all in one fight. (which I'm fine with, since I'd rather end this mission on week 3 of my 3FC anyway) More along RP notation: Is the man in front of me armed? Regarding the young boy approaching him with some caution(for TIM is still covered in his latest foe) and concern(for it is embarrassing to be covered in one's enemies) for his own appearance, TIM states simply, "Well met, stranger...I am an emissary from the Warfare Alliance, sent here to care for the citizens of Kelartus. Who might you be?" |
| MitzaVolchenko03-15-07, 01:21 PM | I am a citizen of Kelartus whose home you just invaded and whose guardians you just slew. The boy's tone is ice cold and his eyes are old beyond their years. While TIM is studying him, he starts to notice that the youngster is painfully thin. His clothes are patched masterfully, but still worn. There is no sign of weaponry except a small eating knife at his belt. If this is fight 3, I'll let you buy either now or at mission conclusion (as if you had bought during mision). I can't combo two encounters into one unless you have a suicide wish. |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 02:37 PM | Alright, just wanted to be sure I got chance to. Don't wanna have to face two fights at ECL 6 with no extra bling. :) .. |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 06:07 PM | Raising a skeptical eyebrow, TIM thinks to himself. "So you...ah...say this building belongs to you? I've been informed by more...reliable sources...that this building has been condemned by the law and no one is to live here." |
| MitzaVolchenko03-15-07, 06:15 PM | We don't live in the building. How do you condemn a cave? |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 06:35 PM | TIM replied with a bemused tone in his voice. "By building a condemned building on top of it, then using the cave as a basement." TIM thinks to himself for a second, trying to gather some bearing...and then waved his hand, dismissing the whole subject entirely. "The creatures are a different matter entirely, however. They were dealers in death...and thus had to be destroyed. Now this has been done, and it is good. However, I will not merely sit by and do this good while ignoring the consequences therof. Let me do something for you, young one. You needed a guardian...what better replacement than the one who could defeat your old ones? I will not abide intruders where the law is concerned." |
| MitzaVolchenko03-15-07, 07:15 PM | They were bugs, not minions of the Nine Hells. Who are you to judge our choice of pets? And are you going to stay for your lifespan to guard us? I somehow doubt it. The boy's tone is bitter and and acerbic. He continues to move toward TIM. Just get out and go back to your own bright life. Leave us in peace! |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 07:25 PM | "With my offer refused, I have little reason to remain." And with that, TIM backed out of the cavarn while quickly half-bowing and pressing his hands together as if praying & headed up the tunnel. During this, his thoughts turned to the world around him... "It is good that he refused...it is difficult to work for those who do not understand that murder, even in defense of one's own life, is evil. I bet they would even throw in with the Celestials...the nerve of it all." |
| MitzaVolchenko03-15-07, 07:32 PM | As TIM turns to head toward the stairs, he sees half a dozen children carrying the body of the other scorpion, in pieces into the cavern. One of them a young teenaged girl is crying. |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 07:41 PM | TIM contemplates the great evils in this world, and the inevitability of someone getting emotionally hurt in this world. Surely the Scorpions had killed some small child's parents at some point...and they would have again. Such beasts are capable of little else, they are the definition of death-dealers. It is better to side against evil when such things happen. The consequences weigh on his heart, but he feels he has made the right choice. And keeps walking. Surely someone in this district had need of his services...or had need of his services, if read into properly. What can I say? TIM is an insane magical experiment that believes he was put on this earth to destroy anything that takes life...unless that thing also aides him on his quest. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-15-07, 07:50 PM | Or is himself? He pushes past them as they stare at him with underfed, tear reddened faces. On the stairs he encounters an impassable throng of children all heading down. |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 07:56 PM | Hmmm...hope none of them bump into me. I wouldn't want to hurt them on my armor spikes. (speaking of which-> ever wonder why Gladius players wear armor spikes everywhere? ;) ) TIM waits patiently for the throng of children to pass. He is not in a particular hurry, and does not seem to see any immediate danger that they could be in. His mind wanders off to a distant place, where the echoing screams being silenced by his hands around his former master's neck haunt him. If not for the dark tattoos covering his face, a single tear running down his cheek would be all too obvious. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-15-07, 08:00 PM | From behind him where he stands at the stair entrance, he hears: Lucas! I don't know who that is, but you know the rules! At a guess without looking he'd say it is the teenaged girl that just walked by him. He killed Crack and Squeeze for no better reason than that they are here! Anyone else here "are there no prisons? are there no workhouses?" echoing around here? |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 08:03 PM | Hey now, I don't care where they are, per-se...I just don't particularly understand how TIM(a warrior) can help them out any more than his previous offer. TIM continues to wait for the throng of children to pass. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-15-07, 08:25 PM | The last small child trudges up to TIM and looks up at him with hard eyes. The boy couldn't be older than six and something in his features makes TIM think he may not be all human. Someday someone will treat you as you have treated us...perhaps someday soon. The statement rings shockingly of prophesy, and TIM feels a cold chill down his spine. The boy turns away and moves on to join the others by the pool. |
| McJarvis03-15-07, 08:26 PM | TIM thinks to himself. "Hmm...this could be a good omen. I would like for someone to offer assistance to me in the future...." |
| MitzaVolchenko03-15-07, 09:35 PM | As he nears the top of the stairs, TIM's good feeling vanishes as he hears Dreamer's scream of rage. He can almost hear the child's voice in his head saying 'toldja so.' You are twenty onth wrong side of a 10' wall to see what is going on. The climb check is DC10 to get over the wall with the crates for assistance. Dreamer was about 20' down the road from where you crossed the wall guarding the door to the building. You can hear the clatter of hooves, and itsounds like Dreamer is moving away from you. |
| McJarvis03-16-07, 08:14 AM | H'mm...DC 40 jump check to clear the wall. Dare I try? ;) On a more serious note-> is my exp retreat still considered up for this? I'm not sure how many "minutes" have passed...perhaps we could say that climbing the wall is my last action with it on? :-) TIM, only slightly irritated at the child's stupid sense of karma, quickens his pace and climbs the wall, hurling(by climbing) himself to the other side, checking to see what is happening with dreamer while he is in midair. Climb the wall. "midair" is just refering to the short drop he takes on the other side of the wall. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-16-07, 01:49 PM | TIM struggles at the wall and takes two tries to get over it. As he finally clears it, he sees Dreamer halted at the end of the block facing an alley. The horse is sweating profusely and steam pours off of him from the exertion. Even from this distance, TIM can see the blood on Dreamer's neck and shoulders. |
| McJarvis03-16-07, 03:36 PM | TIM runs to assist & ascertain what's going on. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-16-07, 03:45 PM | TIM reaches Dreamer's side and the horse immediately shoves his nose into TIM's chest. There are slashes along Dreamer's neck and shoulders that look as though they are claw marks. After assuring himself that Dreamer is not dying, TIM notices that the streets have become empty. There is nothing apparent down the alley. Across the street and down a block, he spies a woman peeking through battered shutters. The building doesn't look to be in much better shape than the one covering the cavern. |
| McJarvis03-16-07, 06:51 PM | TIM looks cautiously around for any indication of what might have happened. After a few seconds of seeing nothing but a scared woman down the street, he decides to lead Dreamer towards the house. As he approaches.... Don't want to ninja you. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-17-07, 06:23 AM | He hears the shuffling inside the house and a whispered argument, though he can't make out the words. There is a loud thud of indeterminate nature and then the eerie silence on the street resumes. |
| McJarvis03-19-07, 07:36 AM | TIM walks up to the house with dreamer in tow & raps on the door. "Hail Citizen, is there something I can help you with? Did you see anything?" |
| MitzaVolchenko03-19-07, 02:43 PM | Come around to the side and bring the poor beast with you...it is in pain as are you. The instructions are hissed through the door. When TIM goes around otthe narrow alley a gate is opened allowing he and Dreamer to step into a cramped 15' by 15' area. |
| McJarvis03-19-07, 08:47 PM | ...and TIM walks in. |
| MitzaVolchenko03-19-07, 09:57 PM | Here, drink this, she smiles wanly at TIM and hands him a large mug of bitter smelling liquid. In the close quarters of the little yard, she runs her hands over Dreamer, gritting her teeth and wincing as she passes over the worst of the wounds. Dreamer relaxes completely under her touch, and the wounds close though TIM sees no sign of any spellcasting. What are you doing around here, anyway? |
| McJarvis03-22-07, 11:47 AM | Sorry for the delay! TIM thinks to himself about the implications of such a question at this point in his life. Deciding to go with a more defensive response, he merely states "The Warefare Alliance sent me to this district to help protect it and keep order. I am here to protect any who need protecting, and to neutralize any threats to the immediate area." |
| MitzaVolchenko03-24-07, 11:27 AM | Lofty purpose, she looks to make sure he is drinking his drink. I am sorry about Lucas. I am afraid you aren't going to make many friends in this area except the merchants after what you did to Crack and Squeeze, her eyes unfocus a bit as if watching something that others can't see. Lucas normally would have done this for you himself, but...he was hurt and angry....you know how it is with boys that age better than I do, I am sure. |
| McJarvis03-24-07, 08:55 PM | Slightly confused, TIM seems no reason not to be polite. "Erm...excuse me M'am? You seem to have a sight that is beyond my abilities...please share who this person is that you speak of." |
| MitzaVolchenko03-25-07, 02:44 AM | Tsk tsk tsk. While I am sure he didn't properly introduce himself, I know you spoke with him. You killed the guardians. That was really very uncivil of you, bu tour rules are not to be broken, even with good cause. To do so would be to embrace the sort of law that rules this city...which is to say nearly none. Lord Devon tries, but he cannot overrule the COuncil, and Kelartus suffers for it. She glares at him.Drink all of that. |
| McJarvis03-26-07, 08:43 PM | TIM drinks it all, grateful for the assistance. "Is there anything that remains that I might be able to assist with? I, as well as the people I represent, want the best for this district." |
| McJarvis03-31-07, 07:04 PM | *poke* |
| MitzaVolchenko04-04-07, 02:25 PM | I am afraid that you do not understand. Much of Kelartus exists in a happy normal state. For those that live in the quieter, more prosperous areas, life is fine. But for those that do not, or thoe whose lives have been taxed out of existence by the Council, the options are fewer. Any breach of "the law" is met with terrible punishments. Why do you think there are so many orphans? The law leaves me alone and allows me to do as I do because I have certain gifts that they find useful. Lucas and the others, well there are, Isuppose prisons and workhouses they could go to, but that would be a death sentence. If you want to help, take a look around and see who really wrongs the folk of Kelartus. The children certainly didn't do this to your fine friend here, she strokes Dreamer's now healed neck and then offers him a small lump of sugar. |
| McJarvis04-04-07, 09:12 PM | TIM politely excuses himself & informs the nice lady that he will do just that. He takes to the streets looking for whatever did that to his horse. |
| MitzaVolchenko04-04-07, 11:11 PM | Emerging back onto the street, TIM proceeds back to where he found Dreamer bleeding. There is no sgn of what attacked the horse, but as he studies the area for some clue, he hears a scream in the distance abruptly cut off by a feral snarling. |
| McJarvis04-07-07, 08:35 PM | TIM mounts up on dreamer & heads off in the direction of the scream. |
| MitzaVolchenko04-08-07, 11:40 AM | Mitza really wasnot ready to step back in this last week. Submit tactics for a pair of hellhounds, city map, they will be starting NE corner with their victim. You start NW corner. |
