Fortunately, Talltree's Circle of Elders was able to ressurect one of the important beings (Time of Dread II, 1 (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=2977993) 2 (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=2977993)). Talltree's Circle of Elders consists of seven old elves led by Most Ancient One Callenfae, an elf beyond any time reckoning. Though Callenfae is by far the most powerful one, the most famous Circle member is surely Eniolissaryn the Elder who made his appearance in Gladius long ago. The recent events have been taxing for Talltrees, and many elves payed with their lives. But while the other Elders focus on the defense of the village and looking for obvious enemies, Uhmentarymster the Old makes his own investigation which lead him deeper into a secret plot by someone whom no one would suspect to be the biggest threat to the settlement... |
| MindWandererB01-31-07, 07:28 PM | The ancient elf Uhmentarymster has received a request to meet with Corporal Aeosil. Upon arriving, he finds Leif Goldeneye also in attendance. After the usual pleasantries, Aeosil begins: "Now that peace has been establish with the Warfare Alliance for the time being, and the Freedom Fighters have been... dealt with, we can turn to other threats in the city. Our next concern is the 'Gladius Resistance.' They claim to wish to restore 'order' to the city, but so far all they have managed to do is burn and kill. This must be stopped, and I would like you two to assist. "It seems that the Resistance uses beasts of some kind in their most destructive attacks, which accounts for some of the indescriminateness of the killings. Our forensic investigations have determined that there seem to be two different sorts of beast, based on the types of wounds and circumstances of the attacks. Both types seem to be large monsters of some kind that prefer to attack with their claws, although one group in particular has occasionally used other methods. "We have placed agents in the district who were intended to aggravate these rioters and thus draw their attacks. We expect the Resistance to retaliate against those agents tonight. Your primary task is to eliminate the attackers. Protect our agents only if it is possible to do so without sacrificing the primary objective. "Do either of you have any questions before you head out?" |
| Caterane01-31-07, 08:09 PM | "I would appreciate any information you have about these beasts." Uhme said "but otherwise, Eule and me are ready to fly out" Once the corporal had given a detailed description of the reports, Uhme draws a book out of a bag and pours through it to get as much information as possible about the opponent. |
| MindWandererB02-01-07, 03:52 PM | "Since we cannot be sure which of these groups will be attacking which of our agents, we cannot prepare you for your specific opponent. Neither have been spotted by any reliable witnesses. All I can tell you is that the group that sometimes uses weapons often leaves a trail, at least for a while, while the one that uses its claws does not, so perhaps it flies, teleports, plane shifts, or such. "Uhmentarymster, the three agents you are assigned to will be found outside the cooper's shop in Gorthyum. Keep an eye on them, but do not come too close or the Freedom Fighters may become suspicious and abort their attack." After giving instructions to Leif as well, he concludes, "The strength of the heavens be with both of you." Uhme finds the cooper's shop easily enough, and sure enough, he finds a group of three gnomes outside it, surreptitiously identified with one of CEF's secret signs. There is nothing left to do but prepare, and find a place to wait for the attack. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=city;a=GnoA,S,21,38,Gno me agent A;b=GnoB,S,22,37,Gnome agent B;c=GnoC,S,21,36,Gnome agent C |
| Caterane02-01-07, 05:44 PM | "Gnomes?" Uhmentarymster said to his fellow elder from out of their hiding place, raising an eyebrow. "Do we believe that?" although he looked into Eule's direction, Thylle replied. "Not for a second" The two elders looked at each other. "As always?" - "Certainly" - "Ready?" - "Ready when you are. Eule?" - *Hoot Hoot* The three companions nodded, then exploded into action... The two elders blinked and looked again at Eule "Hm, maybe you're right my feathered friend and the gnomes are our CEF agents" - "Indeed. Let's wait for someone else to attack." and together the Elders and wise Eule waited on, watching the now much more friendly looking gnomes... Start with scroll of mirror image in hand. Rnd 1: Uhme - still in Golddragon Form from last fight - casts mirror image and flies over the group triggering the sleep symbol, then passes on out of close range+30. Thyle rides in, manifests an overchannelled Energy Missile (Fire) for 10d6 and Reflex Dc25 on all opponents (talented negates overchannel damage), 10 PP spent, then rides out of LOS and close range still with the same single move (that's no problem with 200' and city map) so no concentration check. Eule flies over the gnomes at max altitude to scout. EDIT: Ben, did I understand anything wrong? The Leif thread speaks about CEF Agents on the map. But if I'm not supposed to attack the gnomes, then I'm not sure what you expect me to write now. Do I have prebuff rounds? Can I pick my locations? *confused* |
| MindWandererB02-01-07, 06:19 PM | Whoops, sorry. Didn't realize that was ambiguous. The gnomes (which are a good race, last time I checked, and totally appropriate to work for CEF) are the ones you're protecting. You're basically doing a stakeout. Pick your locations, and you can add any long-lasting prebuffs you like--the attack will be some time tonight, but it's technically unknown when. (To be fair, it won't be that long, because you are entitled to make use of your ongoing effects, but keep it OOC.) |
| Caterane02-01-07, 06:54 PM | Actually, we use the time roll to determine prebuffs normally which is 1 hour. I don't think it should be allowed to allow me any additional prebuffs. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=city;a=Gnom,S,21,38,.;b =Gnom,S,22,37,.;c=Gnom,S,21,36,.;d=Uhme, M,21,19,.;e=Thyl,L,20,13,.,. Uhme is invisible on a roof, Eule is under his cloak and Thylle is well concealed from many directions. Just give me the appropriate information then please. |
| MindWandererB02-01-07, 07:48 PM | Maybe I'm just blind... Is Thylle the designated rider for the Phantom Steed? I can't find that info....Uhme and company are hardly waiting any time at all before they hear the flap of wings. From alleys scarcely large enough to conceal them fly six creatures with which Uhme is quite familiar: hieracosphinxes. Strong but stupid, these flying monsters seldom have tactics more involved than diving, pouncing on their foes, and rending them to pieces with the talons on all four limbs. Because I need way more map pins than I have, I will be using each color of pin to represent a group of creatures, rather than the movement of one creature. So each of the three green dots is a CEF gnome. The hieracosphinxes are at an altitude of 30 feet and are closing in on the gnomes fast. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=city;a=Uhme,M,21,19,Uhm e;b=Thyl,L,20,13,Thylle;c=Gnom,S,21,38,2 2,37,21,36,Gnomes;d=HSAC,L,6,42,12,47,20 ,50,Hieracospinxes A-C;e=HSDF,L,30,50,38,46,43,34,Hieracosphi nxes D-F |
| Caterane02-02-07, 04:48 AM | "Holla! Six Hieracosphinxes?" Thylle asked again in disbelief then concentrated on shaping ectoplasm to his will. Uhme knew that he needed to protect himself too from these beast; fortunately both were still not visible. Not so fortunately for the gnomes though but there was no point in sacrificing the elders on which the CEF so relies. The prime objective were the beasts. 6 Hieracos plus you want me to protect the gnomes? Impossible. Not even the Harvester II could achieve that. Setup: Uhme & Eule are on the roof, Thylle on phantom steed behind the wall. Uhme has a mirror image scroll in hand. Round 1: Uhme casts Mirror Image from scroll, Thylle manifests a ML 10 Astral Construct with Improved Fly and Improved DR. Use Overchannel and Talented. |
| MindWandererB02-02-07, 04:10 PM | I knew the "protect" aspect would be close to, if not actually, impossible, but that's not required by your mission parameters. All you have to do to succed in the op is beat the monsters. The hieracosphinxes spring into action. Three of them dive onto the hapless gnomes, tearing two of them nearly to pieces. Two circle around to cut off any escape, and one of those two takes a string bite out of the surviving gnome. The last sphinx is a bit slower than the others and remains overhead. Meanwhile, Thylle begins to conjure up an Astral Construct while Uhme uses his scroll to create (invisible) images of himself. The closest hieracoxphinx hears Uhme chanting his spell and alerts its companions in the unique language of the sphinxes. All six of them spin their ugly heads around to look straight at the wizard. The closest hieracosphinx takes to the air again, flying over Uhme's head and clearly preparing to dive on him. One of the others follows him, but the remaining four are slower to react. Thylle finishes manifesting his construct, placing it... | Caterane02-02-07, 06:28 PM | Uhme is on the roof so he's at 30ft. FYI: The city map has a max altitude of 50 ft. If you handle that differently you could have told me beforehand. If there's anything else that you have modified now would be a good time to tell. No really Roy, now's the time. Roy? Crap (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0408.html). ;) :D Round 2: The Astral Construct appears on the indicated position, 50ft in the air and immideately charges the next sphinx. Note that Sphinx D cannot maintain it's minimum forward speed nor turn in place with poor maneuverability so it drops 70ft to the ground on its turn. Additonally, Sphinx A is in reach of the AC which triggers an AoO if it does anything but withdraw. This AoO is a trip attempt (Construct+13 vs Sphinx+9). If successful, the sphinx drops 70ft too. Thyle rides forward, manifests an overchanneled fire energy ball (9d6+9 fire, Reflex Dc22) on the four sphinxes and rides away to the indicated position. Note that the sphinx are poor flyers and need to spend quite some effort to ascend or turn. Uhme's action comes after the sphinx. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=city;a=Uhme,M,21,19,.;b =Thyl,L,21,13,25,13,25,17,5,4,.;c=AC,L,2 8,19,23,24,.;d=Sphx,L,19,40,21,40,21,21, .;e=Sphx,L,22,36,27,38,24,26,.;n=Firebal l,24,38,4 Can it be that the dice are totally against me? | MindWandererB02-02-07, 06:41 PM | Yeah, make that 50' altitude for the sphinxes. That might make you want to reconsider that positioning. Odd... I never realized before that ACs, unlike summons, can plop the critter directly into midair. Also, you have to move directly toward the opponent on a charge. If they have higher altitude than you by more than 5', it's therefore impossible unless you have perfect maneuverability. Anything else I handle "differently" is probably due to error, not intent. Feel free to check my work on the poor-maneuverability flying; it's a pain in the butt to figure out. Edit: One more thing, one of the sphinxes you intended to hit with the energy ball (the one on the right) is still flying, so you won't be able to catch that one. Edit 2: Per conversation with Cat over IM, the Ball is being changed to a Missile. Thylle's astral construct appears and charges a sphinx, bludgeoning it with a fist. Thylle rides his phantom steed around the corner, blasts at three of the grounded sphinxes with fire, then runs away. The rest of the sphinxes mob the astral construct, but only one of them is able to get to it quickly enough to make an attack for now, and it does negligible damage with its bite. Uhme... Astral Construct appears and charges D. Hit 25, damage 12. Thylle rides into LOS and shoots off an overchanneled fire Energy Missile at the distant three. Concentration auto, damage 40, B and C fail saves, F succeeds. Thylle rides his phantom steed away from the battle. B pushes past C and takes to the air, moving toward the astral construct. E changes its flight path and is barely able to reach the astral construct in a single move. It attacks. 29, 10-8=2 damage. This provokes an AoO from the AC, though: 18, miss. F flies under D, but isn't fast enough to be able to attack. C flies over E, and is similarly out of movement. It is Uhme's turn. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=city;a=Uhme,M,21,19,Uhm e;b=Thyl,L,5,4,Thylle;c=Gnom,S,21,38,22, 37,21,36,Gnomes;d=HSAC,L,21,21,21,28,20, 26,Hieracospinxes A-C;e=HSDF,L,23,26,21,26,23,25,Hieracosphi nxes D-F;f=AsCo,L,22,24,Astral Construct V Hieracosphinx A 67/67 hp, altitude 50' Hieracosphinx D 55/67 hp, altitude 50' Astral Construct 66/68 hp, altitude 50' Thylle 29/29 hp, 37/55 PP, Inertial Armor +8 (long). | Caterane02-03-07, 08:02 AM | "Ooh the gnomes are dead" Uhme whistled "so it seems our work here is done" - *Hoot Hoot ...HOOT* - "Oh right heh heh I totally forgot. The Sphinx then" - *sigh* The sphinx had encircled the only visible target, the astral construct and this was a great chance to try one of the most underused spells in Gladius: fireball. As soon as the flame inferno exploded around the beasts and the smoke had cleared, the symbol of sleep began to glow and caught what was left of the sphinx in its area of effect. Just to be on the safe side, Uhme moved to a position where remaining sphinx couldn't catch him. Ume casts a fireball that affects all sphinx (and sadly the AC too) for 10d6 fire damage (Reflex Dc21). He becomes visible which triggers the symbol of sleep on all sphinx (Will Dc25). He then flies north under the sphinx (he's at 30ft while the others are at 50') if there are any remaining. Note that this is the opposite direction in which the sphinx are facing. Adept my position if necessary so that they have to make a long turn if they decide to catch me. Eule then moves 5ft infront of Uhme so that it blocks the path to him should the poor flyers decide to follow and be anyhow able to reach me. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=city;a=Uhme,M,21,19,20, 62,Fireball;b=Thyl,L,5,4,Energy Missile;c=AC,L,22,24,Smashing;d=Spnx,L,2 1,21,21,28,20,26,A-C;e=Spnx,L,24,26,22,26,24,24,D-F;f=Eule,T,20,61,Hooting;n=Fireball,22,2 3,4;los=21,19,22,24,1 |
| MindWandererB02-04-07, 02:08 AM | The Elder unveils himself by throwing a fireball at all of the sphinxes, catching the astral construct as well. Although they are burned, far more dangerous is the Symbol of Sleep he reveals to them as he becomes visible. One glance at it and all of the sphinxes plummet from the skies, unconscious, and remain inert despite the undoubtedly painful fall. Uhme casts Fireball. Damage 34, saves 10 (Astral Construct), 25, 14, 10, 9, 26, 19 vs, DC 21. They all see his Symbol of Sleep, which triggers it. Saves 19, 13, 17, 24, 17, 23 vs. DC 25. Uhme then moves under the constructs, passing fortunately just beyond their reach. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=city;a=Uhme,M,26,57,Uhm e;b=Thyl,L,5,4,Thylle;c=Gnom,S,21,38,22, 37,21,36,Gnomes;d=HSAC,L,21,21,21,28,20, 26,Hieracospinxes A-C;e=HSDF,L,23,26,21,26,23,25,Hieracosphi nxes D-F;f=AsCo,L,22,24,Astral Construct V Well, that was simple. Expensive, but it doesn't really matter when you're frozen, now does it? That's an abuse of our rules, but it's certainly well within them. I'm glad I don't have to worry about that in a real D&D game. The sphinxes are yours to do with as you wish, for at least half an hour. |
| Caterane02-04-07, 07:15 AM | Hehe well yeah but I don't really benefit from that either because I gain no rewards. Anyways, the Iron Man begins soon and with it the characters thaw. Thanks a lot for running the miniquest; I think it was the first fight you ran for me; you put a lot of thought into details. I'm impressed Ben. |
| MindWandererB02-04-07, 02:20 PM | Thanks, I try, especially for quests. There's some time left for RP left if you wish it--what do do with 6 sleeping sphinxes? I should mention to you that I signed up for <one> fight for a reason. Two MQs with high-level full casters was a bit more than I bargained for--I'm teaching my first class right now, and you know how that goes. |
| Caterane02-04-07, 05:27 PM | yeah sorry I thought Leif and Uhme could do one miniquest together but then you had already opened two threads. The sphinx, hm, dinnae know. We have no trophy hall so it's pointless to keep them. But we can RP on a bit if you like. Technically they should be executed. PS: If you maximize bluff, diplomacy and intimidate, you're well prepared for your class :D Uhme, Thyle and Eule stood over the sleeping sphinx and discussed their fate. "We should not hesitate but execute them right away" Thyle urged. "But they ate the evil gnomes!" Uhme replied "Maybe they just mistook us for their allies?". The discussion went back and forth a bit until Eule intervened *Hoot hoot* and the Elders listened.... It was a good plan. Five of the beasts were killed before their slumber ended. The last one though was nursed just so that it was barely conscious and on the brink of dying. The elders then waited in hiding for the beast to awake ...and lead them right to their origins. |
| MindWandererB02-04-07, 07:48 PM | I frown on the combination of miniquests, because it lets a weaker character ride on the coattails of a stronger one, especially when one of them is one of your characters. My students don't intimidate easily... it's a for-profit school, so I have to treat them like paying customers....The stupid beast behaved exactly according to plan, and led the CEF elders straight to what appeared to be the main hideout of the Freedom Fighters. They used the opportunity to take stock of their enemies' resources, and plan a full-scale attack on the rebels. |
