| Dracazar12-11-05, 06:46 AM | I'll share the format I use to Pitlord fights. Everyone may use it. Let me say that I wish only help the CoCo. I don't want to promulgate any pseudo-official standard, I don't want to teach nothing. I like to see many differents ways to write a fight, but sometimes some are difficult to read. This template could be also useful for fresh pitlords. Feel free to give hints and criticism. Instructions to use the template: First of all read the Advanced Rules: About Pitlording, then: Copy the Template: Select all the text inside the box of next post, Copy+Paste it in your text editor Replace with Names: Use the Replace function of your editor and: Replace all occurences of Cha1 with the name of 1st Gladiator Replace all occurences of Pla1 with the name of 1st Player Replace all occurences of Cha2 with the name of 2nd Gladiator Replace all occurences of Pla2 with the name of 2nd Player Replace all occurences of Pitlord with your name Copy Characters Sheets: Click this post and find links for your gladitors Take a snapshot of gladiator's character sheet using the QUOTE button Paste the sheet in the right SBLOCK and remove the quote tags Fill race and class information and write down also HP and AC Copy the Tactics: Now you need to fill the tactics Copy the tactic received for the gladiator and paste it in the right SBLOCK Initiative: Fill the Initiative section with information from tactics Senses: Try to fill the Senses section, if it seems useless skip it for now HP and AC: Fill the Round summary section (enclosed by font tags) with HP and AC Starting positions: Now roll starting positions for you gladiators, (if you need map click here) Click here (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/) for CoCo Dice Roller, help should be in this thread Write the positions in the Initiative section and the map coordinates in the Round summary section The Round: Copy+Paste the generic Round section and rename it round 1 Remove the img tag if you don't plan to use dynamic maps from coco.php Start the fight and run the round 1 Copy+Paste Actions section from the generic Round section for next round Copy+Paste the Round summary section always from the previous round Run the fight and enjoy! |

| Dracazar12-11-05, 06:47 AM | About Dynamic Maps Everyone may use it, but remember this: 1. Please contain your fight inside sblock so browser should request images only if someone see the fight 2. The script is still in test so it may be unavailable (rare) 3. The server has limited bandwidth so it may be busy (less rare) Feel free to read the instrunctions below but I wrote also a CoCo Map TAG Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco/) to help you! Instruction for coco.php version 1.6 Example (without spaces in tags): [ IMG ]http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;a=ChaA,M,0,30;b=ChaB,M,-26,0,-15,-3,fly 20'[ /IMG ] The result is: http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;a=ChaA,M,0,30;b=ChaB,M,-26,0,-15,-3,fly 20' The variables in the example are: v=1 a=Cha1,M,0,30 b=Cha2,M,-26,0,-15,-3,fly 20' Variables for Characters are: v is the version, actually only v=1 exists map is the map (arena, cavern, dungeon, hall), arena is default map (new in v1.4) a is the 1st character, color is hardcoded in red b is the 2nd character, color is hardcoded in blue c is the 3rd character, color is hardcoded in green d is the 4th character, color is hardcoded in magenta e is the 5th character, color is hardcoded in sienna f is the 6th character, color is hardcoded in olive a, b, c, d, e, f accepts parameters separated by ,: 1st parameter is character name (4 letters, no numbers inside the name) 2nd parameter is character size, it now recognizes all sizes: S for small, M for medium, L for large and so on For size bigger than Medium the coordinate are related to upper left corner 3rd and 4th parameters are for X0 and Y0, ranges from -30 to 30 (no range check) 5th and 6th are optional X1 and Y1 for another point, a dashed line will be drawn from X0,Y0 to X1,Y1 the script accepts optional coordinates for X2,Y2 to X5,Y5 and draw dashed lines the last parameter is an optional comment (20 letters, no start with number) There are also those variables for Effects: n is for an area effect similar to Entangle, colored in lime o is for an area effect similar to Obscuring Mist, colored in gray n, o accepts parameters separated by ,: 1st parameter is effect name (8 letters, no numbers inside the name) 2nd parameter is the center of the effect, ranges from -30 to 30 (no range check) 3rd parameter is radius of the effect, measured in squares (no feet) (no check) There are also those variables for Styles: style accepts c for circle or s for square, default is c opacity accepts a number from 1 to 100, default is 100 There are also those a variable for Line of Sight: (new in v1.6) los accepts parameters separated by ,: 1rd and 2nd parameters are for X0 and Y0, ranges from -30 to 30 (no range check) 3rd and 4th parameters are for X1 and Y1, ranges from -30 to 30 (no range check) 5th parameter is for the corner of X0, Y0 (1=NE 2=SE 3=SW 4=NW) Important: Never use the symbols ? or & inside parameters A more complex example (right click->property to show url): http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;a=ChaA,M,-13,13,-13,7,fly 20';b=ChaB,L,0,10,on mount;n=Entangle,0,10,8;c=ChaC,S,22,0,15 ,3,10,0,Reduce person;d=ChaD,M,0,-4,0,-6,Total concealment;o=Mist,0,-4,4;e=Dog,M,0,-3,5,0,invisible;f=Golem,H,-12,-2,disabled Note: The correct HTTP syntax for the first example should be: coco.php?v=1&a=Cha1,M,0,30&b=Cha2,M,-26,0,-15,-3,fly 20' but the WotC board will not show inline images tag with parameters so I created a workaround on a server of mine to accept ; instead of ? and & to disguise that I'm passing variables. |

| Dracazar12-11-05, 06:48 AM | Some useful links The Rules of Gladius: Tables for XP and Gold The Rules of Gladius: Skills and Feats Still under construction... |
| Macbrea12-12-05, 06:52 AM | Actually, that might be extremely useful in doing maps. Nice coding by the way. |
| Dracazar12-12-05, 07:38 AM | Thanks Macbrea, I like write php code. I'm looking on how to improve it, for example with some parameters for spells that affects arena like entangle and obscuring mist. I'm open to other ideas too :D |
| Macbrea12-12-05, 09:26 AM | Is each of those producing a jpg and then allowing it to be seen. Thereby making it one compressed jpg file or is it producing a multi-layer jpg image that has to be pulled individual on the fly off the server? The first result is a single file that resides on your server but takes up space. The second is a bit of processing power but requires alot less server space. I am curious for bandwidth purposes. |
| Dracazar12-12-05, 11:14 AM | Each image mag is 8bit PNG format (no truecolor). I create them with GD library, compiled inside PHP. The images are generated on-the-fly, none of them is stored on the server, they are "lost" as soon as showed on the client browser. This solution consumes processor and bandwidth but no disk space. I did some update to the script, it now handles 6 character and 2 "effects". Please read instruction an try so you can beta-test it. Next step could be to work on different map. |
| DTFarstar12-12-05, 02:25 PM | I have to say this is really nice man. I'm picking up more battles this coming week and this should make things alot easier as I was having to use MSPaint before now. Thanks! |
| Macbrea12-13-05, 09:07 AM | It should be noted that there is a limit to the number of IMG times you can have in a post. I ran into it in the fight with Alexi and Kalarthus. I need to learn to combine the maps and update every 3 to 5 turns. Is there a limit on the number of iterations of moves we are allowed to place between the comment lines? In otherwords, coordinates. |
| Mal-212-13-05, 10:13 AM | There are alos those variables for Effects: n is for an area effect similar to Entangle, colored in lime o is for an area effect similar to Obscuring Mist, colored in gray n, o accepts parameters separated by ,: 1st parameter is effect name (8 letters, no numbers inside the name) 2nd parameter is the center of the effect, ranges from -30 to 30 (no range check) 3rd parameter is radius of the effect, measured in squares (no feet) (no check) I don't think your area of effects are correct. Most area spells are centered on a grid intersection, not in the center of a square. For example, Sleep (a 10' radius burst). Right: http://www.io.com/~mal2/CoCoAoE1.jpg Wrong: http://www.io.com/~mal2/CoCoAoE2.jpg There are some exceptions, mostly for emanations centered on a target. I don't remember exactly how those are supposed to be drawn, but there should be some examples in the Player's Handbook. Just for reference here's the SRD quote on Areas: The point of origin of a spell is always a grid intersection. When determining whether a given creature is within the area of a spell, count out the distance from the point of origin in squares just as you do when moving a character or when determining the range for a ranged attack. The only difference is that instead of counting from the center of one square to the center of the next, you count from intersection to intersection. You can count diagonally across a square, but remember that every second diagonal counts as 2 squares of distance. If the far edge of a square is within the spell’s area, anything within that square is within the spell’s area. If the spell’s area only touches the near edge of a square, however, anything within that square is unaffected by the spell. I know that makes things difficult on your code, since you're calculating a coordinate as the center of the square. Perhaps for Areas, you could use the upper left corner of the square, and allow coordinates for the center of an area to go one extra square off the edge of the map (to allow the center of an effect to be at the very edge). |
| Dracazar12-13-05, 12:28 PM | Thanks you Mal-2 for your intervention. You are right, the center must be the grid intersection and not the center of the square. I modified the code, as suggested by you, to consider the upper left corner of the square as the center of the area effect. Let me know if it is ok now. The code plots also the center of the effect. Now the problem could be to handle spells centered on the target, but it seems that those are a minority. |
| Dracazar12-13-05, 02:31 PM | I received some request to share the source code of the map generator. Is there more people interested? If so, we can create a small project and cooperate on it. Let me know who is interested via private message. The code is in PHP (v4.4.0) and uses GD library (v2.0.28). |
| lonewolf12-13-05, 02:33 PM | I will try to use this code on my fights this week. Anyone else thinks this should be worth credits? |
| TheMagister12-14-05, 05:39 AM | I sure do. This is light-years better than anything else I've seen here, just by virtue of its template-ness. Great job, Drac! TM |
| Caterane12-14-05, 09:21 AM | Test http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;a=Harv,M,0,-17,3,-10,harvesting http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;a=CAT,C,8,-5,casts Credit Shower IX;b=Drac,M,0,-17,3,-10,takes a shower;n=CRED,3,-10,3 Dracazar, that's just awesome! With that program everyone can create maps without having to copy, cut, modify, fill, save, upload, and post a map. This program has two effects: 1) You are rich 2) I need to take off the 2° for a supermap. Now only 1 bonus credit is issued for a map. Question: Why isn't the big red colossal monster not fully visible on the second map? |
| Macbrea12-14-05, 09:52 AM | Strange, I guess it determines it needs to only show about 2 squares around the center point of any person. In theory, there probably won't be a huge number of colosal creatures in combat. |
| Dracazar12-14-05, 10:30 AM | @Macbrea: You are perfectly right: 2 squares around the center point of any person and don't consider his size. I'll check to fix this. @Caterane: Thank you :D about 1) really? what do you mean? :thinks: about 2) Oh! I hope that people don't kill me for this  |
| KerlanRayne12-14-05, 02:05 PM | Maybe someone could make a web page with forms on it that automatically generates the html link that cou can copy and paste. KerlanRayne |
| Dracazar12-14-05, 03:14 PM | Nice idea KerlanRayne, I'll do it as soon I have some minutes. |
| Purkake12-14-05, 04:20 PM | Oh, dude! That is eevil(in a good and heartwarming way), I say make him the person of the week/month/year for the CoCo or something :D I think that a site with a nice interactive map where you could place all the gladiators and have it automatically calculate the code would be a nice thing. Anyway: Good Job! |
| Ribking12-14-05, 04:32 PM | Wow! You ROCK Drazacar! Really great stuff, man. I may even jump on to the whole Pitlord thing now. |
| Dracazar12-16-05, 05:28 PM | Please look here: http://www.hwx.it/coco/index.php I hope you like, it took several hours of coding and it is still an alpha release Give me feedback/hint/opinion Thanks |

The values listed in the generated string are not the ones that popped up when I clicked on the spots. the second one was supposed to look like this: http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;a=star,M,-26,0,26,0,one;b=bing,M,0,-26,0,26,two I manually entered the values for that one. --- Oh, and dracazar.. you fing rock !..! that is awesome, beyond awesome.. I have more to say but Im speechless right now. ----------------edit Those first ones were done on a mac 10.4.4 safari. When I ran the fight on a xp machine with IE it worked fine, but for some reason firefox will not drop the pins.. I may be missing a prefrence somewhere - its a new download from getfirefox.com that has default settings so I'm sure you can replicate that environment. [did I mention technical feedback of product performance is my day job] List of things I want more pins the pins should tell you what cord they are on. ammo pins... - designate a weapon in a different box - that allows you to identify the wielding character, and allows you to draw line of attack from the character to the other one.. does that make sense? Can I use the LOS function to do that? L(long) & L(cube) - for sizes allowpins to be ontop of each other control the colors ... duh (but low priority of course) how do you get the interface to do AoE and LOS and not just movement? ideally the map generated would not only give the pic of a line but define the distance for you as well... but it would need to be able to calculate that and it would need to be able to comprehend "up" for flyers and "down" for diggers. |
| Altaris1312-19-05, 09:10 PM | Cha1 r?=? Cha2 r?=? What is supposed to go here? By the way, Drac, this template is awesome! Moi moi bueno! |
| NiQil12-19-05, 09:15 PM | @ Dracazar: Before too many more people start using this template, I wanted to point out something. Taking 10: When your character is not being threatened or distracted, you may choose to take 10. Instead of rolling 1d20 for the skill check, calculate your result as if you had rolled a 10. For many routine tasks, taking 10 makes them automatically successful. Distractions or threats (such as combat) make it impossible for a character to take 10. In most cases, taking 10 is purely a safety measure —you know (or expect) that an average roll will succeed but fear that a poor roll might fail, so you elect to settle for the average roll (a 10). Taking 10 is especially useful in situations where a particularly high roll wouldn’t help. Since an arena is combat from round 1, the take 10 rule can't be applied. This is also the reason that the bardic song fascinate can't work in the arena. Also, since the player has to elect to take 10, unless someone writes that into their tactics, it shouldn't be done. The primary reason is that, for someone with an extremely high modifier, if the opposed roll by their opponent is really bad, a good roll would give them a chance to get a direction or pinpoint, where a take 10 would not. I know it requires a lot of extra rolls, but unfortunately it sorta comes with the pitlord territory. |
| MindWandererB12-19-05, 09:47 PM | Just a comment on emanations: you should probably make it so that emanations centered on a Large or larger character come from an intersection at or near the center of the figure. |
| Warclone12-20-05, 01:12 PM | Very nice by the way. I'd like to request that you include an option to draw a thin LOS line between characters. |
| Cerebus1312-20-05, 03:03 PM | I second Warclone on that idea. A way to display LOS lines from all corners of a square to any single corner of another square. |

| Macbrea01-01-06, 10:05 AM | Any chance for your page Map Page (http://www.hwx.it/coco/index.php?map=arena) you could add the area effects choices to the generate script? As it stands now, you would have to post the map then go back through and edit the url to add in the area effects... Unless I am missing something. |
| Macbrea01-01-06, 10:06 AM | Also, is there a reason it doesn't work in Firefox? |
| Dracazar01-01-06, 02:32 PM | Hi Macbrea, you are right the tag generator didn't supported effects... ... now effects are added to the interface :D There is still something to fix (i.e. overlapping pins) but this is better than edit url manually. For Firefox I need to install it and check, I'll give a look tomorrow. However this is strange because I didn't used strange/proprietary DHTML. |

MacOS 10.4.3 (did I say 4.4 earlier? oops) Microsoft IE 5.2.3 Pin buttons react to click but do not "attach pin to cursor" Cliking on piboard produces "internet explorer script alert" with the cords. clicking the create image and tags button give "[IMG}undefined;v=1;map=arena;style=undefi ned[/IMG}" in the tag section and no image appears. entering "http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;a=Name,M,-30,-9" into the address bar comes back with an unhandalable file type error and prompts to save/plugin/helper app ... save as creates PNG file and opens normally I have no plugin that enables Ie for png I have no helper enabled app that allows IE to open png Seems weird that the IE would be that buggy (but what can you expect with that kinda thing..rewriting a core windows prog to run in mac.. Those little colored P1s do NOT appeare below the bottom left corner of pinboard Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 Buttons react, clicking on pinboard generates alert with cords. Pins do seem to be attaching... but only appeare in the top left corner or below the bottom left corner. Pins are not appearing anywhere on the page until you click their buttons generate button does nothing at all manually entering string into address generates expected result. Appple Safari 2.0.2 (416.13) Cannot place pins (button reacts but does not then have a little P1 icon following it around the pinbboard Clicking on pinboard gives application alert and the cords clicking generate produces string text in the {img} tag block (thisin: "[IMG}http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;a=Name,M,-30,-9[/IMG}" but no image is produced (image stays the gladius port scene) Entering same string into address bar produces expected result P1 of red blue and green were visible below the bottom left corner at varius times Adobe Acrobat 7.0.5 Lagging in responces - pinboard is converted into sooo many elements (one for each square) that acrobat is just creeping along (this is a g5 btw) See windows ver 7.0.7 for more of the same failures. Apple Preview 3.0.3 (398) Cliking pinboard highlights square Too many elements are lagging performance Cannot access pulldown menu for size fields input fine. Buttons simply do not respond at all on XP 2002 sp2 Microsoft IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158 ( "6" ) Havent noticed any problems yet. Lotus Notes 6.5 Seems to work as well as IE Adobe Acrobat 7.0.7 (beta) Oh this is ugly, just ugly... Eating into system resources... (crash!!) wow.. (might be me lemee try again) working..!?! oop "button not supported in this version of acrobat" when I try to click a pin button Drop down for size works fine "LOFODCACLLMKDFCMBNKKHOLEKGKJLDOK.form1.F"... mean anything to you? The slowdown is the pinboard.. it has too many elements to be loaded correctly into acrobat's webviewer. Mozilla Firefox 1.8 Cannot place pins (Red P1 appeares in upper left corner & Blue P1 appeares just below bottom left corner of the pinboard) Clicking map poduces a program alert and gives cords. Inputing map string into the address bar gives correct map. Despite P1 appearing on pinboard there is no dot on the generated image. 3B the Broadband Browser Acts like Firefox.. ooh its a firefox build off of v1.0.7 so that makes sense. I have "flashpeak slimbrowser" on another XP machine and it seemed to work off the IE shell (noticed no probs). "advanced browser" also seemed to be an IE shell (no problems). umm, I think thats all I have for now... |
| Macbrea01-20-06, 11:40 AM | Just curious on how much work the adding of new maps will end up being for you Drac? |
| Dracazar01-22-06, 03:50 AM | First of all I would like to thank Book5 for his professional work, never seen something like that, what is your job? I'll fix problems at least for Firefox as soon as I have some free time, now I'm busy at university. Macbrea, new maps will be very easy to add because I anticipated this work with good coding that will be adaptive to any maps, the important issue is that the map share the same coodinate system of arena map or cavern/hall maps. As soon that the special map is official please inform me and I will edit the code and upload the image on the server. I would like to thanks also Mal-2 that is working on the illumination features. Last, I'll inform you that I have completed the code for the LoS feature, that will be implemented very soon. News: I'll code also a CoCo dice roller that avoids the annonyng "continue" button and implement some interesting features. This should be ready for early February... |

Macbrea, new maps will be very easy to add because I anticipated this work with good coding that will be adaptive to any maps, the important issue is that the map share the same coodinate system of arena map or cavern/hall maps.[/color] Oooh oooh I thought of something - what if you could designate an image url from photobucket and get that to just place it under the grid? Make it kinda pick or something where is gives an error if the url doesnt produce an image with the right information. Size and stuff, but another question I have is: Is it necessary for all the images to be the same size. Can't we get away with them being smaller? A smaller image would just leave "wasted" boxes beyond the edge of the image that you would presumably not use. [QUOTE=Dracazar]I would like to thanks also Mal-2 that is working on the illumination features. Thanks to both of you guys.... this is amazing! Now I just gotta find time to pitlord again! Have you thought about seeing if wotc wants something similar for the rest of the boards. Particularly if you have variable map capacity and could do some crazy sorta google letters deal.... ya know I don't even know how they do the google letters game so that might be right out. |
| Dracazar02-15-06, 09:43 AM | Some fixes to the templates in the first posts of this thread, link here |
| Book502-18-06, 07:06 PM | You should put the "results and comments" section in spoilers as well. Why? Because I see lots of fights that put the character sheets, the tactics, and the whole fight (because of the images) into sblocks... but have the results right there "on top" Basically, I like the "all sblocks" look the most. That way the battles thread loads faster (just the sblock lines and sigs) and you can search through more fights faster.. and you can just open the parts you want to look at - allowing you to save the "results" for last or not at all if thats not the part your concerned about. About the "pitlordinator" - if there was a way to complie multiple images into a single image - then we could skirt around the "15 round" limit. Dice roller on the same page as the mapper? BUENO, but the ideal situation is one image per round.. thats not gonna work. (you can make an "action" output that formats and links the rolls and everything right? - Im in the middle of learning javascript/dynamic web database programing so I have all these wacky ideas) If there was a way to input multiple sequences and have the autogenerator create a "series" of maps in one actual image file - you could double the 15 round limit or more (that being one actual image placed every 2-5 round covering the movements that happened over all the rounds). And just cause - I would still like more pins. Four anchors doesnt allow you to show some of the more complicated movements without cutting corners. 8-10 would be best I think. Does the number of pins seriously effect the programs ability to process? signifigantly increase the size? .. Hmm, "Just go download the source code and break it out in the classroom" sounds like a good idea.. I think I will! :D How do you make those pin things work anyway? |
| Biota03-02-06, 12:20 PM | # Copy Characters Sheets: Click this post and find links for your gladitors * Take the character sheet of 1st gladiator using the quote button * Paste the sheet in 1st sblock and fill race and class information * Take the character sheet of 2nd gladiator using the quote button * Paste the sheet in 3rd sblock and fill race and class information When you paste the character sheets into the fight template if you remove the [ QUOTE=PlayerName ] from the text the sheet will look like the original rather than looking like a large portion of quoted text. I think this makes the character sheets look a lot better. Biota |
| Dracazar03-12-06, 07:26 AM | General update: Some edits to the guide (also the Quote issue as asked by Biota) Linked the coco dice roller Added the Results and Comments as asked by Book5 CoCo Map Tag Generator v1.6 update: Now works with Firefox browser Added LoS form CoCo Dynamap v1.6 update: Inform the browser to store the map in cache Handle LoS |
| TaggIIV03-12-06, 11:18 AM | Wow, I never took a close look at this, but that map program is really cool! I always assumed that people who used image maps like that went through the trouble of custom creating each image. A very handy program (not to mention an aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-use interface). I look forward to using it sometime in the near future. |
| Turin03-21-06, 08:02 AM | Okay, I used the http://www.hwx.it/coco/ site to generate my maps for the first time this week (instead of manually creating the URL and putting in my fight post). I wanted to use the LoS feature, but the allowed values on the site don't match the parameters described above. I can only enter 2 characters in the "LoS A" and "LoS B" boxes, which isn't enough to do the parameters described. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? |

Fill in LOS A with "a1", LOS B with "b1" and Corner with "1" -- that will draw lines from the northeast corner of a1 to all corners of b1. |

| Dracazar04-03-06, 01:47 PM | Added a small new feature to the CoCo Battle Map Tag Generator It now has a small line that tell you the movement from previous pin, it should be useful. |
| Abyssal Stalker04-04-06, 01:56 AM | Oh man, that's great! This helps alot; listen&spot DCs, range penalties, spell ranges and of course movement! One thing, though. It allows you to move through walls, is there any way to remove this feature? (I understand that this might be difficult, since flyers can move through those squares. It's always possible to use multiple pins. Just threw this in the air when I noticed it!) |
| lonewolf04-18-06, 01:37 PM | i have a few problems with your mapgenerator, and am going to tell them even if I have no idea if it is possible to fix them: - In a multiplayer fight, if the character with the red tag dies, the remaining characters change colors(blue=> red; green=> blue) - In large multiplayer fights(especially with druids), the 6 tags are too few. I think 10 should be enough for 99% of the fights. - At the moment it is impossible to put two different tags onto the same square on the map. => If one character leaves one square, no other character can enter this square later that round. - The LOS generator only works for medium creatures atm. As I said, I have no idea if it is possible to fix those problems, but I just want to give you some feedback. |
| Book505-18-06, 06:38 AM | OK, sorry it took so long. I am kinda outa it.. medical.. medication.. delirous.. SO, I used the dice roller and the mapmaker. I used IE so I didnt run into any technical problems. I am, of course, certain there must be something wrong with the display in safari.. but that is because safari is worse than mosaic in displaying d/html correctly. So don't worry about it. My suggestions this time are purely "usablity" comments. First - this tool is sooo good. You should talk to the wotc team about having it hosted by the boards.wizards domain. Really - real adventures and some of the other game forums could really use a "virtual tabletop" Now to my suggestions, A) Any map. Ideally you should be able to designate any image file as the map for the battle. I know this is a hassle but it is a worth is a "worth it" hassle. If the mapmaker could upload any map temporarily - Questlords (and other forums) could use the mapmaker/dice roller. I guess they can already use the dice roller.. B) LOS - great! Awesome! But, the LOS function as it is now would not work with an "any map" feature. Instead of something that recognizes walls.. Nice but, what is really necesary is a distance calculator. The DC of listen and spot checks is determined by distance. I understand you would have to drop the current LOS code (because it is contingent on predefined map layouts) but any pitlord worth his/her salt can tell whether the LOS line is blocked by a wall or not. The more important question is: what is the distance between the two characters.... without having to perform an A2 + B2 = C2 on the MScalculator. Mac OS 10s don't have a built in calculator (btw). C) Mounted/Grappled. We need to be able to set two pins in one square. Mounted, grappled, ..above..., and etc. There are all these very common situations were one character and another character are in the same square... familiars? We need to be able to put pins in the same square. Two pins on top of each other - very good. D) More Pins. I still want to be able to pin very complicated patterns of movement within one map. I think 10 would be perfact. 4 is simply insufficient. E) Drop downs. For the number of characters. Both in the dice roller and the map maker. Instead of setting a defined number of characters - use the dice roller's "session" function to create "prefrences" for things like "the number of characters" involved. I was frustracted by the fact that the dice roller would only take two people - while the mapmaker takes 6. F) Session IDs. Seeing as how you have session IDs for the dice roller - it would be nice to be able to connect those session IDs to some sort of mapmaker session ID. Even if it was just a set of "session links" that were tantamount to form fill in URLs - ... wait.. delirous.... thats an astoundingly simple idea! Include a "session links" upload. - URLs only. Wich would let you add as many URLs such as ones to maps, other images, SRD quotes, ... anything that you felt was pertinant or accessory to the fight session! G) 3D and LOS. There is currently no function the recognizes the three dimensional aspect possibilities. This is actually as simple as adding a "height" Value into the character section of the mapmaker. The problem would come in if you were trying to connect the LOS feature to the three dimensional analysis. If you were to rewrite the LOS feature code... you could make it 3d .... insomuch as distance is concerned. Maybe next time I will run the mapmaker through the browser tests.. but not this time. Oh! Since I am here - I had this idea of creating a PDF of your mapmaker - so that people could use it off-line. The problem is that PDFs only accecpt javascript and "formcalc" (don't ask me any queastions about formcalc) ... so I would to create this mythical pdf I would need the code for the mapmaker and dice roller ... in javascript (if you can program in formcalc I will be immensly impressed - seeing as how noone uses it). Can that be done? |
| MindWandererB05-18-06, 03:11 PM | Small request: I just noticed that the coordinate system on the new maps has (1,1) in the top left corner, whereas all the other maps have it in the lower left. When you update to the new maps, can you make it consistent please? Thanks! |
