| SnarkHunter03-04-04, 02:34 PM | Update! I figured the 1st post would be the best place to put this. Here's the roster as it stands: DM's: ME, Katt, ToK, Caterane. ME(Johnny Nails) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&perpage=1&postid= 3916362#post 3916362) Jindl(Elan psion) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&perpage=1&postid= 3916274#post 3916274) Druid Roxors(Viciocelis ) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&perpage=1&postid= 3916556#post 3916556) LL Madcow(Kyuryu Senshi) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&perpage=1&postid= 3994133#post 3994133) KerlanRayne(Big Half-giant thing.) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&perpage=1&postid= 3953026#post 3953026) Magagymo(Stuertevant) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&perpage=1&postid= 3918207#post 3918207) Kattattack(Rinakith) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&perpage=1&postid= 3937953#post 3937953) ToK(Silencius) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&perpage=1&postid= 3960455#post 3960455) If anyone who's on wants to get off let me know. We have one open spot, if it is not filled by Sunday, I'll take it. If at all posisble I'd like all other characters (LL, I'm looking at you!)posted then. Winners will fight winners in this format ___ |____ ___| | |____ ___ | | |____| | ___| | |_____ ___ | |____ | ___| | | |____| ___ | |____| ___| It is worth noting that opponents in the winner's brackets will still be selected randomly-that is you won't necessarily fight the person beneath you. *no challenges* Specific Rule changes: There will be exactly 10 rounds in between fights. During those rounds you can take no actions except healing actions. No other buffs (including geting temp. Hp) are allowed. Negative spells (Melf's acid arrow) end at the conclusion of the fight but other spells or effects remain and could concievably extend to the next round's fights. Consider at least one potion of Lesser Restoration for instance. You may have equipment or allies that you will not bring into the arena. You can freely swith between this for various fight is you should win. No spells are prememed before the 1st fight but none can change afterwards. Psionic characters may spend one or more of the rounds (or their move actions if the possess the feat) in between fights attempting to regain psionic focus. Sundered items are not returned to the winner. Everything else as the CoCo. Original proposal: The first fight goes pretty much as one would expect. Losers die and winners live. But. They don't level. They don't heal. They get no used spells or items back. They go immediatly to the next round of fighting. Continue for as long as people want, or until only one survives. I think this could be fun because it may well turn the standard power builds on their head. A wizard might destroy the fighter barabarian 1st round but when he's out of spells and trying to get them with a dagger its a different story all together. there would be a few things to figure out of course, would spell's durations continue from one fight to the next? Should we make all new combatants or just use the ones in the old thread. What level characters should we use or could we even have different levels. I'm curious for anyone elses thoughts. Edit: To clarify. The way I see this working is that every one would start as say-10th level characters. You do not level when you win your fight! Next week, survivors fight each other, in the same state as they won the last time. Repeat as necessary. |
| Caterane03-04-04, 04:14 PM | Why not make the long planned prestige fights out of it? We take the lvl 13s who are frozen anyway. We planned to wait until 12 are lvl 13, so we begin the Iron tournament until the last 4 arrive. Items are used up as normal but there has to be a prize to win (a prize per fight). That shouldn`t be money but perhaps a small bonus or an entry somewhere? Don`t know. Creating entirely new characters is not a good idea. |
| kattattack2203-04-04, 04:18 PM | Awesome idea. Some people may not like they once they lose they are out so maybe something like losers are revived and start a new tournament, but that could get messy. IMO, even if I lost the first round and that was it; I still think it would be fun to try. Chacters would need to be about mid level, at least lv 6 for it to last more than a few weeks. Espeically since there is no leveling some builds won't acheive their full power at low levels. I would recommend lvs 7-10 so builds can 'realize' whatever their goal is like a grappling monk or a level in a prestige class. (EDIT: I wrote this before the edit was up but my thoughts on the matter anyway) Also, with the proliferation of moderators it would give people some extra fights to moderate. Then for those of us that don't have the time to a chance for a second character. |
| kattattack2203-04-04, 04:43 PM | Originally posted by Caterane Creating entirely new characters is not a good idea. True, its more work, but for this type of tournament you need a different type of gladiator. This places a lot more emphasis on the durable items that go from fight to fight as opposed to the cheaper one-shot items. |
| Magagumo03-04-04, 06:46 PM | Have to give kat that one, I know Brackin would suffer heavily in that fight, and I don't want to cripple Bruno by having him participate in side events. Besides, we can have fun trying ECLs far greater than the creds we could earn! :-D Bah, but I need to be able to make a 12th level character for that to really be fun. @Snark I wonder if perhaps allowing a person to heal one day's worth of hp between fights would be fair? Just so we can avoid ultimate spite... It would be nice to not be running at -7, just because your opponent died before you did, you know? |
| kattattack2203-04-04, 07:51 PM | I wonder if perhaps allowing a person to heal one day's worth of hp between fights would be fair? Just so we can avoid ultimate spite... It would be nice to not be running at -7, just because your opponent died before you did, you know? Ooo, good point. Might say the same for ability damage otherwise that could get real nasty. |
| Tellish_of_Ket03-04-04, 10:25 PM | If we're gonna simulate real gladiatorialness, such as one fight after the other, then why not make an hour pause in between each fight. That way if you are at -3 and won, you could have up to 6 or 7 hours before you're next fight to stabalize and regain concsiousness. Otherwise, sadly, you pass away and the next opponent gets a bye. :) This way also the order in which you fight will be important. So assume our model has 8 gladiators participating; A vs B C vs D E vs F G vs H A wins but is reduced to -7 C wins easily E wins and has several buffs up and running G also wins and has a few buffs up. 3 hours pass and A has not stabilized and goes to -10. C gets a bye round. E and G now have only 1 hour taken off their buffs, because A didn't stabilize and died, giving C a bye and thus no hour delay after the fight, it just moves right on toward the next fight. E beats G and still has his buffs running. Another hour goes by and he loses a buff or two and then has to fight C, who's had 2 hours to prepare and E only 1 fight for the championship. Last man standing wins. Of course new gladiators would be in order and created specifically for this event. Reserving it to the current roster of 13th/12th is too much elitism for my stomach to handle. This should be open to all participants. -ToK |
| Mustadio[MoF]03-04-04, 10:37 PM | sounds fun to me |
| Arstimis03-04-04, 10:40 PM | Why dont we make a whole new roster, of whole new characters, all starting at a lower level. Follow all of Tellish's good suggestions, but after each fight you win, you gain a level.....maybe...maybe not |
| kattattack2203-05-04, 02:23 AM | No, no leveling after the fight. That destroys the purpose of building a durable gladiator. The hour between fights does have some advantages especially for casters with extend spell feat and does settle the negative HP problems. Sounds good. |
| Caterane03-05-04, 06:32 AM | I would still like to see only existing gladiators included else the competitive element is missing. Who cares about a one-shot-gladiator. I have an idea though. When we reach level 20 we don`t know how to proceed anyway so why not wait until some are at this level and then make this Iron Man tournament, with all arena rules. We won`t get this Iron Man tournament ready anytime soon anyway so let`s just wait a bit longer and prepare this so that we`re ready when the first lvl 20s arive. Level 20 characters are more durable and can fight several matches without refreshing. The name would also be more fitting for this level than lvl 6. The winner gets a title which is something unique in the Arena. Or another reward idea: In our new "Core Coliseum World" project the Iron Man winner gets something cool, perhaps a castle? A wizards tower? A street named after him? The options are endless. |
| kattattack2203-05-04, 02:25 PM | I really like the idea for a non-monetary reward. Its hard to explain where your character lives in the town w/ no name and that you only spend money on fight stuff. It would help make the COCO seem like a real place. I have said it once and I will say it again. A different type of trouney requires a different type of gladiator. Besides, making characters is fun. In almost 2 years of gaming I have created 30 plus characters. I always have new concepts. Having an alternative gladiator tournament helps facilitate that. We could have fresh new ideas come out of it. Especially if we start ~lv 10 the possiblities with monster builds would be very interesting. It gives those who aren't moderators a chance to try some different ideas like monster builds and higher LA characters. Those that have Prestige Class builds won't have to wait for weeks on end before they are at their optium level. The same characters are just going to cut it. Plus, it would be kind of boring to see the same characters dueling it out in a different venue. I do believe that is one of the reasons for the current freeze at level 13 is that the older more successful characters have fought the same characters 2 or 3 times and there is no new blood. New characters are the way to go here for some creative excerise in character creation, interesting new ideas, and not just to have COCO part 2 but COCO Iron Gladiator. |
| Caterane03-05-04, 02:34 PM | The problem is that we have already all hands full with one roster/one tournament. It is not just "post a character and go" but that`s a hell of work. There`s still so much to explore in the tournament that there is no need to open a seperate "Iron Man" branch. But it could be a new interesting event once we are lvl 20, and there are no new ways to go with our beloved character who we led for so long. Now imagine how now lazy fat Bruno and Co will jump up and take up the spellbook again if there`s a title or a location to win... Its hard to explain where your character lives in the town w/ no name There will be soon an entire town with many locations and filled with thousands of characters... LLMadCow is just working on the map to the city while I am working on the characters who inhabit it. Even Ony gets his room :) (and if you wish his whole family too) |
| SnarkHunter03-05-04, 02:38 PM | I too am in favor of creating new characters. Of course Cat if you desire you could just transplant a 10th level version of one of your harvesters. I have no doubt he would be most effective. As far as time between the match goes-well-I'm of two minds. IF someone manages to play a low ECL creature with fast healing or regeneration, well, they'll have a huge advantage already but it would only increase the longer the time between fights is. But While this arena definitly does not favor the buff artist, if they're buffs last from fight to fight-they might have an unfair advantage. How does 1 minute (10 full rounds) from the end of the last fight to the start of the next sound? No actions of any sort as far as healing or what have you could be taken in that time. This would mean short duration spells (improved invis, displacement) would end or be almost ended but medium and long should still be up. Hmmm, I wonder how well a vampire would do in this style arena.... |
| kattattack2203-05-04, 02:42 PM | I realize, it would be more work. I am just saying that it would be worth it if we ever did do COCO Iron Gladiator. If the work involved is the major barrier, we could limit it to 1 active character in either tournament, not both (unless you are mod then it depends on the credit system). In effect, still have 1 player, 1 active character. I would be willing to do this for awhile, but not sure about others. Originally posted by Caterane There will be soon an entire town with many locations and filled with thousands of characters... LLMadCow is just working on the map to the city while I am working on the characters who inhabit it. Here I was thinking about opening a world building thread where people could debate on the city name, tavern names, etc. If you two want help LMK. |

So to keep fast healers from totally regaining all their HP you would have to keep at some minutes length. It would still resolve the negative HP problem following ToK idea. It sounds good idea (until someone brings up a new point that will make me change my mind again on this issue :P). | Moherajikuyx03-05-04, 03:32 PM | Hey Iron likes the Iron thing!! ;D I can't wait. why don't we just start it? Let's do without fight masters (sigh), with everyone guiding his pc! I think that anyone can enter, no need to be of the same level, let's just have fun! |
| ^Rayne^03-05-04, 03:54 PM | I like Cat's idea on this one of waiting till there are a number of characters who are 20th level and then running the Iron man match. Wait till a group of say 16 gladiators have made it to 20. Then run the iron man match till one gladiator is left standing. That number is high enough to give many gladiator's the opportunity to make it up to that level and since Mo and others don't want to use Epic levels beyond this then PC's can fight their way from there in the ultimate challenge. I like the 10 rounds between matches idea the best. An hour seems too long to me, but 10 rounds (1 minute) seems fair enough to give between the matches. I agree that the winner of this ultimate fight should get a special honor from the CoCo board all time list. Anyone who wins this has shown they have created the ultimate gladiator. Not only can this gladiator survive a round or two of well prepared fights but this gladiator shows versatility and the ability to outlast other fighting styles. This sounds like an awesome idea for level 20 PC's. It sort of puts a nice finality to their exhistance in the Arena sport. :) |

Let's do without fight masters (sigh), with everyone guiding his pc! :mymy: Now you surprise me again! I thought you would stick to the CoCo as it is and not open a new one. Because that is exactly what it is: a new arena that runs parallel to ours and takes away the emphasize. I really don`t like the idea. What I do like is to add the Iron Man tournament as the ultimate final to the level 20 gladiators as Rayne just explained. That way we can determine the Arena champion, which is the better way than just saying the first lvl 20 char gets it. I think that anyone can enter, no need to be of the same level, let's just have fun! 1st Harvester challenges Aiki ...again |

How do you propose to have people guiding their PC's? Set up a time and chat room or something? What are everyone else's opinions on this? I think Caterane, Snark, ^Rayne^, and I have made very clear stances on how we would like to see it done. |
| Moherajikuyx03-06-04, 03:59 AM | You can see an example of what I mean here: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=176334&goto=lastpost Basically, the fight master is still there (Draidden in that case) but he's got only checking powers. The good thing is that we wouldn't have to wait a minimum of 7 weeks (with no freezes) :banghead: |
| kattattack2203-06-04, 02:29 PM | It could work if everyone is a compulsive checker like I am. My guess would be that use of online roller would be required or do we trust each other enough for the honor system? |
| ^Rayne^03-06-04, 03:04 PM | The system Mo has shown takes months to run. I love those boards and I participate in them on a regular basis but the game he is pointing to takes FOREVER to run (I should know I'm in the one he linked to). We've been in that tournament for over a month now and we just got to the 3rd round. Also no matter what if such a method were used a Dice Roller should be REQUIRED. Some people may be honorable when it comes to dice rolls but there are a lot of people who are not honest and the Dice Roller eliminates all uncertainty. I still think this iron man competition should be used for the first 16 players who get to 20th level to have a battle royal determining which mighty gladiator is the mightiest of them all. Rayne |
| kattattack2203-06-04, 03:53 PM | And waiting for the first 16 players to reach lv 20 won't take months? I still think it should be like another arena with its own roster, characters starting ~ECL 10, time inbetween a minute or two game time inbetween fights. People running their own gladiators sounded cool, but if it going to take forever I am in favor of people writing tatics and sending them to someone to run the fight. |
| MotherBast03-06-04, 04:13 PM | Why don't yall just do both? do a mini Iron man match with level 10s, just to test the format. It will surly take a few turneys to decide the best way to go about everything. By the time the kinks are worked out, the gladiators will have reached level 20, and the Real Iron Man can be decided. |
| kattattack2203-06-04, 05:55 PM | Originally posted by MotherBast Why don't yall just do both? do a mini Iron man match with level 10s, just to test the format. Sounds good to me. |
| SnarkHunter03-07-04, 02:47 PM | Indeed it sounds good to me as well. Maybe after the 10th level one we can try a fight at 15...hmm... |
| Magagumo03-07-04, 03:33 PM | 10th huh? I suppose I can deal with that *looks longingly at ECL 12 character*... ;) |
| kattattack2203-07-04, 03:48 PM | I am okay with ECL 12 or 15 characters if people would rather do that. 10 seemed high enough to get durable characters and low enough not to be too complicated starting out, but I don't really care. |
| kattattack2203-09-04, 01:19 AM | Okay, I don't want this idea do die here. How about opening one of those nifty new polls to decide on holding a trial run on the Iron Gladiator Tourney and ECL to run it at? I think everyone else in pretty much in accordance with 1 minute between fights. |
| SnarkHunter03-09-04, 01:31 AM | Ok, I'll give it a shot I will... Edit: Looks like that's fight master only domain there. Jindl? Cat? IF you wouldn't mind? Maybe with something like the following; Iron Thing! Vote for the option you most agree with! Do you think we should never have an Iron Man tournament? Do you think we should have an Iron man tournament when the Arena characters reach 20th level? Do you think we should have the above, and an Iron Man tournament now with new 10th ECL characters? Do you think we should have the above, and an Iron Man tournament now with new 15th ECL characters? Also just so everyones clear on what having a seperate tourny thread would entail. We would still need volunteer Mods, in addition to any moddibg you do in the main event. If we get a lot of characters but no Mods well thats a load of poo right there. So if people intrested in this event could also post in the vote thread, that they were or were not intrested in modding 1 fight, I would really appreciate that. Thanks all! |
| Caterane03-09-04, 11:56 AM | I`m not sure if this is a Council of Elders poll since it doesn`t affect game balance or rules clarifications. It would be better suited for an open poll. Anyway, I don`t want to have two polls running at one time for several reasons: First of all, people should focus on one poll. It`s not just clicking on yes or no but they should familiarize themselves with the topic. Since I have to assume that everyone is doing this I don`t want to give ppl too much workload, else they might skip the familiarizing and just vote absendmindly. Then, I don`t want the polls to become a hype and everyone cries for polls just because they`re not sure about Kiowen`s eagle (sorry ;)). Therefore, only one poll will be active at a single time. Another point is to see how the first (prototype) poll is developing. We can learn much from existing polls. Let`s give us the time to do so. Also, right now, there are 23 votes but only 18 have confirmed to do so. Some in the list might not have made a post but I have to assume that this comes from another sources which disturbs me a bit. And lastly, I don`t want to split my concentration between several polls. The INA poll is being closed on march 16th. |
| SnarkHunter03-09-04, 01:04 PM | Fair enough, I did intend to have this as an open poll, but your reasoning is sound. As it I'm only perturbed because I won't be here most of next week (I'll be leaving Sunday, returning late Friday), so I wanted to be here to develope the poll. |
| Caterane03-09-04, 01:09 PM | No problem, Snark, we`re not in a hurry |
| kattattack2203-18-04, 10:33 PM | Weren't we going to vote on how to do Iron Man thing a while ago? |
| SnarkHunter03-20-04, 01:05 AM | Yeah I seem to recall. And the INA poll is well concluded! Of course there is a new poll going on now but I really don't see why we should only have one running at a time especially when one of them is not at all rules related... |
| Jindl03-20-04, 01:29 AM | @Snark - PM / email me with exactly what you want the poll to ask (including the possible choices) and I will open it on Tuesday, when I close the copying spells poll. -Jindl |
| SnarkHunter03-20-04, 02:10 AM | Sent. Oh and some further thoughts; since after their first fight the whole of a prepared caster's spell list would be known, how would people feel about not revealing half the spells before the fight? I'm just tossing it out there-informally like. |
| kattattack2203-20-04, 04:48 AM | I'm fine with it as long as the spells in the spellbook are still listed. Half of what people have memorized doesn't reveal all that much anyway or people are just good at hiding what spells they prepare even with showing half. (Not sure if any of that last sentence made sense.) |
| PostalBoy03-24-04, 07:11 PM | Reposting my thoughts from the Poll thread 1) How about resurections can be performed, but standard resurection costs apply. But once you die, you cannot participate further in the tourney. 2) Iron Man Fight carries a purse of 1,000g per combatant entered, and the total purse will be divided among the top 3 or 5 combatants. 3) Experience would be awarded normally. Meaning that you would get the XP listed for defeating an opponent of said CR. At the end of the tourney add up your total XP and determine what level you should be, then it's back to the standard one level per win. 4) Allow healing and buffing actions during the 10 round delay between fights. 5) A dispell magic will be cast on each opponent as they leave the Coliseum. This would use one of the rounds of the 10 round delay. Whats the fun of risking perm death if you dont get levels or gold? For that matter who wants to risk perm death? |
| SnarkHunter03-24-04, 07:56 PM | Reasons permanent death is ok; Since everyone would be making all new (or at least extrapolated) characters who would, I reiterate, not be fighting in the standard arena death would be...obnoxious. That is, a good 2 or 3 hours of character creation gone, but not devastating-you haven't invested 6 months in the character. And for the 20th level fight-well not many people are eager to go to epic levels so dying here would only signify relative rank. A fighting end and an apt comparison with everyone else at that level. However this concept hinges on the assumption that it would be a one time event. After the Iron man concluded return to reguarly scheduled broadcasting. IF this catches on though, we might want to work out something like you envision to see how advancement would work. I think giving raw experiance might be a bad idea since that could just be fodder for crafters... and really we don't need to make em any stronger neh? 4: I worry this might favor healers (clerics particuarly) overly much since they would have access to the most efficent healing. 5: Why allow buffing if your going to dispell the old ones? But I don't think allowing them to get replaced with the more powerful but shorter term ones is a great idea. This would seem to favor casters to much, since they have access to the most efficent buffs. Aye...talking is fun. Although I really should consider writting that english paper... |
| PostalBoy03-24-04, 08:03 PM | I'm a bit confused now. The Iron Man Challange would be using a new character created at 10th, 15th or 20th level, and not in any way related to our COCO character? |
| SnarkHunter03-24-04, 10:13 PM | Well I've got 2 pages done, and their not even doublespaced yet! So; The 10th or 15th ECL Tourny would be new characters. The 20th level fight would be the first 12 or 16 gladiators of the regular COCO arena to reach 20th level. There they would fight out in this most grueling of competetions to settle who would be the true Arena Champion. Make sense? I understand if not! But in anycase the test Iron man (at 10th or 15th) would not have any inpact on our 'real' gladiators. |
| PostalBoy03-24-04, 10:21 PM | Yea, in that case the suggestions I made do sound rather silly. Heh, I thought that this would be something that we could opt into with our current COCO builds. Makes MUCH more sense now. |
| PostalBoy03-24-04, 10:21 PM | Yea, in that case the suggestions I made do sound rather silly. Heh, I thought that this would be something that we could opt into with our current COCO builds. Makes MUCH more sense now. |
| SnarkHunter04-01-04, 12:30 AM | So...its been a week. I guess the poll is closed, and the results well. I do find them satisfactory. I hope everyone else does as well. Maybe over the weekend we can work out more of the nitty gritty stuff. |
| SnarkHunter07-10-04, 12:13 AM | Well its three months later and I have an itch. I'm gonna start working on an ECL 10 character right now. I'll need 3 others from other players. I'll also need 1 volunteer DM. If you want to DM and fight then I may need two Volunteer DM's so that I won't be modding my own character. First come first killed...err served ;) This is a limited test of the Iron Man concept; The results of fights here will not reflect on the fights in the Core Arena. Way it will work: 8 gladiators will be assigned one on one fights. Winner's fight winners. No spells are regained, PP's regenerated, or any of the like after your battle conclude. IF you win, you will have 10 rounds inbetween fights, during which you can do nothing but all negative effects (melf's acid arrow, fatigue, etc. )will resolve or be dispelled from the previous fight. If I find this to be generally acceptable then we'll move on to a larger pool of gladiators higher ECL characters or both. Post any characters, questions or suggestions here. |
| Jindl07-10-04, 12:32 AM | @Snark - Okay, you're in charge of running this thing (admin wise). I'd like to put in one of the other contenders. I'll post my build soon. I would suggest that we put everything on this thread, rather than the normal gladiators/fights threads. Since this is something of a one-shot test, we could put all four gladiators, then post the fight, all on the same thread. What do you think? -Jindl |

If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the animal companion if the companion moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the animal again, even if it returns to the druid before the duration expires. Additionally, the ranger may cast a spell with a target of “You” on her animal companion (as a touch range spell) instead of on herself. A ranger and her animal companion can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion's type (animal). |
| LLMadCow07-10-04, 04:34 AM | Phooey on you guys that you get back into this and then close it off! I would love to participate! If you decide to expand it, I would love to get in. Also, I haven't looked over everything, but are you limisting people to 1 character per player? Otherwise players could have their 2 characters fighting! |
| KerlanRayne07-10-04, 04:36 AM | Well, I only count three characters, so I'll be number four unless I missed someone. [EDIT] Dang it LL, you just slipped past me. Oh Well. KerlanRayne |
| Jindl07-10-04, 10:25 AM | @Snark - With all the interest, lets do 8 pc's. Limit 1 per player. That way, the winner would have to win 3 fights, if we used a bracket like this: ___ |____ ___| | |____ ___ | | |____| | ___| | |_____ ___ | |____ | ___| | | |____| ___ | |____| ___| Or were you planning to throw them all in one room as a free-for-all? Since more players obviously means more work for the pitlord, I would suggest just extending the duration of the tourney to take longer than a single weekend. What do you think? -Jindl |

| LLMadCow07-10-04, 11:08 AM | @Snark - Can you please post the exact guidelines? What are we doing - Lvl 10, everything else just like the arena? (Would you consider doing ECL 15 since we have yet to see that in the arena?) Are players allowed to have more items than they bring into the arena, and have access to them in between fights to change out weapons and/or equipment? If there are 10 rounds between fights, does extended buffs, such as Mage armor, simply lose 10 rounds off of their time remaining? Sine there are 3 rounds of fights, why not let this take 3 weeks? That way it runs along side the regular fights and allows time for tactics and such to be done. Now that I think about it, with the 10 round rule, you could allow players to do anything they could pull off in ten rounds. Drink 10 potions, heal some, equip basic armor, with the help of another, etc. There are endless possibilities, but some may want to be limited. If players are not allowed to swap items in between rounds, is it fair to the character who just had his potions shattered in a shatter spell? Or the Wizard who had is wand destroyed? Or the dead mount/ally? I'll have more thoughts later... |
| SnarkHunter07-10-04, 11:55 AM | Originally posted by LLMadCow @Snark - Can you please post the exact guidelines? What are we doing - Lvl 10, everything else just like the arena? (Would you consider doing ECL 15 since we have yet to see that in the arena?) We'll probably do an ECL 15 if this is successful and enjoyable. Are players allowed to have more items than they bring into the arena, and have access to them in between fights to change out weapons and/or equipment? That sounds acceptable-but anything sundered, killed or used would of course not be repaired or returned. If there are 10 rounds between fights, does extended buffs, such as Mage armor, simply lose 10 rounds off of their time remaining?Correct, so long term buffs (minutes or hours) would be still going strong, but /rounds would probably have expired. And many potions would not last as well. Sine there are 3 rounds of fights, why not let this take 3 weeks? That way it runs along side the regular fights and allows time for tactics and such to be done.Definitly. This week will just be reviewing characters, and hammering out final rules I suspect. Though if we can get 8 by Wednesday I might as well pair them. Now that I think about it, with the 10 round rule, you could allow players to do anything they could pull off in ten rounds. Drink 10 potions, heal some, equip basic armor, with the help of another, etc. There are endless possibilities, but some may want to be limited. I for one would find that a might confusing. I like the thought a little better of: immediatly after the fight everyones wrapped in Irons and tossed into the next pit over... A little less paperwork to keep track of too. If players are not allowed to swap items in between rounds, is it fair to the character who just had his potions shattered in a shatter spell? Or the Wizard who had is wand destroyed? Or the dead mount/ally? I think players could swap items but that would be the end of it. The point of this little exercise is that fights are mean nasty things. A sunderer would be a feared foe indeed if even when you win...you lose. And I think upping the tension level a little bit would be rather fun, neh? I'll have more thoughts later... Cool I look forward to hearing them. |
| LLMadCow07-10-04, 12:06 PM | So can I start on an ECL 15 build? I have to dash off to work, but have time during the day to do some...? |
| Magagumo07-10-04, 12:08 PM | Actually, Snark, the rounds 10 of healing, etc (no buffing spells, healing only) would be a fair addition, honestly. It keeps the combatants semi-fresh (because otherwise this is going to end fast when you only have 5 hp for your next match...) Provided you keep it only to healing, this allows clerics to restore the hp they couldn't fix mid-combat, and prevents Fast Healing (albiet rare) from completely dominating. Also, it supports those smart enough to bring in a brace of potions and leaving them outside the arena- no sundering or shatter, and they get to recoup before the next bout. Not too different from the boxer's rest time given between rounds, neh? |
| SnarkHunter07-10-04, 12:56 PM | Originally posted by LLMadCow So can I start on an ECL 15 build? I have to dash off to work, but have time during the day to do some...? Sure-feel free too, but I'd rather you didn't post it here until we finish this round. |
| kattattack2207-10-04, 04:04 PM | Do you still need PC's for this first round? |
| ^Rayne^07-10-04, 04:55 PM | Not that I want to throw a wrench into the works because I am interested in throwing a PC into the match but I would prefer a more interactive approach similar to the one Mo linked to ages ago. The Pitlord in this case supervises the match and makes sure players make by the rule moves but all moves are made by players on a round by round basis and the Pitlord keeps a map with updated information for the beginning of each round. If two players and the Pitlord are active and around a match could go by fairly quickly and require much less work by the Pitlord and allow for the players to respond on the fly rather than write out lengthy tactics that don't always work in the situations that arrise. Is this a possibility here or am I asking the wrong crew? If it isn't possible then I would like to start a separate game where this is the method of play. I was also thinking it might be more fun to run Gladiator pairs instead of one on one matches. Anyone up for that? |
| SnarkHunter07-10-04, 06:21 PM | @katt: yes by my reckoning we have 2 or three spots available (2 if LL would like to enter a character). @Rayne: Its a nice idea (Teams of gladiators would be fun) but for now I'd like to keep this as traditional as possible. Also, I recall the Cauchemar fight-it took quite some time to finish, and with this many players I fear it would be quite unweildy. |
| kattattack2207-10-04, 06:35 PM | Woo hoo! I'll make a character and post him/her here later on then. |
| Ashenai07-10-04, 06:56 PM | I'd also be interested in posting a character, that okay? |

| Jindl07-11-04, 12:16 AM | @Snark - They are listed as both +0 and +1. Has there been any errata? How do we know which is correct? [EDIT] Thanks Kerlan. I'll prolly be changing race, as I don't intend to sacrifice a manifester level. Perhaps the overdone grey elf... -Jindl |

| SnarkHunter07-16-04, 11:21 PM | Hey I've edited the 1st post of the thread to reflect 'final' rules and the state of the roster and pairings and what have you. Just FYI. |
| Caterane07-16-04, 11:38 PM | I have to admit that I like this idea more than I initially thought I would. One of the reasons for me changing my mind about this is that we have no pitlord shortage. Infact, we even have more pitlords than fights so if anyone wants to earn more credits, he can volunteer to moderate a fight here. I'm sure either Jindl and/or Tellish are also in favor to grant credits for pitlording the Iron Man so why not ask the others in the Tavern? Good luck to everyone! |
| SnarkHunter07-16-04, 11:42 PM | Cool, thanks Cat, that'll certainly sweeten the deal for the credit hungry out there :). |
| Tellish_of_Ket07-17-04, 10:04 AM | Looking at the roster on the first page we still need 3 characters. LL hasn't been around for awhile, there is an open slot and DruidRox hasn't posted his either. I would suggest that the last 3 slots go to a "first post, first serve" basis to get the show on the road. -ToK |
| Druid Roxors07-17-04, 12:04 PM | My character is almost Ready (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=3916556#post3916556) Snark should post a Deadline to make sure this begins pronto. |
| SnarkHunter07-17-04, 01:08 PM | I did, its Sunday. Hmm so if LL isn't posting we'll have two spots open. |
| Jindl07-17-04, 01:23 PM | Originally posted by Caterane Infact, we even have more pitlords than fights so if anyone wants to earn more credits, he can volunteer to moderate a fight here. I'm sure either Jindl and/or Tellish are also in favor to grant credits for pitlording the Iron Man so why not ask the others in the Tavern? Agreed. Every fight pitlorded here will count as a fight pitlorded in the CoCo, and will therefore be worth a credit. Gladiators in this tourney do not count as "active PC's" in the CoCo. -Jindl |
| Druid Roxors07-17-04, 02:51 PM | Whoa ToK... Silencius has a grotesque Reflex save! How in the world did you get it that high!? I bet no mage will ever try to use AoE on you... Refl +187 (+7 clr, +8dex, +1 racial) :P |

| SnarkHunter07-19-04, 06:44 PM | Request! Would any of the existing gladiators be willing to post two characters? The pairing need to be even to be fair, and I'd hate to go down to four on account of being one short. Its unlikely you'll face eachother in the final match, given the nature of the fights but if it looks like that could happen, well, we can work some thing out. Of course we can avoid all this if any one else out there would be willing to post a character! |

| Jindl07-19-04, 08:10 PM | @LL - FYI: Dienonychuses are now Medium sized (they've been errata'd). Check the WoTC website for the 3.5 MM errata. The good news is that you can wear equipment in hybrid form (since you remain medium). The bad news is that your natural attacks had their damage scaled down a little. -Jindl |
| SnarkHunter07-19-04, 11:41 PM | Yay! 8 players! *dances* Oh wait, I suppose I should post my character shouldn't I... *runs off* |
| Tellish_of_Ket07-20-04, 12:29 AM | Can we issue challenges as our first round opponent? Since i'm a sly rogue i wanna beat on a helpless old lady. :) I would like to challenge Granny. :) -ToK |
| SnarkHunter07-20-04, 12:31 AM | Nope nope nope. I want this as random as possible. |
| LLMadCow07-20-04, 10:53 AM | What is the ruling on buffs? How long do they have to be in effect to enter combat with it active? |
| SnarkHunter07-20-04, 11:31 AM | 16 hours as normal for your first round of fights. After that anything that survives the fight and the 10 rounds inbetween could still be active. Btw, the beginings of my gladiator are up. Still just the skeleton at the moment. |
| Beldin07-20-04, 12:20 PM | Snark, your skeleton looks exactly like a new coco gladiator i was planning to create for the next week' pairings! |
| SnarkHunter07-20-04, 12:32 PM | Well great minds think alike... |
| SnarkHunter07-22-04, 07:55 PM | Pairings postponed till next week. Sorry. |
| Tellish_of_Ket07-27-04, 11:42 PM | After the longweekend and after the forum update i'm assuming? -ToK |
| SnarkHunter07-28-04, 03:32 AM | Le sigh yes. And possibly after City of Heroes stops being so addictive |
| kattattack2207-28-04, 07:36 PM | When exactly would this be? I am gone on vacation from August 5 to 13 and internet access will virtually non-existant for me. |
| KerlanRayne08-17-04, 01:36 AM | Originally posted by kattattack22 When exactly would this be? I am gone on vacation from August 5 to 13 and internet access will virtually non-existant for me. Well now that Katt's back and Snark is settling in, can we revive this thing and get it going? KerlanRayne |
| kattattack2208-17-04, 01:48 PM | I second KerlanRayne. Just let me know when we want to get this going. I'm back and shouldn't have anything to delay us further. |
| KerlanRayne08-18-04, 05:28 AM | Everyone needs to make sure their characters are completely finished. Looks like Snark (Shame on you) and Jindl (Remember the +1 LA) have the most work to do. Everyone else should try and check for errors in the competition. KerlanRayne |
