Character Background:
Popular since his first days, Legion has always been able to sway others to his point of view. This made his early days easy, and so Legion spent them studying and learning. People from across the land flocked to Legion, to study with him, to serve him, to protect him. After many years at the Scholars Retreat Legion began to concentrate his studies on Telepathy and the Mind. As he began to gain concious control of his innate talent, he disturbed the gentle balance of his psyche. His unconscious thrallherd abilities became unstable and his supposed friends began to suddenly remembered families, obligations, and lives they had walked away from. Many quietly left, but some few turned their anger and suspicion towards Legion
Forced to flee his gentle, easy life just as his had unlocked his first psychic powers, Legion learned to unlock the more violent powers of the mind. At first he used them in defense, fending off angry ex-thralls and their families, but soon he learned how to earn a living with his new psychic powers.
Still, adventuring is hard work frought with danger. The last of his thrall hunters have fallen and Legion hears of this city of gladiators. A Nimbus surrounds it, protection from death. Legion needs some time to perfect his concious control of thralls, and this place seems perfect. And so he begins his journey to Gladius....

Legion stood on a balcony overlooking the dust clouds kicked up in the middle of the arena, near the central obstacle. Two fighters were involved in the typical dance of death, struggling to find their mark with their blades. Suddenly, a portion of the cloud turned red as a spatter of blood sprayed up. The fight was over. There would be a brief intermission until the next one.

Since his last fight, Legion had been paying close attention to the tactics of melee fighters. They relied upon their strength of body and endurance, as well as their prowess in combat. He was not strong enough. Sometimes he felt as though he needed protection. Recently, he had felt different, as if a new power had emerged, as if his mind was now becoming a sort of "beacon". A beacon to what, though?, he thought as he descended the stairs from the observation balcony. His thoughts were interrupted by what seemed to be cries of distress from afar. These were no ordinary cries, however... they appeared to be in Legion's thoughts. Unsure of what they could mean, Legion left the arena to investigate, starting to the north road out of Gladius.

Ready when you are.

Legion reaches down and hefts his pack. A bit heavier than usual, but his new gear did have some weight to it. The years since leaving the Scholars Retreat had been long, but something of this beacon reminded Legion of his early days. The calling, the answering. Then the fearful flight as friends became foes, the blood and screams, nights spent sleeping under hedges.

'Nostalgia.. it infects all of us it seems.' he thought. 'Well no more looking back. I must keep my mind firmly on the path before me.'. And with that thought Legion focused his minds eye on the beacon inside his mind and began to follow it to it's source.

Before he leaves Legion purchases a light crossbow & 50 bolts (40 gp). He also picks up 2 powerstones of enlarged energy ray (ml4, augemnted to 4pp) (400 gp total), a potion of hide from animals (50 gp), a stone of enlarged matter agitation x3 (ml1) (75 gp), and a stone of Solicit Psicrystal (ml5) (375 gp) for a total of 940 gp in expenditures. If you could mark them onto my sheet that would be awesome! I'm searching for a good image for Legion as well, if you see one pass it on.

Expenditures have been added in, and I deducted the gold.

As Legion headed to the north part of Gladius, he stopped by the Hall of the Soldiers of Fortune to ask about some hired help. The building was deserted, and there was a wooden sign posted that said:
"CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE; KEEP OUT!"
spasheridan

05-12-05, 04:06 PM
Legion walks up to the posted sign.

*BANG* *BANG*

"Anyone here? I'm looking to hire a bodyguard!" Legion called as he scaned for any minds in the area. 'do I hear the beacon from this place?' he thought as he looked around.
Sindorin

05-12-05, 04:29 PM
As the sounds of Legion's knocking echo through the empty halls of the stone building, he can sense the calling from the north still, from beyond the city's walls. It is an urgent surge of peril, an obvious call for help.

A voice from an alley next to the building addresses Legion. "You'll find no help within that building, lad." A man in a black cloak steps out and looks up the steps at Legion, smiling. He has calm features, with blue eyes burning with green fire near the pupils. "The Mercenary Guild has been deserted some time, but rumors abound that there may be some available soon. Is something wrong? You look somewhat distressed."
spasheridan

05-12-05, 06:45 PM
Legion turns his gaze apon the darkly dressed man. A few seconds of concentration and Legions mind assayed his aura. 'friend or foe' Legion wondered.

Always on guard, Legion offers little in the way of small talk to the stranger. "My needs are my own, sir. I had hoped to offer employment to some bodyguards, but I can certainly take care of myself. You may recall my recent battles with Graak the Barbarian. And what are you doing here?"

Legion will attempt a sense motive check on the stranger on his current intentions and his response.
Sindorin

05-13-05, 12:19 PM
The man smiles calmly at Legion's uncertainty. "I was once a gladiator in the arena, the same as you. I had a few good victories in my day. It was before this nimbus stuff, too. I was the servant of good in that day though, they called me a 'white wizard.' My, how times have changed."

Legion has an odd feeling about the last part of what this man says... but his hunch is that the man is not lying.

help me... help us... the faint but understandable cry for help brings pause to Legion's suspicions of this man.

"If ye be looking to hire mercenaries, I truly doubt you will find any here... as well as in all of Gladius. Fortune Soldiering is simply not allowed in Gladius... but I believe that they are 'working on it.'"
spasheridan

05-13-05, 12:44 PM
Where does Legion hear this cry for help from?
Sindorin

05-13-05, 12:48 PM
Legion recognizes that the cry for help is indeed the beacon calling him.
spasheridan

05-13-05, 01:41 PM
With a slight nod of his head Legion bids farewell to the stranger. "Thank you for your help sir. I have pressing business elsewhere, so if you will excuse me."

Legion moves off in the direction his mind pulls him.
Sindorin

05-14-05, 06:33 AM
Beckoning the telepath forward to the north of Gladius, the beacon's signal if anything feels more potent and strong as Legion begins his trek outside the city.

Just outside the city where the air begins to look different, and little vegetation appears to be growing, Legion spies what appears to be a man clad in shoddy brown and black rags sitting at the side of the road, leaning against a well. At the telepath's approach, the man gets up with an eager look on his face.

Sorry I didn't post anything for like 12 hours - I started a new job and ended up working 9 or so hours.
spasheridan

05-14-05, 05:28 PM
Legion's mind is focused on the voice he has heard and the plea it has carried to him. The man's sudden movement bring's Legion attention to the area surrounding him. Legion turns his head to the man as he slows his stride.

Legion wouldn't take the time to chat with a man in rags normally. If the man says nothing then Legion will continue on his way.
Sindorin

05-14-05, 06:26 PM
"Please, I beg of you, hand over your money for a poor unfortunate fellow such as myself," the man says. as he extends his palms outwards, several lesions on his arms are exposed in the daylight, and Legion can smell something rotten... This man is obviously a leper.
spasheridan

05-14-05, 07:37 PM
"Hand over my money? Hardly. Begone with you wretch! Bother someone else" Legion grimaces at the leper in distaste and continues on his jouney.

Of coure, since I'm the paranoid type.. spot vs an ambush or a disguise (magical or normal!) on the leper. And sense motive on him.. is he trying to rob me? Or is he begging?
Sindorin

05-14-05, 09:59 PM
Legion is not quite sure of the leper's intentions until a large blade of energy appears in his hands.
"Come on, man, I really need your money! I have debts to pay off..."
spasheridan

05-15-05, 12:48 AM
Legion glances at the diseased man. "Ahh, you're not a leper. You're a martyr. Martyr's are always happier when they are dead. I will oblige you." With a thought Legion rises 20 feet into the air and he points his hand at the man below him.

I'm assuming I'm more than 5 feet away from him so AoO are not a concern. Manifest Psionic Levitate and rise 20 feet straight up.
Sindorin

Lesion Initiative (1d20+3=8) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=88378)
Legion Initiative (1d20+1=9) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=88379)

Legion rises into the air above the rotten leper. The leper's gaze follows him, and he suddenly throws his mind blade at Legion above him (Throw Mind Blade (1d20+8=24) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=88381) vs. AC 18, hits, dealing 11 points of damage (1d10+4=11) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=88382)

The blade hits Legion in the shoulder drawing blood and searing with psioinic energy. When Legion looks from his wound to the leper, the leper is already holding another mind blade. The leper backs off slightly.

Legion: 21/32 HP, AC 18, Psionic Levitate
Leper: ??/?? HP

spasheridan

05-16-05, 12:35 AM
Legion rises farther above the battlefield and concentrates on the creature below him. "Try and talk now little man" Legion says.

Manifest crisis of breath on the creature (I'm assuming it's a valid target.. if he isn't and I can tell please tell me before I waste the PP) expending focus for a DC 21 (greater endowed) save. If he makes the save rise 20 more feet into the air.
Sindorin

05-16-05, 01:46 AM
"What do you- *gasp*" (Leper Will Save (1d20+??=9) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=88745))
"What have you *gasp* done to me?"

Having failed his will save (which I thought would work better...), the man takes a standard action to breathe, but instead of fleeing, he stands his ground proudly...

Crisis of Breath 1/6
spasheridan

05-16-05, 01:49 AM
"Now die for your greed, pathetic fool." Legion concentrates again and manifests a brainlock on the leper.
Sindorin

05-16-05, 01:53 AM
Legion concentrates once again on debilitating the gasping leper (Leper Will Save (1d20+6=21) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=88746) vs. DC 19, saves), but the leper simply gasps in another breath of sparse air and looks up at him...

Crisis of Breath 2/6
spasheridan

05-16-05, 02:20 AM
Legion grimaces at the man below him "Give up if you want to live, you will die soon if I do not relent" and concentrates a moment to regain his focus.

Concentrate to regain focus. BTW my caster level is 5, not 6.. so CoB only lasts 5 rounds. Each round ticks on my turn though so he has 5 rounds of breathe problems.
Sindorin

05-16-05, 09:15 AM
Legion pauses his thoughts and suddenly focuses them with relevant ease (Concentration check (1d20+12=27) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=89008) vs. DC 20, passes), and regains his Psionic Focus.
The leper seems to close his eyes, preparing himself for whatever death awaits.

Crisis of Breath 2/5 I guess I forgot that Thrallherd doesn't grant you a Manifester Level at first level. No biggy :).
spasheridan

05-16-05, 11:10 AM
Legion looks down on the leper one more time and manifests BrainLock on him.

Brainlock, expend focus for greater endowment.
Sindorin

05-16-05, 12:14 PM
The Leper is once again assaulted with a debilitating mental force, and just as it appears that Legion's lock is about to be resisted, suddenly the leper can't breathe or think (Leper Will Save (1d20+??=20) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=89070) vs. DC 21, fails). Unable to take any action to inhale his breath, the leper looks as if he may pass out soon due to the lack of oxygen and to think in general (Leper Fort Save (1d20+??=18) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=89071) vs. DC 21, fails), and then his eyes roll back and he falls over, unconscious.

Crisis of Breath: 3/5

Legion: 21/32, 27/41 pp
Leper: 0/?? disabled
spasheridan

05-16-05, 01:37 PM
Legion stares at the dying leper, wondering if he should feel any pity. Of course, he does not. Legion floats down closer to the (almost) dead man and maintains the brainlock.
Sindorin

05-16-05, 01:51 PM
"hurry... you must get us out of here..."
Legion hears this in his mind from the mental beacon as he floats closer to the unconscious leper. The leper's open sores are now bleeding slightly from the lack of oxygen needed to keep them in their current stabilized disrepair.

Leper: -1/??
spasheridan

05-16-05, 02:13 PM
Legion continues to descend and maintain the brainlock until his feet touch the ground. He draws his crossbow then crosses the few feet remaining between them.

"Maybe you will gain some wisdom in your next life, fool." Legion points the crossbow and the leper and ends his pain.

So 1 round to lower to the ground, 2 rounds to walk to him, 1 round to draw the crossbow, end the brainlock and CDG with crossbow at point blank range on round 5. The brainlock will end after the CDG, and if he's still pumping blood then he get's another CDG crossbow bolt to the skull.
Sindorin

05-16-05, 02:52 PM
Legion descends, ending the brainlock to draw his crossbow.
Brainlock:0/1
Crisis of Breath: 4/5

The leper bleeds (
Stabilize (1d100=53) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=89124)) and does not stabilize).

Legion then walks over to the leper with his newly purchased crossbow and delivers a coup de grace: (Attack: 20! hit,
Damage (2d8=7) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=89125), 7 damge: Fort Save vs. DC 17: 1d20+??=13 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=89127), save failed) and the leper dies, the bolt spraying bits of rotten flesh all over Legion's weapon and Legion himself.
spasheridan

05-16-05, 03:58 PM
"Ew! Leperous beggar.. why can't you die cleanly!" Legion cries as he flings the rotted flesh and brain matter from his cloak and crossbow.

"Well.. in the interest of public health.. let's burn this corpse." Legion takes a moment to examine the body (without any additional contact.. in fact levitate an inch of the ground to avoid any blood puddles). If he finds anything interesting he will use a crossbow bolt to push it away from the corpse. Then he reaches into his pocket for a powerstone, pushes about 10 feet away (upwind, not down) from the body, and rises 20 feet into the air. Manifest Enlarged Mater Agitation(ml1) on the corpse from my stone and conecentrate on it for a while to burn the corpse to ash.

PS drawing a crossbow is a move action, which I can take while concentrating on a power (brainlock). Fear my quibble powers...
Sindorin

05-16-05, 05:03 PM
Oh... hmm...
Sindorin

05-17-05, 03:03 AM
Legion manages to find a Chain Shirt on the leper, as well as several ointments probably used for the leper's lesions, and a few potions in a satchel within the ragged cloak of the leper. There is also a dented horn in a large satchel that was tied to the leper's waist.
It takes quite an effort, but Legion is eventually able to get the Chain Shirt off of the leper, careful not to touch him for fear of becoming blighted. He then manifests Matter Agitation on the corpse from the stone, incinerating the body and the vicious blight that had plagued the poor fellow into beggarhood, shunned from society.

Suddenly the beacon brings Legion back from the realm of putrid smell of rotting burning flesh- "We're down here... help us..."
...
spasheridan

05-17-05, 02:12 PM
Legion spends the time to make sure that the Leper is burnt and crispy, then he continues to follow the beacon in his mind. Down somewhere it said...
Sindorin

05-17-05, 04:10 PM
Looking around after the leper is suffieciently incinerated, the path stretches for some way. There is also the well that the leper was leaning against as well.
spasheridan

05-17-05, 04:37 PM
Hrm.. water? Down here... Legion is about to turn away and continue on his path when his circlet of intelligence kicks him the pants.

'Hey, smart guy.. look in the well' the circlet tells him.

Chagrined, Legion moves towards the well.

Levitate has a 50 minute duration so it should still have a good amount of time going on. I'll float down the well if I need to.
Sindorin

05-17-05, 04:43 PM
Legion peers into the well. It is completely dry, and Legion can't tell for sure how far down it goes. He levitates into the well and begins descending into the dark until a 'bottom' apparently meets with his feet. It is pitch-black down here.
spasheridan

05-17-05, 04:54 PM
Legion goes home and buys an everburning torch. He comes back the next day.

That's the only thing to do in the dark. I didn't bring any torches or light making tools. SOrry.
Sindorin

05-20-05, 04:32 PM
A power stone of Darkvision, Psionic or two may be a bit more cheap and effective. Just a thought while the pause button has been pressed on this quest for a week or however long you'll be gone.
Sindorin

05-27-05, 09:40 AM
Let me know when you are ready to resume with a post. Legion can start out later that day with the necessary equipment, because there happened to be a travelling merchant a few miles back towards Gladius.
