He a fairly serious, and solemn, but strong-willed character. He freely gives advice, encourages teamwork, and likes to be fair about all matters. Though not outwardly expressing it, he champions the ethics of loyalty, trust, and goodly progression. He despises evil and undead, but is not wholly deovted to the cause of smiting evil. He is adamant about improving oneself in efforts to use that power for the good of others. As good as it is bad, Rook is also somewhat stubborn at times, and is secretly eager to prove himself worthy around others. Rook grew as childhood friend to Luken the Renegade. Since their youth, the two had grown to be best friends, even developing their psionic powers together. Rook never grew so attached to Luken's brother, Nell, who was always detached from his brother as well. Throughout adolescence, Rook was always eager to take on the harder challenges, becoming stronger, in hopes of fufilling his goal of gaining an authoritive position through which he could spread the cause of good. Once Nell joined the forces of dark, and grew radically powerful, Luken, with a hard choice, made the decision to take him down in order to prevent him form causing major harm to others. Rook was asked to aid in the fight, for at the time he was stronger than Luken, but as the battle between the three progressed, both Luken and Rook felt their energy being sapped away permanently. In the end, Luken sacrificed himself to an enervating attack that left him near dead, and Rook mamanged to curse Nell with petrification until the two of them were strong enough to re-unite and fell Nell once and for all. They had avidly avoided any measures to kill Nell, hence the petrification, in hopes that Nell might change and use his strength for good instead. However, after the fight, Rook found himself horribly weakened, and since that day has adventured, either alone, as a hired help, or for just cause, in hopes of regaining his former strength. More importantly, he constants moves in search of his separated friend, or worse, enemy, desperately wishing to know their whereabouts and status... Rook is nickanmed the "Chaotic Phoenix" for his wilder days of youth when his steadfast determination and endurance was akin to the perpetuality of the legendary phoenix. Rook himself idolized the bird of fire, even tatooing its likeness on his back, across the shoulders. Even now, infrequently, his normally nonchalant demeanor breaks apart in face of intense adversity, and he wildly lashes back with righteous ferocity. When he finds time to relax, Rook enjoys intellectual games that challenge the mind, and listening to amusing or exciting tales. He also enjoys reading whatever texts he can find, being a small patron of history and lore. He favors subtlety and finesse over brute strength, but he enjoys combining the two even more. Rook is well-mannered and occasionally extends a chivalrous hand. Additionally, he tends to use large words when talking to people, but out of habit. He tends to distrust strangers at first, but extended company usually earns his loyalty. Usually, people are not attracted to his presence, given his, while not ugly, bland features and unimpressive presence. Only once people realize to look beyond his lack of outward influence do they find a strong and loyal ally. More recently, Rook is interested in the trade and acquisition of information. He recognized that knowledge is power, and wishes to keep a personal hand in that power himself. Improving the power and clarity of the mind through divination and psionic exercise, Rook hopes to meet his own personal standards. Currently: Rook discovers the state of Luken and Nell. Dis armor" Fyhir strikes his home crafted Full Plate, it makes a tremendous RING "Dis armor, see, is steel. Strong, but 'eavy. But me father, he once be tellin me 'bout dis metal.. 'e be callin it Mithril. Tis strong as steel but ye can be making it thin and light." "Mithril? Boss, I don't see much armor made out of Mithril. WHere would you be getting enough to make a whole set of Full Plate?" asked Rock. "Aye, in the earth ya dumb rock! It's in der! Ya just gotta know where to dig!" Exclaimed Fyhir. "But, where exactly do I dig...." Fyhir mumbled as he stared at his forge. |
| Jindl04-01-05, 09:10 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Rock_small.jpg "Boss? Before we grab our shovels and head out, maybe we should check with a local diviner. They might be able to tell us where to find some mithril." the Rock responded, after a few moments of thought. |
| spasheridan04-01-05, 11:29 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpg "A Diviner, eh Rock? Who be fillin yer wee 'lil mind with thoughts 'o fortune tellers and hucksters. I be trusting one of them magic types as far as I can throw em!" Fyhir exclaimed. "Now, an honest Seer would do the trick! Castin about wit his mind, scanning out da eather and probin da future, mmm... what di ya tink o dat!" Fyhir banks the last vestiges of flame in the forge and racks his tools. 'Hrm, dat Rock be havin a good idea. One o dem Diviner types might make dis 'ere shoppin trip fer some Mithril a mite shorter dan one o me usual prospectin trips' though Fyhir. "Well Rock, I dinna think we'll be findin a great big dome 'ead in dis 'ere forge. I be thinkin dat we'll be findin one at the Tavern! And some Ale as well! Well, come on, don't be slow." And off they went to the Tavern. (Fyhir saunters over to the Tavern and has a few pints. Standing near the counter he starts to search about the room. Rock crawls onto Fyhir's should and points an faint ectoplasmic arm towards the corner Fyhir follows Rock's arm and notice's Rook. Remebering Rook from the arena's lists of gladiators Fyhir brings a couple of pints to Rook's table and invites himself to sit down) "Aye, laddie, I be Fyhir. Dis ere be Rock. 'Ere, have some Ale!" Fyhir drops a pint in front of Rook and seats himself across the table. "See, I be planning on heading out into the hills looking fer a wee bit o mithril fer me forging needs. Rock 'ere be thinking that a type like you might be able to point me in the right direction. Do ya think you can help? Come now, drink up!" |
| Huan04-02-05, 12:08 AM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg Rook looks over the burly dwarf who had seated himself suddenly before him. He notes the pint of ale pushed towards, but smirks as he pushes it back slowly and calmy replies"Well met, Fyhir and Rock. I am indeed Rook Devange, though I must kindly turn down your beverage.... Heh, I'm afraid alcohol and I disagree to the point where I do not drink anything stronger than water nowadays. Thank you for offering, however." To emphasize the point he poured another glass of clear water from his own pitcher, and took a small sip before continuing, "I am not surprised by your finding me. I have forseen it, in fact. Even though, naturally, the course of the future is constantly shifting, I felt it best to simply take a passive role and see if you would indeed seek me out. "But, now that the issue of your resolve has been settled, I see I must play my part in Fate as well. My gift in utilizing the third eye will indeed aid you, no worries. The mind is, after all, the most powerful assest of our being, is it not? This service may come with a price of course, but we will discuss that afterwards. Please, elaborate upon your request. Mithril is rare, yes, but there are also a few foundrys in this city who carry varying amounts of the precious metal, if at all. When a vein has been founded, shipments of the mined mithril ore go up for sale. Have you not checked with them first?" |
| spasheridan04-02-05, 12:37 AM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpgFyhir squints at Rook. He shakes his head. He squints again. Fyhir picks up the mug he had placed in front of Rook and sniffs it. And sniffs it again. "Ack! Sir, ye be tellin me you dinna drink Ale? 'Tis like a babe turnin down his mothers milk!" 'Well, Rock, you do be saying I be needing some help to find the ore, but this 'ere Rook be a strange one!' Fyhir thinks at Rock. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Rock_small.jpg'Boss, behave. You want the Ore and this guy has that shine about him' Rock projects back, along with an image of Rook's aura. "Aye, well then" Fyhir lifts his own mug and takes a long pull. "Tis a grand idea, this checking out of da foundries 'ere in Gladius. But, I be wanting to make meself a full set of armor. Dwarven armor, cinna dig it? An order like that, more than 50 stones of ore, well, that be a bit hard to come by in a city such as this. And, it be a bit more dear than i be wishin to spend. Mebe ye can be 'elping me to find some ore a wee bit closer to the source." |
| Huan04-02-05, 01:06 AM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg Rook started to chuckle but quickly stifled it. What an amusing dwarf, he thought to himself. He supposed it was rather old to be in a tavern but not drink anything alcoholic, but it was been a practice for him, a sort of discipline. He always insisted upon a clear and focused mind at all times, asnd as a result , he generally abstained from all ale and alcohol. "Ah, I see your dilemma, Fyhir. It is not merely quality but quantity as well. Mm-hmm... follow me," he ushered, standing up and making his way outside of the bar, leaving behind his own drink of water adn the pint of ale. He had one hand folded and the other propping us his chin, as he navigated around the crowded Tavern. In his mind, he was already at work formulating the process necessary to locate the nearest amount of ore, natural or not, and one that was also plenty enough to satisfy Fyhir. |
| Jindl04-02-05, 09:12 AM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg The strange pair headed down the street, without any particular direction, Fyhir following Rook, and Rook following his instincts. While they walked, Rook pondered this challenge. So the dwarf wants mithril. Enough for plate armor. Perhaps if I had a sample of mithril ore, I could trace its origin. Fyhir should be able to unearth enough ore for his purposes at the mine, he reasoned. His mind made up, he turned and began walking towards the foundry. For where else could he find a sample of mithril ore? |
| Huan04-02-05, 02:59 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg As they walked down the streets of Gladius, Rook casually looked across the street vendors' good when he remarked, "Though this may none of my business, what sort of activity do you intend to accomplish with this new dwarven mithril armor? The armor itself is not a goal, but one of many means to an end in life. My curisosity begs me to inquire, what is it you pursue in this lifetime? Do not feel it is pointed. It is merely something I ask all clients." |
| spasheridan04-02-05, 05:26 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpgFyhir pauses a moment. He scratches his beard. Then he nods his head. "Aye, lemme show ye a trinket I 'ave in me pack." Fyhir rummages through his bag and finds a small crystal filled with images. He holds the crystal up to the sun and it fills with a bright light, then suddenly flashes an image on the wall near them. "Aye, see, dat was me Inn. Fyhir's Night Cap I called it. Brewed me own ale, made me own bread, and served it to the few who passed through. As time passed though I realized I was spending more dan I was making. I dinna think that's the way an Inn should be run, and I was thinking... how to make an Inn work. I dinna know then, my now I do. The key to a good Inn..." Fyhir get's real quiet, looks around, then leans in towards Rook "THe secret ya see, is fame. Not many folk ken who Fyhir is, but once I prove me 'self with 100 victories in dis Arena 'ere, well, folk'll be lining up to drink me Ale, eat me bread, and be listinig to every tale I can manage." Fyhir steps back and beams. "Ayup, Fyhir's Night Cap II, home 'o the great gladiator Fyhir. Now, that'll bring em in from other planes! Eh Laddie? Doncha think?" Fyhir slaps Rook across the shoulders and knocks him back a step or two. "See, dat der Mithril Mail, well, it'll be 'elping me move quick, dodge 'dem wily wizards, and it be looking pretty sharp. And dat's why me be wanting to get me hands on some 'o dat mithril." Fyhir stares at Rook. "So, ye can find it, aye? Ye know's where to get me some mithril, aye?" |
| Huan04-03-05, 07:38 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgRook turns his eyes away from Fyhir and looks ahead. "100 victories eh? Well, I had best stay put of the path of such an ambitious dream. May Fate allow you to reach from your dreams. I suppose I will do my part ot help as well. Fame indeed does attract most people, so your plan is well-founded," he said, slightly humoring the dwarf, and slightly being earnest. He was, after all, the middle man in all this. Just another client to pay the bills until he could find his own target and accomplish his own goals... "Do not worry, friend Fyhir, finding mithril is an easy task. This will be no more than a routine exercise for me," Rook said. Far easier than finding a person, he added in afterthought. |

Just another client to pay the bills until he could find his own target and accomplish his own goals... "Do not worry, friend Fyhir, finding mithral is an easy task. This will be no more than a routine exercise for me," Rook said. Far easier than finding a person, he added in afterthought. His eyes were only half-opened at this point, feeling out the otherworldy calls of his intuition, which guided him to the nearest mithral-keeping foundry. http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Foundry1.jpgA few more blocks inward the duo found a local foundry and smithy and Rook paused and looked at the name of the establishment. On a rather finely-made metal post, there was the name "Redforge" painted in appropriately red letters. The heat from the molten metal insdie could have been felt from where they stood, and while Rook squinted against the waves of heat, Fyhir seemed to bask in it gloriously. "This seems to be the place," Rook said confidently, "And given the craftsmanship, I would wager it is dwarven-run as well. So, let's find the person in charge here and ask about some mithral, though maybe it would be best if you did the talking." http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Foundry2.jpgRook had infrequently visited such industrial and busy places, so to him, this was still a relatively new experience. He saw enmorous vats being lifted into the air by a team of soot-covered dwarves and gnomes, and thier contents being poured into respective molds or other similar vats for alloy synthesis. He wagered a guess that Fyhir felt pretty comfortable in such a hard-working place, so the diviner decided to let Fyhir take charge in this area of his expertise. http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Dwarf_Smith.jpgAfter question a few stray workers, the duo found themselves before a sweaty, sharply-muscled, and well-seasoned dwarf smithy, allegedly the chief of this foundry. Rook turned to Fyhir and said, "I leave the acquisition of the mithral piece in your hands." |
| Huan04-04-05, 10:23 AM | Thanks for letting me open the dialogue, Jindl. http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Smith_Head.jpgNot surprisingly, the dwarf spoke to them in a thick accent, "Eh? Good day t' ye both! What kin I do fer ye? Either o' ye be needin' a new weapon o' armor today? Got me some strong ore the other day and ye be smart and buy somethin' today. Smelting takes time, aye, but once it's done, ye can bet our metal sells fast! HAR HAR!" He wiped his large, tough, sooty hands with a dirty rag as he turned to Fyhir first, "And a brother dwarf! What be yer name, son? Come lookin' fer some o' me finest metal eh? Ye got good taste! HAR HAR!" |
| spasheridan04-04-05, 01:58 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpg Fyhir thrusts his callused hand out to meet Dugans. "Aye, well met master smith. I be Fyhir, warrior, smith, and some-time innkeep. 'Tis a fine foundry you have 'ere!" Fyhir steps towards the ore carts and checks their contents. "Mhmm, Iron, Bronze, Copper.. 'ere's some Silver. Ye must be doin a goodly amount of business. But I be lookin fer something a bit differant. Do this be all of your stock?" http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Smith_Head.jpg Dugan smiles as he follows Fyhir round his ship. "Aye, I do be a busy dwarf. Honest work be the gift 'o the gods!" Dugan lift's his arm towards the Rune of Moradin that lay above the shop, blessing all the works within. "But, a special material, other than steel or bronze? I do see that crystal axe 'o yours, but I dinna carry such materials, just ore. What be it, exactly, ye are looking for?" Fyhir reaches the end of the row of stock, not finding a single bin of the Mithril ore. "Well, friend, I be hoping to start a grand project. 'Tis time fer a new suit 'O mail, a suit fitting a gladiator such as meself. I do be wanting a goodly supply of Mithril for me forge." |
| Jindl04-04-05, 02:24 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Smith_Head.jpgAt your mention of the rare silvery metal, the dwarf looks downward. "Nay, we have little of dat precious metal left. We have na' received a shipment o' de ore in weeks. Truth be told, I'm growing a wee bit worried 'bout me cousins at the mine." Dugan Redforge then glances back up at you both, eyes focusing back and forth on each of your faces. As he looks at Rook, you see a spark of recognition in his eyes. "Say, ye wouldn't be da gladiator they call da Chaotic Pheonix, would ye? Ahh, I knew it! I've heard yer a seer o' sorts. Maybe ye could help us?" Lowering his voice to almost a whisper and motioning you closer, Dugan continues, "We would send someone to check on me cousins, if we knew were de mine was. But they have always kept it secret. Maybe you could tell us where it is, if I gave you a bit of de leftover ore from de mine? Whaddya say?" |
| Huan04-04-05, 03:53 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgRook swept his cloak back (and almost accidently caught it on fire with a nearby furnace) and smiled at the dwarf as he replied, "Well met, Dugan Redforge. I am indeed Rook Devange, also called the Chaotic Phoenix. It seems fate has dealt an interesting hand here, and has allowed Fyhir and I to take an active role.... Hmmm, very well. It seems quite beneficial to all that I open the third eye and divine the location of the mithral mine, and so I shall. If you would be so kind as to let me borrow the ore as a focus, and lend me a place to concentrate, the truth will be revealed shortly in only a matter of time." Rook smiled genuinely. For someone who had seen many fortunes, most of them not pleasant in this harsh reality, he was pleased to be able to be given a chance to improve, or even alter, the future of a few. The situation, to Rook, felt it could have developed into a life or death mattter, as many mysterious disappearances often did, so for this he would offer his services and efforts freely. "What say you, Fyhir and Rock, on this matter?" he asked, pointing it to his two newest companions, hoping the dwarf would help another of his brethren. |
| spasheridan04-04-05, 04:46 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpg Fyhir nimbly steps over to Rook and says"Ack, laddie, you be watching them sparks!" as Fyhir moves Rook away from the stove pipes he was getting to close to. After Rook is safely away from the fires, Fyhir turns to Dugan. "Aye, I do be needing the mithril. Yer kin be needin some checking up on. I'll gladly go peek at da mine if it'll be gettin dat ore flowing back into the city and into me forge." Fyhir turns a suspicous eye over to Dugan and wonders if Dugan is really kin with the dwarves in the mine. "So, Rook, what kinya ken from some tailings outa dat mine? Can ya ken who be diggin it, and who be haulin it, and from where? Tell me more about who be diggin it, maybe you kin getta feelin bout how them cousins o Dougal's are doing right now" |
| Huan04-04-05, 05:15 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgAfter being hustled away from flames, Rook took careful note to be more mindful in such dangerous places. After all, his abilities were not at the point yet where his intuition would allow him to react with faster-than-normal abilites and have insight into the immediate future. Knowledge AND wisdom were what he needed most, really, and were means to an end for his goal in life. He checked over the end of his cloak, saw that it was fine, and then turned back to Fyhir, mentally thankful that the dwarf was looking out for him. "Well, Fyhir, with a quick session I can find out almost anything that happened to or around this chunk. I can see who handled it, who mined it, where it was taken from, and with a little bit of luck, see what went on in the mines around it at the time of excavation. The more concentration I put in, the better the results, needless to say. If a strong vision is created, any notable events surrounding this rock or where it was, will be revealed." Hoping that was a satisfactory answer, Rook held out a gloved hand, beckoning to Dugan, "Let us begin." Barring no further developments, Rook will go with Dugan to get ahold of the mirthal ore, as well as a place to divine in peace. Then maybe he gets a vision...? |
| Jindl04-04-05, 06:44 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgThe room was small, holding just a dusty cot and a wooden table. The heat from the furnaces permeated the air, and the rhythmic clanging of hammers on steel reverberated through the walls. Rook pushed the table against the wall, clearing a space in the center of the room to meditate. Then, turning to Fyhir and Dugan, who were still waiting in the doorway, he said "Yes, this room shall do nicely. Do you have the ore?" http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Smith_Head.jpg"Aye, but dis is all that was left," the master craftsman responded, holding forth his palm. In it rested a small piece of rock, no larger than a pebble. "De lads are careful ta use every piece when working with such precious metals. Found this small bit a laying aside de furnace. Hope it'll do." "It will do fine," Rook responded, with a nod. "Now, if you both would be so kind as to wait outside. I'll summon you when its finished." Once the two dwarves had oblidged his request, Rook removed his cloak. Spreading it upon the floor, he sat, crosslegged upon it, cradling the mithril ore in his palm To those who can open themselves up to the Sight, the gift is as much a curse as it is a boon. The knowledge comes as a flood, and without training, the gifted often drown. True power comes from control. Control your gift, control your destiny... Luken told me that. Luken... Slowly, Rook opened his mind. The ringing of the anvils became his mantra. And the world lost shape around the sensation of the stone in his hand. And as his eyes closed, his sight opened. He watched as the stones history rewound. At first slowly, showing him images of the past minute, past hour, past day. Then more quickly, as the stone lay buried beneath a dwindling pile of ore in the forge. Of course, since the images went in reverse as Rook's sight travelled back into the past, to one untrained in their gift it would appear that the pile grew larger. But Rook had been trained in this as well, and had taught his mind to remember the entire sequence of events and then reverse them later. So concentrating, he increased the rate at which his sight extended, passing through several weeks in but a blink, until he came to the day the ore arrived. Rook watched as the ore was unloaded from the wagon, and as the wagon rode up to the foundry, and as the wagon proceeded into the city. He watched the entire trip of the wagon, noting landmarks on the way. One in particular caught his interest. A ruined fortress atop cliffs sat near the entrance to the mine, where the ore had been loaded. Rook watched as several dwarves shoveled the ore on the wagon. He watched the same ore as it had been brought from the depths of the mine. Everything seemed normal. And then his senses were alarmed. There in the darkness was a shadow. A psionic presence that did not belong. Yet the miners seemed completely unaware, as if they did not sense the presence. As if Rook's minds eye was glimpsing something they had not been aware of at that time. But most disturbing of all, Rook could sense its blade. A greatsword burning in dark contrast to the psionic presence wielding it. And Rook's mind splintered into one thought. "NELLL!!!" ...http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpg "Seer? Ye okay?" Rook awoke to Fyhir's concerned, and perhaps a bit rough, shaking. "Ye were screaming. What did ye see?" And as Rook opened his eyes, the two dwarves who had rushed into the room in reaction to his screams, waited patiently for his response. |
| Huan04-05-05, 02:48 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgRook's heart nerarly left his chest as serveral beats were surely skipped. He gripped his chest to assure himself that the shock had not stopped it completely. His eyes were opened wide and there wasa light of amazement, shock, fear, and intrigue at the same time. He breathed hard to calm himself, but his mind was the most rattled. Simultaneously, it told him over and over that is was Nell he saw in his vision, but at the same time his intuitive reaction was to deny it. The powerful psionic presence breaking his own concetration, especially one with a greastword wielded ... None could shake him so expect for one being .... Nell. The elven psy-mage could only guess what business his most hated foe could be conducting in the mines, especially with Onnen, his greatsword, drawn... this was a bad omen indeed. Oh Fate, how cruel you are, delivering both opportunity and death into my hands, he thought to himself. His rattled state subsided and gave way to the rising mountain of grim seriousness and determination. Casting away the nonchalant and slightly jovial countenace he had entered the room with, he now wore a face ready for battle and eyes that burned with a fire more intense that those used in the very foundry around him. He turned to Dugan and Fyhir, "I bear bad news..." he started. Proceeding to explain his vision, he left out no detail except for the detail of his suspicion on who the psionic swordsman was. He picked up his traveling cloak from the floor, shook it out, and swung it around his neck, clasping it in place, "The vision was quite vivid indeed, Dugan. Do any of those landmarks, particularly the ruined fortress, remind you of any locales? There is something ... evil there; I saw it. The lives of your kin may very well be in mortal danger, quickly!" |
| Jindl04-05-05, 06:54 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Dwarf_Smith.jpg Dugan paced, between the door and the table, back and forth for a moment, muttering to himself. "Something evil, eh? ... Gonna be sorry fer messin' with dis clan ... gotta grab me axe ... argh, but I cannae leave me forge empty ... gotta produce dat barding for de archangel ... staked me honor and me soul on it ... ARGH!!" before finally striking the table hard with both fists. Slowly, he turns to you and responds to your question, "Aye, tis likely the Watchtower," and then to answer your puzzled expression he adds, "an old dwarven keep where me kin once lived. Tis only 4 or 5 days ride from 'ere. But I cannae go myself, much as I would like to. Ken ye good folk help us? Will ye go see to me kin at the mine?" |
| spasheridan04-05-05, 06:59 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpg Fyhir rushes over and checks on his companion Rook. After reasuring himself that Rook's OK, Fyhir looks at Dugan. "Aye master smith. If what Rook be saying tis true, yer kin'll be needing our 'elp. I've got me a fine axe and a strong arm, so dinna worry yerself bout yer boys. I'll make sure they're in good shape.. and that they be sendin you yer next load 'o mithril!" FYhir pauses a moment, then looks Dugan straight in the eye. "But, this watchtower, this fortress, 'tis soundin like a story and an important one. Afore we go marchin inta danger, tell us what we be facin" |
| Huan04-05-05, 07:54 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg "Yes, I will go too... we both will," Rook said strongly, his hands balling into fists, still upset over what he had saw, "With my brains and Fyhir's brawn I beleive a good team can be made here. We will go to Watchtower mind immediately, do not worry at that. I believe it in in everyone's best interest here that the events transpired there must be investigated... and any danger resolved... And yes, friend Dugan, if you have more knowledge about Watchtower that would help, please tell us." He looked over what he had on him at the moment. His usual assortment of scrolls, stones, and potions lined the innards of his cloak and belt, and he felt he was good to go as soon as possible. He then waited for Dugan to impart any useful information. |
| Jindl04-05-05, 10:18 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/EatWM/Smith_Head.jpg"Aw, ye are heroes, the both of ye!" Dugan exlaimed, with a hard clap on both of your backs! "As for the Watchtower ... twas an old keep set upon a tall cliffside, built to guard against Orks <spits>. Twas abandoned long ago, in the time of me grandfadder's grandfadder. I dunno why. I ken tell ye it lies in the foothills of de mountains north o' Gladius, about 4 or 5 days ride. If der be mithril there, de mine entrance should be down at de base of de cliffs, where de ore is closer to de surface." "Please heroes. Hurry an rescue me kin. Tis been weeks since the last shipment, and I fear fer their safety." |
| spasheridan04-06-05, 12:01 AM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpgFyhir's hand grips the handle of his axe, tightening until his knuckles turned white. A small bluish spark traveled up the shaft into the crystal blade. The crystal begins to glow. "Orcs. Would be strange to be seein them show up after all dese years, but those dirty greenskins 'ave a low cunning." Fyhir takes a moment to consider his next few steps, then nods. "Rook, I'll be needing to saddle up Horse and pack me things. Time dinna wait fer us, so let's be on our way!" Since we're heading out, Fyhir would like to stop and pick up a powerstone of animal affinity (ML3) and 2 potions of CLW (CL1) for 250 GP. Can you make the adjustments to the sheet up there Jindl? |
| Huan04-06-05, 12:04 AM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgRook chuckled, breaking his new, tough exterior, "Hero, eh? Can't say I expected to be called that... and that's funny coming from me, heh heh." He adjusted his gloves, fitting the brown leather articles tight over his hands. He then kicked in his traveling boots, and was glad he traveled well today. In the back of his mind, he wondered just how many orcs there were, but felt that even they, would likely would outnumber the force of himself and Fyhir, would have a hard time matching quaility over quantity. He walked a little to the doorway. "Right! Let's go!" 2 CLW potions for me for 100 gp. Then I'm good to go |
| spasheridan04-06-05, 12:37 AM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Rock_small.jpgRock projected his doubts about the mission to Fyhir 'So Boss, on to great adventure again? I thought you were done with this kind of thing! It was all going to be safe fights in Gladius until it was time for a new Inn. Are you sure this is what you want to be doing?' 'Aye, me wee stone-headed friend. Some things.. well, they just need to be done' FYhir sent back. The road, companions on a dangerous journey, people in need. The years rolled back in Fyhir's mind as he remembered the last adventures he had been on, the battle in the lava pits, a ruined underground temple. And that dreadful encounter with the shambling mounds deep under the hills. 'Aye Rock, some things need doin' |
| Jindl04-08-05, 08:48 PM | It was midday when the duo departed Gladius bound for the northern mountains. Although the sun shone high in the sky, the spring air still carried a chill to it. Rook pulled his cloak tightly around himself as they travelled, glancing at the dwarf, who accustomed to such temperatures marched steadily beside him. The day passed quickly and quietly, as each was too involved in their own thoughts for friendly conversation. As the daylight waned, they reached the first of the landmarks from Rook's vision. A split in the road, with one branch leading to Niorniei, or so the sign indicated. Rook had heard of the town, a small halfling community recently liberated from bandits by the elven gladiator, Rayos. But their route lay down the other path, leading farther north and deeper into the hills. Deciding this crossroads to be an excellent place to camp, the two settled down for a quiet evening. The next 3 days passed much the same, the pair quietly travelling from landmark to landmark. Despite the resolve of their journey, Rook and Fyhir grew to enjoy each other's company. But business took priority and Rook and Fyhir rounded one last mountain, and sighted the ruins of the watchtower off in the distance. Weary from the days travels, the pair made camp for the night and resolved to find the mine in the morning. @Huan/Spasheridan - You are now entering the combat zone. |
| Jindl04-08-05, 11:05 PM | Dawn comes at long last, and with it the resolve that today will be the day that their goal shall be reached. Rook and Fyhir quickly break their camp, eager to finish this stage of their quest. Once packed for travel, the two psionic adventurers meditate to gain their focus for the day. During his meditation, Rook replays the vision in his mind. Already he has glimsped much of the terrain ahead: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/MiningCampandRoad.jpg http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg As Rook assists Fyhir in donning his full plate, the Seer confides in him, "We are heading south now, having travelled around the mountain. The round will turn east approximately a mile ahead, travelling past the ruins. There, at the end of the road we shall find what we seek." http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpg "Aye, lad. Today's the day," was Fyhir's response. You are on the road just beyond the northern edge of the map. Actions? |
| spasheridan04-08-05, 11:20 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpg(Fyhir is mounted on Horse, Lance in hand. Rock is on my shoulder keeping an "eye" out for trouble - his vision range is 40 ft max. I imagine Fyhir is taking point, maybe 15 or 20 ft ahead of Rook. I'll be scanning for trouble and slowly moving south on the road) "Are ye sensing any trouble, laddie?" Fyhir asks Rook as he feels eyes on the back of his head. |
| Huan04-09-05, 12:40 PM | Yeah... I was unexpectedly in the hospital being checked for head and body trauma all day yesterday ... so sorry for not giving word and slowing you down. I am fine now, and will be available all weekend. http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg Rook took his bow out and similarly began to scan the area as they moved. His eyes narrowed as he looked for possible areas of ambush and he listened for any unnatural sounds. "Indeed, there is troubble afoot here. We had best stay close together, Fyhir," Rook suggested "With hordes of orcs about, the last thing we need is our forces to be divided." And with that Rook moves to follow Fyhir about 15 ft behind him. He noted the fortress atop the hill, and wondered what ancient mysteries it may have held ... and what dangers it hid... |
| Jindl04-10-05, 12:53 AM | For Rook, the answers to those questions would have to wait. More pressing matters would soon be at hand. As the two psionic adepts travelled down the road, Rock and Fyhir sense movement up ahead. Looking intently, the dwarf spots a large blueish creature hidden in some brush. Vanishes, not crouches, hides, or backs away. But quite literally, disappeares into thin air! The sudden disappearance leaves Fyhir wondering for a split second if perhaps he didn't just imagine the creature in the first place... Rook was surprised. Then the spider acted. Now, Fyhir gets a standard or a move action. |
| spasheridan04-10-05, 01:10 AM | Fyhir let's out a yell to warn Rook "Ack, Laddie keep yer head down" as he concentrates and begins to bring up a defensive force field. Activate Forcescreen (1PP) and if I can ride Horse (free action, right?) back me up to 5' awy from Rook. |

| Huan04-10-05, 10:36 AM | Rook was unsure, at first, how to react. Just now, Fyhir had just warned him of some hazzard ahead, but he did not see anything. But, judging from the dwarves actions before, Fyhir was in good faith about watching out for him. Taking his words to heart, the psy-mage decided to play it safe and maintain the element of surprise himself... Rook will cast Invisibility and move closer to Fyhir at half speed as quietly as possible (Move Silently). Next round, if there is no threat, he will manifest a 1 pp Inertial Armor. I guess Dugan Redforge's words must have gone to his head, Rook thought to himself. Of course, Fyhir's brave (or foolhardy) actions left Rook all alone, and while the psi-mage was used to being self-reliant, he didn't particularly fancy facing any opponent unprepared. So quickly he erected a basic inertial armor around himself, before continuing to quietly follow in his ally's footsteps. As stated, Rook manifests a 1 pp inertial armor, then moves quietly at half speed 15 ft forward following Fyhir. |
| Jindl04-11-05, 01:58 AM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/phasespider_small.jpgAs Fyhir continues to look around for the spider, suddenly it simply appears next to him! Surprised, but prepared, the dwarf stabs at the great spider with his lance, while Rook expends psionic energy to charge the attack with deadly power. (Lance 19 +7 vs AC 15, hits. Damage = 1d8+4 +2d6 = 17 pts.) Although blackish blood spurts from the wounded spider, it continues with its planned attack, rearing up and attempting to sink its fangs into the dwarf! But the venomous fangs only slide across the thick plate of Fyhir's armor, leaving a trail of toxic slime on the steel. As quickly as he attacks, the spider vanishes again, leaving not a trace of his presence. |
| Jindl04-11-05, 02:21 AM | Having finally gotten a look at the spider, even for a brief moment, Rook realizes that it is the elusive Phase Spider. | Huan04-11-05, 09:35 AM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg A phase spider! Certainly not what I would have expected... bad portents indeed..., Rook mused as he took out a potent powerstone of Energy Ray. It was a gamble, but he needed to end this fast, as such a extraplanar creature could have proved disasterous. "Fyhir, come closer to the sound of my voice and prepare to lay waste to this beast!" he shouted, hoping his plan to attract both his partner and arachnid foe would work. He needed Fyhir's cooperation for this one, so he hoped the dwarf would listen. Rook will shout (free action; likely Listen DC for spider: -10) and distract the spider to him. In the meanwhile, he will 5-ft adjust forward to (11,10) (maybe throwing the spider off, if it pinpointed my voice in the previous spot), pull out a powerstone of Energy ray, set it for Fire (5d6+5), and ready to manifest it (hopefully passing the ML check) once the spider is in view, is material, and in range. (Remember my +2 to hit for being invisible) |

Fyhir wheels his mount around, moving back down the road next to where he heard Rook's shout. "Aye, laddie. I'm here," he says, readying his lance to attack the spider. Meanwhile, on the ethereal plane ... http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/phasespider_small.jpg Ah, crap!! I hate dwarves and I hate armor and I hate armored dwarves. But I'm sooo hungry. Maybe the elf will be a better meal, I can already hear him squeeling ... thought the phase spider, as Rook's cry echoes into the ethereal. Then moving into position, the spider phases in to attack! |
| Jindl04-11-05, 12:07 PM | For a moment, Rook is glad that Fyhir heard his call and responded. The armored dwarf mounted on the heavy horse, lance in hand, would be a reassuring sight to any ally. But such assurance was short-lived, as Rook turned to see the frightening image of the phase spider materialize right next to him. The beast had reared up its front two legs, and Rook could see the venom glistening on the oversized fangs. Quickly, the psion extended his mind into the powerstone he held in his hands. Contacting the power within was easy, and Rook felt a rush of energy as a ray of flame lept from the stone towards the spider! (ML check 9 +2 vs DC 6, pass. Attack 9 +5 +2 invisible vs AC 12 <no dex>, hits. Damage = 5d6+5 fire = 27 pts.) The flaming energy ray struck the spider directly between its 8 small eyes, burning a hole through its brain and exiting out the back of its head. Fyhir turns to Rook "And dat was a nice piece 'o work there wit' the flames. Well done!". Fyhir dismounts and kneels near the corpse for a few moments as he regains his focus and imbues it within Rock. After a quick look around the immedaite area for any recent victims of the spider, he mounts Horse and sets off down the trail towards the mine. "Hurry up laddie, der be some dwarves who be needin out help!" |
| Huan04-11-05, 08:02 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg"Aye-I mean-Yes, thank you... and yes, we should hurry," Rook agreed, slipping a little into a dwarven accent, perhaps accustoming himself a little to quickly to his companion. As he tossed the flushed stone onto the ground, he was a little worried in the back of his mind, but did not show it. It concerned him that he did not exactly forsee the presence of such a threat. He suspected it was either becuase such a threat was new, after his scrying, which was possible, or maybe someother presense was obscuring the dangers in this area... wishing to keep the element of surprise... He starts to run after Fyhir but then called out to him, "I do not possess the speed of your mount, I'm afraid. Perhaps it would be better if we shared the horse and rode together?" |
| Huan04-13-05, 11:08 AM | I'm not sure if Fyhir lets me ride horseback with him... but oh well. http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg Rook still keeps a close eye out on the path ahead, wary of any more theats that either were revealed or forseen by his visions. He cast a downward look as he then suddenly remembered his slightly selfish reason for coming along. True, he did enjoy the chance to selflessly help others in dire need. Truth to tell it was a rather exciting opportunity that did not come by every day. But, unfortunately, even that took second place to his real motive in coming along. Deciding to relieve a little of the stress, he decided to confide in Fyhir a bit. "Fyhir...," he started, suddenly very solemn, "You and I are both beings who have seen many years and will continue to do so if able... but have you ever encountered a being with whom you could never forgive, even with death? I often hear the complete trust of a dwarf typically takes several decades, at least, and their scorn endures for millenia. If this is true, in all of your travels have you ever encountered a person once close to you that had wounded you so personally that you would devote your life to seeing their ultimate demise....I suppose you could call it 'absolute hatred' ... have you ever had to cope with such a feeling, friend Fyhir?" Rook waited for a reply, as he realized it was a rather out-of-place topic to bring up. Casting a glance at his left hand's ring finger and rubbing it gingerly as if remembering a old pain, the elf released a heavy sigh... |
| spasheridan04-13-05, 02:47 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpgFyhir turns in his saddle a bit towards Rook. "Hrm. When I be hating a man that much I be driving me axe through his skull. But if a friend betrayed me, aye, well that would be a differant thing. If a mate turned on me.. well, I do believe that blood would be revenge enough. But I count me blessings that I have not had to turn the sharp edge 'o me axe against a betrayer." Fyhir shakes his head sadly. Horse continued to carry them both down the road, closer and closer towards the mine. |
| Huan04-14-05, 01:56 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgRook chewed on Fyhir's words silently as they rode on. What if they did not die from the first swing Fyhir? Do I merely swing again and hope for the best?, he thought. He pictured what the dwarf likely would have said, and sensed he would have agreed. Then, I suppose I shall have to merely sharpen my 'axe' and keeping swinging, he thought, a comforted smile creeping along his lips. Rook will still spot/listen as best he can. |
| spasheridan04-14-05, 02:32 PM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpg Horse continued to carry Fyhir and Rook down the road, closer to the mine. Fyhir and Rook's sharp eyes noted the trees, the road, the rocks, and the animals.. it all seemed so normal. "Laddie, not that I be doubtin yer mental powers, but kin ya tell me again what ye be thinking is ahead? Dis 'ere road seems to be fine." Fyhir asked his companion. "Ye seem to be dwellin on something.. particular. Tell me, what is it dat you be fearing we will see up ahead," |
| Jindl04-14-05, 02:41 PM | Fyhir's question would soon be answered, though not in the way that either of them expected. As the two had quietly talked, they had travelled south on the road next to the cliff. Well, it wasn't a road exactly, more like a set a wagon ruts dug into the ground, presumably by ore laden wagons heading to Gladius from the mine. But the road was empty of such traffic now. As the day progressed, the two had rounded the platuea upon which the ruined fortress still overlooked this part of the valley. The day was quite warm, and so the two were glad for the shade as the wagon trail wove northeast along the cliff base and into a wooded region. Rook knew they were drawing near to the camp, and his suspicions were confirmed as they caught a glimpse through the thinning trees. |
| Jindl04-15-05, 02:34 PM | At first glimpse, the camp looked ordinary. A pair of wooden buildings were situated around a large fire pit, where a gnome was tending to a cook pot. Farther down the trail the entrance to the mine was visible, cut into the cliffside. Behind the buildings, a fenced pasture could be seen, where draft mules were likely kept when not at work in the mine. Crates and barrels had been stacked next to the eastern building, and beyond it a mass of detris from the mound was piled high. All of this was normal according to Rook's vision. But then the illusion was shattered, as a humanoid of an unknown race sauntered out of the shadow of the west building, heading towards the gnome. Well armed and armored, the humanoid is obviously not a miner. Judging from his facial expression as he spots you on the trail nearby, he is obviously not friendly either! | Huan04-15-05, 11:19 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgRook took a step forward, his eyes narrowed and burning with an intense glare as he locked eyes with the armored man , "Be ready and wary Fyhir," he whispered quickly to his companion, "I sense malignment intentions here..." Moving to try and grasp the scenario, Rook spoke while at the same time mentally setting up a mental barrier similar to before. "Are you the mine-warden here?" he shouted, making himself heard and somewhat trying to strike up a pseudo-diplomatic conversation. He actually did not understand why the sudden hostile face. Perhaps the man mistook them for someone else...? Maybe they were brainwashed...? Or maybe ... they were simply bad men. But, if they were linked to the psionic evil he sensed before.... maybe they knew something about Nell... He intensified his psionic aura around him, making it visible and subtly tipping the polearm-bearing humanoid to keep at bay and not threaten him. "My name is Rook Devange. There is no need for such a scowl, for we are travelers who mean you no harm. But should you wish to start a fight ... understand that we will defend ourselves." Waiting shortly for a reply he quickly tacked on with a smirk, "And you would be well advised to tell me everything you know about Nell..." [Assuming he was at (1,8) before, Rook 5-ft adjusts to (1,9). Also, during this dialogue, Rook will be manifesting a 1 pp Ineritial Armor. If he can do so easily, he will over-dramaticize the displays, making a scene of it. And, was there any way of catching a bit of what that man yelled? If I cannot indentify his race flat-out, will Knowledge Arcana/Psionics help?] |
| Jindl04-16-05, 01:17 AM | The humanoid seems a bit surprised at Rook's display of psionic power. Quickly, he shouts again, and as he hears two replies from the western building, his resolve returns. Glaring at you both, the githyanki (as Rook now determines) declares in a heavily accented Common, "Good. More recruits to work in the mines with the rest of the terran filth." Then he slaps his fist against his breastplate in a sign of derision, and brings his halberd to the ready. (Rook KS-Psionics 7 +12 = 19. You know that he is a githyanki, an evil extraplanar psionic humanoid. He has minor power resitance, and some lesser psionic powers, but is otherwise similar to a human.) Fyhir is next to act. |
| spasheridan04-16-05, 02:23 AM | http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/Fyhir_small.jpgFyhir begins to raise his defenses and reaches into his pocket to retrieve one of his stones of power. "If ye be leavin da mine now, I be letting ye leave wit yer worthless hides intact!" | Jindl04-16-05, 04:09 PM | Glancing back and forth between the two of you and the githyanki, the gnome suddenly realizes that he is in a bad location. With a squeek, he turns to run. As he does, the githyanki lashes out with his halberd, hooking his feet out from under him. With a thud, the gnome hits the dirt hard, lies there prone, and begins whimpering. "Nobody's leaving." the Githyanki rasps, fixing his gaze upon Fyhir. |
| Jindl04-16-05, 04:31 PM | With the clatter of a door being thrown open, Rook and Fyhir hear two creatures (presumably allies of the githyanki) moving out of the western building and into the courtyard. They remain out of sight around the corner of the building. Howver, you both get a good look as another githyanki exists the eastern building. This one seems to be another warrior, and he readies himself for battle by unslinging his spiked chain and performing a similar, breastplate thumping sign of derision towards you. Behind him, a female githyanki remains in the doorway. As she is unarmored, you at first assume she may just be a spectator, perhaps some consort to these ruffians. But then she performs a few arcane words and gestures, and a shield of force appears about her body. Though you have started it, know that we will finish it!" Rook explained as his hand went into his pocket and he flared up another menacing aura. Immediately thereafter, however, he quickly whispered to Fyhir, "It seems we are outnumbered here. We would be wise to not split up, lest our forces be overwhelmed. Let us concentrate our efforts on one of them at a time. You pick the first target, and may good fortune ride with us today." He then assumed a battle visage, clearing his mind and sharpening his steely mind. Rook takes a stone a ML4 Vigor and manifests from it. |
| Jindl04-17-05, 12:28 AM | The githyanki glances back over his shoulder at the arrival of his allies. His confidence renewed, he slashes his halberd through the air in an impressive display of skill. Then he holds his ground and snarls, as if to say, "bring it on!" Fyhir is next, then the gnome. |

| Jindl04-17-05, 10:25 AM | In response to your show of strength, the githyanki seem to be moving into position. One of the previously unseen allies from the western building moves behind the cover of the northeast corner of the building. From your vantage point, you can see him well enough to note that he is garbed in studded leather (unlike the other githyanki who are all in breastplate armor), and that he has drawn a pair of daggers. The githyanki with the chain moves northward, and seems to be holding his chain at the ready, while the other unkown githyanki remains out of sight, although you can both hear his movement further into the courtyard. The female githyanki mage casts another spell from the doorway, and you see a translucent energy leave her chest and form into an almost invisible floating hand beside her. "Let me try and handle the growing crowd..." he whispered to Fyhir, before taking out a small parchment of paper, chanting a few choice words, and disappearing from view completely. Rook will take out a scroll of Invisibility and cast from it. |
| Jindl04-17-05, 01:12 PM | As Rook disappears, the githyanki all look a bit surprised. The one with the halberd shouts back in the same unknown language, "Qsdkfsi dlskf ewer fvsuhhlkh!!" While both the githyanki with the chain and the githyanki with the daggers appear to be waiting at the mage's command, the final opponent reveals himself. Moving from behind the corner of the western building, a githyanki clad in a breastplate and using a tower shield moves across the courtyard taking up position in front of the mage. Battle axe in hand, the witch's bodyguard stands ready to defend her. Behind cover, the witch recognizes the result of Rook's spellcasting. Preparing a spell of her own, she tosses some ground up mica in the air, and then guided by arcane energies, the dust is enhanced in brightness and guided across the courtyard, where it bursts in a display of brillant color upon you both. (Rook: Will 5 +7 vs DC ??, fails. Fyhir: Will 13 +6 vs DC ??, pass.) Rook instantly recognizes the glitterdust spell, and knows that his invisibility will be spoiled. Unfortunately, his observation comes a split second too late, and the brilliant flash of dust catches him with his eyes wide open, blinding him. Fyhir is luckier. Thanks to his dwarven heritage, he is resistant to spells like these. But he is a bit dismayed to see his invisible ally outlined by the dust and clutching his eyes. His dismay turns quickly to a battle rage, as the githyanki mage screams, "Hedgst!!", which judging by the actions of her allies means, "Now!!". At her command, the githyanki with the daggers and the githyanki with the chain move quickly towards you both to attack! Fyhir is glad for the distance he had kept, as the githyanki with the chain is only able to approach without actually getting close enough to attack. Rook is not as lucky. The dagger wielding githyanki slinks along the wall of the building, more mobile due to his lighter armor, and getting within 30 feet he launches a dagger. (Dagger 1! +?? vs FF AC 14 -2 blinded, miss.) Fortunately for Rook, the githyanki is embarrased as he trips over the front doorstep of the building and his shot goes wide. Cursing in his extraplanar tongue, the githyanki flicks his wrist and another dagger appears in his hand. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/MiningCamp_Grid_3.jpg Init 22 - Githyanki w/ tower shield: (18, 18), ??/?? hp 22 - Githyanki mage: (20, 19), ??-3/?? hp, shield [??], spectral hand (3/3 hp) [??] 21 - Githyanki w/ daggers: (5, 13), ??/?? hp 21 - Githyanki w/ chain: (8, 8), ??/?? hp 18 - Rook: (1, 9), 45/25 hp, 10/12 pp, inertial armor (+4 armor) [2 hrs], vigor [41], invisibility [33], glitterdusted [??], blinded [??] 15 - Githyanki w/ halberd: (10, 13), ??/?? hp, readied 15 - Fyhir: (mounted), 61/41 hp, 9/11 pp, force screen (+4 shield) [40], vigor [41], animal affinity (Str +4) [33] """ - Horse: (bottom left 2, 8), 30/30 hp 11 - Gnome miner: (12, 9), ??/?? hp The other githyanki have gone first (above). | Huan04-20-05, 11:50 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpgBlast!, Rook thought, as his eyes watered to try and get the blinding dust of of his eyes. He was certainly caught off guard by that attack, and such an event pretty much threw a wrench in his entire plan of attack. He knew there was a foe nearby, and likely it was gearing up to strike next. Rook frowned, but knew to keep his mind clear from making any fatal msitakes. Until he could get his bearings straight, he was only a liability to Fyhir now... "Think you've got me, eh?" Rook said to the the nearest foe, not sure if he was even facing the right direction, "But which 'me' have you got?" And with that the elven psy-mage became fuzzy as image after illusional image separated from the real him and spread out in a disjoint and confusing pattern. They were all miming his moves precisely, not a single one acting too quickly or too slowly after the other. He returned to rubbing his eyes, and hoped that this would at least buy him a little time to recover. Rook will cast Mirror Image of his sparkly self while sidestepping from his original location, and leaving an image there instead. (the other images can be set up randomly in the any direction) |
| Jindl04-21-05, 12:03 AM | As the githyanki look on, Rook's image becomes blurry. His body seems to split into multiple images that swirl around and around. The images swirl and extend to the south, leaving 4 possible targets for the confused githyanki. Boldly, the githyanki with the halberd spits and says, "Your parlor tricks won't save you from me, Warlock!" in heavily accented Common, before steping forward and readying his weapon. The Githyanki w/ halberd is now at (7,9). Fyhir is next, then the gnome. |

Lance at the ready Fyhir rides down the chain wielding Gith. Is punk appropriate fantasy slang? I don't see exact positions of Rook or the Halberd wielder, so this action assumes that the chain wielder isn't readying an action (I should be able to tell that), and that Rook and the Halberd wielder are not in my way. Amazingly, the githyanki slips under the tip of the lance, so that the psionically charged weapon passes safely over his shoulder. In retaliation, it sends a mighty kick towards the githyanki's chest. (Hoof: 15 +6 +2 charging vs AC ??, hit. Damage = 1d6+4 = 9 pts.) Trying to hold back the panic he had felt before, he hurries quickly to the edge of the cliff, trying to find a safe place to watch the unfolding battle. |
| Jindl04-21-05, 10:10 AM | Across the courtyard, the bodyguard holds his position with his tower shield, providing cover to the witch behind him. The dwarf makes an effort to stab at the hand with his lance, but is unable to do so as the hand glides in and delivers the electrical jolt! Luckily for Fyhir, he recently replaced the leather padding in his armor, and it provides some resistance so that an otherwise fatal charge only results in a minor burn. The githyanki with the daggers also presses the attack, moving forward to engage all of the Rook's in melee. Unsure of where to attack first, he strikes out randomly. (1d4 <1 is Rook> = 3, an image. But, he then saw that although Fyhir took a tremendous jolt, he was still up and ready to dish it back in double. That's one hell of a tough dwarf, he thought, as he turned to the furious fighter he had just crippled. Pulling out a scroll of his own, Rook then chanted a few choice words. Immediately twin orbs of force materialized around him, swirled in a circle once, and veered towards the atrophied githyanki. He breathed heavily, but found it a little hard from the fresh gash across his chest and robes. He exhaled and settled on remaining focused, as the blow knocked him hard, but he was still far from out. "Is that all you've got?" He had his suspicions as to the function of the headband, but he was one to be a little cautious around new and unfamiliar things.. particularly magical things. For all he knew, it could have somehow been trapped for anyone but the user and activated by wearing it. Playing it safe, he tucked the headband on his belt and looked to Badger. He nodded, agreeing with what he could understand of the gnome, and then turned to Fyhir, a wry grin crawling along the edge of his mouth. "Keep that edge close to her throat Fyhir, I think it may be worth the time to see what this witch can tell us. There may be more dangers yet unknown to us in those mines, particularly of the sword-wielding fellow, and I think it would be in her best interests to divulge knowledge of that, to us," he said out loud to Fyhir ... and maybe she can tell me who the real identity of their leader is... he mentally added... After a moment, the witch begins to speak, in a remarkably accent free common. But her response is not what you had hoped or feared. "Foolish ones. Do you think that I will betray my master? You threaten me, but do you not realize that it is your death that awaits you. You and all who inhabit this place. My master has claimed this mithril mine. It is his, and so am I. Slay me and my strength will return to my master to serve him forever. You cannot stop my master." The witch paused for a moment, and Rook began to puzzle over her words. Probably only lit for Badger to see, as dwarves certainly have no need for light underground, thought Rook as they travelled. It took only a couple of minutes before the pair of heroes could see a side tunnel in the gloom ahead. According to the gnome, the leader should be in a room a few feet down the left branch. Silently they communicated with each other with their eyes and gestures. Hoping to surprise him, the two considered how to act next. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y95/Jindl/MineEncounter_Grid_1.jpg Status Fyhir (7, 31): 61/41 hp, 7/11 pp, vigor (+20 hp) [2 min] Rook (9, 31): 42/25 hp, 10/12 pp, inertial armor (+4 armor) [2 hrs], synesthate [2 min], vigor (+20 hp) [2 min] |

Fyhir concentrates for a moment and raises a forcescreen, then forces his body into a battle ready metabolism with Biofeedback. Then he reaches into his pocket and pulls a powerstone of Precog-Offense and manifests it as well. Finally, FYhir pulls his stone of Precog-Defense from his pouch and manifests it. Perceptions pushing several heartbeats into the future, FYhir looks to Rook to see if he has summoned his own defenses for the battle to come. |
| Huan05-09-05, 07:47 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg Rook saw Fyhir prepare himself, and he too reached into the folds of his cloak to page through his collection of scrolls, but then he paused, as he knew speaking the audbile incantations for these would likely echo down the corridors of the mine and shatter their element of surprise. Heh, what would you do in this situation, Luken old pal? This is your brother anyway..., he thought to himself, and instead settled to mimic Fyhir's motions. Manfiesting as discreetly as possible, Rook gambled and took his time to eliminate any hints of his augmentation. After his physical reactions were heightened, Rook adjusted himself to his swifter motions and clearer body manipulation, and told Fyhir, in a very hushed tone, "You advance first, and I will provide back-up. A dwarf may draw less attention than an elf here, even though you may not look like a miner. If you see him and he does not suspect a thing, do whatever you feel is appropriate. I'll be right behind you... and Fyhir? Be careful..." As soon as he finished this he reached down and pulled out a powerstone. Since I suppose we have a little time, Rook will expend focus to manifest 1pp Offensive Precognition without a display, refocus, expend focus to manifest 1pp Defensive Precognition, refocus again, then ask Fyhir to take the lead. Finally, draw a Powerstone of Energy Ray (ML5). |
| Jindl05-09-05, 08:57 PM | Quietly Rook and Fyhir bend their will to harness the inner power and that of the powerstones they carry. Focusing inward, each manages to hide the display of energy as each new power is formed, although each such expenditure of focus requires them to pause momentarily afterward. As Rook completes his last psionic enhancement the thought occurs to him, Oh dear god, how could I have forgotten? Nell can sense the expenditure of psionic energy! | Huan05-09-05, 09:48 PM | Rook cursed his temporary lack of insight, but it was too late now. Likely Nell was waiting for them now, prepared and unafraid, like a cat waiting outside a mousehole for the mice to come out. Depsite what he said just now, Rook walked along the wall he was on a little bit, kept a sharp ear and eye out, and signalled to Fyhir the status of his progression. Rook will walk at half speed along the right wall, moving as silently as possible, and spotting/listening as best he can, until he reaches the (9,23) spot. After that, he will signal to FYhir if he notes anything, and for him to advance and take the lead. |
| spasheridan05-09-05, 11:16 PM | Fyhir follows, his axe at the ready. The sound of his heavy plate was not something he could easily dampen. After Rook pauses, Fyhir continues to advance. All of my new powers should have a duration of 40 rounds, not 20. Fyhir makes a move and then readies an attack vs an approaching enemy (if I see nothing). Next round another move and ready. |
| Jindl05-10-05, 12:04 AM | Several Move Silently, Hide, Spot, and Listen checks later... Rook moved down the corridor, quiet as a ghost. His eyes made out the shapes of mine carts in the darkness, and his mind sensed a buzz of psionic power around them. Yet he couldn't locate Nell anywhere. Confused, he glanced at the dwarf... Fyhir had tried to be equally silent as he moved along the edge of the mine shaft. Considering the natural creaking and clanking of his plate armor, he wasn't performing too poorly either. Ah, if only I twas wearin' mithril already he thought, wishing for the ease at which he could move silently in the much lighter material. His eyes had also already spotted the carts of ore, though lacking Rook's sensitivity to psychic phenomenom, he didn't notice the mental buzzing around them. RISE AND FACE ME... FOR WE END THIS TODAY!!!" Knowing their acclaimed stealth to be broken, Rook rushed ahead, hoping to face his long-hunted nemesis. He thought about the opportunity for a first strike, but he would not resort to hitting his foe in the back form the dark. No... he wanted the sweet satisfaction of crushing Nell here and now with his own talents.... and at this moment Rook's humanity soke out to him and remarked how unrefined and slightly cutthroat the last desire was... and Rook merely accepted that as the way revenge twisted one's soul... Rook will move to (5,16), and shout out to the figure ... |

| Jindl05-15-05, 01:58 PM | Sorry for the delay. Now, where were we... Fyhir had waited for a nod of confirmation from Rook, after pointing towards the left tunnel and indicating that he saw only 1 creature. But Rook's reaction was much more than a nod. The seer finally lost patience in anticipation of facing his hated foe, and rushed down into the left tunnel, demanding for his enemy to rise and face him. Fyhir was stunned. He didn't realize the normally soft spoken psymage had it in him. He's got courage, I'll give 'em dat., the dwarf thought, admirably, as he rushed to his friend's side. But as their enemy stood from behind the carts of mithril ore, Fyhir wasn't sure who was more surprised. The githyanki leader rose to his feet, the pommel and scabbard of his silvered greatsword glimmering from beneath his dark cloak, and said with a sneer, "You must have mistaken me for someone weaker than you. | Jindl05-15-05, 02:47 PM | As you approach, the leader places his hands together and pushes them outwards, forming an arcane glyph with his nimble fingers. A burst of light surrounds his frame, as he speaks an arcane word, "Dextrakar!" The glow settles into a blueish shield of force which interposes between you. Smiling to reveal several sharp teeth, the githyanki takes a step toward you, drawing his greatsword. As the blade leaves the scabbard, it seems to transform into liquid silver, rippling and flowing from hilt to tip. But, self-reprimand could wait, as there was an undeniably strong foe before them now... he chuckled... a chuckle that was spawned from disbelief initially, but then carried a certain unnatural element to it... his short laugh ended as he shot a fierce glare the githyanki leader. But thanks to his psionic abilities, Fyhir had already seen a split second into the future, and was able to adjust the arc of his swing slightly, allowing the axe to slip past the shield and connect. It wasn't as grevious a wound as the dwarf had hoped, but still he was pleased to draw first blood. Quickly, the githyanki takes advantage of the time Fyhir needs to recover from his swing. But as the mist cleared, his shock turned to an evil laughter, and Rook was horrified to see that his psionic power had failed to break through the fiend's resistance. "Muhahaha. Rather, he forced free thousands of tiny shards of rock and gems form the cavern walls all about them and brought them forth in a field before him. Then shifting his attention to Rook he says, "Pebbles? You assault me with pebbles? Behold, what power my master commands." With that, his eyes began to glow with blueish radiance. Looking at the mine carts, several large chunks of ore began to rise up, covered in the same blue glow. But the githyanki was better prepared this time, and skillfully applied a counter move to escape the dwarf's grasp. His attention again on Fyhir, the githyanki leader stepped back and raised his arm, forming his hand into a claw that slowly closed as if squeezing an imaginary throat. As the leader's eyes began to glow blue again, Fyhir felt bands of force surround his body, constricting tighter and tighter while the githyanki's hand slowly closed. Then, putting away his dagger, he readies his greataxe as he steps closer to the githyanki. Pouring his remaining psionic might into the deep crystal blade, Fyhir prepares for what he hopes will be the final strike of this battle. (Grapple: Fyhir 14 +6 +2 insight +2 animal affinity vs TK 13 +??, pass. 5 ft step to 5, 17. Sheath Dagger. Charge greataxe with 2 pp.) |
| Jindl05-24-05, 11:41 AM | Sensing that the tide of battle is turning against him, the leader of the githyanki tries to escape from Fyhir's advance, back to the carts of ore. But Fyhir is ready, and with a quick swing, he slices deeply into the githyanki leader. As the axe connects, a burst of reddish psionic energy burns deeply into the githyanki's body, causing a devastating wound. (AoO: Greataxe 11 +7 +2 insight +2 animal affinity vs AC ?? +4 shield, hits. Damage = 1d12+7 +2d6 = 18 pts. Leader moves to 4, 12.) Nearly slain by the attack, the leader stumbles the last few feet to the cart of ore. Glaring back and forth between the both of you, he spits forth some blood and then says, "You think you have won, but you have really lost. The day is coming when my master will crush your world beneath his boots. Soon you will all be slaves to my master. Winter T'ok will rule you all!!" Then, as his last sentence echoes through the mine, the githyanki leader places his hand upon the nearest cart of ore and concentrates. A blue glow begins to envelope his body, spreading outwards around the cart of ore. Then, in a flash of blue-white light, they both are gone! |
| Jindl05-24-05, 11:57 AM | Fyhir and Rook remain guarded for a moment or two, expecting the leader to surprise them with another attack. But after a couple of moments, Rook realizes that his last act must have been to transport himself and the cart of ore back to his home plane. The battle, it seems, is over. For now... I expect there to be more RP as the heroes liberate the rest of the dwarves, return to the surface, recieve additional rewards (the mithril ore), and travel back to town. But for now, the quest encounters are officially complete and xp/loot will be noted on the first post of this thread. |
| Huan05-24-05, 10:18 PM | http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Characters/Rook1.jpg "Winter T'ok..." Rook whispered, tasting out the words and commiting them to memory. "I wonder ... what new thread of Fate has been split today ... and how many bew thread spawn from its ends...? This will require.. some research it seems. I am not sure I desire to leave this matter unresolved... nor let our atttacker run free. He is marked and one day I will find him... this I swear. He turned to face Fyhir, a smile opening on his face. He reached to pat the dwarf on the back, but he winced. He gingerly felt his left humerus with is right hand and was almost certain that it was fractured. A likely injury as a result from the crushing rocks earlier, no doubt. He instead reached with his good arm and patted Fyhir on the shoulder, "A well-earned victory for the day it seems, Fyhir... certainly something to remember for your inn later." He found himself still breathing a little heavily. The psymage leaned along the rock wall to catch his breath, but he still kept talking, "It seems there are still mysteries afoot here, Fyhir... but first things first .... let us check up on the status of Dugan's brethren here... down the other end of the fork, no doubt." |
