This is a quest for Kage Nightwind (ECL12) and Pard Longfellow (ECL11). If you are not One_Winged_Angel, MysticMonk2005 or myself, please do not post here until the quest is finished. They are questing about their return from retirement.

Questlog:

Old Bones and Good Times (EL11)

Week 1: A Village is destroyed by a pair of Frost Giants - Kage and Pard avenge the killed populace.
Week 2: A Medusa tricks Pard down to the ground and he gets beaten by an 8-headed hydra. Kage reacts quickly to save the day - though at the expense of Arashi - who turned to stone!
Week 3: A Bone Devil and two hellcats kill Kage before they can do anything. Pard is able to defeat them through greater speed and ranged attacks.

Kage has died and Arashi has been turned to stone.

Resources Used: [Frozen quests don't use up items - however, these are the items that were used during the quest]

Week 1: Pard used a number of arrows and 2 rounds of his Boots of Speed; Kage used his Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds and 8 found potions of Cure Light Wounds.
Week 2: Used remaining 2 Potions of Cure Light Wounds and 3 Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds.
Week 3:

Rewards: [Frozen quests do not give rewards to the players involved. If it did, these are what the rewards would have been]

Week 1: Pard gains 1513xp, 10 potions of Cure Light Wounds (375gp quest-value), 3 Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds (625gp quest value) [all potions here were used during the quest]
Week 2: Pard gains 1387xp. 2 Potions of Cure Serious Wounds (1125gp quest value), Mithril Chain Shirt +1 (1575gp quest value), Gloves of Dexterity +2 (3000gp quest value)
Week 3: Pard gains 1513xp, no treasure
Bonus: Pard gains 1471xp for a bonus and the remaining treasure value.

Pard gains in total 5884xp and 13750gp value - 500gp (for the shared potions used) = 13250gp. Pard can elect to take the equipment above at the listed price or take the rest of his gold value in treasure.

Character Background:
Garbed in strange clothing, Kage is a traveler from a distant land. Called "ronin" by his former homeland, he searches for truth among all the world. Rumors of powerful warriors reached his ears. Eager to again test his skills in combat, he sought out the Coliseum. He was welcomed by many. However, he harbors a small grudge against all who call themselves "samurai." When pressed to reveal the reason for his dislike, he simply mentions freedom and his dishonor. What his dishonor was, he will not reveal. He has few allies, and fewer friends. His dislike for injustice is probably the only thing he shares with paladins or samurai. Aside from this, the only distinguishing characteristics he has are the tattoos of dragons on his arms and the ever present katana at his side. That, and the Sake jug that is a constant. Though he is often drunk on the side of the road, it serves to him as a way to forget his painful past. His loyalty is second to none, and his dedication to the fight just as strong.

The Oathguard (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=3264965#post3264965)
Now, in this new and bold world, Kage is the blade of what is right and honorable. He holds the title of the greatest swordsman of the Arena. Few challenge his prowess with his twin blades, the Hane no Tenshi and the Ikari no Oni, each as different and alike as the sun and moon. His eyes now tell of battles won and his scars tell of battles lost. The sake jug is gone, but he still enjoys a good drink. His companion, Arashi, is perhaps his closest friend, serving as both an ally and a living weapon himself. His other close friends include Pard Longfellow, whom he shares the interest of combat with. The young samurai sees many rising stars among the new gladiators. He hopes they prove as challenging as his previous opponents.

Since Pard's rather slow start in the arena, he has earned a fair amount of fame. With this fame he has earned multiple titles such as The Lord of Bumps, Jindl's Fanboy, or Mages Bane. What remains unchanged however is Pard. He is as hyper and easily distracted as ever and is still rather clumsy.
During his down time during the construction of Gladius and waiting for his league to reopen Pard has taken to instructing the fledgling archers of Gladius. He can more often then not be found leaning back in his chair at the arena's archery range yelling at his inept students until he finaly gets up to show them how its done which leaves them with thier mouths haning open. The rest of the time he can be found out drinking with his friend Kage or flying around on Bill.

Long has it been since these old and weathered heroes have left Gladius. They have been living on their own, in grand houses in the country, talking of women, mead and great battles to their children, friends, and anyone who stopped by for respite. They told long stories of their great deeds in defeating the Archduke who turned out to be a doppleganger. They told of the time they fought against another warrior of the light - but only because it was a misunderstanding.

They told stories.

And they were bored...

Kage and Pard had retired themselves in a quiet part of the countryside - many leagues from Gladius - to the north. Their homes bordered the Frozen lands and were strategically placed because they felt the Frozen lands would probably offer them some challenges from time to time.

But, as has been said of many retirees, they got bored. That is, until the first of the month - when a pair of nomads from the frozen lands came to their homes and requested help.

Great warriors. Quickly, our homes are in grave danger - and for things that we cannot prevent! A pair of Frost Giants have come to the land and they demand human flesh for their meals - and our families are first to be sacrificed to appease them! Please, help us!

We can get started whenever you are ready - go ahead and post. Have fun and good luck!

Kage sat, listening to the nomads' story. As he did, he looked over at Pard. They had been living a good life for a long time. Neither had settled down entirely, though. Kage's family was far away, but Pard's had become a second to him. Their children and friends had become his own. He had almost come to enjoy the quite life.

Almost.

Despite this, he woke as sunrise every morning and went out to train. Pard often came by around noon to practice archery a bit. He was still in peak condition, ready and able to fight almost anyone. In fact, he had shifted his focus, and begun to train not in the traditional Katana and Wakizashi, but in dual Katanas. Long time with little work gave him a chance to explore new tactics, finding ways to attack at different angles, slice in new ways, and even an old trick taught by masters long ago to accelerate himself beyond normal human boundries.

Nevertheless, he was tiring of fighting logs, marionettes, and, when he was lucky, Pard. The Longfellow's were amazing archers, but a bit...lacking in swordsmanship.

When the Nomads had finished, he gestured to Sarah, Pard's sister and housekeeper, to keep them entertained. Meanwhile, he got up and left the room, moving into his small antechamber he kept.

His old blades, the Shiten and Tenken, were hung with his old armor. Nostalgically, he ran his hand over them. He had long since aquired new armor that was lighter and a bit more flexable, but retained the hardness. He had new swords as well, gifts from the Angel Azriel. One, the Hane no Tenshi, was crafted from the feather of an Archangel who commanded thunder. The other, the Ikari no Oni, had the vanquished soul of a demon as it's power. While powerful, it fed off of his own lifeforce, making it a weapon to be used cautiously. The sheild he had enchanted once lay at the ground, useless. He had since learned to control his Ki, or spirit, and made it form a shield.

In the end, Kage knew he and Pard were going. They both were souls that hated evil and could not bear the suffering of others. He walked outside and started towards his little house. He would need time to prepare.

Upon hearing the tale Pard immediatly went to the stables and told Bill all about it. Bill of course agreed something must be done. Pard then went and took his armor down and took up his powerful bow Thanatos Makria. He finaly announced to his family that he and Kage would be leaving and would be gone for some time. For those that listened close Sarah mumbled something about freeloaders. When all was was ready Pard sat atop Bill decked out in shining armor and an impatient grin on his face ready to move out.
"Hurry up Kage! The sun is nearly up! The one day I need you to move and you dally!"
One_Winged_Angel

11-16-05, 05:17 PM
Kage strode out, looking at Pard. It was dawn and Pard was awake...

"You didn't sleep at all, did you?" Kage said with a sigh. Moving up, Arashi flew high in the air. Kage whistled, a sign to come down. The mighty griffon landed with a great cloud of dust rising into the air.

Kage now looked like the samurai he had been, and yet not. He had two katanas, one at each hip. The chain armor he had aquired hung lightly on his shoulders, and a heavy cloak, a mantle and sign of his mastered techniques, hung around him. Flexing his gauntlets a bit, he moved up to Arashi. He checked the stirrups on his companion before nodding.

Turning to the Longfellows, he gave a bow. "Thank you for your hospitality. I hope I can repay you somehow."

So saying, he jumped onto Arashi, feeling the powerful muscled beneath him move. Gods above, but I have missed this.

Looking at Pard's impatient posture, Kage gave a laugh. Leaning over, he gave Arashi a pat on the neck.

"So much for an early retirement, eh partner?" he whispered.

Arashi gave a squak whick Kage took to mean confermation.

Turning to Pard, he threw off a whicked grin.

"Please pardon me if I'm not as eager to do this as you. Somehow, when giants are involved, I have the expectation of recieving quite a bit more in the way of pain than you. Maybe I'll...relive them of a few burdensome weapons. All the same, it's worth it. The greatest warriors of Gladius, side by side? It'll be a sight even the Gods shall enjoy, I think."

So saying, Arashi lauched himself upward. Kage opened his arms, embracing the freedom with his eyes closed, wind on his face.

I have missed this indeed...

Pards parents exchanged smiles with each other at Kages wish to repay them. But he provided them with much more then rent could. The Longfellows did not hide the fact that they housed two of Gladiuses top fighters. Many people far and wide have since come asking with business deals.
Pard laughs at Kage. "Not a wink my friend! And how could I? I havn't had this much excitment in ages!" He waves farelwell to his family and takes off in a cloud of dust. "Pah surely you arn't worried about a couple giants are you? I think you have grown soft over this time! You used to not even think twice about jumping in over your head!"
One_Winged_Angel

As they glide next to each other, Kage growls playfully at the last statement.

"You of all people should know how painful it is to die. Let's just say I never exactly enjoyed the experience. The last time it happened, I was tossed up and down like a child's ball. All the same, I'd prefer that over a giant's morning star. Those spikes...hurt..."

And what's more, before, I had nothing, wanted nothing. I sought death as it sought me. Now...I have somthing to return to. A reason to exist beyond fighting.

"And that is what makes you stronger."

Kage nearly fell off Arashi at the last. What was that voice. Trying to shake it off with Pard's nonsense, he rode on.

Telin, just a forewarning, Mystic and I hold the record for longest consecutive roleplay in the old roleplay thread. It involved vacation, little sleep, late hours, and a great deal of caffeen. In other words, when we start acting stupid, please tell us.

The Frozen Quests are supposed to be mostly role play. Its going to take me a little while to accustom myself to your characters so play all you want. I'll make sure it progresses along at a brisk but manageable pace.

In other words - you guys are doing great and I feel honored to be the first doing a frozen quest. I hope you both appreciate the tongue-in-cheek of the "thawing" of your characters with a couple of Frost Giants...

The two undaunted warriors fly fast to the village to which the nomads directed them. It was a reasonable day's hike by foot - but with the great speed of Arashi and Bill - they made the distance in just a few hours.

What they saw however, was a horror to behold.

The village, or what could be called as such for a nomadic culture, was composed of about two dozen ornate tents that were easily set up and taken down. The entire village was composed of maybe thirty families, who all moved with the tracks of the herds of the northern wastes. Or at least, they did once.

Kage saw the first of the wreck - all of the tents torn to shreds - the people of the village tossed to the ground with little care to where they fell. Several were not even whole - having been skinned and flayed for eating later. One thing that Kage could be sure of was that this was no chance destruction.

Pard glimpsed movement from the corner of his eye as they approached. Slowing Bill with an unspoken command, Pard took a longer look - finally seeing what it was: a small boy - hiding amongst the snow in stark white furs.

Urging Arashi down to get a better look, Kage wished he hadn't.

Landing among the nomadic tribe, he was stunned. He had never seen this kind of slaughter before. Battlefieds, certainly. Warzones where thousands met to do battle. Clean kills were one thing, but this...this was monsterous.

Landing, he saw the bodies of men, women, and children. Or the pieces of what had once been. Those who were flayed seemed to grimace at him, blaming him for not being there sooner...The smell assaulted his nostrils. And the silence deafened him. So many...

Fighting the desire to sick up, Kage moved away. His nose couldn't take any more. Laying his hands on his katanas, he swore an oath of vengence, which would only cease when whoever had done this lay dead or he himself could no longer draw breath.

Arashi nudged his arm with his head in a very canine gesture, then turned his head toward Pard. The archer looked ready to land...

Pard noded and Bill glided down to where the boy was. When he was close Pard hailed him. "Hey! Boy! You ok? We are here to end your troubles!" And Bill lands lightly on the snow near the boy. Pard leaps off Bill and offers his hand and a wide grin.

Kage moved over to Pard, looking at the boy. Pard was forcing a smile, despite the situation. Probably to try to cheer the boy up a bit. Kage has no such delusion. He had lost his family before. No manner of smiling or friendly gestures and words would cheer the boy up.

Kage examined the boy at a short distance, looking for obvious wounds or problems with him. Unlike Pard, Kage offered no reassurance, no false hopes. Pard had never had to lose his family. They may not always accept him, but they loved him nonetheless. Kage had, long ago, watched his family die. His father had been lost to war, but his mother, sister and brothers had been put to the sword. Any memory of them had been stricken from records. He was not allowed to even speak their names. The boy would never again be the same as he had been.

Turning his attention, he looked around, looking for any signs of other survivors. Or any enemies that might still lurk. It also spared him the pain of rememberance as well as looking freshly at the pain of the child.

I'm kinda hoping for a generic description of the boy as well as any obvious wounds, broken bones, etc.

The frightened boy slowly emerges from the snow. Although too scared to speak, he is clearly thankful to have the presence of such a good figure in front of him. He nods slowly to indicate that he is unharmed.

The damage to his life though is clearly evident.

Pard turns to look at Kage, but as soon as he does, he catches sight of something observing them. He's not clear of what it was, since it quickly ducked back behind a huge boulder, some 300ft away - but the boulder is easily large enough to hide most figures - giants included.

Sorry about the hugeness of the map - but this is the only way I can get it to work right now.

r indicates a rock. The isolated rocks are 5ft high, otherwise, they are 10ft, 15ft or even 20ft high (depending on the size of the rock grouping).

> indicates a raised portion from where you are now. It increases the height of everything to the right of it by 10ft. It is climbable and usable as cover.

For the most part, the ground is solid tundra and reasonable to walk through unhindered (not that I'm expecting you to stay on the ground - but hey its worth mentioning...).

If you have any questions about the terrain - let me know and I'll try to answer. Otherwise - it is Pard's action.

Pard quickly hops onto Bill (I need to roll a 2 or higher to pass) "Take cover kid. Looks like we arn't alone. OYE! KAGE! WE GOT COMPANY!" Pard urges Bill to take flight while drawing his bow and notching an arrow. (I'm kinda rusty on my geometry. But I'm going up at 60degrees and double moving for a totle of 120 ft. in the direction of the giant Pard saw.) "Heh finaly some fun eh Bill? Lets go kick some giant ass!"

Hearing Pard's warning, Kage curses. He should have been paying better attention. Drawing the Hane no Tenshi, he holds it, blade out, in front of his face. Placing two fingers behind it, he lets out an incantation.

Kami, mamoru watashi!

A shimmering field appeared in front of him, tangible and visual, that would protect him from harm, although it drained him slightly. He begins to calculate what he should do...

In other words, Kage isn't doing anything except what he would normally do before a fight.

Pard leaps (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=190394) (barely...) onto Bill and Bill vaults into the air. (7,5, 40ft in the air)

This is just the surprise round, so one move, and then you'll get your full round actions in just a second...

The giant that Pard can see lofts a boulder at Kage from the safety of his rock barrier, and another giant, behind the same grouping lofts another boulder at him (apparently deciding that the slow one must be the bigger threat). However, both boulders come up short (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=190395) and only strike near his feet.

Pard urges Bill to keep climbing. "They are focusing on Kage, lets see if we can't draw some attention from him!" He fires two arrows at the closest giant.(+17,+17 and Bill is double moving towards them and up, and fire and shock are activated so its same dmg.)

I'm wondering if I can spot them at this point. Whether or not I can will affect what happens next for Kage.

Pard urges Bill forward to (15,13,100ft) and fires down on the closest (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=191290) giant (forgot to include -2 for double move and -2 for distance - but they both hit anyway). [17 and 17 damage = 34 total]

Kage can't necessarily see them from his vantage point, but he know exactly where they are (boulders lobbing from a conspicuous set of rocks...)
One_Winged_Angel

11-19-05, 01:53 PM
Kage quickly darts towards Arashi, mounting fast. He hops on and keeps Hane no Tenshi in his hand. Moving up, he moves to near where Pard is in an attempt to spot the giant. However, he also does his best to remain between the rock where he knows the giant lurks and the boy.

Gripping his sword, he looks for the giant...
TelinArtho

11-20-05, 11:53 AM
Kage orders Arashi to ascend and the muscular griffon jets into the air towards the direction of the source of the boulders and the target of Pard's arrows (18,24,55ft high). Now in the air, he is able to see the source of the attacks - a pair of frost giants - just like the nomads had warned them of.

Just as he catches sight of them, another pair of rocks comes towards him (one from each giant). Both rocks miss (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=192352) wildly (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=192351)

Kage looks at the set up of the giants. Hesitant as he is to leave Pard, he wants to get close enough to engage the giants in melee. Observing the Giants, he focuses on their equipment, looking for vulnerabilites. Survaying the landscape, he tries to come to a descision...

I am going with the assumption neither Giant has yet drawn melee weapons. Am I correct?

Muttering under his breath about backline fighters, Kage takes up his sword and moves to within charging/diving range, gaining altitude. Drawing his sword, into a defensive posture as Arashi tenses, waiting for the next rock. They wait for the giants to make a wrong move...

Kage moves and takes full defense this round. Arashi does likewise.

Pard urges Bill forward and lets loose some arrows [first two (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=193103), then the third (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=193106) (not confirmed (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=193107))]. Only one of the three arrows connects with the giant (though the other two impact the cover of rock it is hiding behind). [15 damage]

Kage points at the speeding duo and tells Arashi to speed things up a little, but are still far behind Pard.

I have two locations for Kage - either at (29,24,95ft) - which would be a double move or (58,29,95ft) - which would be running. Obviously, your AC is a little lower if you are running - but otherwise, you are taking your dear sweet time... Let me know which you'd rather and I'll continue.

How about running behind the rocks in the upper corner?

The giants hurl (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=194067) their boulders at Bill. Pard does his best (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=194068) to avoid the attacks, but one still connects hard with Bill. [13 damage]

Kage, getting sick and tired of hearing Pard's voice, directs Arashi around the rocks and into battle. Raising his Katana above his head in a position for a blow to the head, he attempts to get behind the giant and attack it's yet undrawn weapon.

Kage attempts to get within range and use a sunder attempt on the undrawn Axe. No opposed check, just attack and damage. Also, remember Kage ignores hardness less than 20 due to adamantine blades.

Kage directs Arashi to approach the giant. Just as he comes into range though, the giant reaches out to grab (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=194933) Kage and pulls him off of Arashi - though Arashi defends (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=194935) Kage as best as he can [11 damage to Kage, 10 damage to Ferroste - Kage is grappled]

Actually, I have a question: don't I get an attack of opp for the giant attempting to grapple me? The only reason is if I hit, I negate the grapple. If not, attempt to break the grapple. Not that I have much hope of that...

The AoO that you provoked was when you moved out of the 10ft range - since he has a 10ft reach. Then after the successful touch, he moves into your space, which provokes an AoO from Arashi.

Kage tries to break free of the grapple (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195149), but fails to do so.

Well, let's make this more interesting then.
"Arashi, to me!"

Looking at the giant, Kage can't help but grin. This would be a fight to remember...

Arashi will attempt to grapple with the giant. On his next action, Kage will aid Arashi in the grapple. And we will both pray that Pard doesn't go too trigger happy...

"Hmm right. Well those two having fun with the giant makes it difficult for me. Fly in close Bill." Bill flys closer to the giant and Pard quickly fires two arrows at the giant.

Pard moves in and quickly fires off two more arrows (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195310) at the giant. Unfortunately, the giant twists around enough with Kage that both arrows strike at him instead (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195313), and they quickly find their mark. [42 damage]

Kage curses at his companion to learn how to shoot before commanding Arashi to join (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195314) him and helps his griffon to hurt the giant. Arashi tries to join (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195316) in on the fun (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195324), but the giant just pushes him away.

I don't know if you realized this, but the giant has a +23 grapple mod, you have a +18 and Arashi has only a +15. Just a thought...

Ferroste squeezes (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195319) Kage (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195320) some more, but Kage is able to resist the worst of it. [10 damage]

Kage coughs blood, still writhing as the giant squeezes the air from his lungs.

I...I...will...not...die...like...this.. .

So thinking, Kage lets out a shout, trying to break free. Arashi moves around, setting up for a full attack on the giant.

Kage could feel the life slipping away. His thoughts went to all his friends. One strayed on Azriel. Funny, that death could seem so comforting while fighting for your life.

To Kage, it seemed the grandest joke in the world. He started laughing, even as tears of pain streamed down his cheeks.

Pard, thinking quickly, drops his bow, draws his lance while Bill closes in on the grappling giant. He thrusts it forward once the lance is in reach (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300055) and catches the giant in the back. [10 damage]

Arashi, listening to Kage's weakening words, thrusts all of his attacks (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300057) against the giant in an attempt to get the giant to release him. The fierce beast connects with its bite and a claw, rending (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300058) some of the giant's flesh and forcing the giant to cry out in pain. [17 damage]

Kage twists in the giant's grasp (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300059) and does his best (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300060) to get out (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300061). However, the giant proves just too strong for him.

The giant doesn't appreciate being teamed up on, so he tries to squeeze (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300062) the last bit of life out of his held opponent, so he can move on to the others. Pard and Bill move away from the giant, but not before the giant gets a quick swipe of the axe (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300167) against Bill. However, Pard is able to make Bill turn away from the blow, and make it to his bow without harm - which Bill picks up in his mouth.

Kage bleeds (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300170). Arashi tears at the giant as well, but cannot pierce his thick hide (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300171)

The giant charges the landed Pard, swinging the mighty axe (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300168). Pard dodges too late, however, and feels the axe crack into his back. [22 damage] Almost a crit - that would've been REAL bad...

Bill jumps away from the frost giant just as the giant prepared to level him and his rider with a great axe blow. The giant quickly picks up a boulder and tosses (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300376) it after the fleeing pair, but the boulder flies far left of them. Kage bleeds (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300379) and Arashi withdraws from the giant.

I'm assuming you'll plug him full of arrows at this point.

Pard then starts firing (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300365) away (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300368) at the giant (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300373). [86 damage]

Kage bleeds (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300380) some more.

The giant makes one last throw (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300377), before collapsing from the extent of his injuries.

Pard directs Bill down to Kage as quickly as he can and produces a potion out of Kage's belt pouch. He then forces the liquid down Kage's throat until Kage returns to consciousness. [10 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=300383) damage healed]

Kage and Pard return to the young boy and find that he is elated and sad at the defeat of the giants - mostly because most of the people he knew were dead and that he had no where to go.

Just then, the two nomads who had come to Kage and Pard in the first place arrived, on a pair of horses from Pard's stables. Quickly understanding that the giants were defeated, they took the boy with them and set to returning to Pard's home (where they've been invited to stay for a short while by Pard's family).

To the south, Pard notices a stream of smoke coming out of the Swamps of Thrais - a stream of smoke that does not seem quite right in the midst of the swamp. And, judging from the distance, it is from a fire that is consuming a large portion of the swamp.

Kage sniffs the air. Fire and ice. He was beginning to think that his life was growing more complex by the second.

Finding what he can, he hops on Arashi and looks at Pard.

"I'm not sure. Still, fire at this time doesn't feel right. If it's fire giants, I swear I'm going to kill someone..."

A little klugy... but oh well...

The nomads are able to recover 10 potions of Cure Light Wounds and 4 potions of Cure Moderate Wounds from the destroyed town - and they give them to the pair as thanks for avenging the deaths of their small numbers.

They spend a few more hours recovering what little else they can, before returning in the direction of Pard's home.

Pard inspects the fire from a higher perspective and finds that it is a large fire indeed - and is several hours away. Thankfully, it is beyond the arctic reaches - but it is still in a rather inhospitable swamp.

Kage and Pard streak as fast as they can to the source of the flames, but by the time they arrive - they find them extinguished, although the area is still littered with ash, smoke and smoldering trees and swamp brush.

In the midst of the burnt out area - the duo notice a cloaked figure, kneeling by the edge of a pool of swampy water - hood drawn. By the looks of things, the figure appears to be crying and as they approach, Pard thinks he hears the same.

I'll post a real map when I get a chance, but you guys can proceed if you like. The pool of water is large, murky - like most swamp water. The strip of land upon which the figure kneels is 40ft long and 10-15ft wide - with the figure about halfway along the long side.

Worried but feeling on edge, Kage glances around for anything unusual. With a nod of the head toward Pard, Kage gives a shout.

All the same, Kage focuses to bring up his barrier and draws his blade, lightning crackling around it. He tightens the mantle around himself.

I do not know who set fire to my home. It took most of my power to put it out - but I suspect devils are the cause - for I saw some leave to the south just before I came here.

Please - help me. My crocodile companion has gone underwater - though I do not know why. Can you help me recover her?

...Telin, that was unhappy. I feasably have near no chance of taking a hydra. *sigh*

Cursing, Kage decides to try something new. Realizing he has almost no chance of taking on a hydra with a possible caster behind him, he quickly thinks. Instead of diving onto the hydra, he takes an idea from the last fight.

Kage drops the sword and puts his body and soul into a few more swings (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=304661). He connects twice, the second swing cleaving (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=304666) off the medusa's head. Her body tumbles to the ground without much ado - leaving Kage almost alone. Alone that is until Bill lands comfortingly next to Pard.

Hoping to at least delay the inevitable, Kage moves over to Pard. His only potion left will only delay Pard's inevitable end. And the matter of Arashi makes things all the more complex.

Grimacing, he lifts Pard up and forces a potion down his throat. He devides them evenly, two cure moderates for himself and two for Pard. He then gives himself a potion of cure light wounds and gives the other to Pard.

Kage then takes the Ikari no Oni and places it back in its scabbard. The sword was powerful, but it was at a heavy cost. Sighing, he looks at Arashi. Maybe one of the Nomads knows something to cure him...

If not, it looks like a long walk to find a cure...

Well, that was good and very, very bad at the same time. At least I proved Kage can deal pain when he wants to. Now what...?

Pard spluters and coughs as he awakens. "Woo did anyone catch the number on that cart?" He spys the slain beasts. "Nice Kage, seems were even." Pard then notices Arashi. "Oh man sorry about Arashi. We will get him cured though!"

12-03-05, 03:04 AM
Grinning despite himself, Kage looks at Pard.

"Maybe I can trade the Medusa's head for a cure. I hear they fetch a good price sometimes. Or maybe I'll keep it as a trophy."

Moving over to Arashi, Kage runs his hand along his friends now frozen form.

"Don't worry, my friend. We'll find a way to get you back to normal."

Turning back to Pard, Kage says, "Looks like I'm walking from here on out. Keep an eye out. You'll have a better view of the terrain than I will."

"Right, I'll let you know the moment I see anything." Pard gathers all the items he placed on the ground and hops on Bill to take a look around.

Searching the body of the medusa - Kage finds that she was wearing a fine Mithril Chain Shirt and some gloves of an ornate and durable quality that struck out to him.

She also carried 2 potions of an unknown nature.

Now, given the time to rest - it seems they are called forth again as more flames erupt into the sky nearby.

I presume you will heal as much as you can with the 2 CLW potions and 3 CMW potions. If you want to try the remaining two - you are welcome to - but how would you like to distribute the ones you've got now. (I'm assuming CLW on Pard just to get him conscious at least...)

Pick which ones go to which character:

2 CLW, 3 CMW (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=305102)

Kage looks at the flames to the south. He is divided between helping his friend and helping those in need.

Maybe he can find both if he goes toward the fire. Sighing, he starts through the muck at a warisome pace.

Pard looks to see what he can find from his high vantage point upon Bill of the area the fire is in and the lands between.
TelinArtho

12-04-05, 09:33 AM
Pard estimates he should be able to get to the fire in about 10 minutes - though given the Kage has to travel by foot - he figures triple that time on foot - or even greater.

From the distance it appears the medusa wasn't lying entirely - devils seem to be at work. Pard can only make out one though (and even that one is too far away to describe).

Pard, with his greater view of things is able to see their opponent before Kage. When Kage is about 100ft away from the creature, Pard let's him know with a quick whistle and soon Kage is able to see it himself.

It appears to be some sort of devillish creature - its head, and most of its body white as bone and seemingly as hard. It also had a long tail - similar to a scorpion's - even with a stinger on the end. It stood as tall as an ogre - but seemed much more powerful because of its bony makeup.

It hasn't seemed to notice either hero quite yet (it is busy setting fire to a nearby tree...)
One_Winged_Angel

Let's see if we can't wrap this up.

With a gesture, Kage indecates that Pard should harry their opponent with arrows while Kage prepares. This will be an interesting fight.

[Here's the map (with some notes included...) - while you can prep as much as you want, you'll only get a single shot in when you are ready for the surprise.

Rocks are 10 by 10, but only 5ft high.
Shrubs are likewise good for cover, but not for total cover. You can move through it as hampered terrain (double movement cost)
Trees block movement but do not block LOS.
Tree groups block movement and LOS.
Anything in red is fire - move through it at your own risk.

The orange squares is the devil described above; Lightblue is Bill/Pard; Red is Kage.

Any questions just let me know.

Kage sees the arrow fired and grins. Time for action.

Throwing his cloak off, he feels the weight lift off his shoulders. Feeling the power in his legs build. Crouching, he draws both his swords and looks towards his opponent. Suddenly, without warning, he blurs. To Pard, it looks as though he disappeared from sight leaving a cloud of dust in his wake.

Suddenly, Kage appears right next to the Devil. With a grin, he brings his swords in front of him, crossed.

"Hey there."

Round 1

Although Kage had hoped to get the jump on the devil by appearing right next to it, he found himself quite suddenly aware that the bone devil was not alone.

Two hulking cat-like forms, barely visible as the pounced on him, tore into his flesh (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=309080) (they are invisible in light - so there's a +2 to all of the rolls I didn't include there...) - leaving him in a horrible state (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=309081) (once again). [30 damage]

Kage fights (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=309082) off the second creature's attempt to take him down.

Then the bone devil disappears from sight.

Kage and Pard activate their items to give them sight of the invisible creatures. Kage is facing two large cat-like devils, while the Bone Devil has moved away about 30ft.

Kage doesn't get to watch for long, as the hellcats tear (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=309345) into him once more, connecting with claws and bites to pull him apart in every way. [Minimum damage from 3 claws and 1 bite is 26 damage]

The bone devil concentrates for a moment and then rises 30ft straight up.

The bone devil follows after them, but cannot keep up.

Pard continues firing knowing he can't keep this increased speed up all day.
TelinArtho

12-09-05, 11:49 PM
Actually, looking things over - considering Bill's flight speed - you'll have no problem keeping out of range of any offensive power the bone devil can use and can fire arrows ad infinitum at him...

If you want - you can take your time finishing it off - but you can consider the encounter dealt with if you choose...
MysticMonk2005

Pard sighs as the last demon is felled. He signals Bill to land near Kages broken remains and gathers his friend to be revived. "Well Bill, I think we learned something. Don't march into the wilderness like you were fighting a single fight in the colaseum... We got a long walk back home..."
