Somewhere high above the city of gladius, and elf and a dwarf wake up chianed to a large wooden wall. Their primary weapon and backpack missing, they peer around grogily as they regain their senses.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a12/erew1/GridBrig.jpg

(you guys are at (6,3) and (6,9), respectively, assuming bottom left is zero.
Snommelp

09-14-05, 04:16 PM
(6, 3) and (6, 9)? But it's a 5 by 6 map!

Sam looks around, taking in his surroundings. I wa'n' drinkin', so I'm no' drunk... how'd I get 'ere? And... with an elf?! Sam does a double-take when he sees Aerandir, then calls out to him. "'Ey, elf! Ya know what in Moradin's name's goin' on 'ere?"
While he's talking, Sam will test the strength of his chains.
Shaken, not Stunned

09-14-05, 07:20 PM
Well, officially that is (6,6) and (6,7), but you guys are really dizzy.

The chains are heavy with use and rusted by blood from the laceration they have caused on previous detanee's wrists. They groan and squeel as the dwarf rolls them around in their sockets.
Ellorion Saenelle

09-14-05, 09:48 PM
Aerandir struggles to become fully conscious.
Wha, who's there?
His eyes just begin to clear, as his expression turns to one of disgust.
Oh, great. It couldn't have been a devil?
Shaken, not Stunned

09-14-05, 11:12 PM
Please make all rolls under "Giants Over Gladius" on Invisbile Castle.

As the heads of our intrepid (and in-trap-ed) adventurers slowly clear, a pair of large, grumbling humanoids can be heard rummaging through bags and trading jokes in a gutteral, deep language that sounds like rolling, rocky hills.

"Save it, elf. 'T looks like we go' bigger problems." Sam strains against his bonds, trying to break free.

Aerandir, not wanting to get shown up by a dwarf, tries to pull as hard as he could.
strength-4 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=150396)
Mphphhh, huh-huh-huh. Boy, these are some strong chains.
Shaken, not Stunned

09-15-05, 05:44 PM
With a mighty heave, the dwarf pulls on his chains. The metal groans and squels. Suddenly the left chian pops and a link soars into the ceiling, embedding its self deeply. The chain lashes around and strikes againts the dwarf's mighty forearm, leaving a bright-red welt. His right arm is still bound to the wall, although the plank to which the chain is anchored shows obvious signs of strain, and a few splitners are rising out of the wall.

The elf attempts a similar feat, but finds that either his chains are in better shape or he is not. The rusty iron grates against its self, shedding rust to the floor as the the weight redistributes its self.

Rumbling voices rise outside into something of an argument. The shiny blade of a great-sword rises biefly into view through the bars that make up the door, but it quickly falls away. The deep, deliberate speakers on the other side of the door seem to be arguing over who gets to keep it.
Snommelp

09-15-05, 05:49 PM
"Elves... canna' tell Adamantine from rustin' nickel. Gimme a second, I'll help ye oot." Sam grabs the right chain with both hands and pulls (Strength Check 12 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=150748)).
Sam sees the flash of the sword. "Tha' yers? I know 't ain't mine. Hurry, or 't'll belon' t' whoever jailed us."
Shaken, not Stunned

09-15-05, 06:04 PM
Sam gives another mighty pull, and though it appears as if the wooden wall will give way at any moment, Sam appears to have just given way. He pauses for a moment and takes a breath.
Ellorion Saenelle

09-15-05, 10:24 PM
Aerandir also sees the sword flash through the bars.
Yeah, that's mine. They had better be ready to hand it over when I get out of here.
Aerandir takes another stab at the chains.
strength check=18 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=150923)
It's kind of wierd though, that they would take my sword, and not my bow.
Shaken, not Stunned

09-15-05, 10:51 PM
They did take your arrows, most regrettably. Or your quiver at least. They seem to have a done a very hasty job in disarming you.

With a sudden, powerful step forward, Aerandir's sinewy body tears it's self free from the wall in a single, graceful motion. His left arm is weighted down by ten feet of rusty iron chain, while his left is free accepting a single, garrish iron bracelet that appears to be padlocked in place.

The belowing voices outside stop suddenly. A low grumbling issues forth, followed by a chuckle and the sound of heavy feet plodding off in an indecernable direction.
Ellorion Saenelle

09-16-05, 12:12 AM
Ah that's better. Here let me help you with that.
I'm not sure how you want to make the roll for both of us pulling on it together.

For a brief moment it appears as though the chain will give way with snap, but at what appears to be the moment before the chain is fractured, the anchor-point gives way, tearing a two-and-a-half foot wide hole in the wall.

Through the window, a sunrise can be seen. Golden rays of sunlight peirce through the clouds, painting the snow-covered peaks of the northern mountain ranges a fiery orange. The clouds drift by dreamily, the sun highlighting each with a pink lining. It appears as though you are very, very high above the earth.

Sam is now free, though he is dragging a 10-foot chain with a five pound ball-and-socket assembly on the end. The entire shackle weighs around 25lbs and imposes a -4 on move silently checks.
Snommelp

09-16-05, 07:30 PM
"Ach, wun'erful... well, let's git yer sword an' see 'f we cin fin' the key to this gods-forsaken chain." More out of frustration than anything else, Sam stomps the chain twice quickly (damage=12 minus hardness (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151512)).
Shaken, not Stunned

09-16-05, 11:37 PM
Rust and dust are kicked up into the air and scattered about as the powerful dwarf lays into the iron chain. Sadly, little damage is dealt to the actual chian.

The only obvious exit (other than the hole in the side of your prison) is the door at (4,3).
Snommelp

09-17-05, 02:16 AM
Sam looks over to Aerandir. "Ye're bein' awful quiet, elf. Decided no' t' take back yer sword af'er all? I go' no use fer i', so don' 'spec' me t' get i' fer ye." Sam moves towards the door to see what he can see.

The dwarf carefully picks his way towards the door, avoiding a rotten board here and there. The door appears to be made of some sort of wood with iron bards across a six inch by six inch window. The belowing voices on the other side continue to squabble about soemthing that one might think to be the sword, but it could be anything. The door has no handle, and appears to be held shut by a lever with a key-hole, something akin to a bar, but covering only half the door an presumably locked in place.
Snommelp

09-19-05, 12:18 AM
Where'd Ellorion go? This could be a difficult quest if that elf is just going to stand around in the jail cell...
Shaken, not Stunned

09-19-05, 05:23 PM
I sent a PM to him yesterday and have yet to hear a response. In the interest of being fair, consider him NPC'd until he posts again. Feel free to continue.
Ellorion Saenelle

09-19-05, 06:59 PM
Aerandir starts shaking his head.
Sorry about that, I was way too deep in thought. Now about that sword.
Aerandir looks throught the bars into the next room.

Sorry I had to take off for the weekend. It was one of those last minute things.
Snommelp

09-19-05, 07:13 PM
Understood. We're going to need to get things going, though, if we want to finish this quest in three weeks. Enter the dwarf...
"Bah, I dunno why ye bother lookin'. Le's break dow' th' door an' get ye' ye're sword back!" Sam readies to charge the door, but will wait for Aerandir to get out of the way first.
Ellorion Saenelle

09-19-05, 08:42 PM
Well if that's the way you feel like doing things.Aerandir gladly takes a step back. I'll even give you a push if you want.

If we end up going over the three weeks, I'll pay for the both of us.
Snommelp

09-19-05, 08:59 PM
Let's worry about that if it happens, and not until then

Sam looks at the door, prepares to charge, then changes his mind. He walks up to it calmly and slams both of his fists into it, near the locking mechanism.

Attack rolls 8 and 20 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=153141)
Damage = 9 and 10 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=153141)

Should I be making an attack roll for this, or is just damage fine?
Shaken, not Stunned

09-19-05, 09:33 PM
I think we can assume oyu have enough time to line up your attack, something which takes a full round, IIRC.

The dwarf plants his rough and boney hands into the door in one smooth, forceful motion kicking up dust in a cloud moving slowly away from the door and leaving deep indentations on the old wood. A few cracks slowly roll out from the imprinted fists as Sam pulls his hands back. The hinges on the door have bent in slightly, and the half-bar blocking the door is splintering visibly.

The voices outside suddenly stop. After a brief pause, a deep, simple laughter echos forth from just below the window. "Stupid smalling. You fight later, not now!" anounces a playful voice clearly issud forth from a very large, powerful creature.

"Yea, no get tired yet, you need streng't to fight." agrees a second voice of a similar nature. Sam and Aerandir are suddenly very confident you could pound the living tar out what ever or who ever that is. Clearly they are struggling to speak common, and they seem to be overconfident.
Snommelp

09-19-05, 10:04 PM
Sam exchanges a look with Aerandir. "This migh' no' be as fun as I thou'... wha'e'er they are, I dou' they'll las' long. Ye'll have ye're sword soon enough, lad. Th' door shoul' give af'er mah nex' hit, so be readeh."
Ellorion Saenelle

09-19-05, 10:43 PM
Well we better hurry up. Once I get my sword back, and watching you swing with those fists, nothing should be able to stand in our way.
Snommelp

09-19-05, 10:58 PM
"Righ', then, le's do i'."

Sam winds up for another pair of swings (damage = 5+7 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=153187)) and strikes the door again.
Shaken, not Stunned

09-20-05, 07:05 PM
With a bueatiful drop-kick, Sam jars the door violenlty, actually breaking one of the bars off of the door and splitting the wood nearly in half.

One of the large creatures on the other side of the door mumbles something in a stange language, accentuating "O's" and slurring "R's." The two things stand up and one pushes the side of the door open before chidng, "Naughty smalling, I whack you now!"

The dwarf and the elf can make out two large, shadowy figures, the one furthest away partially obscured by the door.

In one swift, direct motion, the dwarf feints with an attack and follows with a powerful thrust of his fist, connecting solidly with the creatures sternum. The humanoid thing sprawls backwards as the force of the blow resonates through its body. Despite the pain this caused, it looks very angry.

It steps forward quickly and attempts to grab on to dwarf, who effortlessly re-directs his attempt.

The second hulking monster lurches forward at almost the same time and laches on to Aerandir with violent force, slamming him into the wall. The elf's head snaps back to the wooden surface and leaves a bloody smear in passing.

As the dwarf sends the first half-giant tumbling past his shoulder, he delivers a powerful round-kick to the beast bashing the elf's head against the wall. The creature's knee crumples sideways, but it continues to vicously attack the elf, who rolls with the blows as best he can until the hulking creatures grabs his shoulder and head in a massive hand.

The giant dismissed by Sam stumbles and rounds on the dwarf, a shining greatsword peering out of the darkness. With a clumsy lunge, he slices a tear in the monk's kilt and leaves a deep gash in the wooden floor.

I need a grapple check from Aerandir (Don't feel bad, I am rolling like crap, too. Check for your self).

Sam is chuggin' right along makin' giant soup. No one has taken any damage this round as of yet.

The giant's massive form closes in on Aerandir, its gigantic paw rapping around his left shoulder. As the hulking shape reaches for the elf's head, Aerandir plants his foot firmly on the creature's instep and drives his fist into the grappling giant's nose. Blood flows across the floor and coats the front of Aerandir's armor, but the wound appears cosmetic. The creature staggers backward holding his face as blood leaks through his fingers.

Aerandir gets the feeling he was very lucky to have avoided that grapple. The half-giants are now both inside the cell. Aerandir is in the square immidiately sout-east from the door, and Sam is one square west. One half giant is to the east of him, the other to the south-east of Aerandir (assuming "up" is north).

Deciding the elf might want his sword, Sam slams his fists into the ugly creature (Attacks 21, 16, damage 9, 7 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=154448)).

By the way, Sam's not wearing a shirt. It's just kilt and cloak. Just look at the picture.

As the half giant staggers backwards, Sam reaches up and grabs his forhead. In one fluid motion, he brings his leg around behind the hulking creature and pulls down on its forhead, driving the creature's skull into the wooden floor. The shimmering greatsword falls to the groud at the feat of the elf.

Moving swiftly, Aerandir picks up his sword and stands just in time to see the second half-giant lunging forward with a look of pure rage on his face. With the casual and graceful motion of a practiced swordsman, the elf swings his sword in a wide arc. The body of the half-giant tumbles past him and into the hall, a deep, blood red gash across its chest.

You can barely make out the sound of hasty foot steps echoing from the south. You see your bags and weapons in a pile on the floor, clearly rummaged through by the giants.

Also, I made one error earlier on. Because the half-giants were wearing spiked gauntlets, Aerandir's 9 damage is lethal, not subdual. Sorry.
Ellorion Saenelle

09-21-05, 11:21 PM
Well, that went pretty well. Now to see how to get out of here.
Aerandir gathers up his stuff, and then continues to use detect evil here on out.

"Firs' thin's firs', I'm gettin' this blasted chain offa me arm!" Sam will search the giants for a key to the accursed chain on his arm, also taking anything that belongs to him or looks like it might belong to Aerandir.

The dwarf bends over the bludgeoned half giant and begins searching his pockets and pouches for a key. His hands pass over a buldging pocket, in which he finds two unmarked keys, a wooden stick 6 inches across with a miniscule diamon mounted at the tip in such a way that the point is recessed, and a small pouch with a note. A search of the other giant reveals nothing. The foot steps coming from the south accelerate to a run and grow louder. Time is short.

All your material goods have been returned. Aerandir detects no evil. Neither Aerandir nor Sam know which key should be used, but they are clearly different. Both are bronze, but the similarities end there.

"'ere, take this, it migh' be somethin' ye can use." Sam passes the stick and note (wand and scroll?) to Aerandir and quickly tries both keys on his manacles.

09-22-05, 08:02 PM
The dwarf quickly shoves the polished bronze key into his manacle, which immidiately emmits an elctrical jolt. The second key removes the manacles.

Aerandir quickly scans the note. It reads, "Smuglug, Humperniks, you have served me well these five years. Many prisoners have tried to escape, and only three have gotten away. As such please report to my room to collect a significant bonus to your usual pay."

It also talks aobut numerous other common and boring topics, though strangely this was the only section not in giant.

Sam takes one damage from electrical manacles.

Could Aerandir please make a knowledge: religion check (if you have any ranks).

Sorry, I don't have any type of knowledge skills.
I wonder what this wand does.
Aerandir reads as much of the note as we can.
I can't believe what these vile creatures have been doing. They have to be stopped.
He hands the note back to Sam for him to read.

The two half giants look at each other and give a half-hearted, mildly dull laugh. They exchange a few quick words in giant and pull out a couple of spears. Each looks to be made of a hardwood and tipped with bronze or specially treated steel.

The first giant takes a skip forward and hurls a spear in the general direction of sam, but it instead plows through the ceiling. A rumbling can be hear upstairs, followed by the sound of a table flipping over and shouting in giant.

The second of the two soldiers launches his spear with deadly accuracy, only to have it brushed aside harmlessly. It skids to a stop at Aerandir's feat.

Aerandir notes that the spear is exceptionally well made, and that its former owner was likely very dull to have employed it in this way.

Sam dashes up to the forward of the two half-giants. He steps onto the creature's knee and hops up to it's chest, bringing his right foot across the big guys face. The half-giant gaurd staggers backwards holding his right eye in a way more literal than would be ideal.

Aerandir is "definantly not here," to quote one of my players. I am not especially worried, as I am confident we can finish the quest on time. The faster we go the more luxury time we have, though, and luxury time is the good part.

The giant who's face Sam just smashed in pulls his spear out of the ceiling and stabs at the dwarf with a clumsy, jerky motion which Sam easily avoids. The second warrior runs up to Sam and dive-tackles him, coming out on top as they roll back across the floor.

Sam takes six damage and is grappled. It is his turn (but feel free to post out of order). Sam and the giant are in the square immidiately in front of Aerandir, who is at the top-right most square. The other half-giant is two squares down and one to the left of that.

Aerandir sets off at a run, but skids to a halt at the Dwarf's plea. He turns and bring his great sword down across the creature's shoulder in one motion. His sword leaves a long, bloody gash across the giant's shoulder and leaves a large scar across the wooden floor just below Sam's Sporran (http://www.greatscotshop.com/menskilt.htm).

The other half-giant takes the oppurtunity drive his spear into Aerandir's calf. A thin line of blood runs down the elf's plate greave.

Meanwhile, Sam is coated in giant blood and is brawling with a big, angry, blood-soaked giant. The giant attempts to elbow Sam in the face, but the dwarf slams his knee into the creature's ribs.

In the interest of moving things right along:

Aerandir turns around to face his attacker. The giant stabs at the elf again, but this time he has no advantage. Aerandir slaps the clumsy spear down and steps into the giant, ramming his pommel into the big thing's colar bone. A dull snap can be heard, and the giant nearly falls over, his breathing heavy and labored.

Sam reaches the monsterous creature just as it collapses. Whether or not it is genuinely dead, it appears to lack the will to fight on any level, let alone maintain conciousness.

Aeranidr beat the hell out of the giant. Experience is forthcoming, and I need to do some math and set up those week-by-week analysies at the top of the thread. For the time being you see this hallway continues on. You are also aware that you could go back past your cells. There is also a stairway to the west.

Sam and Aerandir are led through the bowls of the ship and wind up on the deck, which has been decorated like a poorly knocked-off Coliseum. Situated on an elevated throne at the stern of the ship is a true giant. The dwarf and the Elf are shoved out into the arena

The giant wouldn't happen to be armed with anything that might give us a clue as to his attack strategy, would he?
Shaken, not Stunned

10-02-05, 08:58 PM
He appears to be absolutely unarmed. He is wearing a big fur of a loin cloth, a leather cross-strap on his torso, and pair of heavy hide boots. Oh, and a viking hat, just for good measure.

Aerandir and Sam begin to move, but before they can finish their first respective steps, the big creature seated on his thrown tosses aside a huge chicken leg and swallows a massive goblet of some liquid before dropping down into the arena. he takes a single massive stride over to one of the rocks and pulls a lever. You don't notice anything happening.

I rolled over here for intiative. Aerandir rolled an eight, plus what ever his modifier is. The giant rolled a sixteen plus [you don't know] and went first. It is now Aerandir's turn, but the order isn't important so long as we go:

In the interest of finishing, I'm taking Ellorion's character until he returns. Aerandir will also move to base the giant, flanking if he can, drawing his sword while moving and attacking when he gets next to the giant.
If you could give me a warning when HP starts to get low, that would be great.

Aerandir has taken 20 damage. I believe you have taken seven damage.

Aerandir can flank, but doing so would provoke an AoO. Do you want to anyway?
Snommelp

10-06-05, 10:27 PM
No, no flanking if he's going to provoke an AoO. But next round, Sam will tumble into a flanking position and Aerandir will heal himself with Lay on Hands.
Shaken, not Stunned

10-07-05, 06:35 PM
Aeranider leaps forward and swings his sword towards the giant's flank. The massive creature shifts backwards at the last second, but Aerandir follows up by pivoting around on his right leg and sending his sword across the giant's upper thigh.

The hill giant responds by picking up one of the big rocks near by and slamming Aerandir into the dirt. He appears to be bleeding badly, and is at least a little bit unconcious.

Aerandir is unconcious (-1). I suggest you come up with something very clever, or else you are screwed. The stats for a hill giant are in the MM. I suggest you look them up and metagame something crazy.
Snommelp

10-07-05, 06:53 PM
Uh-oh... All right, let's see... I really need Aerandir for this, I think, so Sam's going to tumble over to Aerandir's square, grab one of Aerandir's potions of CLW, and force-feed it to him. I hope this works... as soon as Aerandir's conscious, he'll Lay on Hands to heal himself as much as he can. Then back to flanking and smacking.
Shaken, not Stunned

10-08-05, 01:00 AM
You and he are nearly adjacent, so you can pull this off. The giant gets an AoO. I rolled a three, and missed. You pull a potion and send it down. He hops up like pop-eye on another green weed.

He is at four, now. It is his turn, so he will lay on hands for twenty points, leaving him almost fully juiced up.

The giant proceeds to beat the bajeezus out of both of you, dealing eight and nine damage to Aerandir and Sam, respectively.

Thought: this arena we are in, it's on the deck, right? Would the edge of the arena happen to be near the edge of the ship? If so, what's seperating the two?

Yes, Yes, and Nothing.

Ok. The giant stomps after you. He bases you and swings once, missing with a very low roll. Sam believes he fluked out of a head-bashing.
Snommelp

10-10-05, 07:18 PM
All right... I've actually got a plan, now. Sam will move right up to the edge of the ship and go full defense (+6). He'll move in such a way that the giant will also end up at the edge. Aerandir will draw and drink his potion of Bull's Strength. With the giant on the edge, Aerandir will Bull Rush him (on a charge for an additional +2), with Sam using the Aid Another option to give him yet another +2 on his Bull Rush (if Sam's still alive). If this works, the giant will go right off the edge. If not, well, I tried something besides trading blows.
Shaken, not Stunned

10-10-05, 08:32 PM
OK, here goes. All rolls can be found here (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?u=Giants%20Over%20Gladius&limit=on) starting with "To kill Sam."

Sam steps back and away and prepares for an onslaugt while Aerandir knocks back a potion of CLW which restores seven HP. The lunges towards Sam and swings a mighty fist. With a single blow, he sends the dwarf flying backwards across the deck of the ship. Aerandir knocks back a potion of Bull's Strength and rushes the giant. The massive creature pivots on his heel and smack Aerandir upside the head, but the Paladin isn't deterred. He slams into the giant's bulk full force, but unfortunately for him he hits the equal of a brick wall.

Aerandir and Sam wake up in a bar. Sam's leg and arm are both badly broken, and he has a large wooden shard jutting from his lowest left rib. Aerandir's right eye is swollen shut, and his upper lip is split up to his nose. He is unable to feel anything on his left leg below the mid-point of his shin. It is entirely likely this is a blessing from his god.

A heavily worn brown bag sits on the table in front of the two battered warriors. It's contents include a pile of gold, a potion of some sort, and a letter written in crude common. It reads, "Puny small-folk, you were brought to the giants arena and competed well. Do not be ashamed that you lost to the "Mighty Crusher of Men." Instead be proud that you were spared to fight again one day!"

Sam and Aerandir glance at each other dizzily. Their respective looks suggest uncertainty at the prospect.

10-11-05, 10:00 PM
The potion is an unguent of (time+less+ness). The total value of everything is 3200 gp, I think. The wand goes to Aerandir 'cause he can use it. It is worth 530. To be fair, you get the potion, which is worth 107. There for, the total gold for you is 1493. His is 1070. Consider this finished. EXP is listed on the front page, along with all the loot. If there are any inconsitencies, go by the first post. It is right.
Snommelp

10-11-05, 11:47 PM
Total's actually 3480, by the first post. That means that Sam's share is 1740, or 1633 and the potion. Aerandir's share is 1210 and the wand.
