Special notes:
Please choose a specific color for your posts and stick with it. Please save the color "Silver" for ooc conversations, questions and/or clarifications. I'm claiming "Royal Blue" as well for obvious reasons.

I would appreciate it if you roll your own dice. All rolls must be linked or they don't count. Rolls should be made under GroundingtheDragon. I will do all my public rolls under that, and some DM rolls under another name, which I will link when the Quest is over.

Cross-post from Living Tree guild house in case you missed it...
A taller bow-legged looking man comes in. His features are hidden by the long silk scarf draped around his head many times. As he unwraps it, you can see his dark skin pattern of ritual scars that surround his eyes and mouth. A quick glance can show he seems nervous, as if standing still for even that moment is something foreign and dangerous.

He quickly heads towards Darren.

"Greetings, I am Saaleem of the Uqua Tribe. Hopefully you have received my message about the dragon that plagues our village. We cannot stop it as it flies over raining destruction down upon our simple people, our weapons bounce off, and it laughs and takes away our camels. It has gotten worse, even now it has started to take our very people, the young and old, men and women alike. We have no other place to go, please help us oh mighty dragonslayer."

...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y138/waywreth/city.jpg

After a day's journey with Saleem you find yourselves on the outskirts of the city. Saleem tells you the tribe is led by a Sheikh and that they herd camels, sheep, and goats, while riding on highly prized horses, moving according to the seasons for grazing lands. The temperature is hot, but not overly so as night has fallen. The dust of the city whips around your feet.

The women you see wear a black garment decorated beautifully on the chest while the head and face are protected and many wear expensive jewels especially the necklaces. Men usually wear long garments, mostly white with a red headdress and a black headband.

Accepting the invitation to meet the Sheikh, you are led to a large building, and offered a meal that consists of rice covered with meat (beef or lamb) which is cooked with yogurt. Pine nuts are tastefuly added.

A few moments later, a large man wearing a great deal of jewelry enters. You can see the age lines of his face compounded by the stress that seems to be eating away at his frame. "Thank you" he says as he bows, "thank you for coming". "Please dine with us tonight, and then I shall provide a map to the ruins we think the dragon habitats, and answer any questions you may have." He sits down on a nearby cushion and grabs a handful of pine nuts.

Daeren spends much of the journey to the town in conversation with the others - doing his best to edge out Saffron in the number of words that pass by.

... you see, this Drider had me pegged in a difficult spot - but I wasn't going to come out on his terms. I made sure he used all his arrows and when he closed... WHAMO! - I threw a bear behind him and it was all over for him...

As the town came into view, Daeren quieted down - reflecting on the trials ahead. Just be patient - no one got anywhere by being too hasty... be patient young dwarf. He thought to himself an old mantra from his father.

---------------------------------

Daeren ate well at the banquet, using the time to get as much information about the dragon and his lair as possible. So how many lives has this dragon taken so far? he asked in passing. I heard about this situation from a druid in the northern wastes, when I was taking care of a white dragon up there. That dragon had been associated with a disease that plagued the people and animals up there and could only be cured with the petals of a strange flower. Has any sort of disease manifested itself here? Has there been any indication that this dragon might be working on someone's behalf and might only be a pawn rather than the queen?

At the end of the dinner, he thanked his host profusely, but in the last moment, a belch escaped his throat. He turned slightly red in embarrasment.

Morgan engages in conversation with the young brass dragon, and the dwarf, though at a slightly less rapid pace than either of them.

"A Drider you say? What a beast. I would've loved to have seen that fight."...

Morgan takes in the surrounding countryside, noticing how the trees give way to shrubs, and the air heats up significantly. It has been many years since I've spent this much time in the desert...I'd forgotten how blastedly hot it gets.

----------------------------------

Where has the dragon been hitting your people? The trade routes, your homes? The oasis? If we can lure it to an area of our choosing, we have a better chance of dispatching it for you." he trails off before he overwhelms them with questions.

Morgan sips brandy at the end of dinner, and compliments his hosts on their wonderful food, "It has been many years since I have eaten such food. Thank you for your hospitality."

"The dragon has taken 4 lives so far and many cattle. I don't know if the dragon works for anyone, I don't think so though. It seems to do what it wants. The dragon usually attacks the herders or those away from the city. There doesn't seem to be a pattern. We have been able to track it back to where we think its lair is though... of course that would be where it keeps its treasure, so attacking at night might be your best bet?"

"Let us know when you're ready to leave, and if you need any additional provisions. The desert is dangerous during the day, and the predators come out at night."

Everyone can see that Saffron enjoys traveling immensely, primarily because she stops babeling at top speed. She spends a most of the time traveling hundreds of feet in the air, circling and keeping an eye on the surrounding land.

At the dinnertable, she revels in the strange looks she gets from the tribal humans. "What, you didn't know dragons fought other dragons? I figured living in the desert you might have bumped into a brass or two, but then maybe the Blue drove all my kin off....

Yeah, Blue's don't take orders from anybody. They make alliances every now and then, but they can't stand being told what to do. Say, has Blue actually said that he claimed this area? Like, did she fly in and say 'This is my land, that there is my rock,' or anything like that?" If the answer is yes, then Saffron will break out the gloves of object reading and start examining things, even it it's just claimed dirt.

"You tracked it back to it's lair huh? You can track underground? Cause I know that my momma's 'lair' you had to fly up to this rocky area, then dig down through some caverns to make sure no one could follow your trail, then do some more flying. You think you could show me trail? I'd love to get a look at Blue's footprint.

Say, maybe some travel food would be good, like rations or something. I can hunt just fine, but we might get a little preoccupied."

The village elder looks a bit sheepish when Saffron goes on... of course this is after getting over his initial shock. "I'm sorry small one, I didn't know you spoke. I thought you were the familiar of the elf."

"We do not know if the dragon claims this land or what - it has not spoken to us." As per tracking to its lair... well...we more know of which hill it flies to at night than the actual exact location. It is passed an ancient burial ground of a people who were here long before we arrived. We think the dragon sleeps deep within their tomb."

"We can provide you with food and water for the journey. When do you want to make your way towards the cavern? The journey should take no more than one setting of the moon."
Myrridin

01-12-06, 09:37 AM
"I am not well versed in travelling in the desert, whether it is by day or night. Daeren, Saffron, does either of you have a preference?" Morgan says while shooting a wry look towards the elder who thought Saffron was his familiar.

"I am not so mighty in the arcane arts as to have a dragon for a familiar, though I thank you for the compliment. Saffron is a friend and companion."

Morgan stretches for a moment, and then looks to his companions again, "I can protect myself from the worst of the desert heat, should we decide to travel during the day."
TelinArtho

01-12-06, 10:58 AM
Daylight would definitely be preferable - allows us to see when things are coming to us from above. As long as the dragon doesn't sneak up on us like Saffron here - we should be in good position.

Saffron has no problems with the desert heat - and I've got my own protections. If you give us a little food and some water - I would think we'd have all we need - assuming you point us in the right direction.

"Thank you sir. Perhaps you can stay here for an hour or two until it gets light and then take your leave. We wish you luck and many blessings"

You are given all the food and water you want. Please note changes in encumberance.
You also receive a rough map which will lead you to the area near the dragon's lair.
It has been 4 hours since the quest started, as you may know you're not allowed to rest during it - so be prepared. If you have any further things to do let me know otherwise you're off into the desert.
TelinArtho

01-12-06, 01:12 PM
Hmmm - my encumbrance values are off. With a 17 str, they should be 0-86/87-173/174-260.

I'll carry 5 waterskins (20lbs) and 4 days of rations (4lbs) in a sack (if they can provide one anyway) - which brings me up to 84.3lbs. In combat, I'll drop the sack if I need to (which is likely...).

With only an hour or two to wait before daylight, Daeren is a little more conscious of needing to get going.

Perhaps leaving in these pre-dawn hours would be wise...

Although the sun beats down upon their unprotected bodies, the magic effects on Darren and Morgan easily able to prevent any ill effects. After two hours of travel over endless sand dunes with Saffron chattering the whole way, the party abruptly comes to a halt.

In the distance (over 200') stands a 4-legged beast - a coalblack mastiff easily the size of a large horse, with the glint of metal shining off its chest and back. It stands glaring at you with some sort of malevolent intelligence.

Of course while Morgan and Saffron see this, Darren is busy once again adjusting his saddlebags to account for the additional weight.

He grabs an arrow out of the quiver on his back, and sets it to the string, ready to raise and shoot at the creature if it makes a hostile move.

I'm surprised - so this will be my 1st round action - assuming it has shown intention to do us harm...

Daeren doesn't waste any time and pulls out a ball of fur from his bag and throws it on the ground 10ft in front of him. A brown bear (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=334171) grows instantly and Daeren orders it to attack.

Sorry for the delay; I'm off for the weekend now, so posting should be more frequent.

Supprise round: start hover at 15 ft - announce enemy

Round 1: draw wand of enfeeblement and use BreathWeapon: sleep [DC16 will save or 1d6+1 round sleep] (on multiple opponents if any of them get within 15 ft. of each other; will ready an action to use BW if that would be more appropriate)

Round 2: fire wand of enfeeble (max range 30 ft.) at the mastif (hits touch ac 21; 7 str drain; 20 round durration) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=334637) and draw wand of invis (one wand in each hand)

"OI! Surrounded! Where the devil did those two come from?" Saffron flutters up above everyone and twists her neck back and forth, trying to survey the entire battle at once. She reaches into her back and draws two wands, weilding them like miniature dual rapiers. She spins around, waiting for any enemy to get close enough to snap at.

Just out of curiosity - did Bessie not get an action after appearing?

Bessie roars in aggression and lays into the cat before it - swiping her huge claws and biting fiercely.

Bessie full attacks one of the lions (Cat2) (1d20+11=29, 1d8+8=9, 1d20+11=16, 1d8+8=10, 1d20+6=9, 2d6+4=12) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=334746)

Daeren draws his waraxe and prays to Grantis for might to strike down the creature before him. (full expertise for -5 to hit, +5 to AC)

Daeren attacks Cat2 (hopefully in a grapple...) (1d20+11-5=11, 1d10+4=13) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=334759)

She appears during round 1 (aka now) since you failed the spot check to notice the Mastiff and didn't act during the surprise round, so her first round of being active is what you rolled in your above post, unless I'm screwing the order up?

Bessies claws tear into Lion, both hitting, but it manages to dodge her bite attempt. She tries to bring it into a hug, but it resists both times.

Opposed grapples:
1d20+17-> [11,17] = (28)
1d20+17-> [14,17] = (31) tie goes to highest modifier, which is the lion

Daeren swings his waraxe from a defensive position, but misses.

Morgan's round 2 actions:

He can't leave Daeren to take all of them on at once, and will descend back to ground level, and shoot once at the cat that is hopefully grappled. Regardless, he'll shoot at the one that has been injured.

This is correct, she goes at the end of the round though having the worst init, so I'm waiting for the post. The issue now is that the lions are in melee, and the sleep breath weapon is a cone - so I'm unsure of her action considering that.

Instead of using breathweapon, use the wand strike first, on the cat that Daeren is fighting. Then possibly use the breathweapon next round, depending on locations. If Daeren gets knocked unconcious, or if he ends more than 15 ft. from the cats, then use the sleep.

Saffrons breath recharges in 2 rounds (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335870) and the Lion sleeps for 4 rounds (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=335871). This reminds me; do you consider the breathweapon recharge time to start at the time the breath is used, or at the begining of the next turn. There is no offical rule, so I leave it to you. Example; if I roll a 1 on recharge time, can I use the breathweapon on the next round, or do I have to spend that next round recharging as a free action?

"Yeah that's what you get fuzball! You best have some good dreams before I eat you for dinner... Ak! Morgan get the heck out of there."

Will wait to post my action, since I would have to repost it later anyway :)

The lion sleeps tonight... oooh oooh oooh...
Sorry, Anyway to answer you - the number you roll is the number of rounds you can't use it, so if you roll a 1 you couldn't use for one round, then could use the following.
Example if you roll a 1: Breathe, can't use, breathe.

What are you doing man! Mirror Image already!

Saffron - get that thing weakened. Bertha can take care of that lion for now - I'll try to get the blasted dog-thing entangled with a tanglefoot bag.

Feel free to disagree with my take on what we need to do - I'm open to suggestions... but we need to make it a few rounds...

Well then, if no-one gets knocked unconcious, then ray of enfeeble hits touch AC 14 for 5 str drain. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=336167) If someone is downed, then I'll 5 ft over, draw my cure wand and heal them. And if that cannot happen... Umm... I'll do whatever Daeren tells me to do (this is in case I'm not online. I hate holding up a fight.)

Morgan 5' steps away from the mastiff, and casts Mirror Image, and suddenly six (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=336986) copies of him appear all in the same area. His armor gives him momentary pause, but he pushes through the resistance (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=337187).

"It breathes fire too, careful of the mastiff's breath! Morgan shouts, his cauterized arm attesting to the fact.

The first time the mastiff attacked me, it readied an action I'm assuming? Since I wouldn't have started to descend until my action, which is after the mastiff's. If it readied, that's fine, I wouldn't have changed my action, just trying to figure things out.
TelinArtho

This assumes the lion doesn't kill Bertha (not likely - but you never know...)

Daeren steps forward and to the side to be able to hit the mastiff easier, and throws a globulous bag at the creature. The bag erupts into a mass of goo - around the creature. Daeren pauses for a moment to see whether the goo has glued the creature to the ground Reflex DC15

Throw tanglefoot bag - 15ft away (1d20+9-2=26) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=336993)

Bertha claws and bites furiously at the lion, tearing large sections of the lion's skin away. Bertha roars triumphantly as the lion is virtually torn apart!

Bertha attacks for damage in grapple (1d20+11-4=24, 1d8+8=16, 1d20+11-4=26, 1d8+8=15, 1d20+6-4=12, 2d6+4=11) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=336994)

If by some miracle the lion kills Bertha, I'll be dragging yet another animal from my bag and putting it between Morgan and the mastiff.

Yes Myrridin, it readied and has reach as well.

The Lion flails in Bertha's grasp but upon her turn its back is snapped with a yowl.

Daeren tosses his tanglefoot bag at the Mastiff and is shocked to see it actually get glued to the ground (for 6 rounds)!

Saffron proceeds to drain the Mastiff for 5 points of Str.

It attempts to burst free, and rips off the ground.
1d20+6-> [19,6] = (25)

Daeren, then Bertha, then Saffron now up.
TelinArtho

01-16-06, 12:13 PM
Just to clarify - when Morgan steps away - he should be 15ft away. Then I tanglefoot the sucker and glue it to the ground.

It is too far away to breathe on Morgan - and breaking out of the glue sticking it to the ground is a standard action. Also - since you didn't note it on the summary below, the mastiff is still entangled (just not glued) for 6 rounds and Morgan's mirror images are still up.

If Morgan is in fact still up, the actions below will happen. If not, Bertha will charge (so +2 to the attack roll) since Morgan wouldn't be in the way.

Daeren orders Bertha to attack the mastiff, then he casts a spell from memory on himself - transforming into the form of a troglodyte. He steps to the side to hopefully gain a good flank on the creature when Bertha steps up.

Arcane Spell Failure for Alter Self (1-10 fails) (1d100=91) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=337171)

Bertha moves up to the great beast (provoking an AoO) and swings a great claw, but it merely deflects off of the protections of the creature.

Claw attack, damage and grapple check if it hits (1d20+11=15) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=337162)

Assuming Morgan is still up - this is approximately what the map should be (no clue where Saffron is - but she can stay out of range with ease anyway). H is the mastiff, B is Bertha, M is Morgan, D is Daeren, L is the sleeping lion. 1 indicates the location to start the round, 2 indicates the location after their action.

You are correct about the entangle, thank you. I thought with a 10' reach and a 10' cone it could reach Morgan, but as it does take a standard action to break out, it cannot do all that in one round, so Morgan is still up.

The Mastiff rips into Bertha, searing her flesh.

... Mirror Images are not dissipated from area effects:

Figments seem to react normally to area spells (such as looking like they’re burned or dead after being hit by a fireball).

Also - you missed one of Morgan's actions in here:

Morgan casts Mirror Image, Daeren throws tanglefoot bag, Bertha kills lion, Saffron hits it with ray of enfeeblement.

Next round: Mastiff breaks free. Morgan ????, Daeren casts Alter Self, Bertha moves up to Mastiff and attacks, Saffron hits it with another ray.

Next round: Mastiff breathes...

Lastly - I don't believe Ray of Enfeeblement stacks with itself:

Stacking Effects: Spells that provide bonuses or penalties on attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and other attributes usually do not stack with themselves. More generally, two bonuses of the same type don’t stack even if they come from different spells (or from effects other than spells; see Bonus Types, above).
Different Bonus Names: The bonuses or penalties from two different spells stack if the modifiers are of different types. A bonus that isn’t named stacks with any bonus.
Same Effect More than Once in Different Strengths: In cases when two or more identical spells are operating in the same area or on the same target, but at different strengths, only the best one applies.

I've always had mirror images being destroyed if they take damage. I recall an arena fight where they were struck by splash damage and dissapated (of course that could be wrong as well).

And eww it doesn't stack. Well I guess I can skip that necromancer who was going to buy a wand of enfeeblement.

Ah and yes I did miss his action. Sorry keeping track with 3 players is a bit difficult since we don't have time to wait for each person to post. Sorry for the mixups folks - trying to keep this in the deadline alloted is a proving harder than I thought.

Round2:
Saffron can use wand to heal Morgan instead of Enfeebling the Mastiff again. Morgan or Saffron can roll (whomever sees this first).

Round3:
Mastiff bursts free (-5 str, Entangled)
Morgan's Turn?

...Bertha's Turn?
Saffron's Turn?

TelinArtho

01-16-06, 03:35 PM
No problem - I think you're doing fine. And I believe Round 2 is all set. I'll go through and do a quick summary to be sure:

Surprise - Enemies close, Saffron flies and hovers, Morgan shoots an arrow

Round 1 - Mastiff closes and readies and attacks, Morgan casts Fly, Cats close, Daeren draws Bessie (Bear), Saffron uses wand of enfeeblement

Round 2 - Mastiff attacks, Morgan shoots arrows, Cats Attack (Daeren and Bessie - Bessie dead), Daeren draws Bertha (bear), Bertha grapples lion. Saffron uses breath weapon (lion falls asleep - ends just before Saffron's action in round 6)

Round 3 - Mastiff attacks Morgan, Morgan casts Mirror Image, Lion fails to damage Bertha, Daeren throws tanglefoot bag (Mastiff entangled until round 9 before Daeren's action), Bertha destroys lion. Saffron uses wand of enfeeblement on Mastiff.

Round 4 - Mastiff breaks entanglement, Morgan heals with a potion of CMW, Daeren casts Alter Self, Bertha attacks Mastiff. Saffron ????

Round 5 - Mastiff breathes, Morgan ????

Its a little jumbled in round 1 and 2 - but I think that's the correct order of things.

As to the Mirror Images - it happened in a fight this week and it was concluded that the pitlord handled it incorrectly. Area effects do not dissipate the images whether the effect is from a spell or otherwise.

Morgan moves backwards 5' and while moving draws a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds. He stops and guzzles the potion, curing some of the wounds that he's taken. (CMW: 8+2+3=13 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=337461)) he sighs in relief as most of the burns scab over and flake off.

Ahh, I thought that I could draw a potion while moving. And completely forgot about the AoO which I don't want to incur. I'll 5' step, and then drink the potion, as planned.
TelinArtho

01-16-06, 04:29 PM
You can't draw a potion during a move action (not a weapon or weapon-like object) - also moving back 15ft will draw an AoO - suggest just making it a 5ft step.

Also - you might want to post your next action as well - since most of the other actions have been posted to you as well.

After fighting the hound so far, you can surmise the following:
As you may have guessed the hound isn't all that bright, so it'll just attack the closest target. After eating whatever Daeren summons it'll either go after Morgan or Daeren, depending on who has hurt it more, or Saffron should she be foolish enough to come within reach. And it's immune to fire.

Sorry to be away from keys most of the day - been fighting a stomach bug all day and its causing me some serious hell!

Future plans: Daeren will draw his longspear and put away his Waraxe, then, assuming the warhorse is down, will draw another animal from his bag and put it between the mastiff and Morgan. Then Daeren will proceed to melee with it, using full expertise - 5ft step in and make 2 attacks (+5/+0 at 1d8+4 with expertise in). AC with expertise is (18+6+4+5=33).

Round 11 -

The Mastiff attempts to withdraw, but Morgan quickly puts an end to that idea with a pair of arrows that finally fell the beast from behind. A quick search of the corpses finds only the magical chainmail on the Nessian Warhound.

Treasure: 3,375gp= .75*4,500gp +2 chain shirt barding (sized large)
XP: 1,600 XP each
Items used: Daeren - Bag of tricks x4, Tanglefoot bag, Alter Self from memory, Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds, Scroll of Shield (CL2)
Morgan - Arrows - 9, Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds, Fly from memory, Mirror Image from memory
saffron - 2 Charges of Ray of Enfeeblement Wand, 1 Charge of Cure Light Wounds Wand, 3 Charges of Magic Missle Wand (CL3)

Morgan - feel free to roll the 50/50 for your arrows that missed.

Please heal up, buff-up and we'll move on!

Morgan searchs the ground, trying to see if any of his missed shots are recoverable. He only finds one (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=339074) that is still useable.

"Well, I suppose one is better than none, yeah? How are you holding up Daeren? Thanks for the cover from the animals."

Morgan will use his Pearl of Power (2nd) to recall the Mirror Image spell back in to memory.

Morgan pauses for a moment, and then pulls and drinks three potions from his bag, healing more of his wounds. (CLW potions: 7+1=8; 5+1=6 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=339075); CLW potion #3: 8+1=9 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=339078))

I originally was only going to drink two, and then decided to add a third after my HP were still a little low. I'm good to go now.

"Does anyone see a need for the chain barding? I don't have a mount to use it with."

"Excellent use of your wands Saffron, and your breath weapon certainly was handy to have." With a nod to Saffron he readjusts his pack.

CLW potions for Daeren (1d8+1=5, 1d8+1=6) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=339120) (6 CLW potions in total)

Daeren 53/65, Alter Self (ends in 40 minutes), Shield (ends in less than 2 minutes)

Daeren will also keep Fergui (newest bear) for the full 10 minute duration.

Daeren - Bag of tricks x4, Tanglefoot bag, Alter Self from memory, Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds, Scroll of Shield (CL2), 6 Potions of Cure Light Wounds
Morgan - Arrows - 8, Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds, Fly from memory, Mirror Image from memory, 3 Cure Light Wounds potions, Pearl of Power (CL2)
Saffron - 2 Charges of Ray of Enfeeblement Wand, 1 Charge of Cure Light Wounds Wand, 3 Charges of Magic Missle Wand (CL3)

After healing up, the party journeys on. Shortly thereafter Fergui disappears. After two hours of walking, the beating sun and walking though sand take its toll, and the party finds a shady dune to sit behind for a quick rest stop.

If you have Knowledge: Nature, and/or Survival please make a check. Everyone please make a listen check.

Although Morgan is too busy enjoying his suntanning, both Daeren and Saffron realize a few important things.

1. This hill/valley looks more like a burrow than a valley should.
2. It'd be a really large burrow.
3. That clicking sound reminds you of the sound a giant scorpion would make, cept alot louder.
4. Scorpions don't like it when you sit on their burrows.
5. Scorpions grab and sting. Their venom is more deadly the larger they are.

Daeren and Saffron can act during the surprise round. Morgan cannot. Everyone please roll iniative.

The bear that forms is a little disoriented, but growls fiercly at the scorpion - fully twice its size. Daeren takes a precautious step back - hoping that the bear will at least delay the beast for a second or two.

01-19-06, 09:18 PM
The only things restricted for burrowing that I see is running and charging:
Burrow: A creature with a burrow speed can tunnel through dirt, but not through rock unless the descriptive text says otherwise. Creatures cannot charge or run while burrowing. Most burrowing creatures do not leave behind tunnels other creatures can use (either because the material they tunnel through fills in behind them or because they do not actually dislocate any material when burrowing); see the individual creature descriptions for details.

From the looks of things - looks like another animal coming...

Daeren reaches once again into his bag - hoping to recover the life of the dragon accompanying them. Pulling out the ball of full, he tosses it in front of him and it grows (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340566) into a heavy warhorse.

Why never the rhino when I need him? Hold on Saffron - we'll get you out of this mess yet!

"BAHAMUT'S BEARD THAT THING'S HUGE!! Saffron is so freaked by the immense monster that she fires a wild shot from her wand into the air as she dives back under the sand.

Yup, except for run/charge, burrowing works like any other kind of movement.

Saffron BW recharge: 2 rounds (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340579). So I can use it again at the begining of round 4.

Saffron shoots the wand and by a miracle of science, Misses (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340580)

Possible plan (want feedback from questlord first)
Next round, double move: burrow away from the beast 30 ft., then fly straight up 75 ft.

Next round move straight up another 75 ft and get a feathertoken: anchor out of my pack.

Next round move up another 50 ft and drop the anchor on the scorpion from 200 ft for 20d6 damage. (I can move up another 20 ft if you want to say the anchor weighs less, but no more than that)

FALLING OBJECTS

Just as characters take damage when they fall more than 10 feet, so too do they take damage when they are hit by falling objects.

Objects that fall upon characters deal damage based on their weight and the distance they have fallen.

For each 200 pounds of an object’s weight, the object deals 1d6 points of damage, provided it falls at least 10 feet. Distance also comes into play, adding an additional 1d6 points of damage for every 10-foot increment it falls beyond the first (to a maximum of 20d6 points of damage).

Objects smaller than 200 pounds also deal damage when dropped, but they must fall farther to deal the same damage. Use Table: Damage from Falling Objects to see how far an object of a given weight must drop to deal 1d6 points of damage.

Table: DAMAGE FROM FALLING OBJECTS
Object Weight Falling Distance
200–101 lb. 20 ft.
100–51 lb. 30 ft.
50–31 lb. 40 ft.
30–11 lb. 50 ft.
10–6 lb. 60 ft.
5–1 lb. 70 ft.

For each additional increment an object falls, it deals an additional 1d6 points of damage. Objects weighing less than 1 pound do not deal damage to those they land upon, no matter how far they have fallen.
Next round, throw another one. Unless everyone begs me to fly down and breathe on it.

I know of no rules for this. To me, I think it would be a ranged touch attack with an improvised weapon. If you decide that it should be a regular ranged attack (i.e. include nat. armor) then ditch this plan; I only have a +6 to hit vs. it's AC of 24. But against the touch ac of 6, go for it.

Backup plans
If the plan gets scraped, burrow away and hit it with the wand of enfeeble next round. Then burrow back to a good spot and breathe sleep on it after that.

If anyone needs to make a get away I can tap them from just below the surface with my invis wand; nothing wrong with 50% miss chance and no AOO.

Re: Feather token. Sorry, I usually only allow those to work in water. The same trick which you're trying my players in RL campaign have tried as well. They also tried to use the tree token under monsters. I'll allow it, but it's going to need to penetrate the full AC, since hitting something and bouncing off their armor doesn't do much... think of hitting a tank with a missle, if it doesn't penetrate, there is not real effect.

Of course after what happened last round, you might want to rethink what you're up to anyway.

Round 2:
A black ray shoots from Morgan's hand and hits the creature square in the chest, causing it to weaken.
Saffron fires her wand, misses somehow, and withdraws into the sand a full move away.
Daeren summons a heavy warhorse and lets out a small sigh.
Fodder the warhorse attacks with little effect.
The scorpion wants horsemeat, and the scorpion gets what it wants! It then scuttles forward a bit.

"I can weaken the beast, that might give it a few moments pause." Morgan says right before he chants a spell to reduce the creature's strength.

Again, his armor fights against the magic he pulls from his body, but it doesn't impede (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340725) his spell casting.

A black ray shoots from Morgan's hand and (Touch attack: 6+10=16 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340726)) hits the creature square in the chest, causing it to weaken. (Strength loss: 4+3=7 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340727))

"Hopefully that'll slow the creature down a bit."

Round 3 Action:

Morgan again calls on his magic, and is pleased to find that he can still overcome (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340728) the resistance of his armor.

Again he points his hand at the huge scorpion, and a red beam streaks from his palm. Somehow he manages to miss the huge creature, turning the sand at it's feet into glass. (Attack: 1+10=11 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340729))

I've used Shrink item to good effect to pull this off as well. Nothing like dropping a bonfire on someone's head. It's a valid prebuff too since it's 1/day per level.

Edit: I like using Wagons. Wagon: 35 gp, 400 lb.

Shrink Item
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: One touched object of up to 2 cu. ft./level
Duration: One day/level; see text
Saving Throw: Will negates (object)
Spell Resistance: Yes (object)
You are able to shrink one nonmagical item (if it is within the size limit) to 1/16 of its normal size in each dimension (to about 1/4,000 the original volume and mass). This change effectively reduces the object’s size by four categories. Optionally, you can also change its now shrunken composition to a clothlike one. Objects changed by a shrink item spell can be returned to normal composition and size merely by tossing them onto any solid surface or by a word of command from the original caster. Even a burning fire and its fuel can be shrunk by this spell. Restoring the shrunken object to its normal size and composition ends the spell.

Shrink item can be made permanent with a permanency spell, in which case the affected object can be shrunk and expanded an indefinite number of times, but only by the original caster.

Get him Simba! Rip his throat out!

The lion pounces on the scorpion, clawing and biting, but the attacks seem to have little effect.

Simba the Lion attacks (1d20+7=12, 1d20+7=23, 1d20+2=8) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340787)

Where is that infernal rhino? Morgan - can you take a hit? I need a little time to cast my next spell.

Daeren then backs up 30ft.

Next round, cast Enlarge Person from memory.

Round 4:

Morgan's Action - Morgan takes a 5' step back and draws his bow... however he is still within the reach of the massive beast, and it takes a swipe at him but only destroys an image.
"1" is real Morgan > 1d6-> [2] = (2), 1d20+18-> [6,18] = (24)

Saffron's Action - Saffron realizes the reach of the beast and notices she can't get within range without getting annilated. She choses to go invisible using her wand, and will try to breathe on the beast next round (Let me know if you'd like to change this...)

Daeren's Action - He attempts to cast enlarge person on himself from memory.

Scorpion's Action - The scorpion launches a flurry of attacks at Morgan!
The first strikes the real Morgan and pulls him into a grapple causing additional constriction damage. The second claw strikes an image causing it to disappear, the tail comes down as well destroying yet another image.
Claw Attack: 1d20+18-> [18,18] = (36), Target: 1d5-> [1] = (1) Uh oh, damage: 2d6+7-> [4,3,7] = (14), Grapple check: 1d20+37-> [17,37] = (54), Constriction Damage: 2d6+7-> [1,5,7] = (13)
2nd Claw: 1d20+18, 1d5-> ([16, 18], [5])
Tail: 1d20+13-> [7,13] = (20), 1d4-> [2] = (2)

Here's my plan - tell me if you like it between getting eaten...

I'll cast Enlarge on myself and draw my spear. You and Saffron get out of its reach and I'll impale it when it gets too close. Then I can move in and hopefully take it out before it eats me up.

Sound good? Saffron - how's that great breath of yours coming along?

So my goal is to let it charge me, I'll rage beforehand and take the AoO and a ready action to receive the charge. +12 to hit on both attacks, 2d6+9 on the AoO and 4d6+18 on the ready. Since it'll hit me on anything more than a 1, I'm not too concerned about my AC being low - just trying to out damage it...

"Sounds like a good plan Daeren, I'll do my best to pepper it with arrows, and let's see if we can't take it down fast. I can try casting Blur on you, if you think it'll help."
TelinArtho

01-20-06, 11:59 AM

I would recommend rethinking that plan now that Morgan is grappled and injured... there's a chance Saffron can put it to sleep on her action, but other than that it could get messy.

Round 5:

Morgan's Action - Morgan delay's hoping it falls asleep.

Saffron's Action - Saffron will get within 15' and attempt to put it to sleep. She figures she can do this without getting Morgan as well since the insect is so large. The gods of luck smile upon her and it collapses to the ground asleep.
Will Save: 1d20+6-> [4,6] = (10) FAIL!

Daeren's Action - CDG

Scorpion's Action -

Not that it makes a difference on the above - but Morgan took a 5ft step back when he started 15ft away - so I don't think it can reach him with that AoO.

Also, when attacking in the grapple, it should be getting a -4 to all of its attacks.

Can I adjust my action in round 3 slightly that when I moved away I drew my longspear? The only reason I didn't was because I was considering casting enlarge from a scroll until I remembered the extra move action for that...

It took a 5' step after eating one of your animals to get within 15'. Good call on the -4 though, I will include in future.

I will hold my action until Saffron's has occurred. If it's not asleep, well, there's nothing I can do against it, as I actually can't get out of it's grapple.

In that case - (this assumes the breath weapon of Saffron's fails)

Daeren rages with fury and charges in to save Morgan. The spear juts into the scorpion, forcing it to squeal in pain.

Daeren rages and charges (1d20+10+2=25, 2d6+9=17) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340886)

If Saffron's breath works, then Daeren will not rage, will not charge, but merely move up and CDG.

CDG attempt (2d6+9=17, 2d6+9=18, 2d6+9=16) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340896) +3 (for the damage I forgot) = 54 damage (It can survive with a natural 20 on a fortitude save...)

Daeren strides up to the sleeping creature, the Spear of Fangs glistening with its own ichor and plunges it deeply. He twists it as it attempts to shake off the dragon's sleep - but in the end - it twitches into death.

You all right there Morgan, Saffron? You guys were getting me a little scared engaging that thing. Did you not see the SIZE of it? Daeren laughs heartily to break up the tense mood of the situation.
Myrridin

01-20-06, 01:20 PM
Morgan moves backwards from the scorpion, getting about 25' feet away from it, his bow in his hand, and blood running from his body where the scorpion had him in his claws.

"Yeah...I'd say I had a pretty good look at the size of that thing." as he winces in pain, "I had no idea they got that big. I wonder if the druids back in Gladius know about this? It's got to be a pretty sizeable infestation at this point."

Daeren imbibes a couple more potions in preparation for the trials ahead.

You know - I'm not really ready for this. I was hoping to get a few more things before we left... but I just kept getting delayed.

Anyway - let's get going. That dragon ain't getting any weaker.

CLW potions on Daeren (1d8+1=7, 1d8+1=6) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340907)

2 Potions of CLW to bring me to full hp.

Also, if we get to a point where we can see the dragon's lair (even if it appears to be as much as 30 minutes away) - Daeren is going to stop and buff himself with the scroll of Resist Energy (CL11) (lasts 110 minutes) and the scroll of Stoneskin (CL7) (lasts 70 minutes). If they get as close as 10 minutes away (or so), Daeren will draw and cast a scroll of Alter Self (Trog) (40 minutes) and will hold a scroll of Enlarge Person (CL2).

I suggest that if either of you have any significant buffs - prepare as well as you can...

I'll roll the CL checks on the scrolls as they are called for - I don't want to roll them ahead of time and find out that the dragon ambushes us...
Myrridin

01-20-06, 01:39 PM
Morgan glances again in Daeren's direction, "Excellent job Daeren. That Bag of Tricks has been a life saver." he says with a weary smile.

"Saffron, where are you? Your breath weapon saved my life there. How hurt are you?"

As he's talking he pulls three Cure Light Wounds potions out, and drinks them all. (CLW Potions: 2+1=3; 2+1=3; 8+1=9 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340913)) He stretches a bit, and realizes that his wounds are nearly healed enough, so he drinks his last two Cure Light Wounds potions. (CLW Potions: 8+1=9; 7+1=8 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=340917))

"That's better. Now, how should we go about finding this dragon? I don't particularly want to fight it in it's lair...that's usually a bad idea."
TelinArtho

01-20-06, 01:44 PM
Ironically enough - I want to be out in the open. But I figure in order to get it there - we'll need to find its lair. Plus - it might have something of use if its not home. Daeren smiles knowingly...

I can't tell you how nervous I am about activating those two scrolls I have for this. 1d20+4 vs DC12 and DC8 - but if I fail either one and the subsequent Wis check - we might as well call off the whole fight...
Myrridin

01-20-06, 01:44 PM

TelinArtho

01-20-06, 01:51 PM
Scary when the players say that they want the dragon to be out in the open and flying isn't it...

Yes - we'd rather fight it outside of the lair - but that is up to you I guess. For now - we're heading towards the lair though.

And yes, I don't want to even think about failing the wisdom checks...

Just let me know when you are ready for me to roll (or if you are going to kill us all and not let us buff up before the fight...)
Myrridin

01-20-06, 01:53 PM
"I think I'd prefer to be in the open too, as getting trapped in the lair sounds like a quick way to die. I have a couple ideas that may slow it down a little."

Morgan will walk with the scroll of Ray of Exhaustion in his hand, after he's done casting the other two spells. If I get interrupted casting my previous two spells, immediately draw and cast the Ray of Exhaustion.

First off - Saffron needs to make a fortitude save the resist the secondary effects of the poison, and she probably wants to heal with her wand, so I'm going to hold off anything until those are done.

The best guess of those of you in the party is that you're about 4 to 5 hours away from the dragons burrow. From what the people of the town told you, and from what you've learned about dragons, blue dragons are out during the day, enjoying the hot weather.

I will roll % chance once every ~30 minutes of game time that you encounter the dragon. The % chance increases as you get closer to the burrow.
If you decide to change your minds, and go at night, the odds are the dragon will be in its lair.

Not that it makes a difference, but breath weapons target creatures, thus they break invisibility.

Saffron nibbles down some antitoxin immediately after the fight, and is unaffected by the lingering poison (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=341181).

Then she drinks a potion of lesser restoration and gets 3 con back (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=341182).

Then she spends 4 charges from her wand to get 26 HP back. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=341183) Rolled 2 too many; I'll keep the rolls for the next time I use it.

Then she tries to hand Daeren a potion of remove fear. "I always keep one on hand for talking to two leggers. Real bummer when they just run off. Oh you've got one? Morgan? OK, I'll keep it, but you take this one instead. Makes you super strong.

Now are you guys sure about fighting Blue out in the open? What makes you think she will even land? Or come above the surface? If we are gonna fight her out in the open, lets find some rocky area where she's not going to pop up out of the ground, drag you under the sand to suffocate.

Saffron's buffs for fighting Blue

Use survival/know:geography to find a good fight spot; fly around at elevation of 100ft. trying to spot/draw out Blue
Give potion of bulls strength to Daeren
Tap morgan with wand of invisibility
drink potion mage armor
drink potion of resist electricity (30)
tap tatoo of biofeedback
tap tatoo of mindlink (target daeren and morgan as well)

Well, if it stays at far range - Morgan should be able to hit it better than it can hit us. For that matter, I've got a small book's worth of Acid Arrow scrolls which have a fairly decent distance - and I don't have to worry too much about it getting too far away.

Inside a lair we'd have to deal with it knowing its territory better than we can see it.

If it does come down to meet us in person - it will have to deal with my spear - among other things.

Thanks for the potion - it should come in handy - though I'll have to see if I get the time to drink it.

Honestly - I'm less worried about it grappling one of us and dragging us under than I am of it taking advantage of its burrowing ability in a complex cavern and separating us when we don't want to be.

I believe that the raise in con should give Saffron back 12 hp.

I was considering not saying anything about the burrowing just in case you hadn't thought of it.... too late now, huh? :)

About encounter distance: DMG says that spot checks to determine range of a desert encounter start at 6d6x20 ft. Saffron has quadruple the spot range of a human. Am I guessing correctly that I could spot the Blue at between 480 ft (min) to 2880 ft.(max range)?

"Well, if we're going to get her out in the desert, I think we should find a better spot than this scorpion corpse to launch the attack from.

@TelinArtho - Yeah there's two dragons... they're both blues, roughly the same size. They do not look like they're the same dragon though.

@Saffron - make a will save please (not for dragonfear, for something else). Also, what's the duration on biofeedback?

I'll wait for Telin to post Morgan's round 3 action, and then update with a round 4. Just note I'm hurrying a bit since we lose two days since the boards are down Tues. and Wed.
TelinArtho

01-23-06, 03:57 PM
I'm really not that sure what to do - it is a toss up between using Haste or Blur.

I think Blur is the better option though.

Then in round 4, Morgan and Daeren will both draw and drink their potions after they have failed their saves vs fear.

Biofeedback 1 minute, DR 2/-

Will save 16 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=343694)

Sorry to be a bummer, but I have to go to work in a couple minutes.
General tactics: ray of enfeeblement. If they get on the ground use elemental gem to summon large fire elemental (11 rounds, have it full attack, grapple if it tries to fly). If nothing better to do make one of the party members invisible. Avoid melee if at all possible (since Blue basicly auto-hits me). If Daeren or Morgan give me orders, then follow them.

I probably should have mentioned this already, but never should the dragon be able to set up to hit all three of us with its breath weapon in one stroke. It probably couldn't happen anyway with Saffron flying.

Also though - unless the dragon lands - I very much doubt it would be able to get both Morgan and I in the same shot (which is very good...).

I took that as a given, it's a line so it's relatively easy to avoid anyway.

Round 4:

Morgan will draw and drink his potion of remove fear.

Daeren will draw and drink his potion of remove fear.

The sky darkens for a moment as you can all see the static charge build up around as the dragon will take a 5' step close and unleash a bolt of lightning at Daeren.
Reflex DC20 for half - 10d8-> [8,8,2,7,1,5,5,2,6,8] = (52)

The 2nd dragon disappears in a puff of smoke after being hit with a magic missile.

Saffron fires a magic missle at each dragon. She notices the first missle never hits the original dragon, but the second missle fails to hit the dragon.
Caster level check - 1d20+3-> [17,3] = (20) - and before you ask, yes I know that would have passed the dragon's spell resistance.

Morgan 51/52, Resist Energy (long), blur (29 rounds), shaken
Daeren 65/65, Resist Electricity 30 (long), shaken
Blue Dragon ???/???
Saffron 51/51, Poisoned (-4 Con), Mindlink (18 rounds), Resist Electricity 30 (long), Biofeedback (9 rounds)
Dragon 2 ???/???

Round 5:

Morgan's Action: Fires a Ray of Exhaustion somehow hitting and penetrating the spell resistance of the beast, causing it to be fatigued!
Fort save: 18

Daeren Action: Casts a spell, which warps and reshapes his body into a pustule marked creature secretes an oily, musk-like chemical that nearly every form of animal life finds offensive.

Dragon's Action: The dragon swoops down into range (setting off Morgan's readied action) attempting to disembowl Daeren Morgan with a claw, but misses since Morgan is rather blurry.
1d20+16-> [18,16] = (34), 1d8+7-> [7,7] = (14), conceal 15% success!

Saffron's Action: Uses her wand of Enfeeblement to sap some strength from the mighty beast, but her nervous twitch causes it to fire straight up instead, missing!

Morgan 51/52, Resist Energy (long), Blur (58 rounds), Alter Self - Trog (+6AC, Long)
Daeren 44/65, Resist Electricity 30 (long), Stoneskin (70hp remaining, long), Alter Self - Trog(+6AC, long)
Blue Dragon ???/???, Fatigued (-2 str/dex, cannot run or charge)(50 rounds)
Saffron 51/51, Poisoned (-4 Con), Mindlink (17 rounds), Resist Electricity 30 (long), Biofeedback (8 rounds)
TelinArtho

An auspicious start for sure - Daeren takes the full brunt of the lightning crashing on him. He takes the shock well though as most of it is absorbed into the resistance spell.

Reflex save for Breath weapon (1d20+6=17) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=344395)

Can I get a spellcraft to identify a spell in place? (from the effect of the magic missile affecting, yet not?) If so - here it is:
Spellcraft (1d20+8=16) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=344398)

It is 80ft straight up right? And hovering? Assuming that is the case, Daeren draws and casts Alter Self (Trog) from a scroll. If it is closer than that - I might need to reconsider.

When's Myrridin getting back? I just don't remember. He should probably start firing arrows at it.

Yes you can, but @20 + spell level to Identify a spell that’s already in place and in effect. You must be able to see or detect the effects of the spell. No action required. No retry, you are unable to discern what spell it is.

It is 80ft straight up right? And hovering? Assuming that is the case, Daeren draws and casts Alter Self (Trog) from a scroll. If it is closer than that - I might need to reconsider.
More of a diagonal, although since it can't hover per se, it's moving forward, heading towards your party right now.

When's Myrridin getting back? I just don't remember. He should probably start firing arrows at it.
I believe he said Wednesday.
TelinArtho

01-24-06, 10:50 AM
Well, if it is flying low enough for it - instead of firing arrows, Morgan will ready to cast Ray of Exhaustion (25+ 6/2*5 = 40ft). If it is not flying that low - just plug it!

I'll cast Alter self though.
waywreth

01-24-06, 11:26 AM
@TelinArtho - What's your adjusted HP/AC with Trog form? Also what's Morgan's with Blur.

I'm holding off on rolling the Dragon's power dive claw attack until after the Ray of Exhaustion is tried because it could be a big influence.
TelinArtho

01-24-06, 11:37 AM
Daeren's AC is adjusted +6 from the spell (to 24); his HP are not adjusted.

Morgan's AC is +6 from Alter Self (to 29), but is unchanged from Blur (blur gives a 20% miss chance from concealment).
TelinArtho

01-24-06, 11:48 AM
Morgan lets loose a ray towards the dragon and it strikes the massive beast fully! It wavers for a bit as the dragon's resistances kick in, but soon the dragon starts to waver himself.

Ranged touch for Ray of Exhaustion (DC14 - Fort partial), CL check to break through SR (1d20+10=25, 1d20+6=22) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=344493)

Wow - not only did I not flub up the hit - it broke through the SR! Go Morgan!

I don't see the miss chance for blur on the dragon's attack.

Since when did the dragon become HUGE? - This matters greatly to me...

Thanks for fixing the size. If it was indeed huge - I was going to have a few fits - because I was planning on using a tanglefoot bag (which can't affect huge opponents...)

For future rounds Daeren acts before Morgan (which only matters, hopefully because I'm going to try to save Morgan from an AoO...). I'll wait for that action until Vath posts his Ray of Enfeeblement.

Saffron crit fails (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=344948) again with the wand. sigh.
TelinArtho

01-24-06, 09:28 PM
I was afraid of that. Morgan needs to move out of the dragon's threatened area - but I still have some buffing I need to do... screw it - we'll see if this works. If it does - Morgan should get the hell out of the way if the dragon takes the AoO...

Daeren sees the predicament and asks Grantis for guidance. Reaching his hand into his bag, he pulls out another ball of fur, throwing it next to the dragon. The horse (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=345194) that forms is immediately surrounded by dragonfear, and is unable to shake it, Daeren doesn't even try to stop it from fleeing.

Will save for horse from bag vs dragon fear (1d20+2=20) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=345200)

Daeren shakes his head at having to do that, but it was truly necessary. He pulls out a scroll from his case, and the stony face of determination returns.

If the dragon takes the bait and takes the AoO against the horse, Morgan should move away, draw his bow and fire. If it doesn't take the AoO - Morgan is probably better off taking the AoO than staying - but I think 5ft stepping, drawing the second scroll of Ray of Exhaustion and casting it is probably warranted at that point.

The scroll that Daeren pulls is his scroll of Enlarge Person (CL2).

Round 6:

Morgan's Action: Take a 5' step away, and draws his second scroll of Ray of Exhaustion. He then casts it from a defensive stance, but fails to penetrate the natural magic resistance of the dragon.

Daeren Action: Reaches into his bag of tricks to pull out a heavy warhorse, who immediately on seeing a dragon within a few feet goes running as fast as it can in the other direction. Daeren then draws a scroll.

Dragon's Action: The dragon sees the horse take off and snorts in derision, keeping her eyes on those tasty adventurers, who always have lots of nice treasure to add to her horde. Moving right next to Morgan again, Cillansha the Sand Wyrm full attacks Morgan with all her might!

1d20+17-> [14,17] = (31) 2d6+10-> [3,5,10] = (18)
1d20+16-> [15, 16] = (31) 1d8+7-> [6, 7]) = (13)

1d20+15-> [11,15] = (26) 1d8+12-> [8,12] = (20) (Blur Successful!)

Her teeth cause a huge gash in Morgan's shoulder, quickly followed by a claw tearing open his arm. The wing buffets however prove his undoing, as he is battered into unconsciousness by the dragon.
In draconic if you happen to speak it... "Foolish little meat puppets. Your bones will decorate my lair soon enough!"

Saffron's Action: Saffron moves dangerously closer and taps Morgan with her Wand of curing.

I'm not sure why I didn't take a 5' step backwards before casting the Ray defensively, but that would've been a good thing to do, as it would prevent the 5' step - full attack option. Looking at the map, that's what I would've chosen to do, just so the 6 attacks wouldn't kill me.

Actually it isn't quite over. That last attack sequence I'm not sure that it is 100% accurate - the interaction with power attack and natural attacks isn't something I'm used to dealing with - and you're not actually dead (although if the dragon gets an action to rectify that...) yet.
Myrridin

01-26-06, 01:19 PM
It should be at -6 (-5 PA, -1 Ray of Exhaustion) on its primary attack, and, if it has Multiattack -8 on all secondary attacks (-5 PA, -1 RoE, and -2 secondary). Without MA, it's at -11 on all secondary attacks (-5 PA, -1 RoE, -5 secondary), so I'm guessing it has MA. Also, my AC is 29, with the Alter self, which only means that the last attack that Blur caused to miss, wouldn't have hit anyways.

Daeren rages and full attacks (1d20+12+2=16, 1d20+7+2=23) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=347845)

I think those both miss, but if they do hit - let me know and I'll roll damage. Right now I should be at 15ft from it - so it can 5ft step towards me (in which case it can only attack with its bite), or it can move towards me and attack once - in which case I'll get an AoO from it. I could also move away - but that would also provoke... So movement for it is great for me...

I haven't rolled the attacks for round 9 yet. Also, don't forget to include the +16 hp for the rage.

Daeren's attacks in round 9 (1d20+12+2=23, 2d6+7+2+3+2d6=30, 1d20+7+2=28, 2d6+7+2+3+2d6=21) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=347918)

(Hopefully the second one hits... Of course - now I realize that I had to move away to do it... so either the attack doesn't happen - or it gets pushed to the AoO...)

AoO from Daeren on dragon (1d20+12+2=28, 2d6+7+2+3+2d6=18) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=347919)

Well, it was fun...

(Hopefully the second one hits... Of course - now I realize that I had to move away to do it... so either the attack doesn't happen - or it gets pushed to the AoO...)

No hits sorry, AC29 (10, -1 Size, +17 Natural Armor, -2 Dex (-1AC), +4 Mage armor, +4 Shield) Additionally, she stayed at 10' away this round but make your AoO.

Round 10:

Daeren's Action: Fighting bravely against insurmountable odds, Daeren lashes out twice with his mighty spear, but is again foiled by the dragon's natural armor that protects her.
1d20+12+2-> [11,12,2] = (25), 2d6+7+2+3+2d6-> [3,2,7,2,3,5,1] = (23)

AoO - As the dragon closes, Daeren leans into his strike but fails to connect.
1d20+12+2-> [8,7,2] = (22), 2d6+7+2+3+2d6-> [2,3,7,2,3,3,5] = (25)

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's: Her hide to hums and crackles faintly with built-up static electricity, as the charge builds and the odor of ozone and sand is apparent. She unleashes a bolt of electricity towards Daeren, seeing it fail to kill him, lumbers closer.

Well, that went about like I thought it would...

"Daeren... you hear me over there, throught that fog bank (where the heck did that come from?)... Saffron tries over and over to concentrate on the mindlink. "Grab my pack dwarf! The fire stone, come on...ah heck, he's too damn busy to hear me..." The spirit form of the the brass dragon futilely swings her arms through the magical backpack, somehow oblivious to her own mangled body laying next to it.

"Crap.... there's gotta be something I can do.... What happened to that blasted medalion? What the?!" Saffron claw catches on something as it passes throught the pack, a string. She tugs, and the necklace pulls clean throught the side of the pack. It's a wooden medalion with a dragon carved into it, painted silver. "Come on! I can't grab the fire stone but..." She stops herself just before going on a sacriligious tirade. She stares at the single coiled dragon for a moment before flopping down to watch the battle. She slips the necklace around her neck, "Bahamut! We need a hand down here!

Not two spear thrusts pass without Saffron getting fed up. She hovers up into the mist, over to where the blue dragon is flailing all of it's limbs. Saffron proceeds to breathe fire all over it, rake at it's eyes and claw into it's wings. The blue may feel it somewhere in it's soul, and it sure beats sitting around doing nothing.

Feel free to help yourself to any of my equipment... not that you'll have any time, but who knows; dice gods are fickle.

Round 11:

She's standing next to you now.

Daeren's Action: Unnerved by the electricity still dancing through his veins, Daeren once again misses the Dragon with his longspear.
AoO - The spear clinks off the scales with no effect.

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's action:
With a roar, Cillansha unleashes a flurry of teeth, claws, wings and tail at Daeren.
1d20+17-> [6,17] = (23), 2d6+14-> [1,3,14] = (18-10=8)
1d20+16-> [11,16] = (27), 1d8+7-> [6,7] = (13-10=3)
1d20+16-> [20!,16] = (36), 1d8+7-> [1,7] = (8-10=0) (not confirmed)

1d20+15-> [12,15] = (27), 1d8+12-> [2,12] = (14)

AoO - none (unless you wanted to move back, but to be honest it's very likely a moot point now).

M = Morgan -2/52, Resist Energy (long), Blur (ends round 64), Alter Self - Trog (+6AC, Long), Unconscious and stable
D = Daeren -31/65, Resist Electricity 30 (long), Stoneskin (40hp remaining, long), Alter Self - Trog(+6AC, long), Raging, AC21, dead

Sadly poor Morgan never wakes up, although after what happens to Daeren, it might have been a better thing. So ends "Grounding the Dragon".

Sorry all - the SR and powerattack is really what did you in. Perhaps a smaller dragon next time. At the least I hope you had fun.

Quests and Campaigns that take place in the non-protected city districts aswell as all adventures beyond the city walls are much more dangerous. If you die outside the Nimbus, you will not gain any XP or Gold for your Quest. You will lose every XP and Gold that you gained during the Quest. Your Character is basically like when he entered the Quest ...minus what he spent during the adventure.

The dragon has likely heard the players (if not she starts in the top right corner asleep). If she has, she has casted a silent image of herself sleeping on the central altar. She will wait for the first player to enter and then use her breath weapon on the 2nd (guessing it's a caster). She will then close to melee, powerattacking anyone in light armor for 10, then 5 if she has trouble hitting.

I enjoyed it Waywreth. I knew going in that our actual chances against the Dragon were minimal at best...what with it being ECL 11, and us being level 8 characters. *shrug* I'm happy that we took out the two ECL 10 encounters, that's a pretty decent job there by the three of us.

Next time I'll try a smaller dragon, and something closer to my level. Good job running it; I'm impressed that it came to melee, I figured it'd just strafe us until we were dead.

Ummm... something doesn't look right here. According to the stat block, the dragon has a +23 mod to attack and deals 2d6+6 damage with its bite. During the fight, it has a -2 str - so that goes to +22, 2d6+5.

1d20+17-> [6,17] = (23), 2d6+14-> [1,3,14] = (18-10=8)
1d20+16-> [11,16] = (27), 1d8+7-> [6,7] = (13-10=3)
1d20+16-> [20!,16] = (36), 1d8+7-> [1,7] = (8-10=0) (not confirmed)
1d20+16-> [8,16] = (24), 1d6+7-> [4,7] = (11-10=8)
1d20+16-> [9,16] = (25), 1d6+7-> [6,7] = (13-2=11)
1d20+15-> [12,15] = (27), 1d8+12-> [2,12] = (14)

During the fight, you were applying a +9 to the damage of the bite when power attacking - rather than the +5 it should have had.

I must say that probably makes a bit of a difference... doubtful to be enough - but I need to go back and look.

EDIT: It does make a difference - Morgan wouldn't have been downed in round 6!

I was under the impression PA damage was doubled much like a 2H weapon when used on the primary attack? I guess that assumption was incorrect. Up to you all. We can go back to round 6, but I honestly don't see you winning.

I'm willing to give it a try, but honestly, I think it'll delay Morgan's going down by one round, same deal with Saffron's. I'm not sure if it'll make a long term difference or not. I'll go with group consensus on this.

Round 6: Take 2

Morgan's Action: Take a 5' step away, and draws his second scroll of Ray of Exhaustion. He then casts it from a defensive stance, but fails to penetrate the natural magic resistance of the dragon.

Daeren Action: Reaches into his bag of tricks to pull out a heavy warhorse, who immediately on seeing a dragon within a few feet goes running as fast as it can in the other direction. Daeren then draws a scroll of enlarge person.

1d20+17-> [14,17] = (31) 2d6+10-> [3,5,10] = (18)
1d20+16-> [15, 16] = (31) 1d8+7-> [6, 7]) = (13)

1d20+16-> [19, 16] = (35) 1d6+7->[2, 7]) = (9)
1d20+15-> [11,15] = (26) 1d8+12-> [8,12] = (20) (Blur Successful!)

Her teeth cause a huge gash in Morgan's shoulder, quickly followed by a claw tearing open his arm. The wing buffets however prove his undoing, as he is battered by the dragon
In draconic if you happen to speak it... "Foolish little meat puppets. Your bones will decorate my lair soon enough!"

Saffron's Action: Heals Morgan with her wand.

Morgan's Action: Somehow manages to haste the party from his prone position.

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's Action: With a sadistic grin, Cillansha quietly steps towards Saffron and lays into her with all her might, causing the poor brave Saffron to collapse in a pile of her own blood, barely alive. She turns towards Daeren... and says in common, "If you leave everything you have, I'll give you a 10 minute head start while I eat your friends and grind their bones."

It would be if the primary attack was the dragon's only attack - (in other words, when you normally apply 1.5 times the strength damage - you apply double the power attack mods).

I'm just thinking aloud here:

First of all, Morgan would have cast Haste - which gives all of us a +1 to hit, an extra attack per round, +1 to AC. Since you had misnoted my AC as 21 (it should have been 22) - this would makes its attack in round 9 miss entirely, plus it saves me 8 hp from 2 other hits. Also it would have to actually take down Morgan still - meaning the round that it took down Saffron would have been a little different - Especially since Saffron could have used her Fire Elemental Gem instead.

The round that it full attacks Saffron - would have been spent on Morgan instead - missing on its first two attacks, and then taking him down.

In addition, with the +1 to hit, I succeed in my second attack and my AoO in round 9 - scoring an extra 39 damage. Plus there's another 3 attacks I think I'd need to make.

I don't know - I think we have little to lose by extending this a little (and it seems to me that we have the time... up to you I guess.
waywreth

01-27-06, 02:28 PM
Actually the Dragon does 4 less damage, which is still enough to knock Morgan down (-52 hp = 18+13+12+9), Morgan has 51hp), until Saffron heals (for 3). So, Morgan is prone next to the Dragon, who would kill Saffron next round anyway. Morgan might not get the spell off (very likely).

And Daeren's AC was 24, -2 from Raging, -1 for Enlarge? Also note - the only reason it stayed in melee vs. Daeren was it was undamaged. It would withdraw and attack from the air otherwise.
TelinArtho

01-27-06, 02:32 PM
Ooh - forgot the raging part... AC18 normally +6 for alter self -2 enlarge (-1 from loss of dex, -1 for size) -2 rage = 20

Nevermind on that one...
Myrridin

01-27-06, 02:36 PM
Prone doesn't stop me from casting a spell, at least in the Condition Summary in the SRD it doesn't. I'll be shredded the next round, but at least Haste will go off.

Morgan concentrates while on the ground, and tries to cast his spell defensively. Fortunately for them, he manages (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348085) to hold on to his spell and his armor doesn't (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348086) block the energy from coursing through his body.

I believe this is a legal action, just let me know.

The above were my attacks from round 9 (might as well use the AoO that wouldn't be drawn as my 3rd attack). Both hit AC28, both get a +1 because of haste to hit AC29.

EDIT: If it does draw the AoO after all, here's the 3rd attack:

3rd attack for round 9 (take 2) (1d20+12+2+1=22, 2d6+7+2+3+2d6=31) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348097)

UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure.
First make a concentration check, then spell failure, then make a Spell resistance check (DC19), then a dispel check.

There's no spell resistance on Dispel Magic.

Myrridin - Ignore my rolls for your concentration and ASF. We'll count yours. We'll use my dispel roll though since I don't see one for you.

Morgan again tries to summon the magic inside him, while not taking an attack from the dragon. He succeeds (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348100), just barely. His armor feels almost weightless as the magical energy isn't (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348102) impeded in any way.

He flings his had at the dragon, directing the magical energy at it, with the idea that he'll at least strip the protections from it. (Dispel Check: 7+6=13 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348110))

Damn, I believe that just misses in trying to bring down the magic on the creature. Ah well.

I must've missed your Dispel roll. We can use that, doesn't matter really to me.

TelinArtho - From here on, just reroll since we have an entirely different situation. After getting hit last round, she took off into the sky and is currently 50' above you.

Round 10, Take 2:

Daeren's Action: Tags the dragon with beautiful shot of his tanglefoot bag, but he fails to glue (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348131) her wings.

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's action: Breathes a bolt of lightning at Daeren.
Damage on breath weapon - 10d8-> [2,8,4,3,3,7,3,8,6,4] = (48-30=18)
Reflex save- 1d20+5-> [15,5] = (20)
Breath refresh - 1d4-> [1] = (1)

Saffron's Action
Stabilize - 1d100-> [03] = (03) (succeed)

M = Morgan -11/52, Dead
D = Daeren 61/65, Resist Electricity 30 (long), Stoneskin (70hp remaining, long), Alter Self - Trog (long), Haste (ends round 15), Rage (ends round 17), Enlarge Person (ends round 20)
B = Blue Dragon ???-39/???, Fatigued (-2 str/dex, cannot run or charge)(ends round 55), Entangled (-2 to hit, -4 dex)(ends round 13)
S = Saffron -6/51, Unconscious and stable

Round 11, Take 2:

Daeren's Action: Tosses an alchemist fire at the dragon.

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's action: Attempts to cast mage armor but fails (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348149)!

D = Daeren 61/65, Resist Electricity 30 (long), Stoneskin (70hp remaining, long), Alter Self - Trog (long), Haste (ends round 15), Rage (ends round 16), Enlarge Person (ends round 27)

@TelinArtho - Let me know what you want to do the next few rounds, please include "if she's in the air" and "if she lands". Also check what I have your rage and enlarge person to make sure I have them ending on the correct rounds.

@Myrridin - Helluva an effort.

50ft above me or 50ft above the ground? Assuming that I can still reach it with my tanglefoot bag - here goes!

Daeren draws a globulous bag from his pack and throws it with all his might. Hitting the dragon dead on, it explodes, entangling the dragon.

Tanglefoot bag (if 45ft mod is -8, if 50ft, mod is -10) - duration for entangled condition (1d20+6+3-1-1-8=13, 2d4=3) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348125)

On the above - if its 50ft away, the touch should still hit AC11. Reflex DC15 to avoid having its wings entangled and falling to the ground ... (don't forget its -2 dex from fatigue and the -4 from being entangled) - COME ON bad roll for dragon...

On the durations, I cast Enlarge Person (CL2) from the scroll on round 7 - so it would end on round 27 before my action.

I raged on round 8, and it lasts 3+CON (5) rounds = 8 - so it will end on round 16 before my action.

Ouch. Well, that was certainly to be expected. And you know what, I'll take it. At least I got some spells off that may be helpful, and I did manage to strip her of the Mage Armor, which let a hit or two get through.

As I said before, a well played dragon at this level is a massive challenge.

Now if Daeren wins, he gets all the XP and gold...nice! ;)
TelinArtho

01-27-06, 03:59 PM
Not that its likely to fail - but did you make the concentration check for the entanglement (DC16?) -- worth a try...

Anyway - I'm not going to be able to do much without knowing its position relative to me - because I have several short range options.

Seeing the dragon ascend further, Daeren paces about, draws a small vial and applies it to his spear.

Draw and apply Oil of Bless Weapon to longspear (not much - but if I crit - it automatically confirms

EDIT: I thought I saw that it moved up to be 70ft above me? If it is only 50ft above draw and throw an alchemist's fire.

Ok updated round 10 with the goings on. It's now Daeren's action for round 11, with the annoyed dragon still 50' above him all covered in goo.

Edit: Sorry you missed my edit but you can do that anyway with round 11 action because she's going to cast mage armor this time. I just forgot about the breath weapon.

Edit2: Check on alchemist fire. You can roll. She will cast (attempt) Mage armor after that.
TelinArtho

Here's the alchemist's fire:

Alchemist's fire (1d20+6+3-1-1-8=8, 1d6=3) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348144)

Also - unless the dragon has hover, I don't think he can be breathing on me and still flying. Why? Because as she is entangled, she can only move at maximum half-speed. If the dragon has to have a minimum forward speed of half-speed - then she has to spend a full round of movement to do so.

@TelinArtho sent a PM, wanted to get this done today as I'm not around tomrrow and sporadic on Sunday. Of course the dragon is not stupid so having her stay and fight overwhelming odds is foolish since she's quite smart. Someone wake Saffron back up.

Of course monsters retreating happens often in Pen/Paper but can such a thing happen in Quests? If not she'll land to attack and we'll just do it that way.
Myrridin

01-27-06, 04:25 PM
Monsters are allowed to retreat in quests...though I'm not sure how it's handled. It might be considered a "win" for the questors, I have no idea.

Side note: If, by some miracle, my side ends up winning, what happens to/for Morgan? I know I'm actually, well and truely dead.

TelinArtho

01-27-06, 04:40 PM
Well I would say you can handle it one of two ways without being overly unfair to us:

1. Quests have their own "delay" penalty - if the opponent leaves the area to recuperate and do not return in the specified time - then the questors have defeated that challenge.

2. When an encounter flees it is considered defeated and the players can then move on - if there were future encounters for the quest then the players might re-encounter the same opponent.

As it is unfair to us to allow it to run off to recuperate - I'm not real fond of that. Intelligent though it is - if it runs off and comes back later (even if it is only 10 minutes) - as a DM - I would treat them as 2 separate encounters.
waywreth

01-27-06, 04:48 PM
I concur. In the interest of keeping this fair and since this is a board vs. P&P, the dragon will simply land and try to fight it out. We now return you to your regularly scheduled dragon beating. We'll pick up at round 12...

@The dragon is currently 50' above you and plans to land this round. Your action. (And we'll say you haven't drawn nor used Acid Arrow nor Bless Weapon oil yet)

Round 12:
Daeren's Action:

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's action:

D = Daeren 61/65, Resist Electricity 30 (long), Stoneskin (70hp remaining, long), Alter Self - Trog (long), Haste (ends round 15), Rage (ends round 16), Enlarge Person (ends round 27)

Ah yes the Alche fire does hit. Also roll an AoO as the she lands next to you (provoking) and attempts to cast Mage armor again (defensively).

Round 12:
Daeren's Action: Toss an alchemist fire and hits.

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's action: (barely) casts mage armor.

D = Daeren 61/65, Resist Electricity 30 (long), Stoneskin (70hp remaining, long), Alter Self - Trog (long), Haste (ends round 15), Rage (ends round 16), Enlarge Person (ends round 27)

After your AoO from round 12, feel free to continue on with round 13 action. She is now next to you (not going to bother with map unless you want me to).

Round 13:

Daeren's Action: Daeren connects when she first lands, then stabs her again with the spear for good measure.
Edit - and then she burns a bit from the alchemist fire.

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's action: With caution to the wind, the dragon attacks Daeren for all she's worth (PA=10).
1d20+10-> [11,10] = (21), 2d6+15-> [1,1,15] = (17-10) = 7
1d20+9-> [14,9] = (23), 1d8+12-> [7,12] = (19-10) = 9

1d20+9-> [9,9] = (18), 1d6+12-> [1,12] = (13)

D = Daeren 39/65, Resist Electricity 30 (long), Stoneskin (30hp remaining, long), Alter Self - Trog (long), Haste (ends round 15), Rage (ends round 16), Enlarge Person (ends round 27)
B = Blue Dragon ???-102/???, Fatigued (-2 str/dex, cannot run or charge)(ends round 55), Entangled (-2 to hit, -4 dex)(ends round 13), Mage Armor

M = Morgan - Dead

Then full attack on the round after:

Full attack on dragon in round 13 (3rd attack is at -5 from the rolled amount (applied in italics)) (1d20+12+2+1=19, 2d6+7+2+3+2d6=24, 1d20+12+2+1=27, 2d6+7+2+3+2d6=33, 1d20+12+2+1=19-5=14, 2d6+7+2+3+2d6=26) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348241)

Daeren roars a challenge as the dragon comes back to the ground:

That's right - Come to Papi!

And stabs her with his spear numerous times - wounding her greatly with the baneful magic placed on the spear.

Please double check my math for the dragon.

Round 14:

Daeren's Action: Gets a few solid stabs in, but that drated force armor protects the dragon.

Cillansha the Sand Wyrm's action: Takes a massive bite out of Daeren's shoulder, followed by a flurry of other hits.
1d20+12-> [20!,12] = (32), Confirm (23), 2d6+5-> [1,6,5] = (12), 2d6+15-> [1,5,15] = (21+12=33-10=23)

Daeren stabs the dragon again and again - causing her to roar in pain as he lands 2 more solid strikes into her flank.

Well power attack is a mean feat. I tried to balance that by giving her no useful treasure, and crappy spells (shield only lasted 3 rounds when she first cast it).

Then again out of all the questlords I don't think you get to complain about Critical hits. /grin.

01-27-06, 06:23 PM
Well run.

This quest actually highlights very well the problems I have with Daeren - he relies too much on buffing - and isn't strong enough on his own. Sure if he had had another 2 rounds to buff with before raging - he could have cast Shield and Cat's grace (add in a 3rd for bull's strength and suddenly he hits like 4 more times... grrr) - but as it was I was taking too long.

In a campaign I have never had a character rely so much on things.

Thanks for running it.
