Week 1
A strange letter comes for Bulgar from Druids to the north east. After meeting up with a new friend, they head out to the far eastern edge of the high forest. They meet a druid who explains the situation, and leads them through the forest to the lake that the green dragon is living at.

On the path, they nearly walk under an assassin vine, but Bulgar's keen eye spots it, and they shread it with a hail of arrows before proceeding.

Week 2
Their guide leads them to the lake where the dragon lives. A relative of the famous gladiator, Daeren Stronghammer, Bulgar has now come of age to prove himself. With a long family history of dragon-slayers when the time called for them, the Stronghammer clan has never stepped down from a challenge. That being said, many of the Stronghammer clan have been doomed to very short lifespans as a result of their quests.

Bulgar is a devout follower of Grantis - the dwarven god of Justice and Retribution. Although just an initiate, he is a bright student of the clerical arts and is an accomplished healer. As all members of the Stronghammer clan, he's received martial training in order to prepare him for the trials ahead.

Bulgar is one of 6 siblings who are making their way out of the dwarven lands of their birth - ready to prove themselves or ready to move on with their lives. Bulgar has taken it as his personal responsibility to take care of the dragon that felled his cousin Daeren and to restore Daeren's remains to their family tomb.

About Grantis, Dwarven god of Justice and Retribution

Grantis is a Lawful Neutral god among the dwarves for the most part, although in recent ages, some humans have come to follow his guidelines quite closely. The clerics of Grantis preside over judgements no matter how small or big within the dwarven community, including handing out decisions and executions.

Followers of Grantis are allowed to express themselves in their dress, with their holy symbol emblazoned very prominently. Grantis's holy symbol is that of a hammer on both sides of a scale.

Followers of Grantis are rarely seen outside of the Dwarven communities. The rare few who become travelers, mostly do so for a temporary pilgrimage or to communicate with other temples to Grantis throughout the world. The vast majority however, tend to stay in their homeland.

Grantis's favored weapon is a warhammer. Clerics of Grantis may choose from the following domains: Protection, Strength, Law, Earth

Buffs and Prefight actions:
Bring Leopold and command him with heel.
Do not equip shield by default.

Bulgar and Leopold are two bricks out of the same barrel - they pride on being able to drive someone to the ground and forcing them to submit to their punishment. As such, Bulgar usually starts battle with a bola in one hand and carrying his Guisarme. Once in range (even maximum range), Bulgar will try to throw the bolas to trip his opponent while Leopold moves up to keep the opponent on the ground. Bulgar is too slow to close to melee on his own usually - so he lets Leopold keep the opponent cornered.

Against a faster opponent - particularly horsemen, Bulgar throws the bolas to trip the horse. Once he runs out of them however or if the opponent stays out of range, he will break down and use his bow instead.

Bulgar carries the waraxe and shield of his own make - but rarely uses them - as he prefers the guisarme in most circumstances.

Erithmu

02-15-07, 12:53 AM
Erithmu stood outside the bar. The note in his hands said that he should meet his client here. Stepping inside he realized he had found the right place. A mix bar, he saw the dragon hunter at a table eating one of the taverns, as noted by the holy symbol on his tunic and shield. "Bulgar Stronghammer?" Seeing him nod Erithmu handed over the note, "Erithmu Darkmane, you seem to be the dwarf who is the expert on dragons, I was wondering if I might accompany you on your next hunt?
TelinArtho

02-15-07, 11:13 AM
Ah - it is good you have come. But I am not yet no expert on dragons. That distinction would best be made about my predecessors... Perhaps you have heard of my dead-cousin Daeren? Now he was a dragon slayer of worthy note...

Bulgar takes the offered hand and shakes it.

It seems that we shall be heading off to take care of a particularly nasty fellow who has been terrorizing some druids. The letter I've got isn't terribly detailed, but I have a sneaking suspicion a Green Dragon is at fault here - given the location, and the manner of attacks.

If you are still up for it - let's get going. It has been too long since I have faced a dragon. By my age, my ancestor Thratle Stronghammer had faced and killed twenty dragons... I've got some catching up to do...
Erithmu

02-15-07, 01:31 PM
"I must admit that I am not much of a hunter myself, however I might be able to provide some basic information on our travels. I find myself more of a scholar than a combatant, but combat is not always a matter of brute strength."
TelinArtho

02-15-07, 01:33 PM
As they leave the tavern, Bulgar whistles once and then a second time before a large bloodhound comes bounding down the street cheerfully.

Well in that case, you'd best stay behind Leopold here. He might be the only thing between you and the dragon when it comes to it...
Erithmu

02-15-07, 06:49 PM
Erithmu nodded. I see from the emblem on your plate that you are a man of some faith, I can only assume that you have some training in magical arts. I think you will find my skills like more in the magical arts and study than combat. Magical arts do allow for allowance to aid combat, but I find interest in the research.

Erithmu walked next to the dwarf, his elven heritage seeming odd standing next to the dwarf, but the hunt was on.
TelinArtho

02-16-07, 10:05 AM
Faith indeed - I am a follower of Grantis's teachings, for His words have proven effective and true. I try not to disturb him too much with my own matters though...
Vathelokai

02-17-07, 03:26 PM
The three of them travel north out of town toward the high forest. Bulgar looks over the note, written on leaf-like paper, for some hints but it contains little more than a request for help and directions to the area. It is only signed with a M.

Days later High Forest is in sight and they turn eastward, moving parallel to the elven lands. Although the weather is chilly, the enchantments on the forest keep it from going below freezing. They spot the occasional traveler, but most of the trip is uneventful.

On the far east of the forest, past the land of the wood elves the trees become more sparse, forming small clusters here and there. They follow the directions on the note and look for a landmark, a huge stone sticking straight from the ground in a pillar. Soon enough they find it, closer to the thicker wood elf territory than they though. Sitting on the ground next to it is a woman in a green dress, with a fur shawl over her shoulders.

They approach bearing the note, and the woman confirms that she is 'M'. "Greetings Strongbeard and company. Your clan has a reputation we would like you to live up to. Deeper into the forest from this location is a lake, where a green dragon has taken residence. It is a crafty one, and has made offers to the people in this region. It wishes to own the property around itself and the lake. It speaks of peace, but those who have defied it have gone missing or found dead. I am guardian of this region, but I do not have the power to fight it."
TelinArtho

02-19-07, 10:32 AM
'Tis Stronghammer ma'am - but thank you for your knowledge of my family's history. This here is Erithmu Darkmane - his presence will help ensure victory and Leopold here has never steered me wrong in the pursuit of dragons.

Sounds like a grave matter indeed. Is there any sort of map we can work with? Otherwise, I will be happy if you can just point the way - and we shall set out immediately.
Vathelokai

02-19-07, 08:25 PM
"No map is nessicary. I can show you the way." The woman gets up and brushes herself off. Then she immediately begins walking deeper into the forest.

There is a path that she sticks to, but the forest becomes denser and darker over the next few hours. As they hit a perticularly dense patch of woods, Bulgar pulls the party to a stop. "Ya' see that? Up ahead?" he whispers. The others squint, but see nothing. "That vine up there, the purple one, climbing up the side of the tree about 80 ft down the path. I've seen those before underground. Didn't know they grew up here too. It waits for you to get close then drops on you like a net and tries to choke you to death."

Erithmu looks at him quizicly. The druid drops her jaw. "I can't believe I didn't spot an assassin vine." She looks positively ashamed of herself.

Lucky, lucky, spot check there, Bulgar.

There's a 5 ft wide path leading to it, but it is curves a little right by the vine, so no charging. The woods every where else impeed movement, but are not so dense as to create concealment/miss-chance.
Erithmu

02-19-07, 09:29 PM
Assassin vine? I have only come across those briefly in my research. All are stories similar to Mr. Stronghammer's stories. However most of my research indicates that they are ... slower ...

Might I suggest bowstring?

So ... I just realized ... I forgot to buy ammo
@Vath: Front me 60 arrows? :D
Vathelokai

02-19-07, 09:32 PM
Sure thing. Though it does seem appropriate to a cloistered cleric :)
TelinArtho

02-20-07, 10:38 AM
Yes, the bow should suit nicely for this. Leopold stay.

You might want to move back a bit there ma'am - wouldn't want you to get stuck in this mess.

Bulgar takes his bow off his shoulder and nocks an arrow. Taking careful aim, he sends it into the vine ahead.

Just how far away are we? Leopold will stay beside me unless it gets to melee - and then he will defend. Otherwise, fire arrows and move back as long as it allows us to do that.
Erithmu

80ft ... and it has 5ft movement ... yea ... we win ... shoot it to death.

The druid stands back while they draw out bows and begin firing. The first shots pierce it and it drops to the ground. It begins slithering through the undergrowth like a snake, slowly moving toward them.

The next few arrows simply bounce off if it. As it begins to get close, Bulgar taunts it, "Get right up here so I can get a better shot at you."

The druid interupts, "No! Don't get close. It controls the grass like the dark forces control undead." Glad they got the advice, Bulgar and Erithmu begin walking backwards through the trees as they fire. The vine is impossibly resiliant, deflecting almost every blow. The ones that stick don't seem to do much too it; it slithers along and breaks the arrows off without pause.

After minutes of this, they begin to consider giving up, having a terse discussion while they walk slowly away from the miniature juggernaut. They vote that they could probably go through half their supply of arrows before getting too worried. And it nearly comes to pass.

Finally they give in to cursing it while they fire, and in one sudden and anti-climactic moment the vine stops. They stop to wait a minute to see if it's some kind of trick. As the minute expires the vine begins smoking. They jump back behind the oaken cover and watch as it smokes and begins burning like a slow fuse, from the tip all the way back to the roots nearly 200 feet away. It seems to burn itself out, leaving a charred line through the bushes.

After arrow recovery, Bulgar used 14 and Erithmu used 15 arrows (out of the 18 you each fired).
Erithmu

02-20-07, 11:01 PM
Curious ... I'm surprised that it was so resilient to our arrows. The death knell was rather odd, I'm not sure that the vine was from our plane. Alas it is dead and burned up, so we will be unable to study it.

Shall we continue on our way?

@Vath: I have knowledges for most of the primary monster skills and Lore if I don't. Appropriate monster info would be spiffy.
Vathelokai

02-20-07, 11:37 PM
I rolled both and you got unlucky rolls. In round 1 of the roller.

... Ak! got the DC wrong. Thought it was 15+HD, not 10+HD. Rolled a lore check to identify assassin vine (which failed), then rolled a know: planes (which I see now succeeded).

... looking closer, the type of the creature dosn't change with the fiendish template. Strange, but know:planes tecnicly wouldn't work, unless it can be used to identify the [extraplanar] subtype.
Erithmu

02-20-07, 11:49 PM
Not a big deal, but I probably would have cast magic weapon on one of our bows.
TelinArtho

02-21-07, 10:13 AM
Good thing it was noticed before we got too close. One of my third cousins fell prey to one of those - it took four of my brethren to bring the massive thing down - and he died in the process... of course, those cousins are from the weak side of the family...

Yes - let's get going.
Vathelokai

02-21-07, 10:09 PM
They move forward through the deeper part of the woods for close to an hour before the trees begin to get thinner again. There is a smell of water in the air. The trail begins to lead down hill and there is a blue glitter in the distance. "There is the place. I think we might want to get ready. No way to know if the dragon is awake or not." The druid pulls out 2 potions. She drinks one and keeps the other in hand.
TelinArtho

02-22-07, 10:34 AM
How close would you think it is? I wouldn't want to prepare and find out that we prepared too soon...

Well, I suppose its probably better to be a little cautious about it...

And with that Bulgar calls Leopold to his side and draws a scroll from his scroll case. Reading it, he touches Leopold. He then draws another scroll and casts it - touching his own shoulder. He sets the guisarme in his hands and stares ahead.

Well, that's all I can count on for now. Are the two of you ready?

Resist Energy (CL2) from scrolls on Leopold and Bulgar. Draw Guisarme. Let's put Leopold on a heel command for now.
Erithmu

02-22-07, 10:52 AM
Erithmu nods and casts his own protection spell against the Acid breath. I am ready, I have a shorter spell that I will try to cast on you should the situation arise, but do not let me interfere with your dragon hunting.

Erithmu checked his bow again, this was not going to be an indoor fight.
Vathelokai

02-22-07, 11:46 PM
The protected crew inches forward through the trees. As they get close, they see that there is a 20 ft strip of solid clear land between the treeline and the water edge. The lake is not too large; a practiced swimmer could make it across without pausing to float. The water is a deep blue, a sign that it was very deep.

As they get close enough to see the area. The druid hunches down. "Yes... she's close." She drinks the potion she has been holding in hand for the last few minutes. Then looks around. "She's going to be really mad about the vine, I bet." Before either of them has a chance to understand what she ment, she grabs Erithmu's arm and spins him around trying to put him in a headlock, but the cleric slips out of her grasp.

Well, that was fun for me :)

Failed a number of bluff checks, but you won initiative after the suprise round. What'cha gonna do about it?

Edited: grapple mod was wrong.
Erithmu

02-23-07, 11:19 AM
With a quick sidestep, Erithmu puts some force in his voice "Fall!" The mental and vocal command strikes at the would be friend.

Take a 5ft step to give Bulgar/Leopold a charging lane.
Cast Command: Fall DC 14
TelinArtho

02-23-07, 11:25 AM
If Bulgar is able to charge, he will charge and use his strength domain power (+3 str = 18 str for one round) and try to trip our deceiver (if she has already fallen from the command, don't bother tripping, just kill her...). If the trip succeeds, follow up attack obviously.

Leopold will be given the attack command next round if she hasn't attacked me yet and Bulgar will just attack next round.

What devil'sh ways you have there ma'am! Your treachery shall be reaped upon you tenfold.
Vathelokai

02-24-07, 11:08 AM
"Fall! Erithmu yells as he steps back.

The druid looks at him wryly and says, "No, you fall!"

While they are both distracted, Bulgar charges in, fueled with the strength of Grantis. He hits the druids leg, but she dances around and keeps her footing.

The druid does a spinning kick, missing Bulgar's windpipe by an inch. She lands next to Erithmu and grabs his arm. In one fluid motion, she spins him and brings his arm behind his back, putting him in a choke hold that nearly breaks his arm, and pointing him like a human shield at Bulgar.

Leopold, seeing his master nearly stomped, runs around behind and bites the druid in the calf, dragging her and Erithmu to the ground.

Erithmu takes 12 damage from a crit to start grapple (as per coco prison house rule on grapples and crits). Druid passed the trip vs. Bulgar, but failed the trip vs Leopold. Not quite sure how that resolves (tripping one of the people in a grapple). Bulgar is using his divine strength power currently.

Erithmu feeling some confidence, moves while the fall as he learned about in his reading of the Githzerai monks and moving with the flow of motion he made an effort to pin the druid to the ground

I'll go with a pin move here.

Don't have time to post much right now - attack the druid in the grapple freely. Leopold as well.
Vathelokai

02-27-07, 12:12 AM
Made a mistake; forgot to add that mage armor potion she drank durring buffing into the AC. Result is that Leopold's bites missed, and she wasn't tripped.

Erithmu continues trying to force the druid to the ground, but cannot. She seems impossibly fast, countering his moves faster than he can come up with them. Bulgar comes around from the side and brings his axe up two handed, biting into the druid repeatedly. Leopold snaps at the druid, though he seems very reluctanct to do so. He can't seem to clamp his teeth through whatever magic is protecting the druid.

The druid realizes that she cannot defend herself from the dwarven axe while holding the cleric. She tries to wiggle away, but Erithmu holds her long enough for Bulgar to get another swing. She looks very wounded, but she dosn't slow down and eventually slips out of the grapple, taking a step back and putting her fists up defensively.

She's taken 20 damage, Erithmu has taken 12.
She has taken a 5 ft step away from the grapple after exiting it.
Your initiative.
Erithmu

02-27-07, 02:25 AM
Erithmu pulled his bow and fired in effort to bring the woman down. He was not sure that it would work, knowing that many of the monk orders were experts at deflecting arrows with their bare hands. His movement took him behind Bulgar, but not enough to draw cover.

Move away while drawing bow, and then fire off a shot.
TelinArtho

02-27-07, 10:07 AM
Do ye yield? For such treachery it is more than you deserve, but I have little interest in spilling more blood.

Bulgar did not wait for an answer while he continued his attacks. If she wanted to submit, then she would have to be very clear about it.

Keep attacking as before - try to flank with Leopold.
Vathelokai

02-28-07, 12:36 AM
"I will never yeild against the orders of my mistress." With that the battle continues. Erithmu fires an arrow which is deflected by a thin magic aura around the druid. He takes heart that it was the mage armor and not any special training in deflection. Bulgar waits a second for Leopold to run around to snap at the druid's rear before charging the flanked lady. She spins with the grace of a dancer and grabs the axe after it misses her. Then before Bulgar can pull back she clocks him across the jaw with enough force to nearly black him out. The axe falls to the ground as a second swing slams him in the gut.
Erithmu miss, Leopold miss, Bulgar charge and miss, Druid hit with stunning fist then second flurry attack for total 7 damage.

Erithmu keeps backing away and fires again but cannot penetrate the wards. Leopold dosn't fare much better and Bulgar does all he can to regain his wits. The druid decides to leave the dwarf and chase the cleric. Bulgar takes a swing with a spiked boot, but the druid dodges and charges Erithmu. The cleric tries to defend with his bow, but the druid punches him in the ribs and causes a cracking sound.
Erithmu miss, Leopold miss, Bulgar stunned (failed fort), Druid charges Erithmu and hit for 6 damage. Leopold and Bulgar misses AoO.

Currently, Bulgar and Leopold are 60 ft from Erithmu and the Druid. Axe is on the ground. Erithmu is based. Druid has taken 20 dmg. Bulgar has taken 7 (with 29 left), Erithmu has taken 18 (and has 6 left).

Running a bit late, but considering the situation, getting tactics seems the best.
Erithmu

02-28-07, 03:11 AM
Step back, draw wand, use wand.
TelinArtho

02-28-07, 10:24 AM
I'm confused - is my axe dropped or my guisarme? I was supposed to be using my guisarme during this fight, but I guess it doesn't matter too much. Draw my remaining weapon while closing and continue attacking. Leopold as well.

If Erithmu gets the chance - might be good to get a spiritual weapon up - but we'll see if that's needed in a minute.
Vathelokai

03-02-07, 12:55 AM
My bad: You did have the guisarme and it is on the ground...

Erithmu jumps back and draws a wand of healing. It glows with warm light as it causes his ribs to stitch back together. Bulgar pulls out his axe and heads for the treacherous woman. Leopold runs past to Erithmu's side, snapping at the woman, but proving a poor distractions. The druid steps up to the cleric and lunges for his wand, but the adrenaline filled elf refuses to let go of it.
Heal for 7 hp, Leopold AoO fails, Druid flurry disarms for the wand, but fails both.

The cleric takes another step back and heals again, but not quite as powerfully. Leopold trys to get in between them, but the amazingly nimble druid moves around, trying again for the wand and failing. Bulgar charges in, but his axe bites the dirt.
Bulgar charge attack misses, Erithmu heals for 3 hp, All AoOs miss , but druid fails again to flurry disarm the wand.

Bulgar pauses, reajusting his aim against the distracted druid. Just as she makes one more lunge at Eritmu, Bulgar brings the axe through like it's a sport. The blow nearly rends the woman in half.
Bulgar crit for x3 with dwarven war axe for 17 damage. Woman falls.

Everyone stares quietly at the woman laying on the ground. It takes a moment to put their finger on it. She's still breathing. There is no blood comming from her wounds at all. Not wanting to fool around Bulgar kicks her over onto her back to deal another death blow, but as they do they get a look at her face.

Her skin has turned a transluscent grey. The head seems to be larger as well as the eyes, but the mouth and nose have shrunk to minimal proportions. Her clothes seem to be absorbing into her skin.

No one made the know rolls for it, but congrats on defeating the doppleganger monk. Stats and such in the first post.
Erithmu

03-02-07, 01:38 AM
Troublesome .... We should quickly bandage and get to the dragon before our defenses wear out.

Erithmu uses his wand as needed and then applies his pearl to the energy resistance spell that he spent earlier, in case it's magic should run out.

Heal to full anyone wounded, then recall Resist energy.

Indeed - let's make haste! Come Leopold.

Bulgar retrieves his guisarme after stowing away his waraxe.

Hrmmm... that wouldn't be fun. I put some thought into it at work and I'll make a roll to see how much is remaining when you encounter it. Team dragon did specificly plan to try to get you to waste your buffs, so it would be unfair the other way to ignore that... lets see...

Round 40 (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=1069) - Bulgar has 30 rounds (3 minutes) of resist acid left when Leopold barks upon seeing something. Fight or flight?
Erithmu

03-03-07, 09:49 AM
I think we got it ... I have 90% of my spells, and a bonus resist if you want the extra coverage.

If Telin is in, slap Bulls Str on Bulgar, and then bless all of us on sight of the dragon.
TelinArtho

03-03-07, 11:12 AM
4 minutes is plenty.

I'll start with Enlarge Person (2 minutes) and Protection from Evil. Guisarme will be in hand (so shield is not equipped) and Leopold is commanded to heel.
Erithmu

03-03-07, 11:20 AM
I'll buff the party w/ bless then as well, then draw bow and go for a taunting, w/ arrows. And keep Bulgar between me and the dragon and a nice distance apart so we both don't get acid on us.
Vathelokai

03-03-07, 02:17 PM
Suprise Round
The second Leopold begins barking, the elf and dwarf spring into action.
Bulgar casts enlarge person and calls Leopold to his side while he draws his polearm.
Erithmu casts bull strength on Bulgar then moves away from him so they are not a breath weapon target. He draws his bow.
Using pitlord perogative to allow a full round instead of a standard suprise action.

Bulgar [36/36 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [enlarge ends 19] [bulls str ends 39]
Leopold [13/13 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [Heel]
Dragon [68/68 hp]
Erithmu [24/24 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 49]

Round 1
Bulgar casts protection from evil on himself and waits.
Leopold waits.
The dragon, knowing his cover is blown, flies up out of the water. He makes a pass high over Bulgar's head, strafing him with acid breath. The dwarf's magic protects against most, but he stilll takes 3 damage. The dragon was too high to get Leopold. The dragon keeps moving out of melee range.
Erithmu casts bless on the party, moves a bit more and nocks an arrow and calling the dragon names.

Bulgar [33/36 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [enlarge ends 20] [bulls str ends 40] [prot evil ends 21] [bless ends 41]
Leopold [13/13 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [bless ends 41] [Heel]
Dragon [68/68 hp] [Fly 35 ft] [breathweapon on rnd 6]
Erithmu [24/24 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 49] [bless ends 41]

Round 2
Bulgar ???
Leopold waits.
The dragon reaches into a belt that has a few items and finds a wand. It curves it's flight path, passing over Erithmu. As he does, he fires a rainbow of light out of the wand. The elf's jaw drops, as well as his bow, and he can see nothing but sparkly lights. Auto identify as color spray. Rolled a 1 on the save.
Erithmu stares, dumbfounded by the pretty colors.

Bulgar [33/36 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [enlarge ends 20] [bulls str ends 40] [prot evil ends 21] [bless ends 41]
Leopold [13/13 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [bless ends 41] [Heel]
Dragon [68/68 hp] [Fly 35 ft] [breathweapon on rnd 6]
Erithmu [24/24 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 49] [bless ends 41] [stun ends 6]

The dragon circles back around over the water. "Just you and me now, Stronghammer! You got lucky, killing my bodyguard, but this is over. The Order will reward me well when I bring back the head of a Stronghammer!"

TelinArtho

03-03-07, 10:24 PM
Just doing some rough estimate - if I move to (17,17), I figured out the distance as 14.69 5ft squares (~75ft). Assuming that is correct, Bulgar will move to that location and ready to throw a tanglefoot bag once the dragon is above land assuming the dragon is within 80ft when he reaches land.

For the moment, Leopold will shadow my moves until the defend trick can kick in when the dragon is on the ground... which should be soon :)

You'll get no such satisfaction dragon spawn. The Stronghammer clan is stronger than any single one of you - and we have proven that time and again.

Now, if you are done with this banter - come get some.
Vathelokai

Round 2
Bulgar moves closer to the water and readies to throw a tanglefoot bag.
Leopold follows.
The dragon reaches into a belt that has a few items and finds a wand. It curves it's flight path, passing over Erithmu. As he does, he fires a rainbow of light out of the wand. The elf's jaw drops, as well as his bow, and he can see nothing but sparkely lights. Auto identify as color spray. Rolled a 1 on the save.
Erithmu stares, dumbfounded by the pretty colors.

Bulgar [33/36 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [enlarge ends 20] [bulls str ends 40] [prot evil ends 21] [bless ends 41]
Leopold [13/13 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [bless ends 41] [Heel]
Dragon [68/68 hp] [Fly 35 ft] [breathweapon on rnd 6]
Erithmu [24/24 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 49] [bless ends 41] [stun ends 6]

Round 3
Bulgar waits.
The dragon flies to a spot above the ground
Bulgar throws his tanglefoot bag. It splatters the dragons wings, but somehow the dragon floats slowly to the ground.
Leopold growls.
The dragon lands cleanly and moves straight for Bulgar.
Bulgar tries to strike it, but the wyrm dodges left and right, and jumps in under the polearm.

Bulgar [33/36 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [enlarge ends 20] [bulls str ends 40] [prot evil ends 21] [bless ends 41]

TelinArtho

03-04-07, 03:33 PM
I didn't say this before, but my intent is to use any and all AoO for Trips if possible. If I can't roll back that previous one - that's fine - but bear it in mind for the future.

My action now depends on where the dragon is exactly. If I am based, I will execute a trip with my foot and if it succeeds, follow up with an attack from my armor spikes and then a 5ft step back. If I am not based, but he is within 20ft from me, trip with the guisarme (5ft step back first), and followup with the guisarme.

Also it occurs to me that my round 2 action took into account the dragon's movement AFTER his action - meaning I probably wouldn't have moved to 17,17, and would've just thrown the tanglefoot bag, rather than readied... oh well.

Your quarry is not the dog, dragon. Come here and fight for your supper!

Looking at the rolls - didn't the dragon fail the reflex save - shouldn't he have fallen to the ground - unceremoniously hard? Just checking.
Erithmu

03-04-07, 03:48 PM
I'd put money on a ring of feather fall.

Rith's round 6 action: Spiritual Weapon on the Dragon.
Vathelokai

03-04-07, 04:16 PM
Yup, ring of featherfall.

Re-did the AoO as a atrip; dragon is now prone 10 ft from you. Unless I hear otherwise, I'll continue beating him while he's down.

Working on this while the familiy is napping. With any luck, I can get it to round 7 before anyone wakes up...

Round 4
Bulgar slams it again for another 12 damage.
The dragon gets up, dodging more stabs from Bulgar, lunges forward to base and tries to bite Leopold, but misses. "My quarry is your suffering!
Leopold bites back, but also misses.

Bulgar [33/36 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [enlarge ends 20] [bulls str ends 40] [prot evil ends 21] [bless ends 41]

Dragon [44/68 hp] [breathweapon on rnd 6] [entangle ends 9]
Erithmu [24/24 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 49] [bless ends 41] [stun ends 6]

Round 5
Bulgar kicks the dragon over, then brings down a spiked elbow on the dragon for 9 damage. Then he takes a step back.
The dragon gets up, but at the cost of 15 damage. It steps forward and gives Bulgar everything it has. Only one wing swipe gets through, for 4 damage.
Leopold jumps on the distracted dragon and bites for 7 damage.

Bulgar [33/36 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [enlarge ends 20] [bulls str ends 40] [prot evil ends 21] [bless ends 41]
Leopold [13/13 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [bless ends 41] [Heel]
Dragon [13/68 hp] [breathweapon on rnd 6] [entangle ends 9]
Erithmu [24/24 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 49] [bless ends 41] [stun ends 6]

Round 6
Bulgar kicks the dragon over again, then brings down a spiked elbow on the dragon for 10 damage. Then he takes a step back.
The dragon gets up and Bulgar gets down! With another finishing crit manouver, he brings the dragon to -31 damage.
Leopold jumps for joy.
Erithmu suddenly becomes mobile agian.

Bulgar [33/36 hp] [resist acid 10 ends 29] [enlarge ends 20] [bulls str ends 40] [prot evil ends 21] [bless ends 41]

Well I hope you enjoyed the show... didn't expect you to just sit there like a lump though...

I'm just kidding - its rough to be subjected to a spell like that and fail to resist against it. My cousin once fell to a rather nasty wizard's pretidigitation...

Bulgar jokes around as he helps Erithmu pick up his bow and take a look over the dragon's fallen form. Leopold nudges him quietly and Bulgar turns his attention to his faithful friend.

Yes, you did well my fair friend. Just about time to go home I think. Yes, home sounds like a good idea...

Timely crit - that is for sure... Thanks for the run. I really wasn't expecting the feather fall - a nasty thing when you are expecting your opponent to drop like a rock... Looks like I get to look forward to the next quest. It will be a while with my planned absense. I'll also need to level up to ECL5 before I go. If Erithmu can wait - great - but no biggie if he doesn't. Bulgar is through his "trial" levels. With level 2 cleric spells, his versatility opens up and he gets to boost his durations to a reasonable time frame.

For the record - dragon #3 is a tough hurdle to overcome: a very young Red Dragon - the first large dragon on my list.

Alright - have fun guys.
TelinArtho

Just looked over some of the rolls and I noticed something - just to set my mind at ease:

The damage dice for Bulgar were not for his enlarged size. So in all likelihood, the dragon was dead before the crit even landed...
