With a long family history of dragon-slayers when the time called for them, the Stronghammer clan has never stepped down from a challenge. That being said, many of the Stronghammer clan have been doomed to very short lifespans as a result of their quests. Bulgar is a devout follower of Grantis - the dwarven god of Justice and Retribution. Although just an initiate, he is a bright student of the clerical arts and is an accomplished healer. As all members of the Stronghammer clan, he's received martial training in order to prepare him for the trials ahead. Bulgar is one of 6 siblings who are making their way out of the dwarven lands of their birth - ready to prove themselves or ready to move on with their lives. Bulgar has taken it as his personal responsibility to take care of the dragon that felled his cousin Daeren and to restore Daeren's remains to their family tomb. About Grantis, Dwarven god of Justice and Retribution Grantis is a Lawful Neutral god among the dwarves for the most part, although in recent ages, some humans have come to follow his guidelines quite closely. The clerics of Grantis preside over judgements no matter how small or big within the dwarven community, including handing out decisions and executions. Followers of Grantis are allowed to express themselves in their dress, with their holy symbol emblazoned very prominently. Grantis's holy symbol is that of a hammer on both sides of a scale. Followers of Grantis are rarely seen outside of the Dwarven communities. The rare few who become travelers, mostly do so for a temporary pilgrimage or to communicate with other temples to Grantis throughout the world. The vast majority however, tend to stay in their homeland. Grantis's favored weapon is a warhammer. Clerics of Grantis may choose from the following domains: Protection, Strength, Law, Earth Buffs and Prefight actions: Bring Leopold and command him to Heel. Do not equip shield by default. Cast Endure Elements on Self (lasts 24 hours) Bulgar and Leopold are two bricks out of the same barrel - they pride on being able to drive someone to the ground and forcing them to submit to their punishment. As such, Bulgar usually starts battle with a bola in one hand and carrying his Guisarme. Once in range (even maximum range), Bulgar will try to throw the bolas to trip his opponent while Leopold moves up to keep the opponent on the ground. Bulgar is too slow to close to melee on his own usually - so he lets Leopold keep the opponent cornered. Against a faster opponent - particularly horsemen, Bulgar throws the bolas to trip the horse. Once he runs out of them however or if the opponent stays out of range, he will break down and use his bow instead. Bulgar carries the waraxe and shield of his own make - but rarely uses them - as he prefers the guisarme in most circumstances. 3200xp to start xp from fights (fights) xp from quests (quests) |

This extra damage is 1d6 and is not multipled by critical hits. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet. A rogue can sneak attack only living creatures with discernible anatomies—undead, constructs, oozes, plants, and incorporeal creatures lack vital areas to attack. Any creature that is immune to critical hits is not vulnerable to sneak attacks. The rogue must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment or striking the limbs of a creature whose vitals are beyond reach. Trapfinding: Rogues (and only rogues) can use the Search skill to locate traps when the task has a Difficulty Class higher than 20. Evasion (Ex): If Jade makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, she instead takes no damage. Utilize readied actions to disrupt casting against spell-casters. Engage in range with cover over toe to toe fighting. Never surrender. Despite her rather specific monikier, Jade was raised at sea, the adopted daughter of an aging pirate captain named Fenix. The deck her playground, the pirates and their slaves her playmates and the looted bounty of hundreds of ships her toys, treated as practically a princess to the normally rough and nasty lot that sailed under her father. But even a princess pulls bail water and scrubs the decks with everyone else at sea, every hand is needed to be always moving to keep disaster a little further at bay than it would be otherwise. In this way, her blossoming curisioty and information about the world was surpassed by the constant labor, giving her a lean and hardy body too put any 'land wench' to shame. Still, with every port they sailed through, she never did see anyone that looked close to her own appearance. Not even the second mate knew where Fenix had found her or why he had chosen to adopt her and his own words on the matter were infuriatingly simple minded, "Where? I don't right remember, just that I fell in love with you as soon as I saw you dear." The further depths of her past and homeland are closed to her... but home itself is where her heart is; Fenix's long run of pirating came aground in Port Krios when his second mate decided to buy his own ship and start smuggling. A in-port contact can make alot of money helping good smugglers. And so Fenix the Pirate became Fenix the importer and exporter, complete with a fierce daughter who was far too mannish to pose a serious threat to the nebulous though-it-may-be social situation amongst the port teen-agers. Such antics seemed profoundly stupid to Jade in any case, so with the freedom of the sea barred to her; "Far too rough of a life for a lass like you anyways. You cant say it isn't more comfortable in port, hey dear?" ; having the run of the town, public and private would have to be good enough for her. It took her several years, but tricks and techniques of how to slip in and out of all sorts of urban locations amused Jade well enough. | TelinArtho11-30-06, 10:59 AM | Come now Leopold, there's no need to be slinking about back there. What will this Jade character think of you if you are hiding in the back like that? Bulgar Stronghammer strode through the streets of Gladius, a sheet of parchment in his hands. On it was the address of one who had accepted an invitation of his to join him on a dragon hunt. It was early morning yet, but the city was ever abustle with activity, but the dwarf had no problem making his way through the crowds. All at once, as he neared the docks, the throngs cleared out. Leopold, his faithful bloodhound/pittbull mix dog came to his side, wagging his tail. Bulgar patted him softly on the head, got his bearings, and then set out to find the tavern at which the two had agreed to meet. Along the way, an urchin asked if there was anything he needed, so the kindly dwarf threw him a couple of coppers to make sure all was ready at the tavern and that perhaps his future adventuring companion would be there waiting. And to get him a mug of ale ready... |
| Gonbow11-30-06, 05:50 PM | The tavern in question is not far away as this is the Docks, so the urchin happily skips ahead of the generous dwarf, disappearing around a corner without further adieu. It takes Bulgar and Leopold several more moments to make the journey, but the place is marked not only by a freshly painted sign of a busty mermaid, but also by the urchin, peering through the crowds for the dwarf and giving him a wave before moving inside. "Ah, he's here then? Heres a copper, be off with you 'n get a proper haircut. Never know when you'll have enough to git another, ya hear?" This voice comes from the depths of the tavern, sending the urchin off through the door again before Bulgar even reaches it. Sounded human, though male or female was hard to say. The inside of the building is sparsely populated, most of the faces inside belonging to weathered old seadogs, with a few younger sailors here and there in clumps, having a light breakfast from the looks of things, instead of the hearty quaffing likely practiced later in the day and evening. Standing out by way of equipmnet more than appearance, a weathered human female is standing next to a table that has a backpack, sheathed greatsword, longbow and two mugs of ale resting atop it. Raising a calloused hand once she can see Bulgar, Jade hails him. "Aye, there you be then. Lad said you wanted some ale, Bulgar, aye?" |
| TelinArtho12-01-06, 09:27 AM | Well met, well met - and thanks for holding on to this. Bulgar seats himself across from the sea-weathered woman and downs the ale before him. No need to be getting too sauced up this early - but this is surely going to be interesting. As you can tell from my petition - I'm following in the footsteps of the once-great dragon hunter Daeren Stronghammer. He has left a considerable legacy, and it is up to me to continue that tradition in our family name. Here's what I've got for information so far. The dragon we're hunting the next few weeks is... Bulgar divulges the details he has gathered in a sea of excitement. Jade can see that dragon hunting is a matter of great pride for this young dwarf (older than most humans already...), and a slight and faded scar from a dragon's talon adorns Bulgar's neck. Okay Vath - what details does Bulgar have so far? |
| Vathelokai12-02-06, 12:57 PM | Bulgar pulls out maps, notes, baubels, scraps and begins to tell his information in a seemingly haphazard manner. In truth it is a very linear and planned speach that builds on itself in a predictibly dwarven manner. Bulgar dosn't really look at his props; they are more to jog his memory and inform Jade. She, not having an understanding of dwarven grammer, simply listens to all the disperate details and puts them together. Laying out a hand copied map of the continent, he begins. "See these Xs here. These are dragon sightings. Seeing any kind of pattern? You know much about dragons? Well, they believe they are the superior form of life; natural rulers of their domains; claim they were created to the different elements to rule each of those lands. Even the nice ones believe that. Yeah, there's some nice ones. My cousin traveled with one. "Now over here, the sigtings are steady; The dragons are known to roost there and don't expand. But over here they are moving. Mostly the younger ones are moving away from their lands and encroaching on 'two legger' land, as they call it. "I talked to a man who was a slave to a black. The black was killed and his treasure returned to the locals. The man told me that he overheard the dragon talking to himself alone, but after his liberation he talked to a wizard. There was an orb, marked with a multicolored dragon paw in there and the wizard said it could be used to talk to others at a distance. "Now up in this region is the most activity. The ice dragons are spreading out. They hold this mountain range here, but the villages along this coast are saying that there have been more sightings of young Whites. The guess is that either they had a prolific decade and there are more around, or they are pushing their children out as an advanced front. Look at the map; see how the sightings are in a line, how they're moving more toward the west coast than just out from the mountains? "Now this one right here, the closest to the coast; that's our destination. If the dragon were to take these villages, the mainland near the mountain would be cut from their port. The elder here, Kalma, is a proud man. He won't ask for help, but if help arrives he will be generous. "The young white is a smarter one, a potential leader if it grows bigger. Sneaky little lizard too. He's been sighted in the village, somehow getting past guards and such before being found spying. Then it flees. They've followed; the dragon dosn't go too far before roosting in a rocky region. "Now, lad, you still interested? Good." They call for more drinks and Jade impresses the dwarf with her quick recall and understanding of the broad and specific situations. They talk for a while until high tide approaches and the call for the leaving ship comes. * * * The ship ride takes a over a fortnight. As they progress the weather gets colder and the days get shorter. On the trip the duo discusses the situation further. Realizing that Jade knows little to nothing about dragons Bulgar instructs her in the basics; speed, breathweapons, strategies, defenses. They practice on the ship, forming a team bond so that they react better in battle. They arrive to an overcast an none too busy port. The ground is covered in dirty snow and smoke clouds rise from every other building. They quickly hire a dog sled to carry them to Kalma's village. The village is composed of sod covered longhouses. They are led to the largest building in the village, the only one with a smoke trail. The inside is a completely open room. The floor is covered with fur and woven rugs. There is a fire pit in the center and smoke clouds around the arched roof above. Dozens of villagers are there in the common lodge. They introduced to the elder man closest to the fire. He's short and stocky, showing a hint of dwarven ancestry. After their introduction to Kalma, they have a meal and the talking begins. "Thanks to you for being most wonderfull visitors. Your tales are fascinating to this local community in our time of preparing for the cold dark season." His accent is thick, but he speaks slow and deliberately. "You have asked of us about the dragons we have seen. You have shown us the scars given to you by dead dragons. We offer you shelter in return to your honor. "Near to us, just past a day walk, there is a dragon of snow. It has been watching us. It has camped on our roof to hear our tales. It homes in a nearby depression. The ground is weak there, with crevases that eat men. The snow is becoming hard in the cold dark season. The place is easier to travel now. "If you go there you must be careful. And watch out for the ice sloughs. They are like you call ditches, drag trails in the ice. They are the footprints of the remorhaz. Do not linger near the sloughs." Last good nights sleep before the trek. You can buy/barter for basic equipment or some npc services here. A guide would cost extra (based on chr skill check). |
| Gonbow12-03-06, 02:42 PM | "Lass, aye." Jade gently corrects the eager dwarf before they set out, smiling gently all the same. During what time they do not spend engaged in planning or practicing on the trip, Jade lends a hand to the actual sailing of the ship, fetching this or that for the laboring sailors without being asked, blithely ignoring the suspicious squints this elicits. As they near port, she changes clothing, opting for more cold-weather ready garb. Once they arrive at the village, she listens attentively to the elder's words, nodding her and then but keeping any questions she might have until he is finished with his tale. "Thank you for your advice, we shall heed it truly. When was this snow dragon first noticed skulking about, if I may ask?" After her question and any Bulgar may have are answered, she ventures among the folk of the village, seeking to purchase a hunting net, explaining in brief her and the dwarf's task should the question arise of why she would want such a thing. OOC: A guide would probably be a good idea, but not one that'll occur to Jade. So I'll just be buying a net. Should be useful in containing the dragon's mobility. |
| Vathelokai12-03-06, 02:48 PM | "The snow dragon was first seen by us one year ago. In the recent time, one season, 4 months, was when we saw it in the village. We have seen it 2 more times on our roofs since then." No problem buying a sturdy net from these guys. |
| Vathelokai12-03-06, 06:03 PM | Jade has a prison violation (none bad; some benifical). If you want, you can fix the problems before the fights start, and I will recopy your character sheet, though it's not really nessicary. |
| TelinArtho12-04-06, 11:18 AM | Thank ye much for yer hospitality. We would greatly appreciate any information about the place ye can give, and a guide would be most useful - as long as he stays out of t'way. Bulgar enjoys the food, because as his father always used to say - Ye nevar know when t'wyrm is goin'ta find ya in her belly. He is polite in company however, and keeps several of the younger present entertained with his stories told to him by past generations. Let us set out as soon as we can in the morning - pre-dawn if possible. Yes, a guide would be nice. Also, note that Bulgar has prebuffed endure elements. Since Jade bought a scroll for me to cast, I'll assume she wants it cast as well. Also - she should probably give Bulgar the scrolls of Resist Energy to be cast later if that's the intention. Leopold has ample cold-weather clothing for the trip. Let's get going - before it gets too cold |
| Gonbow12-04-06, 02:52 PM | Jade certainly does not skimp on the food either, but is more reserved, watching the villagers and Bulgar quietly until the meal is finished, then moving to retire in whatever corner is available for a reasonable price. "That'll be fine, I am used to venturing out at all hours, if you have not risen before me, I'll rouse you." Jade agrees, pausing for a second then unslinging her pack for a moment and digging through for something. "Though, I have a favor to ask, if you would. I bought a incantation to ward against the environs and another to ward off the dragon's breath, but I confess to not have the experience with them to use them yet, I don't suppose you do?" She asks, handing the tube with the two scrolls in them to Bulgar. OOC: Sheet updated; I noticed the violation, but wasn't sure if I'd get a chance to update my stuff until the quest was over. Jade will leave some rations behind with the elder to make room encumberance wise for the net. |
| Vathelokai12-04-06, 08:44 PM | Kalma graciously allows to the pair to store what they don't wish to carry, promising on his honor it will be there when they return. They inquire of the chieftan if someone could work as a guide. "Not many know the path out there, and the ones that know would not walk it. They require a mighty protection of ancestor spirits. If you humble yourself to the ancestors and they give their blessing then there may be a warrior brave enough to guide you." Kalma and Bulgar begin discussing the finer details while Jade goes to find a net. Basicly the ceremony would require an outrageous fee of 5 gp (outrageous considering that it would usually cost 2 sp; those rolls were awful). I asume you still want the guide; I'm just double checking. Either way, it won't change this next bit here... * * * The crew marches slowly across the ice covered tundra. There are low hills and mountains in the horizon. Occasionally sprouts of hybrinating brown plants poke through. Some time after the middle of the incredibly short day they are startled by a sight to the south of them. A pillar of steam errupts from seemingly nowhere a little over 200 ft away. You only see steam at this point. |
| TelinArtho12-05-06, 09:27 AM | I'll cover the cost of the guide. At the sight of the steam, Bulgar turns to the guide with them. What do you make of that there? Instinctively at the sound, Bulgar's hands tightened around the shaft of his guisarme. He calms the low rumble in Leopold's throat by patting him a few times on the head. Calm yourself boy - there'll be time for that soon enough. Is there any place to gain a better vantage point on the source of the steam without revealing ourselves too much? |
| Gonbow12-05-06, 05:26 PM | "Dunnae look natural to me." Jade murmurs under her breath, shifting from foot to foot and peering suspiciously in the direct of the plume of rising evaporating water. "I've heard of some stuff called dry ice... don' suppose ya'll have cold steam up here then, eh?" She continues rather rhetorically, wrapping one hand around the shaft of her bow while waiting for the native to reply. |
| Vathelokai12-05-06, 11:18 PM | The guide motions them to a ridge nearby and they all swiftly move to the side blocking the view from the pillar. The guide inches up to the top of the hill and watches for a couple seconds before spining around and sliding down to where the party his waiting. "I can't see what it is for the steam around it. It's so hot it's melting the ice it stands on. I have no idea what could do that, but it looks like it's moving this way." Looking up they see that the pillar seems to be a little closer. Neither Bulger nor the guide made the knowledge: arcana check to identify. No one has succeeded on a spot check to see what's in the concealment of the steam. LoS is blocked by the ridge (10 ft higher than you at the top). Steam has moved 60 ft closer; now 170 ft from you. Initiative has not been rolled yet. |
| Gonbow12-05-06, 11:54 PM | Jade considers this, looking at the plume of steam steadily growing closer, unslinging her bow completely and pushing herself up the ridge of ice as the guide did before her, "Ain' gonna be pleasant being up close 'n personal with it, best withdraw you two. I'll try'n figure if its hostile or not. If I come a runnin', give me covering fire, aye Bulgar?" She says swiftly, getting down on all fours as she approaches the crest of the ridge, to be able to peek over the tip with as much concealment as possible. |
| Vathelokai12-06-06, 08:26 AM | Jade inches to the top and peaks over. She sees a bit of color in the cloud at the bottom. The moving creature seems to be leaving as trail of steam behind it. As it pulls away from the trail Jade sees that it looks like a large blue insect. It has a long red streak of glowing red down the center of it's back that drips down to it's claws. Jade guesses that it's pretty small, probably not any bigger than Leopold. Looking behind it, Jade sees that it is leaving a trail behind of melted snow that is quickly refreazing. She remembers the elders warning about the monster that digs ditches... http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/Vathelokai/Remorhaz.jpg Okay, it's not a full blown remorhaz; Just keeping things interesting. It's a baby remorhaz! Pretty similar but not quite identical abilities. Since nobody made the know check, I'll post it's stuff after the fight. |
| TelinArtho12-06-06, 11:35 AM | Well, there's no chance to avoid it now, I guess we'll just have to see whether it will pass us by or if we need to take care of it on our own. Leopold - guard! Blugar points to a spot 5ft to his left and the faithful bloodhound stands protectively in that spot - waiting for the beast to come within reach. Blugar holds his guisarme in both hands, prepared as well. Can I get a size on this thing? Large? Medium? Small? If it is medium or smaller, Bulgar will attack to trip (or ready to attack to trip if it is too far away on his initiative). If it is large, he will just attack. In both cases, he'll use combat expertise to add 2 to his AC and subtract 2 from his to-hit (20 AC, +3 melee with the guisarme (+6 trip check)). Leopold will attack if it gets within his reach - readied. |
| Gonbow12-06-06, 01:01 PM | "If its metling ice with but a passing moment, I'd suggest ya nae let em try and bite the thing... he's a precious one, wouldn't want to see em go down when he didn't have to." Jade suggests over her shoulder, sighing afterwards as she slides down, holstering the bow as her earlier tactical plan is apparently discarded by the stationary dwarf and unsheathing her greatsword. To the guide she notes, "If it does come to blows, stay behind us, I'll try to make sure it cant get at you." Just common sense here, much as Jade isn't going to try and net the thing no matter what it's size is and would have prefered to go range, I highly suggest /not/ letting leopold try and bite it. We are out of the nimbus, after all. And we still have to get to the dragon... killing it without going to melee would have been better, so we can conserve any healing/etc. Anyways, Jade will maneuver herself so she's between the guide and the target, then ready to swat it away with her greatsword if it comes within her reach. If Bulgar and Leopold are slightly to one side and behind her and the guide directly behind it, it would be perfect as the reach areas will overlap and it cant get to anyone without taking at least two attacks. |
| TelinArtho12-06-06, 01:05 PM | Ranged is fine - please do go there. The dwarf is merely the first line of offense it will need to pass through - and Leopold would be with him as part of that wall. Well noted on Leopold backing off if he gets hurt though. My plan is to let you fire at it while it closes and Bulgar will keep it at bay while you either a) plink it with arrows or b) switch to your greatsword. Since I have a reach weapon - you wouldn't be firing into melee. |
| Vathelokai12-06-06, 01:30 PM | It's a small creature |
| Gonbow12-07-06, 08:32 PM | OOC: So... I'm guessing we're ready for combat when you are Vath. I've already posted ICly breaking off the ranged bit, so no point in retconning it, far as I can see. We should try and get this moving, as we are in week 2 and haven't cleared the first encounter yet. If it would help, I could do a tactical post vis a vis arena tactics so you don't have to wait for us to respond every round? |
| Vathelokai12-07-06, 10:26 PM | Sorry for all this drag. I rolled the entire encounter; you guys won. Just got home from a crazy day. I'm writing it up now. |
| Vathelokai12-08-06, 01:23 AM | rolls (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=864) Jade steps to the top of the ridge and begins firing arrows as fast as her frozen hands can manage. Half of them go long, but the ones that do not burst into flames as the slam into the fiery insect. Taking that as a bad sign, she steps back as she continues firing. As the monster comes over the top of the ridge, it immediately gets a hit in the legs from Bulgar's polearm. The first swing misses, but a second round puts the pole between it's dozens of legs. The monster seems not to notice as it begins crawling up the polearm and snapping it's mandibles at the dwarf. Everyone begins to feel the intense heat of the creature as the hard packed snow beneath them begins to turn to mud. Leopold looks desperately for a way to interfear with the monster, but is unable to get close enough to bite because of the intense heat. Bulgar takes a step back and swings at it's legs, but it continues to dance around the polearm. While there is a clear shot, Jade fires, but the arrows continue to hit the monster and burn, falling to the ground in scorched heaps. The heat begins to get to her and as she nearly faints she is forced back from the creature a number of paces. The circular pattern continues as Bulgar continues forcing the monster away by wedging the polearm beneath it, and Jade fires arrows repeatedly. Combined with the exertion, the heat begins to wear on the dwarf as well. Distracted by the sweat in his eyes, the insect lunges beneath Bulgar's weapon slaming hard into his stomach. Bulgar doubles over and stumbles back. His winter coat has a smouldering patch in the center, but thankfully it's not on fire. Between the arrows, the infuriated Dwarf makes a sweaping overhead swing, snapping the legs of the creature. It falls to the ground in a hissing steam pool and Bulgar raises the polearm high and brings it down into the center of it's carapace. The insect squeels and jerks and then becomes still. The air tempeture begins to reduce in the northern wind. Bulgar yanks his weapon out of the bug and his stomach sinks. The melted slag of the head seperates from the haft and remains in the carapace. Seemingly unaware, the guide immediately falls to the mud and begins to thanks his ancestor spirits for trusting these two mighty warriors. Dice gods hate you... Bulgar d20: 18 rolls, 9.3 average d4: 2 rolls, 2 average Jade d20: 21 rolls, 8.9 average d8: 3 rolls, 5 average Remorhaz d20: 12 rolls, 13.1 average d6: 2 rolls, 3.5 average d3: 2 rolls, 1.5 average Explaination: I used the entire statblock for a magmin, since they are quite similar in ability to the remorhaz (without that swollow whole thing). |
| TelinArtho12-08-06, 04:46 PM | Well, I've been away myself for the last day and a half due to missing internet. Anyway - did I read right - Bulgar loses the head of his Guisarme? That could really suck... Regrouping, Bulgar inspects the polearm in hand. I guess I should've brought two of them... How are the rest of you? Bulgar makes sure everyone is okay before he pulls a wand out and touches it to his stomach. As it eases his pain, he prays to Grantis in thanks for showing his blade true. Unstrapping the axe at his side and the shield on his back, he smiles. Okay - let's see if I can manage to keep a good condition on this one eh? At the moment, he'll just equip his shield and his axe is ready to be drawn. I have to keep the hand free in case he needs to cast something. Use Wand of Cure Light Wounds to heal everyone up to full. |
| Vathelokai12-08-06, 06:46 PM | Yup. Guisarme rolled badly (the magmin rules for melting weapons are wonky). It melted right after you killed it. Anything else before moving on? |
| Vathelokai12-09-06, 12:00 AM | Jade and Bulgar begin to adjust their packs to go when the guide interupts. "We cannot just leave the beasts body here. Please, give me a few moments and I can take the carapace. I will carry it, it will not slow us down." Deciding that a break isn't such a bad idea, they allow it. Jade and Leopold keep watch on the ridge while the guide cleans the kill. Bulgar spends the time trying to put his guisarme back together, but it's unsalvageable. A bit later they start walking, wanting to put some range between the carrion and the wild animals before they set up camp. After nightfall they find a good spot and the guide pulls a carapace smelling 2 man tent from his bag. They huddle in for the night, warm enough but unable to get more than an hour of sleep in any give stretch. They pack back up before dawn and continue toward the mountains. They walk in pale dawn for hours before the full sun hits the sky. The hills get steeper as they reach the base of the mountain. The guide calls a stop at a high point. "There is the place." He points to uncountable long dark ridges through the ice that lead toward the mountain. "The dragon landed in there. There are small canyons beneath the ice that have frozen over from wind and snowmelt. They are like ice caverns. The darkwinter has not come completely, so the ice is not at it's thickest. It is dangrous to walk there, but that is where the snow dragon lives." General strategy for moving into the area/searching/tracking/waiting/etc.? Almost forgot to mention; your prebuffed endure elements are still going. The night of camping thing was more of an RP thing. Bulgar could still use the haft of the guisarme; improvised weapon doing club damage, still has reach. Or since he has craft weapon, he could give a shot at turning it into a longspear or quarterstaff. 2 CLW charges for Bulgar. 1 charge for Jade. |
| Gonbow12-09-06, 01:28 PM | "Alright, just a bit scorched." Jade reports after the battle is over, peering quizzically at the ruined polearm, "Too bad, looked like a good blade." She says, somewhat consolingly. At least it was the blade and not the dog, eh? Staying quiet for the trek to the area that holds the dragon's lair, Jade gives a brief whistle at the sight of the dangerous terrain, "Ice caverns you say? Hmm. If we had to fight in there, probably wont be able to use my sword or your guisarme all that well anyways, eh Bulgar?" She nods and squats down while surveying the lay of the land, such as it is. "Any idea where it would be most likely to den? The middle, to ensure intruders have to pass through as much as possible to get to it, or the outskirts, for easy entrance and exit?" Well, Jade doesn't have any tracking ability and not much searching ability yet (I'll be taking a level of ranger by ECL 5, so I'll get some eventually, never fear... Searching may just be a matter of going through and putting markers (Chip the ice?) at any intersections we come across to note where we have been (And which branch we took at the intersection). Inefficient and lengthy, but more or less the only option at the moment. Hmm. Maybe we should have tried to get a scent for Leopold from the village, would have been useful if he could ID the dragon scent should he come across it later, but for now we'll just hope he'll alert us to any odd scent as we go along. |
| Vathelokai12-09-06, 02:33 PM | The first step is getting down there. ;) |
| Gonbow12-09-06, 05:35 PM | The first step is getting down there. ;) Huh? Your description wouldn't suggest any difficulty in maneuvering through the terrain, just difficulty in doing so in a straight line. Can you give a more detailed scene pose then? |
| Vathelokai12-09-06, 10:00 PM | Your right; it is much less detailed than the image I had in my head. It is dangrous to walk there, but that is where the snow dragon lives." The ice field in front of them is a nearly solid block leading uphill to the mountains. Directly below where they stand they can see light colored pockets of air frozen into the ice. Long dark streaks lead away beneath the ice, getting darker as they approach the mountain. The guide explains that the canyons are more like trenches here, and completly filled with ice, but closer to the mountain the ice has frozen over the top, leaving open tunnels with rock walls and ice ceilings. From where they are they cannot see into the tunnels below them, but the guide points out some dark patches where the ice looks thinner and there may be away down. Better? It's always hard to tell if I'm being descriptive enough. Basic idea is that there are ice tunnels beneath your area, that you can sort of see through the ice. There may be an enterance around (the dragon has one at least). The guide has a couple ideas, and being a skilled hireling, has a decent idea of how to get there. |
| TelinArtho12-09-06, 10:28 PM | Bulgar has a rope and grappling hook to help. I suggest we tie each other together for any down/up sides and use the dog to lead the way - he's well trained in tracking - so if a scent shows up - he'd be the first to notice it. Come here Leopold. Reaching into the bags on Leopold's back, Bulgar retrieves the tools he's brought for the task ahead - taking out some pitons, a hook and a decent length of rope. I'd suggest order it Leopold, Bulgar, guide, Jade. |
| Gonbow12-11-06, 05:54 PM | Jade contemplates the expanse for a few long moments before nodding to herself and leaving the matter to the guide. Without some quarry specific information to alter their tactics, it is undoubtedly the best she can do. OOC: Sounds good to me. Sorry about not posting before, finals and such (finally done! Yay. But that has it own set of problems..) I'm not going to be able to post after tomorrow, due to a familial request. (More details here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10887022&postcount=95)) |
| Vathelokai12-12-06, 12:54 AM | Tough break, Gonbow. Have fun at least. I ran out the next encounter based on your statements above and common sense (I couldn't imagine it going any other way). The guide saved your butts a couple times. I think I got the climb rules sort of right; solo climbing works with the rules, but team climbing dosn't seem to be covered. Spiked Pit Trap CR 3; mechanical; location trigger; manual reset; DC 20 Reflex save avoids; 20 ft. deep (2d6, fall); multiple targets (first target in each of two adjacent 5-ft. squares); pit spikes (Atk +10 melee, 1d4 spikes per target for 1d4+2 each); Search DC 21; Disable Device DC 20. Market Price: 3,600 gp. The 'spikes' would be all the jagged ice you would fall on/be crushed by. Rolls at the CoCo roller. They don't walk long up the icy hill before Leopold finds a scent. Guessing there wouldn't be too many scents around the lair of an ice dragon, they follow his lead. It's a slow trudge for over an hour. Finally Leopold stops and points. Moving a bit further they see a hole out in the ice. They begin moving futher to investigate when the guide calls to stop. "Don't move. Water is dripping around that hole. It must be thin. You do not want to fall through." Neither Jade or Bulgar sees what's he's talking about but they defer to his judgement. They circle around the hole, keeping a good distance. Bulgar spots a huge rock and they formulate an idea. Using their weapons to chip at the ice around it, they drag the 300 lb rock out of the ice and begin sliding it toward the hole. Once they have a good slide downhill they stop and watch the rock slide and tumble toward the hole. As it approaches the ice begins to crack and give way. The ice shelf on either side of the the hole for 20 feet shatters and falls into the abyss below. The send Leopold out first. The brave dog inches to the edge of the newly formed opening. Peeking over the edge, he growls low but dosn't give any other signal. Bulger begins slowly clomping to the edge. From the edge he can see that there is a 20 ft drop onto the shattered ice. The shelf broke off right to the stone wall holding it up. He tells the others that there is stone below where he's standing and they come out. "I've got a rope and hook." Bulgar pulls the items and some pitons from his pack. As he begins to tie it, Jade interupts him. "I've got a better idea. Let me see it." Jade takes the rope and ties the hook to the center. "We only need 20 ft, so the way I see it, we can use one length to climb down and the other length to tie the climber. You climb much?" Bulgar shakes his head. "Let me go first then. You two hold the tie off rope, and I'll go down and hammer the pitons. That should make it a breeze." Jade has the ropes ready by the time she stops talking. They place the hook near the ledge and hammer it into the ice. Then Jade begins walking backwards over the edge. There is a minute of hammering, then a call and a shifting of rope. Another minute of hammering. More rope. Bulgar and the guides hands begin to burn from holding the rope steady. More hammering. A sudden fling of rope. Jade's foot slips and her hand slides on the rope, the other hand holding the piton hammer. The others slam their feet into the ice and clamp the ropes, bringing her to a sudden stop. One breath later, Jade begins hammering again at her new position. They listen to 3 more pitons being pounded in. The sound brings back memories to Bulgar. As he's remembering the cradle rocking sound of hammered stone, he is wisked away by a sudden pull on the rope that's wraped around his arm. The rope pulls him toward the edge. The guide digs in his heels and brings the dwarf to a stop with his head hanging over the edge. Bulgar smiles at Jade. "You doing well down there?" "Yeah. Slippery. Only 2 more." Jade readjusts herself and begins hammering again. Quickly she finishes the job and steps down onto shattered rubble of the floor. The rope is pulled back up and they truss up Leopold and lower him down to the floor. The guide opts to stay at the top and guard the rope, and Bulgar slowly climbs down the path. Down in the cavern, Leopold still picks up the scent but nothing perilously close. They look around. The ice ceiling is about 15 ft above the slick rock floor. The walls are rough stones half covered in icecicles. Cautiously moving past the zone of collapsed ceiling they find that some of the rock on the floor is exposed and fairly safe to walk on. The tunnel leads off in two directions, but they cannot see further than 50 ft either way before ice columns and the winding path block their sight. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/Vathelokai/CoCo%20Maps/White-Dragon-A.jpg Pretty straight forward: Squares are 5 ft. The walls that are touching ice are ice all the way up to the top. Walls touching rock are rock all the way up. There appears to be T intersections at the top and bottom of the map. Visibility is fine (it's mid day and the light comes through the ice). If you need something clarified, go ahead and ask. No sign of the dragon other than lingering scent. |
| TelinArtho12-12-06, 11:04 AM | It seems we are close enough - time to get ready. Come here Leopold - let's take the sting off of the cold for you. You too Jade. As for you my fair guide - do your best to stay out of sight. If you feel the need - go ahead and retreat a bit and wait for our confirmation of the dragon's defeat. Bulgar takes out the two scrolls from his pack plus the 3rd that Jade had given him and then reads from them - touching Leopold, Jade and his own shoulder in order. May Grantis's might protect us from the icy breath of the dragon's making. Take care - this should only take the edge off - it won't protect you completely. I vote we head to the southern area first - Jade keep your bow ready. He then pulls a heavy bag filled with a soft glue. Here's hoping we get lucky. He says with a smile. |
| TelinArtho12-14-06, 02:12 PM | How are we doing? Did you disappear on me Vath? |
| Vathelokai12-15-06, 12:28 AM | Sorry for the delay. New job and now my weekdays are full and weekends are more open (quite the opposite of my previous one). http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/Vathelokai/CoCo%20Maps/White-Dragon-B.jpg The crew moves carefully from the ice to the stone area then begins walking cautiously south. They reach the T intersection and begin looking both ways to determine the best course, when from nowhere a huge shard of ice flies through the cavern. It slams into Bulgar, but is immediately melted by his protective magic. Jade and Bulgar look at each other for answers, but neither saw where it came from. Taking a defensive stance, they begin scanning every inch of the room. Around the corner to the east they the flick of something white moving quickly before disappearing around the corner. Your initiative. Dragon did a snipe attack with something icy, and rehid (you both rolled awful). You actively spotted and found him, but it won initiative. It moved north out of sight. |
| TelinArtho12-16-06, 10:20 AM | So despite the fact that the squares for Bulgar, Jade, etc are smaller than the squares of the map - the squares of the map are 5ft right? - so Bulgar is ~40ft from where the dragon last was seen? Grantis - protect me from this threat! Bulgar clasps the holy symbol around his neck. He then indicates to Jade to take cover. Leopold instinctively stands between Bulgar and the unknown threat. Do you want me to make actions for Jade as well? If so, she'll declare her dodge and tap her tattoo of Force Screen. Then she'll move to the corner and hide. Bulgar drops his tanglefoot bag, casts Protection from evil from memory, and picks it up again. |
| Vathelokai12-16-06, 11:53 AM | Yes, the map squares are 5 ft; it is the character color squares that are out of proportion. Yes, please do make actions for Jade. I'm writing to the council currently; will do the moves for this as soon as I finish. |
| Vathelokai12-16-06, 01:29 PM | Jade taps her tattoo and moves up to the wall while drawing her bow while Bulgar summons up more protections. Once in position they wait a few moments, but all is silent. Nothing seemed to happen on the Dragon's turn (all parties failed sensing rolls). Should Jade be up and to the right one space, or up 2 and 1 to the right? Your teams initiative (Jade first, then Bulgar and Leopold simultaneously). Dragon [hp ??/??] Jade [hp 21/21] [holding bow] [force screen ends 43] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 230] Bulgar [hp 29/29] [holding tanglebag and shield] [prot. evil ends 43] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 229] Leopold [hp 13/13] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 228] note: using the round number from the roller to keep things straight. *EDIT* please double check my round summary. |
| TelinArtho12-16-06, 02:40 PM | Up and to the right one space for Jade (so she gets "cover" to hide in from both the north and the east sides) Bulgar should be holding his tanglefoot bag and have his shield equipped (AC20). Jade takes up position and moves along the wall to look around the corner. Bulgar moves out into the open, ready to throw his tanglefoot bag on sight of the wily dragon. Leopold shadows his steps. Jade will move along the wall and ready to fire at the corner. Bulgar will move along the back wall (further south while still on rock) and ready to throw the bag on sight and range. The dragon can be as far as 60ft away (-4 penalty maximum is what I'm looking for) for him to throw it. Leopold follows quietly behind him. |
| Vathelokai12-17-06, 12:32 PM | Bulgar and Jade inch along the path. Before they move too far another ice-cicle flies at Leopold, once again shattering against the magical protections. Everyone hears cursing in draconic from around the corner. Bulger moves forward to the where the rock path curves. He spots the fuming dragon clinging to the ceilling a short distance from the icy corner, supernaturally blending into the ice. Suprised by how close it is, Bulgar throws his bag up at a 45 degree angle and it explodes on the small dragon. However the glue dosn't stick to the dripping ice. With a shreik the dragon lets go, twists, and begins a dive at Bulgar. As the dragon rounds the corner, Jade looses an arrow. The dragon weaves around it and keeps flying. Bulgar waits, then brings up his shield at the last second. The dragon's head bounces off the metal plate and it is forced to land in front of Bulgar. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a327/Vathelokai/CoCo%20Maps/White-Dragon-D.jpg Round 36 Jade [hp 21/21] [holding bow] [force screen ends 43] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 230] Bulgar [hp 29/29] [holding shield] [prot. evil ends 43] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 229] Leopold [hp 13/13] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 228] Dragon [hp ??/??] [entangle ends 37] Because of readied actions, it is now your init. It is the begining of round 36. I mention diving charge in the roller; I forgot entangle made it unable to charge. Dosn't change the outcomes though. Remember that Leopold isn't trained to attack non humanoids; it would take a push action to do that. |
| TelinArtho12-18-06, 11:14 AM | I just realized I can't make trip attacks with my waraxe and still get the follow-up attack... darn that remorhaz... Bulgar grins at the dragon before him. It is too bad for you that today is your ending day. In the name of the Stronghammer clan, I strike you down! Bulgar lifts his axe in to his hand and swings it in a deadly arc against the dragon. I'm fully aware that Leopold won't attack without a push. He's mostly around as a character focus and to help out a little in the battles without dragons... If Jade acts after Bulgar but before the dragon goes, Bulgar will take a 5ft step back so that Jade has a clear shot for rapid shot. Otherwise, he will stay based with the dragon and Jade will have to shoot into melee for a bit. I don't want her to close, so that she doesn't have to worry about switching weapons in case the dragon tries to flee. As long as the dragon stays in melee, Bulgar will attack. If it moves away again, I will need to adjust a little probably depending on the situation - in case you wanted to run a few rounds. |
| Vathelokai12-19-06, 01:17 AM | Bulgar pulls out his axe along with his battle cry and swings at the dragon. The white is quick and jumps out of the way. Arrows fly over it's head as it dives bewteen Bulgar's legs. The dwarf brings the axe down on it's tail. It twists underneath him and bites into his thigh while the claws rake agianst his greaves. With a swift kick, Bulgar jumps away from the dragon and brings his axe down again, nicking it's wing. The dragon keeps comming as the arrows bounce off it's hide. Again it tries to climb Bulgar and sinks it's teeth into him while he prys it off with his axe. Backpedaling away, Bulgar takes a massive swing, cleaving deep into it's side. This gives the dragon pause. It spins immediately, and before Bulgar can swing again, it flies down the corridor away from them. Had to draw your axe for that first attack (threw the tangle bag after moving), so you had no chance to move away. Dragon kept moving into your space to full attack; taking the AoOs and banking on it's multiattack, but you got lucky there. None of Jade's arrows hit; not so lucky there. Every round Bulgar steped out of it's space so that it would have to provoke to full attack again. It just withdrew to regroup. It's the begining of 39, and your init. Round 38 Jade [hp 21/21] [holding bow] [force screen ends 43] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 230] Bulgar [hp 17/29] [holding shield and axe] [prot. evil ends 43] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 229] Leopold [hp 13/13] [resist energy (cold 10) ends 228] Dragon [hp -30/??] |
| TelinArtho12-19-06, 10:25 AM | How are you doing there Jade? Bulgar asks as he looks himself over. Knowing the dragon will be back shortly, he puts away his axe as he moves over to Jade. Would you mind covering me whilst I tend to this mess? With that, he produces a wand from his pack and touches it to the most serious of the wounds. Speaking Grantis's name under his breath, many of the wounds close up. There, that's a little better. Put away axe while moving, draw wand of cure light wounds. Apply wand up to two times if needed and time allows. If the dragon is still not back, cast Enlarge Person from memory - then draw another tanglefoot bag. Jade will keep an eye out for the dragon and continue readying to fire until it is found. Leopold will guard as well. |
| Vathelokai12-19-06, 03:43 PM | Bulgar taps the wound on his leg, but barely feels any better. It still hurts when he puts weight on it. He takes a few steps toward Jade, when Leopold begins barking and pointing with a paw to the west. Bulgar puts his wand away and grabs at his axe as he sees the dragon rocket around the corner from the direction they came. Jade fires a shot into it. It keeps flying with the arrow sticking from it's side. The dragon skids to a stop on the wall right above Jade, biting a gash in her shoulder. Stepping back, Jade drop the bow and brings her greatsword from her back and straight down onto the dragon. Bulgar shuffles across the slippery ice to Jades side and begins swinging at the dragon. From it's perch on the wall the dragon continues to bite at Jade, leaving sevral bloody gashes. Jade and Bulgar keep moving from side to side, keeping the dragon from gaining an advantage of location. The blows keep piling up on both sides until Bulgar brings down a perfect slice into the dragon. It's eyes go blury and it tries to back away, but in it's haste to retreat it opens itself to a deadly swing. The body of the dragon goes limp with it's claws still stuck in the ice. It hangs in front of them eiriely as they realize that it is okay to catch their breath. rols (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=864) |
| TelinArtho12-19-06, 04:07 PM | Well, that's the end of that I suppose. Too bad it wasn't going to see the light of another day, I hear tomorrow is always better. Bulgar invites Leopold over and praises him. Such a good boy! Just in time too! Bulgar sets about removing the dragon from the ice and digs out a hollow in the ice below him. As soon as he is done, he places the dragon gingerly inside and covers it up again with the ice he had removed. Finished, he says a quick prayer to Grantis, pats Leopold once more on the head and congratulates Jade on the help. Well, that was fun twasn't? Back to his comfort zone, Bulgar doesn't look back. Bulgar 1, Dragons 0 he thinks to himself as they make their way out of the icy home. |
| Vathelokai12-19-06, 09:48 PM | "Bulgar, I really didn't believe you when you said how fast this dragon would be. And the bigger ones are faster?" As Bulgar finishes the funeral and begins to walk back to the rope, Jade stops him. "Don't you want to take a look around?" "It's not right to loot from the dead." "I didn't mean that. Just a look around." Eventually Bulgar warms up to the idea. They walk along the rock path which goes around in a large circle with the hall with the rope connecting opposite points in the circle. As they pass one wall, Jade notices a scratched up patch of ice where it looks like the dragon had been burrowing. Chiping at it with her spiked gauntlet, the wall gives a tiny hole to cavity behind it. They spend some time picking at it before the hole is large enough to crawl through. Leopold snarls a bit, smelling dragon in the space. "Must be it's nest," Bulgar mutters. Jade climbs in cautiously. It is much darker inside and smaller. Grantis hears a small prayer and Bulgar hands a glowing holy symbol to Jade. Bulgar waits in the larger cavern. A couple minutes later, Jade sticks her head out again. "It's clear, but you need to see this. I don't know what to make of it." "What is it?" "Some kind of altar. Come on." Reluctantly the dwarf climbs up and through the hole. The tunnel is twisting and cramped. Jade has to hunch over but Bulgar can barely walk upright. They pass a couple of nooks and nitches where items stolen from nearby villages are piled up. They find a few animals frozen solid. At the end Jade stops and points. Bulgar inches around her and looks into the rough 10 ft rectangular room. There is a raised platform of ice. It's surrounded by piles of coins and raw ore chunks. At first Bulgar thinks it might be a bed, but on top of the platform is an orb. The dwarf squints. It looks fist sized and clear. Inside is some kind design, like a kids marble. Taking a chance, Bulgar holds up his holy symbol as a light. The design looks like the track of a dragon claw, a flat foot with dots for claw marks just away from the extensions. It is multi hued and changes color in the light like an oil slick. Doing the questlog; should I make all the climb checks to get your pitons back, or do you want to leave them in the wall? |
| TelinArtho12-19-06, 10:01 PM | I treat the items carried on the mule as "quest materials" so yes I will need them back. All of us will climb up then use the rope to get the last person up while they retrieve the pitons. |
