| MitzaVolchenko01-18-06, 05:49 PM | Introduction: As Karen sits in front of the Psi Consortium watching people pass by and contemplating her first defeat, a haggard man in ragged clothing, staggers up to her and collapses to the ground at her feet. "Please tell me that I have reached the Psi Consortium? Please tell me that you will help me!", he gasps up at her. His eyes betray damage that is beyond the bumps, scrapes, and scorch marks on his body. |
| lonewolf01-18-06, 06:06 PM | Oh boy. I hope Karens personality doesnt hinder this quest too much. Already in a bad mood because of that lucky shot that defeated her, Karen is now bugged by seemingly a beggar. She stays in her position, despising the obvious weakness of that man. "Yes you are at the right place. But if you knew how to find us, you should also know that our help has to be earned and is not given away freely. Now speak what you want and what you can offer in exchange before I lose my patience." |
| MitzaVolchenko01-18-06, 06:29 PM | The man takes several deep breaths and closes his eyes, stilling and relaxing his body. For several minutes he lays motionless with his breathing slowed to the point where it is difficult to tell if he is still breathing at all. As Karen's impetuous bad temper is about to cause her to get up and go inside, he opens his eyes again and speaks in a slow calm tone, though there is still a wildness behind the facade of calm, "I am Shang Dai. My student and nephew, Shang Martin set upon me while we camped in the forest beyond the city. He left me to die from exposure and took my texts, which included a full copy of the Talariic Texts and several other works of note." "If you would be so kind as to tell the guildmaster that I am here, I am sure that he will find someone more willing to help a brother of the mind than you," Saying that, he arranges his limbs into a more comfortable position and closes his eyes again. Heh...ya know she could have asked what was wrong or how he came to be in such a disgraceful state...neither promises help without payment. From her knowledge of history and psionics, Karen recognizes the Shang clan as formidable psions, psiwarriors, and war minds. Additionally, she can tell that the wildness and pain in Shang Dai is likely from backlash, psionic damage, and grief at betrayal by a student of his own blood. |
| lonewolf01-18-06, 06:52 PM | As the man starts speking again Karen recognizes a few of the words he is saying and suddenly is very attentive. Talariic Texts? Shang Clan? This guy seems to be much more that he looks like on first sight. She jumps to her feet and helps the man up. "I am sorry. You should have said who you are and that you also command the power of the mind. There are too many beggars running around in this city, begging for help instead of tryomg tp stand up and start helping themselves." She starts guiding him into the guild. "We have a free bed where you can rest and tell your whole story. I am sure we can agree on terms to help you." I didnt imagined that the man had obvious battle wounds. I rather imagined him looking like a beggar weakened from a disease or something. And Karen would probably have done something earlier if she thought that he was in danger of dying. But done is done. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-18-06, 07:08 PM | Shang Dai accepts her help into the guildhall and once settled in bed he studies her closely. "That my name may gain me aid, I am pleased. That one who knows the truth of the oneness of all things should require such to simply help someone is dismaying," there is a hint of bitterness in his tone. "There is little more to tell. I require rest to recover, and by the time I am recovered enough to follow after Shang Martin, he may be beyond my ability to track him. I do not know that you are suited to this task, girl. Perhaps you had better fetch the guildmaster for me..." he is sounding stronger and just a little bit patronizing. He doesn't have anything but minor wounds of the fell down a chimney sort obviously showing. Once I made your checks, you recognized the signs. |
| lonewolf01-18-06, 07:26 PM | Karen tries to hide that her pride his hurt while continuing the conversation. I think here is a bluff check necessary. Will you do such rolls or shall I? "I may be young, old man, but nonetheless you should not underestimate me. My excellent performance in various arena fights has earned me the post of the recruitment officer of the PSI Consortium, so everything you want to tell my Guildmaster, you can also tell me. Plus he is at the moment busy coordinating various other important guild activities to uncover a large conspirancy. But if you insist I will go and fetch him." |
| MitzaVolchenko01-18-06, 10:00 PM | Shang Dai gives Karen a long look betraying no emotion as he studies her then speaks slowly, "Very well, whelp. What is your price for undertaking this task for me? We wouldn't want to disturb the guildmaster if you are eager to prove yourself." |
| lonewolf01-19-06, 07:30 AM | Karen thinks for a moment. "I have been researching about the Talariic texts for quite some time now, and am very intrigued about them. Unfortunately I havent been able to get my hands on them, and neither find someone to instruct my how to unlock the powers that are hidden inside. I would gladly help you recover the texts if you agree to allow me to copy those texts and teach me about their content in return. I am sure that the guild would also be grateful if one of their members has access to those texts and could spread those teachings." |
| MitzaVolchenko01-19-06, 01:37 PM | Shang Dai studies Karen once again, appraisingly,"I shall teach you. IF you return with the Texts, and if you prove capable of learning what I have to teach. In either case the Consortium shall have a copy of my collection. Even if you prove unable to learn my ways, you must consider yourself paid by being given the opportunity," There is a sadness as he adds,"I must have your oath on that point." |
| lonewolf01-19-06, 07:04 PM | Karen nods respektfully. "You have my oath that I will consider myself payed, even if I somehow am unable to understand the principles of the Talariic texts." She straigthens up again and looks at Shang Dai concentrated. "So you want me to track your student. What can you tell me about him and where do you suspect is he going? How exactly do you want me to deal with him? Do you just want him to be gone, or delivered to the officials, or brought back here to you?" |
| MitzaVolchenko01-19-06, 09:46 PM | "Martin is about your age. He is a fine warrior and came to me to learn the higher arts such as described in the Talariic Texts. He is strong but imbalanced. Had I known just how deeply the imbalance went, I would have refused his request for teaching. I suppose in some ways, this is my fault. A wiser teacher might have seen the flaws in him before it was too late." "If you travel out toward the forest sticking to the left fork in the road, you will come soon to the place where we had camped and where he attacked me. From there, I doubt you will have much trouble following him. He was in quite a state when he left me to die. I doubt he covered his tracks overly well." Shang Dai closes his eyes mastering his emotions, "He is now as the rabid animal. If you cannot subdue him, put him down. The knowledge and wisdom contained in the works he stole is more valuable than preserving his life...more valuable than any of our lives did he but know what he truly carries." |
| lonewolf01-20-06, 07:16 AM | "Knowing your enemy is the first step to defeating him. Can you give me any details about his fighting style? Which weapons doe he use? Which powers of the mind has he mastered? Any information can help me greatly." |
| MitzaVolchenko01-20-06, 01:54 PM | "I used to think I could answer that question. Now I can but guess. It is wise of you to ask in any case. He favors spikes of all sorts and is probably still a handy shot with a bow, though I have not been hunting with him since he was a very small child. He can heal himself, and he can add damage to his blows. He also has a fair number of powerstones that I created. They may grant him extra health, increassed armor, and swifter movement. If any were undamaged in our struggle he has our suply of healing draughts as well and perhaps a few of the protective vials survived, though they are delicate." Shang Dai shakes his head ruefully, "He is cunning. It is that which you must be most cautious of. It is that which allowed him to defeat me." |
| lonewolf01-22-06, 08:00 PM | Karen nods again respectfully. "Thank you master Shang Dai. I will waste no more time here but will move fast to catch your nephew before he manages to elude me. I hope you regain your strenght soon. Farewell." With those words Karen leaves the man and starts her pursue, after reporting to Guildmaster Raskos and explaining where she is going and who the man in the room is. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-23-06, 02:13 AM | After a brisk hike you come to where Shang Dai obviously left the main road to camp. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v694/uninvitedtruth/PixieForest2.jpg Yellow indicates the burned area around the camp. Back where you made the turn off, you noticed tracks leading further on down the smaller path as well as fresh tracks leading toward the road you came from. The clearing obviously used to be smaller before the fire. The ashes of several trees is apparent and the underbrushis burned even further into the dense forest area. The turn off to the camp from the path is made obvious by the smell of charred trees. As you move into the clearing to investigate the scene you are buzzed by a perturbed owl. As you turn your attention back to the clearing a rather angry looking pixie appears hovering about ten feet off the ground near where the fire pit is. The pixie is garbed in greens and browns, and she is armed with bow, short sword, and has a scroll case secured to one tiny thigh. "Who are you, and how dare you invade my forest. Strick says you smell like the ones who did this!" |
| lonewolf01-23-06, 04:05 AM | "My name is Karen Douglas from the PSI Consortium of Gladius. I did not plan to intrude your forest, but the one who is responsible for this fire has attacked one of my brothers in mind and has stolen something from him. I am here to chase him and hold him responsible. I assume it is also your wish that this man is taken care of, so any information about this mans whereabouts would be helpful." |
| MitzaVolchenko01-23-06, 04:47 AM | The pixie is clearly angry and as you stand there you can see where it has clearly been working to repair the damage. The pixie looks at you suspiciously and then draws her bow to full draw, "All of your kind destroy things. You take no heed of the life of the forests. You care not that you pollute and destroy everything you touch. You are not welcome in this forest. Leave in peace now, or I shall force you to go." |
| lonewolf01-23-06, 05:33 AM | "While I agree that our objectives may be different, you should try to understand that we have a common cause here. This man that Im looking fo must be stopped before he can recklessly burn another part of the forest and I need to put him down myself. I have no quarrel with either you or the forest and will gladly leave immediately after that criminal is taken care of. And remember the saying: Your enemies enemies may not be your friends, but they can be your allies." |
| MitzaVolchenko01-23-06, 06:55 AM | The pixie considers Karen's words for a moment or two then puts the arrow back in her quiver and draws a scroll from the case, "I will allow you to pass with an oath and on the condition that you submit to a spell to assure that you will carry through with your oath. You must swear that you will harm no plant or animal of this forest, and take from here only the one you seek and the filth that he has brought with him." |
| lonewolf01-23-06, 08:20 AM | Karen evluates the words of the Pixie for a moment before answering. "I am willing to swear an oath that I will not harm any animal or plant in this forest, unless I need to defend myself. But I would be foolish to willingly beeing subject to a magic that is unknown to me and that is used by someone completely unknown to me, no offence meant." If you wanna speed this up to finish the encounter before the boards downtime, Karen will try to solve this peacefully, but would rather not become the subject of an unknown spell. If that is the only peaceful way to solve this, she will accept the spell after some arguing. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-23-06, 02:22 PM | The pixie again considers Karen's words before replying, "You can either submit to my spell peacefully, or I can simply disappear and set the forest against you. The pixie completely vanishes for a few breaths and then reappears twenty feet above Karen's head. "You believe that you mean your words, but I have found that your kind believes that they mean it right up until they start killing my friends. As for defending yourself, that is reasonable so long as it is truly self defense. It doesn't count if you provoke one of my friends into attacking and then try to claim self defense. The magic will know the difference." If you submit to the spell, this encounter ends peacefully. It is a geas that will ensure that you harm no animal nor plant of the forest unless it attacks you first. You cannot get around the geas by intentionally entering the wolves' den for instance and then claiming self defense because they attacked you. |
| lonewolf01-23-06, 02:47 PM | Id like you to do a sense motive on the pixie. If Karen notices no sings of deception(which I assume) she will do the following: "Very well then. Put your spell on me. But be sure that I will avenge myself if your spell harms me even if I keep my oath." |
| MitzaVolchenko01-23-06, 03:12 PM | Karen senses no deception. Pixie Bluff(25 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=343610)) vs. Karen SM (2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=343614)) The pixie unrolls the scroll and flutters a little closer then casts the spell from the scroll. "Be on your way then, and remember your oath. I will know if you have broken it!" You have successfully passed encounter #1. You may continue unhindered down the trail. |
| lonewolf01-23-06, 04:27 PM | Sense Motive is based on Wisdom, so the result should be 5, but that doesnt change anything. Somehow I would feel much safer if you hadnt linked the roll. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-23-06, 04:30 PM | LOL...actually the roll was immaterial, so long as you keep your oath, the spell will not harm you and neither will the pixie. Now keeping the oath may become tricky... |
| MitzaVolchenko01-26-06, 03:12 PM | Karen returns to the main cut off after examining the campsite under the baleful gaze o the pixie as it repairs the damage done in the fight. Upon reaching the cut off, she sees the tracks leading on into the forest and decides to follow them. Please describe your movement and alertness type actions. ie Moving slowly and keeping an eye on the tracks to try to tell if he leaves the trail. or Scanning the way ahead alert for trouble or whatever you have in mind |
| lonewolf01-26-06, 08:42 PM | On the cutoff, Karen prepares herself for the inevitable encounter with the student by manifesting dissolving weapon on her spiked chain before following the trail. She keeps her eyes and ears alert for anything that might pose a danger. She hopes that the student follows the trail, because she would have little chance finding him otherwise, so she concentrates on beeing the first who notices his enemy while moveing forward. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-26-06, 09:30 PM | As Karen proceeds slowly down the path remaining alert, she rounds a corner and sees the opening to a cave, glinting with crystal within. Guarding the cave mouth is a huge plant with several crown-like flowers on it. As she comes within 20 yards of it, the crowns swivel in her direction and she quickly withdraws to consider the situation. Knowledge psionics check (1d20+9=14 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=347438)) Karen stands around the bend in the trail wracking her brain for what the plant is and comes up with the realization that it is an Udoroot. |
| lonewolf01-27-06, 08:28 AM | After some thinking, Karen decides that first she must be sure íf the student is in the cave before trying to get past this dangerous plant. She circles around the cave entrance in some distance, looking for tracks of the student, and also for other possible entrances to the cave. Assuming she finds no evidence that the student is not in the cave and no other entrance: Damn this geas. *sigh* I gotta keep my word. Who knows what this magic will do to me. She moves to a place just outside the plants perception radius and starts preparing for running past it. She uses a stone of Vigor[ML4], manifests Force Screen and lastly uses her stone of Skate. Then she tests her luck and tries to run through the entrance as fast as possible, to give the plant as little time as possible to affect her. A map would be useful. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-28-06, 02:02 AM | The four stone wide area on the forest map is what you have. The plant occludes the majority of the entrance, but as I stated in IM you do have space to move past it counting it as half movement for terrain. I will run the rounds for the attempt tomorrow. If I see something that I missed when I first wrote it up that may make your tactic completely unsound, I will let you know. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-29-06, 04:12 PM | Iniatives: Udoroot(1d20=7 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=349878)) Karen: (1d20+3=5 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=349876)) Round 1 Udoroot is unaware of Karen granting a surprise round. Karen double moves 70' toward cave entrance slowing to half movement at the plant, and ends at 5' diagonal from plant. Karen 51 HP move 35' Round 2 The plant cannot reach Karen and so uses its double manifest ability Energy Stun-Karen's save (1d20+5=12 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=349887)) fails. Damage (2d6=7 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=349888)). Will save vs. Stun (1d20+4=16 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=349889)) success, Karen is not stunned. Udoroot manifests Mind Thrust Karen fails save (1d20+4=10 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=349890)) and takes (4d10=25 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=349891)) points of damage. Karen double moves into the cave 70' getting out of range of the plant. Karen 19HP move 35' You have used 2 rounds of your skate. It will remain active for the next 8 rounds (carrying into next week). Feel free to continue on now as you are counted as sucessfully past this week's obstacle for now (keep in mind that it is not dead, merely waiting for you to come back). |
| MitzaVolchenko01-29-06, 04:18 PM | http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v694/uninvitedtruth/CrystalGrotto.jpg Light areas reflect the area of the cave that is healthy crystal. You are in the second space west of the first left hand turn off on the north edge of the main path. In the healthy areas of the cave you can see by the dim glow given off by the crystal. There are no creatures in the immediate area nor do you hear anything other than the rustling of the udoroot behind you and the drip of water from the crystal (it is only small drips, the cave is not flooded only moist). |
| lonewolf01-29-06, 09:32 PM | There should also be my Force Screen still running. Karen knows that the most dangerous part has probably yet to come, so she takes out 3 healing potions and drinks them. The potions are enough to close all the wounds (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=350089). After that she takes out and uses another stone of Vigor[ML4]. Finally she manifests expansion(augmented to 3pp for increased duration) and Biofeedback. 6 rounds spent healing/buffing. As soon as she is done with all that she moves to the next crossing and carefully looks around the corners. Double move at half speed. Hide+Move silently |
| lonewolf02-01-06, 11:28 PM | Move Silently; Listen (1d20-1=0, 1d20+2=21) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=353345) |
| MitzaVolchenko02-01-06, 11:34 PM | As Karen comes to the next turning she hears someone talking to her left. After a very few seconds it is clear that they are ranting to nobody and rather incoherently. Just as she moves to go toward the darkened area, she drops an empty potion bottle which shatters with a crash. The voice goes silent for a moment and Karen goes stock still waiting and listening. She hears someone moving toward her location but cannot see through the darkness of the area of the dying crystal. |
| lonewolf02-04-06, 09:27 AM | Karen stays in position and readies a trip attack should her target move around the corner. I dont think that a diplomatic solution would be Karens style. also she would probably lose the element of suprise. active powers: Dissolving Weapon, Force Screen, Expansion, Biofeedback, Vigor, Skate?(probably gone by now) |
| MitzaVolchenko02-04-06, 06:10 PM | Skate is active for one more round or so by my count. Submit tactics for fighting yourself. The element of suprise is not total, so no surprise round, but I will leave you with the readied action. Also, is your goal to kill or incapacitate? |
| MitzaVolchenko02-07-06, 10:47 PM | Init Martin (17+3=20) Karen (12+3=15) In this fight all things are equal except that Martin has an additional level of wilder, full health, full buffs available, and full PP's. lonewolf has agreed to offline rolls as Invis Cast is running slower tonight than it was last night when it took me three times the normal rate to run one fight thanks to staring at it waiting to update. Karen hears Martin on the other side of the wall she is standing by. She can hear him muttering to himself having dismissed the noise he heard from her clumsy movement. Karen holds her breath trying to decipher what he is saying. After a few seconds it is apparent that he is talking to his spiked chain. Less than half a breath after she figures that out, there is a deafening shattering sound as he strikes the healthy wall. The area gets darker. Karen inches into the full darkness and looks out into the light trying to decide what to do and preparing to try to trip Martin if he appears in range. Karen hears another deafening splinter as Martin shatters another section of Crystal and comes into view around the corner(treat as sound burst-Karen takes 1d8=4 points of damage and attempts fort save vs. stun (17+7=24) not stunned) Karen attempts to trip Martin (20!) for melee touch Karen STR (16+12=19) Martin (12+3=15). He goes down taking (6+5+5+6=22)points of dissolving weapon damage. Martin stands and takes an AoO from Karen (15+7=22 vs AC 23-4 for prone=19) suffering (5+4+7=16) points of damage. Martin takes a 5's step back into the light area and out of her reach as she cannot pass into it expanded and strikes the wall with his spiked chain shattering another section of the light and darkening the area of the entire juncture. Martin screams at her incomprehensibly and clearly insane. |
| MitzaVolchenko02-07-06, 11:57 PM | Karen switches weapons to bow, properly putting her chain away. Martin draws a power stone and attempts to activate it (1!) and brainburns himself for (3) rounds taking (6) damage. Karen fires (29+5=24) and hits for (4+6+3=13). Martin takes brainburn dmg and falls unconscious to the floor. ************************* Karen uses a sunrod to explore the nearyby cavern and finds Shang Dai's packs are stacked soaked in oil in a circle of stones. Clearly Martin intended to burn them. The walls of the cavern are scarred from Martin's attacks on them and the crystal is sick or dying. Near the packs, Karen finds signs that something has been killed and cut into pieces too small to determine its original form. There are some bone fragments that have clearly been gnawed by human teeth. Sickened, she gathers them and returns to the fallen student. He has died of the brain burn and his face is frozen in a hideous mask. After stripping him of his pouch, she decides that she is too encumbered to carry the body out with her as she still must get past the plant (with no skate this time). Shivering as she ocnsiders what might happen to one whose mind loses its stability insuch a way, she heads for the entrance to the cave. As she gets into line with the cave mouth, she takes a deep breath and sprints for the open air. The Udoroot senses her and double manifests Udoroot manifests Mind Thrust Karen fails save (7+4=11) (6+4=10)and takes (2+5+2+3+1+4+1+7=25) points of damage before getting out of range. Trudging wearily homeward it begins to rain... I appreciate you not insisting on the online roller elsewise I would have had to hold you over for next week. I had to improvise your tactics since expanded you didn't fit back through the passage, but if I had allowed the expansion in the reverse order you would have lost your buffs as Martin refused to be anything like in range assuming he ever even noticed you were there. You got very lucky on my roll of one for poor Martin. The even greater stroke of luck was that the Udoroot rolled for nothing on its 8d10 dmg. We can finish up the rp at our leisure. You have won your quest and may edit appropriately. Upon her return to PSI, Karen finds Shang Dai meditating and looking much stronger. |
| lonewolf02-08-06, 08:12 AM | I could nitpick a few things about the fight, but as I already won Im just posting this for your information: The followup attack after the trip is missing. A few of the rolls look strange (16+12=19)(29+5=24) I guess the last one should be (19+5=24). Karen could have squeezed through the passage. In some cases, you may have to squeeze into or through an area that isn’t as wide as the space you take up. You can squeeze through or into a space that is at least half as wide as your normal space. Each move into or through a narrow space counts as if it were 2 squares, and while squeezed in a narrow space you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty to AC. When a Large creature (which normally takes up four squares) squeezes into a space that’s one square wide, the creature’s miniature figure occupies two squares, centered on the line between the two squares. For a bigger creature, center the creature likewise in the area it squeezes into. A creature can squeeze past an opponent while moving but it can’t end its movement in an occupied square. To squeeze through or into a space less than half your space’s width, you must use the Escape Artist skill. You can’t attack while using Escape Artist to squeeze through or into a narrow space, you take a –4 penalty to AC, and you lose any Dexterity bonus to AC. As Karen returns to the consortium she notices Shang Dai in meditation she moves up to him. "Greetings master Dai. I have completed your task and recovered the texts." With those words she holds out the texts to him. btw: You said earlier that you had another idea how to get past the Udorootwithout angering the pixie permanently. Any chance of telling me what that idea is? EDIT: I think the quest rewards are a little off. First I also gain the quest completion bonus to xp. Second I should get 6400gp out of a ECL5 quest, where items do only count as 3/4 of their market price but can only be sold at half market price. Please confirm that asap to give me some time to edit. |
| MitzaVolchenko02-08-06, 09:21 PM | edited rewards...the rolls were where my braindead self attempted to correct and or was typing through arthritic agony Shang Dai rises to his feet and accepts the texts looking Karen over without speaking for several minutes. As if reading what has happened on her face he says simply, "Martin is dead. Per our agreement, I name you my student. What you are able to learn, I shall teach." |
