Any fool can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with fortune's aid; only a master strategist can ensure lasting victory. War is a series of battles; losing a battle does not necessarily indicate the war is lost. Seek out your opponent's weaknesses and recognize your own; avoid an opponent's strengths and play to your own. Only by focusing one's own strengths on the opponent's vulnerabilities can triumph be ensured. In times of war prepare for peace; in times of peace prepare for war. Seek out your enemy's allies, and be prepared to compromise. Life is an endless series of skirmishes with ocassional outbreaks of war. Be ready - and have a contingency plan. His love of battle clashed markedly with the peaceful nature of his people, and the fact that his combat skills generally exceeded those of most of his race only lead him to a superior attitude that was quite infurating to most of his kin. He left his home at a fairly young age (for an Elf at least - 87) to seek places where he may develope his talents to thier greatest potential and where he may be forever surrounded by the thrill of battle. His second great love, dancing, was the only thing he had in common with most of his people, and he has sought long for fighting styles which can fuse his two loves. He worked for some time after his departure from his home as a mercenary and caravan guard, but the battles he fought were few and easy - just small-time upstart bandits. He came to Gladius due to the rumors of its magnificent arena, and was not disappointed. He intends to remain here for the remainder of his life, practicing both his talents until they reach perfection and hormony with each other. The defeats he has been handed since arriving have done nothing to eliminate his cocky attitude, of course, so he can often be annoying, but to those he befriends he is the staunchest of allies. He is quite tall for an Elf, almost to the height of an average human, which helps him to fit in among the shorter-lived races. His silvery hair is fairly long, ending halfway between his shoulders and his elbows, and is usually neatly combed (in fact, his entire appearance can rarely be described as anything less than "prim and proper" - in spite of his rougish actions and at times attitude, many would swear he was born a noble). Unlike most of his people, who revear Corellon Lareethein or other Elven deities, Featylec has taken up the worship of a human Goddess - the Red Knight, Goddess of strategy and tactics. He believes that a sturdy weapon, swift feet, and keen mind will enable him to overcome anything. For this reason he abhors any mind-numbing substance, especially alchohol, which may take "the edge of readiness" from his mind. Of course, he lacks a little in common sense, and thus ocassionally insults the wrong people, but as he is used to a wanderer's life this rarely bothers him - he just moves to another section of the city. His most peculiar trait, however, may be his distaste for expletives - he has been known to start duels over being sworn at, and no curse has ever passed his lips. | lonewolf03-15-06, 08:14 PM | Featylec has heard about increased bandit activity in Gawane and has decided to gather some intelligence about those bandits and maybe even deal with some of them if the opportunity presents itself. After one evening in a local tavern, where he used his skills as professional dancer as cover, he was not able to find out more than the most basic information about those bands. There seem to be 3 larger ones with a score of members each and half a dozend smaller with about 10 members each. With this information he returns to his sleeping quarters in the guildhouse. But on the way he walks by a small dark alley and he hears obvious sounds of someone beeing beaten up coming out of there. Jumping right into the action. |
| Zevox03-15-06, 08:21 PM | Bandits can hardly give more obvious signs than this, the Elf thought to himself. Well, short of rampant pillaging and burning down buildings anyway, but the groups that did that didn't last long. Perhaps these ones were as green as the lot he used to drive off caravans back east. Moving to the edge of the alleyway stealithly he peers in, checking to see just what was going on, hand near his weapons in case they should be needed. Works for me. You want to roll everything yourself, or should I do my own rolling over at IC? |
| lonewolf03-15-06, 08:37 PM | I will do the rolls on the CoCo roller. You can check it here (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=87). Featylec sees 2 orcs and 2 halforcs beating up a small humanoid lying on the ground before them. They are about 40ft away and have no weapons drawn, although you see greataxes on the back of the orcs. None of them has noticed Featylec yet. |
| Zevox03-15-06, 08:53 PM | Featylec wrinkled his nose in disgust. Orcs. Figures - the brutes always did like working as bandits. Knowing thier victim could probably fill him in on them somewhat - and if not he could ask them about it if he could capture one - he prepares to deal with the brutes. Pulling out a potion and quaffing its contents he causes a light blue aura to appear to surround him, providing him protection from whatever they may throw at him. He then draws his bow and moves quietly closer, trying to get close enough to pick out thier weak spots, then opens fire at the nearest of the four. With thier attention gained, he yells to them "I think you lot need to be taught a lesson about beating up on little folks. Don't you brutes have mothers to tell you not pick on those smaller than you?" Quaff a potion of shield of faith, draw bow, and sneak to within 30' undetected if at all possible. If thier attention is on thier target then I should be able to make it just moving silently I think. Then make a sneak attack shot on the nearest one (favored enemy bonus and all). That one is the dodge buddy too. |
| lonewolf03-16-06, 10:03 AM | Featylec melds with the shadows perfectly and simply disappears from sight from all but the most aware observers. The arrow pierces the orcs leather armor and comes out on the other side of his shoulder. But the 4 of them only slowly turn in your direction and Featylec manages to get another shot at the orc before theycan react. The arrow catches the turning orc in his throat and it takes a few seconds for the orc to realize that he is dead. You still have a move action in round 1 |
| Zevox03-16-06, 02:43 PM | Really? Wouldn't my movement + bow drawing use it? Oh well, if I've still got it, equip my shield. Presuming they close to melee, drop the bow next round, draw my rapier, and fight defensively (-4 attack, +3 dodge bonus to AC). We'll see if these guys can hit an AC of 27/28 :) . Speaking of which, one of the full-blooded Orcs is the new dodge buddy (or the only one if the one already down was one of them). |
| lonewolf03-16-06, 07:30 PM | You entered the fight with your bow in hand. Suprise round: You shoot one arrow. First round: You win initiative, shoot another arrow and kill one orc. Then you have another move action to draw the shield. Clear? Howling mad about the death of his orc friend, the other orc charges at you with his Greataxe high and his strike puts a hole in the wall behind Featylec, how is only able to dodge this bow narrowly. Dodge saved you there The two Halforcs are less aggressive as they draw a battleaxe and a handaxe each and move into flanking position, leaving you no escape route. As the three of them move away from the small humanoid body that lies helpless on the ground, Featylec is suprised to be able to identify him. It is Gratt, the goblin cook working in the WAR Guildhouse! Any changes to your plan? |
| Zevox03-16-06, 07:47 PM | Ah, that explains it. I forgot about the whole surprise round thing. "Gratt!" Featylec couldn't help blurting out at the sight of the Goblin. He was one of the few members of the staff at the Guild Featylec knew by name - he made some of the best chicken Featylec had eaten since leaving his home. Turning an angry look on the Orcs encircling him he added "Not only do you need lessons in manners, you apparently need to learn not to mess with the Warfare Alliance. This won't end well for you lot." He then launches a measured strike at one of the Orcs, aiming for a weak spot he knew of from his study of ways to beat the repulsive creatures. No change in plans currently. Drop the bow and draw the rapier, and unless they prove too hard to hit I want to fight defensively and target the one granting the flanking first. Don't forget about that potion of Shield of Faith I quaffed at the beggining too - that attack missed by a bit more than just the dodge bonus ;) . |
| lonewolf03-18-06, 09:48 PM | Featylec hits the orc through a weakness of his Leather armor, dealing a bleeding wound. But th orc doesnt seem to notice and strikes again with all his power. Featylec tried to avert the blow with his Rapier, but he had underestimated the blows strength and takes a deep wound into his shoulder. 14 damage The two flanking halforcs also try to find a flaw in Featylecs defense, but their attempts are futile. Featylec knows that he cannot take another hit from this dangerous Greataxe and tries to kill the orc before he can strike again. His thrust easily defeats the orcs defense again, but despite bleeding out of two precise wounds, the orc refuses to fall. As good as the orcs last attack was, as bad is his next one. With luck one of the halforcs is able to dodge the attack that was supposed to hit the elf. The two halforcs also fail to penetrate Featylecs defenses despite their flurry of attacks. Knowing that the orc cannot possibly survive another hit, Featylec strikes precisely into his throat and draws it out again before the orc even saw the attack coming. The halforcs continue their assault in vain. Turning his attention to the Halforcs, Featylec notices after his first strike that their defenses are not much better than those of the orc as he manages to deal a mortal wound on his first simple thrust, leaving him only one enemy. Oblivious to his desperate situation, the halforc tries to feint with his handaxe before the battleaxe deals the real attack, but Featylec has seen this coming even before the halforc thought about this maneuver himself. But slowly this fight starts to tire the elf as he misses the first time against the weak defenses of the Halforc, but his attack is still much more dangerous that the puny attacks of the halforc that followed. His next attack is better, dealing a wound into the halforcs right leg, while dodging another 2 attacks of his enemy. Another 2 misses from Featylec give the halforc actually the chance for a lucky hit. 3 damage But Featylecs riposte pierces the halforcs eye and kills the last of his enemies. Challenge of this week is over but we should continue to roleplay, because the biggest non-combat part of the quest is now between the first and second encounter. |
| Zevox03-18-06, 09:58 PM | Grinning with the rush of the battle, the Elf gives a baleful stare at the Orcs' bodies, as well as a grin that seems to say "I told you so." He then looks at the wound in his shoulder, wincing at the pain that shoots through it as he arcs his neck to see it clearly. Deep indeed - the Orc had been lucky. Pulling out a wand he had recently purchased, told it would be heal wounds, he taps it against his shoulder, relieved to feel its healing energies working as promised as the wound knits shut. Use Wand of CLW to heal back up to full hp. Sheathing his blade and shouldering his shield but with the wand still in hand in case it was needed, Featylec rushes over to Gratt, concerned for the little Goblin. [Use charges of the wand to heal him if he needs it.]"Gratt, are you okay? What happened with those brutes?" Natural 20 eh? That Orc was one lucky bastard. Thats the only way he could've hit Featylec with a mere +7 to his attack. Ah well, good thing I decided to give Featylec that Ranger level for the wand I suppose. |
| lonewolf03-18-06, 10:20 PM | 3 charges used on you +1 for Gratt. Even after a charge of the healing wand, the goblin seems to be disoriented a bit. Panicking he talks a few sentences in goblin before calming enough to notice that you dont understand him and thus switching to common. "Sokra! Where is she? Have you seen my wife?!" He sits up and looks around still in panic. |
| Zevox03-18-06, 10:28 PM | Wincing, Featylec responds regretfully (and in an attempt at being soothing), "No, I haven't seen her I'm afraid, but if shes missing I'd be more than glad to help you look for her. Just calm yourself for a moment, take a deep breath, and tell me whats going on. Why were those brutes attacking you, and what happened to Sokra?" |
| lonewolf03-19-06, 09:57 PM | The goblin does take a few deep breaths and relaxes a bit. He looks around and counts the number of dead orcs lying around. "Oh no! The others must have taken her away already. And now as soon as they notice that these 4 are dead, they will kill her for revenge." He starts to sob but then he gets an idea and quickly turns to you. "You! ... You could save her! I am bagging you master Featylec, you must help me recover my wife!" |
| Zevox03-19-06, 10:02 PM | Featylec gives a sympathetic smile. "Of course I'll help, Gratt. Didn't I just say I would? Don't worry." the Elf replies, trying to further calm the grieving Goblin. "Just please, tell me what you can about what happened. What others are you talking about, and where may they have taken your wife? Whats more, why would they attack you and kidnap her in the first place? Are these bandits looking to strike at the Warfare Alliance, or do they have something against you or her in particular?" |
| lonewolf03-21-06, 11:17 AM | After another few deep breaths the goblin finally calms down enough to tell you the whole story: "Sokra and I were on our way home as these brutes stalked upon us. Thwas six or seven of them. Some of them took Sokra and carried her away, while the others took me and carried me into this alley. They said to me that they would keep her until I could pay them a thousand gold! I told them that I didnt have anything close of that money, I did, but they just laughed and said that I should get it out of the vaults of the guild since ... since goblins are all a bunch of thieves, they said. But we arent! Gratt is loyal to the guild! When I told them that I couldnt get the money they started hitting me and told me that they would treat Sokra likewise if I dont comply. Please Master you must help me!" |
| Zevox03-21-06, 02:29 PM | Featylec nods grimly at the reply. So it wasn't the Guild they were after, just its money? Typical bandits then. And just as sloppy as those he'd seen before, if they thought they could steal from a warriors' guild by beating on one of its staff. "I understand Gratt. Don't worry about a thing - I'll get Sokra back safely, and make sure these brutes regret messing with you and her or the Warfare Alliance. Just tell me where you last saw them and what direction they were headed and I'll track them down. You head back to the guild and let Gwar and the others know whats going on. They at least should know that these bandits have taken an interest in the Guild, and that they're not above such tactics. Plus the other staff members need to know to watch themselves lest these guys have any accomplices to try this again after I finish with this lot." |
| lonewolf03-21-06, 06:39 PM | "Thank you master. You are most generous! But Gratt didnt see where the others were going to. They grabbed us just out there." He points to the street where you are coming from. "Gratt will do as you told him. He will warn the others af those filthy orcs. Is there anything else I can help you with?" |
| Zevox03-21-06, 09:32 PM | Featlyec gives Gratt a friendly grin. "Not at all Gratt - I'm always glad to help my friends. This could turn into a long search though if I don't even have a direction to start in..." Featylec gets an idea at this, and moves quickly over to the corpses behind him, rummaging through thier belongings and trying not to gag at the stench (a combination of corpse and Orc, one of the worst possible smells he could imagine), seeking for anything that might indicate where they had been or where they stayed, any hint that might give him a place to start looking for thier still-living friends. |
| lonewolf03-21-06, 10:08 PM | Beside their armor and weapons, these orcs and half orcs have not much with them, but Featylec does find a note on one of the halforcs. It pretty much confirms the story you have heard from Gratt and also mentiones a warehouse were the hostage should be held. Featylec knows that near to the docks are a number of warehouses that could be meant with this description. |
| Zevox03-22-06, 01:32 PM | Pondering this for a moment, Featylec turns to Gratt. "I do believe I've found my direction. Let Gwar know that I'm heading down to the docks here in Gawane." After seeing that Gratt was on his way to the Guildhall, Featylec headed down towards the docks of Gawane, intent on checking some of the taverns to see if he could hear anything interesting about a warehouse. The regulars of some of the taverns in the city gossiped more than some of the nobles back in his home. Though he didn't drink, Featylec knew that if nothing else he could offer to do a performance as a cover for his prescence. Sometimes it helped to be so talented. Well, this could get interesting. Can't try the taverns for too long for risk of missing the opportunity to rescue Sokra before they get suspicious, but at the moment I've got no other ideas. Kinda makes me wish Featylec had some ranks in Knowledge (Local) or Gather Information. *sigh* |
| lonewolf03-23-06, 12:40 AM | It takes some time for Featylec to find some information, but then he is lucky to find a friendly guy who knows his way in Gawane and has no problem identifying the bandits for him. They call themselves "Red Axes" and have taken over a small abandoned warehouse near the docks as their base of operations. They are(or were) about a dozend half orcs and orcs total and their Leader is a brute called Grubarsch. They do usually in protection money, kidnapping and simple street robberies. Featylec gets a good description of the warehouse and gets going to the warehouse after buying the guy a drink. As long as you roll high on untrained gather information, you dont need ranks. ;) |
| Zevox03-23-06, 12:55 AM | Leaving the man behind with his beer, glad to be out of the tavern, Featylec heads cautiously down towards the warehouse, keeping a look out for any suspicious Orcs or Half-Orcs as he goes. Not bad. I wasn't expecting such good rolling after all the luck I've had in arena matches lately - first Featylec vs Finrod, then Aldyrr vs Tueor, then the first run of that hellish FFA last week. Maybe my luck will hold out for another week or two :) . |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 10:33 AM | Featylec circles around the warehouse and sees no sentries. The house has a large main gate and a backdoor entrance. He also hears loud noises coming out of the warehouse that he can identify as some kind of party going on in there. He is quite sure that a good deal of alcohol is involved. |
| Zevox03-24-06, 10:41 AM | Featylec scoffs at the thought. Well, if these Orcs were fool enough to drink themselves into a stupor, he may as well tke advantage of it. He cautiously approaches the back door as quietly as he can, checking to see if its locked. |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 12:17 PM | The door doesnt appear to be locked, but there is a large sign on the door: "Red Axe teritori! Evrivone ceep aut! |
| Zevox03-24-06, 12:25 PM | "Atrocious spelling..." Featylec mutters to himself, shaking his head. Cautious despite the seeming greeness of his foes, he checks the door for the traps. If I find no traps, open the door slightly to peer inside and confirm that there are no sentries inside. If none, go in stealthily and start searching for where Sokra may be held. If there are some (traps or sentries), I'll probably want a different plan. |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 12:36 PM | Featylec finds no traps, but he does notice that the hinges of the door are old and rusty, which could result in a lot of noise when he opens the door. |
| Zevox03-24-06, 12:43 PM | Featylec pauses and frowns at this. Not good - even if the Orcs were busy at the drink, odds were at least one would hear the noise of the door opening. Could be why they left neither sentry nor traps, he realized. Probably best not to go in this way unless absolutely necessary then. The Elf backs up, scanning the building for the any other entrances, particularly windows or vents. |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 12:52 PM | Beside the gate and the backdoor, Featylec finds a couple of windows. While they are large enough to pass through, they are too high for him to reach them without a ladder. |
| Zevox03-24-06, 01:13 PM | How's the side of the building look for possibly climbing up? Ill repair and plenty of hand/foot holds, uneven and few such holds, smooth and nigh impossible, etc? |
| lonewolf03-24-06, 07:14 PM | It shouldnt be too difficult to get up to the roof. Climbing to a window, opening it quietly and in without anyone noticing is a good deal harder. |
| Zevox03-24-06, 07:22 PM | Featylec considers his options. The front way is a definite no-go - if anywhere could be more conspicuos than that, he didn't know where. The back door being rusty would be quite a risk to open, and the last thing he wanted was to have the whole party bearing down on him the moment he entered the building. The window looked like a difficult option too, but at least not as immediately fatal as the other two were likely to be. Still, the wall being easily climbable, perhaps another entrance existed on the roof - a vent, chimeny, or skylight perhaps. Deciding this was worth the time looking into it would take the Elf began to scale the building, careful to select a spot where he wouldn't pass any windows on the way up. |
| lonewolf03-25-06, 08:14 AM | and the good rolls continue  With the famous grace of the elves Featylec easily climbs up to the roof of the warehouse. Up there he sees that this warehouse has a large hole in the ceiling and noone seems to bother to repair it. He carefully closes to that hole and is able to take a look into the building. It consist of one large room and one trapdoor seems to lead into a cellar. The warehouse is mainly empty with little chests and the like to take cover, so sneaking around without beeing noticed is unlikely. The bandits down there consist of 3 orcs and 3 halforcs, similar armed like the ones you fought before. They are all drinking, but most of them are not really drunk yet. |
| Zevox03-25-06, 08:21 AM | Any easy way down? And any of those chests near to hole? |
| lonewolf03-25-06, 08:30 AM | not really. its only 15ft however, so jumping down isnt that dangerous. |
| Zevox03-25-06, 08:42 AM | Frowning, Featylec again pauses to consider his options. This way in was probably his best, but leaping into the midst of an even higher number of foes than he had fought before wasn't appealing. Still, he couldn't really afford to wait until they were dead drunk, lest they get wind of what happened to thier frends and decide to do something to Sokra. Time for some daring, then, he thought with a mischievious grin on his face. He drew his bow and tapped a tattoo on his shoulder, bringing a field of translucent energy to life before him. Picking the nearest of the targets, he fires with his bow, watching the shot arc for the shocked Orc, the look on its face priceless. Draw bow, tap tattoo of force screen, and shoot the nearest enemy for a sneak attack. Follow up with another shot if initiative goes my way - if not I'll adjust as we go. |
| lonewolf03-25-06, 08:50 AM | I should mention that even from above you are within 30' of at least 2 of the enemies. |
| Zevox03-25-06, 02:16 PM | I should mention that even from above you are within 30' of at least 2 of the enemies. Oh, really? Well then, that changes things. Previous post edited. |
| lonewolf03-25-06, 06:19 PM | Featylec takes aim and his arrow hits the orc exactly in his neck and exits on the other side. Unable even to scream, the orc breaks down, dead. critical  But the others react suprisingly fast to this new threat. The three halforcs pick up light crossbows and take cover behind the few chests standing around while the orcs reach to their greataxes and move to the backdoor. |
| Zevox03-25-06, 08:11 PM | Deciding to make this fight on his terms, not thiers, Featylec continues firing, aiming for the Half-Orcs with crossbows, then backs up just enough to make himself a harder target for the Half-brutes. RP says it all - shoot a crossbow-wielder, then back up enough to gain cover if possible. If not don't back up, I'd rather keep my eye on them so I don't need to make spot checks later. And jeez, my luck is hanging on a lot longer than I thought. I just hope it extends to my other arena fights this week - Eraca got it, but she really didn't need it (in fact, she was the only one that didn't). |
| lonewolf03-26-06, 11:57 AM | Featylecs aim stays true as his second shot drops another enemy. The two remaining halforcs shoot at the elf, but miss widely. The two orcs leave the building and Featylec hears sounds as if they start climbing up to him. One of them manages to pull himself up fast, while the other struggles a bit. |
| Zevox03-26-06, 12:51 PM | Knowing these two were a bigger threat than the crossbowmen, Featylec shoots an arrow at the one who has topped the wall, moving to try and put the hole between himself and the Orc to prevent an easy rush by his foe. Shoot the one who made it up, then if he lives manuever so the hole prevents him from charging. Also if he lives hes my dodge buddy (if not one of the crossbowmen is). Edit: Since we're getting closer to the deadline and I'm about to become very busy for a couple of days, basic strategy: shoot 'em. If the Orc on the roof falls, pepper the crossbowmen with arrows until his buddy makes it up, then shoot his buddy. If either meleer ever gets adjacent, drop the bow (though not in the hole ;) ) and draw the rapier, and attack using fight defensively (if I miss 3+ attacks in a row that way, presume hitting him is too hard with the attack loss and switch to normal attacking). Then of course resume sniping the snipers until everybody's a corpse. Heal if it becomes necessary (hp 10 or less), though I doubt it will. |
| lonewolf03-31-06, 09:22 AM | Featylec shoots at the orc on the roof, but his shot goes wide. The orc closes to him with his greataxe in hand screaming: "You will regret messing with the Red Axes!" The other orc also pulls himself up to the roof now. The halforcs have no line of sight to the elf and also startto move outside. Featylec drops the bow and attacks with his rapier. He pierces the orcs armor and deals a wound into his side. The orc rages in pain and responds with a mighty blow with his axe, but the elf leaps easily away. The other orc now also moves close Featylec but the two dont flank him yet. Another aimed thrust of the elf puts an end to the mighty swings of the first orc who stumbles and falls down the hole into the building. The second orc now strikes in rage at the elf himself, but his strike lands solidly in the roof and he has troubles pulling it out again. The two halforcs also climb up to the roof, each with two axes in hand. Featylec thrusts at the remaining orc, but he is not where the elf expects him to be as he is still busy pulling out his axe. As bad his last attack was, as good is this one as he cuts a deep wound into Featylecs left leg 10damage. The two halforcs close in. Feaylec responds to his wound with another thrust into the orcs shoulder. The orc misses with another swing, but one of the halforcs hit, while they are flanking him 8 damage. I give you a short time to respond here. Featylec is surrounded by 3 guys and down to 5hp. They only hit you with natural 20ies but thats still a 5%chance per attack. If you dont respond, I have Featylec heal himself up a few times with his wand, but he will lose the defensive fighting bonus during that time. |
| Zevox03-31-06, 11:07 AM | Man, where did that luck of mine go off to  ? Okay, just one question: how far a drop is the hole? If its just 10 or 15', tumble into it if I'm still within 15' of it, using a tumble check to negate falling damage (in case tumble to avoid AoOs fails, remember mobility bonus vs those). Draw my wand during this movement (wand=weapon-like=legal to draw on a move), and heal once I'm down there (preferably to 11+ hp, but if I'm followed by more than one switch to defensive fighting with the rapier). If I still have movement left of a single move action after the tumble, get away from the hole and as close to a piece of cover as I can. These guys will then have to choose between climbing back down and jumping in after me, and I'm guessing few if any of them are that great at jumping (though that guess could come back to bite me). Oh yeah, one of the full-blood Orcs is dodge buddy. Fingers crossed for Featylec! |
| lonewolf03-31-06, 06:15 PM | The wounded Elf gracefully tumbles past the bullies and lands safely beside the dead orc down there. There he uses his wand to close some of the worst wounds (7 points healed). The three remaining bandits jump after him and only the orc lands slightly off balance. Featylec parries their weak attempts to stab him again. He starts a riposte on the orc but despite his hit the orc remains standing. Featylec dodges all incoming attacks again and finally takes the last orc down with a stab through his liver. The two remaining halforcs attack simultaniously with their 4 axes and miss completely. But the elf also misses this time. In their flurry of attacks, one of the halforcs luckily passes through the elves parries and delivers a hit that is one hit too much for the poor elf and brings him down. Really sorry pal. The dice didnt love you this time. Updating the questlog now. |
| Zevox03-31-06, 11:07 PM | Well, dark and empty. Where on earth did they get all those natural 20s from? And only one took any damage from the jump? Good God. Oh well, at least I don't lose anything from the quest. Just out of curiosity, how much hp did these guys have? I was under the impression that with 6 of them around they couldn't possibly have much, since NPCs don't get max hp at thier first hit dice. Also out of curiosity, you up for trying this again in couple of weeks? Next week I'll have Featylec active in the arena (need to earn WAR something, eh?), and the week after that he'll probably sit out, but I don't want to leave the Gawane Bandits plot hook hanging when its so perfect for Featylec. Not necessarily a rerun of this same quest, but another quest with the same goal of going against the bandits. |
| lonewolf04-01-06, 09:03 PM | well the halforcs(rogues) had 8 and the orcs(babarians) 16 while raging. I didnt know that NPCs dont get full hp first level, but I actually doubt that this would have changed this fight. For this fight I lowered the CR to 2/3 each, since I gave you plenty opportunities to make it easier. You could have waited until they drunk, asleep or both, and there was this hole in the roof that gave you essentially 2 free kills. If you want to, I will try to come up with another plot idea and give you another chance. |

If you want to, I will try to come up with another plot idea and give you another chance. Looking over the rolls again, you're probably right. Only instance where it may matter was round 22 where if the hp change would let the 8 damage blow kill the not-yet-raging Orc, it would let the 9 damage attack in the next round fall on another one. Doubt that though with all the hp an Orc Barbarian would have. Perhaps also later with all those 4 or 5 damage hits to the last full-blood Orc. Doubt it would ultimately change things though, particularly with thematic rolls kept giving them all those natural 20s. Not much for it when the dice are that against me. Anyway, I opted not to wait since, from Featylec's perspective, he needed to hurry to make sure they didn't get word of thier comrades' death and do something to Sokra. Else you're right, I certainly would have had Featylec wait until they were asleep or drunk and kill them when they could hardly resist. And absolutely, I want to have Featylec take another go at the bandits (already posted a little RP to that effect in the WAR Guild even). I'm just going to have him head into the arena at least once before trying again, to get some income from him to the Warfare Alliance and to see if I can get him enough cash for an amulet of health +1 (that'd really help his hp problems methinks). If you want to questlord then that'd be great, though of course if you'd rather not thats fine too. Current plan is to have him off on the week of April the 19th (he fights the 5th and sits out on the 12th), so you'd have plenty of time if you want to run the quest. |
