Morro was just 40 years old when his home was attacked. He wanted to join the fighting but his father asked him to look after his younger brother. The dwarven city crumbled under the attack. To ensure there safety the children and other non-combatants retreated to a surface entrance to the stronghold. Still the dwarves were unable to stop the intruders. As a final act to defend the young, a purposeful cave-in halted the enemy. Cut off from their home, the remaining cavern section provided shelter. The survivors were forced to venture to the surface world for food. During a hunt Morro and his brother were captured by slavers. They were forced to work for them and fight in the arena. His brother escaped but Morro continue to await the opportunity to breaks the bonds of his captors.

It was dark in the passages beneath the arena, but this was where the note had said they were to meet. Eland mused that it was indeed a good place for meetings of a clandestine type as there was no light down. He had noticed that many of the holding cells initially designed to hold various animals and magical beasts for the arena monster fights where empty, and a few, mostly those in this particular corridor, actually held creatures of a different sort. A variety of intelligent beings, obviously contained within the holding cells against their will, populated the cells in this corridor.

However Eland was here on business, ... or rather the possibility of work, and so he simply ignored the beings in the cells and waited by the curve of the corridor for his prospective employer.

A moment later there were three more figures in the hallway, figures that Eland would have sworn were not there a few moments earlier. The two bodyguards, Eland didn't recognize at all, although he recognized the type and unless he missed his guess, they certainly seemed more than competent enough. The center figure however caught his attention, not because he recognized the figure, but seeing the ring on the figure's hand, he knew who the third figure must be. The ring was unique, formed of tiny chains, continuously writhing and moving, it was the symbol of a well known underworld figure in gladius. Called 'The slaver', he was fast becoming a well known personage. It was said that he could change his face and body at will, able to look like anyone and anything, only the ring identified him as who he was, a ruthless figure, fast cutting a path through the underworld of gladius and leaving a path of bodies behind him.

The figure with the ring speaks, "I have a proposition for you, ... I am ... irritated ... by certain elements here in Gladius and I would like you to deal with them. It may require you to find an associate to assist you with the work as it is surely going to be demanding. I will offer four thousand in gold should you complete the work to my satisfaction, to be split between you and your associate, should you find one."

Morro, lying in the holding cells closest to the disscussion had found that from the very front of his cell, and only from there could he hear anything at all, he could actually hear and understand the ongoing discussion. Surprisingly enough, no-one seems to have noticed him yet.

OOC: Ok, Eland is up. Morro is welcome to speak up now ... or he can wait until The Slaver and his pals are gone ... up to you
CrazyArtificer

02-21-08, 08:23 AM
Eland is not someone who likes to talk about his past.

There are really too much bad things which happened to him over his first forty years of life. Still a young person for his race standards he moved to Gladius only recently.

The main reason why he moved there are money. He knows Gladius it’s a rich and wealthy town. Many adventurers lives there and he often dreams about robbing a few of them of their precious magic items.

He smiles when he think about Raegin. What would his brother say? Raised by Pelor priests after Eland’s family was kidnapped and tortured by a drow band he had always tried to convert Eland to the good side of life.

Eland simply refuses to have such an optimistic view of life. He believes that kindness, piety, mercy, and all feelings in general are just signs of weakness.

He likes to meet Raegin from time to time, though. He miss his brother, even if he would never admit it.

Eland ‘s thrive for money is surpassed only by his desire of revenge against the drows. He knows they are still alive, and he made an oath to find and kill them to the last men.

It seems an interesting proposal.
May I ask you who should I "deal" with?

I usually prefer to work on my own. It's a good way to avoid being betrayed, after all.

Eland tried to mantain a feelingless face. He wanted to hide his great joy about those 4k gold pieces.. maybe he could have managed to grab a small increase of that fee.

He also continued to keep an eye on the three figures, just to be sure nothing strange happens.

02-21-08, 09:35 AM
The Slaver listens to Elands questions and replies, "The first and least of my irritations can be found in Duken Marina. There is a boat, the Saucy Mermaid, which is due to arrive tonight. Onboard the boat will be a large cage with a mating pair of griffons. The griffons are a special delivery for someone I know. I would like for those griffons to be dead when they are delivered. Once you have accomplished this, return to this place and we will talk again."

"Regarding an associate, they can be dangerous, but sometimes they are also necessary ... for a time."

The figure with the ring steps back and indicates something to one of his companions. The bodyguard makes a gesture and the three figures disappear without a trace.

02-21-08, 09:59 AM
A meeting is arranged just bearly within earshot. They speak in dwarven. The employer thinks the dwarf will near help. Morro can't help but think this is a trap. But it is the best chance he has seen for escape.

"I have crushed many men in this arena. My axe is strong and my arrows true. If you release me, I'll help you."
CrazyArtificer

02-21-08, 02:45 PM
Eland was still reflecting about the meeting with the Slaver when he heard the other dwarf voice.

With a mixture of surprise and curiosity he gets a bit closer to the cage where Morro is.

Well, how come that you are prisoner in here if you are so powerful? and he couldn't stop a satisfied smile from running on his face..
dulsi

02-21-08, 04:25 PM
"Even the best warriors are caught off guard on occasion. Best not to make light of other's situations. You never know when you might need the strength of others." Morro pauses to look over Eland. "You don't look much older than I was when the insect creatures invalided my home. Watch yourself out there. I suspect your employer has bigger schemes in the works."

Morro sits back down.
CrazyArtificer

02-21-08, 05:09 PM
Your words remember me someone I know.
Eland seems lost in his thoughts for a few seconds then he resumes speaking I really don't care about the schemes of that man, as long as he pays me.
Surely being trapped in a cage isn't something honorable for a dwarf.. I'd like to take you out from there, but first give me a good reason to do that.
dulsi

02-21-08, 05:44 PM
"As long as he pays you? There is more to this world than fame and fortune." Morro stands back up. "Being trapped in a cage does not reduce ones honor. Honor is earned by how one lives. My home has been taken. My body imprisonned. As you can see I have nothing left but my honor. I am Morro Earthshaker. Who are you?"

He stares at the young dwarf.
CrazyArtificer

02-21-08, 06:14 PM
Eland's face stays feelingless, although one may spot a faint sign of compassion in his eyes, quickly suffocated.

You know Morro of the Earthshaker clan? No dwarf should be enclosed like an animal. I'll free you, and maybe we could talk about those griffons to kill.

Eland breaks the lock (scenographic, I hope I can do this ;) ) and grabs Morro hand with his one.

My name is Eland, my clan name is unimportant. It's a pleasure to meet you, Morro

As Morro certainly knows, Eland means "Foe Slayer" in the dwarven race language.
dulsi

02-21-08, 08:37 PM
"My thanks and my axe are yours."

Morro moves to down the hall with surprising speed to another locked room. "Or at least it will be once we recover my axe."

Eland once more breaks the lock.

Morro strolls over to a suit of mithral full plate. As he begins to done the armor, the dwarf comments, "One's clan name is always important. I will not pry into your past but whatever caused you to surrender your name can be undone. I would welcome a chance to help." Pausing to look back at Eland, he asks, "so what is a griffon? Some fearsome beast to fight in the arena no doubt."
CrazyArtificer

02-22-08, 04:25 AM
Let's focus on these griffons for now, Morro.
I don't know exactly how it looks a griffon, but I remember having heard they are some sort of big birds.

Maybe we could visit the Gladius library and find a picture of those beasts, just to be sure we don't kill a hen insted

Elands watches Morro armor with admiration and says

You got a nice piece of armor there...

Eland keeps his Mithral shirt under a black shirt, when outside of the arena.
dulsi

02-22-08, 10:03 AM
"Aye, it is a fine suit of armor. They've been having me craft weapons and armor to sell. After a loss in the arena, they decided I needed better protection." Pausing to adjust a strap, Morro continues, "Craftmanship like this deserves more than being smashed in mock combat."
CrazyArtificer

02-22-08, 10:07 AM
I totally agree with you. It's a really nice job.
But, if you were used to craft armor, I believe you could have crafted mine as well as I'm not the first one to buy from them in Gladius.

Eland opens a bit his shirt, showing the fine mithral armor beneath it.

Do you recognize it?
dulsi

02-22-08, 10:36 AM
"My skill with armor is not at the same level as my father. Mithral has always proved challenging to me. Although I did some mithral shirts before this suit, they were not acceptable quality. Respectable merchants would have reforged them instead of selling shody goods."

Morro looks over Eland's mithral shirt. "No I believe your shirt is better crafted then my earlier attempts."
CrazyArtificer

02-22-08, 10:57 AM
Then I'm not the only one who finds it challenging. I could have crafted this myself, but I really wanted to be sure it was of good quality.

My last armor was.. well.. not as good as I wanted it to be.

Is your father a famous smith?

Well.. better tell me more about him while we walk towards Arkadivius (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=13258897&postcount=3). I bet we can find someone who knows what Griffons are there.

@OOC (dulsi): no worries regarding Morro's slaver masters ... not a concern.

Eland has a little trouble breaking the lock on Morro's cage, but with his warax and a bit of leverage he manages to do so.

After locating Morro's equipment, the duo head out in the midday sun. Deciding to try and find out something about Griffons before they have to engage them themselves, the pair head off to visit the libraries of Arkadivius. As they enter the library, they are met by an old librarian who views them with the suspicion that academic's always view non-academics with ... as if he is somewhat concerned that they might damage his precious books. However the old librarian does help them find a book with a couple of pictures of a griffon and a small caption at the bottom that reads ...

"Griffons are powerful, majestic creatures with the characteristics of both lions and eagles. From nose to tail, an adult griffon can measure as much as 8 feet. Neither males nor females are endowed with a mane. A pair of broad, golden wings emerge from the creature’s back and span 25 feet or more. A griffon weighs about 500 pounds.
A griffon cannot speak, but understands Common.

Griffons prefer to pounce on their prey, either diving to the attack or leaping from above.

Although intelligent, a griffon requires training before it can bear a rider in combat. To be trained, a griffon must have a friendly attitude toward the trainer which can be achieved through successful Diplomacy."

It is late afternoon when Eland and Morro emerge from the library. They realize that they had better hurry if they are to make it to Duken Marina in time to catch the boat.
CrazyArtificer

02-22-08, 01:52 PM
It seems that as long as they are closed in their cages those beasts won't be much of a problem. I hope that they don't get free, though.

Eland quickly moves along the streets, almost running to reach Duken Marina on time.

02-22-08, 01:59 PM
"Mordomar was famous in my eyes. The Earthshaker clan lived far beneath the mountains so it is doubtful surface dwellers have heard of him. Unfortunately our home was invaded by ant-like creatures. I was sent to the surface passsages to look after the young. I do not know entirely what happened below. I can only assume they must have kept comming until they overran my kin. Someone collapsed the passway to save us from the same fate." Morro walks silently for a bit.
CrazyArtificer

02-22-08, 02:59 PM
A sad story, indeed.
I could tell you about a very similar one, but we got much more important issues right now.

Eland seemed very angry all at once.
He kept walking fast, with his fists closed and the knuckles red from the force he was applying.

His face had a sinister look, the one you could see on the face of your worst nightmare.

CrazyArtificer

02-22-08, 06:18 PM
Eland would like to keep some distance from the ship and take note of how many people is on board, dimension, whatever useful.

The ship is fully crewed with perhaps seventy or eighty sailors on board, and between them and the dock hands who are busy unloading the ship, Eland quickly determines that there is no way to approach the ship without being seen.

However from his vantage point in the marina, he and Morro both notice the large cage on the deck and the two creatures inside that look exactly like the picture they saw earlier in the book. They also notice that one of the people on board seems to be dressed a little different from all the other sailors, and he seems to be waiting close to the cage.

After a while darkness falls and the sailors and dock hands all depart the area, leaving the single person sitting by the cage. Eland and Morro both realize this is more than a little strange, but are willing to take whatever advantage avails.

Ok, This is the best chance to act that you've seen so far ...
CrazyArtificer

02-25-08, 04:47 PM
Eland draws a thunderstone and his bow, then he moves towards the ship hidden and moving silently..
dulsi

02-25-08, 10:21 PM
Morro also draws his bow. He lets Eland get a little farther ahead before moving. If need be he thinks he can catch up easily enough.
Stormwind

02-27-08, 05:05 PM
Eland gets to within 70ft of the cage when the griffons begin to screech and he is noticed by the handler standing by the cage. Morro is about 50ft behind Eland. The handler swears and moves to the cage door before opening it. One of the Griffons flies to the door and pushes it open.

Initiative: Griffon (female)
Eland
Morro
Griffon (male)

OOC: Ok, Eland and Morro are up ...
At the moment you guys have a clear line of sight.
dulsi

02-27-08, 08:55 PM
How big is the cage door? Morro thinks it would be good to keep them confined to the cage if possible. He can reach it with a run.
Stormwind

02-28-08, 01:56 AM
The cage door is large. (The cage is designed for large creatures).

Just a quick warning: I may not be able to post during the next day or two.
CrazyArtificer

02-28-08, 03:45 AM
Eland fires an arrow to the griffon flying, drops the bow and draws the shield.
dulsi

02-28-08, 11:36 AM
Can I effectively block the cage entrance if I run up? Would both griffon be able to attack me? What if I stopped 5 feet before the cage? They would have to squeeze by to leave correct?

Although I'm not keen on getting smacked around that much. Keeping them contained and possibly fighting one at a time is very tempting.
Stormwind

02-28-08, 04:35 PM
You can't block the entrance unless you are large yourself. However you can stand in the doorway and force them to squeeze to get past you ... of course if you do that then both the griffons will be able to attack you.
dulsi

02-28-08, 05:48 PM
Morro races forward stopping just short of the creatures bite.

Put myself in the way of a charge on Eland. Stay 5 feet back to not provoke AoO and prevents a charge on me. Hopefully he will need to move by me to leave the cage. Armor spikes can be used for such an AoO.
Stormwind

03-03-08, 04:35 PM
Ok, sorry about the slow start here guys, but we should be able to proceed normally now

Round 1
Griffon ...
Eland fires an arrow to the griffon flying [attack: 22 (hit); damage: 10], drops the bow and draws the shield. (Eland is 70ft from the first griffon)
Morro runs forward, interposing himself between Eland and the female Griffon. (Morro's is 5ft from the cage and the first griffon)
The other Griffon moves up just behind the first Griffon. (only one griffon can get through the door at once)

Griffon (female): ??-10 HP, AC ??
Eland: 32/32 HP, AC 19
Morro: 47/47 HP, AC 21
Griffon (male): ?? HP, AC ??

Round 2 (partial)
The female Griffon makes an angry screech and flies out of the cage, provoking an opportunity for Morro to attack [attack: 21 20 (hit); damage: 13 9 (Edited due to armor spikes rather than warax)] before she circles upwards, gaining height in obvious preparation for a dive.
Eland ...
Morro ...
Male Griffon ...
dulsi

03-03-08, 04:49 PM
(Morro's speed is 20ft so he can only run 80ft ... that means that he is now 40ft from the cage and the first griffon)

Morro's speed is 30ft so he can get to the griffon if he wanted. His mithral full plate counts as medium armor so he gets his +10 from barbarian. I assume my getting to 5 feet from him may alter the griffon actions. (Or maybe get an AoO if he goes by.)
Stormwind

03-03-08, 05:26 PM
Good point ... I missed that, It won't change the griffons actions ... but you will get the AoO - adding it in now Added
CrazyArtificer

03-03-08, 07:04 PM
Eland runs closer to Morro, drawing the Axe. Eland wants to force an AoO from him or Morro once the Griffon dives.
dulsi

03-03-08, 10:55 PM
13 damage? I suppose I should mention I only have my armor spikes to attack with since I have the bow in hand.

CA you can't run and draw the axe unfortunately. Drawing a weapon is a free action with regular move not a run. Probably should keep your AC up and not run. Not sure if there is anywhere you can move to avoid a charge.

Morro walks into the cage stoping 5 feet from the male and fires an arrow (with point blank shot).

EDIT: Wonder if I should have suggested readying with a tanglefoot bag. Oh well.
Stormwind

03-04-08, 09:11 AM
@dulsi: damage adjusted to account for armor spikes.
@CrazyArtificer: Given dulsi's comment above I've simply double moved and drawn his axe for Eland. I'll let you change your action back to a run action if you wish.

Round 2
Female Griffon ...
Eland moves closer to Morro drawing his axe as he goes. He then readies agains the griffon's attack (Eland is 50ft from the outside of the cage)
Morro walks into the cage stoping 5 feet from the male and fires an arrow at point blank range. [attack: 16 (miss)] (Morro's is 5ft inside the cage and 5ft from the male griffon)
Seeing a foe standing between it and freedom, the male griffon screeches defiantly and steps forward to attack, giving the dwarf a minor bite but missing with it's claws [attack: 26(hit), 20(miss), 20(miss); damage: 7]

Griffon (female): ??-19 HP, AC ??
Eland: 32/32 HP, AC 19
Morro: 40/47 HP, AC 21
Griffon (male): ?? HP, AC ??

Round 3 (partial)
The female Griffon, having gained height, dives down upon Eland, triggering Eland's readied action.
Eland strikes even as he himself is attacked [attack: 16(hit); damage: 6]
The female Griffon, completes its dive upon Eland, claws extended [attack: 24(hit), 12(miss), 19(hit), 21(hit), 11(miss); damage: 13, 6, 5]
Morro ...
Male Griffon ...

Note: Eland is down to 8hp after the dive attack
dulsi

03-04-08, 12:47 PM
My current thought is that if Eland moves, Morro could 5 foot step and use rapid shot at point blank to the female griffon. Unfortunately even if Eland gets a hit in I don't think it will be enough to take it down. (All the while Morro will be complaining about the "kid" getting himself killed.) Don't suppose you have any ideas CA?
CrazyArtificer

03-04-08, 02:32 PM
Sorry, I didn't manage to post earlier. If Eland must take a dive on his own, he'd rather ready against the charge. He will single move and ready in round 2.

Then, in round 3, move and stay in total defense to approach Morro. Remember that Tumble gives bonuses to total defense action
Stormwind

03-05-08, 03:52 PM
@Crazy: Previous round actions edited. Note that you can't move and take total defense as total defense is a full round action (unless you just take a 5ft step). Also if you move out of the griffons reach, you will draw an AoO unless you use the withdraw action (or take a 5ft step).

Round 3
Eland ...
Female Griffon ...
Morro takes a step towards the door of the cage 5 feet away and rapid fires at the female griffon. [attack: 17 (hit), 20(hit); damage: 11, 10] (Morro's is standing at the door of the cage and 5ft from the male griffon)
Seeing a foe still standing between it and freedom, the male griffon screeches defiantly and steps forward to attack, slicing the dwarf with a talon [attack: 13(miss), 22(hit), 17(miss); damage: 4]

Griffon (female): ??-46 HP, AC ??
Eland: 8/32 HP, AC 19
Morro: 36/47 HP, AC 21
Griffon (male): ?? HP, AC ??

Round 4 (partial)
Eland ...
The female Griffon ...

The ready in round 2 activates in round 3 when the griffon charges so you can't do any actions in round 3. Assuming she flew as high as she could and you readied a move for when she is 10 feet away, she might run out of movement before reaching you.

Eland changes to total defense and then moves towards Morro, provoking an attack of opportunity as he moves away [AoO: 20 (miss)] (Eland is 25ft from Morro)
Female Griffon flies up into the air and circles, again preparing for a dive.
Morro take a step out of the cage and again rapid fires at the female griffon, but this time his arrows miss. [attack: 16 (miss), 8(miss)] (Morro's is standing 5ft outside the door of the cage and 5ft from the male griffon)

However, given he is quite wounded, he wants also to heal himself.
Spend one round drawing a potion+total defense.

Then try to attack the beasts fighting on the defensive (-4 attack, +3 AC thanks to tumble)
Dodge vs female.

Female Griffon dives upon Eland, claws extended but in vain [attack: 18(miss), 11(miss), 17(miss), 19(miss), 13(miss)]
Morro take another step out of the cage and again rapid fires at the female griffon, and this time his arrows hit the target. [attack: 18(hit), 18(hit); damage 5, 6] (Morro's is standing 10ft outside the door of the cage and 5ft from the male griffon)

After finishing off the second griffon, Morro looks around. See no one around, he puts away his weapons. "Well young one, it looks like your skills could use some honing."

He pours another potion down Eland's throat. Eland beginings coughing as he awaken.

"Welcome back. Not quite time for you see the great forge. Come gather your things. Best to not dally here."
CrazyArtificer

03-07-08, 01:21 PM
Eland coughs and slowly open his eyes. Morro's voice bring him back to the important matters.

Pretty ashamed for his poor performance in his fight Eland has lost much of his arrogance, for a while at least.
Well.. ehmm.. thanks for killing those 2 things and taking care of me.
He draws a potion and offers it to Morro.
I hope that we are even this way. Guess it's time to go back and claim our money.. I'd like to get some rest and get healed though.

"Best to worry about your health first and your money second."

About healing: It's my understanding that you aren't restored to full health between quest encounters. Are we going to me able to get some healing?
Stormwind

03-07-08, 03:39 PM
Don't worry about healing between fights. As long as you're still alive, the healing between fights will be taken care of by 'The Slaver' ... after all he has a vested interest in his pawns ... as long as they are still useful to him

Eland and Morro limp across town and back to the dark corridors under the arena. The corridor's are silent and empty but as they walk the dark, damp corridors a cold shudder wracks Morro as they wander past what used to be his cell.
Then Morro stops, noticing something in his old cell ... something that wasn't there before ... something wrapped in a piece of parchment.

As Morro takes the rolled parchment he notices that it is addressed to Eland. Within the parchment is a couple of small vials, most likely potions of some sort. Morro passes the parchment to Eland who opens it to read:

Good work,
The second task I have for you is to take care of the four guards that patrol the arena and the corridors that lie beneath it. Your companion should at least be able to recognize them.
I have provided you with two potions to heal your wounds (and those of your companion) before you embark on this task.

Once you have completed this second task, return here and I will give you your final task.

Slaver
dulsi

03-08-08, 06:46 PM
"Hmm.... What do you know of your employer Slaver? Is he watching our progress or simply leaving the note on the assumption we will find it or be dead?" Morro pauses. "He does not seem like someone to leave a note with his name on it."

Morro looks over the potions. He looks back at his supply of healing potions. He doesn't have enough to heal both of them. He opens one of the bottle and sniffs. Morro downs the potion.

About the guards do they patrol together? Do we know their patrol route? How are they armed? Race? Do they carry light, patrol light corridors, or have dark/lowlight vision?
Stormwind

03-09-08, 08:31 AM
Eland know very little of his employer. The Slaver is a somewhat mysterious figure in the Gladius underworld, however given what Eland has heard of the Slaver, it seems fairly likely that he would be watching (or having someone else watching) and it also seems equally unlikely that he would leave any evidence around.

Sure enough, moments after Eland has read the parchment, it ignites. Eland reflexively drops the burning paper and within moments it is gone, leaving nothing but ashes behind.

After examining the potions, Morro drinks one of them and his wounds close completely, leaving him restored to full health. (Some sort of healing potion - Morro restored to 47/47hp)

As Morro contemplate the guards, he thinks about what he knows of them. The guards he has seen are Orc's and they normally wear studded leather armor and carry greataxe's. Being orc's they aren't keen on bright lights, but then again, they can see just as well in the dark as he can. He is not sure of their patrol routes, although they do come down here, past what used to be his cell, at least a couple of times a night. The guards normally patrol alone, but as soon as one of them sounds the alert, the others will converge on the same place.
CrazyArtificer

03-09-08, 08:39 PM
Not much Morro, not much at all.
As far as I've been told, the Slaver is one guy who takes part in many of the most obscure events which happen in Gladius.

He is someone who rarely trust people, so I think its possible we are being followed by some of his agents.

Eland drinks the potion as well, then resumes speaking with Morro.
I honestly don't like his way to do business. We agreed on a single issue, and now I have to kill these guards. They are orcs, so it's not a big deal, but I wonder if the final task will be so easy.
Also, I'd keep the eyes open, just in case someone of his agents wants to save his master a few thousands gp.

Sorry guys, I just had a really busy week. I'll try to post more often this week.
Stormwind

03-10-08, 06:43 AM
Ok, I need to know your plan of action. Right now you are both in Morro's old cell, you are both at full health, and both Morro and Eland think they can hear footsteps further down the corridor (you have a few rounds to prepare or hide).

Edit: If you guys come up with some sort of tactics, then I'll run multiple rounds of the fight at once until I come up with a situation that isn't covered by tactics ... it should speed things up so that we can have the second fight finished before pairings. Then we can take our time with the last fight (you might need the time for the last fight ;))
CrazyArtificer

03-10-08, 06:54 AM
If people is coming down the corridor, I'd simply hide and be ready to bash them. Bow seems a good choice, and we could choose each one side of the room.

Standing inside a cage would also prevent unwanted melee.

what do you think?
Stormwind

03-10-08, 07:00 AM
Remember that the door of the cage is broken, so it would only delay your opponent(s).
dulsi

03-10-08, 11:47 AM
"Actually your employer said that was the first task and to come back here afterward. You need to listen more carefully to the deals you agree to," whispers Morro.

I'd like to find some place we can hide and hit a guard quickly with surprise. Preferably flank him. Assume we can take him before he make too much noise, stuff him in Morro's cell and repeat. I generally think it is easily to keep him from running and alerting the other guards by meleeing the first. If the other three end up alerted and moving in ranged makes sense.
CrazyArtificer

03-10-08, 12:10 PM
Are you sure? Well, those 4k gp must have distracted me, smiles Eland.

Yes, your idea is actually better. So, Eland will TWF on one side, Morro on the other, I'd say.
Then, if they come down all at once we'll switch to ranged.

Eland and Morro drag the body of the guard into Morro's old cell and then resume waiting, however after a while it seems that no one is coming this way. Listening carefully, the pair can make out the faint sounds of deep rough voices speaking in low tones. Eland can identify the language as orcish, but it is too far to make out what they are speaking about, they can barely make out one or two words out of ten.
The two dwarves carefully creep closer and find three guards sitting around a table, gambling.

The three guards are currently all sitting in a room. There is only one door and you guys are both standing against the wall behind the door. It is about 30ft from the doorway to the table where the three guards are. One of the guards is sitting with his back to you and the other two are sitting facing each other.

Then he looks Morro with an interrogative expression

Morro thinks for a moment. He pulls out a bag of caltrops. He pretends to poor them on the floor. He points to the two of them and away from the door. Then puts his hands next to mouth like he's yelling.

Drop the caltrops in front of the door. Moves farther away. Make some noise for the guards then shoot them when they come to investigate. (I'm not 100% attached to this idea so feel free so if you want to go with your plan I'm fine with that too.)

Guard II moves up to the doorway, and being a more impulsive sort he continues moving through the caltrops [attack:13(hit), damage: 1 + half speed] but due to his foot wounds, he is too slow to base Eland
Eland shoots the guard closest to him [attack: 25(hit); damage: 7] and moves back.

With the three guards dead, the two dwarves dragged the bodies back into the guardhouse and then returned to Morro's old cell.

There on the bed was another scroll of parchment with Eland's name on it, and the body of the other guard that they had placed here was gone.

When Eland opens the scroll, it reads as follows:Good work,
The final task I have for you is to take care of my opposition's overseer.
You will most likely find it by the slave pens closest to the arena entrance. There were a new batch of slave in today and I have it on good authority that the overseer is sorting them out, determining which ones might be of use in the arena.
I want the overseer dead before morning.

Once you have completed this final task, return here and I will give you your reward.

Slaver

Morro has only seen this overseer once before. When he himself arrived in the arena. It was a humanoid creature, but it was covered in chains.
CrazyArtificer

03-14-08, 11:31 AM
So.. we now need to kill another guy. Do you know anything about him?

We simply cannot kill him in front of all that people.. we should find a trick for luring him out, I believe.
dulsi

03-14-08, 11:53 AM
"The overseer I saw once was humanoid but covered in chains. If I had to guess that is probably the one the Slaver wants dead. Are most slaves captured or some sentenced to slavery? We should free those who have been wrongfully imprisoned. As an added benefit it will give multiple suspects for the death of the overseer."
CrazyArtificer

03-14-08, 01:46 PM
Well, I'm not sure how the Slaver handles his business, nor I care about the lives of those weaklings..

However it could create some havoc to release them and after all is not a bad idea. I propose we go out scouting to see how the situation looks like

Stormwind

03-16-08, 07:18 AM
The two dwarves move out and as they ascend the dark corridors to the surface, they pass by a passage into the arena itself. Along the passage, they can barely make out a figure striding through the center of the arena floor ... a figure covered in chains.

Apart from the lone figure, the arena is empty at this time.

Standard arena map. Opponent is in the center, you are both just off the map to the east.
dulsi

03-16-08, 10:18 PM
Eland hides behind the northern pillar by starting area 4. Morro moves to the rock above. Start rapid shooting. When opponent moves in Eland sneak attacks with bow then switches to two weapon fighting. We move in and flank so that Eland gets sneak attack.

@CA: Any ideas? I'm open to other plans of attack. I'm not really sure what to expect from a guy covered in chains. I imagine he will try tripping but I'm not sure what to do to conteract that (other than the dwarf stability and hope). You still have a tanglefoot if we want to try to stick him to the ground.

I just hope it's not a kyton.
Your plan is good otherwise, but if he is we are in deep troubles.

What's a kyton? (Looks on d20srd.org.) Your killing me here CA. How does Eland not have a silver weapon? Assuming it is and Morro notices the arrows not working or being healed, he'll switch to silver arrows. Yell out normal arrows not working to alert Eland. After finding out Eland doesn't have silver weapons move and give him my silver axe. I guess I'll fire into melee unless CA has a better idea (or would prefer the silver arrows instead).

Edit: Actually the more I think about it, I should probably keep the axe and we should flank him and hope your sneak attack gets you through the DR.
CrazyArtificer

03-17-08, 10:29 AM
Well, that's the Chain Devil guy.
Eland doesn't have any silver weapon because I thought it wasn't needed at low levels fights.

I will learn to buy some the hard way, it seems :)

By the way, I also think we should flank with the axe. the problem is that this guy will make 4 attacks/round as a standard action.

Let's hope to bring it down fast or get ready to run away

I followed your tactics and moved in to melee to flank, but unfortunately there's not much you can do against 4 5 crits within 2 3 rounds ... :(

Let me know if there's anything wrong ...

Edit: Ok, added the shield and dodge which gave Morro another round but he went down to another crit ... the dice were really against you guys on this one :(

Dice were unkind. Well, Morro has dodge as well and I'd take out his shield the round after drawing the axe. But I think only one attack misses so that probably only buys him a round before going down.

Edited previous post. It gave you guys one more round, but then the dice gods showered more love on the kyton.

You were fairly close to taking it out anyway, even with Eland not having a silver weapon. If Eland would have had a silver weapon you guys would have won this one.

Well, Eland will buy a silver weapon after this battle :)

Thanks to the pitlord for the quest and to dulsi for being a very nice roleplayer. Now Eland and Morro have a common objective (free themselves) and will probably quest together again, if you agree.

Guess we try again next level. Thanks for the run.

Sure, I'd be more than happy to run another quest for you guys to free yourselves if you want ... just let me know when - and we can hope for some better luck then :D

Question: what happens to rewards now? Do we get experience for the first 2 fights we did?

According to Telin, for failed quests whatever we used is gone obviously and no experience or gold is earned.

As far as I know, if you fail a quest, you get no rewards at all. I think that's a bit harsh but as far as I can tell that's the rules ....
