Character Background

An outcast of his own society because of his many "non-dwarf" affinities, Daeren has always sought out a place in his life where he felt he belonged. While he was born into a barbaric culture, when he first tasted civilization, and especially reading, he just couldn't get enough of it.

He found that while reading, his dwarven beard would get in the way, so he trimmed it frequently (much to the abhorrance of the dwarves who saw him), and he frequently went without meals while he read, so his somewhat tall dwarven body has slimmed down considerably.

Daeren still appreciates drinking and fighting, but his heart has found a love in magic. That magic has helped him in many ways improve his fighting - so to him it is a symbiotic relationship. However, he still faces shunning from his own people. He hopes that success in the arena will prove to his own people that, although an outcast, he is still a dwarf at heart.

The Dragon Wars were nearly at an end, in no little part due to the efforts of Thallin Gureson, Dragonslayer Gury to the common folk. The smoke still drifted from the ruins of the Dwarven city of Karl'zun; the dragons last ditch attempt to break the spirit of the dwarves, and capture the legendary Spear of Fangs.

Unfortunately for the Dragons, Thallin Guerson set out to slay the mighty green dragon Chikiko only days before the last assualt, and was not in the city.

Thallin returned weeks later, bruised, bloodied, but victorious. The Spear of Fangs held loosely in his hand as he approached the city, grimly staring at the ruins, and hoping to find some sign of survivors.

**************************************** ******************************

"History tells us that the Spear of Fangs was lost long ago at the end of the Dragon Wars. Many credit the green wyrm Chikiki with breaking the spear upon the bones of Dragonslayer Gury." the slight gnome historian lectured towards Daeran. "However I believe that Thallin Gureson did return to Karl'zun, sometime after it's destruction. Based on these reports I unearthed at an excavation site that is supposedly located only 30 miles from the location of Karl'zun, I believe that the figure that was last seen a top the ruins of Karl'zun was Thallin."

He harumps a bit to clear his throat, "You understand that this is not 'accepted' scholarly thought though." he takes a sip of ale, and continues, "I believe that this map will lead you to the entrance to Karl'zun...or at least close enough that a dwarf of your stature can find it from there."

He hands Daeran a map, and then finishes, "You can leave my fee with the Adventurer's Guild a the front desk. I would appreciate it if you have the time, if you could bring back any tomes you find. It would be considered one of the biggest finds of the last two thousand years."

Daeren reads over the map carefully and thoughtfully.

So the Spear of Fangs is still around, eh? My father used to tell me stories about it and of course the Dragon Wars - but he had always told me what history has been recorded as saying - that it was destroyed.

Daeren spends a moment to remember his father and his childhood. Shortly, he comes back to the present time.

This is excellent news historian - excellent. I'll be sure to bring back anything I can find that would be of use to you. Perhaps that will cover the costs of this expedition after all...

I'll be back soon. Come Awk.

Awk alights upon Daeren's shoulder as he sets foot out of the door. A smile on Daeren's face betrays his excitement about the journey before him.

Daeran reaches the excavation site after some easy travel over roads and through some small villages. The mountains loom closer and closer, until they threaten to clutch the sky in their grasp. For the outcast dwarf, this is oddly comforting.

The map leads the dwarf to the excavation camp. There are five tents, over varying sizes circled around a thirty foot in diameter circle, where the actual excavation is obviously taking place. from Daeren's vantage point he can see three or four figures scurrying around the camp. He's not close enough to pick out details yet.

11-16-05, 02:35 PM
I guess I should've asked if the excavation was ongoing... oh well - hindsight is 20/20...

Daeren sees the individuals scurrying about the encampment and proceeds. Along the way, he'll note the presence of easy cover spots and the exact directions each one is heading. He also tries to get an exact count of the individuals.

If they have not presented any hostile action, by the time he can comfortably hail them, he will introduce himself and ask them if he can join them. If they are goblinoids/orcs - he's not likely to trust them (and just being of those races constitutes a semi-hostile action...). If they do present a hostile action, he will move to the closest cover.

The countryside is about what Daeran expected this close to such a mountain range. Rolling hills, with scrub brush covering much of the landscape. There is an obvious path, a wagon path from the looks of the parallel ruts carved in to it that leads towards the camp.

Daeran closes within about 60 feet of the camp and can clearly make out 2 dwarves and a human working around the edge of the excavation site. About that time he hears a voice yell towards him.

"Hello wanderer! What brings you out this far?" Daeran can see that there is a man standing about 65-70 feet to the right of his position, holding a longbow with an arrow knocked, but not drawn yet.

At the yell the other workers look up and towards the yeller, clearly a bit surprised, but not frightened.
TelinArtho

11-16-05, 03:04 PM
I am Daeren Stronghammer. I have come here on information given to me by a gnomish historian who has claimed some knowledge of this excavation.

I was under the impression that I would be the only one here. So excuse me if I have surprised you.

Daeren makes no move towards any weapon, but he does pick out a location of cover in case the man with the bow decides his explanation isn't good enough.

Perhaps we are in search of the same thing - for what are you digging here?
Myrridin

11-16-05, 04:11 PM
The man considers for a moment, "Everyone left, except us. Two nights ago we accidently broke through a hard clay covering, and one of our men fell in to a small burial chamber. We're excavating it now."

He lowers his bow, and returns the arrow to his quiver. He walks towards the camp, and motions for you to follow him.

"I don't suppose you know how to read ancient languages, do you? Since our historian left, we're a bit in the dark about what we've found." he finishes up as he reaches the base of the first tent.

"Name's Tillan." he says as he sticks out a work roughened hand in your direction.
TelinArtho

11-16-05, 04:29 PM
Daeren takes the offered hand. Well met. I have to admit, I was a bit concerned that you all were grave robbers or something.

I'm not too familiar with the ancient languages, though I have a smattering of other languages to draw from - perhaps I can get something out of it. Let's have a look-see.

Daeren is still a little wary of them, but is a little more comfortable now that the bow has been lowered. Still, he takes careful note of what weapons (if any) are around if they decide to make a fuss. He also, takes a careful inventory in his mind of which one is likely the strongest - in case he needs to call upon his magic to help him out.

Assuming Tillan brings him to the "ancient language" texts to which he was referring, Daeren will try to ascertain if they are magical (spellcraft) and if he gets any sort of indication that it is, he'll cast Read Magic. He'll also cast Detect Magic when he is done (both to sense it in the area and on his new friends). It appears I don't have them memorized. I guess the spellcraft/knowledge-arcana will have to do
Myrridin

11-16-05, 05:01 PM
Daeran looks around and doesn't see much in the way of weapons. Mostly what you'd expect from archeologists, picks, shovels, torches for light.

Tillan ducks in to one of the tents, and you hear a small grunt from inside. He walks out carrying a large clay tablet, "This is one that we pried loose from the wall. It was hanging next to a sarcophagus."

Daeran studies the tablet on the ground in front of him. He can make out enough of it to realize that it's not an arcane script, and in fact appears to be a dwarven dialect; though one that hasn't been used for a long time. (I'm giving you an Int check to see what you can make out, since you do read/write Dwarven)Int Check: 10+3=13 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#162 962)

Daeran can make out that this was the tomb of an important person; and that he was buried in the village that used to stand on this spot. But that's about it. There is a reference to some catastrophe, but that's all you can understand.

Tillan looks at you, and you see him looking at the countryside, almost speculatively, "Not sure why no one's settled here, it's good land. I'm considering moving out here, maybe towards those mountains and doing a little prospecting, when I'm done here."
TelinArtho

11-16-05, 09:18 PM
This is interesting, though like you, I understand little of its meaning. It seems that this was the burial chamber of an important individual - perhaps even the chamber of the individual for whom I am looking.

Have you investigated the catacombs completely? Or is there more?

Daeren offers his services to investigate the complex of the catacombs - though on two conditions - that he be able to keep the object for which he is searching - no questions asked; and then for any texts to be found, he will take them to the historian he had met and deliver them promptly.

In other words - you get to keep the rest and you get the honor of documenting this fantastic find.

So what do you say? Deal?
Myrridin

11-17-05, 09:07 AM
The man looks at him and says, "What are you looking for? I mean, we welcome your help, but we must be allowed to catalogue any finds." He says this in a well-meaning manner.

"We weren't planning on going back in to the catacombs, as all we've been able to find is the one sarchopogus. Falling rock has fully blocked off the only exit out of there. You're welcome to look around, but we figure to be busy trying to decipher and catalog all of what we've found." He finishes and then grabs his wine pouch from his side. He takes a long pull, and offers it to you, ""Gets mighty dry out here, what with the wind and such."

You notice that the sun is sinking towards the horizon, and that the temperature is dropping with it. Nothing too cold, just putting a chill in the air.
TelinArtho

11-17-05, 12:27 PM
Daeren declines the wine respectfully.

Well, what I'm searching for may or may not even exist anymore. You'd think I was crazy if you had even heard of it...

But I suppose there's no harm. I'm searching for the Spear of Fangs.

If you've already done your full exploration, I'll take a look myself. Mind if I borrow a lantern so I can get a quick look tonight?

I didn't bring any sort of lighting, but if you'll allow me to retroactively purchase Sunrods for this quest, I'd be fine with that too. If it is simply too dark to get anywhere - Daeren will wait until morning.
Myrridin

11-17-05, 01:22 PM
"The Spear of Fangs? I seem to remember a legend about that, my daddy told me. Wasn't it lost years ago at the end of the Dragon Wars?" The man smiles at you a bit, "We're historians out here, digging in the dirt...we don't find too much strange any more."

The man hands you a lantern that was hanging from a nearby post, "Take all the time you need, we're just gonna start cooking some dinner."

You can see a wooden ladder that leads down in to a hole, from where they broke through the ground. There are two torches stuck in to the ground next to the ladder, shedding a decent amount of light on the surrounding ground.

You're welcome to retroactively buy sunrods, or you can just stick with the lantern. Your call
TelinArtho

11-17-05, 06:01 PM
I'll stick with the lantern - and pay for it later I'm sure :)

I'll be back soon.

Daeren takes the lantern and proceeds down the ladder, stopping about halfway down so he can get a bird's eye view of the area beneath him (unless it is just a hole to the bottom - then he just keeps going).
Myrridin

11-18-05, 09:35 AM
Daeren climbs part of the way down the ladder, and sees a fairly small room which the excavators obviously haven't had as much time to work on as they would've liked.
The crypt (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d21/Myrridin/Crypt2.jpg)

I've updated the map. Really just made it bigger, it shouldn't have any effect on what's going on down there.

He can easily see the area that crumbled in long ago, making this a small room only, instead of leading to a larger area.

There are more of the tablets in the chamber, as well as carvings that line the walls. Daeren will have to get closer to actually be able to make out the carvings, as they've faded a bit over time.
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 09:39 AM
Daeren descends the rest of the way and makes his way around the room, inspecting for anything that would make sense to him (both in terms of legible and readable text, also searching for secret doors). After going around the room, he examines the crumbled areas and tries to assess (with stonecunning) how much effort it would take to remove the rubble from the path enough to continue on into other portions of the crypt.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 09:51 AM
Daeran slowly makes his way around the room, noticing that the first things cleared were anything that was on the ground, leaving the floor smooth.

He spends a few minutes examining the fallen stone, but fears that it's beyond his meager ability as a stonemason to figure out how to move it. 9+2=11 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 020)

He straigthens up, feeling that was a bit useless, when his lantern shines on a small, partially destroyed carving on the wall. It shows what appears to be a tall dwarf...maybe a small human, battleing a winged foe. The item that he holds in his hand is more than a little interesting, it's a spear, glowing brightly around the head. Unfortunately the nature of the foe is destroyed, as is the lower half of the figure. Daeren can make out wings, but that's it.

Daeren's head turns with a jerk, as he hears a small noise back from near the stairs...in the crypt with him! 7+13=20 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 021)

He seems a stream of greenish smoke ooze from the corner of the crypt, and begin to pile up near the foot of the stairs.

Note: The Blue is Daeren, and the Green is whatever is forming in the corner of the crypt. Your action.
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 10:01 AM
What manner of wickedry is this? Awk, best be gettin' to hiding. Not sure that you can handle this one.

Daeren draws a scroll from his belt case and reads it quickly.

Draw and cast Shield (CL2) from the scroll.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 10:17 AM
The...human? coallesces into shape at the bottom of the stairs. It's eyes burn red in its head as it hisses at you, "Fresh blood...it has been so long since I've been woken from my sleep." It holds a bastard sword in its hand, obviously having pulled it from the sarcophogus with it. The armor the creature wears was finely made at some point, but the years have eroded it, reducing its protection. Still, the creature looks like it knows how to fight.

Initiative:
Daeren: 19+3=22 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 022)
Creature: 17+6=23 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 023)

The creature draws and drinks a potion with its free hand, and then places said hand on the hilt of the sword.

"Come to me mortal, the last of your kind that I tasted was millenia ago."

Drawing/drinking the potion was its action for this round, it's now your turn.
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 10:35 AM
I don't know what you are - but you clearly aren't supposed to be here. Begone foul creature!

Daeren pulls a furry ball out of his Bag on his belt and tosses it in between himself and his new foe. The creature that grows from the ball swiftly forms and attacks.

Daeren then draws another scroll.

Tan Bag of Tricks - please roll high so I can get a rhino... The new scroll being drawn is for Alter Self.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 10:55 AM
Daeran throws a furry ball on to the floor with a *plop* noise, and watches as a Brown Bear appears. 18 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 024)

The creature moves past the bear, provoking an attack of opportunity (Bear AoO: 2+11=13 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 027)) But it is obviously disoriented by the summoning, and misses badly.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d21/Myrridin/Crypt2Rnd2.jpg

Daeren can smell the fetid breath of the creature as it attempts to kill the living morsel before it. "Ever since your liege destroyed my master, I have been trapped in this tomb."
Attack: 16+8=24 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 028)

Daeren gasps in pain as the bastard sword bites in to his side. (Damage: 9+3=12 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 029)) The creature's red eyes grow wider, and his mouth pulls back to reveal fangs at the smell of your blood.

Daeren - 48/60 hp, Shield [Rnd 21]
Brown Bear - 51/51
Undead Creature - ??/??, potion

Your Round 2 action.
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 11:21 AM
Daeren takes a step back from the creature and casts the spell from the scroll, suddenly assuming the shape and form of a lizard man. He then draws his waraxe and growls in Dwarven:

That is the last mistake you will make! Feel my fury.

Cast Alter Self and change into a Lizard Man (+5 nat AC). Draw Waraxe. Don't rage quite yet... The bear should follow the vampire around the back side of the coffin, since that is the easiest route. Hopefully this will set up nicely for flanking.

"Your blood will still taste just as sweet, no matter your form." the creature growls as your bear takes a swipe at it from behind. (Bear Attack: 13+11=24 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 042)) It's claw swipes across the back of the spawn. (Damage:5+8-5=8 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 047)) The bear attempts to pull the spawn to it, crushing it in its embrace. (Bear Grapple check: 18+16=34 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 051) Spawn's check: 5+7=12 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 052))

The spawn is pulled into the bear's embrace, and screams in rage at being denied it's meal. It attempts to break free from the grapple. (Opposed Grapple: 10+7=17 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 053); Bear Grapple: 15+16=31 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 054))

But it fails to free itself from the embrace of the bear. Daeren sees saliva fly from its mouth as it tries to break free. He also sees the wounds on the creature start to close up, like watching a flower unwind in fast forward.

Daeren is appaled to see the creature healing before him. However, since it is currently grappling with the bear, he moves in to strike.

Grantis - guide my axe to cleave this creature!

Grantis is a dwarven god of Justice - Daeren's chosen faith - just for reference.

Daeren steps forward and attacks the vampire.

Daeren's attack: 3+10=13 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 055)

Unfortunately his axe glances off the creature's still sturdy armor. The bear attempts to crush the creature to it in the grapple. (Grapple: 1!+16=17 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 056) Spawn's opposed roll: 19+7=26 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 057)) The spawn manages to ward off the worst of the bear's attempt to crush it, and tries again to squirm out of the grapple. (Grapple Escape: 19+7=26 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 058) Bear's Opposed Grapple: 12+16=28 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 059))

The bear just manages to hold on to the growling, writhing undead creature, despite it's best attempts to break free. The wounds still close up, not quite erasing the damage the bear did to it, but well on their way to that happening.

You forgot to include my Alter Self in the round summary, just thought you should know.

Evil thing. You should be brought before the courts of light for hindering me so. Instead though - I guess I'll just have to take you down.

Daeren swings some more at the vile creature.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 01:57 PM
Due to my screw up with how a Prot from Good potion worked, the vampire is free of the grapple during Round 4. Shouldn't effect too much else from here on out.

Daeren, fueled by the might of his god, takes a mighty swing at the foul beast. (Attk: 3+10+2 (flanking)=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 060)) But still is unable to connect with the spawn.

The spawn, shrugging off the bear's embrace, thanks to the magical protection it imbied earlier, turns and attacks Daeran. (Attk: 4+8=12 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 061)) It is apparently at the same level of skill that Daeren is showing at this point, also missing badly. Fortunately for it, its wounds heal much faster than Daeren's will.

It bears it's teeth in a grin, "I will make you one of my slaves when this is finished."

For now - let's just keep attacking until one or the other connects.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 02:13 PM
Ok, I can do that. I was just giving you space if you wanted to cast something.

Daeren, frusturated by his missing, swings again at the vampire spawn. (Attk: 12+10=22 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 062)) His attack finally hits, releasing some of his pent up rage at the creature. (Damage: 7+4-5=6 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 063)

The creature actually blinks in shock at the force of the blow, and seems surprised at the amount of pain the now lizarded dwarf could deal out. "For that, your suffering shall last days." it fairly screeches in the tight space.

It swings it's sword again at the dwarf. (Attk: 7+8=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 064)) But it misses badly.

Point of interest: I believe you should still have arcane spell failure chances for casting, even though they're from scrolls. Man, I need to wake up here.

Yes I do have ASF on the scrolls. I forgot too. Its 10% - so go ahead and roll them if you like.

Daeren, bolstered by his success last attack, presses his advantage. (Attk: 13+10=23 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 065)) And is rewarded with more of the vile creature's thick blood seeping out of it's body. (Damage: 6+4-5=5 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 066)

The vampire's eyes narrow in pain and anger at the relentless assualt from Daeren. Yet it presses forward, trying to finish off it's foe. (Attk: 18+8=26 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 067)) It just misses, as Daeren manages to deflect the bastard sword with a hasty turn of his axe head. The creature is about as surprised as Daeren is that it worked.

Daeren - 48/60 hp, Shield [Rnd 21], Alter Self [303]

Next Round:

Daeren continues his assualt. (Attk: 10+10=20 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 068)) And is again rewarded with more damage to the creature. (Damage: 6+4-5=5 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 069))

The creature, at a bit of a loss for what to do now, attempts to grapple with Daeren, to stop the deadly assualt of the axe. (Daeren AoO: 3+10=13 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 070)) Finally the creature is granted a bit of infernal luck, as Daeren's reflexive swipe misses. (Spawn Touch Attack: 7+7=14 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 076)) (Spawn Grapple: 10+7=17 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 074) Daeren's Opposed Grapple: 5+8=13 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 075)

Daeren, despite his efforts, is drawn in to the creature's embrace. He can see it's mouth open wide as it prepares to bite down.

Your round 8 action. I figured now's a good time to see what you'd like to do.

Middle of Round 8, before Daeren's action:

Daeren - 48/60 hp, Shield [Rnd 21], Alter Self [303], Grappled
Brown Bear - 51/51, unable to hit it due to potion
Undead Creature - -12/??, potion [11], Grappling Daeren
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 02:38 PM
Daeren is infuriated with the creature and growls even louder as it wraps its arms around his lizard-like form.

However, Daeren pulls his reason back together and figures that the bear should be able to break through the protection soon (since he assumes he knows the nature of the potion did the protection). He quickly grabs hold of the creature and tries to reverse the grapple and pin it.

Try to pin it for one round.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 02:53 PM
(Daeren Grapple: 7+8=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 081)) Daeren attempts to pin the creature, turning around it's embrace. (Spawn opposed grapple: 11+7=18 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 082))

Unfortunately the spawn is more schooled in the ability to grapple, and avoids being pinned. It does however attempt to pin Daeren, so that it can drain the life out of him. (Grapple: 20!+7=27 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 083)) (Daeren Opposed Grapple: 2+8=10 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 084))

Daeren realizes he's in trouble as the creature immobilizes him. Next round, if he can't break free the spawn will begin draining his blood.

The bear paws at the air, roaring helplessly at the undead that is attacking it's master.

Middle of Round 9:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d21/Myrridin/Crypt2Rnd7.jpg

Daeren - 48/60 hp, Shield [Rnd 21], Alter Self [303], Pinned
Brown Bear - 51/51, unable to hit it due to potion
Undead Creature - -10/??, potion [11], Grappling Daeren

Your Round 9 action.
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 02:56 PM
Daeren rages in order to give himself the boost of strength he needs (can the bear "aid" me? if he can - please do...) and desperately tries to break the pin.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 03:09 PM
Given that the Bear can't touch the spawn...hmmm, I'm going to say it can try to grab your collar and pull you back. As an "Aid Another" action.

The bear moves over to the grapple on the ground, and tries to pull Daeren apart from the spawn. (Assist Another: 9+11=20 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 085)) The bear successfully grabs ahold of Daeren's collar, and attempts to help pull him free of the undead's grasp.

(Daeren Grapple to escape: 19+12=31 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 086)) (Spawn Grapple: 17+7=24 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 087))With a roar rivaling the bear's moments before, Daeren throws off the clutches of the Spawn in a burst of strength..

Round 10:

Suprise flies across the face of the spawn at the sudden burst of strength displayed by Daeren. Also, some dismay, as it was looking forward to a meal. It tries a different tactic, taking a 5' step backwards, it gazes at Daeren, willing him to become his slave. (gaze attack, Daeren Will Save: 14+9=23 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 088))
It is not happy when not only does the gaze attack not work, but it ellicits a laugh from Daeren.

Middle of Round 10:

Move everyone back a 5' step from where they were. My map got corrupted when I was doing some editing. I figure you'll be in melee with the bear flanking from here on out. Your action now.

Daeren - 48/60 hp, Shield [Rnd 21], Alter Self [303]
Brown Bear - 51/51, unable to hit it due to potion
Undead Creature - -8/??, potion [11]
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 03:22 PM
Before I continue - my breaking the pin does not break the grapple - just the pin. He then can try to reestablish the pin or try breaking the grapple, etc
Myrridin

11-18-05, 03:33 PM
Yeah, I know that. He's switching tactics, as he's now had 2 of his 3 main ways of hurting you proven to be ineffective, he thought he'd try his third. Also, he knows his protection from the bear is nearing an end, and wanted you out of the way for that. His bad luck.
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 03:37 PM
Well, the thing is - he still needs to break the grapple - something which requires a check on his part...
Myrridin

11-18-05, 03:45 PM
Crap, totally my fault. I read the rules on what he can do if you're pinned...not if you're just in a grapple. he'll try to re-establish said grapple. Thanks.

Round 10, part 2:

The Spawn tries to re-pin Daeren, despite his new found strength. (Spawn Grapple: 8+7=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 089) Daeren Opposed Grapple: 15+10=25 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 090))

The spawn is unable to repin Daeren, despite it's efforts.

Daeren, your move. All other mid-round information remains the same. You are both grappled.
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 03:50 PM
Daeren, seeing that he has regained the upper hand, tries again to reverse the grapple in his favor so that the bear can rip the creature to shreds.

Try to pin.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 03:58 PM
And the wrestling match continues.

(Daeren's Grapple Attempt: 10+10=20 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 091); Spawn's Opposed Grapple: 10+7=17 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 092))

Daeren turns his increased strength to his advantage and manages to pin the vampire spawn to the ground. It howls in frusturated rage at the dwarf/lizardman and attempts to break free from the crushing embrace.

(Spawn Escape check: 9+7=16 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 093); Daeren's opposed check: 16+10=26 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 094))

Daeren surpresses the spawn's attempt to wiggle free, and holds it tightly to the floor. He wonders how long the protection potion could last. (I'm giving you a Knowledge: arcana check to determine if you can figure out when you bear will be able to attack. Knowledge check: 3+8=11 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 095))

You think his protection will end soon, but you're not quite sure. It's up to you what you want to do this round.

Middle of Round 11:

Daeren - 48/60 hp, Shield [Rnd 21], Alter Self [303], Pinning the spawn
Brown Bear - 51/51, unable to hit it due to potion
Undead Creature - -6/??, pinned
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 04:00 PM
Should probably have been a spellcraft check - but it doesn't look like I would've made it anyway.

Daeren twists the creature in half as he tries to rip its arms out.

Grapple for damage...

Also, even though the bear can't physically touch the creature - it should still be trying - so when it does break through - it just does...
Myrridin

11-18-05, 04:11 PM
Fair enough. Fortunately, it does this round

Daeren attempts to rip the creature apart. (Grapple: 20!+6=20 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 096)' Opp Grapple: 13+7=20 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 097))

Daeren's strength proves greater than the fiends, and he twists it to cause pain. (Damage: 3+5-5=3 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 099))

The bear finally is able to break through the protection that the potion afforded the creature, and strike it. (Bear claw attack: 1!+11=12 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 100)) Unfortunately it doesn't seem to make as much of a difference as Daeren would like.

Round 11:

The creature tries to break the pin. (Spawn Grapple: 17+7=24 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 102)' Daeren's opposed Grapple: 6+10=16 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 103))

The spawn is now merely grappling with Daeren, instead of pinned. I'll take the bear's attack at the spawn, and then let you decide whether to try to pin again, or try to break the grapple and use your axe.

The bear paws at the spawn again. (Attack: 19+11=30 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 104); Damage: 5+8=5=8 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 105)) Landing a mighty blow that nearly finishes tearing off the spawn's arm.

Before Daeren's action, Round 12:

Daeren - 48/60 hp, Shield [Rnd 21], Alter Self [303], Grappled
Brown Bear - 51/51
Undead Creature - -15/??, grappled
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 04:16 PM
Yup - time to break the grapple and start hacking away...

Daeren's confidence just got renewed as his bear started to tear through the creature. Daeren pushed the creature out of his way and hefted his axe up again.

Time to be brought to dust. Are you ready? Daeren's smile is filled with anger and hatred.
Myrridin

11-18-05, 04:29 PM
The creature allows the grapple to be broken, hoping to catch Daeren with it's eyes, and crushing his will.

(Daeren attack: 15+12=27 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 106); Damage: 4+7-5=6 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 107))

The creature's hope is quickly dashed when Daeren's axe crushes into it's chest, nearly severing it in half. It's only hope is to catch Daeren's gaze, and force him to relent.
(5' step backwards, and Gaze attempt. Will save: 6+9=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 108)) The dwarf's will is too much, the dominate attempt can't penetrate the rage that clouds Daeren's mind.

(Daeren's attack: 6+12+2 (flanking)=20 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 109); Damage: 7+7-5=9 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 110))
The creature nearly falls over from the last axe hit, struggling to hold it's form together. The sneer falls off its face all together as the bear tries to swipe its head off. (Claw: 16+11+2=29 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 112); Damage: 3+8-5=6 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 113))
Finally the creature has taken too much punishment from the dwarf and his ally. It's body dissipates into a foul green smoke, and drifts back in to the sarcophogus.

"Hey, you all right down there? What the hell's going on?!" You hear a voice drift down from the ladder. Looking up you can see the human you first met peering down at you.

Combat has ended as the vampire spawn has been forced back in to the sarcophogus. Out of combat now.
TelinArtho

11-18-05, 08:13 PM
I take it you haven't been down here at night yet? You might need to take care of this here coffin as it seems to be housing something pretty nasty.

Don't worry - it seems to be gone now - but I wouldn't be surprised if it causes you trouble later.

Daeren pauses for a moment, then adds

Yeah - I'm okay.

Daeren sets down on the ground to catch his breath. He pats the bear on the shoulder and thanks it. He then offers the opened portion of the bag - and it slowly returns inside. At the same time, Daeren dissolves the lizard-like skin around his form, once again looking like himself.
Myrridin

11-21-05, 09:05 AM
The crypt is eerily quiet again, after the fury of the just completed battle. The man at the top's voice rings out again, "Ahhh, ok. Do you know how we'd do that?"

From Daeren's new vantage point on the floor, he sees a small series of sketches that weren't visible from his standing viewpoint. They're more of the figure with the glowing spear; but this time he's fighting what looks like a wave of vermin of some sort. The exact picture's been worn mostly away...except for the last corner of the sarcophogus. In that corner Daeren can see the figure with the spear has fallen, and is entombed by one other figure...a human. Who looks suspiciously like the one that Daeren just fought.
TelinArtho

11-21-05, 09:48 AM
Daeren drinks down a potion from his belt pouch before moving on.

If the roll is 4hp healed or less, use a second one

No clue... you might try breaking it apart - or even better - burning the sucker. Once I'm back, I help getting it out of here - but first let me see what else I can find.

Daeren inspects the drawings closer and tries to gather the meaning behind them. It does not appear that his dwarven hero survived the ages, which saddens him. However, he can still hope that the Spear of Fangs is still intact.

Searching a bit more around the coffin, he even tests its weight by attempting to shift it from its spot in the room.

Continue searching the room for anything secret. If nothing is found, Daeren's going to start digging through the rubble... so let's take 20 on the searching...
Myrridin

11-21-05, 10:12 AM
Potions of Cure Light Wounds Rolls: 1+1=2 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 146); 6+1=7 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 147)

Daeren carefully searches the room to the best of his ability, but doesn't find any secret passages. The excavators are careful not to disturb him, as they slide the stone lid of the sarcophogus off to reveal the body of the "man" he just fought.

"You sure he's dead...again?" Daeren's asked, as they reveal the partially hacked body of the spawn that attacked him. "If you say he is, we're gonna burn him tonight. Don't want this thing coming back, angrier than he was."

The digging proves tough going, after about 30 minutes, little headway has been made. Though he does find a small stone box, about four inches square. The rest of the passageway is still filled with the accumulated debris of ages.
TelinArtho

11-21-05, 11:49 AM
Seeing the small box, Daeren picks it up and carefully dusts it off.

What's this? he asks to himself. He looks it over carefully before opening it.

This is assuming that there is some visible way to open it of course... If not, he'll open it with another rock :)
Myrridin

11-21-05, 01:11 PM
Daeren sees what appears to be an old metal latch, though time has caused it to rust almost away. The box itself appears to be quasi-sealed by some mud that has formed a hard cement like substance. It will take more than just prying it open; it looks like a chisel or some other tool will be needed.

"You want this sword?"The man asks Daeren, "It appears to be in pretty nice shape, even after all these years. I figure since you killed him, you should get the first choice of his stuff." He finishes as they start dragging the body towards the ladder.
TelinArtho

11-21-05, 01:48 PM
Daeren gives the sword a second glance and examines it. Sure - why not? He then starts using it to help dislodge the mud that has glued the box shut.

Essentially, spellcraft to determine if there's any sort of magic to it, but other than that - he's using it as a wedge to open the box...
Myrridin

11-21-05, 02:03 PM
Spellcraft Check: 8+8=16 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 150)

Daeren determines that there's nothing inherently magical about the box...though the image on him using a bastard sword to pry open the 4 inch stone box is slightly comical.

After abotu 5 minutes of work, the sword breaks the seal, and the box opens with a small, slightly musty, puff of dust. Inside is a key, as well as a very worn, folded piece of supple leather.

The key is obviously finely crafted, of indeterminate age, though you'd guess old, just by where you found it. The leather was smooth at one point, but is definitely brittle now. It's a miracle that it's survived all this time.

About this time Daeren can see the glow from a large fire topside from the crypt. The light down here, even with the lantern, is going to make it hard to read anything.
TelinArtho

11-21-05, 02:06 PM
The lantern's not enough to read by?

Daeren seeks out a better reading spot - but finding none within the crypt, he ascends the ladder looking for better lighting.
Myrridin

11-21-05, 02:25 PM
For normal stuff the lantern's fine. You're trying to read a very old piece of leather parchment, that has a chance to disintegrate in the next 10-15 minutes.

Daeren heads up to the camp, and sees the bonfire well underway, with the body of the spawn he destroyed meerily turning to cinders. He walks to a tent that is set up near the entrance to the crypt, and is pleased to see that it was a table with numberous light stones anchored to the corners, providing brilliant illumination to the table.

Carefully he unfolds the parchment, losing a corner along the way. When he has it unfolded, he still needs to use the magnifying glass that is sitting in a holder along one edge of the table.

The parchment appears to be a map, hand drawn, that leads to a secret entrance to somewhere...perhaps Karl'zun. It would fit the approximate location, if the gnome's stories were correct. In dwarvish, it does warn that the city has been overrun by...something. A word he doesn't recognize.

Enlisting the help of some of the others, Daeren tries to pinpoint the location of this other entrance. He is less concerned about the unknown creature as getting to his goal - and he seems more determined than ever to recover the spear.

11-21-05, 05:27 PM
Tillan squints at the map, and then after a few minutes leans back slightly, "Well, I can point you in the general direction...at least I think I can. But you don't want to go that way. We've heard from the merchants that there have been black colored elves waylaying travellers...doing all sorts of unsavory things." He thinks for another second, "But if this map is correct, the way you want to head is this way." He pulls out a recent map of the area, and points to the spot on a mountain that he's describing.

"It's about a two day journey to get there; at least to the mountain." he finishes saying.
TelinArtho

11-22-05, 10:17 AM
Eh elves are nothing to worry about - at least not for any sturdy folk like dwarves... two days though? Well, I best be going then...

"You sure you want to leave tonight? You're welcome to stay the night with us, and then leave in the morning." Tillan says.

I suppose the rest wouldn't be a horrible idea. I guess then - sure.

11-22-05, 01:51 PM
Daeren awakes to the smell of crisping bacon and light chatter around a camp fire. Thrusting open the tent door, he sees Tillan and the other workers around the fire, eating breakfast.

"Care to join us?"Tillan asks, "Thanks to your finds yesterday, we've got enough to head back to the university for awhile. Back to civilization." he says, a bit excitedly.

Tillan hands Daeren a plate of food, "Well, I best bet up and finishing the packing. Safe travels along your way. If you come back, please stop by the university, we'd love to hear an account of your journey." with that he walks in to one of the other tents and resumes packing.

Daeren is free to leave whenever. He has a decent map, and directions to where he's going.
TelinArtho

11-22-05, 01:58 PM
Daeren packs up quickly, since he is anxious to get going. He thanks them all for his hospitality and bids them safe travels as well.

After a while of walking (say, after an hour if nothing has happened before that time), Daeren decides to pull an animal from his bag and have it accompany him for a while (if he gets the horse, he'll ride it at full bore for the ten minutes in an attempt to get that much closer, quicker...). He enjoys the company of animals, and enjoys the company of others, so this is not uncommon for him to do.
Myrridin

11-22-05, 02:28 PM
After an hour of walking, Daeren decides to pull out an animal; to his surprise, a heavy warhorse pops out. (Bag of Tricks roll: 79 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 175)

He rides it heavily for ten minutes, and then it disappears. He did make much better time that way. His first day passes uneventfully, though he does notice that at times some violent struggles marked the road, not too long ago, if he's any judge of time.
TelinArtho

11-22-05, 02:39 PM
Nifty - what timing...

Daeren continues along the road in solitude on his second day, and keeps a vigilant eye out in case trouble brews, given the nature of the turned up dust on the road.

In case it matters, for the most part, Daeren travels with nothing in his hands.
Myrridin

11-23-05, 09:33 AM
Long in to his second day Daeren finally notices some solid signs that there has been a fight in this area. There is some dried blood splattered along the ground, as well as a broken wagon, partially overturned and off the trail that he's following. Daeren is close to his goal, the mountains loom high overhead, casting everything into shadows much earlier than is normal for this time of year.

Not far now, at least according to his map. It should only be a couple miles. Though given the terrain, this will take a bit more time. Daeren figures that he should reach the door at nightfall. Assuming nothing goes wrong.
TelinArtho

11-23-05, 01:41 PM
Eh... might as well pull out another creature for 10 minutes and ride hard - even a bear would be a spot better than my move speed... but I'll hope for a horse see how it goes...

Daeren notes the dried blood with a bit of concern as well as the encroaching clouds. He wishes to get to his destination before something befalls him that he is not anticipating. He pulls another ball from his bag and rides the creature that emerges hard until it too disappears.
Myrridin

11-23-05, 02:00 PM
Daeren pulls another animal out of the bag of tricks. (Roll: 32 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 215))
A lion pops out of the bag, and shakes its mane, and then looks at Daeren expectantly.

Because the mental image amuses me, I'm going with Daeren riding a lion.

Daeren hops aboard the lion, and for ten minutes is treated to the scariest ride of his life. When it ends, he knows that he's made better time than if he just walked...but somehow, he's not sure that was worth it.

Daeren trudges for awhile longer, and just as the sun is going down over the mountains, he finds the path that leads to where the secret door is supposed to be.

If you push, you could be at the foot of the door about 1 hour after nightfall (Assuming the map is accurate). There are some trees and shrubs here, but if you move farther down it, you'll likely be camping on a decently hilly area.
TelinArtho

11-23-05, 09:28 PM
Daeren would've enjoyed that ride - just for the record...

Daeren trudges on with a bit of a fire to his step. Anxious to find the spear - he continues on. In the mean time, Awk flies ahead of him slightly, in order to warn him of any danger up ahead that might be unseen.

Awk will fly at about 20ft from the ground and warn me of anything out of the ordinary.
Myrridin

11-28-05, 10:47 AM
Awk does not see or hear anything as he scouts ahead. He returns to you when you get close to where the trail ends.

I'm going to say you take 20 on your Search to find the door. Just to save some time/rolling

After a complete search of the wall area, you finally find the door. It's located about where the map would have you believe, maybe off five or ten feet. The sun has gone completely down now, and you're relying on your darkvision to work out where everything is.

8+5=13 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 301)
The first crossbow bolt shatters on the stone next to Daeren's head, just missing him. You figure that you didn't hear them approach because of the distance.

15+5=19 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 302)
The arrow that followed a quarter second later does find it's mark however, striking in to Daeren's flesh. (Damage: 8+0=8 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 303)

Did the shots come from two different directions or both from the same? If they came from different directions, Awk will find the one with the bow first.

Awk - find them!

Daeren then reaches into his bag and pulls out another ball of fur. He tells the creature to seek and prepares for battle. Awk streaks out quickly, looking for the attackers.

The shots came from the same direction.

(Bag of Tricks: 23 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 307))

Daeren pulls out a small ball of fur that quickly becomes a brown bear upon hitting the ground.

Awk flies outwards, in the direction of the shots. He gets about as far as he can in that moment (Read double move), and senses on the edge of his blindsense two humanoid figures. You can follow him to the figures now. He perches high in a tree, out of sight of them. The bear lumbers off in the direction that Daeren points.

(Bow attack: 14+4=18 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 308))

The bear manages to reach one of your opponents this round, and take an attack. (Attack: 1!+11=12 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 310)) But doesn't have any luck what so ever, and actually gouges out the ground.

The crossbow wielding guy (the one the bear attacked), manages to tumble out of harm's way (Tumble check: 7+8=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 311)) and then the area is enveloped in darkness.

Awk will fly to negate the darkness with his blindsight. The bear will continue to seek out the opponents.

One other thing I just thought of - unless they have darkvision to the appropriate distances, they should be suffering miss chances due to concealment (of the darkness).

Daeren is unfazed by the darkness and quickly draws another scroll from his case and starts to read from it.

Move action to draw Scroll of Enlarge Person (CL2), standard action to start the spell, standard action next round to finish it, move action to move closer and draw longspear.

They have 120' darkvision, that's already been taken in to account, and why they attacked from so far away.
(Spell Failure chance: 54 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 313) Does not lose the spell)

Awk flies in to the darkness, and is able to relocate the bad guys. Daeren gets a general impression of what's going on.

The bear snuffles loudly in the night time air, and then moves farther in to the darkness (Move action to determine direction, another move action to get closer, no attack this round)

Awk knows where the bad guys are, until they move again. One of them stays just on the edge of his blindsense, the other moves out of it.

(Tumble Check: 18+8=26 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 320)) One of them tumbles away from being close to the bear, but is still out of your sight.

Finish casting, then move to 20ft away from the nearest drow, drawing the longspear along the way
Myrridin

11-28-05, 03:35 PM
Daeren finishes casting, and grows to double his former size. He fairly rumbles as he moves forwards towards his enemy.

The bear snuffles again, and moves towards where he smells his opponent. Daeren gets the impression from Awk that there is only 1 more of his opponents out there, besides the one that he can see. Awk also lets you know that the bear is at the edge of the darkness, and should be able to help you some more soon.

The drow draws a rapier and dagger, and attempts to tumble towards Daeren (Tumble Check: 2+1=3 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 329)) He fails miserably, and Daeren gets a swat at him. Daeren drops the longspear at his feet, and takes a mighty swing with his waraxe. (Attack: 8+8=16 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 336)) His swing just misses the dark elf, gouging the dirt next to it.

The bear has to spend one last round smelling for it's opponent, and then it moves out of the darkness and towards the elf, spotting it this round.

The wounded elf bravely soliders on, snarling something at Daeren in Undercommon. He attacks with his rapier and dagger, trying to bring down the dwarf. (rapier attack: 18+6=24 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 339) Crit Threat: 14+6=20 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 340)) Thanks to Daeren's slightly defensive manuevering, the rapier does not land as telling of a blow as it otherwise would've. (Damage: 6+3=9 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 341)) His dagger moves in for a strike as well. That rapier of yours is causing me more trouble than it is worth.

Daeren takes a step away from the two opponents and then brings his waraxe down on his opponent's rapier - trying to break it in two.

Step back to avoid the AoO from the sunder attempt and to prevent the other opponent from just 5ft-stepping to me. Sunder with expertise -2 to hit/+2 to AC. Sunder roll on my side should be +17 (+5 BAB, +4 size, +4 str, +4 two-handed attack). Damage should be 1d10+6-10 (hardness) - barring of course if the rapier was magical or something.

The drow appears a bit shocked by this turn of events.

The bear charges the second drow, trying to catch up to it for nuisance it's been this fight. (Charging Attack: 2+13=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 347)) But it just misses again. Spittle flies from it's mouth as it roars in frusturation.

The second drow tumbles (tumble Check: 15+10=25 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 348)) closer to Daeren, and attacks once with his rapier. (Attack: 1+7=8 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 349)) but he misses badly.

The first drow steps forward and draws a dagger. Determined to kill the interloping dwarf. he snarls back, in heavily accented common, "You will suffer greatly for your impudence, inferior dwarf." Daeren pats the bear on the shoulder and thanks him for the help when he needed it. Awk comes and rests on Daeren's shoulder - nuzzling his neck in an expression of worry at Daeren's wounds.

Realizing that he's bleeding, Daeren takes a few potions from his pack and drinks them down slowly, easing his muscles into relaxation before moving on. He then takes a moment to look over the bodies of the drow dead before him - pitying them for being so rash.

It never has to end this way you know. He says to no one in particular.

Drink up to all 8 of the remaining CLW potions until I am at 57+hp. Dismiss the enlarge person, but don't put the bear back in the bag - he'll come with me until the 10 minutes are up - I'll lead the way.

You're at exactly 57 HP now.

You drink 6 of the 8 Cure Light Wounds potions you have left, before you feel sufficiently healed to move on. Letting out a thunderous burp as you scan the bodies of the two drow, you see a couple empty potion containers on each body, as well as some obviously nice studded leather armor. Their weapons appear nice, but certainly nothing a dwarf such as yourself would want to use.

Daeren busys himself with the door for a couple more minutes, before finding the entrance mechanism. He works with it for a few seconds, and then with a hideous grinding noise, the door slides partially open...then sticks. A blast of stale air courses over your face, smelling of rot and dust.

There is (obviously) no light inside the tunnel that opens before you, but your darkvision picks up the hallway that stretches straight in front of you.

You pat the bear on the neck again, and gesture for it to follow you into the blackness in front of you.

You're able to make out some carvings that still remain on the walls, they look like depictions of heroic figures from the city's distant past. Scattered against the walls at various places are piles of bones and rusted armor. Most appear to be dwarven in ancestory, but occasionally some look taller, less stocky.

The bear disappears back into nothingness not long after you enter the secret door. As you work your way deeper in to the mountain, you hear the faint echoes of water...not just dripping, definitely louder than that.

Daeren runs his fingers along the walls as he goes, trying to get familiar with the construction of the passage and the dwarves that once walked through it.

Daeren's stomach is a bit jittery from being so close to his end goal and only hopes that this is the location he has been looking so hard for. He keeps his axe in hand, in case of trouble and lets Awk fly ahead of him slightly, near the ceiling of the passageway, in case something comes upon him that he cannot yet see.

Fortunately for you Awk manages to correct your wrong turns a time or two, mainly by virtue of flying ahead and scouting out.

You do have to stop before too long, as the long day of travel, plus the fight outside the door has somewhat tired you out. You manage to get about two to three hours in however.

You find a half-rotted door that led to what was, at one time, probably a storage area. All that's in it now are some scattered pieces of wood, anywhere between three and five dwarf skeletons (it's hard to tell as they're piled in the corner, and the bones are all jumbled up), and some nearly rusted out weapons and armor.

Any plans beyond sleeping?
TelinArtho

11-30-05, 10:18 AM
What's this? Unburied dwarven bodies?

Daeren spends some time looking over the bones and any remains they have with them in an attempt to recognize the clan to which they belonged or if they had anything that might indicate how they died or why they were piled into the corner.

He also takes a look around to make sure the area is secure except for the entrances that he knows of (In other words - he's doing a quick search to make sure that nothing will be coming out of the walls or from the ceiling...). Then he settles down for a quick repose - Awk settling in on his shoulder once more.
Myrridin

11-30-05, 11:34 AM
After this long the clan isn't really something he can determine. As for cause of death, at least two of them looked to have been killed by bladed weapons, but for the rest, their bodies are just too old to really give much useful information.

As Daeren moves the bodies into one corner, arranging them in some semblance of peace, a small metal medallion drops out of the remains of a pocket on one of the bodies. It's heavily tarnished, but after some scrubbing at it, Daeren can make out an image of a spider on it.

The only entrance Daeren can find is the door that's still partially there. The heavy dust in the room also leads you to believe that this area has been forgotten for years, perhaps centuries.

Daeren takes the medallion and turns it over a few times in his hand before putting it into a pocket. Something about this just isn't right - not sure what yet - but surely it is something... Daeren talks to himself absently and bids the skeletons fair time in the afterworld.

Daeren takes a bit of bread out of his pack and munches on it for a bit of sustenance before continuing on - giving a few tender bites to Awk as well. Inspecting the door carefully, he attempts to open it carefully.

Daeren will put away his waraxe while opening the door, but once he is done doing so, he'll draw it again.

[BUMP?]

Where did you go?
Myrridin

12-05-05, 09:14 AM
Sorry, my wife was sick the later part of last week, and I was taking care of her. I'll try to finish this in the next two days.

Daeren cautiously opens the door, and it squeaks a bit on the hinge, seeming unnaturally loud in the stillness that are the hallways.

Redrawing his waraxe, Daeren is able to make his way first to the waterfall that he heard in the distance, and then continue past it. After about a half day of walking, Daeren sees the faint glimmer of light up ahead, and sees that the hallway appears to connect to a much larger room.

You don't hear anything else.
TelinArtho

12-05-05, 09:34 AM
Awk - time to go fly ahead and let me know if there's anything up there that could cause us trouble.

Awk takes off from Daeren's shoulder and heads forward and to the ceiling to stay out of sight.

How wide/high is the area I'm in?
Myrridin

12-05-05, 10:49 AM
The hallway you're in is about 5 feet wide, and 8 or so tall. It opens in to a room that is large...very, very large.

Awk flies up and out, and starts to circle the room that you're about to enter. There are spider webs and dust all over the place, as well as some statues and ruins.

the entire area is softly illuminated by torches that are evenly spaced along the walls. The torches appear to be relatively fresh, probably no more than an hour old. You see more of the same in here as well, dwarven bodies, partially mummified by time, and rusted armor and weapons.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d21/Myrridin/Entrancetounderground.jpg

You are the blue dot in the lower left corner of the map

Against the far wall, up some steps, you can see the massive wooden doors. One of them is partially open.
TelinArtho

12-05-05, 10:57 AM
Daeren doesn't like the look of this - but is impressed with the massiveness of the hall. He watches as Awk flies over the area and then moves up to between the first statue and column - hoping to get a good hiding position while he investigates the room. [Moving as silently as possible]
Myrridin

12-05-05, 11:39 AM
Daeren moves swiftly across the floor, disturbing nothing but some dust as he moves silently in between the first statue and the pillar. (Move Silently: 14+3=17 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 727))

Nothing notices him, and he doesn't notice any baddies. At least at this time.

Daeren looks up, and the ceiling is about 50 feet above him. High enough that he can make it out with his darkvision, but not so high that he can't see everything. It's a smooth topped ceiling, with nothing on it. At one point there were probably some carved murals up there, but again, the ages have worn them down to nothing. Well, that and there appears to be some random scorch marks, as if from long ago fights.

The four doors across the cavern are all closed, and apparently still in decent shape. They look like sturdy iron-bound wood, and were probably treated with something to have survived the ravanges of time so well.

The statue that Daeren is standing next to was once fifteen or so feet tall, but age and battles have reduced it to about seven feet.
TelinArtho

12-05-05, 12:38 PM
Daeren reaches into his bag of tricks for another animal. This area is simply too big to let something get the jump on him - so he figures the more allies at hand - the better off he is.

After drawing out the animal, Daeren commands it to guard him and then he moves up to the 2nd pillar and statue - looking out over the water to the left.
Myrridin

12-05-05, 01:47 PM
Daeren, not liking how vulnerable he feels in this place, pulls out a new animal, to give him some cover and protection. (Bag of Tricks: 92 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 731)) A rhino pops out, and is gently told to guard him.

Daeren looks out across the water, and sees that the bridge has numerous places where it has collapsed in. There are no boats there.

He moves up as he looks at the water. When he settles in next to the second pillar, he hears a voice call out, "What are you doing in my home? I thought that I'd killed the last of your kind."
TelinArtho

12-05-05, 01:51 PM
I didn't realize this to be "your" home - it appeared to be abandoned some time ago - heck it was even closed off from the above ground.

Daeren looks about carefully, trying to find the source of the voice.

I can assure you, I did not mean any disrespect for trespassing. I am merely in search of something - and that search has led me here, though for reasons I am not quite aware.
Myrridin

12-05-05, 02:26 PM
Daeren looks around, and up on the ceiling he sees a creature he's never heard of before. It looks like half an elf, and half a spider. (The creature is at the seen distance, and 50 feet up, on the ceiling.)

Daeren moves to cover, after assuming the shape of lizardman.

He hears some chittering laughter from the drider as it moves to get a better view. He hears some chanting, and then a ghostly whip appears next to him. It attacks Daeren. (Attack: 5+7=12 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 739)) But it misses. Daeren hears a ghostly *crack* of a whip as it scores the statue next to him.

Daeren spends a moment to ponder his fate and pulls a scroll from his pack, but casts a spell from memory.

Cast Expeditious Retreat from memory, pull scroll of Magic Missile (CL3). 5ft step to (16,11).

Now I need more informaiton. The gaps on the bridge are only 5ft accross right? (so a running jump by Daeren with Exp Retreat would be at +15 vs DC5 - auto success) Is the ceiling over there any lower than the rest of the area?

How about at the far end with the double doors - is the area narrower over there?

The doors along the side - they are closed right? Does it look like they are locked or are able to be locked? Is there any area in here that doesn't have a 50ft high ceiling (even 40ft is better than nothing...)?
Myrridin

12-05-05, 04:11 PM
The gaps between the bridge are each 5' wide, that is correct.

The ceiling over the bridge is about 30', by your estimation.

The ceiling near the doors at the top is only 15' tall, the top end of the doors. It's also only 10' wide.

Each of the 4 doors across the walkway can be closed, as they are right now. As for locked, you don't know, as you don't see a lock on the outside. It is possible that they could be barred from the inside.

Daeren casts another spell from memory, and moves a bit. He takes a quick glance around the room to gather some more information.

The drider moves towards him again, and gestures like it's throwing something at him. He feels the magic from the creature try to pull apart the spells he's laid on himself. (Dispel Magic against Alter Self: 6+6=12 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 742); Dispel Check vs. Expeditious Retreat: 6+6=12 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 743)) In an extraordinary bit of luck, both of Daeren's spells hold against the assualt by the drider!

The spiritual hammer takes another swing at him. (Attack: 1!+7=8 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 744)) It misses badly!

Daeren moves across the room with lightning quickness and arrives at the second door (25,9). Putting his back against it, he casts the spell from the scroll in hand - and 2 golden arrows streak towards the spider-like creature.

I have no intent on becoming your meal today or ever. However, if you pursue this line of action - I'll be forced to make sure you don't survive.

The stocky dwarf moves as a blur across the room, ending with his back against a solid oak dorr. He incants a spell from his scroll, and watches in satisfaction.

Daeren's missiles streak forth and slam into the foul creature. (MM damage 1: 2+1=3 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 745); MM damage 2: 4+1=5 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 746))

The floating whip follows him across the room, and attacks him once. (Attack: 15+7=22 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 747)) It just misses scouring his flesh, much to his relief.

The drider, angry at the damage it's taken, hisses out a foul word, trying to drive Daeren blind. (Fort Save: 13+11=24 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 748)) But his hardy dwarven heritage, and barbarian training, prevents him from falling victim to the spell.

Two quick things - alter self last 10 minutes/level (so round 301). Not good for me - but the drider has SR - so the MM might not have penetrated (actually I wanted this so that Daeren would know to be cautious...).

Also, I'll be leaving in about 1/2 an hour and will be back on sometime later (~8-9pm eastern US time until whenever I get tired (probably midnight-1am). I know we're running on a tight time frame - but if you won't be on around that time - we'll just finish it up tomorrow

Alright - back to the fun...

Daeren tries to open the door.

Contingency: if it opens, he moves inside to (6,27) - the rhino should follow. Also - let me know how high the ceiling is in there. If there's something harmful within - obviously give me the chance to change my actions before rushing in...

if it doesn't open: Daeren will move to (22,19)

In both of the above situations I am assuming that the attempt takes up my move action for the round.

You're right, I totally forgot about the Spell Resistance. Thanks for the reminder Telin!

End of Round 3, Drider Spell Resistance for the Magic Missile: 6+3=9 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 749), fails!

The missiles dissipate right before they hit the creature. Causing it to laugh at Daeren's expense.

Round 4 actions:

Daeren attempts to pull the door open, but the time, and water, has warped the heavy door in it's frame, wedging it securely there. Finding this, he scurries across the room again.

The whip attempts to flay him again. (Attack: 19+7=26 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 750), it hits! Damage: 1+2=3 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 751)) The whip scours Daeren's cheek, drawing a small amount of blood.

Daeren moves up the stairs and through the door that is partially open - stepping behind the one that is closed to block the sight of the spider-like creature.

Once there, he pulls another scroll from his case.

Not sure which door is open and which is closed. In any case, draw scroll of Shield from pack after blocking LOS. Cast it on the following round and draw the Longspear. If I still don't have it knocking on my door - cast Enlarge Person from memory.
Myrridin

12-06-05, 09:31 AM
It's fairly academic as to which door is partially open. You can certainly make it through the open one, and block LOS this round.

Daeren scurries across the floor and ducks throught he partially open door. Inside he finds what was probably the throne room. Currently it's a 20x20 room with the remains of a dwarf seated on the throne. He draws the scroll once he's safely inside the room. The rhino tries to follow, but is stopped by the partially closed door.

"I thought your kind had more valor than to hide from a fight." The drider yells out as Daeren finds some cover inside the room. Daeren hears (Listen check: 8+15=23 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 798)) some spell casting from the drider. (Spellcraft: 8+8=16 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 799)) But he can't identify which spell she's casting.

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d21/Myrridin/UndergroundRnd6.jpg

Daeren Round 6 Actions:

Daeren casts the spell from a scroll that he pulled out earlier. He doesn't hear the drider move any closer to him...it's probably staying away from the rhino. He pulls out his spear, and waits, trying to ascertain any activity.

Round 7:

Daeren hears more spellcasting (Listen: 17+15=32 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 801)) and tries to figure out what spell the creature just cast. (Spellcraft: 10+8-18 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 802)) he knows that the drider just cast Bless on itself.

Daeren casts another spell on himself. And this time he grows to proportions matching the drider's size.

End of Round 7, the map looks the same.

The drider doesn't do anything that he can tell for it's action at the beginning of Round 8.

Is that where I know it to be? or is that the last known location? If it is the last known location, let's peak my head around the corner to get an update.

Assuming it is still out of range though, let's put down the longspear, draw the crossbow and load it.

Valor has no place when fighting a dishonorable creature such as yourself. Come fight on my level and we'll see where valor goes.
Myrridin

12-06-05, 10:08 AM
That was the last known location.

Daeren figures he needs to know where the drider is, and risks a quick peak around the corner. He sees it still hanging from the ceiling, in much the same position that it was in the last time he saw it.

Daeren figures this could take awhile, so he puts down his longspear, and draws his heavy crossbow.

I'm guessing you want to take your first shot in this round? If so, I'll do it, and then we'll move forward from there.
TelinArtho

12-06-05, 10:22 AM
As soon as I am done loading the crossbow, yes. Unfortunately it is a heavy crossbow - so full round for loading...
Myrridin

12-06-05, 10:58 AM
Daeren finishes loading his crossbow (Rnd 8), and then steps out to take a shot. This triggers the action the Drider had readied. The spell from her scroll streaks towards Daeren, attempting to rip the magic from his body. (Dispel Magic -- Check vs Enlarge Person: 17+5=22 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 805), dispelled; vs Shield: 18+5=23 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 806), dispelled; vs Expeditious Retreat: 10+5=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 807), dispelled; vs. Alter Self: 10+5=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 808), dispelled) This time her magic works, and it strips the protections and carefully laid spells from Daeren.

His crossbow does shoot towards the Drider however. (Attack: 6+9=15 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 809), misses!)

Daeren picks up the longspear and readies to attack if the Drider comes within range, using the door as cover.

Come get your medicine then - its a tight fit all around.

Hmmm - with the ceiling by the doors only as high as 15ft, and a rhino already there at 10ft high - the large drider will have to squeeze in order to get to me. If he does so, I would think that this qualifies under the protection from good as "[t]he protection against contact by summoned creatures ends if the warded creature makes an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature." Even if not - it will need to squeeze in - which is its own set of penalties...
Myrridin

12-06-05, 01:41 PM
Hmm, ok, here's the problem. The drider's too intelligent to attack you in such a position that it exposes itself to the rhino killing it. So it's going to shoot arrows at you for as long as it can, and then it's going to wait out the summons.

I'm assuming that Daeren won't do anything but stay covered behind the door, perhaps giving it no shot. We're at a bit of an impasse here, and I'm not sure how to handle this. But that's my current thinking.
TelinArtho

12-06-05, 03:23 PM
How about this - it waits out my summons, trying to shoot at me (and I will shoot back from the cover of the door) for 10 minutes (or however much longer the rhino will be there). I've got 30 minutes on my alter self - and all of its buffs will similarly be cut down.

Then, after all that, it will come in, I'll throw another summons behind it - effectively trapping it unless it wants to squeeze past the summons on the way out...

If that is amenable - we can proceed with that: Load Crossbow behind full cover, Fire Crossbow from regular cover; Rinse, repeat until I am out of ammo or the summons runs out.
Myrridin

12-06-05, 04:07 PM
that's amenable to me. I just couldn't figure out how to proceed, while still playing this smart. So you'll both shoot at each other every other round, until you're out of ammo, and it is too.

Wow...that's 37 shots for you, and 19 more for it. Lots of rolling...joy.

I tell you what, to avoid that many linkings, I'll only link the actual shots that hit, fair enough? Given the amount of time, I believe you'll be able to use your wand to heal up after all the shooting too.

As she closes to within 5', he gets an attack with his spear at her. (AoO: 19+8=27 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 913) Damage: 6+4=10 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 914))

The spider screams in pain, and attempts to stab Daeren with one of her large daggers. (Attack: 1+7=8 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 915)) But she misses badly.

I won't be on much today - I'm home with my kids and under the weather from a combination cold and a bout with conjunctivitis... So please feel free to improvise from this:

1. Pull another animal from the bag of tricks and throw it beyond the drider - order the animal that appears to attack. If a bear is summoned - it will definitely try to start a grapple. If the unknown spell is actually another protection from x spell (so the animal couldn't attack), it will merely block the path to escape.

2. Drop the longspear, draw my waraxe and fight with my waraxe. If it appears to be hitting too much, use expertise to reduce its chances.

3. If it manages to get caught in a grapple, try casting a ray of enfeeblement on it (twice if the first one fails).

4. Kill it...

Sorry to hear that you and your kids are under the weather. I hope you feel better soon.

Daeren reaches in to the bag of tricks at his belt, and throws another animal, this time behind the Drider, trying to pin her in place. (Bag of Tricks: 16 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 919)) To Daeren's incredible luck, a brown bear pops out behind the Drider. Daeren drops his longspear, and pulls his waraxe out with the rest of his action.

The bear, newly summoned, shakes its head once, and then tries to claw the drider. (Claw Attack: 1+13=14 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 920)) It is obviously disoriented, as it misses badly in it's first attempt to kill the foul abberation.

The drider screeches loudly at Daeren, "More pets! You're all the meal I need."

It full attacks the dwarf, hoping to kill him, and not have to deal with the roaring bear behind it. (Dagger 1: 4+7=11 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 921), Dagger 2: 10+7=7 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 922), Bite: 8+3=11 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 923)) It misses on all three attacks, much to Daeren's delight.

The map will stay the same as the last picture of it, with the exception of a brown bear pinning the drider next to the doors.

Drider -18/?? hp, Unknown Spell [Rnd ??]

End of Round 2b

Daeren attacks with his mighty dwarven waraxe. (Attack: 2+12=14 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 924)) But his skill seems to have partially deserted him now, in his moment of need.

The bear tries to end this fight. (Claw 1: 17+13=30 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 925), Damage: 8+8=16 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 926), Claw 2: 17+13=30 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 927), Damage: 2+8=10 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 928), Bite: 1+8=9 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 929)) It swipes with two of it's huge paws, and the drider's ichorous blood rains across the walls and floor. It shrieks in pain as the Bear attempts to pull it in to a crushing grapple. (Bear Grapple Check: 17+16=33 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 930), Drider Opposed Grapple: 16+10=26 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 931)) The drider is grappled in the bear's deadly embrace.

The drider tries to break free of the brown bear's claws. (Drider Grapple Escape: 16+10=26 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 932), Bear Opposed Grapple: 9+16=25 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 933)) It breaks free, but finds itself in a vulnerable position.

Daeren 50/60 hp, Alter Self [end of fight]
Awk 25/25 hp
Drider -44/?? hp, Unknown Spell [Rnd ??]

End of Round 3b

Daeren sees the weakened condition of the Drider, and tries to destroy the foul creature. (Attack: 18+12=30 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 934), Damage: 1+4=5 (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/searchroll.asp?username=SpearOfFangs#163 935)) His swing doesn't do the most damage he's ever done, but in the drider's condition, it's enough. It collapses in front of the doors, it's blood spilling down the stairs and over the bear's claws. The bear gives it one more swip, and tears the head nearly off the drider's body.

Daeren briefly rests the head of his axe on the floor, taking a small breather after the extended fight with the drider. He then decides to look around the room he's been fighting in.

After careful examination of the throne, he finds that what he thought was the standard pole stuck in to the throne actually appears to be a spear, shoved head first into the solid stone of the once mighty dwarven throne. The shaft seems to almost hum with audible anticipation once Daeren gets close to it.

I will leave the rest for you. Suffice to say that the fight went a lot faster, and easier, with the brown bear involved.

The quivering spear is your Dragonbane Longspear +1, feel free to describe it, and anything you do after your quest in the log here.

I had a good time running it, though I'm sorry that it wasn't more of a challenge for you. I'll have to look at how I did this one, and see where I went wrong. :)

Well, judging from the rewards of the individual encounters, I would say that it is likely because the first two challenges weren't EL6, but rather EL5 - which is a small difference, but a reasonable one.

Also, the presence of my bag of tricks makes a huge difference (mostly the reason why I got it in the first place.

Do not worry about it not being "a challenge" - you had me pretty scared throughout - the vampire in the first encounter (which was extremely deadly until I realized it was a vampire spawn...) had me turning over trying to find a solution...

The drider definitely required thinking outside of the box - because my longer ranged capabilities are definitely limited.

In any case - I had a lot of fun on this as well - thanks again.

I'll add my own endings when I have more time.

Retrieving the spear from its resting place for so long, Daeren is satisfied. He hefts it up and is surprised how light and balanced it is. The tip of the spear is fashioned in a design of a dragon breathing ice spikes and the length of the shaft is covered in runes of ancient dwarvish carpentry.

A thing of beauty - he pities that it has been locked away for so long from the rest of the world.

---------------------

Returning to Gladius took longer than expected and Daeren was quite relieved to finally be home.

It has been a long trek Daeren - but there's little time to rest - for there are those who need you help nearby he says to himself mostly as he walks through the city gates.

His first stop is with the historian who gave him the location to start looking. Telling him the entire story of the quest and the fruits of his labor - the historian looks especially pleased and asks that Daeren allow him to document the whole event in his books so it could be chronicalled for all time. He then busily spends a few hours sketching the majestic spear before Daeren heads off to his home for a well deserved rest.
