Uranedal isn’t the type of guy who had to work much in his life. Actually, Uranedal was lucky since he was born.

His father, Daladin, is a rich merchant lord of the gnome settlement of Redleaf, north of Gladius.

Born amongst the finest things material life has to offer, Uranedal developed high appreciation for everything which is a form of art. From precious jewels to music, from statues to tapestries, Uranedal spent a big part of his life admiring and cooperating with famous Gnome artists.
Daladin encouraged this attitude of Uranedal, and he took care of inviting to his mansion every artist passing near the Readleaf small town.

When Uranedal was 40, Daladin decided to send him as an apprentice to an old wizard leaving in a small village nearby.
Uranedal was far from happy with that. He liked the way of living he had up to that point. The girls, the art, the fun.. everything was there just to grab. Daladin however convinced Uranedal that he should have mastered Magic to earn a seat in Redleaf council when his father would have retired. Furthermore, he was by far the smartest among his brothers and sisters and he was the right man to become the Mayor of Redleaf in future.

The training years were the worst years in Uranedal’ life. He lived in a very essential home, the village was right in the middle of a forest and only elves could manage to find the way in or out. Thril-Galas, and old-style elf abjurer, tried to teach Uranedal his art, but Uranedal refused to embrace a single portion of Magic, unwilling to give up anything. “Why should I give up an entire school of magic when I can have all of them?”

To spend his (rare) free time while in this isolation he started sculpting the rocks he could find in the forest nearby, with the help of the local guides. Over the course of the 25 years spent learning from Thril-Galas, Uranedal mastered the art of sculpting and now he secretly dreams of having his pieces exposed in the capital’s museum.

When Uranedal finally moved back to Redleaf, he felt a bit strange. All the material things he used to love, didn’t satisfy him as much anymore (beside nice looking gnome females, obviously).

After a couple of years spent travelling around the continent to meet other fellow sculpters, he decided it was time for a different challenge. He packed his essential belongings and left toward the city of Gladius, willing to prove is valor both on the battlefield and in art galleries

Skeletal Minion: A 1st-level necromancer using this variant can begin play with an undead minion (a human warrior skeleton). Obtaining this minion takes 24 hours and uses up magical materials that cost 100 gp. This creature is a loyal servant that follows the necromancer's commands and accompanies her on adventures if desired. If the skeletal minion is destroyed, the necromancer suffers no ill effects and may replace it by performing a ceremony identical to the one that allowed her to obtain her first servant. At 1st level, the skeleton is completely typical, but it gains power as the necromancer gains levels. The skeleton has a number of Hit Dice equal to the necromancer's class level. Add one-half the necromancer's class level to the skeleton's natural armor bonus. Add one-third of the necromancer's class level to the skeleton's Strength and Dexterity scores. A necromancer using this variant permanently gives up the ability to obtain a familiar.

Optional Information

- Always try to set up an ambush using hide and move silently. Remember to have Aiewae make her own spot and listen checks as well.
- If spells fail Snaga is in trouble. Use x-bow, fire a shot then retreat. Next round run to maximum distance and reload. Redo from start. (Hopefully his goblin 30’ speed should give him enough distance to load and fire and not enter melee.)
- Never cast a spell so as to provoke an attack of opportunity. Either take a 5 foot step or if that is, for some reason, impossible cast defensively.
- Use Aiewae to deliver all touch attacks.

I hit a "lucky" day at work to start this quest, so i'm sorry to delay my introduction and editing your characters in.

I'll usually be "full" online 7 GMT - 12 GMT so expect most more fight related updates from me to come at that time or on the weekends.
Tue(shorter,later)-Thu(never) are exception to this, see my pitlord profile for the explanations on this.

I'll do a Status block in the first post once the fighting has started,
and also track the remaining spells there.

About Spell lists: I'll want a full memorized(with open slots if you want to, you'll have time between weeks to renew them) list from each of you, if you don't want to take your currently memorizeds. They'll be due to saturday evening GMT, when you should already have decided on where to go from the options i'm about to present. that's all for now, i'm off to working..

Feel free to post up your RP introductions as you like. Assuming you start in the Gladius Tavern - is a good meeting point

Uranedal is quietly drinking the elven wine Lelenia ordered.. He keeps looking at her and he decides his new masterpiece will have her as the subject.

For a few, long minutes his mind is busy thinking at how he could portrait such a beauty.. then he suddendly realizes that his friends are talking and he don't understand nothing of what they actually just said.

A bit embarassed, he clears his voice and asks: I'm sorry Snaga.. I was a bit lost in my thoughts.. What were you saying?
TelinArtho

01-17-08, 02:24 PM
Vallgar slams his hand on the table.

And you win again. Looking back from his game of dominoes, Vallgar is inflamed. I swear - I will never win against him. Never! Best dominoes player I have ever met...

He takes a deep breath and shakes Turon's offered hand. You're right of course. No sense in getting upset about it - it is just a game after all.

The two clean up the game and return to the table with Uranedal and Snaga. So - where are we off to again?
The Dread Dormammu

01-18-08, 03:41 AM
I'm sorry Snaga.. I was a bit lost in my thoughts.. What were you saying?

"Spells master Gnome, I was asking you what Spells you thought most prudent for the journey." Aiewae Flutters in and Qwarks to Snaga "Op pof dbo lffq uifjs dzft pgg uif Ibmg-Fmg" "Quite so, dear girl."

Anyone have any ideas for broad tactics before we go in?
whitebaron

01-18-08, 02:09 PM
Lelenia stands up, and toasts to the three brave adventurers Good luck to you all, then. - Still, shouldn't you decide on where to go and what to take with you now? I'll be there in the other corner, celebrating my last victory, but if you need anything - just come by. Oh, i could tell you so many stories...
She moves towards some other gladiators, leaving you three a bit abruptly.

The Barkeep sees this, moves closer, and then says: Well, thats how it goes with women. I say, a good fine axe, some adventure, and beer, that's what counts. want one more? ah, if i could just return to my old days... If i were you, i'd know lots of places to go and find me some treasure...

without asking, he pulls four beers from behind the bar, and sits himself in the now empty spot. Ok, what are you up to? Gold, Gems, Dragons, Wisdom? I might be of some help, me Boromin the Mighty. (you look at him somewhat incredulous - the man looks like he's never ever been outside of gladius, but who knows...)

sorry for the slow start. gleemax off combined with a headache... will see what i can do later or tomorrow once it has succumbed.
CrazyArtificer

01-18-08, 02:50 PM
Uranedal stays silent for a while, then answers the Barkeep.
I can't speak for my companions, but I'd choose everything. Even though you gave us 4 options, they actually seem just one to me. Gold and Gems may be part of a dragon hoard and wisdom.. do you know any creature wiser than a Dragon?

A bit disappointed, he takes the beer and drinks it all at once, a good chunk of it trickling on the wizard vestment.

Just wanted to say that my girlfriend is going to stay in my house for the weekend, so I'll be offline the whole weekend probably. The only chance to be online is to have an argument with her tonight :) Knowing her is always possible.

I'd wait to outline tactics for a while, at least until we have decided where to go and who we are going to fight.
TelinArtho

01-18-08, 02:55 PM
Vallgar pushes the mug away and towards Turon. I'm sure he didn't mean to ignore you my friend. Here - have mine, I don't drink anyway. He gives the barkeep an evil stare - and then let's it drop.

Hmm - a dragon might be interesting...
The Dread Dormammu

01-18-08, 06:11 PM
Ragdahazt! We could delve into the lair of my old master! Such a library he had! I can remember reading all the classics there, in secret of course. His Libram was so extensive in fact, that I learned Infernal without once hearing a single syllable of it uttered. There's sure to be treasure there, even if it has been looted. I've often wondered what has become of it and there's no better place to look for precious stone than in a Dwarven mine.

Snaga's pupils widen and he begins to spin his tale.

Snaga spent his youth like most of his brethren; scraping out a living in abandoned Dwarven mines and scavenging the remains of fallen adventurers (he found that Halflings always had the best leavings). But a crippling fever left him physically frail and soured his taste for evil.

He was forced to learn how to use his cunning and his powers of persuasion in order to stay alive. When his clan was captured and enslaved by a powerful Drow Wizard: Ragdahazt, he managed to ingratiate himself to the powerful mystic, working as his librarian. Little did Ragdahazt know that this unassuming little helper to whom he only referred as “Snaga” (Goblin for “slave”) was learning the art of magic, in secret, while the rest of the clan slept.

Things moved predictably from there. Snaga became overconfident, Ragdahazt became suspicious, and Snaga “accidentally” gave a rival band of hobgoblins the location of a secret passageway that led directly into Ragdahazt’s inner sanctum. Snaga thought it prudent to leave at that point.

This is just a suggestion if we still don't know where we're going.
The Dread Dormammu

01-18-08, 06:36 PM
While Snaga speaks Aiewae flutters over to the skeleton and begins moving the Dominoes. "Play the bones, Play the Bones, The wind doth Howl o're night and stones. The price? A favor won or lost, skill will win or pay the cost."

Aiewae will play the skeleton for 1 "favor" that must be payed during the quest.
whitebaron

01-19-08, 02:32 PM
A skeleton playing dominoes with a Bird? Never seen such a thing .. gotta tell my wife later... But about your adventuring - don't you think it's about time to go? The gates of Gladius are closing soon, and you should be on your way, right away - Unless you want to spend another week here in my bar, contemplating options. He doesn't look like he dislikes the idea of having you eating and drinking for very much longer, still you believe there's some truth to his words.

If you find something of interest, be sure to drop in here - i'd love to tell the world your tale, just like [...]
He begins to ramble on about old times, past heroes, and deeds so long forgotten you could call it the history of the last Millenium.

with CA being absent the whole weekend we'll likely be a bit late for this weeks fight. If you want to go with snaga's storyline, just tell me so. Else, you could ask the rambling bartender, but whether his stories are just that or contain a bit of truth, is not that easily discerned.
CrazyArtificer

01-20-08, 06:09 PM
That is an extremely interesting story Snaga. I didn't suspect that you had such an interesting past. Mine is far less entertaining, for example.

I guess that a visit to this Library could be interesting. Do you think that hobgoblin band set everything to flames?

While speaking Uranedal takes out from his backpack a little cat and begins playing with him.. Lisca, say hi to our friends here! Don't be so silent!
Lisca: Meooow

Sorry for the delay I caused, but when it's possible I always spend the weekend with her. If we are really busy we meet on Saturday afternoon, and that should allow us to play a bit more..
TelinArtho

01-20-08, 07:26 PM
Doesn't much matter to me where we head. Gladius bores me though - so anywhere out of here would be a place to start.

And of course - the more dead bodies to be found - the better...

I'm open to whatever really. Sorry if I'm a bit off - a tooth has me well incapacitated this weekend (probably will be extracted or require an emergency root canal... blah)
The Dread Dormammu

01-20-08, 11:22 PM
Sounds as though it's decided then. The sooner we leave the better. The sun has almost set, and I prefer to travel under cover of night. Vallgar, I assume you and your, ahem, friend have some way to compensate for your lack of Nighteye?

Snaga tosses a goldpiece to the barkeep and gets ready to go.
TelinArtho

01-21-08, 12:15 AM
Yes - it is called a torch and a light spell...

Actually - a valid point, though I'm not really expecting night battles... @wb - switch out my Ray of Frost for a light cantrip please.
CrazyArtificer

01-21-08, 04:39 AM
I can leave immediately, I've already slept enough these days. I want to do something before I find myself covered with webs..

Uranedal puts Lisca to the ground, stand up and starts looking in his backpack.

Should we buy some food and wine from the Barkeeper before leaving?
whitebaron

01-21-08, 07:48 AM
Here, we go, here we go. - All on the house. Just tell me all about it, afterwards! always good to have new stories to tell.. [....] As he trails off into yet another annoying Hero story, you take the supplies and thank him, then decide to leave quick, before any other disruption could interrupt the journey again.
Looks like Turon and Aiwaie will need to play at another time

Our 3 fellow travellers and their respective Familiars/minions travel for quite a while into the night, but then, they see that they've been a bit deluded of the distance, leading to the mine. It seems a rest is in order.

Gladly, there's a sign along the road - 'Ye olde bar'. Maybe it will not be open, maybe it will - but you know, usually one could always drop in such a place in the midst of the night and still get a place to sleep.

the alternative, of course: stay in the open, sleep there. or don't sleep at all and sleep during the day - which i personally would not do at all - especially because it would force me to do a night battle since i don't want to ambush low-hp-wizards. *g*
CrazyArtificer

01-21-08, 08:57 AM
Hey, we're really lucky! There's an old bar right in the middle of nowhere :)

I'd say to have a look inside and get some rest. I really don't want to sleep on a tree tonight..
The Dread Dormammu

01-21-08, 07:52 PM
Snaga tries to hide his unease, he has no memory of this place. Successful sense motive checks will reveal that.

Er... Wonderful. Nothing worse than sleeping in the rain, particularly when you carry as much paper as we. I must say, I'm glad to be traveling with companions who share my sensibilities.

Hurmph, you don't suppose it's full of humans do you? If so Vallgar I hope you're willing to play the role of my "master."
TelinArtho

01-21-08, 09:37 PM
Bah - you worried about a few measly humans to distract you from your quest? They are of no consequence and if they were - they would soon be in service anyway... Vallgar gets an evil grin and looks back at Turon to see if anyone shares his sensibilities. He seems disappointed in the skeleton's blank stare though and this makes the grin disappear entirely.

You aren't nearly as fun as you were in Gladius. Careful - I might just trade you in for that toad we passed a little while back...

Oh - and yes we should stop here. Turon is a little thirsty for some ale - its his weakness these days.
CrazyArtificer

01-22-08, 05:00 AM
Then it is decided! Let's drop inside and let me offer a good dwarven beer to everyone

Uranedal moves closer to Turon and asks: Is dwarven beer ok for you, my thin friend? Maybe it'll make you funny again! Usually it worked for my old friend Mord!

I wonder if we could swap scrolls or copy spellbooks in a quest.. could be a nice way to increase our spellbook
TelinArtho

01-22-08, 09:38 AM
Not without the usual costs (and no - we can't pay each other for it either). Balance issue.
CrazyArtificer

01-22-08, 09:40 AM
not even swapping equally priced scrolls?
TelinArtho

01-22-08, 09:44 AM
We can use each other's scrolls (just like in a team fight for instance), but at the end of the quest - they are still the property of their original owners (and if they are used - they are counted against the original owner's expenses)
whitebaron

01-22-08, 11:03 AM
switching scrolls or spells would pose a balance issue, as your gold volume would be much higher than that of any other wizard who did not go questing - as to say, who did not pay credits.. expect the update to the inn in the evening - need to go from work now...
whitebaron

01-23-08, 10:23 AM
As you start to approach the bar, you can easily hear lots of voices,
still partying. It is about 3 in the night, but the noises seem to be
very lively still. Moving closer, you try to discern the language they are speaking - Seems like dwarvish. Rounding the last corner around a group of trees, you finally see a broken and shabby inn.
It seems this was built very fast, and without much care. Striding the last few meters, you see a dwarvish guard standing in front of the establishment.
Halt, who goes there?

After a quick explanation by Vallgar, he states Well, the party is closed audience only, but if you want to, you can take the back entrance, to see the owner. He'll be sitting right in the kitchen. There should be no problem to host you three for one day - If you don't mind the noise, that is.

Where should we take your goblin slave? I think, the stables should provide enough space and food for the likes of him.

most likely, we'll have to add an extra week to this quest, due to my current lack of time - which will be over next wednesday. sorry about that, but well- you can't help it.
TelinArtho

01-23-08, 12:35 PM
A little noise never bothered me. Come on worm - let's see about this owner fellow...

Vallgar does his best to direct the "worm" comment to Snaga rather than the dwarf before him...
CrazyArtificer

01-23-08, 01:04 PM
Uranedal pushes Snaga ahead and shouts Don't you hear the Master, useless thing? Come on, go to your proper place

Then he quickly enters the bar and whispers Vallgar Let's hope Snaga is still alive tomorrow.. Dwarves aren't famous for their ospitality towards goblinoids.
The Dread Dormammu

01-23-08, 06:01 PM
The two Wizards notice a remarkable change in Snaga, his normally large pupils have narrowed to slits, his gait normally straight and proud, has become a loping, limping shuffle. He bows low to both his masters and holds the door open for Vallgar . "If Master needs nothing more from Worm, Worm will to the stables."

Aiewae flutters in and lands on Vallgar's shoulder. "Yirch!* Master, Blackwing cannot see why you keep the little orcling as a Slave. My good master deserves a better servant than a crippled little orcling!" then in a low whisper to Vallgar "What do we do about Turon? Mustn't spook the Dwarvies. If you wish, Snaga can bring him back to the stables when the coast is clear."

*A curse in Giant

Sound like a good plan? Snaga will sleep in the stables (with Turon to guard him) and use Aiewae's Empathic Link to keep him appraised of the situation inside in case the Dwarves get rowdy.
CrazyArtificer

01-23-08, 07:21 PM
Sure it seems a nice plan.. I could also leave Lisca in the stable, if you ask. Maybe it looks a bit more normal than a skeleton :)
The Dread Dormammu

01-23-08, 09:14 PM
That's a great idea! Swapping familiars will keep us aware of each other's situation.
CrazyArtificer

01-24-08, 04:38 AM
Uranedal, a few steps inside the tavern, stops and assumes a worried face. Uh, oh.. Lisca I fear that you can't stay here.. I'm sorry He puts the little cat out of the backpack and poses it to the ground, mentally ordering him to reach the stable and keep an eye on Snaga.
TelinArtho

01-24-08, 09:54 AM
Bear in mind that Turon is not a familiar and does not have an empathic link with Vallgar. He will be left with Snaga under the orders of "Defend this person" (with Snaga as the person in question). Hopefully that will be enough...
whitebaron

01-25-08, 09:25 AM
With little ado, the two wizards can hire a room and a little to eat for themselves, while snaga is perched in the stables between the horses, with only his rations to eat. Your sleep is not exactly what you would call rejuvenating this night. Strangely enough, the partying noises stop all at once at dawn.

Uranedal and Vallgar decide, that some things are best left unexplained, and go to fetch Snaga from the stables. Oddly enough, he seems to be the only one that did sleep pretty well.

Travelling further towards the mine proves to be of little interest - everything but the occasional dead animals and the mandatory scavengers they attract.

Now, closing in, Snaga seems to be especially eager to be there fast. When you four round what he calls "the last forest before the mine", you can already see the last ascent - a steep slope towards a wide open cavern entrance.

Before it, you see the looming figure of a large humanoid, playing with his little blackbrown bear cub. It seems he hasn't noticed you yet. But this is only a matter of time.
TelinArtho

01-25-08, 10:08 AM
Instinctively, Turon grabs the bow from his shoulder and begins nocking an arrow. Vallgar is quick to stop him however.

No need to be so hasty my good friend. There's always a good reason why a bear would keep around a human slave. Always.

Vallgar draws a vial from his robes and drinks it down with a flourish.

So who wants to find out what the bear wants?

Drink a potion of Mage Armor.
CrazyArtificer

01-25-08, 11:00 AM
Uranedal pulls out from his scroll case a Buffing scroll and whispers Are you joking? I don't think the bear is the master, Vallgar. By the way, I don't think we should approach all by the same direction. It's better to send one ahead and the other two to the flanks.
Me and Snaga can hide better than you, I believe, so I suggest we flank while you and Turon move forward
whitebaron

01-25-08, 12:08 PM
Looking again, Vallgar can see that the humanoid has two heads instead of one, and figures it out quite quickly:
The bear seems to be his pet or hunting "dog"?

there are not many more giants that look like this, so easy to figure it out - an Ettin. (knowledge nature: 6 by vallgar)

it seems i misfigured the color of the bear for the CR,

so: it should be a brown bear, albeit very small. (for rp purpose: brown cub. for stats: elite black.)
TelinArtho

01-25-08, 12:20 PM
Fine - I'll talk with the bear then and you guys can go take care of his slave then.

Turon - let's set up over here and wait for them to get into position. I'll wait for the cry of the whippoorwill.

In all seriousness - none of us wants to be in melee with this thing or its bear. All of my save effects are Fort-based or have a significant less chance of effecting the giant due to type.

I can do a sleep on the bear and ray of enfeeblement on the ettin - but someone's better off disabling the giant so we can do a CDG rather than try to whittle through his HP. If we are forced to go through his hp though - I would have to go with spectral hand and chill touch mostly.
CrazyArtificer

01-25-08, 12:24 PM
I agree that no-one wants to close in melee. The main idea is just to flank him so that they would have to focus on a single enemy at a time, while the other 2 save or dies on them, either with sleep or color spray.

Alternatively, if the map allows it I could just web them and summon a swarm.
whitebaron

01-25-08, 12:30 PM
neither sleep nor color spray is a save or die spell on an ettin. it has 10 hd. - lots of hd, and good fort save, as all giants go
i'll put up a map once you go closer. currently you seem to be "safe"
TelinArtho

01-25-08, 12:32 PM
Sleep and Color spray will be ineffective against the 10HD giant. The swarm might not be a bad idea though - even if web isn't an option. With Snaga's Hideous Laughter (better save DC than mine) - and the swarm - the giant wouldn't be able to go anywhere while the swarm munched on him. Sleep on the bear would then allow it to be CDGed or just simply attacked by Turon and other more mundane attack methods if sleep fails.

Snaga's fireball might not be a bad backup option as well...
CrazyArtificer

01-25-08, 12:39 PM
Yes, obviously I was talking about the bear for sleep or color spray. I also have a grease scroll to use with the swarm.

I thought of using that scroll against a grappler, but I don't think the ettin will have an easy time with those balance checks
CrazyArtificer

01-25-08, 03:28 PM
I may not be available in the weekend. If I will not reply tomorrow by 3 PM gmt +1 use this tactics for Uranedal

1) Agree with Snaga and Vallgar a serie of spells to cast.
2) If that's not possible just cast Sleep or Color Spray on the bear, then swarm the ettin (web if possible)
3) If the ettin somehow survives this and we need to bring his hp down use crossbow/alchemist's fire. Use a magic missile from memory or another damaging spell only if the situation is desperate
The Dread Dormammu

01-25-08, 04:23 PM
The three Wizards begin to discuss their plan muttering arcane phrases in a kind of mystic shorthand, and Snaga can't help but grin as there is nothing he enjoys more than working up a froth of spells. "If they get out of the web someone else can Sleep the bear while I hit the Ettin with Laughter!" Snaga draws a Scroll of Web.

Snaga's favorite strategy is to Web and then Summon Swarm, (despite the fact that it rarely works in the arena) so he'll root for that. He draws a scroll of Web so U can use Swarm. Good thing Snaga speaks Orcish, giant, and Goblin (only DC 5 to understand the giant).
TelinArtho

01-25-08, 04:25 PM
Okay - so I guess we need a map to tell us whether web is even an option...

Vallgar will go with a ray of enfeeblement hopefully before the web to make it harder for it to get out...
CrazyArtificer

01-26-08, 09:06 AM
Sounds like a good strategy, my friends. I'll go to the left, you, Snaga, go to the right.
Said this, Uranedal draws an Entangling scroll and starts moving silenty and hidden to flank the 2 things.
whitebaron

01-26-08, 10:39 AM
ducking to the ground, to be a bit less visible, you discern the surroundings and come up with a battle plan - swarm and web, it will be.

trees and the cave entrance could be used as anchor points for webs. If he detects you to soon, it might be bad luck for webbing - depends on move silently and other actions.

Everything not on the path, is slightly overgrown - concealment 25%, but also harder to move - half speed.

edit: it would be best if you gave me about the positions you want to go to, and i'll roll up hide and move silently.
CrazyArtificer

01-26-08, 01:23 PM
Uranedal will move along the outer edge of trees. Cast Mage Armor from the buffing scroll just before leaving, then move along the trees on H line, near our position. When I reach the last one, move (prone is fine) following the outer line: A-U-R. Then j3 and get ready to cast.

Who summons the swarm? If it's me just move closer to i9 if needed.
The Dread Dormammu

01-27-08, 12:32 AM
Snaga will do something similar on the opposite side (but not go prone). He's got to get close enough to cast Web from scroll.
whitebaron

01-27-08, 07:36 AM
i'll roll up hide/move silently for Uranedal and Snaga. Where will Turon and Vallgar go? wait or move closer? or wait for some signal and then move closer? if the ettin moves away from the trees or entrance, the whole webbing might be failing...
TelinArtho

01-27-08, 10:15 AM
Vallgar will hang back for a a minute or so - keeping an eye on the ettin. If the ettin moves at all from the entrance - Turon will start shooting arrows and Vallgar will ready to cast Ray of Enfeeblement when the ettin is close enough.

If the time passes successfully - Vallgar will cast Sleep from his current location (I believe he is close enough - if not - close to the maximum range) and get the bear with it.

Note that web has medium range - so Snaga does not need to go that close.
Vallgar and Turon can go to the cover behind the tree, which makes them less visible, and takes them into the 130ft range Vallgar needs to cast sleep.

Ok, so thats the current situation:

Snaga and Uranedal duck into the underbrushes, leaving Vallgar back at the trees. Vallgar is astounded how much noise those 2 sneaks can do right next to him, with the giant above not noticing - but he decides to not mention that to them. (you were very close to get identified in round 1) . As time passes, they seem more accustomed to the surroundings and sneak on, more and more silently. Snaga buys his time a bit further away, but Uranedal, knowing he has to get closer in order to summon the swarm without harm to himself, overestimates his stealth and is heard by the Ettin. (surprise round gone)

The Ettin yells: Halt, who goes there? Show yourself, weakling! - Interestingly enough, all of you understood what he said. He draws both of his morningstars and tries to make out the hidden Uranedal, but fails.

Round 8:
Vallgar (sleep on bear)??
Turon (arrow)??
Snaga (sleep)??
Uranedal (swarm)??

i presume your actions stay the same, since he did not move - yet. he could not make out anyone of you. Especially, since he seems to search for Uranedal, who is hidden pretty good.
CrazyArtificer

01-27-08, 11:59 AM
How many ft is each letter/number?

Uranedal will summon a bat swarm, as close as possible to the ettin. then he will stand up and start moving back, slowly. As I read it you don't have to stay close to the swarm for it to have any effect.
TelinArtho

01-27-08, 01:36 PM
Yes proceed with sleep. Snaga should do the web to catch the ettin (at least).

Vallgar will shoot if the ettin moves at all.
The Dread Dormammu

01-27-08, 02:16 PM
Snaga reads the scroll and has the familiar sticky sensation of Webs flowing out of his mind and into reality! He hastily weaves a massive web to Ensnare the giant and its pet.

"Mirdautas vras, Zanbaur!"* He continues in Orcish, throwing in a few Goblin and Giant words in an attempt to imitate Ettin-speak "Surrender, and throw down your weapons. My goblin army may spare you."

*Translated from Orcish "It is a Good day to Kill, Elfson!"

Cast web and try to get both bear and Giant, if this is impossible just get the Ettin, unless the bear is coming at me. Can the above be used as a Bluff or Intimidate?

Round 8:
Vallgar starts to cast sleep on the bear.
Turon readies to shoot the Ettin on movement.
Snaga webs the entire area, glueing it between the Cavern entry and a nearby tree.
Uranedal starts to summon a Swarm. (bats?, rats?, spiders?)
The Ettin yells Kill the Goblin! to his Bear, and bursts free of the webs.
The bear moves, and is now outside of the webbed area.

Round 9:
Vallgar finishes sleep on the bear and ... ?
Turon ??
Snaga ?
Uranedal finishes casting the Swarm and moves backwards again, maintaining concentration (standard-action required for this)
The Ettin ???
The bear is asleep.

Notes:
If Uranedal had not succeeded in hiding before the swarm, it would have attacked him, since he is closer to the swarm than the Ettin!

Also, Web is not the best option against a creature with high strength. Still, it will hinder him a short time, most likely 2-3 rounds.
CrazyArtificer

01-27-08, 05:10 PM
I specified it's a bat swarm. However please note that Uranedal it's not so dumb to cast a swarm just to be killed from it :P

I'll keep pulling back until I see I'm in danger from the Ettin.
TelinArtho

01-27-08, 07:16 PM
Turon will begin firing once he has a sight on the ettin again. If sleep works on the bear - its time to start pumping damage into the ettin. Start with spectral hand from memory and then shocking grasp from the scroll. Follow up with a chill touch from memory. If the ettin comes close to me - interrupt with a ray of enfeeblement after placing Turon between myself and the ettin. Oh - might as well move to 105ft for Turon - so he doesn't have a range increment penalty.
The Dread Dormammu

01-27-08, 08:26 PM
Seeing the bear burst forth from the Webs causes Snaga's heart to quaver. But that, sharp deadly part that lives in every wizards' mind rushes to the for and mystic syllables part his lips.

If Vallgar's Sleep fails, then Sleep on the Bear. If sleep Succeeds then cast exped. retreat and hope the swarm can finish off the ettin.
TelinArtho

01-27-08, 08:29 PM
Hold off on the fireball for the moment - it will automatically take out the swarm and if the webs delay the ettin even for one more round (it still has to make appropriate strength checks to move), then we get that extra round of damage out of the swarm. Also - if it gets nauseated for a round or more (rolling low saves for the win!) - all the better...
The Dread Dormammu

01-28-08, 02:44 AM
Wow you check regularly, I think I edited that part about the fireball out about 30 seconds after I posted it.

Round 9:
Vallgar finishes sleep on the bear and casts Spectral Hand from Memory (-1)
Turon moves a bit closer and fires a bowshot at the partially visible Ettin (close, but missed)
Snaga casts Expeditious Retreat from memory
Uranedal finishes casting the Swarm and moves backwards again, maintaining concentration (standard-action required for this)
The Swarm moves to the Ettin, covering him. (6, fort-to easy)
The Ettin tries to move out of the web, but does not move far - 5ft, still webbed, and bleeding(-1)
The bear is asleep.

Round 10:
Vallgar casts chill touch. (4, fort-to easy)
Turon shoots again??
Snaga ?
Uranedal concentrates on the Swarm and moves back again
The Swarm covers the Ettin (3, fort-to easy)
The Ettin ???
The bear is asleep

Ettin -14/xx entangled in the web, bleeding
Bear xx/xx sleeping
Vallgar 18/19 3/4 chill touch, spectral hand

map once i'm home or the ettin breaks free.
the ettin moved towards the gnome. whether this is because he has less web to cover or to pounce on the gnome, can not easily be discerned
CrazyArtificer

01-28-08, 06:35 AM
Let's hope the Ettin fails a save, sooner or later. In the meanwhile Uranedal orders Lisca to come out of the backpack and to start moving towards Vallgar making as much noise as it can (hopefully misleading the Ettin.)
whitebaron

01-28-08, 10:27 AM
give me three more rounds worth of actions please - i need to progress this a bit. :)

i assume: Vallgar keeps touching. Turon keeps shooting. Snaga does ??? Uranedal does ??

want to get inside that mine. ;)
CrazyArtificer

01-28-08, 10:36 AM
Uranedal will mantain the concentration until the ettin gets closer than 40 ft. Lisca, Uranedal familiar, will just try to make noise moving near to Vallgar and Turon, in an attempt to buy Uranedal some time and some more time for the swarm to interact.

When the Ettin is within 40 ft stop mantaining concentration, cast Expeditious retreat from my buffing scroll (already in hand) and move FAR. Keep moving away until the Ettin is 60 ft away, then take a chance for firing the crossbow.
Resume moving when he's closer than 30 ft. Keep moving/shooting that way.
TelinArtho

01-28-08, 10:44 AM
I wanted Vallgar to start with Shocking Grasp from the scroll - but I guess that can wait until after the chill touches.

Turon will continue firing.

If the ettin comes Vallgar's way - I might have to revise tactics - but that will depend on how things are looking.
The Dread Dormammu

01-28-08, 01:41 PM
Snaga coup De Graces the bear with his X-bow (retreat and sleep it if it survives). Then hands his last thunderstone to Aiewae and commands her to drop it from a safe height on the Ettin (it would be nice if it couldn't hear us). Then Snaga will start hitting the Ettin with x-bow but will retreat if approached.
Hopefully we can keep the giant running in circles with a series of strategic retreats.
whitebaron

01-28-08, 02:04 PM
@telin: if you want me to, i can still change it - just re-read the post and must have had an oversight on the shocking grasp. i remembered shocking grasp, then re-looked, and found only the touches...

@snagas CDG: you have to be adjacent to the bear to CDG - so one round move to adjacent(half speed in overgrowth), next round full attack CDG.

- ok?
will update after i hold this weeks fight.
TelinArtho

01-28-08, 04:46 PM
I would prefer to have the shocking grasp in first. The potential of the strength damage is well outweighed by the damage potential of the shocking grasp.

thanks

Recall spectral hand and chill touch with pearls of power before moving in.
The Dread Dormammu

01-29-08, 03:57 AM
It seems as though Snaga is crawling over the Giant's corpse before it even touches the ground. While he rifles through its belongings he Speaks in a hasty Draconic to the other Wizards.

"Very keenly fought my friends, think you he was a guard of some sort?

If so, best keep the web up till it evaporates. Might be able to Snag a horde of Hobgoblins should one come boiling out.
Lads, if you'd be so kind, I must remember to enchant the next foe we face, once we're down in the caves it might help to have some large brute fighting for us to plug up the hole so to speak.

That's an amazing spell Vallgar, the floating hand, where did you learn that trick? I must remember to add it to my repertoire, you'd like that wouldn't you Aiewae my sweet? Oh that's right she doesn't speak Draconic... anyway she hates to get close enough to strike out with one of my spells but now that I've learned of this handy form of necromancy..."

He prattles on for quite some time, it's clear that the thrill of victory is an emotion he has yet to master.

Let's see if Snaga can use Suggestion to get one of the next enemies to fight for us in the third battle. Snaga recalls Exped. retreat using one of his pearls and prepares Touch of Idiocy, and Ray of frost.
CrazyArtificer

01-29-08, 09:12 AM
Uranedal closes in, a bit silent.
He watches the remains of the Ettin and starts evaluating the opportunity to take away his head as a trophy. Then he decides it's better to do that when they leave, rather than now.

Speaking in Draconic, he says:
Snaga would you be able to enchant someone to fight for us? Amazing..I hope you will enchant the most fearsome enemy so we will have a double benefit

Then, picking Lisca from the ground and caressing the little cat he moves closer to Turon and tells, in common:
You're the most impressive undead archer I've seen in my whole life! Congrats Turon.. I'll call you Bullseye, if you agree

Uranedal won't bother memorizing new spells right now, keeping his open slot for an harder time
TelinArtho

Seems this one was just a little too tall for himself. Now - let's see what we have inside.

01-30-08, 03:49 PM
After scavaging the remains of the Ettin, the three wizards decide it's time to enter the cave. Snaga will lead the way, in order to reach the library quick - who knows, what other monsters might be guarding - and why are they even guarding? Having the distinct feeling, that there must be something about this, you enter the cave. Since not everyone around has darkvision, you lighten up Vallgars torch.

Following Snagas lead, you progress quickly and end up rarely in dead-ends. after around 6 hours into the cavern, you decide to take a quick rest. Snaga seems pretty excited, but he also understands that too much rushing is not that optimal. (time to change spells if you want)
TelinArtho

01-30-08, 09:35 PM
How much farther does this go Snaga? Seems to me that we should have come upon something by now - but perhaps I have underestimated the size of this place.

In case it matters - Turon will lead the party with Vallgar behind with the torch. In all cases, Turon should be directly in front of Vallgar (he uses him for soft cover :))

"Oh, indeed! The mines are quite extensive, but fortunately for us, librarys aren't the most mobile of commodities. We should reach the more comfortable sections soon where, undoubtedly, whoever is living here will have set up residence."

"Don't bother carrying that Torch Vallgar it's precisely for situations like this that I made this little pretty." Snaga gestures towards the torch and it rises to float above Vallgar's head. The other wizards notice the mummified elven hand that hangs around Snaga's neck begin to twitch and writhe.

Perhaps we should put Aiewae in the lead sneaking along as she can talk and tell us what she sees ahead, followed by Turon. Snaga will walk beside or behind Vallgar.

Do you think it's a good idea to keep everyone's hands free and have the torch float?

Spell wise I think I'll stick to what I said after we beat the Ettin "Snaga recalls Exped. retreat using one of his pearls and prepares Touch of Idiocy, and Ray of frost" and add one more thing, Hypnotism.
CrazyArtificer

01-31-08, 04:52 AM
Would you still be able to move concentrating on the hand and moving the torch? I guess we are better off with a busier hand, ready to drop the torch if needed
says Uranedal, smiling. Then he continues
If you think we aren't too far I'll try to have a look around to see what we can expect... maybe I can find a few footprints around

Said this Uranedal starts looking for any sign of people, creatures or whatever which passed recently. (Search check, take 20)
whitebaron

01-31-08, 06:51 AM
It's about 30 minutes walk to the inner sanctum. All you can find are footprints of heavy humanoid boots, normal sized, but heavy-weight within lots of dust and webs. They indicate about 2-5 creatures with about the same general size, and this path seems to be used irregularly. Whatever it is that walks this place - it's not the drow wizard.
CrazyArtificer

01-31-08, 07:42 AM
Hobgoblins says Uranedal pointing the footprints... It seems we are on the right path after all. I'll take some rest to change a few spells here.

Uranedal will change his lvl 0 spells with:
Flare, Disrupt undead, Detect Magic, Open/close.
Lvl 1 open slots will be filled with Shocking Grasp and Ray of Enfeeblement.
Lvl 2 one with Scorching ray.
whitebaron

01-31-08, 01:21 PM
After the short rest Uranedal needs to replenish his arsenal of offensive spells, you walk on. After some minutes of walking, you have a strange feeling, as if you are not alone.

Looking forward, you can see what it is that was bothering you - Three hobgoblins suddenly standing there, and awaiting you. While their posture is not really offensive, it is neither friendly. Behind you, you can hear the sound of crossbows being loaded.

The one seemingly the leader, with burnt face and lots of bruises, yells out SNAGA! - I always knew, you'd be coming back. Your little tip did us no good - many died just for the short sensation of killing a drowling - Not much good came from that, and now there's even another wizard moved in. I bet, you came to scavenge. Well, plans have changed now, didn't they? - We' ll give you one chance to escape from here unharmed. - Kill that stupid wizard in there with your friends, and take them wizardly things with you. We want to have peace here! - Go!

he points towards what Snaga knows to be the secret passage to the inner sanctum. Obviously, the time away from Gladius made him forget some of the paths here - he'd have thought it was a bit further..

But well, can't help it you're there now.

so, what to do now?
options are slim -
a) go in and try to kill a wizard
b) escape them hobgoblins with the only sensible approach known to them - killing. there are at least 5 of them - maybe more, since you can only see slits in the side of the cavern wall - obviously, some more changed while you weren't here, Snaga.
CrazyArtificer

01-31-08, 01:49 PM
Uranedal is very worried by the situation.
Despite hating hobgoblins, he's also a wise and patient person..

The most important thing is to quit this situation alive, and the three wizards can always confront with the hobgoblins in a better position later.

Fearing an hasty denial from Snaga, he quickly says:
There's no need to get angry... Calm down.
Snaga came here with some friends simply to do what you are asking: take the wizardly things. If that involves killing a wizard guarding them, it's not really a problem.
Am I right, Snaga?

Uranedal watches the goblin with an expression which can be easily read as: "Don't say no".
The Dread Dormammu

01-31-08, 06:52 PM
Snaga holds up a hand to silence Uranedal and shoots him a dark look.

As at the inn, the two wizards notice a remarkable transformation in Snaga, but where before he became a sniveling worm now, they now see a cold, evil grin spread across his face. Aiewaie fluffs her feathers up until she looks to be almost twice her size.

When he speaks it's with a greedy anticipation as if Snaga saw something he would very much like to eat.

He locks eyes with the leader.

[Translated from Goblin]
"Vrasubatburuk ug butharubatgruiuk!*

So cousin, you managed to kill Ragdahazt did you? He gave you boys some trouble? I thought you were a stronger arm than that Gul-Ogz! What a shame what a shame. After all, he was only a half-good wizard, not even a Wizard-hai like my servants here.

I would have thought once it came down to the Knife work you could have... Ah well it doesn't matter. So, more wizard troubles eh? Thats good, the slaves and I have been itching for a real fight. Where's he keeping himself? We'll show you boys what a real wizard can do when it gets down to the Hot, Wet, Knife-work and if you ask us with a real soft voice, we'll even give you some of his flesh for the trouble. From the looks of you it's been a while since you've had any real meat."

How dare you, meatball? Once our business here is done, we'll have to talk about your proper behavior towards your superiors, slave. And yes, you'll be a slave again, its all written about your face. Oh - and don't bother lying to me again, weakling.

It seems noone is intimidated today, as the goblin and the hobgoblin square off their fight in a tie. The sly and weak looking hobgoblin woman next to him whispers something in his ears. To you, she says in a slow and broken common:

Wel, let'ss not quarel about thiss. If them can bring him down, them wil heave our grattittude
You have the distinct feeling, that she's the real leader of the little tribe, but anyone wise would ignore showing that feeling right here, right now.

Oy, let's go boys!
The hobgoblins leave as sudden as they had arrived.

The entrance towards the secret passage is not that far away. in all likelyhood, it would take you 2-5 minutes through it to the inner sanctum.
Actions, buffs, go in or search out the hobbos?
TelinArtho

02-01-08, 10:34 AM
Vallgar takes out a potion and toys with it a moment. Let them go Turon. They aren't worth bloodying... yet.

Turon to lead through the secret passage. Vallgar holds a potion of mage armor before entering.
CrazyArtificer

02-01-08, 03:29 PM
Uranedal draws a new buffing scroll and quickly follows Turon, without saying a single word.

It's strange to see a gnome silent, but you can realize it's in a mixture of anger and fear, more ready for combat than ever
The Dread Dormammu

02-01-08, 04:19 PM
Aiewaie looks at her master. "That could have gone better."

Snaga lets out an exasperated sigh, "Or could have gone a great deal worse! What was I supposed to do? You know as well as I that if we'd shown any weakness they would have pounced on us then and there. At least now we might fight them on better ground!"

Snaga then hurries to catch up with his companions. "Allow me to volunteer for disrupting once things get rough. I think I might go into this fight invisible."

Snaga will draw a scroll of invisibility and cast it just before we exit the secret passage. He'll probably take ready actions to disrupt spell casting with magic missiles or fireballs unless we get an ambush. In that case he'll probably hit with Touch of idiocy.
The Dread Dormammu

02-01-08, 04:33 PM
"I also think it might be best if you both held onto these."

Snaga also hands over his "cure potions" to the two wizards one to each.
TelinArtho

02-01-08, 04:37 PM
What would I need this for? Here Turon - you take it.

Seriously - I'm not planning on getting hurt and if I do - a little bit of healing is not going to cut it... Plus - I do have scrolls of False Life if needed.
CrazyArtificer

02-01-08, 04:37 PM
Uranedal takes the potion and whispers Let's hope we don't need it. Thanks Snaga.

I don't plan to get hurt either, but maybe a single hp can save one wizard life :)
TelinArtho

02-01-08, 04:41 PM
Come to think of it - I think I will change things around. Stow the potion of Mage Armor, draw a scroll of False Life and cast it. If we're within minutes of the destination - I might as well have the 3hr buff up. And against a wizard, mage armor probably won't be needed anyway...
The Dread Dormammu

02-02-08, 03:40 AM
Snaga hands a thunderstone to Aiewae.
whitebaron

02-02-08, 04:28 AM
The time to find out is close - you are nearing a Large Stone Trapdoor.

Vallgar, is really boosted by his false life (13), Uranedal did cast a buff(if you want to, still need to tell me what from your buffing scroll should apply), Potions where switched, and its about time to layout a plan. (need your actions for surprise round and following round, should you win initiative)

The Trap Door would usually open easily from the other side.

This is how Snaga remembers it:

Snaga casts invisibility from the scroll, (share with Aiewae) before they enter the library, then moves to separate himself from the other wizards, as much as possible (don't worry about moving silently). He takes a ready action to disrupt casting with magic missile. Aiewae gains as much height as possible and drops the thunderstone on the wizard. If there are still guards around and they are close enough to get to Snaga then I might need to first cast hypnotism.

Buffs:
U, V Mage Armor
S Invisibility

Surprise Round: Snaga opens the secret door, to see the layout quite a bit changed. The desk and many wizardly things are gone, and on the right side of the Chamber, there is an altar obviously dedicated to the spider queen. The chamber is not lit.

In front of it, you see a rather young (for an elf anyway) drow woman, clad in black chainshirt and praying.

As Snaga opens the door, all of you can also hear a silver bell ringing. (It takes no spellcraft or knowledge skills to assume it is some form of alarm)

I wanted you to give me 2 rounds worth of actions... and all i get is prebuff and no options - please state what vallgar will do since he does not see the drow woman. Also, Actions for Turon are completely missing.
TelinArtho

02-03-08, 09:42 AM
Well - the ready would continue. I'm not sure what we can do for 2 rounds worth of actions when the initial map you gave us and the current one are so different.

Anyway - for Vallgar's action, he'll take a 5ft step closer, mentally order Turon to attack any opponent in range and continue to ready.

If the ready hasn't triggered by next round, take another 5ft step and cast the blindness on an available target or spectral hand if I still don't have a target.
whitebaron

02-03-08, 12:09 PM
still missing: turon attacks with bow/greatsword/fists ?

and: the map is not _that_ different. just a removed table to make movement easier.
TelinArtho

02-03-08, 12:45 PM
Oh - I thought I had specified to have his sword in hands. I see that I didn't now - but I did mean to.

Vallgar 5ft steps, orders Turon to attack anything visible, and readies blindness.
Turon closes and attacks. (miss)
Drow Woman uses Darkness-SLA on herself, defensively. she then moves away from Turon, drawing an AoO (miss), moves right past Snaga and into LoS of Vallgar. His readied Action triggers, missing due to the SR of the Drow.

Snaga and Uranedal are up next, and it seems this is no Wizard...

Obviously, a girl in drow society, armed with a whip(and rapier, both not yet wieled) and clad in armor(and buckler), can only mean one thing...

you can yourself chose who is first. does Snaga want to continue readying? Uranedal still casting shield?
CrazyArtificer

02-03-08, 08:10 PM
Uranedal will definitely cast shield.. it's better to raise AC against a drow with a rapier.
The Dread Dormammu

02-04-08, 03:35 AM
Snaga will cast mirror image, and then Tasha's Hideous laughter. Aiewaie will fly up and drop the thunderstone being careful not to hit Snaga.

Snaga casts Mirror Image and sends Aiewaie to drop the thunderstone. Only due to the fact that the drow is not armed, does she escape an AoO.

Round 2

Uranedal, seeing there's only one square left for melee attacks puts away the buffing scroll, then he casts a Magic Missile from memory on the drow.

In the following round he'll draw a "Touchy scroll" and cast spectral hand.
TelinArtho

02-04-08, 10:36 AM
Yes - proceed with spectral hand then ghoul touch from memory.

Turon will continue to attack and hopefully actually hit some time this century...
whitebaron

02-04-08, 11:05 AM
Turon did already hit for 11 - thats not nothing

Round 2 (continued)
Turon follows and attacks (11).
Vallgar cast spectral hand.
Drow Woman rebukes Turon since he seems to be the biggest threat (but the brave Turon resisted!) and takes a 5ft step back.
Uranedal casts Magic Missile from Memory (would be: 8, but somehow it gets drawn towards a spidery-brooch holding her cloak)
Snaga casts Hideous Laughter from Memory, and brings her down laughing.

When you're deaf, do you actually fall to hideous laughter? would make no sense to me, but it seems its not in the spell's description -

much luck with the SR here, btw.

i initially missed that i gave her a brooch of shielding, thats why i even rolled the dice. - sorry about that.

Important note about the light: It is only in the lower Room. You might have to do something about that sooner or later - that is, if she ever stands up again.
TelinArtho

02-04-08, 11:10 AM
I thought that was the attack roll... heh.

Anyway - yes laughter isn't stopped by being unable to hear. Its not like the casting of the spell is some joke that just can't be resisted :P

In case it is not clear - Turon will dice her up for the duration of the hideous laughter.

Keep the spectral hand going just in case she doesn't die from the greatsword attacks. After she is dead - recall blindness with a pearl of power.

Nice going my friend. Too bad I had to waste this incantation...

Vallgar moves over to the torch and picks it up.
whitebaron

02-04-08, 11:20 AM
i never write the attack rolls - i just write the results.

do the other wizards want to do anything while turon hacks at her?

else i'll roll up his next attacks until round 7/8
TelinArtho

02-04-08, 11:32 AM
if the others aren't attacking - Vallgar will offer his quarterstaff in melee rather than go for the torch.
The Dread Dormammu

02-04-08, 02:27 PM
"A Cleric?! Why those illiterate, Skal! No wonder they **Grumble Grumble** Hobgoblins!" The torch leaps up into the air and flies into Snaga's waiting hand. With a dark look on his face Snaga pounces at the drow, swinging the flaming brand furiously, if not terribly effectively. Aiewae, chattering curses, begins clawing at the Drow's face.

Aiewaie will aid another to help Turon hit while Snaga flanks and attacks with the torch.

When you're deaf, do you actually fall to hideous laughter? would make no sense to me, but it seems its not in the spell's description -

I always thought it was the throwing of the tarts that was "funny." You don't need to hear to like slapstick. It goes a little something like, "Take this! (throws pop tart)
CrazyArtificer

02-04-08, 02:43 PM
It's better to have a look at that Altar.. maybe there's something useful for us and will help understanding what a cleric is doing here.

Uranedal sees no purpose in casting spectral hand so he just move closer to the altar and tries to find any clue about the Cleric role.. and, more important, he tries to identify if the drow female wanders this place alone or not.

Uranedal will also keep an eye on the drow.. as soon as she recovers he will rejoin the fight again.
whitebaron

02-05-08, 06:27 PM
Turon cleanly cuts off the clerics limbs and is content that she won't rise naturally from this place again.

The altar seems to be a permanent one, but from the size and looks of it, it is only used by that one cleric. The library seems to be partially intact (you can take some scrolls as quest reward), though many books seem to have been replaced by the more clerical type - though they focus on Vallgar's expertise - Creating Undead. The entrance chamber is completely different to what Snaga remembers - Its more like a graveyard, filled with bones of various creatures, neatly stacked and catalogued.

i'll update expenditures and SL tomorrow(likely 20h from now), to tired now. feel free to do some further RP, hopefully we'll be able to finish this quest by next week tuesday.
CrazyArtificer

02-06-08, 02:57 PM
Uranedal takes the scrolls and tries to read them to see if they can be useful or not.
Then, he speaks loud So Snaga.. tell me.. is there any hope to find more useful arcane books or it's all gone? Don't tell me we came this far just to find a few scrolls..
The Dread Dormammu

02-06-08, 03:18 PM
Snaga wastes no time in plundering the library. "Have it. Have it. Need it. Oooh, The Oddesy of Nlazh-Kgrilnlmck! **mutter mutter** thought these were lost in the wars... Uranedal could use this one, heh." He begins piling the books in neat stacks using his Hand of the Mage and sits cross legged on the floor thumbing through some ancient history. Aiewae, becoming increasingly agitated, offerers a suggestion to the wizards. "Hobbo's will be back soon to see who won the fight. Master, you wouldn't want to scorch your precious readings would you?"

Let's hole up here and set up a barricade. (Are we allowed to do that?) Better move the books out of the way so that Snaga can use his fireball (he'd never harm a book).
TelinArtho

02-06-08, 03:26 PM
Vallgar seems wholely disinterested in the books about the place. At the familiar's comment though, he nods thoughtfully and soon Turon is helping to move the books into a corner. Vallgar keeps a vigilant eye out for anyone coming.

Vallgar isn't exactly the best to keep on watch - but he's better than nothing...
The Dread Dormammu

02-06-08, 03:40 PM
"Why my dear Uranedal, have no fear! Ragdahazt, kept several Arcanabula and he had at least one greatbook -er- Grimoire.

Though the Library is much changed since my last visit, and not for the better, I'm sure what we find will be more than sufficient. Be sure to check the contents and not just the spines too, Ragdahazt, liked to mark his spellbooks as ledgers and dusty histories.

Heh, I remember once he asked me to bring him his copy of Mordrath's Meditations and when I brought it he was surprised to find that it was in fact one of his old spellbooks! Heh heh heh he was quite incensed, for he had never even owned a copy of The Meditations and was in sudden and great need of it!"

For now Snaga will take only a scroll of mirror image and a scroll of web.
The Dread Dormammu

02-06-08, 03:50 PM
Snaga grunts as he lifts a particularly heavy history onto the growing pile.

"I must also say the place has taken on a bit more of a sepulchral tone. I'm surprised at you Vallgar I would have thought you would have assembled a full skeleton by now. After all there's a veritable menagerie!

And Uranedal, why don't you have a closer look at that Altar, It looks rather well detailed to my, albeit untrained, eye I'm sure an arch-sculptor like yourself should have no trouble turning it into a masterwork."
TelinArtho

02-06-08, 04:06 PM
Heh - missed that there were skeletons lying about...

All in due time. At the moment - I believe the hobgoblins are a more credible threat to us. And before I load up Turon's arms with some likely specimens for the future - it would seem prudent to ensure that the way out is not... riddled with bumps...

Vallgar's curiosity wins over him for a moment as he takes a look down at the bones nearest to him.

Ooh - these should be rather nice I imagine... but he shakes off the distraction and returns his focus down the corridor from where they came.
The Dread Dormammu

02-06-08, 04:35 PM
So there's the secret door and then what looks like the main door. Let's put empty bookcases up against them to barricade both (Can we also lock, or bar the main one?) We could also turn two of the bookcases on their side and use them for cover in the center of the room. Hopefully the Hobgoblins won't think to come at us from both sides. Let's stack the books on one side of the room away from the doors.
CrazyArtificer

02-06-08, 05:23 PM
So you are talking about at least one Grimoire eh? I want to see that book, for sure.

Uranedal looks again at the Altar, seeing if the material composing it is valuable enough for a masterpiece.

Then, he looks at the 2 other wizards and a bit puzzled he begins talking Looks like we are burying ourselves, if you want my opinion. Wouldn't be better to just sneak out or perhaps to find another exit?
The Dread Dormammu

02-06-08, 06:21 PM
"Master Gnome, I plan to load myself down with as many tomes as possible. I don't think I'll be able to move more than a hand-span at a time when I'm done. Unless of course there is a "floating disk" spell somewhere in here... I know not how you planned on moving all that marble, but no matter. The point is I'd rather fight them here and on our own terms.

No matter how strong they are, it will take them a few moments to batter down the doors and while they do that we'll be working up all manner of mystic bedevilments for them."
CrazyArtificer

02-06-08, 06:50 PM
Are you a goblin or a dwarf Snaga? Uranedal calms down Snaga with a gesture of his right hand I'm just joking. I didn't mean any offence to you. What I want to say is that barricading is something for dwarves or turtles. We should just find a way to surprise the hobgoblins... they'll come here armed to their teeth and with Garl knows what tactic.

If we are able to surprise them, we could instead cripple the most of their resistance way before they can react.

Perhaps sending Aiewae and Lisca in recognition can give us some more ideas
The Dread Dormammu

02-06-08, 07:17 PM
His anger cooled, the wizard part of Snaga's mind quickly reasserts itself. He seems to be talking to himself more than Uranedal.

"Hmm it is true. I find myself of two minds on the subject I would rather creep up and slit some throats than suffer a siege. But then again I'd rather suffer a siege than walk into an ambush of our own. If we feel the need to retreat, I could burn away the barricade. But I would rather use that fire to cook some Hobgoblins in their own fat. Those Hob's did have soft feet though; never even heard them untill they were right on top of us... Yes, I think we should adopt the way of the long lived wise old turtle.

However, I'm willing to put it to a vote. I vote we stay. Let them come to us."

Aiewae chirps, "Stay."

"Uranedal, you'll let us know Lisca's feelings on the subject I'm sure. Looks like it's up to the Necromancer and the archer.

What does Turon think?"
whitebaron

02-07-08, 04:12 AM
I can not give you any more expendables except for RP-scrolls of Floating Disc to transport things. the scrolls and library is for quest-reward-purposes, i don't want to affect your power level for the last fight - so everything you've got on you will have to be enough for the fight.

Barricading yourself in might be a nice idea, but i don't think it will work out. :) but lets wait for the vote.
TelinArtho

02-07-08, 08:11 AM
I don't know about these hobgoblins as familiar as Snaga does - but if can know for sure they will come for us - then I think we are better off here - where we can control the flow. I am not convinced they are going to come looking though - they were clearly scared of the elf-spawn there and they might think twice about engaging us after such a quick and decisive victory.

I certainly don't want to find that they've set up more murderholes elsewhere...

Vallgar trails off for a second - apparently listening to Turon.

Turon votes to get a move on. I think I am of a like mind - let's grab what we can and get on.

Turon immediately sets to packing away a few key skeletons as they are pointed out by Vallgar.
CrazyArtificer

02-07-08, 03:45 PM
Lisca agrees as well.
I'd just pack everything of value and use these nice Floating Disk scrolls around here to bring everything out.

Then, we could simply send our 2 tiny friends to see if they can tell us some useful informations about the hobgoblins.. otherwise we will just try to get out alive.

After all hobgoblins tend to respect pacts, right? We made a pact with them and fullfilled our part.. now they have to fulfill theirs.
The Dread Dormammu

02-07-08, 05:23 PM
"So be it. Lead on familiars"
whitebaron

02-08-08, 03:44 AM
After quite some discussion, the party grabs all seemingly of value to them, using some minor spells and incantations to transport them safely.
Following the lead of their familiars, they depart, using the main entrance for security measures. (after all, the hobgoblins were in the side tunnels).

As you leave, you can see that there were undead guards in front of the library, but it seems they are as mindless as you are used to them, when they have noone to call their master.

Wandering through the caverns, the wizards are already wondering whether there will be a hobgoblin ambush - when Aiewae finally chirps.. there's someone ahead ...

All of you can see him now clearly - it's the hobgoblin chief, that failed to intimidate Snaga - looks like he's anxious to righten that. (after all, how else should the others ever respect him again?)

Mage Armors are gone, but False Life is still running for its 13 HP

the grey area is in difference to the normal cavern map - its no pond in here. and some less pillars.

Lisca will share my square.
TelinArtho

02-08-08, 10:02 AM
Turon will take up the front corner of the starting area - closest to the hobgoblin.

Vallgar will be next to him.

Actions: Vallgar advances to (7,23) and casts Ray of Enfeeblement. Turon draws his greatsword while closing and attacks.
The Dread Dormammu

02-08-08, 08:54 PM
Though he had never told anyone this The Fireball spell had given Snaga a great deal of trouble. It was a Simple third circle Evocation that every wizard worth his salt seemed to be able to prepare, but for some reason it had eluded Snaga for weeks.

The first few times he had tried to cast it had met with dismal failure or at best a shower of green sparks. Even after he had copied it into his own spellbook he spent the majority of his preparation time trying to grab hold of it as if it was something slippery. Once it was locked in his mind it seemed to rush about as if it were trying to find it's way into the world.

So when Snaga saw the bugbear barreling towards him, all axes and fury. Snaga's nimble mind rushed through all the other possibilities first.

But now, as he touched the spell it seemed to him impossible not to cast. It came pouring out of his mind, roaring into reality. It seemed to him no force in the universe could stop it.

Snaga will start next to Vallgar but not blocking LoS for U. He casts fireball Making sure not to hit friendlies after Turon interacts with the Hobgoblin (could be an illusion after all). Next he will cast Shocking grasp with Aiewae as the toucher Unless the Hobgoblin makes it past Turon.

Does the 17 damage dealt to Turon reflect the DR5/bludgeoning?

Vallgar looks at the newcomer incredulously. How rude to interrupt us in this mannger. Go back and wait your turn like a civilized man and we'll deal with you shortly.

Vallgar stops for a moment, looking at Turon.

Oh - didn't realize you were a woman. Sorry.

Turon will continue hacking away and Vallgar casts Blindness on Danda. I would prefer to cast then move, but if the smokestick is up, there's no helping the move then cast...

BTW, I missed that Grorr went down. Use instead than Shocking Grasp a Scorching ray on the druid. Move out after attacking and then hit her with a Thunderstone as well. If she is blinded and deafened we should be safer.

Always move after attacking

@telin: no spectral hand remaining. you cast one in fight 1, recalled it, cast 1 in vain in fight 2, but recalled blindness (which you put to good use, though.) - wanna use the scroll or deliver the touch yourself? i believe turon goes attacking no matter what?

@all: i'd like to have this quest packed up and finished before wednesday, so: give me spells or expendables you want to use on the druid, spoiler(turon will see it this round anyway): there'll be an animal companion-viper as well. if the druid is dead it will flee, though.

Snaga finds it eerie how silent the fight has become. The Tri-wizards and their companions move softly only to break the silence with a hastily shouted spell.

Snaga will always move silently and try to keep line of sight with the Druid after casting, (gotta dodge that lightning).

Snaga will use his last pearl of power to recall Magic missile and ready to disrupt casting again.

After that he will cast touch of Idiocy with Aiewae as the toucher and have her deliver the spell to the druid.

If Snaga sees the snake he'll cast sleep on it.

Definitely move closer and Schorch'her!

Then feel free to use any memorized offensive spell to your liking. If not extremely needed do not use any expendable at this stage.

Cast and move silently away, always.

Uranedal accompanies every spell he casts with a sentence which shows it's great disappointment with people not fullfilling to pacts.

He literally shouts it, promising himself he won't never trust a single hobgoblin anymore.

Well Vallgar does still have a scroll of it - but I think we should be fine without it. Instead ready to cast MM on the druid on casting. Turon will go on with attacking the druid and ignoring the viper (until the druid is downed.

After MM, Vallgar will proceed with a ghoul touch from memory and move to touch himself. After that, if needed, chill touches. Preference is on the druid, but the AC is just as good if the druid is downed.

rewards and expenditures have been updated in the first post. please check expenditures. since the quest rewards are all more or less up to yourselves, simply deduct them from your rewards or buy them for the appropriate amount (scrolls etc)

In the case of Vallgar - you need to include which skeletons I gained - the cost for animation and everything will be handled after the quest, so there's nothing else that needs to be noted for that.

Also - make sure you note the CL of all expendables used.

As the three exit the cave into the bright light of dawn, Snaga claps Uranedal on the back.

"Victory! Victory, my dear friends! I must say we are a force to be reckoned with are we not? Ha! The rising sun never looked as good as it does to me now. Wealth and fame are the rewards of a battle well fought.

I can hear the bards now:
So cunning were the Tri-Wizards that they suffered not a scratch!
'Gainst Turon's blade and bowman's eye no others were a
Match!
With mystic might and powers grand, against their foes the six did stand...

Well, I'm not much of a poet but you get the idea. Come on, I'll bet the first round of elven wine we can reach Gladius by nightfall!"

This was great, I really enjoyed it. Good storytelling by Whitebaron and great RP all around I hope this isn't the last we hear of the Triwizards.

Thank you! And extra thanks to Whitebaron for running it.

Uranedal smiles to Snaga, quite proud of their achievement.

You have some talent Snaga.. if you have some spare time you could even write a poem about our adventure!

I'm quite surprised we did so well.. I expected much more difficult fights, but, after all, who can stop 3 wizards working together?

Uranedal stops for a moment, as someone trying to stop his embarass, then he resumes

And a migthy undead warrior! Turon, you've been great! Now let's go back to Gladius and make sure no-one gives us too much troubles

I would like to thank Whitebaron as well for this nice quest. I hope to have you as a questlord in future as well.

And thanks both to The Dread Dormammu and TelinArtho for taking part in this nice quest. Let's hope the Triwizards can make another quest soon (just level up fast! :))

glad you liked it. with the declining rp from me (funeral and later a bit of a flu) and telin(flu, too - coincidence?) you'd have to make up for it a bit, and we took a week longer, but glad we finished it that skillfully on time. :)

about the difficulty: well, it was a bit to low. you're about CR 7.3, so we would have needed to make one EL 8 fight. Since i don't know how this works out with coco rules and wanted to end this quest, i just decided to skip asking you for a harder last fight - could have made it with EL 8, but who knows what else can happen.

another note: i updated the first post and the post in the questlog, to account the caster levels of your scrolls, and vallgars skeletons.

As the wizards journey back to Gladius, they make sure to avoid that stupid tavern, and arrive early in the evening. Noone really seems to mind about their appearance back in town, it seems adventurers are far to common these days. Back in the bar though, they'll have to tell quite some stories. I hope you don't forget to thank your barkeep for your rations ;)
