An invisible attacker gets no advantages related to hitting you in melee. That is, you don’t lose your Dexterity bonus to Armor Class, and the attacker doesn’t get the usual +2 bonus for being invisible. The invisible attacker’s bonuses do still apply for ranged attacks, however. You take only half the usual penalty to speed for being unable to see. Darkness and poor visibility in general reduces your speed to three-quarters normal, instead of one-half. | TelinArtho02-01-06, 04:49 PM | So what is it that you are looking for then? The man sitting across from Sdentch in the tavern was doing his best to keep a business-like face - but the sight of the orcess was difficult to control. Still, he did well, considering. Something to help you take down a temple of Denthian priests? That is going to be tough indeed. I think I might have heard of something that would do quite well... Mind you - it may be more dangerous than the temple itself - if it in fact exists. Give me a minute to go get you the research I have. He leaves Sdentch alone and leaves the tavern. Enter companions and let's get going - he'll be back in 10 minutes. |
| Myrridin02-01-06, 07:48 PM | Morgan walks in and brushes some sand off of his clothing. His face bears the scars of recent battles across it, and a longbow glimmers across his back. "Ale, if you please." he picks it up and slides some silver across the bar. Morgan heads over to Sdentch's table, and pulls up a chair, "Rumor has it you're looking for someone to accompany you on a small quest. I'm interested in anything that might give me the resources to go after the wyrm I just faced. I'm handy in a fight, an come with some arcane power as well." |
| Snommelp02-01-06, 08:03 PM | Grik walks over to the table with two huge tankards. He slides one over to Sdentch. "Hello, new person. You here help Sdentch too? Me not know what we doing, but it sound fun!" Grik takes a deep swig of his ale and almost gags. |
| TheMagister02-01-06, 10:51 PM | Myrridin especially, check the quest and miniquest links on Sdentch's character sheet to get up to date on the story so far. "Hey, Morgan! Pleeztameecha! You say Morgan come with 'harkain power', huh? That mean you a magics-man? With a bow? That good. Luk Bo can use help, and Sdentch can keep bad guys 'way from Morgan." Sdentch's face clouds at a memory. "Yeah, Sdentch protect magics-mans very good. That why Sdentch gots to help stop magics-man afore Sdentch protect the world to death. That Densth, he not really mean...he not really anything but hungry. Hungry, hungry and never get full. Gots to stop Densth afore he eats world. Old man say Sdentch right on the money; that Sdentch should help. He gave Sdentch picture-money, see?" Sdentch holds up a platinum piece strung on a fine chain around her neck. The coin is stamped with a fine representation of the holy symbol of Farlanghan, and its age is as apparant as its worth. "That old man, he a good walker. Walked Sdentch seven-days of walk in just a few hours, talking 'bout Densth with Sdentch. Made Sdentch really wanna help. Sdentch strong (Grik strong too), but Sdentch not dumb. Sdentch know Sdentch need magics-type help to kill magics-type bad guys. That why it good for Morgan be here. Pretty Morgan help with magics against magics. Sdentch glad you here, Morgan!" Sdentch knocks back the dregs in her flagon on Borgo's (shuddering a little as it goes down) and slams the empty mug back on the table as she shoots to her feet. "Where that other oldy-man? He need be here for to give Sdentch inf...uh...ifnur...uh...for tell Sdentch where to go and what to get!" It's good to be started! I'm excited! |
| TelinArtho02-01-06, 11:57 PM | Irony of ironies - all 3 of you chose green for speaking text? Oh well - it shouldn't be too much of an issue - just make sure you only speak in your own character's voice. Anyway - I've got a few other things to do before we get going (like making sure the rewards will fit once they are split up) - so go ahead and talk a little more if you want. |
| TelinArtho02-02-06, 02:16 PM | Returning to the inn, the archivist is surprised to see Sdentch with a couple of newcomers. He gets Sdentch's attention before coming to the table - which he does once she beckons him over. Hello everyone... well Sdentch - here's the information I promised you. I have heard rumors leading to an ancient burial site - located on the Daanarth Peninsula. There is rumored to be treasures uncounted - and among them the Summoner's Bane - which is the legendary sword of one Tali Faersome - who, rumor has it, personally overthrew Denth's armies in the ages before record. As I have said, it is mostly rumor that I have found this - but I believe its existence is assured. Go there and you should be able to find further clues. He seems to hesitate slightly before continuing on. The last documents I have tell of Tali being put to stone. I'm not sure how much you should take this into account - for the records are many hundreds of years old and were recorded from oral stories... but for what good it will do you - that's all I know. Be careful. @TheMagister - Pitlords has clarified that mercs can't be used for quests in the Ask an Elder thread (I believe). Unless you can get me a ruling that changes this - you all won't have the benefit of Hauber for the quest. Sorry. |
| Myrridin02-02-06, 04:42 PM | I'm switching my color for talking, so as to cause less confusion. "Thank you for the warning, we will take it to heart, certainly. Do you know what kind of beings infest these ruins?" Morgan will ask, while he scribbles some notes down on a piece of paper. "Well companions, shall we get moving?" |
| TheMagister02-02-06, 05:09 PM | "Dayarnash? Sdentch never been there." She picks up the map that the keeper of knowledge has laid on the table and looks at it intently...upside down. "Sdentch can't see Dayarnash on here. Which way north?" The archivist grins and marks a small arrow on the map with an "n" at its head. "Oh. That better. Now, where Dayarnash?" Again, the archivist takes the map and places it flat on the table. With a steady hand, he traces out a path on the parchment, complete with little arrows that denote the direction the party will be travelling. It's now sufficiently marked so that a six year old could follow it from one place to the other. Looking at Sdentch's face speculatively, he also makes a few notations beside the line, detailing easy-to-recognize landmarks and villages. Nodding his head in satisfaction, he hands the map back to Sdentch after dusting it with sand from a beltpouch to dry up the wet ink. "Yeah! Now THAT a good map. Thanks oldybook-guy! Sdentch come back with Densth-killin' sword! You wait and see! You guys ready?" @Telin - Aw, man! That sucks. I don't see why Hauber would be averse to making 1200gp for 3 weeks guaranteed work (if we don't die, that is). But, I'll take your word on it. You'd know. Well, our chances just went down quite a bit. Hopefully we can work together and succeed! |
| TelinArtho02-02-06, 05:18 PM | Given the lack of the healer, I figured I'd take a look at your healing resources: Morgan: CLW (x8), CMW (x2), CSW (x2) - decent Sdentch: CLW (x16) - maybe a little light - depends on if you need to heal during a fight Grik: none... Since you haven't left Gladius yet - you can purchase more if you like. Otherwise - I'll be continuing on when I get the chance - probably some time tonight... Good luck to all three of you. |
| TheMagister02-02-06, 05:30 PM | Sdentch will purchase 2 potions of CMW (600 gp) and 6 more Potions of CLW. This brings her to 22 CLW and 2 CMW. And pretty much wipes out her cash reserves. I kind've count on my good HPs to see me through to the end of a fight. If I'm dying faster than the bad guy, chances are there's magic involved and there's nothing Sdentch can do about it anyways. |
| Myrridin02-02-06, 06:22 PM | I actually only have 1 potion of CLW, and 1 potion of CMW left after the Grounding the Dragon quest. I have 538gp left for my character, so I'll buy 8 potions of CLW (400gp), bringing me to 9 potions of CLW, 1 CMW, and 2 CSW...and with 138gp left to my name. As a side note, we need to succeed on this quest, or I'll have to actually fight in the arena to make some money, so I can go back to questing with Morgan. |
| Snommelp02-03-06, 03:56 AM | Grik will get three CMW potions (900 gp) and six CLW potions (300 gp). My hope is that his high HP and AC along with DR will lessen his need, but it's good to be prepared, I suppose. |
| Myrridin02-03-06, 10:04 AM | Now that we're all ready to be beat on, let's get this show on the road! :) |
| TheMagister02-03-06, 10:36 AM | I think I remember Telin saying something about RL busy-ness. I'm excited, too! |
| TelinArtho02-03-06, 11:19 AM | The journey to the Daanarth Peninsula is long and arduous. For the first few days, the trio are able to keep to the road leading to the Province of Promethia - but on the fourth day of travel it becomes clear that their path is off of the main road. Although the forest is light for the most part - the going is slow - and all three are suddenly aware of the wilderness around them. After about an hour off of the road, a band of four cutthroats come to ambush them - but a menacing look from Grik... and Sdentch's wonderful body oder... teaches them the error of their ways and they run off - using the forest to cover their escape. Morgan can't help but laugh. Some time later, the forest breaks and the trio find themselves at the edge of a cliff - some 15ft above the land continuing below. The openness of the cliff allows an easy view of the land ahead - including the peninsula well in sight now. Sdentch and Grik suddenly perk (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=354565) up - there's movement behind you! Two distinct movements, something relatively large and about 100ft behind. No LOS yet. Sdentch and Grik get surprise actions, Morgan - oblivious... |
| TheMagister02-03-06, 11:33 AM | "HEY! Something big and crashy behind us over there! Sdentch protect you, magic-arrows-man!" Sdentch will take a free action to quickdraw her longspear and a standard action to ready it to receive a charge. Morgan should position himself behind the reach of Sdentch's longspear (behind Sdentch is better if it can be managed with a 5' step). TM |
| Snommelp02-03-06, 12:31 PM | "You stay back if you know what good for you, hidey thingy!" Grik mirrors Sdentch, quickdrawing his own longspear and setting it to take a charge (5-foot stepping if he can put himself between Morgan and the monster, again like Sdentch). |
| TelinArtho02-05-06, 09:47 PM | Sdentch and Grik set up defensively in front of the magic user archer with them and watch as two huge lizards come out into their line of sight. The scales are all the shades of blue and they sport a dozen legs to move them along. They move in to about 50ft from the front duo and 60ft from Morgan. The trees seem to be slowing them a little, but their huge bodies have a greater goal... food. Initiative (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=356503): Morgan, Grik, Sdentch, Behirs Sorry guys - busy weekend for me. Good luck again. |
| TheMagister02-05-06, 11:46 PM | Sdentch looks at the muscled mass of the serpents before her and at the heavy spear made toy-like in comparison. "Nuh-uh-no-way. Sdentch not stupid-head to stay and be snakey-bites for blue-lizard. Sdentch smart-fighter." Raising her voice, she shouts battle commands at the party in her custody: "Grik, climb a tree!" as she takes a hand off of her longspear {free} and reaches into her beltpouch and pulls out a Potion of Fly {move} and drinks it down {stan}. She then places her hand back on her longspear {free}, ready once more. Ok, guys. Melee is a no-no with these guys, because (vs. our ACs) a grapple is pretty much a sure thing, and since our archer doesn't have improved precise shot, the guy who gets grappled is pretty much on his own Vs. a +25 grapple check. So, our best chance for survival is to suck up the lightning breath (that only happens every 10 rounds) and deal damage from range. Sdentch will fly, and I recommend Morgan does, too. Grik has no way to make himself unhittable without using the terrain, so if I were him I'd just run away and draw Luk Bo when it's safe and deal damage from FAR away. NO-ONE short of a giant can outgrapple these things. Our best damage dealing will come from Morgan with his rapid shot capability, AND he has a 50/50 shot of hitting every round (a little better with PBS, actually). We can take this one easy if we do it right. TM Editted for roleplaying goodness. |
| Snommelp02-05-06, 11:58 PM | Two?! Aw, jeeze... "Tree?" Grik doesn't understand why, but he obeys, dropping his spear and running to the nearest tree (away from the monsters). He then jumps up into its branches and begins to climb. Assuming he can accomplish the run and jump with enough movement left to climb fairly high, Grik will also draw Luk Bo. |
| TheMagister02-06-06, 01:10 AM | Two?! Aw, jeeze... That's what I said. This should be easy if we can kill 'em before they climb the tree after you (they climb @ 15'). If they do, jump down. The falling damage is less than the grapple damage. |
| Myrridin02-06-06, 10:35 AM | Morgan sees the worms, and hears Sdentch yell to fly, so he casts a spell, overcoming (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=357134) the resistance of his armor. He flies upwards and back 50 feet while drawing his bow. "Get out of the way, if you can." Precise Shot will be my level 9 feat. I know that doesn't help us now, and I should've taken it as my EK feat, I just wasn't thinking clearly. |
| Myrridin02-07-06, 02:41 PM | Just checking to make sure this is still a go. |
| TelinArtho02-07-06, 03:03 PM | Morgan casts his spell and starts to fly (out of reach of any attack from the behirs). Grik moves to a tree (back 5ft), drops his spear and starts to climb. Climbing is at 1/4 speed (10ft) on a successful check (DC15 with 1d20+4-1). You can accelerate the speed to 1/2 speed (20ft), but then the roll is 1d20+4-1-5. Sdentch drinks down a potion. Need clarification on the climb before I proceed. |
| TheMagister02-07-06, 04:58 PM | They move in to about 50ft from the front duo and 60ft from Morgan. The trees seem to be slowing them a little, but their huge bodies have a greater goal... food. Initiative (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=356503): Morgan, Grik, Sdentch, Behirs This means they're hampered by the undergrowth, right? I was kinda banking on that. Hampered means no charges and 1/2 speed for them. TM |
| Snommelp02-07-06, 10:41 PM | Quarter Speed. The total -2 modifier for half speed does not appeal to me. Let's just hope they don't get too close... |
| TelinArtho02-08-06, 11:08 AM | Morgan casts his spell and starts to fly (out of reach of any attack from the behirs). Grik moves to a tree (back 5ft), drops his spear and starts to climb (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359176). He successfully makes it up about 20ft to a branch. Sdentch drinks down a potion. The two huge lizards move slowly throw the thick underbrush, reaching the edge of Sdentch's spear-head. Double moved to be 10ft from Sdentch. Grik is 5ft beyond that and 20ft up. Morgan is out of reach of their attacks |
| Myrridin02-08-06, 11:14 AM | "Away from him, you multi-legged freaks!" Morgan shouts as he lets loose with two arrows from his bow at the behir nearest to Grik. Attacks: 11+10=21; 13+10=23 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359179) Damage: 7+3+6(fire)=16; 6+3+3(fire)=12 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359180) If they're already in combat, then reduce each of those shots by 4, and I guess I'll miss the behir both times. If Morgan misses twice, then next round I'll be moving so that I'm 30' away from them, for the PBS bonus. |
| TheMagister02-08-06, 03:04 PM | They're 10 ft away from a medium-sized Sdentch, so they don't count as "in melee". You hit 'em. Sdentch waves jauntily at the great serpents and then withdraws {full round action} off the edge of the cliff and into the open air, ending at least 40 ft. away from the edge of the cliff. She will gain altitude with whatever movement she has left after completing her lateral move. "Bye leezards! Sdentch be back soon, with ARROWS! (Hehe...Sdentch so clever...)", she chuckles as she goes. TM |
| TelinArtho02-08-06, 04:10 PM | Well, the only thing left I need to know is whether Grik will continue climbing or if he's happy at a height of 20ft... (bearing in mind these are huge creatures with a 10ft reach...) "Poor Grik - we knew him well..." |
| TheMagister02-08-06, 04:31 PM | I believe it's "Alas, poor Grik, I knew him well, Horatio..." =) Grik needs to get as high as he can in the tree for two reasons. One, orcs never do anything only half-way (always the biggest axe, sharpest sword, dirtiest armpits, etc.) and two, he needs to be somewhere Sdentch can swoop in and pick him up. "Hey Grik! See Sdentch flyin'! Climb up-up high and Sdentch come and pick you up, you handsome boy!" TM |
| TelinArtho02-08-06, 04:45 PM | A fine plan... just make sure you calculate that weight down to the tenth of a pound... |
| TheMagister02-08-06, 05:03 PM | A fine plan... just make sure you calculate that weight down to the tenth of a pound... Sdentch calculate?! Puhleeeze. Strategize, yes. Calculate, no. =) They're in good hands as far as Sdentch's hands can go. |
| Snommelp02-08-06, 05:08 PM | Grik will keep climbing. And if you'll let him do it with no penalty to Climb, he'll also be drawing Luk Bo. |
| TelinArtho02-08-06, 05:21 PM | Well, since you need both hands to climb - drawing your bow is a big no-no (unless of course - you want to fall... - which might happen anyway...) Morgan nocks an arrow, fires, nocks another and fires - each arrow igniting as it leaves his bow. The arrows fly true - stiking one of the lizards and forcing it to screech in pain. Grik tries to climb some more, but his grip is not good enough on one of the branches and he falls, hurting (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359360) his shoulder some. I will add a jump/tumble check to lessen this once I check his skills He doesn't get a jump check since he didn't intentionally jump - sorry Grik... Sdentch withdraws from the hungry lizards - leaving Grik alone to face the two alone... The immense creatures move closer to Grik and they lash out with bolts of electricity (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359363). Grik seems to dodge the worst of it - but the real danger is still clear and present - 5ft from him. Current Status: Sdentch 75/75, Fly (ends 51) Morgan 52/52, Fly (ends 61) Grik 51/79 Behir 1 xxx-28/xxx Behir 2 xxx/xxx |
| TheMagister02-08-06, 07:06 PM | Well, I didn’t want to do this, but since Grik is in trouble… Sdentch will reach into her beltpouch again and draw out a Potion of Enlarge Person {move} which she will then consume {stan}, growing to large size. Her new statistics are: Str 22 (+6) or 26 (+8) raged Dex 15 (+2) AC: 17 (+2 Dex, +6 armor, -1 size), touch 11 BAB/Grapple: +8/+18 (+8 bab, +6 str, +4 size) or +8/+20 raged Saves: Fort: +12 Ref: +5 Will: +3 (+5 raged) [Ma] Longspear +14/+9 melee (reach 20’), 2d6+9 damage [+8 bab, +6 str, +1 [Ma], -1 size] Modifiers: Rage +2 to hit, +3 damage, +1 to hit higher ground (when applicable) [b]Carrying Capacity: 0-346 (light), 347-692 (medium), 693-1040 (heavy) |
| Snommelp02-08-06, 07:19 PM | Before you commit to an action, you should see what Morgan and Grik will be doing. However, since I fully expect Morgan to keep shooting... Grik realizes the situation he's in and decides that he may as well work it to his advantage, acting as a decoy. "Hey, snakey thingies! Lookie at me!" And with that, Grik retreats as best he can, dodging through the trees (and ending with at least one tree between him and the creatures. Withdraw action to avoid AoOs in case they happen to be in range; with equal speed, I can hopefully outrun them for a decent amount of time. |
| TheMagister02-08-06, 07:30 PM | You're right. However, Sdentch isn't gonna fight, and you're doing just what I thought you were gonna do. Since you're medium and they're HUGE, you'll have a much easier time running away from them than they will have catching you. "Grik! When Sdentch come closer, grab Sdentch's spear! You goin' for ride, big boy!" TM |
| Myrridin02-09-06, 09:21 AM | "Keep him safe, I'll see what I can do to discourage the beasts." Morgan yells as he sees Grik take off running. He aims at the monster he previously injured, and fires twice more at it. Attacks: 9+10=19, 2+10=12 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359699) Morgan hisses in disappointment as his arrows fly wide of the mark, scoring the earth next to the injured one. "Damn! My apologies Grik, I'll aim better next time!" |
| TheMagister02-11-06, 11:30 AM | Telin, I'm just checking in. How's your wife's leg? Sorry to hear about that, BTW. Have fun doing dishes, vacuuming, taking care of midnight kiddo problems, etc. =) Wives are amazing, and it's amazing how much they do, even if it's not immediately apparent until they suddenly CAN'T!
