Sir Alboreth
The Crying God called me, and I answered. To help the poor, the suffering, and the weak is my mission.

Help all who hurt, no matter who they are. The truly holy take on the suffering of others. If you suffer in his name, Ilmater is there to support you. Stick to your cause if it is right, whatever the pain or peril. There is no shame in a meaningful death. Stand up to all tyrants, and allow no injustice to go unchallenged. Emphasize the spiritual nature of life over the existance of the material body.

Alboreth was born into a large Maenad village along the coasts. As with all young Maenads, he swam quite a bit and was taken with the sea, spending some time learning his father’s trade as a sailor. Like most of his people, he trained also his psionic abilities by enrolling in the town militia. Though he was more militant in his studies, focusing on swordplay more than on psionics, he quickly earned the respect of the others for his skills. He went on several missions beyond the village when aid was requested from a nearby town at war with some Orc hoards, and there met a young priest of Ilmater. The two became fast friends, and the priest would often speak to Alboreth of the beliefs of Ilmater. The young Maenad found that these principles tugged at his heart – helping the poor and suffering, placing others’ lives above ones own, dedicating oneself to a greater good – and eventually asked his friend how he may serve this God, since his talent was in martial prowess and not clerical preachings and healing magics. His friend, initially quite surprised (for as with most Maenads, Alboreth is quiet and often keeps his emotions carefully guarded), informed him of the Knights of the Weeping Palm, a small order of Paladins devoted to Ilmater and stationed in the mighty city of Gladius. Alboreth left for the city as soon as he was able, and was initiated into the order. He fights in the gladiatorial arena to develop his prowess before he leaves the city again to help the needy wherever he may go.

Recently, Sir Alboreth has joined with the Celestial Forces, recognizing when they constructed a nunnery to aid the citizens of Arkhein that they may be the only guild in the city that isn't so wrapped up in thier own self-interest to lend aid the poor and suffering. Though he went against the advice of his fellow Knights - who remain unconvinced that any of the guilds will care for the suffering of Gladius and wish to remain seperate from them all - he has become firmly convinced that his decision was the correct one, seeing the compassion held by the members of the Celestial Forces for the suffering and the concern of its leadership that they lend aid to the citizens of Gladius, in addition to the omens Ilmater has shown him. He has actually begun to question whether he should perhaps remain with the CEF rather than leave Gladius to journey and aid the suffering wherever he goes once he is capable enough, for it seems to him that the work he does with the CEF brings great relief to the citizens of Gladius, and he has come to think that perhaps the CEF will one day be able to eliminate poverty and suffering from the city entirely - and if this is the case, he wishes to be there to help bring this about.

Alboreth wears his blue-and-gray Full Plate armor whenever expecting battle or for some formal ocassions, but removes it in any casual circumstances (for even with his strength, such a heavy load is uncomfortable). Beneath it he wears a practical set of leather clothes, largely blue and brown in color, and he wears a cloak whenever he is not wearing his armor. He is quite tall, even for a Maenad (few Maenads in history have passed 7’ in height), and can be somewhat imposing on a first glance, though his soft demeanor usually alleviates any such fears in those he wishes no harm to. His skin is slightly blue-tinged (unusual for a Maenad but not completely unheard of - it tends to signify Water Elemental anscestry) and sparkles with greater luster than most of his people, as it is inlaid with more bits living crystals than most Maenads’, which adds to the image of a warrior of light that accompanies the title of Paladin. He never reveals his last name to anyone, for a peculiar tradition of his village was to keep one’s surname a secret from all save one's blood relatives. Unlike most of his people, who wear their hair in long braids, his ebony hair is cut short in a simple, practical style, save for one long braid reaching over his shoulder and down to his waist.

Ulfgar grew up in the woods not far to the east of Gladius. He was abandoned at birth, and found by an old human hermit. This hermit took him in and taught him the way of nature. Ulfgar listened intently, and tryed to learn as much as possible.

One day, before Ulfgar came to age as a adult, the hermit died. the hermit left everything he had to Ulfgar. Everything he had being the old near-collapsed cave, and a pile of leaves that was his bed. Or that's what Ulfgar thought. With his dying words, the hermit told Ulfgar of his most prized possesion. In a well hidden compartment on the foor of the cave, was a rotted out wood chest. As Ulfgar tried to lift the box out, the whole thing collapsed into a pile at the bottom of the hole.

Ufgar began digging out the rotted wood, when he began to see smething glimmering through the pile. As he cleared more wood, he realised that it was a tome. He reached in to pick up the tome, but as he touched it, he was pushed backward, by some force, emanating from the book. He hit the ground a couple feet away from the hole, where he lay unconsious.

In his sleeping state, a being came to him. This being, first looked like some kind of animal, but after a couple seconds it began to change its form into a different animal. this being then began to speak to him. It said, "Ulfgar, by coming into contact with this tome, you have been chosen to reieve the power off nature. This power, although small as of now, will eventually grow as you do. This though is not enough to watch over the forests. When I sense that you have grown enough, I will return to you and show you the location of the next tome. Good luck, I will be watching you." With that the form dissappeared, and Ulfgar returned to the consious world. The tome had disappeared.

Now with thi new found ability and no master to live with, Ulfgar thought it be a good time to head to the great city he had heard so much about, Gladius.

I have visited the town of Gladius, and have to say, I don't really like it too much. Everything there is too crowded, and too tense. Out here, in the forest though, it is competely different. It is so relaxing. There are others out here, that prefer it this way too. They are the TLT guild. I have decided to join this guild.
As I was being accepted, we spotted a spy. For my initiation test, I was assigned to chase down the spy and find out what he wanted. As I got near to him, I heard him tell two orcs to protect his rear, while he rode off to someone named Galladi. I quickly took care of the orcs, but the man's speed on the horse was too much for me. I must find out who this Galladi is.

I had been allowed to join with the prestigious TLT guild. So I felt it my right to help support, and protect it.
I fought my first battle in the Collisium, and lost. My opponent used a very sneaky tactic. he must have been some type of roguish-mage, for he was hitting me with a lot of magic, while staying invisible. I'll have to go buy a couple of items for the next fight, maybe thenn will I stand a chance.
I have been looking for more info on this Galladi person. I hear the CEF guild has also been having a few run-ins with him. I have talked to one of their members and am planning on investigating a little. We'll see where this goes.

Well, I was to late to fight in the arena this week. This isn't good. I need to help get money for my guild. Well as soon as i get back from investigating this galladi guy, I'll get right on that.
Speaking of quest, I have een in contact with sir Alboreth, and he is more than ready to join me. He is just as interested as me to get this taken care of. I guess the CEF guild has been having a bunch of problems. Well, his problems with Galladi are much more severe than mine. We plan on going after some kidnapper. I'll be back as soon as we find more out.

[Introduction]

Before Sir Alboreth sets out, Enzoul pulls him aside and hands him a short note. Remember that as much as information about this Galladi is needed - there is no need to unnecessarily risk your life - or that of Ulfgar. Take care. Here's the level of organization that we've gleaned thus far.

The note reveals the orcs that Sir Alboreth killed, their direct leader (Hugart - a human) - then some indirect lines to Galladi. It is clear to Enzoul that Hugart appears to be merely a pawn and the orcs even less than that. Hugart has a note about a seafaring community by the name of "Sealock" - located to the west of Gladius - across the water.

Meeting up with Ulfgar at the docks, Sir Alboreth finds their commisioned trade ship to take them westward. The captain of the ship, Captain Fairton, comes down to the dock to greet them.

The sooner we get moving the better. I do not like our destination - for it is ripe with pirates - so if it is all the same for you - getting there and back would be greatly advisable. Have you need of anything else before our voyage?

Just so I know - are either of you taking along your animal companion/mount?

That be our mode of travel? You never told me we were taking a boat. You do know that dwarves don't float very well?

Ufgar continues to moan and groan all the way up to the ship.

No, Ulfgar hardly wants to get on the boat, there is no way he will force Ilde on the boat with him.

Alboreth gives Ulfgar a nod at the complaint, followed by an amused smile. "I was aware - I've known a few Dwarves to say such when they visited my home village in the past - but I'd thought you may be a bit more comfortable with them, given your affinity for nature. After all, the sea is as natural a place as any forest. But in any event we've little choice. Aside from tracking down a wizard to teleport us there - and I'm sure that even if we could find one we couldn't afford his fees - I can think of no other way to reach this "Sealock" place." His amused smile remains as the Dwarf continues to grumble.

In answer to the captain, Alboreth says, "Understandable - we'll be as swift as we can, then. And no, I am prepared. If my companion has no need of anything, we can set out at once."

Don't have a mount to bring, so no problems there.

It's not the sea itself that I'm worried about, it's more the fact that bouyancy doesn't come to easy to my kind. Maybe some day I would explore it if I could go down there safely, but as of now, the water is as dangerous to me as lava.

I'm ready to go whenever you are. At least as ready as possible for this situation.

Ulfgar takes his sweat time climbing the plank onto the ship. Please don't break, please don't break.

You needn't worry here master Dwarf. This ship is as sturdy as the great oaks of the Gladius Park. If this ship be sinking - I'd be a poor captain indeed!

The captain seems happy to get underway - such is his life - he enjoys the ocean and all its aspects.

The voyage is relatively short - as far as either the paladin or the druid are concerned - though the dwarf is greatly looking forward to land. Only one ship comes close enough for hailing - and although there was some concern of pirates, the captain quells any fears by revealing the boat's telltale marks on the bow that identify it as a merchant ship.

Ulfgar, about an hour away from shore, notes the shoreline and the awaiting piers. However, he also notes something in the sky. Just about the same moment, the sailor in the crow's nest signals about the oncoming intruder.

Whatever it is - its flying very quickly.

500ft distant after its surprise action - roughly humanoid with wings. It seems to be taking advantage of gravity to speed its flight.

[Initiative (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=353732)]

Sir Alboreth 20 (no surprise action)
Ulfgar 4 (surprise action first)
Flying Opponent 19 (surprise action)

Ulfgar - 1 action, then Sir Alboreth.

"Strange - what manner of being would be coming to intercept us like this? Best to be prepared for the worst." Unslinging his bow, Alboreth moves towards the edge of the ship in the direction of the intruder, calling upon his innate abilities to bring forth a shimmering barrier of light before him before sighting the oncoming creature, prepared to shoot if it appeared hostile. "Can you tell what this creature may be, my Dwarven friend?"

Which means once I get my action I move to within 5 or 10 feet of the railing, drawing my bow, and manifest Force Screen, then in the next round ready to fire once the thing comes within 100'. Alboreth can't afford range penalties with his bow attack at a measely +3. Also see if Ulfgar can ID the thing with his Knowledge (Nature), or if it dawns on Alboreth what it is once he has a clearer view (Knowledge (Psionics) or (Religion)).

Edited due to reconsidering not putting up Force Screen.

Surprise Round: Opponent flies 80ft closer, drawing a bow; Ulfgar casts Magic Stone (surprise is only one action - so drawing, loading and firing will happen in subsequent rounds)

The opponent flies at incredible speed, maintaining an altitude of probably 100ft. Ulfgar doesn't like the looks of things as he starts to make out that the individual has wings much like that of a bat - leathery and wide.

Round 1: Sir Alboreth draws his bow while moving and manifests Force Screen (20 rounds, +4 shield AC). The opponent closes 160ft (by descending 40ft and flying at double speed) and fires at Ulfgar. Ulfgar draws his sling and loads it.

Sir Alboreth moves closer to the front of the ship, drawing his bow. He then seems to concentrate internally for a moment. The opponent, meanwhile, dives downward and closer at the speed of a dragon, bringing an arrow to his bow and letting it loose on Ulfgar, but the arrow doesn't fly true and plunges into the water (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=354625). Ulfgar draws his sling and loads a magic stone into it.

Round 2: The opponent is 60ft up and ~260ft away total. Sir Alboreth's action.

Ouch. I think I have a decent idea of what this may be, and it doesn't bode well if I'm right. Range is more Ulfgar's forte with his magic than Alboreth's, so I guess I'll have to let him see what he can do about this. I take it neither of us knows for certain what this thing is?

Holding his bow at the ready, Alboreth backs up, trying to interpose himself between Ulfgar and thier foe.

Alboreth will try to manuever so any further shot at Ulfgar has to deal with some soft cover from him, and will ready to fire if the opponent comes within 100'.

Neither of you have any knowledge of what this might be - sorry

SIr Alboreth moves in front of Ulfgar, and puts his arrow to the ready. The opponent closes some more, stopping at a distance of 120ft (still 40ft up), firing another arrow at Ulfgar (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=356517) - despite Sir Alboreth in the way. The arrow lodges deeply in the dwarf, causing him great pain.

Ulfgar then Sir Alboreth again.

Sorry about this guys - I had a very busy weekend. We'll get this caught up though without too much trouble.

That's all right, I wasn't even around anyway.

Alboreth looks back at Ulfgar in concern, considering going for his wand to heal the grisly wound. "Are you alright, my friend?" At the Dwarf's nod, he decides to focus on the foe instead, echoing Ulfgar's sentiments and keeping his bow at the ready.

In other words, continue readying to fire once hes within 100'. I imagine this will go a lot quicker once the fella closes.

Ulfgar hurls (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=358385) a stone at the opponent, but it falls short of him.

The opponent starts to dive towards the ship and towards Sir Alboreth, but as it does, Sir Alboreth lets loose an arrow, but it also misses (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=358393) the target. The diving creature claws at Sir Alboreth viciously before landing, but the vile claws dance (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=358402) along his armor harmlessly.

Ulfgar then Sir Alboreth. The opponent is in melee with Sir Alboreth and is 15ft from Ulfgar (with Sir Alboreth in between).

Shouting a challenge at his opponent, the creature's foul nature clear up close, Alboreth drops his bow and retrieves his Greatsword from his back, bringing it across his foe in the same motion. He calls forth the power of his race once more, putting all the psychic energy he can muster into the stroke, intending to cleave the abomination before him in twain with a single stroke.

Drop bow, draw greatsword, single attack w/ Psionic Weapon (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=358433). Hits AC 25 for 18 damage.

How much room behind the opponent to the edge of the ship.

Draw wand of CLW. If there is room behind the opponent, spontaneous cast SNA1 for a wolf(dropping magic fang). If not then just heal (priority Sir alboreth.)
TelinArtho

There's enough room for a wolf behind the opponent

Ulfgar starts casting a spell to bring forth a wolf from the realms of nature. Sir Alboreth draws his greatsword and swings it with great speed and accuracy into the figure before him, cutting him deeply. Some of the wound immediately closes up - but the attack has clearly hurt his opponent severely.

The winged-opponent then reaches out towards Sir Alboreth, clawing and biting, but the attacks are deflected (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359275) by his force screen and armor.

Ulfgar's wolf appears behind the opponent - flanking him. It immediately attacks, but cannot penetrate (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359277) the strange being's hide. Forgot to add flanking bonus to attack roll, but it missed anyway.

Ulfgar is up, then Sir Alboreth

At this point, Alboreth will keep swinging away. His lowest possible damage is 6, enough to damage this thing even with its DR, so no worries. A few rounds should drop it I think. If it tries to flee or I take at least 1/2 my hp in damage I may want to switch, but otherwise just attack.

To get things going, I'll roll the next round's attack.

Alboreth, grateful for the aid of the conjured Wolf in distracting his foe, brings his mighty blade about a second time, but the blow is less precise, for he is distracted by the sudden and unexpected fury of his opponent.

Misses AC 13 (forgot flanking), would've been for 14 damage. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359279)

In the interest of speeding this along, I'm going to roll Alboreth's next few attacks.

1: Hits AC16 (AC18 w/flank) for 9. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359574)
2: Hits AC14 (16 w/flank) for 16. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359575)
3: Hits AC17 (19 w/flank) for 11. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359576)
4: Hits AC15 (17 w/flank) for 13. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359577)

Those attack rolls don't seem to like me since that first attack (not one rolled above a 9)... hopefully at least one of those hits.

Ulfgar draws his wand and steps behind Sir Alboreth in case he should need to be healed. Sir Alboreth swings his sword, but the attack misses.

The raging creature continues to assault Sir Alboreth, but again its attacks dance along his armor (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359801).

The wolf attacks the creature, but misses (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359803) completely.

Ulfgar hangs back - waiting to heal Sir Alboreth if healing is needed. Sir Alboreth swings his sword, and connects with it, but it seems little to notice the wound.

The raging creature again assaults Sir Alboreth, tearing (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359804) a chunk of his shoulder away with its vicious bite (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359805) and claw. Ulfgar sees his ally wounded and touches the wand (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359807) to his shoulder

The wolf attacks once more, but is still ineffective (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359809).

Sir Alboreth continues the assault, but his attack misses.

The raging creature continues attacking Sir Alboreth, but the attacks can't penetrate his defenses (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359812). Ulfgar touches the wand to Sir Alboreth's shoulder again, closing (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359813) some more of his wounds. The wolf disappears.

Sir Alboreth swings again, and finally drops the strange, evil creature. As he bends down to look at it more closely, it dissolves away into the air - leaving behind its chain shirt and nothing more.

Nice and easy with a crit to make things interesting...

Current Status:

Sir Alboreth 32/39, Force Screen (will end before next encounter)
Ulfgar 18/29 Magic Stone (2 stones left, just under a 1/2 hour - likely to end before next encounter)

Sir Alboreth shakes his head in dismay - the creature was clearly foul, but he hated having to kill anything. "Spawn of the hells..." he says, partly an observation, partly to remind himself of the necessity of its death. Noticing the few wounds that remained on himself he removes his own wand, closing (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359869) his wounds with its restorative magic and murmuring a brief prayer of thanks to Ilmater for the power to use such an object. Noticing the wound remaining in his friend from the arrow, Alboreth helps him in removing the arrow and touches his wand to wound, greatly (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=359873) restoring the flesh, though some bruises remained. After the crew calmed down and realized that no other creatures were coming to attack, Alboreth returned to his room to meditate on the events and pray.

After the healing Alboreth is at 39/39 and Ulfgar at 26/29. No reason Ulfgar should have to use up all his wand's charges when Alboreth can help out with that too :) . Anyway, Alboreth will take a few mintues of the remaining voyage to regain his Psionic Focus (take 20). Also, just noticing as it isn't listed, shouldn't there be an xp reward for the encounter as well? Or are you waiting to list that for some reason? Just curious.
TelinArtho

02-09-06, 02:46 PM
Usually I don't bother listing any of the rewards (xp or gp) until the end of a quest. This is because so many of my quests end in player death... which means I'd have to delete it later... so I'm just saving myself a step usually... (okay - the real reason is I'm lazy...). Since you can't update your character until the end of the quest anyway - it won't matter much.

Thanks for that healing. Sorry that i didn't step up, I think I would have been more of a hinderance in something like that. what was that thing anyway? I don't think I have seen anything like it.

Ulfgar then looks at the chain shirt.

do you want this item, it is completely useless to me.
Zevox

02-09-06, 05:10 PM
Alboreth shrugs. "No need to thank me for the healing - we are companions, after all, and even if we weren't Ilmater teaches that one should aid all who suffer, no matter who they may be. As for the chain shirt, its not of much use to me either since I favor heavier armor, but I'll take it anyway. I can sell it if nothing else, or perhaps one of the other Warriors of Light back at the Celestial Forces can think of a use for it. As for what the thing was, I can only guess, but it seemed an unnatural being reminiscient of tales I've heard from my brother knights of the Demons of the Abyss or the Devils of the Hells. Not of any particular variety I've ever heard of, but similar I fear. It is an ill omen, but we must press on."

"And don't worry about your performance in the battle - conjuring that Wolf was an excellent move, and healing me as the creature struck was a good enough plan. We must each play to our strengths in such situations - mine is in close combat with my blades, and yours is with your magic."
