Hi

As often as I use quirks I need a new funny, exiting and logical exponation to why my character adventure. What are the reason that makes your character risk his life in the dungeons or out on the battlefield?

This is the format I had in mind:

#1 The character belives that he will die within a year. Therefore he has nothing to loose, he has no family, only glory and wealth awaits in the dragons lair.

2. The character has wronged someone in the past or otherwise made an enemy, and the enemy has sworn to come back and kill him in this year. The character, therefore, is trying to get away from him. (This pertains to a character i'm creating. In the case of the character, he's a half-elf and the person he wronged was a racist/human supremacist.)

I'm not sure if anyone else has already done something similar to this in one of their games.

5. Is searching the world for a long lost love, twin brother, father, or mentor

6. Has lost everything he holds dear. Looking to get wealth, power, magic so he can protect those precious to him. Insecurities and paranoia that "they" will come and take it all away again because he's too weak prevent him from settling down and living a normal life with anyone.

10. Author. Wants material for an exciting memoir or roman-à-clef

11. Is a young, evangelical follower of the Silver Flame (or something). Wants to do two years of missionary work, and find unsaved souls to save. (a bit like many Latter Day Saints)

12. Chaotic Good drow ranger who has been exiled from his people for the crime of taking Rapid Shot rather than Two Weapon Fighting, and not owning any scimitars.

13. Overall, depressed about the entire course of his life so far: find his job depressing, friendships strained, etc. Contemplates suicide, but decides to leave it up to fate rather than gauranteeing it: he'll do something stupidly risky, in which both living and dying are very possible, and if he gets out alive, he'll be determined to live life to its fullest, and if he dies, that'll be an end to his torment, in service of a good cause. Effectively, play Russian roullet.

14. Has a creepy, stalker ex-boyfriend, who thinks that she still likes him in spite of restraining orders and the like. Feels her person safety is threatened. Sells her non-portable property, and leaves town, armed, to get away; her ex would find out where she's living if she stays anywhere too long.

15. Sociopath; vandalizes, defrauds, steals, rapes, and kills everywhere he goes. Has to stay on the move before the authorities catch up.

16: Was about to be married to boy/girlfriend, but spouse is taken by bbeg (dragon to make half-dragon children, evil lord wants them for a spouse, evil priest using for sacrafice)... the character then goes after them.

17:A stranger staggers into the characters room at night and tells them of a comming doom before dying. The character takes it apon themselves to try and stop it.

18: Doesnt actually want to adventure, but it sent on a mission by his lord (he is only a guard) because he insulted the lord. The mission is far beyond his skill level and will take years too complete, but if he doesnt take it, death is the other option.

19:Finds a powerfull intelligent magical item that forces him to kill once a day, the character must search for a way to a)keep the guards from gettng him b)right the wrongs the weapon made him do and c) get rid of the damn thing.

20: The character was bored one day and couldnt think of anything better to do... so wandered off into the forest... found a dungeon by accident... and yeah.

Never in my wildest imaginings did I EVER expect to see anything about the Latter Day Saints on this forum. Wonders never cease.

21. Has failed at every mudane occupation he has tried, but was drafted for a war, and found he was good at killing. Hates himself for that, but does the only thing he is good at. (I have just such a character)

28: They have a notorious failure in their background--a fighter who was a former bodyguard and who let his charge be killed, a rogue whose partner in crime was caught and executed, a cleric whose faith was insufficient to ward off an undead, which killed three of her bodyguard, or something like that. This has shaken their confidence in their normal career, and they have put themselves aside from normal society so that they can test themselves.

29: The character has a stigma of some sort that they cannot easily escape. They seek out situations where they can conspicuously do good so that everyone can see their true nature.

30 (for a godless cleric): They're trying to set up a church. Once, they were a normal person who got into trouble of some sort and were about to die. They called on the gods....and one of them answered, a very obscure god who vanished from the history books three thousand years ago. With a commandment to restore the church and divine power, but no idea who this god is or what they stand for, they set out into the world.

31: A relative was a famous hero, and the character seeks to live up to their standard.

32: A relative was a famous villain or coward, and the character seeks to prove that they're different.

16: Was about to be married to boy/girlfriend, but spouse is taken by bbeg (dragon to make half-dragon children, evil lord wants them for a spouse, evil priest using for sacrafice)... the character then goes after them.

Or, a variation on a theme...

33. Was about to be married and spouse-to-be is the BBEG. Character leaves to prevent whatever the BBEG's plan is and has to keep moving in order not to be found.

Not that I've used this one on a long-running basis or anything... ^_^;

34.) Tired of living in the shadow of a preiminent family member.

35.) Trying to make up for a past mistake, or to change the preception of someone they wronged (or perhaps just accidentally offended).

36.) To revel in the bloodshed and slaughter of armed struggle, because it alone can purify the soul and make one worthy.

37.) To further your political ambitions, afterall Bob the Dragonsbane is a lot more intimidating than Bob the peasent.

38.) To find your own death in a valiant struggle (due to depression, perhaps brought on by loss).

39.) To track down an heirloom of your house (perhaps the family Moonblade) or an artifact sacred to your civilization (one of the Bane Blades of Demeron to the elves, etc.).

40.) To bring about glorious war between your civilization and another nearby civilization. This war will bring about many deaths to high ranking nobles who often lead from the front, allowing you to move up the pecking order of nobles as they conveniently die.

41.) Your clan/family/house failed in a bid to sieze power (from any sort of ruler) and now you are fleeing either the ruler's wrath or perhaps your own embarrassment.

43. (for a good character, particularly a paladin) Wants to protect the innocent and oppose anyone who would harm them.

44. Wants to increase own strength by seeking out bigger and badder opponents and killing them...along with anyone else who gets in the way.

45. It's a rite of passage for some cult they've been initiated into.

46. The character is adventuring to prove others wrong (IE, a fighter might adventure because people in his home town thought him weak, or a monk might take to the road because her family thought she was too undisciplined.)

47. The characters entire clan/race/family/etc was wiped out by the BBEG, and the character seeks vengeance for his/her people.

48. The Air Bud clause ( a great roleplaying device for strange characters, like a half-orc bard, or a halfling barbarian. Just because the class doesnt fit the races archetype, doesnt mean they cant be it, right?)

49. The character needs lots of money to make something special (like rebuild his father's castel, create a golem, buy the liberty of a friend,...), and going on adventure is the fastest way to earn BIG treasures.

50. The character decide to avenge the death of an adventurer friend, so he takes the place of his friend in the group.

51. The character want to know everything. Because knowledge is power.

52. Character is an old man who's children have moved on and spouse died about a year ago. Was content with simple life... but recently has been unable to sleep, having dreams of distant places and far-flung wonders. He finally gets up one morning, resolves himself, packs a bag, and walks out of town to find whatever lies outside his village. Congratulations Grampa, you've been picked by a travel deity. (works well for an old character in a low-level game, begs for cleric or bard).

53. Character is a naturalist. Keeps a logbook, cataloging the interesting creatures (animals, magical beasts, etc) of the realm. Perhaps out of personal curiosity, perhaps as a researcher/explorer for a noble, or on behalf of a deity.

54. Family needs money. Perhaps Dad worked up a huge debt and siblings will soon be sold into debt-slavery. Perhaps brother is indebted to the local Thieve's guild and has to cough up his gambling debt within a month or he'll get to meet the guild's collector, a half-orc named Forehead.

55. The character's sibling pretended to be rich and went to an upscale bar. S/he's been kidnapped, and the character has received a ransom note demanding a sum that's outrageous for the family (but the kidnapper assumes, by the dress of the victim, that the family can afford it). The character either has to 1) get some money fast, or 2) find a way to get the sibling back.

56. Family member or friend is sick, suffering some magical disease. Perhaps an affliction has hit the entire town. The adventurer is seeking a cure.

Character is a very young girl, 10 years old, with surprising natural magical/mental/martial arts ability. The town she lives in is frightend of her abilities and is thowing her out to the wolves. Little girl latches on to the closest adventuring group and its paladin/cleric/barbarian defends and befriends her. She travels with them and becomes the BBEG.

#59) Wants to get some, some and then some. As in Wine, Women and Song. Or Wine, Men and Song, for a female adventurer.

#60) Believes that s/he is destined to conquer the world, and is adventuring to form alliances and create a power base.

#61) Is searching for a perfect pet. As a child, the character's parents always answered "No" when the character asked "May I keep her/him?".

#62) Has an incurrable disease and is looking for a cure. Unfortunately, the disease cannot be cured even by an act of a deity, but the character doesn't know that.

#63) Aspires to be the ruler of a republic or democracy, and wants to use adventuring to springboard her/himself into fame. Plans to be a war hero.

#64) Is in search for the perfect entertainment. Wants to create something that combines eye-hand coordination with illusions. (N64 tribute)

#65) In search for that perfect high. Tries every drug at least once, and has max ranks in Craft (alchemy). Is also a drug dealer and an abuser.

#66) Is on a mission to purge the world of "that evil number". Has no idea what "that evil number" is.

#67) Aspires to be the world's most beautiful living thing, and travels to prove it, as well as kill those considered more beautiful.

#68) Is devoutly religous and considers making babies the natural way to be a sin. Travels preaching abstinence.

#69) A professional professor at some magical academy tasked with researching the earthly delights, especially those concerning the flesh. Is silvertongued.

70. Wants to go out with a bang!
71.Wants to avenge his/her father/mother, but takes it too far and wants to kill all members of the race that killed their parent/parents/family. (actually used this.)

#73 because if the world largest dungeon was in your backyard you would strap on your armor, grab a shovel and pack a lunch too.

#74 pain heals, chicks dig scars, and glory lasts forever

#75 ran away to join the circus, found it was run by vampiric gnomes and thought he would be safer in a dragons lair with some companions.

#76 woke up on a beach one day with no memory of who or what he was, but all these strange people keep showing up to serve their "master" which is apparently him... he also seems to posses some really strange powers when he gets mad. (my wilder thrallherd)

#77 got drunk, hit his head on the bar passing out and a vision of a god appeared and told him to quest for blah blah blah. decided it might have been the beer, but better not to risk it.

#78 married to a gold digger who demands vast amounts of platnum and gems to finance her obsession with being better than all the other spolied little girls in the kingdom, husband if forced to adventure to support her in the lifestyle she has become accustomed to.

#79 married to a broke but kind hearted nobleman who's compulsive need to help the poor and downtrodden was leading to the ruination of his house. Wife decides to leave the bower of sewing and needlpoint to life a life of adventure and glory and send home vast amounts of treasure to help restor her dear sweet husbands fortune and title.

#80 son or daughter of 79 or 79 forced to adventure because the other partner is dead. (possibly due to the fault of the other parent, but feels duty bound to restor the family house and name)

#81 nothing looks sweeter than sunrise from atop a bloodsoaked mountain of dragon horde....

#82 really really likes the sound that undead make when a cleric spontaniously destroys them, but since they arn't a cleric the only way to hear that most sweet of sounds is to lead and protect them into combat situations.

#83 massacist that digs the feelin of clerical healing. Only way to get injured and not raise suspicions is to adventure.

86) Demon slayer. Everyone from her hometown is dead, except for her little brother, who has amnesia and is under the control of the BBEG (and committed an atrocity while under his control).

87) Monk in the same group as 86. Also fights demons. A curse was laid upon his family by the BBEG generations ago. Constantly womanizes, and gets slapped by 86 constantly as well.

92. The PC want's to be the best.Around. 'Cuz nothings ever gonna' keep him down.

93. The PC is a vetran from a previus war, and knows no other life than the life of a warrior.

An since InsanePsycoRabbit brought up reasons for adventuring from animes...

94. PC seeks an artifact a great power to return a family member to life. The characters sibling is a Iron Golem with the soul of the characters sibling attaced to it (the sibling died in a previus attempt to bring back the dead family member).

:D :D
Other ideas I've heard for roleplaying as Al included a Large awakened suit of armor, and Warforged.

95. Is also looking for aforementioned artifact to extend her own life, and won't let anything get in the way of that. Would even commit genocide to get it. Has extended her own life before with this artifact, but needs more of it now. Is aided by a number of homunculi representing/named for the Seven Deadly Sins. The teacher of the PC mentioned in 94 was a student of hers.

96. Cursed by an evil old hag: whenever the character trys to settle down or make a home, those around him start to die, often in violent accidents and in bizzare circumstances of freakishly bad luck.
He fell into the adventuring lifestyle to keep on the move and avert the curses effects, gets skittish and annoyed/worried when the party stays more than a couple of days in one place and is frightened to allow himself to love, fearing what might happen.

97. The characters home villiage (in the sticks) was wiped out by a goblin warparty, she is the only survivor! :D

#99) Shares his/her body with a spirit of opposed alignment and occaisonally gets forced into things they would never do.

113) The character's loved ones were all killed in a horrific tragedy (such as the Mourning in Eberron). Knowing full well that ressurection magic won't bring them back, the character searches for darker avenues that may reunite him with his loved ones once more.

My current character, Cadeus Harkon (N cleric 13/Heirophant 2 of Life & Death), did this. Check out his bio below to see a cool example of how to pull off this character archetype:
Appearance: Cadeus is dark in both appearance and mood. With his long white hair, dark ruddy skin, chiseled features, and intense gaze, he has an air of power about him that few others can match. He would be considered handsome if only it weren’t for his frightening appearance.

Clothing: Cadeus prefers black clothes of various kinds (the so-called Mourningwear worn by so many Cyran refugees). He disdains the typical robes common to spellcasters, realizing that such garments would only make him an obvious target to enemies. He also prefers clothing that allows him to easily hide material components and devices that may not be socially acceptable, such as humanoid finger bones, poison, and the like.

Personality: Those who know him say Cadeus was touched by Xoriat in his grief. Despite his intermittent madness, he is very cunning and keenly aware of his surroundings. He has become a masochist of sorts, scarring his arms with sharp instruments in order to keep his mind clear from thoughts of his horrific past. It is only through the blurred redness of the physical pain that he can escape the tormenting images of his two beloved children, Lorai and Daltin. Like the Children of Winter sect, he believes that death is inevitable and that only the strong will survive the coming of the end of the current age. To this end, he seeks out extremely violent mercenary jobs, both to make himself stronger and to further study the nature of life and death.

Region of Origin: Cadeus grew up in Eston, Cyre as a cleric of the Sovereign Host up until the Day of Mourning. Having lost everything on that tragic day, he began traveling the world taking on the most violent jobs he could find—utilizing new, darker powers.

History/Background: Cadeus and his young brother, Gedrel Harkon, were visiting a sister church in Seaside, the City of Sails, when the dead gray mist appeared and engulfed everything. With hundreds of other terrified citizens, the Harkon brothers huddled on the nearby docks only feet from the mist’s deadly touch. Fearful for the wellbeing of his friends, Gedrel ventured into the strange mist on the first day; only to collapse and die the moment he set foot upon the land. After seeing his brother fall, Cadeus ran to him only to be tackled by several burly sailors. It took six men to hold Cadeus back as the mist enveloped Gedrel’s corpse.

Survivors crazed with grief and desperate to see what happened to their kin, dared the mist on the second day…and were unharmed. The search of Seaside for survivors began. No bodies were found however, not even Cadeus’ younger brother. Worried for the rest of his family, Cadeus trekked across the blasted graveyard of his country to his hometown of Eston. He found the remains of his old home, but found not but a nightmare that would torment him everlasting. His two young children had hidden themselves in a closet in fear. Lorai and Daltin’s charred remains lay there still, the surrounding closet walls having protected them from the eldritch energies like so much parchment. The sight shattered Cadeus’ resolve and he had to be forcefully removed from the Mournlands. His wife, Erine, was never found.

Like so many others that day, Cadeus’ life changed forever. He lost all faith in his church, fell into a deep depression, and was nearly killed by a unique magical disease which robbed him of his health (the disease is presumed to have originated from the Mournland). Mad with grief, Cadeus attempted to end his life by throwing himself bodily into the raging rocky river rapids of the Dagger River in Southern Breland. Fate, however, simply refused to end his misery. As his body lay broken upon the rocks, a pair of poachers, who had been hunting illegally nearby, pulled him from the river and carried him to the nearest city for treatment.

In the coming months after his attempted suicide, all that was left for his mutilated body was pain, an endless blur of throbbing agony and heartache. In the end, it was in this pain that he found clarity. On the first anniversary of the Day of Mourning he chose a new spiritual path, one he believed would grant him powers over life and death—the power, he hoped, to bring his family back together again.

Character Hook: You cannot kill a man who is already dead!

116. (Cleric of a Lawful Deity)--looking for an honest person, not having much luck.

117. A skilled blacksmith that has no patience, and just keeps breaking whatever he's working on because of this lack of patience. Eventually, he has to sell the shop to eat, and that's pretty much it. (Fighter or Barbarian with a Maul and Sunder).

121.) To make Kender soup.
[Had a wizard in AD&D whose DM plagued him constantly and incessantly with thieving, annoying kender gnomes. So unrelentingly did the gods punish him with the "rats" (as he called them) that he eventually snapped. He modified a volcanic caldera and filled it with water that soon became a boiling broth with the steady supply of kender that he regularly dropped into it. Sadly his master plan was foiled by some damn holy order of Solamnic knights or something (can't remember exactly) who though that he was being unnecessarily cruel. The last time his old adventuring companions ever saw him, he was wild-eyed, discheveled, hog-tied and being dragged to the executioner's block screaming, "No... can't leave yet... not finished with my work! Can't you see them? They're everywhere! They're in your cellar, in your broom closet, in your rafters! In the trees, in the wardrobe, in...MY... BEARD! Ah ha ha ha haaaa! Kill them... kill them... kill them aaaaall!"
A pity... I liked that character too. :( ]

122 Her homeland is an occupied nation, and she wants learn the warrior's ways, to train others, so that her nation, long a province, be a nation once again. (Works just as well for a wizard)

123. He was conned into it, and isn't sure how to get out. They party leader (for instance) hired him for what he thought was just a temporary job escorting a caravan a few miles. Once he was in, neither the terms of the contract nor the rest of the party would let him go.

124) Stupidity. The character is so stupid that any idea sounds great and they can't help but get in to trouble. *cough* sorry... an adventure.

127. Ex-wartime hero, finds his lover in bed with another pirce (is a prince himself) and kills him. Is on the run from imperial authorities, but it forced to return home not only because he started a civil war, but because gods (basically) told him that "darkness gathers beneath your empire, the spirits will stand alone again wethinks, man has e'er failed when required" determined not to have mankinds live up to it's dank reputation and find out whether his lover was actually unfaithful or just acting on orders of her politician father, (possibly has a child he doesn't know about)

128. Self-employed. Claims to have been hired to protect the group, though no such offer has ever been made due to the untrustworthiness of the character.

Yes, it's a campaign reference. Our exact offer to the admitted cutthroat shadowdancer was: "If you turn yourself in, I think you can get some 20,000 gold."

129. Through some mishap, has been sold into slavery by some German guy, and is now in a place not unlike Hell where he must fight in a gladiator tournament. Is still PO'd at the German guy because now he can't go back and see his girlfriend, and he has to apologize to her for doing something...
(this is happening in the campaign i'm currently playing in)

132: Character is a memner of a civilization that thinks magic is for panzies and that all magic users should die. Goes on a conquest to destroy all magic users, eventually finding out that the only thing that's kept him alive is magic (the cleric never told him that he was secretly casting cure spells on him).

yes, I have a character like this.

134. To prove that magic is weak by defeating powerful mages without the use of spells or magic items.

Doing this at the moment, funniest moment is when our sorcerer/cleric was caught in melee with half-a-dozen enemy soldiers, and I had to go in and provide a distraction (taking ~80p damage in the process).

137) Likes to collect shiny objects. Adventuring offers so many opporunities to collect rare and exotic shiny things. Hopes to one day have a collection of shiny things that rivals a dragon's hoard.

138) Believes it is his/her divinely appointed duty to heal the hurts of good people. Unfortunately, due to the foolishness of most adventurers, this current party especially, he/she has spent most of his/her time with this current party keeping them patched up. While there are others in the world that need his/her help probably just as much as this current party, he/she cannot seem to leave them alone for too long before someone does something stupid and gets hurt. (my current character)

139) Thinks that things look really cool when they explode. Adventurers tend to get in situations where they need things blown up, so tagging along is win-win. (my previous character, a Warmage who considered a Fireball spell to be the solution to most problems).

140) Likes to get women under the sheets. And everyone knows that the ladies always swoon for the sexy, brave, adventuring hero. His penchant for the underage daughters of the local nobles has got him run out of more than one town. (This could get awkward if it was a female character instead of a male one).

141) It is not the renown, the treasure, the glory, or the women, that make adventuring worthwhile. It is the journey itself that is the most important, for it leads to leads to spiritual enrichment and a deeper understanding of the nature of life.

142) Has a deeply felt, profound love for Magic, and learns Magic for the sake of Magic itself. Is almost obsessively bent on expanding his magical knowldege Studies and travels the world for the sake of learning rare, exotic and powerful spells. Seeks to join the Arcane Order, but more as a means to the end of expanding his arcane knowledge rather than an end unto itself. (This was going to be my current character, but someone already was playing an elven Wizzard with the racial substitution levels and the Colegiate Wizzard feat).

143) Plays a mean banjo and loves to entertain. Travles the world, in search of a greater player he could learn some musical technique from. Often gets into musical duels with other players of stringed instruments. (If I could play banjo and knew Dueling Banjos, this could actually be rather fun to play).

here is the resons in my party

138) has never tried anything else (has no memory of his life before reaching adulthood)

139) was reared by a dragon, and was thus thaugth to be greedy

140) trying to find a cure for the vampires weakness to sunligth (this guy is a LG spell-stiched aquatic-elf vampire figther/palladin/rouge)

141) has fallen in love with 139, keeps the greed and adventurelust going because it would be dificult to live peacfully with a person who looks less human than a half-dragon

yes it's a monstrous party 138 is half-dragon half-golem half-orc cleric/barbarian
139 is deathtouched lesser bozak white dragonspawn sorc/wild mage (yes totally insane)
141 was the only relatively normal caracter in the team, halfling rouge/invisible blade/shadowblade

143) On a mission to find their parents..but gets sidetracked into a advendturing party. :P

I'm currently using 142 for my Elf Bard, and 143 for my Human Cleric (she was orphaned & left on the steps of her now-church but before leaving on a mission from the same church she received a map and such that was directions on how to get to her parents).

#144) The character wishes to become the head of a secret society, but their ancient rituals dictate he fulfills a certain difficult task first. Possible tasks can be gain 100,000 gold by any means possible, kill 1000 orcs, master the spell Time Stop, etc, etc. (Adapted from The Mastership Game, author's name escapes me, perhaps Scott McBain?)

#145) Is paranoidly afraid that he'll turn out to be a bad person like his father was, goes out into the world to do good and prove to himself it's not true.

#146) Trophy Hunter, wishes to fill his house with trophies from 1001 different creatures so he'll always have a story to tell the grandkids.

#147) Is cursed or blessed by Fharlaghn (or similar diety), unable to stop travelling. Takes on the adventuring lifestyle as a way of ensuring he can eat, as he can't stop for a career anywhere. Gets antsy when not travelling after a few days.

#148) Profession: Cook. Is searching for a rare, unspecified ingredient that he believes will make his dishes famous. Fails to notice or doesn't care that he's gained 7 levels in Fighter while doing so. Can be changed to a bard seeking the ultimate song, a painter seeking the ultimate colour, etc.
