1. Sailor: Master of the high seas that he knows like the back of his hand, this swashbuckling lad is like a hurricane with his saber and knife. With his trusty dolphin companion and loyal crew, he wanders the high seas in search of adventure, bounty, honor or the heads of pirate scum. Favored enemy: pirate

2. Caver: While goblinkind dread the dwarven warriors who storm into battle with the cry of a warhorn, they should instead be fearing the ones who don't. The scout of his delve, this warrior feels the pulse of the mother earth in his veins and uses it to deal death with a heavy and light war-pick to the foul creatures that haunt his beloved caverns. Favored enemy: goblin

3. Vigilante: This ranger wears a black cape instead of a green one and leaps skillfully from rooftop to rooftop- the viler thugs of the underworld watch their step under his careful eye, for when that raven swoops from his perch in the sky, he will not hesitate to stain his blade with the blood of his favored enemy. Favored enemy: criminal

4. Village Sheriff: the only thing that stands between the mountain orcs that destroy all in their path and this stout-hearted warrior's beloved farming village is his quick and deadly staff. Because of the cunning of his mind, the goodness and bravery of his soul and the strength of arm gained from ploughing the fields, the sheriff's fellow farmers have offered him his badge, and he and those willing to fight at his side protect the farmlands from the scourge that threatens from the darker parts of the valley.

5. The Runner: He travels light. His job is to run swiftly overland, faster through rough terrain than a horse, and longer than a horse over open ground. He's a messenger and scout whose swiftness, like a well-timed arrow, may be the land's salvation when a warning must arrive before force.

6. The Hunter: He seeks prey, trying to find an ever increasing challenge. The thrill of the hunt soon pales when he takes on the top of the animal food chain and wins. Then there is only the most dangerous prey...

7. Foe Smiter: Raised from a young age in the wilds, tought the habits and traits of a favored enemy . His arrow finds the vitals more often than the mere flesh. He tracks his foe down and dispatches them ruthlessly and efficiently.

8. The Recluse/Hermit: Through some tragedy or betrayal, the recluse has taken to the wilds to escape it all. He doesn't mind once in a while heading to a villiage for a new axe or tool, but once done he returns to the wilderness as soon as he came. He's antisocial and sometimes outright rude. If he is an adventurer, he's either a sole adventurer, or coerced, or compelled by love. Probably he'd also start adventuring at middle age or old age. In spite of it all, he's very philosophical, possibly an avid reader, and lives not in a cave, but a splendid but basic little cabin somewhere...

9. Big Brother: The diametrical opposite of the archetypal "robin hood" ranger, this lawful evil enforcer serves his tyrant monarch with cruel pleasure. While most rangers use stealth to avoid combat or to get the upper hand in it, this villain uses it for subtler, more sinister purposes. Odds are, you're going to obey the laws of opressors as long as you're trapped by the sometimes valid, sometimes illusory threat that maybe, just maybe, one of these skilled members the secret police is watching you. And believe it, big brother is watching you.

10. Davey Gnome: Named after the first giant slayer, a young shepherd named David who took down a giant with a toss of a sling bullet, these mischievous and adventurous gnome rangers bravely protect their communities from the dangers of hill giants with skilled aim with darts, bows, crossbows and slings. On rare occasion, a gnome bravely takes up a sling like the hero of legend and singlehandedly slays one of his humongous foes, earning great honor for himself among his kinsmen.

11. Guide: This ranger lives in very hostile enviornments. Unusual and extreme climates are definitive of the land, and survival against the enviornment is as important as defense against its unique predators. These rangers takes expeditions of travellers under his care and provides safe passage for them. Their inspiration is the taming of the land. If an adventurer, he would likely be driven to protect others like him.

12. Botanist: Typically older than most adventurers, these rangers have a scientific respect for nature; they appreciate nature for its complexity and usually express fascination at newly discovered aspects. These men develop whatever combat skills they possess from extensive and hazardous field work, while chiefly focusing on the more scholarly disciplines of the ranger. High INT scores and lawful alignment are the most distinctive features.

13. Marauder: Evil and savage, marauders pillage nearby settlements, taking what he wants and when. While quite brutal and thuggish, they are usually a bit more business-minded than barbarians. He may intimidate a community and sieze its harvest, but would only commit grand scale violence out of extreme frustration or continual disobediance. Most members like to feel "in control" and vary all over the law-chaos axis, but all are evil.

Mmm, Rangers!

My personal favourite class... I'd contribute, but I'm exhausted after college today. Give me while and I'll think of something.

14. Renegade. Previously a maverick soldier in the local military, this ranger discovered the corrupt rank system of captains seeking promotion and generals drunk on their own power, so killed one of them. Hunted by the military, sought by the man whose execution he halted with the life of another, this ranger is never one to stay in the same place for long. An innocent samaritan, hunted for a crime he committed.

15: The Thrill Seeker. Bored with the buildings and bustle of city life the thrill seeker finds his joy the only place he can... the wild. Whether its scaling a mountain face just because it is said it cannot be done or exploring ancient ruins, this ranger only truly feels alive when pushed too his limits

16: The deadliest game hunter This ranger seeks to prove their skill against the deadliest game of all... humanoids. Probably abused and bullied as a kid, this character takes a grim form of pleaure in humiliating and slaying humanoids of all kinds. Doesn't necessarily have to be evil, but never really good.

17: The Death slayer Knowing they could never stick to the staright and narrow road of a paladin, this ranger has learnt how to dispatch undead with stealth and silence rather than light and devotion.

18. The Revolutionary: This repentant ranger springs from an evil humanoid tribe. He loves what his people have the potential to become, but hates what they currently are. In the bullying tradition of the savage humanoids, he hones his cunning and martial prowess for the strength to crush corrupt chieftains and traditionalists, and the wisdom to lead the remainder of his kind to better things. Favored Enemy: His own race.

19. The Pack Leader: Lacking the means to truly fit in among the citizens of an ordinary society, this ranger has bonded instead with the untamed denizens of the deep woods, hunting as the alpha in his own pack of wolves. Swift and savage, he works with his lupine companions to bring down prey- or any unwelcome interlopers.

20. Hunter-Killer: Hunts down and kills targets. Possibly for profit, possibly to ease his own guilt. Most likely works as an assassin, or is an ex-assassin. Has skills in infiltration and assassination. For a twist, his favored enemy could be (if using Urban Ranger rules from UA) members of his previous organization.

^^An actual character I ran. Very interesting. Was also a gestalt character with Slayer levels.

21. The Hunted - Stumbling across a menacing force of evil, you have been marked and hunted. You run until you can run no more, you hide in every crack and crevise, yet they still follow you. Your skills of survival are needed to elude the evil trailing you. No one will help you and you're constantly on the move. You study thier henchmen ready for the day you tire of flight and prepare to fight.
