| kimli01-08-08, 04:43 PM | I have to make a new PC for a campaign. I have yet to play a rogue in 3.5, and wanted to go ahead with it, as this is possibly the last leg of the campaign for us. We are thinking of doing a high level thing for the sake of doing it, as we have not played epic in 3.5 I have the following base stats (We use 4d6 drop the lowest): 16,15,15,15,12,10 I was contemplating a Halfling rogue. What I would love is a few ideas to use. My basic concept is to make him stealthy, and use invisibility (magical, or hiding) to get to use a short bow and sneak attacks from a distance. Keeping back away from mele and shooting in. I just don't know if it's better to spend money on things like mithril chain shirt + 5 with an amulet of natural armor +2 to get an AC bonus of 11 (9 + 2)., or using the money to get ways to hide, etc. Then purchasing a shortbow +4 , Light Mace +2 . I also would have to get a travel cloak for the protection, as we are a cold climate, something of a "everfull" quiver of sorts. Is there one? Also, a "something" of invisibility. What do you guys think? and what feats, other ideas would you guys have to make it better? Changing anything is ok (ie: race, items, adding a PrC, etc) Thanks a Million, |

IMHO, if you want to use a short bow for your sneak attacks, you might be better to find items that help you stay invisible than boosting your AC. Try to see what would be the maximum gold you can spend on a single item, and if you can start with a Wand of Greater Invisibility @ 21K gp. You would have to maximize your Use Magic Device to use it though. |

Then build up to the crossbow sniper feat. 60 ft sneak attack range. Then grab one of the collars from tome of magic that grants the dark template so you can use hide in plain sight. Of course I'm horrible at optimization so I usually just abuse diplomacy. CO boards could definetly give you better. |
| I_roll_ones01-12-08, 04:36 AM | I've talked to a guy on the CharOP boards, doesn't that count for something? What races, books, classes, and items are allowed? There are other halfling races, if you can use them. What is the rest of the party? How much on talky or other non-combat skills? |

Just for an example, knock the chain shirt down from a +5 to a +4. That saves you 9000gp, more than enough for (for example) a Ring of Protection +2. This not only boosts your overall AC by 1, but also boosts your Touch AC by 2. Generally, you're better off with several small bonuses from different places than you are with one or two huge bonuses. Assuming your party's Cleric plans to use Magic Vestment and Greater Magic Weapon on a daily basis, buying a couple of Pearls of Power of the appropriate level and asking him to cast the spells on you as well can be cheaper than buying actual magic armor and weapons (although you'll be vulnerable to Dispel Magic). |
| The_Shaman01-12-08, 05:59 PM | If you want a pure rogue in higher levels, you'll need to cope with those creatures whom you can't normally sneak attack. There are some crystals in the MIC, but they're only for melee weapons, and you can only put 1 in a weapon. IIRC Dungeonscape has a feature that can help - get it. Apart from that, if you're okay with FR races the Strongheart Halfling gets a bonus feat instead of one of the racial abilities, and that can be pure gold for a rogue. |
| kimli01-17-08, 01:48 PM | Thanks a lot to everyone who helped out. I will use all of the advice. The charOP board seems to concentrate on level dips, which my group tries to stay away from. I will see what I can find there though.. Thanks. I'll post my final build this weekend. |
| CrimsonDeath01-17-08, 04:35 PM | The charOP board seems to concentrate on level dips, which my group tries to stay away from. That is one of the easiest ways to get versatility, but there are a few 20-level builds around, and and many one base class/one prestiege class builds. As long as you make it clear up-front that you want to avoid dips, most of the advice will take that into account. (A few people, in their enthusiasm, will skim the post and miss that part; I'd suggest thanking them and politely pointing out the problem.) If you just tack some feats on to your original post (Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, and Rapid Shot, for example) and include a list or general description of available source material, you can probably cross-post to the CharOp boards and get some decent advice. |
