I plan on PrC'ing into a Holy Liberator in 3.0. Currently, I'm making a Rog3/Ftr3 and my next level, I'd like to pick Holy Liberator.

I was wondering what's a good storyline or at least logical explanation for picking up Holy Liberator? There doesn't seem to be any formal training or anything. Also, we're playing in a God-low environment where Clerics are more rare, but Paladins are unaffected.

There is a Paladin in the group, would be lame to say the Paladin taught my guy a thing or two about looking toward divinity in yourself?

Any cool ideas?

Well I could say you are of the "steel the rich to feed the poor" type of guy who's deeds manage to get the attention of a like minded deity to grant him the PrC.

As it happens I also play a rogue/fighter who's going to become a Holy Liberator.
Basically he's on a quest of redemption. He started out as a common thief but slowly became a mercenary instead, mainly because he started feeling bad about stealing. While being a mercenary he came in contact with good-aligned clerics (Paladins?) that showed him a different and better way of doing things. He has then deceided to become a champion of the poor and downtrodden to redeem his past deeds.

My view is that Holy Liberators loathe institutioanl injustice and oppression. They see the ultimate evil as the chaining of people's minds and souls. A Paladin fights against evil and holds up society as the ideal way for people to interact.

A Holy Liberator rarely agrees. He sees the petty evils of slavery and enslavement as being unendurable.

Good ideals for a Holy Liberator:

- Free the Slaves. Classic and powerful

- Liberate the mind. Champion free thought and expression. Just because it is new doesn't make it bad. Expose the petty evil of institutions and force them to reform.

- Commando against the dark powers. Many evil outsiders (devils) and undead seek to enslave the minds of others. Whether it is a vampire or succubus the Holy Liberator fights to protect people from this.

The Paladin could teach the hatred of evil but a Paladin will support social structure and order. A Holy Liberator will demand that such structures prove their worth. A Paladin could isnpire a Holy Liberator but they will never work together easily. A Paladin might free slaves but if it is the law they will be reluctant (see the Jedi in Star Wars 1). A Holy Liberator will never consider this an option and will seek to destroy what holds them in thrall.

A more classic example is Ivanhoe vs. Robin Hood. Both wanted to remove an evil tyrant. One did it by challenging it through acceptable lines of authority and seeking a legal remedy. The other organized a revolt and a system or armed banditry.

Classic distinction. Hope that this helps.
