A bit of help fleshing my character out... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I recently created a new character, used him in a game. I didn't get to really develop a backstory (I was working on my massive adventure for our main campaign) so I played him on impulse, just getting a feel of how he'd react and act. Basically, the general premise is a human wizard who's getting on in years, becoming forgetful. He lacks regard for himself, really, as well as for others that much (regard as in physical safety) and a bit young-at-heart. He did, for instance, slide down a cotton-candy rope via his quarterstaff. He's also good at heart, really, but can be a bit hard on people and things, except for his cat.
As another example, he also jumped off the top of the ferris wheel. He cast feather fall but he didn't tell the other party member (small group that session) and surprised him completely.
I just need a bit more help fleshing him out, and if some one could suggest a proper alignment (D&D 3.5) for him, I currently have him at neutral, but he's far more chaotic than I thought.

As to alignment he definitely sounds Chaotic but what is his stance of the Good/Neutral/Evil spectrum? I would recommend CG this way you have some freedom to break the rules but you are still a good natured hero type.

I agree with necroscoop. If he likes doing good things and sometimes just gets confused about them, a chaotic alignment would be a good way to represent his randomness. As long as he is willing to do good for others, even at expense to himself, he will be good- regardless of how he may screw up or forget things.

Name: Dale Minder
Race/Gender/Age: Human/Male/64
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Religion: Corellon Larethian
Single Defining Class: Wizard
Description: A tall man, he apparently shaves regulary. He lacks any facial hair. His hazel eyes and graying hair also add to the wrinkles on his face in making him seem old. Still there are many laugh lines along his face, and his eyes glitter with glee often. He appears exactly the sort of man you want to mug, except for the ferocious, black cat perched on his hat or on his shoulders.
Greatest Strength: His refusal to act old.
Greatest Weakness: The life of his cat.
Traits and Mannerisms: He has a small painting of his cat in his backpack. He often talks to Bast (the cat) at random times. He seems to have very little sense of personal danger, but isn't a fool. He's resourceful and brilliant as well. Somedays he talks about the grandchildren he's never met. He also has a strange view of a good time.
Modus Operandi: While adventuring he is daring and foolish, willing to leap off tall buildings in assurance of his spells. During combat, however, he is much less foolhardy, though he is not one to worry much about his allies: If they're adventuring with him, they ought to be able to take his spells dead on. Don't be near the bad guys when Dale starts casting AOE spells.
Background: He was born in a loving family with a brother and sister. Both of them were older and went on to lucrative careers in politics by becoming the sort of people who know everything. He, however, found himself accepted by the magic school in a nearby city. There, he studied for many years and met his wife, Thala. The two of them lived happily, having two daughters, until she died of old age, happy. Her last wish was for Dale to go out and have good times. Dale is, indeed. He lived for his wife, so doesn't mind terribly if he dies, but he is no suicidal, heartbroken lover-he's out for the best time he can possibly have.

But thanks, that helped...

Modus operandi (Often abbreviated MO) is a Latin phrase, approximately translatable as "mode of operation", used in this context to describe a character's characteristic personal patterns and style of doing things.

Look at the Character Compilation link in my signature for ideas.

PS - Feel free to post Dale Minder in the Character Compilation when you're finished with him.
