I am starting out with a level four changeling rogue. I have never played in Eberron and therefore never played a changleing before. I wanted to make her a little gritty, but wanting to avoid all the obvious stereotypical stuff. Her name is Took, and I really want her to be a miss independant bad ass. All I can come up with so far is the vauge idea that she was almost groomed for her role as a spy type character by her father. I'm thinking absent mother. Maybe spending time with lots of people who were associates of her fathers who would teach her the trades of lock picking, trapfinding, moving silently and gathering info etc. I would like her to be very self reliant, therefore fights from afar, has open lock and disable device.

Any help in creating her would be very much appreiciated. I need some names for the races she can imitate which Took could be short for. A back story. Motivation for joining a group of mercenaires in destroying a box which "doesnt exisit" other than payment. Some idea about what ranks to put in what skills. Feats and a wishlist of 5 magical items. I would really like some kind of hook to her story, something a little sinister.

Any help will be greatly recived as I am completly in the dark on this one!

maybe her father was a very high ranking member of a spy guild. she would therefore have access to many resources (training, equipment, knowlegde) and many of her father's assosciates could have helped in her upbringing

as for a motivation she could be sent out to prove herself in her father's eyes. her determination and grit could lead her to decline help from others, viewing adventureing as a test of her strength and resolve. she could be a lone wolf type character with a desire to test herself at any oppertunity.

she could also be adventuring to find her lost mother.

as far as a character hook goes perhaps one of her father's associates wants her father dead and sees an oppertunity in Took. maybe he secretly asks her to recover this box instead of destroying it. she's tempted with information regarding her mother. a moral dilemia could occur when she is forced to choose to betray the party or to give up information regarding her mother.

i hope some of this helps. after reviewing it some of it seems better and more playable than other parts but maybe you'll see it diffrently

You can introduce grit by having the father betrayed by his own spy network somehow (maybe she witnesses her father's death, and is either out for revenge or just simply embittered?), or have the father betray the spy network/employer, especially if it is something your character feels strongly about. Having her dad turn out to be a 'bad guy' would certainly dampen the average go-lucky adventurer smile we see all too often.

Or even pull a Mr. and Mrs. Smith thing, and have mom and dad work for different organizations without knowing it, and somehow end up pitted against each other (with you in the middle, or whatever...)

Just some random ideas.

Said AshSimmo:I need some names for the races she can imitate which Took could be short for.Good races for a low-level changeling to imitate are half-elf, half-orc, and human. Human is the easiest (no lowlight or darkvision to worry about), but half-elf and half-orc can be really good covers (because they're harder, fewer people suspect the changeling of trying). Don't forget the importance of language skills! Learn to speak Goblin, and Took can pass herself off as a Dhakaani hobgoblin badass...

The double vowel in "Took" works well with the examples of Orcish and Goblin the ECS gives us-- consider names like Ashtooka, Daanto'ok, or Ratookla. You could spread it out a bit, and get an Elento Okkera (good for a half-elf or human).

As for a "sinister" hook-- think of grandiose (but hidden) goals with questionable moral outcomes. For example, perhaps she wants to ultimately take over the Cabinet of Faces. What is she willing to do towards that end? If she achieves it, what would she do with a shadow network that answers only to her? What if she wants to destroy that organization and replace it with her own creation? Whether she will actually achieve this goal in the game is almost irrelevant-- what matters is that she has the audacity and strength of will to try.

Thanks! All of those have been really helpful! I really like the idea of her father being betrayed, and I'm thinking betrayed by her mother (although she doesnt know this). Recieveing a letter one her birthday after she has been looked after by the very people who have betrayed her! Bit alias, bit Tomb raider films, bit dark angel! My only problem now is what organisation her father was working for, one that he believed was just, but her mother was a double agent for and would have got him killed! As I dont know Eberron at all I am struggling. We are in Khovaire, in Breland at the moment, on the lightening rail. So she gains employment as a spy/inquisitor and seeks information on her mother, and the reasons for her parents death. AS for the grandoise idea, she wants to wipe out those responsible for her apretns death, she was taught to be lawful, but is so full of grief and anguish she will do ANYTHING!
