I'm having a little trouble coming up with a backstory for a chaotic good thief in the forgotten realms setting. I need to be at least partially devout to a god, and find a home region to come from.

The majority of my levels are gonna be in swashbuckler, and since their credo is better lucky than good, I thought that would fit.

I normally play evil characters, so most games I play it's, hey, he's got some nice stuff, *kills in a corner away from group then comes back after looting* so, what happened while I was gone?

Now in complete scoundrel it referenced Mal from Firefly, so a lot of people are gonna die, but I can't just go off and kill people for their stuff without a reason is what I gathered from that.

I'm thinking Dragon Coast since it's a big merchant city and all, and I was taking a barbarian level, so I was thinking I'd start as a roaming nomad brigand or something like that, and then move into the city for bigger marks.

though being a brigand/thief doesn't really seem like it would fall under the good alignment, unless I'm doing it for an orphanage or something, maybe.

I can't really think of any good backstories for a character like this or an area to be in.

I need a little help on where to start from.

This is what I have so far.

Picking pockets is supposed to be wrong, unless you're picking the pockets of other thieves. Returning what's stolen before anyone notices it's missing and taking a little off the top as a "service" fee is fair for everyone involved. That's pretty much all I've been doing to get by for awhile. And the occasional brawl where we strip the losers naked.

I was fairly confident I knew getting involved in other people's problems would get me in trouble sooner or later, though it's not like I can just ignore it when people mess with those weaker than them. It all started when I was walked down an alley. The local thugs were trying to rob someone and I hadn't had a good fight in awhile. I pounced on the first thug knocking him out cold, and then I drew my weapon and scared off the second attacker. Let's just say a guy packing a flaming shortsword isn't someone you wanna mess with. So I took a few gold coins that fell out of the pouch and handed it back to the man and walked off.

I went back to my hangout and as soon as I opened the door I got rushed by someone telling me there's gonna be a fight. Hell if I bother to remember people's names, but hell, no one messes with the people I vaguely remember, but live here. I tell them what I always tell them, "If violence was your last resort you failed to resort to enough of it." So we send most of them to fight these punks face to face while the rest of us take a more subtle approach. From the shadows echoing in the alleyway, I shout, "You must not know who you're messing with." At that point everyone drew their weapons and prepared for the fight to start. I cleave through an unsuspecting goon and as I rip into him with my blades as a fountain of blood sprang forth and with the rest of the thugs shaken from the sight, it wasn't too hard to rout them. Once again, don't mess with a guy with a flaming sword.

Once we were done looting and shaming the defeated we went back to our hangout. As we sorted out the loot I found an interesting pair of goggles I decided to keep. After that we all headed to church for a few hours. On the way out I was stopped by a clergyman, and handed a letter. Luck would have it, someone saw that streefight, and the Shadowmaster's wanted to talk to me about something. So I decided I'd check out what they wanted sometime tomorrow. Bad idea. I wake up in a room with a few people in cloaks playing a card game.
