In a recent campaign, I created what I though to be a pretty decent background. A sorcerer who came from a xenophobic, magic-hating community. I'm sure you have a picture of either a Chaotic Chaotic world-hating criminal, or a self-loathing loner. Either one seems pretty fun to roleplay, but which would be more logical? Would someone in that situation embrace and hone his magical talent? Or shun it and use it only when necessary? The campaign just started, so he wouldn't seem schizophrenic if I altered him a bit.

depends on his strenght of personality.

Did he rise above it to become a New York style flaming magic user, or does he still carry the weight of it around and is the "I carry a sword and pretend I am a fighter" Utah type magic user. I mean they both could of grown up in "don't be a magic user or you will get your ass kicked" small town Texas.

I think you have to look at what makes up the rest of the character background and if he was strong enought to forge his own identity. I think the averages go towards being in the magical wardrobe.

I think I picture him as being the "Yeah, beat me up, but at the end of the day, who's on fire?" type. The town really has more fear of him than anything.
