| Reaper537205-28-07, 06:04 AM | My DM is getting ready to start a new campaign with new characters and everything. i have a few questions about the character i have decided to play. let me give you some background first. I am playing a human monk with decent ability scores but here is my little issue i decided to make him blind from birth and i have read the rules for blind characters but are those for characters who become blind or is it for characters that have ALWAYS been blind? HAS ANYONE EVER PLAYED A BLIND CHARACTER BEFORE?? and if so what guidlines did your DM set up? My DM said my restrictions will be a bit different as i a have always been blind. but i wanted some input on this before i decide whether or not i will actually make him blind. I would appreciate it |

She took Blind-Fighting so she could reroll miss chances and the DM made her make listen checks to pin point the people around her. Oddly enough she was a blind knife thrower so sh did a lot ranged and in the beginning she alsmost hit my rouge a few times while firing into combat. If your DM will alow you can ask to buy monster feats like tremor or blindsense to account for how your character sees. |

I played a blind spy character back in 2nd edition once, and it was a huge challenge, but ultimately a lot of fun. It should be even easier in 3.5e since the rules for blindness are much more clear-cut. I think psions make the most effective blind characters, due to their ability to actually overcome the disadvantage with powers like Synesthete (which allows you to "feel" light). The duration is only 10 minutes per level, but its a measley 1 power point. By 6th level, for example, you'll be sighted for an hour at a time for a tiny fraction of your power points. This allows you to remain an effective character while still having periods of actual blindness for the sake of roleplaying. Wilders also have access to this power, but it seems a shame to spend one of their few 1st level power selections on synesthete. Likewise, psychic warriors have only a few powers to select, and they have even fewer power points to spend staying sighted. Just a note: it seems like Clairsentience would be the natural choice for a blind psion, but unfortunately, by the way some of their powers are worded they can be interpreted as being made useless by blindness. Clairvoyant Sense, for example, a key and defining Seer power lets you "see and hear a distant location almost as if you were there." Depending on how your DM interprets this, he may rule that your blindness prevents you from using this power to see at a distance. It also states that it "does not allow psionically or supernaturally enhanced senses to work through it," so you can't bring your Synesthete power with you. Personally I'd rule that the Seer is seeing at that location with their mind, not their damaged eyes (which are a part of the body, not the mind) but thats just me. Discuss it with your DM. ~Ginger |
