| cog_and_taz01-28-08, 03:23 AM | It was a proud thing to receive the call, back then. He left his family, his home, everything that he knew. It didn’t matter, he would return in time. Now, he was to fight for Cyre. Fight the greatest of all wars against those who were attempting to deprive Cyre of its rightful place. It seemed there were enemies everywhere – Karrnath, Breland, Aundair… yet they had been attacked time and again, and so he had no reason to doubt it. He had never seen anyone from outside Cyre before he went to war, and indeed, the first thing he saw at war was their blood. From that moment on, he was not entirely himself, only fighting night and day, never thinking, never mourning, never questioning. All in the knowledge that some day, he would return home victorious, and Cyre would regain its rightful place at the throne. Such were his days, until one day that he would never forget. Never could forget. The first warning came from the clouds, but he did not see them, did not heed them. They glowed a dark red together with the horizon, even though it was barely past noon. The second warning came from the ground, which cracked and shook as the red tide on the horizon came ever closer. This he heeded, and looked up, together with every soldier, Cyran or not, that were on the battlefield on that day. What they saw was a great red surge, carrying rocks, corpses and debris along with it, heralded by shattering earth and a blast of searing wind, engulfing all that it came across. He saw every soldier before him, friend and foe, engulfed by the onrushing tide of destruction, falling as though they were nothing more than leaves. The last thing he heard in his life was his own scream of terror. He did not know how much time had passed. Indeed, for some time, he thought that he had entered the afterlife, but soon he recognized where he stood for the very same battlefield that he fought on when he died, though it had changed almost beyond recognition. He wandered those wastes for months, slowly realizing what he had become – an undead monstrosity, no different from any other creature in this blighted, mist-filled land. Sometimes, he would even see a few that he recognized, shambling aimlessly through the mist. Yet it seemed that they had fallen into madness long ago. Cyre was dead, and now, where did he have to go back to? What meaning was there to this war, if the kingdom and the people he had fought for were little more than dust? One day, he came across a wall of gray mist. Tentatively, he walked through it, and saw a city in the distance. He did not recognize this place, but anything was better than what was left of Cyre. Slowly, hesitantly, he began to take his first steps toward this city. He did not look back – Cyre had lost all meaning to him. It was gone, buried, nothing to him now. All that was left now was the future, or what little he could carve out from this strange land. When the living are no more, who is left to care for the walking dead? No idea on a name for this guy yet, or a class, but he’s a human, and a survivor of the Last War and the Mourning…… sort of. Incidentally, the country I mentioned is Darguun. Didn’t even exist while he was alive, which is part of why I chose it. Thoughts? |

| cog_and_taz01-28-08, 04:04 AM | Thanks! And no, they'll probably be too scared to do more than toss some stones, at which point he shambles away. Also, Necropolitan template, the easiest way to an undead character :) P.S. my favorite bit of the story is actually the line at the end... |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose02-01-08, 07:04 AM | Very not bad. Only problem I see is that I don't really learn much about the character except that he tends to lose himself in battle. Depending on his rank and trainging I'd say a barbarian, ranger, or even knight. Are you considering heading for Cyran Avenger? |
| cog_and_taz02-01-08, 10:06 PM | heading for what? Also, he's not a barbarian/any sort of rager. During the war, the shock was a bit big for him, so he just sort of blanked out, and might as well have been a Warforged. |
| Terjon of the Blue Rose02-02-08, 01:04 AM | Cyran avenger. A prestige class for those Cyrans (particullarly soldiers) who refuse to accept that Cyre is gone. Some hope for a rebuilding some simply want revenge. A few even refuse to admit the war is really over. As for rage I got the feel he lost himself in the thrill of battle. That the fighting became the defining factor in his life. Remember that rage doesn't neccessarily mean anger. It can simply be adrenalin pumping as you throw yourself headlong at the enemy. |
