Name: Adaka'tur Wyrmborn
Race: Kobold
Class: Archivist
Alignment: LN

Adaka'tur was his tribe's librarian and researcher - it served his thirst for knowledge well, and kept him out of trouble. he liked the job, especially since it was one of few ways that he could keep himself out of battles. But one day, this peaceful life was shattered by the only one that even the chief would bow to - Flametongue, the crimson wyrm.

The master knew almost everything - yet his mind craved yet for every last piece of earthly knowledge. Dragons were like that, and to an extent, so was he - he could hardly blame them, either, knowing what it was like. he knew almost every spell in existence that an arcanist could ever hope to learn, yet there was one form of magic he knew precious little of: that of the gods.

One day, Adaka'tur found himself called to the dragon's chambers. With a strange mix of fear and excitement, he made haste to the hall, to see what the call was about. Flametongue waited there, with what seemed to be a spellbook held in one claw. Was he to become a wizard? That would certainly be the occupation of his dreams.

Slowly, the aged red dragon explained the situation - his craving for knowledge of divine magic, and how he must have it at all costs. he explained the art of the Archivists to the little kobold - mortals that would research divine magic, scribe it in tomes, use it without prayer to so much a single god.

Adaka'tur listened in growing excitement. Perhaps this was to be his new subject of research? There was nothing that excited him more than the prospect of discovering the unknown, and within his little tribe, this was certainly it.

he watched as the wall of the cave slid open, revealing the almost blinding light of the world outside, outside the cave, outside of his tribe, outside his world... he watched as the crimson wyrm slowly handed him the spellbook. he listened as the dragon's voice echoed throughout the cave.

"This is my final gift to you. Do not return until this book is filled with the magic I require."

he did not mention what would happen if Adaka'tur had failed, or if he had come back before the task was finished, there was simply no need. At that moment, he left, leaving behind the world he had spent his entire 62 years of life in, leaving it all behind for the dragon's grasp for greater power. Even his name was no longer the same - though he kept his name, the dragon had given him another - Virlym di hawi Irthos, "thief of magical secrets". If he could not return until the book was full, if he was to become a thief, than he will do just that, and by the gods above, he was going to do it right.

Archivist into Ur-Priest? Nah not enough hatred of the gods for that. Still I imagine he will, assuming he learns of them, seek them out for their knowledge. A very interesting character and an excellent veer away from the classic kobold (do they really live that long?).

Stylewise I wouldn't start with his role in the tribe for the story, though. It takes a bit of the focus off the quest for knowledge and puts it more onto the leaving the tribe. I think for this character the quest for knowledge is by far the more important of the two.

You've got it a bit wrong. First, he doesn't hate gods, but he isn't about to go praying, either. Also, cleric magic isn't something you can gather or teach, and Flametongue isn't about to go off and pray, as it would hurt his inflated ego.

his quest for knowledge isn't the main thing, either - sure, he's a bookworm. Still, he's only doing this because the dragon commanded him to, on pain of Pain. If he had it his way, he'd be sitting in a nice comfy chair in front of a fire, reading a book. Right now, he's devastated at being forced to leave everything behind (especially in such a hurry, red dragons are...less than considerate), but found a new reason to continue, and a source of determination. however, it hardly makes him willing, so the focus is actually meant to be on being forced to leave.

And yes, they live that long, possibly longer - 62 is rather young for a kobold.

In other news, the name is actually accurate - I used a draconic translator, with a rare amount of dedication. By the way, it seems just a wee bit ironic to me that he became a librarian partly to avoid trouble, and is being sent into a very dangerous situation precisely because of that...

Finally, Ur-priests aren't a matter of how much your character hates gods. It's a matter of how much you, the player, hates your DM, especially when comboed with an Archivist.

Didn't really think there was a hatred of the gods. I was more joking on that one.

I did pick up a little more dedication to the accumulation of knowledge than loyalty to the tribe but that may have been my mistake in the reading.

It's not just loyal. If you were told to leave your home, your town/city/village/whathaveyou, everyone you knew, and anything I might have missed for an indeterminate amount of time... are you saying the only thing stopping you would be loyalty to all of the above? I know it's hard to believe, but Kobolds have emotions too:P

People do it all the time. They call it going away to college.:P Many even stay away afterwards. Its all a matter of personality. From the read he seemed more like the type to jump at a chance at this kind of knowledge. Of course he would miss the tribe but it read to me like he would have left without any threat to push him on his way.
