Well I am starting a game soon and from the sound of it, we are probably going to be spending most of the time underground fighting drow and stuff. The thing is, I was thinking of playing a druid or a ranger, or possibly some combination of them and a swanmay. So I am trying to think of reasons why any of them would want to spend days(maybe weeks?) underground fighting drow and stuff.

I am sure a ranger could come up with a reason but a druid seems out of place and a swanmay almost seems silly. Then again I am not talking about dungeons but deeper underground and I am sure they have some underground animals or plants some where right? I am just not to sure what they got down there.

Basicly I am just looking for any information on underground wilderness type areas, or advice on playing a nature oriented character who is running around underground. Or anything else you may think would be helpful for building and playing a character like that.

How about a dwarven druid with a bat animal companion. Just because the caverns of the underdark seem lifeless doesn't mena they are. There are all sorts of fungal gardens and Miconids (Mushroom Men). Other than that any kind of druids will have reasons to go down into the depths if some one he knws was kidnapped by drow or some such stuff.

Rangers aren't only treehugging forest creatures as some may make out. They are valiant defenders of nature no matter the cost and also survivors in harsh environments.Maybe a combination of scouting/exploring new places or stop drow from defiling his home, could provide ample inspiration for him to fight a lot underground
