I am creating a Cleric7/Battle Smith5 and have a basic background of him being in charge of his clans forging, not many lvl12s can makes magic weapons and armor like a lvl22 after all.

The big problem that I come across is what would cause a dwarf to leave such a lofty and important position in his clan. I don't want to fall back on the destruction of his clan idea unless I have too. Any help would be apprciated.

He is on a holy quest to-

-find a rare and forgotten metal that is unbreakable, (and maybe light as a feather if you want to break reality)
-find a lost dwarven weapon/armor/forge that went missing centuries ago
-start his own clan... then another... and another

...hell... something as simple as going on a personally assigned quest to prove his love for a woman (these are always good... the character themselves set the quest... eg, "i will bring you a weapon forged by moradin himself to prove my love... etc")

Hope this helps some.

Having been a smith in the dwarven forges for years he has, at least in his mind, created everything there is to create. After seeing some exotic wepons from a far off land brought by traders to his town he realizes that maybe he doesn't know all their is to know about smithing, just dwarven smithing. Being a devout cleric he realizes his duty is to his clan but his mind continues to wander over the thought of new designs and new materials to smith with. After a few months he goes to the head religous figure in his area and asks for guidance. The figure tells him that to find if this is his true path he must commune with his good. A holy ritual is set up and for three days the dwarf does nothing but pray only stopping to drink water or eat a little bread. On the third he has a vision and his god gives him a holy quest to collect as many designs as he can to build the greatest store of blacksmithing knowledge the world has ever seen. To that end the holy smith goes on a pilgrimage to learn all their is to learn about smithing for the lowliest horse shoe design to the lost designs of old empires in a quest to fufill his sacred duty.
