| Domni Dalrose08-19-03, 11:21 AM | This past weekend during our weekly game..an NPC asked us our group name. We all looked around, blank faced and wide eyed. Er.r...uh... finally after about a 20-30 minute conversation we agreed on The Company of the Five Orchids. So in the vein of making lists of swearwords and witty rejoiners, I thought it'd be nice to have a handy list of adventuring group names. Either original or borrowed from fiction. :) Here's a few we came up with: Company of the Wolf Company of the White Orchid The Bloodied Roses The Black Company (from a book series) The Green Riders (book title) |
| Savras08-19-03, 11:48 AM | Oh, my group needs that. Can you give me more? I have the: Flaming Fools And that's that. Savras |
| Alrunic Silverfyre08-19-03, 11:58 AM | Well we had quite a few of those moments but as such, here are some of the adventuring names we came up with: Defenders of the Throne (Our first adventuring company was commisioned by the Cormyrian monarchy to stop a threat...see the Night Below box set for more info on that threat...) The Red Dragon Company (Our second group who faced the dangers of Dragon Mountain, another amazing 2nd edition box set). Seekers of the Five Swords (A custom name given by the DM to a group of PCs who sought to reclaim five evil swords that were forged by a demon to bring strife upon the world of Toril) Btw, as a fencer, I can really appreciate your signature. |
| Trydan08-20-03, 04:37 AM | One of ours, somewhat officially, is Expedition #37 of the Imperial Survey Office. Sounds drab, but when you look at the patchy map of the wilderness region that they have (a lovely prop of "aged" paper and caligraphy), you'll notice a little caption next to a blank section on the map: Expedition #36 of the Imperial Survey Office. Last seen heading west of this location. Lost?. That gives it suddenly a little bit more suspense. |
| TinySilverChalice08-20-03, 08:36 PM | Don't forget The Seven Wonders, Silverlove! |
| LordShade08-20-03, 09:33 PM | Some of ours: Order of the Ages Heroes of the Blue Dragon Inn (for lack of a better term) Beta Group (paramilitary organization in service to a city-state) One I want to use: Seven Lucky Gods |
| Veii08-21-03, 01:02 PM | A few of ours: Order of the Lightless Star Band of the Ashen Eclipse The Errant Conclave Swords of the Crimson Shadow The Hands of Steel, Song and Shadow Many others as well. |
| Daeri Maer'jiir08-21-03, 01:22 PM | The Harliquin eight |
| Gemini08-21-03, 05:51 PM | A group I DM: The Black Dance |
| Hope08-22-03, 04:06 AM | Very few of my adventuring parties were actually a formal group, so much as a group of rag-tag adventurers thrown together by circumstance. One group did, however, manage to earn a name for itself after ridding the area near a desert city of a blue dragon that had been terrorizing it. My character had recently become the High Priestess of Bahamut (by virtue of being his only worshipper - the chromatic dragons had wiped out the metallics ages ago, and Bahamut was practically powerless, until he contacted us after we killed one of Tiamat's children), so she liked the name. It was the one they used to refer to us in the gladiatorial arena in which we sometimes fought. The name? "The Dragon Slayers". Hardly imaginative, but it gets the point across. |
| Peepi08-23-03, 09:49 PM | I can't help but add this one: The Phleiming Beigels. This is a reference to an event at camp when someone stuck their bagel in the toaster for too long. It was funnier than it sounds, actually.:D |
| BlindMaster08-24-03, 01:35 AM | Last group I DMed for was a guild of rogues called "The Order of the Black Rose". |
| Zoticus08-24-03, 10:49 PM | Some of ours... Three Crazed Blades Firehaired Furries The Art and Blade Bold and Daring Brigade The Daisey-Picking Yugoloth Tooth-Pullers Sticks and Stones Brigade StormTroopers (Talos Worshipers) |
| Thokk_Gingobb09-02-03, 05:35 PM | This one was one that my friend came up with when his party was low-level and posting bulletins up all over the town: The Holy Thieving Maniacs This name came from the fact that the party consisted of a cleric (Jack), a rogue (Zoe), and a barbarian (Thokk Gingobb). May I also note that Thokk Gingobb is the greatest Half-Orc who ever lived and he could take down an Epic-Level character even though he's only level twelve. Just a little background information. |
| MontyPhank09-03-03, 03:23 PM | After the old Greyhawk hard back came out, we tried a number of adventuring company names. None of them stuck. But "The Band of Silver and Steel" was my favorite. Regards, Monty |
| Lhiannon Sidhe09-04-03, 04:13 AM | Knights of the North Star - This is more of a name for our gaming group, then the characters themselves. We have our own traditions and customs that have formed from years of gaming. For example, we have our own, very complex and confusing way to induct new members into our cult... er group ;) We've also developed our own "Gaming Language" which is indecipherable to outsiders. So many inside jokes between group members have evolved into sort of a slang language that we use to communicate at the table. If I were to say: "Somebody's mother looks all wavely, maybe we should make it happy before we go Leman Russ" My fellow group members would know exactly what I meant. A typical response might be: "Not my rice, I'm a Monk. All your base." And I would know exactly what they meant. |
| The Philosopher King09-08-03, 08:59 AM | The only thing even close to a party name we have - apart from "the bunch of psychopaths that hang out with that tall guy with the glowing eyes" is: The Oskar-ak Mining Corporation Oskar-ak is the (DOMT) granted keep our fighter/drunken master dwarf "owns", which is run by me, the paladin/knight inquisitor. The mine comes from our monk/psionic ninja's punching a 10x10x10 -ish cube into the ground as a house for our barbarian/feral berserker and finding a platinum seam. The name itself was a sign I wrote up to identify that the mine is ours to the city it is located about 30 feet from :) Lousy no-good peasants. We also have a sorceress/battle mage who doesn't feature in the story above, but I include here for completeness' sake. |
| gonzofighter09-08-03, 11:41 AM | I had a group once called the Black Ice company. 2 elves, 2 dwarves, and a human. |
| MeepoTheMighty09-08-03, 05:45 PM | The last time I DM'd, I made the group come up with a name, and the best they could come up with was "Ronin." In a FR campaign. Eventually after the fifth or sixth NPC responded with "My, that's quite anachronistic," they started to get the point and changed it to something else. |
| Laelenie09-09-03, 06:35 AM | IMC the PCs call themselves "the Bottom of the Barrel"... from when someone hired them and realized the weren't so skilled. Here in italy we say "Oh gosh, I'm really scratching the bottom of the barrel" and so the name... meaning I'm giving in the very LAST of my resources... "Sto veramente raschiando il fondo del barile con voi..." |

My PCs just go "Name? We're US!" or "We've known eachother for less than a week, tell them we're... errr... adventurers!" http://www.geocities.com/sirgrimsage/Smilies/Savrasrolleyes.txt Savras |
| servo09-10-03, 12:31 AM | Here's a few: The Withering Blades. (half elf druid, halfling barbarain, dwarf cleric, and a pyromanic human sorc.) The Elven Bane. (evil campian, hunted the high elves. same team as above, only evil.) Crew of the Silvertwister. The Ladyluck's Illgotten Goods. (dwarf cleric, elf ranger, human fighter, and a pyromanic sorc. All CG. known as "the huge bartab" campian) |
| Silvertongue09-12-03, 05:08 PM | The only group I've ever been in with something resembling a name was when my cthulhu group decided to try D&D with my sister and I as the only experienced (barely) players. We didn't pick the name before play but by the end of the first game we had rightly earned the title of 'The Bollock Buster Brigade'! We stormed a castle, assaulted everyone in the groin region, killed not a soul (though not many could walk) and stole all their valuble art work :D A wizard's staff does indeed have a nob on the end! |
| Toptomcat09-13-03, 02:12 AM | My friends, you forget the all-time classic... The Fellowship. |
| spike spiegel09-13-03, 07:16 PM | I played in a group that helped defend a city from an orcish horde. We made our stand with the city's defenders at a single slender mountain peak five miles outside the city gates. After a titanic battle in which three of our number and almost all the city's defenders fell, we prevaled. Our three fallen comrades could not be ressurected at the time (our cleric being one of the fallen and there was no cleric powerful enough left in the city). With that and all the people lost in the battle our group finally chose a name for ourselves: The Knights of the Crying Spire. |
| gonzofighter09-15-03, 12:50 PM | How about the Gallivanting Nancy Boys. |
| Tai Khan09-23-03, 06:13 AM | I haven't had a lot of luck with gaming in the past year so none of my groups stayed together long enough to actually come up with a name but in the past my two most successful groups were: The Juxtaposed Wombats : who brokered a deal between Zhentil Keep, Thay and Comryr. They were the Comryrian delegates. They kinda just showed up and said, "we're from Comryr, so we'll represent them." And, The 7(8) Demons of Komone : we could never figure out if there were seven or eight demons of komone, nor could we decide who was what number. I always felt that my elven sorceress was #3 but several other people disputed that fact. |
| Peepi09-24-03, 07:38 PM | The name of my current D20 modern group: The Super Furry Animals named after an event which left us all covered in fluff used for shag rugs. |
| EvilDuck09-24-03, 09:22 PM | Well, our party just got a Keep named Iscandor, so we named the group Iscandor. Original, huh? |
| Domni Dalrose10-29-03, 11:23 AM | :tiphat: Some neat and funny names folks :) Enjoyed reading these. |
| Fridwulf10-29-03, 11:48 AM | Our main group is called "The Children of the Boar". We came up with that name when Lythian, our huge and immensely strong wild elf fighter, literally stopped a charging wild boar by pounding its head into the ground with his bear hands. Since then, he's also known by his somewhat dubious nickname: Lythian Boarfist(er). :D |
| Teluvor10-29-03, 01:23 PM | Time to explain my sig here... We were playing a group of 3rd level characters pretty full of ourselves, when one day our little happy group was drawn into Ravenloft. We had to solve a puzzling haunting, where an executed criminal came back as a ghost to haunt his judge, and we didn't have a clue as to what was really happening. Everywhere we went (being the only "adventurer-types" around, we assumed we'd be the most powerful not-evil dudes in town), people were looking down on us, treating us like clueless children asking impolite questions... We'd finally grown tired of every street vendor and baker's wife asking us "who we thought we were?", so we started introducing ourselves as follows: "Uh, excuse us, we are Pro's and we were wondering...":P |
| Kolo10-29-03, 02:32 PM | I've played in games where veryone almost reached epic and STILL hadn't found a name... but there are a few memorable ones. "The Flaming Fannies"; the result of an adventure to an abandoned dwarfen mine in which only the three elf-blooded characters in the party survived, one with a flaming waraxe and another with severe burn wounds (unrelated incidents). The name was given at a banquet and it stuck. "Skullduggery"; Two severely anti-undead clerics and a paladin can do that to a group's name... "The Cormyr Purple Dragons"; We didn't pick this one exactly, it's just that there were five of us and the main antagonists were a band of the same size called "The Sembian Black Panthers", and the rogue of our group got the idea of seting up a match in an arena... it was sort of like the superbowl on crack  Come to think of it, our biggest reward from that was the admission fee... |
| eudas10-29-03, 04:00 PM | our gaming group (not the in-character group) jokingly refers to itself as the 'Order of Collateral Damage'... or OCD for short... ;) ...get it? get it? huh? :) eudas |
| Lokahn Mandrake10-29-03, 07:54 PM | Here are a few that I have either created as NPC adventuring parties in my campaigns or have played as a PC in: The Band of the Flaming Coin Heroes of the Dark, Knights of the Dawn The Deadorc Band The Infamous Trollmoors Band The Brotherhood of Flame Lawful Vengeance The Ivory Triangle Winter's End Axes & Arrows CCC (The Coin Collector's Club) |
| nick01200011-01-03, 06:44 AM | Well, the group I Dm (we do d20 modern) are a group called the Order of the Keepers. They are subcontractors of Department 7. |
| Lord_of_the_Seven_Towers11-01-03, 07:56 AM | A always my rule is, if you can't think of a name steal one of Robert Jordan's. The Band of The Red Hand |
| Der muede Joe11-01-03, 03:15 PM | my current party: ### DIRTY MOVES ### |
| J.Cutter11-10-03, 07:50 AM | I'm in three games at the moment in one game which i joined later the party is known as the 'Unknowns'. In the second game we decieded to use ' Birds of Prey' and then each pick a bird of prey as our nickname |
| Arilou_skiff11-10-03, 07:59 AM | I don't know the story behind it, but for some reason our FR party has come to call themselves "The company of the Risen Eyebrow" |
| Burbo Bungoslayer11-12-03, 07:32 AM | Once i was in a group called "the collective". That may not have very original, but it was darn appropiate. |
