*Edit: This thread has basically turned into a record of my character's adventures. However, I still welcome advice or constructive criticism on how to improve my roleplaying of him.*

I have an epic ninja character that I would like to ask for advice on how to roleplay. My own personality is loud, brash, outgoing, and mostly honest and straightforward, but this character is far from any of that. He's quiet, distrustful, sneaky, manipulative, and extremely deadly. He's never really had the chance to think for himself much, and basically served as a tool that his former master used to "remove" people and to spy. He basically thought of himself as a surgical knife that his master used to excise unhealthy elements of society. His former master even called him his "Shadow Knife".

I've made up a background for him, and have some ideas about his personality, but it's not really enough for me to get into the feel of roleplaying him, even though I really like him alot. Most of the background stuff I've written up for him is in the form of a "journal". I'll post what I have and also his statistics. Any advice or suggestions for how to roleplay him, or things that I could add to his personality and/or backstory to make him more interesting are welcome.

The game itself is an over-the-top, anime style game where the characters are all quite powerful and are involved in events and politics on a cosmic scale. I joined it after it was in the epic levels, but some of the others have been playing the same characters in it since level 3 or something like that. There are a palladin, a cleric, a water-spirit shujenga (divine sorcerer from Oriental Adventures), a dwarven master of chains, three arcane magic users, and a female rogue (also from an eastern area) in the party. Some people have two characters and one is basically a cohort for them.

As of right now, I travel with the party but they don't really trust me and I don't really trust them either. I had a reason to want to travel with them that was enough to keep me with them and loyal to them, but recently I basically lost it. (It's kind of a weird story, and I think most of it is explained in his journal). My character also lost part of his memories in the process. I'm thinking he's going to be somewhat bewildered and lost, and may look to the Shugenja more in the future for guidance. Anyway, here's what I have so far:

Toshiro Nakamura, the Shadow Knife, now goes by the alias of Kumori Lung (Shadow Dragon). His natural appearance is that of an asian man in his mid 30s, with a shaved head, an unearthly grace in his movements, a disturbing calm in his voice, and the chill of the grave in his eyes. He can alter his appearance at will and is a master of disguises however, so he may look like anyone he wants. The only thing that might give him away is the fact that his shadow is always crisp and clearly defined, even in areas of diffuse lighting.

Originally the top assassin of an evil Scorpion Clan Warlord, he later turned on his master and killed him, after realizing that his master was merely a greedy, evil man with no honor, and no sense of loyalty to clan or empire. Now he flees from his own clan and the many enemies he's made over a long and bloody career. He is a kagemusha, or shadow warrior; a being who's traded part of his soul for the essence of shadow.

Toshiro keeps a journal that he calls his "confessions". As strange as it is for someone in a profession like his to keep a journal, it is perhaps the only way he has clung to his sanity and his identity for as long as he has, in spite of the lifestyle he has lead.

Confessions of Toshiro Nakamura, the Shadow Knife

Excerpt 1
"I was not merely my master's assassin. I sacrificed my honor for him. I sacrificed my pride for him. I sacrificed my very identity for him. I am not the man I was before. The Taint of the Shadow lies upon me. I traded away a piece of my mortal soul, so that I would have power over the shadows. I became merely a tool, his Dark Knife, as he called me. I believed I did the things I did for the good of the Clan and the Empire; that we had the courage to do what others would not, could not, because of their pride, their honor; that it was all worth it... But as I watched more closely the pattern of his actions, I came to realize that he did what he did not out of loyalty to the Clan and the Empire, but out of selfishness and a desire for personal power. He chose the coward's way not because he had to, but because it was easier. He grew to trust me, and confide in me. I grew to hate him, and to hate myself as well.

In the end, I came to an understanding. I could not undo the evils that I had committed in his name, but I could put an end to them. So, like the honorless coward I was, I waited till he had his back to me, reciting a ritual to summon a demon to possess the young daughter of his enemy, and I slipped my dagger into the base of his spine. I turned his face to me, as he gurgled on his last breath, so that he could see that the instrument he had so carefully crafted to be the undoing of so many others had been his own. Then I smiled as the light left his eyes, and let his lifeless corpse fall to the floor.

I had been too late to save the young girl, but it mattered little. I didn't even fight back as the demon thrashed me around the room. I was ready for death. But the fiend saw this, and denied it to me. He left me to live with my shame, for he knew I was an honorless coward and had not the real courage to take my own life in sepuku. I crept away into the night, the Dark Knife, the honorless shadow, to run and hide and kill as I always had."

Excerpt 2
"The enemies of the past have pursued me. One I have found it impossible to elude for long is known as the Dark Shogun. I assassinated several of his higher ranking clan members at the behest of my master, and it seems that he is not a forgiving enemy. Somehow, he always seems to know where I'll be and have minions waiting for yet another attempt on my life. I know my luck will run out eventually. I must find a way to hide from him, as I have from the others. Perhaps I will find answers if I travel to the spirit world bodily and question the spirits directly. They know things that mortals have not the power to see. Now to find a way to get there..."

Excerpt 3
"I have found a strange temple in the realm of the spirits. What appeared to be a young boy knew me by name as I entered, despite my magical protections. He knew things about me no man knows... that still lives. He told me that the Dark Shogun has somehow gained the power to see into the future, and know the fates of men before they come to pass. He said that there are only two ways that he knows of to defeat this power. The greater deities of Chaos are so fickle as to have their Fates undetermined until the moments they come to pass. If I could somehow gain the power of one of these creatures, my future too would be undetermined and unknowable. But that way is daunting and ends only in madness I fear. Regardless, even if I could gain the power of one of these creatures, it would take too long.

The other thing he mentioned is that there are beings, mortals even, whom he called Potentiates. They are somehow at the spearhead of Fate, and influence it and are seemingly in charge of their own destinies. To even be in the presence of these beings can begin to cloak your future, as your's becomes intertwined with their own, which is of course undetermined and unpredictable. So I have resolved to seek a group of these beings out and try to gain their confidence, whether it be through guile or even an honest plea for help or a pledge of allegience, if it comes to that... When querried on how to find them, the spirit only replied with a cryptic riddle. I am to go to the edge of the world and jump off, and find the fairy who lies between twin moons. I can only guess at what that could mean."

Excerpt 4
I have made my way to a bizarre place of death. I have seen nothing but ancient ruins, and wind scoured ground since I got here. After making my way down a truly enormous cliff facing, I came upon a group of... beings. Their power was immense and obvious. One was a powerful looking warrior with glowing eyes, and he gave off a palpaple aura of righteousness that brought bile and fear into the back of my shadow-tainted throat. They were obviously as foreign to the place we found ourselves in as I was, and I followed them as they made their way to one of the more intact hulks of a building and began to fortify an encampment for themselves.

I snuck inside before they began laying down their protections, both magical and mundane. I simply observed them for a bit. Most of what they discussed meant little to me. However, after observing each of them in some detail, I came to a humourous conclusion. One female of the group seemed to have a fairy who preferred to make it's seat within her more than ample bosom. The fairy between the two moons indeed. It seemed the "boy" spirit that I talked to had a sense of humor. And this place certainly seemed it was beyond the edge of the world, and presumably the massive cliff I had descended had been it's edge.

As I began pondering how in the Seven Heavens I was going to come up with a belieavable persona, and a reason for it being here in this abandoned wasteland and "happening upon" their merry little band, there arose the sound of a howling wind and the sounds of stones being torn from the ground and broken upon each other. I made my way out, unseen of course, with some of the warriors of this group who decided to investigate this disturbance. After approaching far closer than any of them seemed willing to, I saw a creature that seemed bizarre beyond anything I had ever encountered. It was shaped like a man, but even with my shadowsight I could not pierce the darkness of it's cowl. It's feet, if indeed it had any, did not touch the ground. It's hands appeared skeletal, and it seemed to wield the power to alter the reality of this place at it's whim. At it's merest gestures, huge columns of stone and, to my surprize bone, tore themselves from the ground and began to assemble into terrible shapes. I decided to skip the subtle disguise routine, and instead just announce myself to the "heroes" in their bunker, hopefully so that if it became necessary, I could aid them in their confrontation with this new creature and not be taken by them as it's ally instead.

Excerpt 5
Well, what a strange band I have joined. They seem to be willing to at least tolerate my presense with them, even though I have told them little of who I am or why I have sought them out. Either they are far too trusting in general, or they see me as not worth noting as a threat. Or perhaps they can somehow discern that I mean them no harm. I doubt the latter actually, since cloaking my motivations and identity is a deep part of my very nature, and I am at least as skilled at it as the most ancient of true Doppelgangers. Either way, I have finally found what I seek; a way to escape the prying mind of the Dark Shogun!

We encountered yet another of my would-be assassins, none other than the Stoneman himself... or so it appeared at first. Having been told (presumably by the Dark Shogun himself) that he would die in his confrontation with me, he decided that if he could not thwart his own fate, at least he might be able to take me with him. The entire party was led into his trap through a strange, convoluted string of events that could certainly not all have been forseen by even the Dark Shogun. It seems he only sees individual moments of the future, not the events leading up to them. To my joy, the assassin seemed quite shocked to see that I was not alone. The stories of the Potentiates are true it seems. My enemy had not been able to divine their future presence with me. Even better, they actually managed to prevent the death of the assassin, thereby foiling the prediction of the Dark Shogun. I'm not sure why they even wanted to, but it seems the stories of their being able to change fate are true. Hopefully they will tolerate me long enough for this power to seep into me as well. I will do my best to provide my considerable skills in stealth, infiltration, and assassination to them and hope that they don't tire of my dark presence and drive me away from them. I now regret not taking on a suitable disguise and presenting them with a more fair face than my own when I first revealed myself to them.

Excerpt 6
I find myself pondering the nature's of my companions. They are a strange crew indeed, and often seem so disorganized that it must truly be a miracle of some goodly god or gods that they have survived for as long as they have. There is a blind "wizard" of some kind, who's hearing is so acute that he can actually target his spells and shoot a bow with seemingly little trouble.

Then there is the one most familiar to me, a Shugenja whom is actually from my homeland of Kara-Tur! (or a version of it, at least) He seems to be a nature spirit of some kind, but I am not an expert on such things. He is very abrupt in his mannerisms, and although he has made no hostile actions towards me, I think he more than the others realizes my tainted nature and might wish I had not joined up with his band. However, even though he obviously is not fond of me, I find myself drawn to conversing with him more than most of the others. It must be the lure of home, even as estranged to it as I was when I was there. There is also a stealthy woman, a very attractive one at that, with the features of my race as well. However, she seems too flighty to approach as of yet, but she is probably the one of the group with whom I have the most in common. That is of course no guarantee of trust, confidence, or general goodwill among those such as us, of course.

There is a dwarven warrior who can use a spiked chain like it is an extension of his body. Indeed, it seems he has even developed magical powers over the use of the chain. And what a chain he has indeed! A very powerful wizard ally of theirs crafted it from some bizarre sword. This old chap, despite his obvious awesome power, seemed to treat with them almost reverently, and be willing to freely give them use of his full powers of magic item creation, though it must tax his soul indeed. He even added further enchantments to my own chain, though the others did trade him some strange item for his services. Perhaps I underestimate it's value, and that is the true explaination of the generosity of our mysterious benefactor...

There is another mage who seems to have immense knowledge of many things in our group, including other worlds. He seems to have a mind for business as well, as the rest of the group seems to defer to him in matters of barter. There is also a strange woman sorcerer of some kind, whom seems to scarcely understand her own powers, as immense as they seem to be. And the bizarre creature of Chaos that we met in the wind-blasted edge of the world has also joined us. A stranger being I'm not sure I've even imagined.

And of course, there is the paladin. He is the very spitting image of one I know I slayed long ago. He is not the same man, however. I can tell by his mannerisms and the way he fights, that this is a different being. Whether he was once the man I slayed and was changed somehow is unknown to me. Perhaps he was returned to life somehow in his new form, with his glowing eyes and holy aura, and simply has lost the memories of his past. Whatever the truth is, he has not recognized me.

There is another holy man who travels with the party, but he seems to be more of a priest than a warrior, albeit one with a strange personality. He sometimes stands at the back of the fight and jeers at the rest of us as he actually summons food and EATS whilst we fight for our lives. He seems to be free enough with this gods healing, however, so I can't complain really.

Oh, and of course there are actually two GODS traveling with us. As strange as it seems, they are often the most innocuous of us, as they often don't accompany us on many of our journeys. They usually stay on the giant vessel that the group uses to travel around on, and only come out when needed or if they are actually interested in what we are doing.

Well, enough of this sentimentality. I seem to be growing comfortable among these people, which although it feels good, can't be safe. Perhaps it is because I didn't have the chance to properly disguise myself, and haven't been keeping up a persona, as I always have in past situations like this. Whatever it is, I must not relax my guard. I'm sure that many of them might try to slay me outright, or at least drive me from their midst, if they found out even a fraction of my true nature and past misdeeds.

Excerpt 7
We encountered Ryvana and he took... something from me. My memories it seems, from looking through this journal. It seems like the writings of some other man, as I have no memory of much that is written here. I feel a sense of loss... but also of relief. I also feel... unsure of myself. Perhaps for the first time in many years I find myself desiring a purpose for my life, and not having one. I have no clan, no shogun, no goals, and no master. And presumably I am freed of the enemies I was running from, but don't remember. Freedom is such a strange thing. I have no idea what to do with it...

Excerpt 8
We have entered a strange and fascinating place called Sigil. It is rumored to be at the center of the multiverse, and it certainly appears worthy of that claim. It is a truly massive city which lies on the inside of some kind of torus. There is nearly every sort of creature you could imagine roaming the streets here, but the peace is mostly kept in spite of fiends and celestials walking past each other daily.

I have spoken with representatives of several "factions" that espouse various philosophical beliefs. It seems that the gods are not welcome here, and that the being that rules this place actually has the power to prevent them from entering. She is known as Her Serenity, the Lady of Pain. I got a better look than I wanted of her today as she stopped and eyed me for a long pause, then turned and kept going. However, it seems she detected the divine spark that I've been told is within me, because she turned around and headed back my way. I hid in an alley and waited until she moved on. Although my skills of stealth are well beyond the kin of most mortals, there is some doubt in the back of my mind as to whether I actually hid from her, or she decided that I wasn't worth bothering with...

To raise some money and purchase some of the many fabulous magical wares to be found here, I've entered a gladitorial competition under the assumed identity of a half-elven rogue named Valec Chrysalis. I sold off what valubles I had accumulated while traveling with my newfound companions to fund this, and I have doubled my money twice so far both from betting on myself (using various other false identities) and from the reward purses. I have made it to the 8th circle of the competition, out of 10. The combats are getting quite tough however. My last opponent, in a match in the 7th circle of the competition, was some strange burning creature.

It originally appeared as a flaming skeleton, but it seems that the actual creature was just using the skeleton as a "host" of sorts. Once the skeleton had been destroyed, the inhabiting spirit burst forth in a rush of flames. Although it was surely fearsome, the frosty end of my chain soon made quick work of it, and I took only a few injuries. However, I have had to use several of my abilities in the arena that I had hoped to keep secret, at least until the later stages of the competition. I doubt that I have the skill or power to win this competition outright, so I am going to stop betting all of my winnings each time, and instead only bet half of them on myself in the future.

That wouldn't be like Ivy's sword from Soul Caliber II, would it?
Oh, and you need no help roleplaying your character if you can come up with something like this.

The only thing that might pose a problem when roleplaying such a PC is if ends up like "the silent and reserved type". But you seem capeble enough to avoid that.

Oh, and you need no help roleplaying your character if you can come up with something like this. It's a crazy Artifact sword the DM came up with. It was just a hilt with no blade and a socket at the base of the hilt. You put gems into the socket, and depending on what gem you use, you get a different kind of blade that springs out of the hilt. For example, a ruby causes a blade of flame, a sapphire was a frosty blade, etc. The craziest one was some kind of psionic crystal with a power in it related to time. They hit some guy with that and it erased his very existance from history, including their memories of him. Some god of Time came along and basically told them to never use that again, hehe.

One of the Chosen of Mystra changed it into a spiked chain for the master of chains in our party. Where the spiked ends would be, he had Immovable Rods attached and the socket(s) from the sword are on the ends of these. It is a really cool and extremely powerful weapon.

The only thing that might pose a problem when roleplaying such a PC is if ends up like "the silent and reserved type". But you seem capeble enough to avoid that.Yeah, that's a big part of the problem with him, he tends to just lurk in the shadows and watch things, and not interact much. It doesn't lend itself to getting to participate in alot of the roleplaying situations in the game though.

I've been playing him as though he now feels like he's lost and is searching for purpose in his life. This works out great, because the party just arrived in Sigil, and I can use the various factions in that place to help him decide what he believes is important in life, and to iron out some goals for him.

The DM is also adding in forshadowing of his becoming a Void Incarnate and working it into the plot of his gaming world. The party recently read from an artifact called the Phylactry of Rivanna, and it basically explained that reality is maleable and is actually the result of the collective unconscious of it's inhabitants. So by doing a number of exercises regularly, and increasing the power of your mind and grasping this principle, you can take almost complete control over your own existence. In his game terms, this makes you immune to some effects, including the Divine powers of Deities, since the deities derive their power from the collective beliefs of their followers.

My character is going to basically become a form of Buddist and begin willing himself out of existence. If the axiom "I think, therefore I am." is true, then it also follows that if you can clear your mind of thoughts totally, that you could Will yourself out of existence. He's going to join the Transcendant Order (the Ciphers) of Sigil to go along with this, and pick up the Void Incarnate prestige class.

As previously stated, I dont see the prblem. It seems that you have a wonderfull charecter and no problems playing him, so then i guess all is well.

Good luck. And you coud update his journal (quite good).

Yeah, I'm getting more into roleplaying him now, and it's going fairly well I think. Thanks for the encouragement. :D I'll post more of his bio as I write it.

oooo

i got excited reading your bio and description. very very well written, my compliments.
As to how to rp him... well it has been said before that you answered your own question but...

think of both the comic and movie of "crouching tiger, hidden dragon" and any of the anime with ninjas in...

when they're not fighting they usually quiet and when they speak they don't mince words. When the ninja does speak he has something simple, something that was obvious but missed by the rest of the group.
At such a high level i think your pc would understand something of the cosmos... they seem to know certain mysteries that they keep hidden, something insignificant...

They don't butt in with stupid remarks and usually say something to the effect of... [I] i wouldn't do that if i was you...[I] then the opponent sneers and says something insolent. then the ninja runs him through so quickly that the camera has to slow the action down so we can see him sheath his already clean sword...

anyway, just my observations
hope this is helpful...

I recently rewatched Iron Monkey, and also watched Bulletproof Monk for the first time. I think both of them are great inspirational material for playing this character, especially Iron Monkey. My character's fighting style is alot like the main character's in Iron Monkey. He's extremely dextrous, jumps up onto the tops buildings like most people jump up onto the sidewalk, leaps over his opponents and makes them look foolish, and has a chain weapon that he keeps hidden on him and uses when he needs it. He has to conceal his identity all the time. Iron Monkey also used his skills of disguise to dupe the governer of the province into giving him a large portion of his treasury.

I really liked that movie character and might try to play my guy's personality more like him once he's distanced himself more from his evil past. But right now, he probably comes off more dark and menacing than serene, and he definitely isn't as generous or nice as the main character of Iron Monkey. However, since he's lost alot of his memories, especially those that caused most of his paranoia and worry, he might get the chance to mellow some. I've been playing him as confused and emotionally lost, even though he keeps his emotions hidden behind his poker face. We recently entered Sigil in the campaign, and I've been going around talking to the various factions in a search for some clues to a deeper meaning of existence, something that might help him come to grips with his past, present, and possible future.

I also entered a gladiatorial combat to earn money to buy some magic items that I have seen in shops in Sigil, especially a magical tattoo. So far I've done pretty well, but the competition is getting tougher. Next match I'm entering the 8th level out of 10 of the competition. The creature I fought in round 7 was a flaming incorporeal undead called an effigy (Monster Manual 2). I'll edit my original post to add my latest journal entry for him. Maybe I should change the title of the thread also, since it seems to be turning into a record of his adventures rather than me asking for advice on how to roleplay him. :D

Im curious, why did you take ninja6? 8 would of given you shadow run, was it flavor? or just for the build?
