| Lord of the Ninth12-25-03, 05:21 PM | First, you need to think about Who is fighting Who. So you need to consider the scale of your war. Is this a tift between to small kingdoms? Or have two great factions of your continent decided to ally with their neighbors and fight it out in epic fashion? Are the lines territorial? Racial? Based on alignment? (C vs. L or G vs. E, or a touch of both). After you know this you can think of the reasons why the war started. Generally, with large conflicts there are numerous reasons that wars start. Each group involoved usually has at least one reason for taking part in a war. So the elves might involve themselves because the halflings assassinated their queen, but the dwarves joined the battle because the gnomes tried to screw them over with massive tarrifs, but they will claim that it is a matter of honor between the two monarchs, because of a trumped up insult (that began as a practical joke). And thenthe human nation of Arramina will have allied themselves with the elves because the hobgoblins (who have an alliance with the halflings), had launched a campaign of brigands against human merchants traveling to the north of their territory. Or you could just have the Kingdom of Gillieth fighting the Republic of Jaerik because the current king of Gillieth's grandfather was killed fighting mercenaries hired by the High Counsel of Jaerik. Once you have all that down (and it can be as simple or as complex as you want it), then we can give you more specific ideas. You should also keep in mind what sort of campaign you want to run. Will it be a gritty "in the trenches" combat game, or an exercise in fantastic espionage? Or maybe you are trying to resolve the war through peaceful discussion? Or maybe you're on a last ditch mission to thwart the superweapon of the enemy? Or I suppose you could do all of these in the course of a campaign. |
