Rayne d'Cannith, son of Jaren and Elana, both formerly of house Cannith, is an artificer who works for south Cannith. At the age of 12, his sister Malencenia was born. When he was 15, he worked in the forges of Cyre. At the age of 27 he was called back to his family where he discovered his 15 year old sister developed an Aberrant dragonmark. Jaren, Elana, and Malencenia all willingly forsook their name and moved to Sharn where they opened up a small shop that at let Jaren and Elana make a living and support their daughter. At the same time, Rayne moved to Sharn as well, working for the fabricators guild and visiting his family every now and then. As Rayne worked, his sister made an income off by herself, what she did, he did not know. For 7 years, he worked for the Fabricators Guild. Every now and then he was assigned a job designed to sabotage some upcoming business not monopolized by the House. He would do some odd missions for the house, but he would always accept the missions given to him by the house. The last war ended when he was 34. After the destruction of the main house and the splitting of the house, he felt his loyalties were to stay with Merrix in Sharn. He has been sent on several missions to Cyre though he never stays there long. Also during several of these missions, his sister accompanied him if he paid the right price. Now he is 36 and spends most of his time away from Sharn. He frequents Cyre looking for foundries no longer in production and retrieving items or at least discovering the probable locations of items and schemas.

That's the basic story of Rayne d'Cannith. I still need to stop being lazy and type it out/finish it up. He will never take a favored in house feat mostly because he still associates with his aberrant sister. He has become important and loyal to Cannith so that is why they do not force him away. Later on, he will become an Heir of Siberys. And he is going to be using the leadership feat to have his sister as a cohort.

The problem I'm having is writing the story for Malencenia. She has a brother 12 years older than him. At age 15 she develops an aberrant dragonmark and is forced from House Cannith. Then I have 7 years where she does stuff on the side. And 2 years traveling with her brother. I was trying to think of a class for her and I was thinking maybe Warlock, Beguiler, or Rogue. I just can't really think about what type of character she would be. I haven't even thought of what sort of aberrant powers she would manifest, but that is mostly because I can't really think of what would be most characteristic for her.

Its a dark twist and doesn't go through your listed classes but...

A 15 year old who was raised as a noble is thrust out onto the streets of Sharn. She has nowhere to go and nothing but a small amount of silver to survive on. She wanders to the lowest levels and is promptly robbed leaving her with nothing but her clothes and her curse. The big question here is not what does she do but who took her in. That determines more or less the next 7 years of her life.

The only former family member looking out for her is her brother and he can't associate too closesly. I say let her find religion. Her mark is a gift of The Traveler. It is the first manifestation of her role as a favored soul. She now knows all about betrayal and loyalty and finds value in both. She is fiercely devoted to her brother and probably more powerful than he recognizes. He looks at her with pity and tries to protect her. She sees him as naive, willingly allowing Cannith to use him and it is her job to protect him from them. She has learned every dark place in the city and lives amongst those others call monster in the poorest quarter. Let every eye see her as the poorest, most wretched woman. Let only a rare few know she has a destiny in the Travelers' court.

I like the idea of the character but I'm not really feeling it for her.... One thing is that I imagine her more skillfill but... favored souls don't really have that... And I just prefer warlocks of flavored souls, I'm more of an arcanist anyway... I like warlock because they can take 10 with items which I believe would be beneficial with the whole artificer sibling. Maybe I'll do a beguiler/warlock/eldritch theurge...hmm...I really like warlock... I think I will stick with that... Hmm... Beguiler 5/Warlock 4/ Mindbender 1/Eldritch theurge 10...
I do enjoy the whole feeling that she needs to protect her brother more than he needs to protect her though... In Sharn, she never really felt at home with her parents even though they gave up everything in order to stay with her. She would often run off... and something... She would be a pickpocket/thief as well as other things.... alrighty... I'm liking that...

I really like the idea of her beigna warlock. She's already having an Aberrant dragonmakr so why not some crazy and frightening heritage? Though I'd prefer to keep her a straight warlock, or even a Hellfire Warlock.

As far as backstory is conerned if you go the warlock route you might want to further expand the original characters story by saying the parents outcast her compeltely, they did not lose anything adn considered her a bastard daughter of some evil force.

This, would in turn aloow the older brother to step in an support her on the side with the money he earns. HE's never around much though and she's bound to get into trouble and may do prostitution or being a con artist on the side allowing justificaiton for beguiler levels.

In this way when you get leadership she may feel the need to get out of the gutter and join her more "legit" brother.

Have you seen the Child of Khyber PrC in the dragonshard article?

I was thinking favored soul more for a source of definitevly clerical magic. Artificer may not be arcane or divine but has more arcane flavor to it. Still if you prefer warlock it works just as well. More important was the idea of her brother still being a little bit pampered as a noble by comparison to the hard life she has had to live. You seem to have picked up on that so I'm glad if I have helped.

Thank you all for your input... I'm getting more of an idea... still trying to decide on the final character.. I like the child of khyber prc but... sadly I have a knack for wanting an optimized character which means if I was to do it I'd probably be a rogue because I can't stand losing so many caster levels... hmm... Maybe I will make her a rogue, just be nice and simple She won't be taking 10 on umd checks but she'll have the skill points to synergize the points into the stratoshphere... Rogue/Child of Khyber ^^ Maybe I'll send the character over to the CO boards to actually get a better build.. well thank you for your help... when finally get in the mood I'll write about Malencenia and I'll post the full background story for the siblings.

So Malencenia never stayed around her parents and eventually the gave up on her because they had given up so much for her already they couldn't stand giving up anymore to get nothing. She was forced to grow up in the slums of Sharn being a pickpocket, con artist, and sometimes as a prostitute as well, but she had to live. Her brother only knew some of her indecent habits and so wasn't as worried as he should have been. Despite his best efforts to help her, he was unable to do a great deal because he was always a slave to the whims of the house. As her dragonmark grew in power, she would show it off proudly flaunting the cursed sign on her back that threw her from the bosom of the great House of Cannith. She showed it as a sign of personal victory, a badge that proved she was able to survive on her own without the help of her brother, the help of her parents, and certainly not the help of the houses. Now she travels with her brother, following him around helping him as much as she can because although he is the eldest and tries to look out for her, it is he who would need the help to survive. He lived all his life supported by Cannith and if the house were to fall, as it seemed it might, she would need to protect him.

If you want to make her really strange and powerful with a dark side, try binder from Tome of Magic. Here's the link to the binder handbook on the character optimization boards if you want some pointers.

It's not that I want her dark... it's that I want her to be sneaky and manipulative. That's why I was going more with Warlock with his various invocations such as spiderclimb, charm, beguiling influence... Or a Beguiler with their sneaky mageness... but I believe the best choice would be a rogue.

Oh. And Thank you AnthroDM for pointing out the Child of Khyber prestige class. That at least made me decided to be a Rogue 4/Child of Khyber 5/ X 11 now all I need to do is figure out X

I don't know how well it would work mechanically... but using "Spellthief" for some of those X levels would definately add an interesting flavor and seems to fit with the concept a bit.
