So, I'm starting a game, and my DM has ruled that Elves age more lke they do in the Tolkien books (Lose Str and Dex at normal rate, gain mental stats as normal, but NEVER die of old age). Now, I'm playing an elf wizard, probably some....3500 years old, but he's only level 7. What kinds of things could have happened in his past that reduced/took away his power, making him start over? I only need to figure this out because it seems reeeeallly unlikely that someone who has been studying magic for 3000 years would still not be able to cast Cone of Cold. Also, he is a Conjurer, with Necromancy and Illusion prohibited, and the Rapid Summoning trait from UA, and loves Cold spells and conjurations/summons. The story we have so far is this:

He was a great, powerfule wizard, who took a human/half-elf woman as his lover. She was aging, so he began researching necromancy, to try and extend her life. He starts treating/performing experiments on her, but they cause her great pain. She does not want him to feel guilt for her pain and suffering, so she ends her own life, making it look like an accident. He travels to Hades itself, in order to try and barter for her soul. Hades says no, and he tries to steal it instead (after much planning and preparation). Hades finds him, strips him of everything, and tosses him back into the material plane, naked. He was NOT killed because he was a very devout worshipper of Apollo (Greek pantheon here, people), and Apollo intervened to spare him.

Any other ideas are more than welcome, as I'm not sure I like this story. Anyway, thanks in advance!

Just because he wasnt killed doesnt mean jack. Hades is one evil bastard, and Apollo cant prevent everything. maybe the closest thing to death that Hades could have done was strip him of all his power. that way you can have a (potentially epic) powerful wizard stripped back to a first level one, and have him start over. remember, most people only get to level 5 or 6 in a lifetime, so he could have been studying magic, regaining his power, for the past 200 years, slowly, and he's made it to level seven so far. he wanted to live a normal life, not one that was *obsessed* with magic, because it caused him so much pain in the past. he instead took it slow and steady, while living like a commoner. 3.5 levels of wizard in a lifetime isnt *too* bad, for a commoner type character..

this opens up character possibilities too. maybe you could get your dm to allow more known spells, but less equipment (he took longer to get there, so he has more spells in his book/s but he never had a use for the fancy toys). you never know -- it may play well, and roleplay better.

Beings with a normal lifespan of infinite are going to have a very different perspective on self-improvement: Was Elrond any better a fighter when he held his Council than when he fought alongside Isildur?

Your character may just not be in any hurry to learn more magic, at least until induced to by external events: he can always learn it tomorrow, yet today there will be a sunrise like no other, uniquely patterned, never to be exactly duplicated even until the end of the world...

I mean, I don't know what elves spend their time doing but I can't see a problem with someone staying a 7th-level wizard for years while they do something else. They just aren't going to have a "live each day like your last" perspective.

perhaps hemade a lot of magic Items before confronting Hades but these Items were taken from by Hades. or mabye he was put into some sort of sleep and the Apollo saved him. and perhaps hades cursed him so that he canno die so that he cannot join his beloved, and every time he dies he loses EXP. So he searchs the world for a way to kill himself.
